ine Special Olympics Mackay athletes have done Mackay proud on the national stage, travelling to Launceston for the Special Olympics National Games in October.

Special Olympics Mackay was founded in 2012 and currently has 33 athletes competing across

powerlifting, table tennis, basketball and ten pin bowling.

After hosting the Special Olympics State Titles CQ Games in Mackay in April 2021, nine of those 33 were selected in the Queensland team.

Annie, Chloe, TJ and Shane travelled to Launceston to compete in basketball and Corey, Donna, Frank, Paul and Tegan to compete in ten pin bowling.

SOUTHERN BUYERS TO YOUR PROPERTY

If you are planning to sell a house or unit in Mackay, one of the big things to consider is the emergence of southern buyers and having a strategy to attract them to your property.

One of the biggest changes in Mackay real estate is that southern buyers have entered the market in a big way and are now a very important factor for sellers to consider when putting their property on the market.

If your agent doesn’t have an agency-wide approach to attracting and selling to southern buyers then you are missing out on the opportunity to get the best-possible price for your property.

Gardian real estate agents are very aware of this change and we are now implementing an

Several southern buyer groups are in play here: we have the southern buyers from capital cities wanting to escape to live in regional areas such as Mackay because it offers affordable housing options; excellent health, educational, community and recreational services; superb livability including boating, fishing, beaches and beautiful bushland; and quick flights to Brisbane.

That’s the people who want to move to Mackay. The factors mentioned above, including liveability and services are absolutely factors they take into account but for them it is more transactional, less emotional. Price, rental yield and the Mackay economy are the big factors this group are looking at. They also know that prices are falling from significant highs in their capital cities. An expected 20 per cent drop on a $1 million property in Sydney or Melbourne means a $200,000 loss.

That’s a big risk when you also consider that the rental yields are much lower in those cities than they are in the far lower-priced Mackay market.

Apart from concerns about capital city real estate markets, many investors are worried about the fragile state of stock markets and are choosing not to put their money there.

So, when they look at Mackay’s lower-priced real estate market, with average house prices under $450,000, rental vacancies of under 1 per cent and rental yields massively superior to capital cities, investing in Mackay becomes a very real option.

That’s where Gardian real estate comes into it. Again, we are implementing a strategy that ensures we introduce our clients’ properties to those investors and smooth the way for them to compete for your property and make offers.

Dr Stephens Saved My Life!

A

Mackay local has come forward to share his personal story about the moment disgraced Urologist Dr Daryl Stephens gave him hope following a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Dr Stephens was suspended almost two months ago following accusations that he blew his nose on hospital drapes during an operation.

Hearing of the media frenzy surrounding what he believes is “a personal attack” on a “very good surgeon”, Merv Bent decided to come forward and “set the record straight”.

In 2002, Mr Bent was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and luckily survived.

He met Dr Stephens when he moved to Mackay shortly afterwards and saw him several times for “block-ups” and routine checks.

Just over four years ago Mr Bent’s symptoms returned and he was referred to a specialist in Townsville who informed that his cancer “couldn’t be helped” and that he would need to “get his affairs in order”.

“He said that the only chance was to go

“I rang Dr Stephens on the personal number he had given me, and he told me to come and see him at 7.30am the next morning.

“When he saw my scans, he said that he was 60-70 per cent sure he could get it!”

Following this, Mr Bent underwent a sixand-a-half-hour operation which was a success.

“I am now fully in remission, and it is thanks to him,” he said.

“I think it’s so sad that they’re trying to get him – it sounds like someone’s got an axe to grind.

“The day I saw him on the front page, I sent him a personal message – I wish the hospital would come to their senses and find the real culprits.”

Mr Bent went on to say that he has had nothing but good experiences at Mackay Base Hospital and that the nurses and staff are terrific.

Work will take place between the hours of 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Traffic control will be in place to assist traffic through the work site, with up to 20-minute delays heading to Finch Hatton Gorge expected.

There will also be some noise and dust disturbance with various plant and equipment on site.

This project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme and Mackay Regional Council.

ocal councils are working together to fight against waste and are pleading: “Let’s get it right!”

The “Let’s get it Right” campaign is being launched in line with Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week, which aims to encourage people to take responsibility for their recycling to minimise waste and manage material resources correctly.

National Recycling Week runs from Monday, November 7, until Sunday, November 13. The theme this year is “Waste isn’t Waste until it’s Wasted”.

Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regional councils have joined together to create a united voice on recycling right.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said good recycling started at home, and all residents were encouraged to “get it right” when they were throwing rubbish into their yellow-lidded recycling bin.

“By ensuring only items that can be processed at our Materials Recovery Facility are placed in the recycling bin, you are helping to reduce contamination at our plant and therefore reduce the amount of waste going to landfill,” Mayor Williamson said.

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Julie Hall said it is important that we all work together to ensure our residents are recycling at every opportunity, and that we are doing it correctly.

“Waste is an important issue globally, but change must start at home. By making a simple change, such as recycling drink bottles or composting leftovers, you can make a huge impact on the amount of waste that ends up in landfill,” Mayor Hall said.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said good recycling habits had a flow on effect for our environment.

“If we can get it right, we are not just saving ratepayers’ money in waste disposal but ensuring less waste is going to landfill, which is great for our environment,” Mayor Baker said.

St Helens Beach No Longer Busting For Comfort

N

o one should have to drive 200km for a toilet, but Councillor Alison Jones said that’s exactly what would happen when the St Helens Beach community hosted events.

“Someone would have to drive into town to the hire company, pick one up and then return it after the event,” she said.

The Community Grants committee awarded a $7,350 grant for the purchase of a mobile toilet. It was one of 27 grants, with the combined value of $176,601, to be approved as part of this round of Community Grants.

“Having this mobile toilet will also allow the group to assist other community groups in

the vicinity of St Helens Beach – like Calen, Kolijo, Mt Ossa and Pindi Pindi – when they hold events,” Cr Jones said.

Cr Jones said it was also great to see funds awarded to the Breakaway Riders Club of Mackay to purchase first aid and safety equipment.

“The committee approved $4072 to allow the club to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED) and a satellite phone,” she said.

“Most of the horse rides and camps the club conducts are isolated and out of standard mobile phone reception range.

“The rides also cover rough terrain that is inaccessible for motorised vehicles, so having this equipment will make a huge difference in an emergency.”

piece of World War I history will be donated to the Mackay RSL Sub Branch as part of Remembrance Day next Friday.

A 7.58cm Minenwerfer Light Rifled Trench Mortar will be presented to the RSL by eight army personnel from the Lavarack Barracks in Townsville at the Remembrance Day service at Jubilee Park next week.

The 7.58cm Minenwerfer was the smallest of the German mine projectors used in WWI and sat atop a removable twowheeled carriage assembly, making it a portable siege weapon.

The design of the mortar began in 1909 and continued into 1914 when production was established at the outbreak of the war.

Once in service, the system was initially issued to Imperial German Army engi-

neering crews who effectively utilised it against Belgian and French fortifications and field obstacles.

After the stalemate had developed, the weapon was further issued as a fire support weapon alongside traditional field mortars.

The artillery piece was found on a property in the Pioneer Valley and sent to Townville to be refurbished before it will be gifted back to the Mackay RSL Sub Branch with the hope of the piece to be displayed at the new RSL riverfront facility.

The RSL Mackay Sub Branch will be selling commemorative memorabilia at Parkside Plaza from today, Friday November 4 until Thursday, November 10 from 9:00am to 3:00pm daily before the Remembrance Day Service at the Jubilee Park Cenotaph on Friday, November 11 from 10:30am.

Mackay woman is thanking a last-minute decision to grab an entry into last weekend’s Saturday Gold Lotto draw for her $1.5 million win.

local college has taken the top gong in Queensland for its dedication and discipline in teaching construction.

Holy Spirit College was named State Champion for its Certificate I in Construction.

The Design and Technology Teachers Association (DATTA) Student Subject Award program has been established to recognise excellence and outstanding achievements in Design and Technologies subjects across Queensland.

Five Holy Spirit College students – Nash Byrne, Richard Vassallo, Quinn Vella, Dylan Eden and Baylen Waldon – were nominated by the College for their workmanship in constructing a cubby house as part of their studies to gain a Certificate I in Construction.

Mr Michael Pace, Dean of Design and Technologies at Holy Spirit College said, “Guided by their teachers, Mr Peter Mallet and Mr Chris Kidd, we are proud of our students’ dedication to their studies and are thrilled to be named State Champions for Certificate I in Construction.”

igher education students and apprentices who are planning on studying with CQUniversity Mackay in 2023 can apply for scholarships through Community Bank Sarina Bendigo Bank’s scholarship program.

