A

n aerial search mission has ended in tragedy after a young couple were found deceased in the wreckage of a light aircraft earlier this week.

The Piper Cherokee aircraft was reported missing around 6:30pm, Sunday, April 2 when it failed to

land as expected at Bloomsbury’s Lakeside Airpark.

The aircraft departed from a cattle station at Natal Downs, around 300km west of Mackay, on Sunday afternoon, due to land at Bloomsbury by 5:00pm.

A large-scale aerial search was conducted overnight, covering 330km, with a QG Air Rescue helicopter from Townsville discovering the wreckage in the rainforest-covered Clark Ranges, west of Proserpine, around 10:00am Monday morning.

Double Snuggles

Sit Down with Sam Hi Readers You may or may not have heard that WA band Spacey Jane are heading our way in June. The indie rockers seemingly came out of nowhere, developing a sound that saw them become arguably the biggest band in Australia. I was surprised and excited when I saw Mackay on their regional tour. It’s surely got to be one of the bigger contemporary acts to come north since I’ve lived here, and I think it will be a fun and important night for Mackay music. I had a chat to the band’s drummer Kieran Lama about all this and more which you can read on page 20. Also, make sure to grab your tickets and support regional live music.

It’s been a relatively quiet year so far for touring artists, but filling that space, as always, has been the hardworking local scene. Gigs at Empire, the Ambassador and even the Sugar Bowl skate park have kept local music fans busy. There’s also some big re-

leases coming this year from local bands like Red Veridian and Subservia, so keep your eyes out for these. I’m hoping to share more stories from Mackay’s growing music scene here in the paper, so if you’re interested in getting involved, reach out to sam@ mackayandwhitsundaylife. com.

Of course, we do have a bevy of big gigs to look forward to.

On top of Spacey Jane in June, we have Legends on the Lawn in May, Be Social later in June, NQ’s Rock’n Country in August and Tia Gostelow’s Sugar Drop Festival appears to have something in the works.

I aim to keep Mackay readers and listeners on top of everything music with my work in the newspaper alongside my show on local community radio station 4CRM 107.5FM. ackay Base Hospital staff were touched by positive support from parents Hannah and Andrew Farrar, who had been through a “rollercoaster pregnancy”.

The couple’s twins, Mackenzie Rae and Vincent Brent Farrar, were born almost two weeks ago at the local hospital, arriving just ahead of their due date at 37.5 weeks.

Ms Farrer said that she knew having twins would be more difficult than a single pregnancy but without the support of the hospital’s Women’s Health Unit and physios, it would have been an extraordinary struggle.

“Very early on I was feeling so heavy and was put in touch with Dale from the Physio Department who helped with pelvic movement,” Hannah said.

“For the last 10 weeks I rested as much as I could. My stomach muscles had separated and I was

unable to drive which meant I had to be chauffeured around by my family.”

Ms Farrer and her twins extended a heartfelt thank you to the team of clinicians and staff involved in the family’s antenatal and postnatal care.

“We honestly couldn’t have got through a difficult twin pregnancy without the amazing compassion and guidance from Dr Chandika and our midwife Liz,” Ms Farrer said.

“The comfort they gave me each and every time I saw them will never ever be forgotten.

“They delivered our twins safely with genuine care and support, and for that we are forever grateful.”

The twins are now resting up before they’re introduced to the extended family throughout the year.

Mum Of Button Battery Survivor “Rest Easy, Cowboy” Shares Story

I

t’s been almost four weeks since one-year-old Amity Buchanan ingested a button battery which became lodged in her throat, causing metal shards to come dangerously close to her aorta and boring an eight-centimetre burn into her oesophagus.

She was lucky to survive and since then, her parents have been on a rollercoaster ride of emergency airlifts, surgery, scans, scopes and medical appointments.

The wreckage of a Piper Cherokee aircraft was discovered in the dense bushland of the Clark Ranges on Monday morning with the bodies of 22-year-old Rhiley Kuhrt and his pregnant 24-year-old wife Maree onboard.

Tributes have flown for the young “cowboy”, who would have celebrated his 23rd birthday on Wednesday, his wife, who is believed to have a young daughter, and their unborn child.

Amity’s mother, Jemma Gultzow, says her daughter is eating only pureed food and that, although she is “in good spirits”, it is difficult watching her child deprived of what she once loved.

“A fella couldn't help but be constantly impressed by Maree and Rhiley's sense of adventure and zest for life,” said one friend.

“Food was a big part of her life and it’s sad to see her not able to eat proper food that she loves,” said Jemma.

“You figure quick they're a special kind when you’re helping her onto the back of a rodeo bull and see he's managing cattle stations at such a young age.”

Despite this, Jemma feels grateful that Amity is still alive, especially since she discovered there have been three known cas-

They had recently relocated to Natal Downs, near Charters Towers, to work on a cattle station and were flying east to visit family based in and around Mackay.

Mr Kuhrt, the son of a Mackay police officer, is said to have flown the route regularly.

A GoFundMe has been set up in aid of the two families by Mr Kuhrt’s sister, Beccarah Markham-Gaudion, where she described the flight as “routine”.

“We are all absolutely heartbroken and utterly grief stricken,” she said.

She realises how lucky they are and feels frustrated that her concerns were not addressed by the medical team at Mackay Base Hospital sooner which could have lessened the damage caused by the battery.

“We are extremely disappointed, in fact angry – we feel that Amity was neglected by the doctor,” explains Jemma.

“She presented to the hospital within an hour of ingesting the battery, her symptoms could have been lessened if the proper procedures had been done straight away.”

Investigations into the incident have begun between police and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, with the retrieval operation taking days due to the limited access and rugged terrain of the crash site.

Mayors Act On Suicide Prevention One Thousand Young Voices Heard Taskforce Recommendations

A

key group of local youth sector stakeholders set out to have conversations with 1,000 youth, aged 10 to 21, to find out how they feel about living in the Mackay region and what they would like to see change.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson, who was at Teen Shed Mackay earlier this week to launch the product of those conversations, the YOL1000 report (Youth Out Loud) – congratulated the project team on engaging with so many of our region’s young people.

“This tremendous report is the result of one of the most extensive, targeted engagement projects ever undertaken locally,” Mr Williamson said.

“It outlines the key things that we heard from young people and the key trends that have emerged from those conversations.

