BY RUTH PUDDEFOOT
On the rooftop of a house their grandfather built with his own hands, CEO’s James and Adam Gilmour once traced constellations across the vast Queensland night sky. “Our grandfather… he was really heavy in photography and astrology. I remember him taking me up to the top of the house… to show me constellations that I still recall. And I’ll pass it down now to my daughter,” James recalls.
That childhood fascination, sparked by stargazing with their grandad, a love of science fiction, and a well-worn copy of The Young Scientist Book of Space Flight, became the compass that guided the brothers far beyond backyard dreams, fueling a passion that would take them far from home.
In 2012, they left the familiar behind, quitting their jobs to devote themselves entirely to rockets and satellites. What began as a daring idea quickly gained momentum, and within a decade, Gilmour Space Technologies had grown from an audacious start-up into a pioneering force, pushing the boundaries of Australian spaceflight.
“They could have said, not in our backyard, but they embraced it… the support over the years from Bowen has just been amazing,” James said. “It is with great pride and satisfaction to realise that within that short time we’re now Australia’s largest space technology employer, devoted solely to building rockets and satellites,” he enthused.
Forging a business with family can be a delicate enterprise, but for the Gilmour brothers, it became a crucible of trust and collaboration.
James looks up to Adam as a “role model,” as they navigate the unknown together and stated that it’s great that they have each other.
“We try to profit that the best idea wins… we’ve fought many battles together,” James explained.
Only four years after Gilmour was founded in 2016, the team successfully launched their first rocket. Soon after, they embarked on another major programme, SR0, which unfortunately failed. James explained that the experience proved to be a valuable lesson for the team.
Echoing the words of J.F. Kennedy, he reflected:
“We do this not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.”
“We’re just getting started, and you know, some of our biggest challenges lay ahead.”
The brothers returned to Bowen with renewed determination, aiming to launch Australia’s first sovereign orbital rocket. Their journey was far from smooth, with regulatory hurdles and technical delays testing the team at every turn. When launch day finally arrived, the rocket soared into the sky, executed precise pad manoeuvres and validated critical systems. Yet an unexpected
anomaly prevented a complete mission success. Still, the attempt was far from a failure.
“We did have an anomaly which led to a failure, but we had little or no damage… we’ll be getting a lot of data from this that goes into improving the reliability of future vehicles,” James explained.
Even in the face of setbacks, optimism remains a constant companion. The data collected promises to shape the next generation of rockets, bringing Australia closer to its historic goal of joining the ranks of nations capable of independent orbital flight.
Undeterred, the team is already planning the next chapter. They are investigating the anomaly, preparing for their upcoming suborbital campaign, Tyron, later this year, and raising crucial funds to secure the long-term survival and growth of a homegrown Australian space program. In James’ words:
“Our next steps are to be just generally awesome.”
“I want to get to space. And it’d be nice to have our own right to get to space.”
Behind the ambition is a team of engineers guided by safety, innovation, courage, and perseverance, supporting every decision. James takes pride in watching his young engineers grow into leaders who are shaping the future of Australian aerospace.
Building rockets in Australia presents unique challenges.
James noted that the regulatory landscape has never been thoroughly tested, spanning both federal and state jurisdictions, and the public’s understanding of these missions is limited. Educating the community about the significance and potential of their work is just as important as perfecting the engineering. It is a delicate balance of technical mastery and outreach; one that the team embraces with passion and resolve.
“We’ve tackled problems that my other countrymen probably deem impossible, and now we’re starting to bear some fruit from all our hard work.”
Looking at the bigger picture, the brothers hope their work will ignite national pride in Australia much like Apollo did for the United States and inspire the next generation of Australians to set their sights higher. A hope that was reinforced after a recent visit to a local school. As James shares, “All it needs is for one of those little kids to get inspired by what we do.”
James says he sees their efforts as redefining Australia’s role in space, showing that ambitious, privately led projects can achieve feats once thought possible only for governments or major powers.
“We have demonstrated that it is possible for a private entrepreneurial team that is well led to do things previously only thought possible by government or major powers… Watch this space. Pun intended.”
When North Queensland NRL legend Johnathan Thurston (JT) hung up his boots in 2018, many wondered what his next venture would be. But JT had been working on something for years — the Johnathan Thurston Academy.
The Academy was born in the lead-up to the NRL’s first Indigenous vs NRL All Stars Match. During preparations, JT realised he didn’t know much about his family history, which inspired him to learn. After a weekend visit to Mitchell, Gunggari Country, he began to think about life after rugby league. Considering his options, JT became an ambassador for different programs with the North Queensland Cowboys.