There is $20,000 in scholarships available, with two $6000 higher education scholarships for undergraduate degrees and two $4000 apprenticeship scholarships.

Community Bank Sarina Board Deputy Chair Maree Franettovich said the scholarships will “financially assist students to stay in our community and close to their family, friends and support networks whilst studying their chosen career path”.

“These students will have a broad range of opportunities to study and work within our region to help build our local skilled workforce,” Ms Franettovich said.

“We always have a diverse range of applicants studying and working in different industries from higher education students in business, digital media and agriculture, to fabrication and plumbing apprentices.”

2022 higher education scholarship recipient Taya Murray said that it was while at Sarina State High School that she learned about biofuels and “found the mix of chemistry and mechanics really fascinating”.

“A career goal of mine is to work at Sarina’s ethanol plant, and this scholarship is assisting me to gain my degree and make that possible – I really appreciate the Bank’s support and confidence in me,” Taya said.

A total of 12 hospitals were recognised for their high standard of care at the Australian Stroke Coalition Quality Stroke Service Excellence Awards last month, and the Mackay team also scored the award in 2020.

Passion For Mining Careers STEM From Tech-Driven Workshops

entral Queensland students are exploring the magnitude of exciting career opportunities on offer in the resources sector at a series of workshops delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC).

Thanks to support from Anglo American, about 75 students from Middlemount State High School and Tieri State School have this week bolstered their science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM), and trade-based skills across two days of interactive educational experiences.

Last month, Grade 10 students rotated through a series of trade-based activities, opening their minds to what is needed for a safe and successful trade career, and in the afternoon the cohort put their coding knowledge to the test as they programmed Lego EV3 robots to drive autonomously around a simulated mine site.

QRC Director of Skills, Education and Diversity, Ms Katrina-Lee Jones said there has never been a better time for young, en-

thusiastic people with a passion for problem-solving and innovative technology to join our industry.

“The resources and energy sector employs some of the most skilled and highest-paid professionals across a range of technical disciplines, and an enduring skills shortage means there is no shortage of rewarding job opportunities for the next generation,” Ms Jones said.

“From auto electricians and welders to environmental scientists and mining engineers, there’s an abundance of STEM and vocational pathways available, and the workshops this week have given the students a sneak-peek into some of the sector’s most in-demand professions.”

New Direction For Porters Northern Beaches O ver the past 139 years, the Porters Group has continued to service, grow, and evolve within the Mackay and Whitsunday regions. The latest addition to the Porters Group network is the Porters Homemaker Centre, at the Porters Northern Beaches location.

new report has confirmed the growing contribution of Queensland’s resources sector to the state’s economy.

Comprehensive Insurance offers the highest level of protection.

A Queensland Resources Council (QRC) report released today shows the amount of money spent by mining and energy companies on local goods and services rose by $1 billion, or four per cent, in 2020-21 to reach $27.7 billion.

QRC Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said the report is an important measure of the commitment of member companies to supporting local businesses and supply chains in the regions in which they operate across Queensland.

“The $27.7 billion spent locally in 2020-21 means resources companies operating in Queensland are now spending a record 82 per cent of their total procurement budgets in this state, which is a great outcome,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“This means the benefits flow through to everyone, from the companies providing and servicing the big mining machinery to the local food store providing catering for functions and conferences that a resources company might host.”

Mr Macfarlane said while taxes and royalties from resources companies help governments pay for hospitals, schools and essential services, the report shows how important the sector is to supporting local jobs and economies, particularly in regional areas.

The report shows Queensland’s coal sector accounted for 70 per cent of the total spend on goods and services in the Sunshine State in 2021-22, metals came in at 16 per cent, gas 11 per cent and 3 per cent from other resource activity.

SES PREPARE THE COMMUNITY FOR DISASTER SEASON

ith disaster season upon us, the Mackay SES Group has already been engaged in jobs and activations assisting the public with sandbagging, tarping roofs and clearing fallen trees and debris.

For Group Leader Jo-Ann Clout, helping people in times of disaster has been a lifelong passion since helping her parents who were involved in the SES in Bowen.

“Even before I was old enough to join, I used to go down to the Bowen shed with them in times of emergency and help with the telephone calls,” Jo-Ann said.

Jo-Ann joined the Bowen SES in her own right in 1998 where she was a volunteer for 18 months before moving to Mackay and trans-

ferring to the Mackay SES group.