“Young people clearly told us that they value our beautiful natural environment and places and spaces, however, they also highlighted a few key things they feel are missing.

“Something they wanted more of was access to safe spaces to gather, outside the school and home environment, and entertainment options that are specifically for young people.”

Teen Shed is one of those safe spaces and, having recently moved to Mackay from

the Sunshine Coast, Isabella Versaci joined to meet new people.

“I’ve made a lot of friends and met a lot of people with likeminded interests,” she said.

“It makes me get out of my comfort zone and I would definitely recommend it for other people.”

While Isabella wasn’t involved in YOL1000, she agreed that access to safe spaces was a high priority for her and her family.

“Teen Shed brings that safety and knowing that there’s an always an adult to make sure nothing happens,” she said.

Manager of Community Development at MADEC and YOL1000 member Karen Bonham said the report would spur some exciting initiatives in the youth community.

“What we also hope is that other organisations, services and businesses around the region will read the report and engage with YOL to support current and future initiatives in response to what we have heard from young people,” Ms Bonham said.

he Greater Whitsunday Council of Mayors Suicide Prevention Taskforce has unveiled an innovative community-led suicide prevention model aimed at improving mental health care in the Greater Whitsunday region.

The Pathways Connect model is designed to work in alignment with all existing services, community groups and initiatives within the region.

"What has been developed is a community-led, early intervention suicide prevention pilot model, co-designed by community, industry, and government representatives from across the Greater Whitsunday footprint, and is intended to help our people find the right option, at the right time,” said Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson.

The Taskforce was established in response to the regions ‘concerns about escalating suicide rates and the difficulties residents face in accessing appropriate mental health services.

“This initiative is already encouraging local youth service providers and government to seek targeted solutions for young people.”

"The most important aspect of this model is getting people to the right assistance or service for their individual situation,” said Lived Experience Representative Emma Rix.

The YOL1000 report is available online at www.mackay.qld.gov.au/yol1000.

“If we can do this, not only will it create a better experience for those who are strug-

gling, but we will also ease the pressure on the services we have in the community.”

Over the course of 2022, Greater Whitsunday Communities worked alongside a diverse range of community members and service providers to design an outreach model to create better access to mental health resources.

“By providing early intervention and support through trained peers, it (the Pathways Connect model) enhances access to mental health services and aims to prevent suicide in the region,” said Greater Whitsunday Communities Executive Officer Carol Norris.

Greater Whitsunday Communities is now seeking financial contributions and partnerships to begin implementation of the pilot model, with the intention of working in alignment with all existing services, community groups and initiatives.

Banks Start April With A Smile Surf Lifesaving Gold

Mackay school student has returned from Western Australia with a gold medal after succeeding at the 2023 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

Nate McKinnon, a year 9 student at Whitsunday Anglican School, finished first in the U14 Male division on the weekend of March 25-26.

The achievement is the result of many hours of study and training, making Nate the first national gold medallist from the Eimeo Surf Lifesaving Club and region.

Nate’s father grew up surf lifesaving at Maroochydore Surf Club and got Nate and his three siblings involved in the Eimeo Surf Lifesaving Club six years ago, when Nate was eight.

“The culture (at Eimio is) really good,” Nate said.

“It’s a really positive and nice atmosphere to be in.

“Their support’s been really good with helping us getting over there and supplying us with boards.”

Nate attends Nippers at Eimio every Sunday, also training four times a week at the beach and eight times a week at Pat Wright Swim School with his coaches Pat Wright and Greg Bourne, as well as his mother.

He found success at recent branch trials which qualified him for states earlier in March.

Nate then qualified for Nationals, travelling to Western Australia and finishing first.

“It was really nice to go to a new environment with different features and waves and beaches,” he said.

The championships tested his all-round ability in theory, live patient assessment and physical races, involving board, swim, tube and sprint races.

When it comes to preparation, Nate’s approach is a simple one.

“I just go out there and give it my best shot,” he said.

He said the excitement was palpable between him and his father when he won gold.

“I was really excited and surprised at the same time,” Nate said. “(Dad) was really happy when we learnt that I got gold.”

Nate hopes to continue surf lifesaving throughout his life, striving to do return to Mackay with gold again next year.

“I’d like to keep doing surf lifesaving as I get older,” he said.

anks across the region had staff dress up in colourful clown props last week to raise funds for an important cause.

Clown Doctors is a national program that provides highly trained, professional “medical clowns” to help uplift sick kids by delivering doses of laughter and joy throughout hospitals.

The Commonwealth Bank branches at Caneland Central, Mount Pleasant, Proserpine, Airlie Beach and Bowen rallied with CBA branches across the country to raise much needed funds for Smile Month, the national fundraiser for the Clown Doctors run by The Humour Foundation.

“We’re really proud to support such a worthy organisation,” said CBA Caneland Branch Manager Elizabeth McLean (Geisler).

“Clown Doctors do amazing things for sick kids in hospitals.”

The branch held a lolly raffle throughout the day as well as accepting donations from customers to raise funds.

“People have been so wonderful in their generosity in supporting such a worthy cause,” Ms McLean said.

The Clown Doctors program makes more than 230,000 visits each year to children in 22 hospitals across Australia.

CBA branches will host a variety of fundraising events and collect customer donations during the fundraising the campaign

between Friday March 31 and Friday April 28.

Tony Warner, CEO of The Humour Foundation, commended CBA’s ongoing commitment to helping the Clown Doctors.

“Over the past 20 years CommBank Staff Foundation has helped provide funds and build awareness of the wonderful work the Clown Doctors do,” he said.

“We’d like to express our sincere gratitude for all the fundraising efforts in CBA branches and its customers for their ongoing contributions – all funds raised allow us to continue to bring the magic of Clown Doctors to sick kids in hospitals across the country.”

Ms McLean added that CBA Caneland is proud to support local community groups through CBA Community Grants.

“We’ve had customers vote for a community group of their choice since January,” she said.

VEHICLES SEIZES FROM MACKAY DEBTORS

“I THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO DIE IN MY ARMS” Continued from pg 3 Amity was at home playing in the walk-in wardrobe while her mother was less than two metres away on the nearby bed.

Within a couple of minutes Amity came to Jemma holding a polyester bean, part of a bean bag she had received as a birthday present a few weeks earlier.

Jemma states that she did not see her eat it.