“I got a real big kick out of seeing the success stories of kids who were completing school, improving their grades, and improving their attendance,” JT said.
“So, I thought I could go out on my own and do it.”
The Johnathan Thurston Academy is based on three characteristics: confidence, courage, and self-belief, traits JT knew he had to display to further his own education. The Academy works with young people, many from disadvantaged or disengaged backgrounds, helping them discover who they are, what they stand for, and where they can go with the right guidance.
Programs focus on values, goal-setting, and role models, and include initiatives such as JTLeadLikeAGirl (women’s empowerment), JTBelieve (school attendance), JTSucceed (employment), and JTYouGotThis (early intervention). Drawing on the teamwork lessons of rugby league, the Academy relies on trusted staff who build rapport with youth and their families, leading to positive behavioural changes
and meaningful opportunities.
But trust isn’t built overnight. JT emphasises that his staff go the extra mile.
“Our staff, first and foremost, go out to families, and we take care packages out to those families.
“We engage with the guardians, grandparents, mum and dad, aunties and uncles, whoever is caring for them, and that happens about a month before the program starts.
“Then we have weekly touch points with the guardians leading into the start of the program.
“We have a month of built trust and that rapport before the program starts.”
Above all, JT says the reason he loves to see disengaged and disadvantaged youth succeed is because he was the same.
“I was one of these kids.
“I was disengaged from school and going down the wrong path,” JT said.
“I always loved rugby league, but I started to fall out of love with the game, and I was a little bit lost.
“But I had a great family support network around me to help me get back on track.
“I know the history of our nation and what our culture has endured. A lot of the kids that we work with are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander kids, and I’ve been in their shoes.
“I want the Academy to be that support network, and I want the Academy to open doors for them.”
JT and the Johnathan Thurston Academy’s message is clear: no one is more responsible for
dreams than yourself — you are the difference.
“The Academy is there to support and guide these young people, but I always say to them, you be the difference in achieving your dreams.
“You’re gonna get knocked down sometimes, but it’s about getting back up and still having those blinkers on and achieving the goals that you set.
“Put the blinkers on, and with a little bit of guidance, sacrifice, dedication, and work ethic, you can achieve your dreams.”

Close your eyes and picture it: fairy lights flickering like fireflies through the forest canopy, music drifting on the night air, champagne glasses catching the glow of lanterns as laughter carries across the hillside. This October, that vision comes to life when Life Publishing Group presents The Enchanted Garden — the very first of what is set to become the Whitsundays’ most coveted annual event.
On Saturday 25 October 2025, the gates of Elementa will open to reveal an evening of magic and meaning, staged high above the Whitsundays with views that seem to spill into infinity. Already embraced by the community, with sponsorships snapped up and only fewer than 30 tickets remaining, the event is primed to sell out. Those who secure their place will be part of something unforgettable — a night destined to become a story retold long after the last glass is poured.
A Night to Wander and Wonder
This is no traditional gala. Forget alternate drops and polite dinner table small talk. Instead, imagine a garden of endless discovery: gourmet tapas flowing all evening, paired with a fivehour premium beverage package, designed for mingling and meandering. Guests will move freely, weaving through exquisitely styled spaces, pausing at insta-worthy installations where cameras flash and conversations bloom. A professional photographer and videographer will be there to capture every moment of glamour — so you can simply live it.
And the entertainment? A top-tier live band, Mo’ Swagger, to keep the tempo high, surprise moments woven through the evening, and an art performance like nothing this region has ever seen.
Matteo Charles: Art in Motion
The headline act, Matteo Charles, is a global phenomenon — a painter who doesn’t just create art, but conjures theatre on canvas. Known for his explosive live portraits of celebrities and world leaders, Charles has performed everywhere from the Monaco F1 to Hong Kong’s celebration of Bruce Lee’s 75th birthday. Now, for the very first time, he will bring his “Inspirational Artistry” to the Whitsundays, painting live under the stars at Elementa.
Each brushstroke is unpredictable, each performance unique.
“You never quite know what will happen,” Matteo says. “You might just have to purchase a ticket and come see for yourself.”
As if one masterpiece weren’t enough, Charles will also debut a brand-new digital artwork, created exclusively for The Enchanted Garden, with limited-edition prints available on the night. Rare,
radiant, and destined to become collector’s pieces, they are as exclusive as the event itself.
Glamour Meets Giving
Beneath the sparkle, this is a night with real heart. Every ticket purchased supports seven extraordinary charities: the Trudy Crowley Foundation, Mackay Hospital Foundation, Orange Sky, Bowen and Collinsville Pet Rescue, Mackay Pet Rescue, Fauna Rescue Whitsundays, and the Townsville Spinal Unit — organisations caring for people, animals and communities when they need it most.