Filling the role of Group Leader for the last 10 years, Jo-Ann is involved in the management of the day-to-day operational functions of the group, coordinating recruiting and managing occupational health and safety, ensuring everyone is competent and up to date with training.

“No one forces you to do anything, you’re a volunteer and that’s an important thing for people to remember.

In an average disaster-free week, Jo-Ann would commit 8-10 hours to the SES, also working as a teacher with special needs children, a marriage celebrant and an art teacher, but she says it’s all worth it.

“If it wasn’t a brilliant organisation with great people, I wouldn’t be here still,” she said.

“Just seeing the devastation that the families had to deal with and helping them sometimes have to throw out a lifetime of memories, that was really hard,” she said.

“To be able to help them with that process was really rewarding.”

“The Mackay unit is very proactive when it comes to education in the community,” said SES Local Controller Alex McPhee.

“We go to a lot of different events to, not only promote SES, but to promote disaster management in the home.

“The education is getting through to people which is a really good thing because people are really wanting to know how to protect themselves and look after their family and property.

“The appetite for the education is definitely here in the Mackay region.”

Jo-Ann also says that she has gained a wide variety of skills, including tying knots, fourwheel-driving, as well as leadership and life skills.

“I can do more than I thought I was capable of,” she said.

“You get lots of life skills that you can learn here in a safe environment taught by professional people and go out into the real world and do things for yourself,” added Alex.

We do have, on our community Facebook, some self-help videos, including how to make your own sandbags and sandbag your own property, so that you can be prepared and you don’t need to wait for a team to come and assist you.

•M ake sure your gutters are clean - “It does make a difference. You can get water in your roof and people ring the SES but if it’s a big weather event, we could have 300 other calls for assistance so whatever people can do to minimise the load on our volunteers is greatly appreciated.”

POINT A recent edition of the New Yorker magazine featured a clever cartoon that nicely summed up the strange world we live in, where young people know nothing about some things but have far more knowledge than adults about other things.

The cartoon depicted a baby sitting in a high-chair, being spoon-fed by its father.

The caption had the father saying: “After I introduce you to solids, I’m going to need your help with some computer stuff.”

Some of us of a certain age are very familiar with having to ask our children to help with “computer stuff ”.

In my case, my then-11-year-old son set up our Netflix and other streaming services and is, fortunately, usually on hand to address IT issues as they emerge.

In this IT age, it is the first time in the history of the planet that children can teach adults how certain things work.

I’m not so rude as to say young people are one-trick ponies but their knowledge and easy facility with technology is not matched, in my experience, in other areas of life.

I was reminded of this when I was explaining to a young person I work with

that the housing precinct in Glenella that runs off Davey St has streets named after Australian cricketers.

“For example, Bradman Drive is named after Don Bradman,” I told her. Her blank stare showed very clearly that my colleague did not know who Don Bradman was. She had heard of Bradman Drive but not Don Bradman.

I was initially surprised, after all I grew up in a country where everyone knew who Don Bradman was.

But when I thought about it, Bradman died about 21 years ago, around the time my colleague was born. Australia has changed. It is more multi-cultural with different complexities.

Cricket is no longer the only thing you can watch on your TV (or i-pad, i-phone or laptop) during summer.

Why would a 22-year-old woman know who Donald Bradman was? It’s a bit sad but not her fault.

I have a young sales associate called Skye who works as a buyers’ agent in my team but also looks after videos and social media posts to help market the properties we are selling.

But they’d still need Skye for their social media.

“Singing in the choir at St Paul’s is my Christmas,” says Bronwyn Grannall, President of Kucom Theatre, who joined the church as a result of attending a Christmas service, and has led two theatre productions of the Vicar of Dibley.

Rev. Dr Julia Pitman, who has sung in church and community choirs all her life and has co-ordinated courses in church music, believes that, “Singing is fun, a great way to make friends, and is good for your mental health.”

Above all, carol singing helps lead peo-

ple in worship. It is an articulation of the Christian faith.

“There is nothing better than rehearsing Christmas carols in a small group in an old church building where people have sung and prayed together for more than 150 years. As we sing, we pray,” Rev. Pitman said.

our years ago, Shed Happens Mackay started to celebrate International Men’s Day with a fundraising breakfast, aiming to lift up the men of Mackay.