Within five minutes, however, Jemma could hear a strange whistling sound when Amity breathed and a few minutes later she was vomiting.

Calling an ambulance, little Amity was rushed to hospital but after a long wait and a quick examination that did not include an x-ray, Amity was sent home.

This frustrates Jemma, because protocol for a child who is thought to have ingested an item is usually an x-ray and although she did not see Amity ingest anything, the rapidity of the symptoms made her think something had been ingested.

Eventually it was discovered to be a battery from an old electronic car key.

Amity’s father, Daniel, took the family home for the night, but when her condition worsened the following day, they went to their local doctor who referred them for an x-ray at the hospital.

Upon presenting for the second time, Jemma said they were confronted by the same doctor who had dismissed them the day before.

Jemma said that once again they waited for over 40 minutes, despite Daniel imploring the staff to help.

She alleges that the doctor showed them his list of emergency patients implying that Amity’s condition was not serious enough to warrant his immediate attention.

When they were finally granted an x-ray, Jemma says that the doctor was rude and did not give directions on where they needed to go.

As soon as the x-ray was ready, however, they could see the circular shape of the button battery and the situation escalated quickly.

“We will also be communicating with the family as part of this.”

Jemma says they mentioned how rude the previous doctor was and were offered a different doctor which she agreed to.

Dr Pain confirms that the hospital followed the state-wide guideline that provides clinical guidance for all staff involved in the care and management of a child presenting to emergency with a suspected or confirmed ingested foreign body.

She then states that the previous doctor came back into the room and confronted them.

“The critical question that has arisen in the Mackay case is about the decision not to initially x-ray,” he said.

“He was so nasty to us,” said Jemma.

“When a doctor is making that judgement, they will be guided by the history that is given about what the child has eaten and if a doctor is given a clear story that they’ve eaten a particular thing, then they won’t want to expose that child to radiation from an x-ray.

“He came back into the room intimidating us and asking why we had asked for a new doctor – it was awful.”

Fortunately, after this encounter, Amity was flown to Townsville Hospital where she was rushed into theatre and the battery removed.

She was then flown down to Brisbane where she is still recovering.

“I am not a medical professional, and I did not once say that I had seen her ingest the polystyrene bean,” said Jemma.

“I feel like that has been used to throw the blame back on me.”

Mackay Base Hospital released a state-

“From our initial investigation I believe the decision not to x-ray was an appropriate judgement to make based on the information presented and the clinical examination of the child.

“However, one thing we will do from now on is to specifically ask the parent if they witnessed the child swallow the object. If they did not, it will influence our decision on whether to x-ray.”

ehicles have been clamped and seized in the latest attempt by the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER) to recover outstanding fines.

SPER’s field enforcement officers recovered more than $400,000 in unpaid fines and penalties from debtors across Mackay and payment plan commitments of a further $1.8 million.

SPER Enforcement Director Kim Easton said the operation resulted in the seizure of 21 vehicles.

“SPER officers clamped and seized vehicles from Mackay and the surrounding areas, including St Helens Beach, Cannonvale, Jubilee Pocket and Sarina,” he said.

“Most of the owners of these vehicles have now paid their debts, however there are still some who continue to avoid their obligations.

“Three of these vehicles will be sold at auction because the owners refused to pay.”

Mr Easton said there was a simple way to avoid this type of enforcement action.

“The best thing to do is pay your fine on time, otherwise our officers will take the necessary steps to enforce the law,” he said.

“If you don’t act, you can have money taken from your wages or bank account or have SPER officers visit you at your home or workplace to seize your vehicle to recover what you owe.”

Mr Easton said SPER is always willing to have a conversation with people about their debt, but they need to act.

“Anyone who is having trouble paying for whatever reason should contact SPER on 1300 365 635 to discuss their payment options and avoid enforcement action,” he said.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR SIERRA LEONE SCHOOLS

ast month, Mackay Life reported on teacher Mohamed Johnson-Kanu requesting school supplies to send to impoverished schools in his home country of Sierra Leone.

Contacting primary and secondary schools throughout the region, as well as Mackay Regional Council, he is requesting the donation of supplies such as textbooks, novels, furniture, computers, filing cabinets and other resources.

Mr Johnson-Kanu has provided an update,

saying that a shipping container has been acquired and sits at Pioneer State High School waiting to be filled.

“We just need people to continue donating furniture and those sorts of things and we need to raise some money to send the container to Sierra Leone,” he said.

chools across the region are now more informed about the hazards of screen time addiction, ‘sextortion’ and other digital dangers that are impacting the well-being of children.

“From just $49 per person, you can ditch the nearly nine-hour drive between Cairns and Mackay,” he said.

“Why would you battle the Bruce Highway when you don’t need to?”

“You have to actually detox – cold turkey – for between four and six weeks in order for the brain to return to normal.”

The Australian Institute of Family Studies found that children between four and five average more than two hours of screen time per day.

Concerned that extreme screen time can lead to behavioural issues and angry outbursts, Brad says that because a child’s pre-frontal cortex is not fully developed, when dopamine floods the pleasure centre of the brain they have “no brakes”.

By the time they reach their teenage years, this has risen to more than three hours during the week and over four hours per day on the weekend.

Brad is concerned that as the ‘metaverse’ starts to gain traction in the form of 3D goggles and 3D reality – children will sink even further into addiction.

This means that up to 30 per cent of the average Australian child’s wake time is spent in front of a screen.

Children in this state lack empathy, constantly say “I’m bored” and need more and more to stimulate their brains.

The Queensland Police-led educational sessions, which were presented to 4,718 students, 260 teachers and 210 adults/parents over the past few weeks, are aimed at informing our community about the signs and symptoms of screen addiction.

“It’s like a drug,” said Brad.

Led by internationally respected speaker and expert in digital addiction, Brad Huddleston, the talks have opened the conversation and inspired changes in behaviour for many students.

Brad has been facilitating annual Digital Rehab and Cyber Safety tours in the region for over a decade and he teams up with this year’s Citizen of the Year, Sergeant Nigel Dalton, to provide information on both the education and the potential legal dangers of online safety.

During the talks, Brad shows attendees images of the brain which illustrates the neuroscience of how our brains are impacted by excessive screen time.

“Limiting screen time doesn’t work,” said Brad.

“They need to do more to achieve the same result and they get angry when you take the device away.”

