“It’slessons.not so much about sailing,” said Ms Veel. “It’s about the teamwork, the communication, stepping outside where you think your limits are, which are skills that (students) can then take to whatever they’re doing in life. “It’s about changing attitudes internally and also within society’s expectations of what people with disabilities can do.” more

Not all heroes wear capes. Saving a life can be as simple as paying attention while driv Whening. we’re behind the wheel, can easily forget that we’re in control of a machine which can easily kill. This road safety week been reminded of the ‘fatal 5’. there are other things we could be doing while driving to reduce the incidence of accidents and frustration caused to other Learningmotorists.how to properly in dicate on a roundabout would be a good start. There’s an unbelievably high propor tion of motorists who incor rectly indicate right when going straight ahead. Check the Queensland Government transport page which states you only need to indicate left when you’re about to exit a roundabout when driving straight ahead. Of course, even more frustrating are those who don’t bother to in dicate at all when turning. The other simple courtesy is to keep left unless overtak ing. In Queensland, it’s only law if the speed limit is sign posted at 90km/hr or above, or if there is a ‘keep left unless overtaking’ sign. However, in many other countries like the UK, drivers will adhere to this rule in all speed zones. When cars are only using right lanes when they need to, to over take, the traffic flows better. There aren’t those blockages caused by that one person who sits in the right lane shadowing the person in the left lane, seemingly oblivious to the large lines of traffic backing up behind them.

In Hearts Wake are touring Australia to celebrate the release of their documentary Green Is The New Black Byron Bay metalcore act In Hearts Wake kicked off a massive 27-date Australian tour in Western Aus tralia last week and will be making their way to Mackay next Thursday, Septem ber 1. The tour celebrates their new fea ture-length documentary, Green Is The New Black, an examination of the music industry’s relationship to the environment and an account of the making of their 100% carbon offset 2020 album Kaliyuga. We chatted to In Hearts Wake lead singer Jake Taylor ahead of the tour. What was the initial motivation to re cord Kaliyuga in a carbon-neutral man ner and then to document it? We’ve been on this environmental journey for at least the last decade. It’s always been a part of who we are growing up in such a nature-rich place so that’s been instilled in us since our inception. We’re always mak ing steps and we just didn’t quite know to what deep end of the ocean we’d be diving in. It got to that point where doing record signing weeks at that point didn’t make sense so how can we celebrate it? Let’s do these marine debris clean-ups with our fans where we actually pick a spot, have a meet-up and celebrate release day like that. As we were doing that, we were pick ing up pool toys and discarded t-shirts in waterways and things like that. And then you get back on stage later that week where we’ve got the pool toys and we’re selling the t-shirts and it was that next step to go ‘wow, we have to look at what we produce and what we create on a whole new level,’ and once you go down that rabbit hole… the next big necessary dive into the ocean was to look at how to reduce emissions and offset an album. So, here we are today, and I realised there’s no point doing this if you’re not able to share your challenges and triumphs along the way because that ripple effect is far greater than just doing it yourself and keeping it hidden or a secret. I think we often keep things hidden or a secret be cause we’re afraid of getting it wrong. So, this journey is our journey, what we got wrong and potentially what we got right. We’re really opening ourselves up to be that case study. Do you have any examples of what you did learn throughout the process? Yeah, well, the film really dives into every thing thoroughly and to give you a blan ket few points, it was merchandising, what can we switch to to get off regular cotton and polyester, making those eco choices; it was stage production, getting rid of pool toys and CO2, looking at alternatives that benefit our show and minimise our im pact on the environment; then there was renewable solutions to touring itself, like reducing emissions; and how to produce a record that isn’t on something that’s super harmful to the environment, something that is eco-friendly, recycled, those sorts of avenues. It’s looking at these solutions ho listically to realise there’s no one single one but there are many. To really dive into it is to watch the film but those are the areas we looked into. What do you have planned for the tour? We’re putting on the biggest and best show that we can in this new way, with all the new ways we’ve learnt with this doco. That’s the cool thing, testing out these new ways. How important is it for you guys to visit the regions like Mackay and do you no tice any difference in the crowds and the vibes compared to metro places? Yeah, I do notice. To me, it’s more import ant. We enjoy it more than metro places because, not only is there easy parking, better hospitality, but there’s a realness… it feels more like a real, more pure taste of a place, and in that the people aren’t spoilt for like, ‘which show do I go to this week?’ but rather like, ‘wow, there’s a show here and I’m grateful that you came.’ So, people are much more present and that equals a higher vibe and people are really in the joy, they tend to be more joyous… In north Queensland, there’s a rowdiness in a good way… Truly, out of all the states, north Queensland is the state we often look forward to for some of the craziest shows. There’s like a party, tropical vibe, too. There’s a loose, joyousness that hap pens up there.
Valley Spinners and Crafts president, Mar garet Borg said, “Many of our members learnt to knit or crochet as children under the helpful eye of their mothers, grand mothers or aunts but this is not so com mon “There’stoday.a wealth of crafting knowledge amongst our members and we are very excited to share this with younger ones in our community. We hope that these work shops might begin a lifelong love of craft for some of them.”