The 2022 edition of the breakfast is nearing where the Mackay Man Of The Year will be named from nine proud nominees.

Shed Happens Mackay Convenor Frank Cowell said being nominated is an honour.

“We don’t lift up and celebrate the positive things a bloke does very often,” he said.

“The average bloke in the street who does his very best at being a dad, a husband, a provider, that’s not very often celebrated, and the idea of Man of the Year is for that to be celebrated and for people to nominate blokes who might not make the cut, but it identifies their qualities.”

ach Year on World Scout Day, (August 1), Scouting Leadership Awards are announced. The Awards are presented at Government House. If recipients aren’t able to go to Brisbane to receive their award, they have the option of it being presented at a suitable function in their own District.

The Hibiscus Coast District (HCD) awards were presented at a special parade which was held on Saturday 15th October at the JOTA JOTI weekend at Rowallan Park when there were many youth members and leaders present to join in celebrations.

It was announced that former Banksia Venturer Scout Leader Mrs Joann Brzozowski would be presented with the Silver

Emu Award for contributing significantly to the Wellbeing of Scouting. Joann has been instrumental in having a large number of Venturer Scouts achieve their peak award which is the Queen’s Scout Award.

Joann will be presented with her award at a suitable time. Joann is now a Qld Branch Advisor to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme with Scouting.

The Silver Koala Award for a high level of distinguished service were presented to Greg Milne and Dougal McWhinney.

Congratulations to all leaders and Rover Scouts in particular the ones who have performed above and beyond what is expected of them. Scouting is in Good Hands with the standard and qualifications that is required of the Scouting Leaders of today.

A

Mackay-based filmmaker has entered her short film into an international competition, asking for local support to put Mackay on the filmmaking map.

Writer, director and producer (among many other duties and talents) Alle Segretti has been making films for over 20 years, her films winning awards and screening at festivals all over the world.

‘Golden Hour’ is currently running in the Zhiyun Annual Short Video Contest and stars Damien Thomas and Laura Galley as a couple throwing items at the sun, attempting to induce a sunset.

Filmed on a property south of Mackay in August, ‘Golden Hour’ was made for the Sydney Underground Film Festival’s 48hour film competition TAKE48, tasking filmmakers with incorporating a particular object, honey, and a line of dialogue, “This is your last chance,” into their films.

“We’d been having these really amazing sunsets, which were caused by the Tongan

volcano,” said Alle.

“I thought, ‘Sunsets, golden hour, honey, it all makes sense. Why don’t we just have someone throwing something at the sun trying to turn it into a sunset?’”

Shooting wasn’t without drama, with solar mass ejections causing equipment faults.

“At the particular time of day that we were shooting to get the sun at the right angle, we actually had equipment fails,” said Alle.

“The drone went off in its own direction, the camera stopped working, radio mics stopped recording.

“All of this was happening at exactly the same time on both days.”

‘Golden Hour’ has been entered in the Narrative category of the Zhiyun Annual Short Video Contest, with five judges of varying professional backgrounds to announce the winners on November 20.

“If we could get a good range of people watching that film and hitting that like button, then that’s going to influence those

judges to say, ‘Hey, we need to look at this and give it a bit more attention,’” said Alle.

Alle said she often experiences cast and crew shortages when making films in Mackay, with ‘Golden Hour’ stars Damien being a local friend and Laura coming from Rockhampton.

“I am very willing for people to come out and work on what I call ‘gateway projects,’” she said.

“He (Damien) actually says that acting is harder than working in the mines on a 12-hour shift and I had to bring Laura up from Rockhampton because I couldn’t find anyone locally,” she said.

“Over two or three projects, not only do you get a bit of training, but we get to find out where your talent lies and give you access to the equipment and resources necessary to actually make a film.”

Having painted with these artists around Australia for the last 12 years, Mr Short welcomed them, most from Sydney, to the Mackay region last year.

Mr Short said the artists were blown away, walking away with a whole new respect for the area.

“I get to travel all around Australia and I thought I’d bring them to our country up here to give them a taste of our area, a very different landscape to what we’ve painted down south,” Mr Short said.

“You just sit and look and appreciate and study what you’ve got in front of you as a plein air painter.

The group travelled to Seaforth from which they spent four days exploring the islands by boat in resplendent north Queensland sunshine.

“We just travelled around, finding spots and just dropping the guys off to paint

“As artists, we just spend the whole day looking,” he said.