During the sessions, Nigel also talks about ‘sextortion’ and while they were visiting local schools, two cases came in where unsuspecting teenagers had been targeted.

Sextortion largely involves an online relationship where a youngster is encouraged to film intimate acts and nudity then send the images or video to their online lover.

The North Queensland Airports Group CEO Richard Barker – whose company owns and operates both Cairns and Mackay Airports - greeted travellers to both regions.

“Providing non-stop flights between Cairns and Mackay will give travellers the option of cost-effective flying, whether that be for leisure, visiting friends and relatives or the cost-conscious business traveller,” he said.

“Cairns is the home for many fly in, fly out mine workers who travel to Mackay and onto the Bowen Basin. I am sure the flights will be welcomed by them.”

In one local case, a boy gave the scammer $500 of his savings and was only caught when he attempted to use his mother’s credit card.

As most of this originates from offshore perpetrators it is almost impossible for anyone to get their money back.

A Day At The Beach

W

hen Nanyima Aged Care invited residents to “make a wish”, Colleen and Ken Walker suggested fish and chips on the beach.

The local pair, who met at a Friday night dance as teenagers, have long loved the beach.

“My parents had a beach house, and we were down there all the time,” said Colleen.

“At that age, all the young ones were at the beach of a weekend.

“It’s just a lovely place with lovely people.”

“They’re just loving being out here in the

fresh air having a meal with everybody in the community,” said Diversional Therapist Tanya Tooma.

“It actually boosts their confidence and self-esteem.”

When the aged care home contacted Scott Palmer at the surf club to book a lunch, he was ready to go “bigger and better”.

After lunch, residents were treated to punch on the beach and a toe-dip in the ocean thanks to the surf club’s beach wheelchair and buggy.

“We’re just trying to show that the surf club isn’t just the beach, it’s the whole community,” Scott said.

Lucky Escape From Venomous Snake A young Sarina boy had a lucky escape following a sudden encounter with a snake outside his school on the last day of term.

Last Friday, four-year-old Izaiah was running to the school gates with his older brother, Oden, when a snake wrapped around his leg before darting off to hide under a nearby parked car.

In her panic Katherine bundled the fouryear-old into the car for the 10-minute drive to Sarina Hospital.

It was only after arriving at hospital and talking to doctors that she remembered first aid advice she had heard but forgotten in the panic.

His mum, Katherine, feared the worst when she heard a terrible scream.

“We arrived at school and he’s gone ahead with his older brother and all of a sudden, I hear screaming and shouting saying ‘it’s a snake, it’s a snake’,” she said.

“I had a quick look and could see what I thought could be a bite, it was a red dot and was weeping so I wasn’t going to take any

Izaiah was transferred from Sarina to Mackay Base Hospital’s Emergency Department for a series of blood tests over 12 hours to confirm the snake did not envenomate him.

Mackay Base Hospital Emergency Department Senior Medical Officer Dr Pushpa Nettle said it was still warm enough for snakes to be on the move.

Dr Nettle said the best advice was keep the person who has been bitten still and call 000.

“Apply a firm bandage over the bite site and then bandage the entire limb starting from the toes or fingers – and go up,” she said.

“Don’t ever run the risk of ignoring a snake bite based on an assumption the snake is non-venomous. Treat all snake bites as serious and call 000.”

ackay motorists are advised to take extra care on the roads over the Easter holidays to ensure everyone in the family returns home safely to loved ones.

To assist in initiating this important safety advice, Queensland Police Service (QPS) Acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream has joined forces with Emergency Services to launch the Easter Road Safety campaign.

Operation Victor Easter commenced on Saturday, April 1 and will run until Sunday, April 16, covering the entire Easter long weekend, which is expected to be a busy time on Queensland’s roads.

During this time Police will be conducting targeted operations and maintaining a highly visible presence on highways and roads to reduce trauma and fatalities across Queensland.

QPS Acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream said the school holiday periods always see increased traffic on the

Over the Easter long weekend last year, sadly one Queenslander lost their life and 60 injury crashes were recorded across the state, often resulting in life altering injuries.

“Bringing together landholders, industry experts and agencies will be the highlight for me,” Ms Barbat said.

“We’ll be connecting folk, growing their network of support and information while offering examples to motivate them on their own individual journey.”

A Paw-fect Friendship It’s Adventure Time T

he variety of adrenaline-pumping challenges in multisport adventure racing has seen the concept skyrocket in popularity around the world.

Adventure racing can include mountain biking, kayaking, road cycling, trail running and orienteering, and Mackay’s ZACH MACH Adventure Challenge involves them all.

“Being able to work as a team across many sporting disciplines rather than the emphasis being on individual achievement is what attracts to many people to adventure racing,” said Event Director Nikki Giles.

ZACH MACK Adventure Challenge was established in 2013 following the sudden passing of local adventure enthusiast Zach Roberts.

The challenge was started by Peter Lister, a former teacher at Mackay Christian College where Zach went to school and since then, it has grown in size and popularity with locals and adventure seekers from across the nation embracing the challenge.

local retirement village is realising the health benefits of encouraging residents to join together and walk their dogs in its safe and familiar environment.

A group of 11 dogs and their owners all enjoy going for walks around Breezes Retirement Village each day.

From a cute Dachshund to a Miniature Fox Terrier, a Toy Poodle to a Maltese Shih Tzu cross and Terrier Mix, there are plenty of breeds – and fast friendships are formed both between pets and their owners.

Resident, Sally James, who has lived in the village for 13 years, says she walks about a kilometre daily with fellow residents.

“The dogs promote friendship, fitness, menu planning and socialisation among us all,” she says.

“We often meet up with people afterwards.

“The three of us walk around while our fur babies are spoiled enroute with treats as they enjoy their daily exercise.

“We talk about everything and anything and for the dogs, it’s become like their happy hour.”

Sally says there are many flow-on benefits to having a pet such as fostering positive mental health.

“Keisha is part of my surrogate family and calms me if I’m feeling anxious,” she says.

“A dog offers security, companionship and helps motivate you to exercise.”

Fellow dog walker Errol has lived in the village for 12 months and says he has quickly met new friends thanks to his pooch.

“Meeting up with the ladies here has got me involved in the village and I talk to a lot of other people I wouldn’t have talked to otherwise,” he says.