For those who want to add an extra dash of delight, Enchanted Keys will be available to purchase. Each key unlocks a prize — all guaranteed to be worth more than the cost of the key itself. It’s part treasure hunt, part indulgence, and fully irresistible.
Be Transported
The evening begins the moment you step onto your return bus transfer — included with every ticket — so the journey itself feels seamless. From there, it’s an immersion: into music, magic, and the company of the region’s most stylish crowd.
Life Publishing Group has poured creativity and care into every detail. From the exquisite decorations designed to surprise and delight at every turn, to the flawless curation of food, drink and entertainment, The Enchanted Garden isn’t just another night out. It’s an escape. An immersion. A new tradition in the making.
The Countdown is On
With fewer than 30 tickets left, anticipation is reaching its peak. This is your chance to be among the first to step into The Enchanted Garden and claim your place in a story that will unfold again and again in years to come. Because while the decorations will change, the spirit of enchantment will remain.
Secure your ticket now. Because once the garden gate closes, it won’t open again until next year.

In a region defined by grit, ingenuity and a relentless drive to evolve, the Resource Industry Network (RIN) has once again shone a spotlight on the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday METS and resources sector, one of the most sophisticated and influential hubs in the nation.
The 2025 RIN Awards Gala Dinner, held on Friday 22 August at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC), brought together industry leaders, innovators, and changemakers for a night that celebrated resilience, creativity, and connection. MCed by comedian and television personality Ed Kavalee, and energised by live music from the Luke Miller Band, the black-tie evening was much more than an awards night — it was a true celebration of the people and businesses driving the region forward.
RIN General Manager Dean Kirkwood praised the calibre of this year’s finalists, highlighting the challenges the sector has faced.
“Global uncertainty, economic pressures and shifting markets have tested even the most established operators. But in true Greater Mackay Region fashion, our METS and mining sectors haven’t backed down. Instead, they have adapted, grown, and doubled down on innovation and community impact.
“The finalists selected are proof that our region doesn’t just survive challenges, it transforms them into momentum.”
RIN Chair, Tim Magoffin, reflected on the resilience and innovation of the sector.
“Every year, the awards showcase the incredible talent and commitment within our region. Of course, this year has brought challenges, from cost-of-living pressures to global tariffs, but what remains constant is the creativity, capability, and enthusiasm of our businesses.
“These awards are a fantastic way to shine a bright light on the hard work being done and the positive impact our companies have across diverse sectors.”
Mr Magoffin highlighted the diversity and opportunities within the industry, noting that businesses in Mackay contribute not only to the local economy but to Queensland and Australia as a whole.
“From mining equipment, technology and services, to sugar, maritime, gas, and renewables, our region continues to demonstrate adaptability and leadership. We celebrate those achievements, honouring both longstanding contributions and the innovation shaping our future.”
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson also congratulated finalists and winners.
“With more than 11,000 businesses in Mackay’s footprint, many connected to the resources sector, the work being recognised tonight underpins a significant portion of our regional GDP.
“It’s inspiring to see local companies leading the way in innovation, safety, and community engagement, and I want to thank all entrants for the contribution they make to our city, to Queensland, and to Australia.”
The awards spanned seven categories, reflecting excellence across safety, culture, community, market expansion, manufacturing, innovation, and inclusion.
M&P Services has taken home the Manufacturing Excellence Award, sponsored by Queensland Manufacturing Hubs, at the 2025 RIN Awards Gala Dinner — cementing its reputation as one of the region’s leading manufacturing innovators. The award recognises the company’s outstanding achievements in delivering high-quality, fitfor-purpose solutions, built on decades of experience and a relentless commitment to customer trust.
From its early days in panel beating and mechanical repairs, M&P Services has transformed into a national powerhouse in transportable building manufacturing. Under the leadership of Director Max Lamb Jr, the company has refined every aspect of its operations — from in-house fabrication techniques to supply chain resilience — ensuring growth, stability, and a product that stands out across Australia and overseas.
RIN Award Judges praised M&P Services for its strong customer relationships, innovative manufacturing techniques, and remarkable growth.
“Tonight’s winner has focused on manufacturing excellence and a strong relationship with customers to design, develop and produce fit-for-
purpose solutions,” the judging panel noted.
“The organisation has seen a transformation over the past decade in how it has refocused assets, capital and focus to the manufacturing operations of the business and this has resulted in remarkable growth.
“The organisation embraced the learnings from COVID, implementing supply chain contingencies and focusing on efficiency and waste minimisation.”