“I think they just thought it was amazing, they’ve absolutely raved over it.”

The result of the trip is ‘A Bit Further North’, on show until mid-November at Milton House Gallery.

The exhibition was officially opened by Member for Whitsunday Amanda Camm and with a live performance by local country music legend Graeme Connors, who was also a part of the travelling group of artists.

“It’s great to have fresh art coming into our area and presenting fresh art to Mackay artists, too, and seeing other people’s takes on our area.”

“The really important part is bringing artists into our area,” Mr Short said.

n a mission of making a difference in the lives of victims of domestic violence and disadvantaged people in our society, Jules Thompson, founder of Broken Ballerina Inc. is partway to putting together her own pieces.

Describing herself as having been that broken ballerina, Jules turned her trauma into triumph, taking hands that once inflicted

damage upon her and turning her own hands into a welcoming refuge for those in our society fleeing domestic violence abuse.

At the Broken Ballerina Ball held last weekend, Jules unveiled her long awaited autobiography with a stunning one-off handmade copy presented to her by her book editor, Miki Ponting-Boyd, which was auctioned for charity.

Thanks to the generosity of the Lamb family, the copy sold for an incredible $3,000, which will help countless people in their time of need.

Jules is hosting her book launch at Mt Pleasant Shopping Centre on the centre stage on November 11 and 12 from 10am until 2pm.

A percentage of sales will be donated back to Broken Ballerina Inc.

circus like no other is coming to Mackay next week bringing sexy circus acts, raunchy dancing and cheeky comedy that will have you crying with laughter.

Infamous combines the energy and excitement of the circus with the intimate and unique setting of a cabaret show.

Performer Bekki Ashton is a sixth-generation circus performer, with her family ties to the circus reaching back to 1850, and has performed in Infamous since it was conceptualised by her brother six years ago.

“We used to have a family-style circus and five or six years ago we thought we’d give this a crack, doing it just for adults, by incorpo-

rating a bar and making the numbers a bit sexier,” she said.

“I call it sophisticated.

“It’s just that little bit teasy, raunchy, that you don’t want the kids to see, and the comedy’s a little bit more adult than the usual.”

In the current iteration of the show, Bekki performs a flying trapeze trick and a duo aerial act alongside her sister, saying aerial tricks are her speciality.

“I’d like to say the flying trapeze, but any aerial act has been my main profession,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter what you do in the circus, everybody chips in and does a little bit of everything.”

The show also incorporates a wheel of death, acrobats, contortionists, art acts, dancers and comedy.

The 18+ event also encompasses delicious treats and snacks, VIP table service and a choice of alcoholic beverages.

“There’s something for everyone and a little bit more for others,” said Bekki.

“There’s not one moment in the program where you’re twiddling your thumbs waiting for something to happen.”

This will be the show’s third visit to Mackay and the last time anyone in Queensland will see this tour and Bekki urges everyone to check it out whether you’ve been before or

not.

“If you have seen the show before, you will notice some new acts and new faces, but all your favourites are still in there,” she said.

“We’re always changing things up so if you’ve seen the show before, don’t be shy to come back.”

mily Boyd is an Australian Great – she has represented Australia for diving at the FINA World Junior Championships, the Senior Titles in Barcelona and Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

She attended the Pioneer Swim Club on Tuesday, 18 October 2022, to speak of her incredible journey as an elite athlete in the sport of diving.

Emily spoke of her battles with her health and injuries, weekly training, nutrition, her goals for the future and how she seeks

to achieve them.

Approximately 40 swimmers met Emily after squad training, posed for photos and had the opportunity to hold her Commonwealth Bronze medal.

Takes Over St Patrick’s College Rugby League Coaching Reins RUGBY LEAGUE

S

t Patrick’s College Mackay have appointed former international centre Ian Schifilliti as coach of its Open boys rugby league team for 2023.

The Ingham native – who joined the St Patrick’s teaching staff at the beginning of this year – was a popular choice to replace departing mentor Michael Comerford, who has taken on a new role as Head Coach of the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Hostplus Cup. Ian, the kid brother of former Illawarra and Parramatta star hooker Dean Schifilliti, guided the Mercy College senior boys rugby league team to the Cowboys Challenge Shield Grand Final this season.

Chasing back to back titles, the Mackay youngsters were left shattered after Kirwan State High snatched the trophy with a try after the full time bell.