The Chinese Government is watching and storing information about you but who cares?

Those short, clever videos will cater to your interests and keep you mindlessly entertained for hours … if you let it.

I have a TikTok time-frame and time-limit to ensure it doesn’t take over my life but I do get to watch health, fitness, food, real estate, politics and sport-related videos that get served up to me as I scroll through.

They have videos that test your health. There is the one that gets you to hold your breath while a red dot moves along a horizontal line to test your lung capacity. If you can hold your breath till the dot reaches the end of the line you’re not going to die this week. Which is always a relief.

There’s another one that tests your hearing. It starts with a piercing, high-frequency sound and there’s a number 80 on the screen that tells you that’s what a normal 80-year-old can hear.

Then the number starts descending and the sound gets more difficult to hear, 79, 78, 77 … it’s easy in the 70s. 59, 58, 57 … it’s getting harder, but I can still hear it pretty well.

Once it starts to get to around 40 it gets hard for me to hear and, full disclosure, I hear a faint sound at 34 but at 32 I am out, can’t hear a thing. It keeps going into the 20s and I can

only hear the sound of silence. Damn kids … most don’t need glasses to read either.

The thing about these hearing tests is that no matter how much you try to hear, forcing yourself to listen, it doesn’t make any difference. You can either hear the sound or you can’t and focusing on listening won’t help.

Life in a service industry, and certainly in real estate, is different because listening does make a difference.

There are plenty of agents who can hear just fine but they don’t listen. They don’t listen to what is important to a seller, how the seller wants things done, the process they want the agent to follow.

Sometimes the agent likes the sound of their own voice and they’re just not listening to what is important to the seller; a seller always wants the best price the market will pay but often there are other important matters such as when they want inspections, what they feel about the marketing, the signage, costs, things they are willing to do and others they don’t want to do, how they want feedback provided etc.

The same principle applies to agents who don’t listen to buyers and ignore what they want.

The Greek philosopher Epictetus said: “We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” Real estate agents need to remember that.

Is That Grant Dollar Worth It?

have long argued, that in many cases, the answer to that question is “no”. As a council we apply for grants for many reasons. In some cases, it assists in the delivery of essential items.

It is the “other cases” I wish to speak about.

Most grants involve only partial funding of any given project. The example being, that if we are the recipients of a grant of $5 million to build a “something”, on the surface it sounds great. The problem is that we have already spent close enough to a million on a business case and design etc.

Still sounds ok, spend a million to get five?

Well, woah back, we usually must match the grant dollar for dollar. So, spending 6 to get 5 does not sound quite as good, does

it?

Well, the bad news continues. Any cost overruns are our responsibility and currently some of these overruns can be nearly twice the initial forecast! But for this exercise let’s say the overrun stands at 20 per cent or around $2 million. Now we have the situation where we are up for $8 million to secure the offered $5 million.

Now where the real kicker on this whole exercise comes in, is in maintenance and depreciation. Opening a shiny new “something” that has cost $13 million provides a wonderful opportunity for those that thrive on media opportunities.

However, it saddles us with the unenviable task of covering the cost of maintaining

and depreciating that “something” every year for many years to come, not to mention the running cost – and that is wholly funded by your rates - maybe to the tune of hundreds of thousands.

While I in no way am suggesting that we do not apply for grant funding, we would do well to realise that all dollars are not created equal.

Dollars for essentials are great dollars.

Dollars for discretionary projects are dubious dollars indeed.

Coupled with this is the fact that many of our assets are decades old – many decades.

These are often things you cannot see.

Sewers, storm water lines, water services

Renewal of these is essential or we become third world. Running to failure is NOT a desirable option as repairs in this case cost multiples of what planned maintenance costs.

Now call me conservative, but for me, uninterrupted services are more important than cutting ribbons.

Terri Thompson started the Dirty Oar, a line of sun-safe outdoor apparel, after she was diagnosed with skin cancer in early 2021, not long after having her first daughter.

“I was operated on twice as they didn’t get it all the first time,” she said.

“It was really hard.

“Having a newborn, being up all hours of the night, my husband had to take time off work to help me out.

“It was a stressful time.”

Around six months later, Terri had a lightbulb moment.

“We wanted to come up with something that could help people and educate people in sun safety, so we came up with family friendly, sun safe fishing shirts,” she said.

“We want to help people not have to go through what I went through.”

The Dirty Oar offers a wide variety of cool and colourful fishing shirts for blokes, ladies and the littlies.

Stickers, hats and stubby coolers are also available, and you can even have custom fishing apparel made to commemorate that mammoth trip to the cape or dress your staff in style.

“It’s fishing apparel but it’s family friendly

sun safe apparel, perfect for going camping or trips to the Cape, things like that,” Terri said.

While the business is run predominantly online, Terri will personally deliver throughout Mackay free of charge.

Not only is the Dirty Oar keeping the people of Mackay, Queensland and Australia sun safe, a portion of every sale also gets donated to Skin Cancer Australia.

“I feel we are so blessed to have this opportunity to help others,” Terri said.

Terri says one of the best parts of being a woman in business is being her own boss and having more time to spend with her family.

We tend to have lower super balances than our male counterparts, whether that’s from maternity leave or part time work.

Filling The Gap In Automotive Training Do you know why Post Graduate Training in an Automotive Facility is so Critical?

Interestingly a recent question posed by a Local Leader in the Training industry prompted this article.

How as an employer do I bridge the gap in training modules from what is learned in an Panel Technician Apprenticeship? To what is required in the industry today?

This question highlights a number of issues - the most important one: There is a GAP: Noting that there is no requirement as a business owner that I must provide additional training beyond that of an apprenticeship.

My organisation understands that as the technology in today’s vehicle expands to include Aluminium and Structural Steels – lightweight for improved fuel efficiencies - Hybrid and Electric Vehicles and their complexity and workings, we must continue to advance our skill set.

Since the introduction of I-Car Australia in 2006 we have provided post graduate training for our team so they could understand the intricate nature of what was coming.

This is an organisation dedication to Safe and quality repair of each and every vehicle.

Core modules required to complete a Panel Technician Apprenticeship Cert III have changed to incorporate some of this required information. The challenge is of course that existing modules need to remain for the foundation of this skill set to remain.

GREAT PRICES AND GROWER SHED MEETINGS T he Wilmar grower marketing team has been busy talking to growers about the great prices on offer for the upcoming season and beyond.

