she found a way into many hearts, whether through her unwavering dedication to duty, her bravery as a teenag er during World War II, or her candid love of photography. As we saw recently in her famous Paddington Bear encounter, or her role in the 2012 London Olympics where James Bond escorted Her Majesty to the Opening Ceremony, she had quite the sense of humour.
One thing is for certain, a reign like hers could never be repeated.

History may record that, during a time of secularisation, of retreat of the voice of the Church from the public sphere, it was a woman and a lay person, who personally studied the Bible, attended church regularly, and sought to express faith in action in daily life, who served the world as one of the greatest evangelists of the C20th and C21st centuries.
In her first Christmas broadcast in 1952 she called for prayer for wisdom and strength, and her Christmas message for 2008 in cluded the reflection: ‘I hope that, like me, you will be comforted by the example of Jesus of Nazareth who, often in circumstances of great adversity, managed to live an outgoing, unselfish and sacri ficial life…He makes it clear that genuine human happiness and satisfaction lie more in giving than receiving; more in serving than in being served.’

more than 100 different types of arthritis, but all are painful and can lead to joint deformity and a loss of function if not managed.
Top Tip – Try Yoga

We were always taught in school PE to warm up and cool down before and after exercise but it is easy to fall into the habit of skipping these routines. Going through a complete warm up and cool down is a simple way for athletes to maximize their athletic performance and reduce the likelihood of injury and soreness. Pre and post workout exercises play a crucial role in preparing the body for activity and assisting in full recovery.
Before exercising, do about five to 10 minutes of light aerobic exercise to loosen up your muscles. This could include walking briskly, marching, jogging slowly, or cycling on a stationary bike. Make sure you don’t rush your warmup. Dynamic stretches like walking lunges, jumping jacks or opposite toe touches are good ways to stretch the muscles as well.
Top Tip – Try Strength Training

These exercises help you build strong muscles that help support and protect your joints. Rest a day between your workouts, and take an extra day or two if your joints are painful or swollen.
Walking, gardening – even scrubbing floors – count. But the greatest results come with a consistent and progressive exercise program adjusted for your age, fitness level and the activities you enjoy most.
Exercise is crucial for people with painful joint conditions. It increases strength and flexibility and it can reduce pain.
To avoid injury, go slow until you know how your body reacts to a new activity and don’t repeat the same exercise every day.
No matter what type of exercise you choose, listen to your body. If you have pain after a workout that persists more than an hour or two, do less next time and take more breaks.
Top Tip – Try Pilates

Warming up is the process of increasing blood flow to the muscles that are to be engaged in the planned exercise. Heightened blood flow to muscles means an increase in oxygen delivery to tissues and the removal of carbon dioxide, a harmful toxin for muscle performance.

will usually include gentler cardiovascular exercises and stretching movements, which will help the body dispose of any harmful toxins that can cause muscle aches and stiffness. The main goal of a cool down is to slowly decrease the body temperature, lower an athlete’s heart rate and reduce injury. If athletes choose not to participate in a cool down, they are more susceptible to blood build up in their veins and soreness the next day. A light jog or walk is a simple way to wind down the body after exercising, but stretching can address the particular muscles you want to cool down. Stretches such as upper body stretching, seated forward bend hamstring stretch, standing quad stretch and lunging calf stretch can help you avoid the dreaded soreness the next day.

Walkerston Student Wins Public Speaking Competition
6 Walkerston State School stu dents were drawn to the magnetic attraction of one of Queensland’s best island vacation spots for their school camp earlier this month.

The competition was initiated by the Ro tary Club of Walkerston in 2007 and re mains a hotly contested event.

Speaking in public is something many of us fear, but Miley Weller from Walkerston State School is showing there’s nothing to be scared about.

The next time you’re passing through Walkerston, stop at the Siding Café and see what all the fuss is about. Sip on great Merlo coffee, treat yourself to something sweet or savour a big sandwich for later. If you have time to dine in, try a delicious Andburger.atip from the Editor, grab the banana bread. You’ll go bananas for it.
The Crawford family purchased the café just over 6 months ago. It’s been a favourite in Walkerston for about 7 years. The fam ily grew up within the region and decid ed to move to Walkerston with their two young children, aged 4 and 2.
“It’s one of the items we changed when we bought the business. It’s jam-packed full of wholesome goodness, but don’t take our word for it, come and try it yourself!”

“With some of them being from the SouthEast, the connections they form with us is knowing they will see a smiling face and enjoy some good banter through conver sation. Being away from their families for two weeks at a time, sometimes they need that feeling of familiarity to feel more at home,” Sharna said.
In the café you’ll find this local business supporting other local businesses, with a selection of homemade sauces and pre serves, peanut butter, jerky, almond bread and even sets of handmade earrings for sale from small business throughout the Plattersregion. can be made featuring the famous sandwiches as well as assorted sweets. They are popular for business morning tea and lunch shouts.
“The idea behind owning a café was to be able to make a difference to somebody’s day,” Sharna said.

The regulars who frequent The Siding agree that a drawcard is the daily freshly made sandwiches with the dedicated crew up at 3:30am to ensure fresh fare is avail able from 4:30am when they open.
“Our regulars love that they can grab-andgo when they need to, other times they’ll stay and enjoy a chat.”

It’s not just the fact that the sandwiches are made daily, but also that the filling is

plentiful. The thick sangas feature favour ite fillings like home-cooked corned beef, chicken and salad, egg and lettuce, ham and other Passers-byspecialties.lovetheconvenience of grab bing fresh food on the go to enjoy on the road or to have for a hearty lunch later. Most regulars are known by name by the Siding girls.
“It’s like creating an extended family, it’s not just about knowing their coffee order, in many cases we’ve watched their young family grow, consoled them during a time of grief or chatted about daily life.”

“For some, their daily cup of coffee is more than the beverage itself. For some, it’s their chance to get out of the house, an opportu nity for a conversation or connection with another person or simply a break from the daily grind.”
“That’s always been a point of difference with our café, we get to know our regulars and know most of them by name.
“Where happiness is homemade and coffee is always a good idea.”
Sharna says that the food can be summed up as hearty and humble.
The early open time coincides with the civil construction crews and Bowen Ba sin miners who are passing through on their way to shifts. The breakfast wrap is a crowd favourite and Sharna says it’s the café’s most popular item.
Along Walkerston’s rustic main street is the Siding Café, where owner Sharna Crawford and her team Brooke, Sue and Mel, bring joy to locals and pass ers-by through coffee and conversation.