Highly regarded during his playing career as a skilful and industrious forward and centre with a strong work ethic, the respected journeyman is an effective communicator and teacher who brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Schifilliti is a legendary figure in the Townsville region where he carved a niche with the Herbert River Crushers club.

He pulled on his first boots at the age of eight and helped the Crushers win Under 11, Under 12, Under 13, Under 14 and Under 16s premierships in the Townsville District Junior League while playing alongside the likes of Canberra flyer Royston Lightning and former Cowboys and Warriors hooker Paul Dezolt.

Schifilliti piloted Herbert River to three Grand Finals and a 2016 premiership and the Northern Open Schoolboys to success before assisting Michael Comerford with the Northern Queensland Marlins representative team.

By the age of 18, Schifilliti was an established Townsville representative forward in the Foley Shield competition and later trialled with Super League club Adelaide Rams and Parramatta after he was spotted by Eels’ talent scout Noel Cleal.

Ian took over the Marlins’ coaching reins from Comerford in 2018 and continued to prepare Gilroy Santa Maria in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools competition before moving to Mackay.

He took up an offer to play in the English Super League with the London Broncos under former Eels premiership-winning coach John Monie and enjoyed stints with the Rochdale Hornets and Keighley Cougars in the United Kingdom before returning to Ingham to complete his teaching degree.

A highlight for Ian was playing three Test matches for Italy at the 2000 Rugby League Emerging Nations Tournament in England which was held alongside the 2000 Rugby League World Cup. Ian teamed up in the centres with Canberra ace Jason Bulgarelli and helped Italy qualify for the 2008 World Cup event with victories over Canada and the United States.

he aim of the Special Olympics is to empower people with intellectual disabilities to discover new strengths, abilities, skills and success through the power of sport.

Special Olympics Mackay Coach and Mentor Kimberly Doyle says the recent Special Olympics National Games in Launceston achieved that aim.

“It was just astonishing to see the impact and the athletes to come away with a greater resilience and greater independence and just a greater feeling of self-worth,” she said.

“They just feel they’ve achieved and just to be there is an achievement.”

All Mackay athletes achieved admirable results, with some finishing the games with gold, silver and bronze medals across both basketball and ten pin bowling.

“They have their own expectations as to how they want to succeed,” said Kimberly.

“We were very happy with their performances.

“They tried their best, that’s all we really focus on, as long as they try their best,

they’re a success.”

There are over 3,000 athletes involved in Special Olympics across the country, with 973 of those competing at the National Games.

“Everyone belonged, everyone felt they were part of something so big,” said Kimberly.

“It’s the greatest inclusive games in the country.

“To have those different abilities, you don’t have to be elite athletes, you just have to do your best.

“The athlete's oath is, ‘Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt,’ and that’s all they have to do.”

Athletes now wait with bated breath to find out if they qualify for the World Games, held in June 2023 in Berlin.

Wests Leagues Club is also hosting a fundraising cent sale for the Special Olympics Mackay this Sunday, November 6 from 11:00am where you will be able to meet the athletes who have returned from Launceston with their medals.

ielding one of its youngest-ever male line ups, Mercy College Mackay has risen to the challenge at the Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournament staged recently on the Gold Coast.

Spearheaded by boom 13-year-olds Treyce Ciantar, Cooper Currie and Usai Bickey, the Mercy hoopers turned in courageous and skillful performances against opponents three years their senior to finish a creditable seventh in the Junior Secondary Boys Division 3 championship.

Under the expert coaching of Rachel McKenzie, the College rookies chalked up

impressive victories in the preliminary rounds to qualify for the finals phase.

It was a meritorious achievement by the fresh-faced hoopers who held their own against some of the finest 16-year-old basketball talent in the State to earn a top eight finish.

On the final day the Mercy colts defeated Redlands College to clinch the play-off for seventh spot.

TRUMP CARD TREYCE A WHIZ ON BASKETBALL COURT AND TOUCH FOOTBALL ARENA BASKETBALL

W

hen he’s not rebounding, playing in the post or setting screens as a power forward on the basketball court you’ll find top schoolboy athlete Treyce Ciantar weaving his magic on a touch football field.

The Mercy College Mackay Year 8 student shows plenty of promise in both sports and impressed keen judges at two of Queensland’s biggest school events recently on the Gold Coast – the Titans All Schools Touch Football Championships and the annual Champions of Secondary Schools Basketball tournament.