It is good to see growers continue to average up their forward prices as the market posted new season to date highs over the last month.

Regular training is essential in any automotive facility

The potential for new pathways is opened with possibility to have individualised Technicians that can take the direction of Aluminium Specialist- or Electric/Hybrid specialist just to name a few.

In my faciality importance is placed on the understanding of the vehicle and why there is a need to fund and make this training available to our team.

Ultimately the consumer should be aware that this is an unregulated industry. There is no license required to own, or operate a Repair Facility. Individual technicians are not licensed. It Is not even a requirement that there be a qualified technician in a facility. My advice is do some research and make sure you specify your choice when you need a Repairer.

With the northern hemisphere crops cutting out a bit quicker than anticipated, there is even more necessity for the upcoming Brazilian crop to get on the water as soon as possible.

Add in a volatile AUD, thanks to the recent financial uncertainty, and there may be the opportunity to see those prices again.

The high prices are also benefiting the tail end of 2022 pricing. For growers who have allocated tonnes to the Production Risk Pool, the forecasted price as at the end of February was just over $690/t Actual.

Similarly, growers who are using the GMPRS pricing mechanism have been able to lock in prices above $700/t Actual for any tonnes not yet priced.

One of the initiatives this year has been the introduction of grower shed meetings to give growers an update on factors that are affecting the price of sugar, as well as a reminder of other marketing products and services.

In the Mackay and Whitsunday regions, our local marketing consultants Angus McKerrow and Shirley Norris have been organising small groups of growers and presenting the latest Wilmar research on trade flows and market outlooks in an informal and interactive way.

Where Have All The Tradies Gone?

Mackay is in the grips of a tradesperson shortage – how do we solve it?

“

We have all the parts, but not the people,” is a common declamation of Mackay business owners as they face the continued lack of tradespeople.

Northern Queensland is not alone in experiencing a significant shortage of skilled workers – a lingering challenge for Mackay’s economy and particularly its small business owners.

So, why is that the case?

Some claim a lack of investment in vocational education and training programs is to blame, others that a changing work philosophy has “killed all the carpenters”: young people are resoundingly pursuing other career paths, especially those in the technology industry or office work.

The “university push” has led younger generations to see their future in office space.

Yet, all agree that shortage of tradespeople is not only an issue for individual businesses but also has a broader impact on the region's

economy.

Businesses are unable to keep up with demand, leading to delays, reduced productivity, and increased costs. An enormous ripple effect on other industries that rely heavily on the skills of tradespeople.

The trades need to survive – their part in the play is as crucial as any – and they’re a pillar of the region's economy.

To address the shortage of tradespeople in Northern Queensland, concerted efforts to invest in vocational education and training programs to bridge the skills gap have been suggested – but what does Mackay think?

Men’s Day Art Show Expands DANCING

fter a successful inaugural event last year, Shed Happens Mackay are once again celebrating International Men’s Day (IMD) with its annual Art Show.

Partnering with the Mackay Art Society, Shed Happens are expanding IMD 2023 celebrations this year by opening the Art Show to more youth with two groups in the Emergent Artist categories.

The theme for IMD 2023 is the third pillar of IMD, ‘Health and Well Being of all Generations of Men’, and this will be the theme for artists to address in their works.

“We want to get the youth involved and we want to get the youth thinking about their health and wellbeing and their health and wellbeing when they become adults,” Shed Happens Mackay Convenor Frank Cowell said.

“Our responsibility is to raise our families and our children with good, healthy ideas.”

Entries opened on April 1 and can be accessed through Art Suppliers, Mackay Regional Council outlets and online at the SHED Happens Mackay Facebook Page.

An Entry Fee of $10 is applied to every piece of art and artists are limited to two artworks per person.

There are four sections - Best In Show, Art on Canvas, Art on Paper and Emergent Artist (9 -19 years of age) - each with prize money for the winners and 2nd and 3rd prizes in three of the sections.

Entries will close on August 10 before the artworks are displayed at the Mackay Art Society Rooms in Beaconsfield from Friday September 1 to Sunday September 3.

ff the back of their record-breaking triple j Hottest 100 appearance, seeing three tracks in the top six of the countdown, beloved outfit Spacey Jane has announced a regional Australia tour bringing the iconic indie rockers to Mackay in June.

The band’s drummer and manager Kieran Lama had a chat with our journalist Sam to talk about their meteoric rise to stardom and the sound that got them there.

When I was living in Brisbane, I remember a friend inviting me to see this band Spacey Jane playing at the zoo. Suddenly, I think you played three sold-out shows at the zoo and now you’re one of the biggest bands in the country. Did that rise in popularity feel as rapid from the inside as it did from the outside?

Definitely. It felt like it came out of nowhere for us, as well. After Sunlight came out and within the context of the pandemic, it just hit us without us really getting a chance to catch up to it, which is honestly the best thing that could’ve happened.

It was really great to feel like things were moving so quickly and only now have we really had the opportunity to catch our breath and look back with a fair amount of gratitude more than anything, other than being a little bit of a headscratcher as to what on earth happened. It’s been super special, and I think all of our lives got turned upside down pretty quickly.

You use the term headscratcher but, if you had to guess, what do you feel are the reasons for the sudden explosion?

I have a lot of confidence in the songs themselves and I can say that because I don’t write them, I just play the drums, so I think Caleb (singer/guitarist/songwriter) tapped into something really special.

Especially in 2020 when times were tough for a lot of people in terms of becoming a very introspective circumstance. I think his writing, the lyrics and also maybe the way we present and the way we are as people and as a band identity-wise, I think it was something that people could really connect with. I think guitar music will always be a staple in Australia and we’re just happy to bear that torch, even if just for a little bit. We could also just be a very lucky group of people who were doing the right thing at the right time, who knows?

Within that Australian guitar music scene, you’ve crafted a pretty distinctive sound and you can hear bands replicating it all over the country, who were your influences in crafting that sound?

like we wanted to sound a certain way, I guess it’s just the natural conclusion of the four of us in a room together with access to recording equipment and cool shit in a studio.