But consumer law has changed and most of the bad practices have been stamped out. However, you can’t stamp out all bad behaviour. There are people in all walks of life who are dis honest, manipulative and selfish and you are certainly going to find them in real estate. I couldn’t count the number of times someone has said they don’t trust a particular agent and would never use them to buy or sell a property. Sometimes, when you hear the story, the person’s opinion is ab solutely justified and it is hard to believe the particular agent can look at themselves in the mirror on a daily basis. On other occasions, it is the circumstances that have been difficult and although the agent might not have handled it per fectly, he or she did not do any thing wrong. The situation with multiple of fers on a property is a good ex Theample.real estate agent is legally and ethically required to give all relevant information to a seller. When a buyer makes an offer the agent must pass that on to the seller. Let’s say that later that day, while the seller is consid ering the offer, another buyer makes an offer. The agent must pass that offer on to the seller. We are then in a multiple offer situation and there are some le gal steps the agent must take. He or she needs to tell both buy ers that there are multiple offers and suggest that they make their best and final offers. The agent is not allowed to reveal one buyer’s offer to the Sometimes, other.Buyer 1 is annoyed because they had “made a good offer earlier in the day and now you’re talking about another of fer that’s suddenly come along”. The truth is the agent works for the seller. Yes, as an agent I want to help buyers and do every thing I can to help them in their property goals. But the listing agent must act ethically and within the law to get the best possible price for the seller. If another offer comes in while the seller is considering your offer then that is the way it is and the agent has no choice but to make sure the seller has that information. I always say to buyers in this po sition: “Imagine if you were the seller and I didn’t tell you about an offer that came in while you were considering an initial of Likefer.” any other industry, there are dodgy people and good peo ple in real estate. Most of the agents I know are decent folk who like to help people. There are a few who are not. Their names are … Idon’t know about you, but my heart is so heavy lately. It feels like every time I check my newsfeed or turn on the telly, I hear about a death or tragic news for an entertainment and sports person that I’ve grown up watch ing. week it made news that the female vocalist behind the Auss ie classic song ‘The Horses’, New Zealand singer Margaret Urlich passed away on Monday and on Tuesday morning we got news that Aussie legend John Farnham was admitted to hospital for treatment of his own a cancer diagnosis. It comes after losing a number of notable Australians in the domes tic entertainment and sporting in dustries, which is a scary thought. We all had high hopes that 2022 would be a better year. I had a friend ask me recently “why do you feel sad about people you don’t know?”. It took me back for a moment be cause I wasn’t exactly sure how to articulate it, but then it was clear, while you and I don’t know these people directly, they have had so much influence over our lives. We’ve grown up loving what these people bring into our lives, we fol low their lives so it’s an investment that we’ve put in. Losing them is losing part of our own interests and history as well. Vale Margaret Urlich and thoughts and prayers to John Farnham in this difficult time. It reminds me to not take for granted the time I have with those I love, while it’s still here. I know I’ll be hugging my grand ma extra tight the next time I see her. And I really hope you do the same. Kaley