Versatile Treyce steered the Mercy/St Patrick’s 13yrs Boys touch football team to the last 16 of the finals series where he showcased his skills as a middle player.

Four days later he was mixing it with the best basketball talent in the State and players two years his senior at the Champions Schools carnival – helping the Mercy/ St Patrick’s Under 15 Boys claim seventh ranking.

Competing against the big guns at the Champion Schools Basketball event was perfect preparation for the upcoming Australian Under 16 Championships to be staged in Melbourne during the New Year.

Treyce will join fellow 13-year-old Mer-

cy College students Cooper Currie and Usai Bickey in the Emerging Queensland Under 15 squad that should benefit from their participation at the national titles.

The talented trio are three of Mackay’s best young basketball prospects and key players in the Meteors’ Junior Development Program.

All three will attend a special State camp in Brisbane next January 17 in preparation for the National Carnival.

Hand-eye coordination is an important skill in Treyce’s make up and has kept him in good stead – ever since he first competed on a basketball court at the age of six.

A product of the South's club in the Mackay Basketball Association, Treyce has blossomed under the tutelage of leading coaches Renee Currie, Chris Breckell and Tony Hutchinson – three local figures who have proved a major influence on his career to date.

Ciantar, a Capricornia schoolboys representative, has served the Mackay Meteors since the age of eight and earlier this year led the club to a North Queensland Under 14 Championship title.

The sky's the limit for this talented young hoop who is destined for bigger things.

Get It Done Training Pioneer Valley Charity Fun Run

T

he date was March 27, 2020.

Kay Nyenuh’s two Muscle Garden gyms in Mackay and Marian were about to be shut down due to COVID restrictions.

He was at his newly opened Marian gym for a lengthy telecommunications appointment when he took his daughter, Rosa, for a walk.

It was then, he came up with an idea to host a charity fun run along the Pioneer River in Marian.

Thought is one thing, but action is another.

However, when Kay has his mind set, there’s no turning back. In the face of adversity and great personal sacrifice through lost income during COVID restrictions, Kay has triumphantly hosted the fun run for the past three years, successfully raising more than $70,000 for the Mackay Hospital Foundation. The third event was held last weekend.

The 2.5km loop course provided the perfect supportive atmosphere for friends and family to cheer on competitors, and the event appeals to all fitness levels, with 1km, 5km, 7.5km and 10km options.

Now with a third gym opened in Andergrove, Kay is optimistic about the future and thanked the support he received to make the fun run a reality.

“Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this event the past three years,” Kay said.

“All the businesses, the participants, my team, I can’t thank you enough.

“In the three years we’ve held this event it’s only gotten bigger and bigger and I can’t wait for next year already!”

This week Kay is flying to New York to fulfill a personal goal, to run the New York Marathon.

ackay City Rollers will play host to the first ever RADfest. A bootcamp and scrimmage weekend for junior roller derby players from Regional Queensland.

RADfest takes its name from Regional Alliance Derby and sees skaters between the ages of 8 and 18 from Rockhampton and Townsville converge on Mackay.

Mackay City Rollers has secured a lineup of experienced coaches from Southeast Queensland including Squeals on Wheels, Rumpofsteelskin, and Vaxter.

After three weeks of hotly contested play and three different winners over the three weeks of play, Ian and Carol Gaskell won the Mackay Novice Pairs.

Squeals on Wheels is a returning Mackay skater who is a two-time silver medalist for Australia playing for Skate Australia Women’s Roller Derby Team at the World Roller Games in China and Spain and Queensland representative in the Australia National Roller Derby Championships; a tournament which Queensland won. Most recently this year, Squeals earned a position on the Skate Australia Women’s Roller Derby Team for the third time and was also successfully appointed as the Coach for the Skate Australia Men’s Roller Derby Team.

Mackay City Rollers President Splitz says, “We are really excited to have such an array of experienced coaches attending this weekend to impart their many years of skating and roller derby knowledge to our juniors.

“Regional events like this are so critical in rebuilding regional roller derby after memberships took a big hit during covid.

“We are trying to breathe life back into derby across the region while building strong connections with our neighbouring leagues in both Junior and Senior derby.

“Roller Derby in regional areas isn’t like other sports where kids compete in a regular weekly competition or season. Our skaters have to travel for opportunities to play competitively or bring skaters here to Mackay.”