We started just bashing instruments in a shed listening to stuff like early Kings of Leon, the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, that kind of thing. We didn’t so much idolise the rock and roll lifestyle but the sound of that era, the early 2000s indie rock reformation, I suppose. Songwriter-wise, Caleb, and we all do, love Wilco, Coldplay, that kind of stuff. I think part of the sound that we have is the product of the circumstances in which we were making music. We were just playing in a shed together all the time. We didn’t know the first thing about equipment or gear so we just played for the fun of it on the weekends. As we got more and more into it, found a bit of a groove in the studio and get an understanding of how to make things the way we wanted to make them, I guess it just developed from there. It’s interesting because it’s never felt

How important is it to you and the band to tour regional areas like Mackay?

It’s super great that we can actually do it.

We want to take advantage of that opportunity and make sure that we’re going to places. A lot of us grew up in regional WA so if we had the opportunity to see artists we loved back then, it would’ve meant the world to us. There’s definitely more in the works in terms of creative ways to tour Australia because there is so much of this country that we haven’t seen and would love to see. The fact that being in a band facilitates that to some level is pretty astounding.

I can say from what I’m hearing around the place that Mackay is very excited, what can we expect from your show in

June?

I reckon a fair bit of sweat on the stage. We tend to give a lot of energy in the live shows.

I mean, I’m sitting down so it’s chill for me, but the others are jumping around and going crazy, Ashton in particular gets a lot of hang time. It’s going to be fun. I think we are very much a live band, first and foremost. We played a lot of gigs around Perth before we ever got the opportunity to leave for the eastern states so it’s something we take a lot of pride in and we really want to put our best foot forward, especially for places that we’re playing for the first time.

We’ve got something to prove and I hope we can do that.

ucom Theatre has announced the cast of its July production, Perfect Wedding, a comedy by Robin Hawdon directed by Kathryn Evans.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera is packed full of sentimental pirates, blundering policeman, absurd adventures and improbable paradoxes.

Frederic, a pirate’s apprentice, falls headover-heels in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley.

Frederic is due to be released from his apprenticeship on his 21st birthday, but there’s a snag.

Born on 29 February, Frederic discovers that he is technically still a youngster.

Although very much in love, his dedication to duty is unshakeable.

It is also the third show that Jeanette Oberg and Bernie Camilleri-Cheng have produced together, with assistance from Nicole Thomson as Musical Director.

Congratulations were also given to Maureen Coleman, Ken Sanders, John Irvine and Bronwyn Grannall who were elected Life Members of the Theatre at the AGM. In her report as Convener of Kucom’s Fundraising and Grants Subcommittee, Vice President Maureen Coleman made an announcement that will be welcome news to regular patrons.

“It is ... with great pleasure that I have been asked by the committee to inform you all that we have put in the order for the seating and the deposit has been paid,” she said.

“We hope to see installation after the production of Perfect Wedding in July.”

The installation of a retractable seating system will come ahead of a busy 2023 season, with Victor Scott directing Things I Know To Be True by acclaimed Australian playwright Andrew Bovell in October.

Victor is well known to Mackay audiences as the director of Ruthless and First Date for Mackay Musical Comedy Players, and more specifically to Kucom audiences for his ground-breaking 2021 production of When the Rain Stops Falling, also by Andrew Bovell.

orth Mackay Athletics sent its team of 19 athletes up the highway to take on the Little Athletics State Championships in Townsville on the March 27 weekend.

ackay Cutters’ early season woes continued in the QRL Hostplus Cup after a disappointing 38-26 loss to the top-of-the-table Central Queensland Capras at BB Print Stadium last Saturday night.

The local club came home with a series of spectacular results, not only as a number of its athletes achieved personal bests in their chosen events, but also as a number of the young stars made it through to the finals.

Many of the club’s athletes competed for the first time in an eye opening and valuable experience for them to carry into the future.

North Mackay Athletics spokesperson Kayla Porter congratulated the athletes for making the selection to attend the event.

“Three of our athletes Hayley Colless, Toby Rule and Ayla Moon were success in winning several medals,” Ms Porter said.

“And we are particularly proud of them, alongside our other amazing representatives.”

Hayley, in the under 14s, competed in the 200-metre sprint, coming 10th, and competed in the 90-metre hurdles and the 200-metre hurdles, winning the Gold in each of these events, while also achieving personal bests.

Ayla finished the weekend claiming a silver in the 800-metre.

Additionally, Liana Herrington claimed Gold in the U14 girls Pole Vault at Queensland Athletics State Championships in Brisbane. She is currently ranked third in Australia.

The Cutters opened the scoring after eight minutes with a smart try by centre Flynn Camilleri.

Three quick tries by Capras winger Brandon Roberts, lock Aaron Teroi and the crafty Kurt Donoghoe gave the visitors a handy 18-6 lead before the Cutters rallied with a four pointer by winger Jake Riley and a second try for the quick-stepping Camilleri off a pinpoint Cook kick.

Experienced NRL winger Edrick Lee dashed over for the Capras fourth try of the match soon after to give his side a 2416 lead at the interval.

In an absorbing second stanza, the Capras staved off a determined Cutters challenge – extending their lead with tries by Samuel Yegip and Donoghoe after winger Logan Dillon and utility forward Sean Mullany had kept the home side in the hunt with crucial four pointers.

The Cutters suffered a huge blow in the lead up to the clash after key playmaker Brandon Finnegan was ruled out indefinitely with a fractured knee.

His replacement Bayley Gill combined well with Cook and the elusive Camilleri with prop Hiale Roycroft and back rower Asher O’Donnell working tirelessly in the forwards.

There was better news for the Cutters in the BMD Premiership when the women posted a hard-fought 24-16 triumph over the Capras.

Dynamic fullback China Polata was the best on ground with her power running a feature as the Cutters registered their third win of the season.

Other Mackay players to impress were lock Shannon Mato, centre Libby Surha, prop Essay Banu, second rower Mackenzie Weale, hooker Emma Manzelmann and five eighth Alisha Foord.

The Cutters sealed second spot in the Harvey Norman Under 19s Womens series after toppling the Capras 24-8 while Mackay bowed out of the Under 16 Cyril Connell Challenge and Under 18 Mal Meninga Cup despite recording emphatic victories over the Capras.

The Under 16s chalked up a 28-6 win and the Under 18s a thumping 46-16 triumph in the Mal Meninga Cup.

ougher the challenge the stronger the response – that is the inspiring life motto for Mackay’s outstanding netball prospect Shaylah Pershouse.