What is sad is that Slade Point, only 10 minutes from the CBD, also has poor in ternet and mobile reception, yet there are at least four towers in close proximity. We have to remember that the internet/NBN is one problem and mobile phones are an other problem. We need to start having conversations with the powers that be to enlighten them to this issue. One option for a better mobile service and making your calls is using WIFI calling that seems to be a bit more reliable. I also heard a great story from a resident recent ly that he changed mobile phone providers and his connectivity is so much better. Armstrong Beach is at the other end of our region and also has limited internet access. But I did find out that Sky Muster is avail able to those in that area to assist them get better coverage and can be purchased from several providers. Just go check out NBN “check your address” to see what is Ifavailable.youneed a bit of help, then why not con tact Regional Tech Hub (regionaltechhub. org.au), which is government funded, and they can do a report specific to your needs.
Better Internet for Rural Regional Remote Australia (birrraus.com) also has provider recommendations that can help you make comparisons and this takes the work out of shopping around. They also have a Face book page you can get heaps of info from. I believe good phone and internet service should be accessible to all in our region, regardless of where you live. Let me know if you need any assistance.
In the 21st century one would expect that no home would be without a good internet and mobile service. But that is not the case. The community in the up per Pioneer Valley has had poor, and in some cases no, service. This, I believe, is unacceptable in 2022, so the community decided to do something about it. After much collaboration with the peo ple in the know, it was suggested we do a community survey in Finch Hatton and Eungella, which produced the evidence needed to prove the substandard telecom munications in that area. After attending a regional infrastructure telecommunications review, the upper val ley will now receive infrastructure to the value of $5.4m in upgrades to install fixed wireless over the next few years.

In terms of professions the public loves to hate, car salesmen, journalists and real estate agents are usually named at the top of the list. I’ve notched up two out of three on that list but, having never been a car salesman, I miss the trifecta. Feelin’ pretty superior right now.

Promising St Patrick’s forward Levi Love turned in a strong performance in his side’s 24-12 loss to Ignatius Park in the Aaron Payne Cup Grand Final Dynamic utility Bray Tait shone for St Patrick’s in the Aaron Payne Cup decider against Ignatius Park in Townsville
Newly appointed Mackay Cut ters Head Coach Michael Comerford has just experi enced a week of mixed fortunes in the world of rugby league. Only days after agreeing to take over the reins from departing Cutters’ Head Coach Dave Elliott for the next two seasons, the widely respected Comerford has missed out on a fairy tale Aaron Payne Cup premiership with his much-vaunted St Patrick’s College Mackay team. Comerford will step down from his Sports Coordinator role at Mercy College on October 4 to take up the full time Head Coaching position at his beloved Cutters. With Elliott accepting the Head Coach role at Norths Devils for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the astute Comerford was aiming to finish his schoolboy coaching commitments on a winning note. But hats off to Ignatius Park College who have added the Aaron Payne Cup to their trophy cabinet after reg istering a 24-12 Grand Final victo ry over St Patrick’s last Friday at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville. In yet another torrid clash between the northern Queensland schoolboy titans, Ignatius Park have claimed the honours after stepping up with two late tries in an enterprising finish. Turning point came with Ignatius Park leading 18-12 inside the final ten minutes when boom St Patrick’s cen tre Kai Simon appeared to be taken off the ball when charging for the try line to pounce on a perfectly weighted Ethan Van Kerkwyk grubber kick. No action was taken and Ignatius Park re sponded with a sweeping 70 metre move ment downfield that led to a crucial four pointer as the home side seized the advan Spearheadedtage. by top prospect Jack Wood, the Townsville youngsters jumped to an early 12-0 lead before the elusive Simon nabbed a converted try for St Patrick’s be fore the break. When St Patrick’s centre Bray Tait crossed for his side’s second try after the interval to level up proceedings the scene was set for a gripping finale. Having also lifted the 2022 Confraternity Shield, Ignatius Park have now set their sights on beating Dolphins Cup winners St Brendan’s Yeppoon in this week’s show down at the Mackay Junior League Fields. St Brendan’s toppled The Cathedral Col lege 20-6 in last week’s final to set up another tilt with Ignatius Park with the winner to meet either Ipswich State High School or reigning champions Palm Beach-Currumbin State High in the NRL Schoolboys Phil Hall Cup Grand Final at Robina’s Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast.