Netball is a way of life for dedicated Shaylah, who is one of the rising young stars at St Patrick’s College and the Mackay Netball Association.

Shaylah will represent the Capricornia region at this month’s Queensland Secondary Schools 13-15yrs Netball State Championships from April 27-30 at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

As a just reward for recent stand out performances, the athletic Shaylah has also been promoted to the St Patrick’s senior squad for the 2023 Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball Carnival that will also be staged in Brisbane from June 25-30.

The State Secondary Schools tournament is the perfect lead-in event for this year’s QISSN Championships with Shaylah to be joined by St Patrick’s colleague and talented centre Tenille Cotter in the Capricornia 13-15yrs team.

To test herself against the best, young Shaylah will line up in three competitions in the Mackay Netball Association this season – Under 16A, Division One and Premier League.

“Playing against older and more experienced netballers brings out the best in my game,” revealed Shayla.

“I really enjoy the challenge as a goalkeeper to make life difficult for the shooters

Since stepping up into the senior ranks, the lanky Pershouse has made every post a winner.

“It can get feisty on court but I just focus on my role, listen and learn and simply soak up the experience,” Shaylah added.

Like all aspiring netballers in Queensland, an ambitious Shaylah dreams of one day playing for the Firebirds and Australian Diamonds.

The star goalkeeper will get a taste of the big time when she participates on the Wanderers Australia International Netball tour of England and France in early 2024.

Shaylah and good friends Tenille Cotter and goal defender Kacee Ziegeler will tour with an Australian side where they’ll play eight matches against top club, county and representative teams in the United Kingdom.

adies social bowls winners this week were: Bev McDonald, Lesley Baumgarten and Daphne Offield. Runners up were: Min Andrew, Sue Roscoe, Wendy McGee and Anne Smith.

Saturday morning we had the semi-finals of the District Pairs Championship between 3 North Mackay teams and Airlie Beach team. Going through into the afternoon’s final were from Airlie Beach club, Joan McGrath and Ladda Purdie and from North Mackay club, Lorraine Silman and Lorraine Lemke.

We were all treated to the final of all finals. It was neck and neck, end for end, and some amazing bowls being played by both teams. The winners of the District Pairs were Airlie Beach. A huge congratulations to the winners and to everyone that played in this wonderful event.

our of our Dolphins travelled to the big smoke this past week for the Queensland Representative School Sport Swimming Championships held at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre. They represented their school district, Capricornia – the 10–12-year-old’s swimming Sunday to Tuesday, 26-28 March and the 13–19-yearold’s swimming Wednesday to Friday, 2931 March.

ackay Meteors and Meteorettes confirmed their NBL1 North championship credentials with rollicking victories over the Townsville Flames and Heat last Friday night at Mackay Basketball Stadium.

Highlights of the week included: 1. Personal bests being achieved by our swimmers; 2. Many a friend being made – the event allowing swimmers to interact with other clubs in their district which ranges from Pindi Pindi in the North down to Miriam Vale in the South;

3. Madison’s U11 Medley Relay Team receiving a silver medal;

Jamiey Doevendans’ Meteorettes overcame a slow start to sink the Flames and notch their first win of the season with top games from Bobongie, Dale, Phoebe Holmes, Madison MacDonald, Hannah Jensen and Jaye Willis.

4. Madison was a finalist in the 100m freestyle event; and 5. Madison receiving a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle event.

They led 19-11 at the first break; 46-28 at half time and 73-45 at the end of the third quarter with the dynamic Dale and skilful Bobongie stamping their mark.

Madison will now travel to the National Representative School Swimming in Sydney in August. What a great result for our youngest travelling Dolphin.

Congratulations to all our swimmers who were selected and who travelled to Brisbane to compete – your club is truly proud of all your achievements.

Superb performances from star guards Denesha Bobongie and Davida Dale inspired the Meteorettes to a 90-69 triumph over the reigning champions while superstar recruit Isaac White produced another top class display to mastermind an 82-64 win over the Heat in the main game.

Young gun Bobongie, a former Australian Sapphires junior representative, turned in a mighty showing with 26 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks on 12/18 shooting with the flamboyant Dale just as impressive.

The 26 year old American guard finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals and proved instrumental in the 21-point victory.

17 year old guard Holmes contributed 14 points.

Mackay Meteors made it back-to-wins after taming a powerful and well drilled Heat side in humid conditions.

Meteors coach Joel Khalu praised his charges for their wholehearted effort and will to win – keeping the Heat at bay with bustling defence.

Leading the way was maestro guard White who followed up his opening round 40 points effort with another masterclass performance.

The off contract Tasmanian JackJumpers guard demonstrated his silky skills for Mackay by finishing with 34 points, eight steals, five rebounds and five assists to spearhead a rousing 18 point win over the Heat.

White was ably supported by Djery Jean Baptiste (12 points and eight rebounds), guard Isaiah Lee (11 points, two assists and two steals), guard Tyler Williams and shooter Kye Medhurst as the Meteors led 23-17, 52-33 and 63-55 after the three breaks.

Road Runners Racing Report RUNNING

T

he annual Tilse Toddle was once again a great success with over fifty runners tackling the loop style 5km and 10km course.

The flat, fast course scored a few personal best times including Natalie Lorraway and Peter Wright in the 5km.

Club President Tim Magoffin thanked the hosts for the arranging perfect running conditions, ie no blazing sun and lower temperatures than has historically been the norm.

The light sprinkly rain and cooling breezes were a bonus and even though heavy storm clouds were threatening, they did

not open as per the weather forecast.

Mackay Road Runners welcomed many returning members including the elusive Shane Barben who as always puts in 100% whenever he runs despite his training schedule.

Excellent performances also came from Justin, Oliver and Toby Rule, Lily and Luke Leven after very successful athletics competitions in Cannonvale.

Many thanks to volunteers and runners for assisting in set up and pack down of the Tilse Toddle including Walker Murray, Luke Leven, Andrew Short, Tim Magoffin and Paul Tilse.

Some light, pale ale refreshments were on

sale post-race with all sale proceeds going to Pancare (Pancreatic Cancer) in the lead up to the 10km Club Championship Shawn Claydon Memorial 10km Shield in four weeks.

This Sunday’s social 5km & 10km starts from Zambrero City Centre, corner of Gregory and Gordon Streets at 4:30pm.