For Director Max Lamb Jr, the recognition is both a professional milestone and a personal tribute to his family’s legacy. Founded by his father, Max Lamb Sr, M&P Services began as a panel beating and mechanical repairs business before expanding into transport, fabrication and, ultimately, full-scale manufacturing.
Fifteen years ago, the company entered the manufacturing sector, and in 2020, during the upheaval of COVID, it sold off its transport division to focus solely on quality transportable buildings. The decision proved transformative.
“Through confidence in our product, we’ve grown from strength to strength,” Max Jr said.
“The uniqueness and quality of what we manufacture has placed us among the top in our
field, and this award solidifies that.”
M&P Services now undertakes all fabrication in-house, developing proprietary techniques that have kept costs stable despite global pressures. By shifting away from transport, the company created space for increased stock holdings, keeping them three months ahead in production — a buffer against global supply chain disruptions.
For Max Jr, the award is about more than business success.
“This is something I’m proud to share with my father,” he said.
“Without his vision and hard work, M&P Services wouldn’t exist. It’s a testament to his legacy, and to our ability to adapt and continue the strength of the M&P name.”
He also credited his workforce for the achievement, describing them as central to the company’s progress.
“Our team is at the heart of everything we do. We’ve built an environment where ideas and improvements are encouraged — whether in manufacturing processes or safety — and that culture has driven our success.”

FMS Group has marked a milestone year by taking home the coveted Safety Foremost Award at the 2025 Resource Industry Network (RIN) Awards, underlining its commitment to workplace safety and industry leadership. This win is the third RIN accolade for the company, following previous victories in the ‘Connecting in the Community’ and ‘Champion Culture’ categories.
“This is certainly the cherry on top of a milestone year for FMS Group, as we celebrate 20 years of business,” a representative said.
Founded in 2005 in Central Queensland as CQ Field Mining Services, FMS Group has grown to become a provider of choice for major clients across the Bowen Basin. The company now operates six specialist divisions, delivering trades and maintenance solutions across diesel, field services, projects, workshops, electrical, and onsite machining.
By 2013, FMS expanded internationally with PNGFMS in Papua New Guinea, specialising in diesel hydraulic excavator and shovel repairs, employing highly skilled tradespeople to provide quality maintenance and breakdown services across multiple mine sites.
In 2017, the Western Australia division began operations and quickly expanded across the Goldfields, Southwest, and Pilbara regions. FMS now services mining, oil and gas, marine,
construction, and renewables sectors, supported by an inhouse Infrastructure, Maintenance and Projects (IMP) Division.
Growth continued with the introduction of Safety Lift Solutions (SLS) and an engineering department in 2020, followed by the opening of a state-of-the-art workshop in Mackay in 2022, boosting turnkey shutdown capabilities. The company rebranded to FMS Group in 2023, consolidating CQ Field, WA Field, and PNG Field under one banner, and launched its products division, partnering with Ground Force and TowHaul.
This year, FMS Group has further expanded with a Brisbane corporate office in Fortitude Valley and launched HAWC, reflecting its commitment to innovation alongside its extensive industry legacy.
Judges at the 2025 RIN Awards praised FMS Group’s leadership in safety.
“Fatigue is an insidious risk for our industry and our winner, FMS Group, is making real change to address this risk.
“They are looking at change for the industry, not
just the operations within their business. The initiative is beyond the business; it is an industrywide initiative looking at risks across the sector.
“The results speak for themselves with impressive compliance statistics and more importantly, a workforce that has consistent shifts and well-planned, safe rostering.”
With three RIN Awards under its belt and 20 years of industry excellence, FMS Group continues to set the standard in safety, innovation, and trusted service across various mining and industrial sectors in the region.

When it comes to safeguarding the resource industry, Diacon Australia stands firmly in the front row. As the sponsor of the Safety Foremost Award at this year’s Resource Industry Network (RIN) Awards, the company’s role was more than symbolic – it reflected its own ethos, where protection and innovation walk hand in hand.
For more than 20 years, Diacon has been delivering bespoke conveyor guarding systems that combine lightweight, corrosion-free materials with seamless integration. Unlike traditional steel guards, their designs are engineered to endure Australia’s harshest conditions without the need for ongoing painting or costly maintenance. This approach not only reduces risks on site, but also saves operators significant expense, with clients seeing up to 30 per cent cost savings when Diacon is engaged early in the conveyor design process.
Managing Director Brendan Refalo explains that Diacon’s three-part guarding system was developed in direct response to industry demand for something beyond the limitations of steel. The result is a guard that resists corrosion, eliminates surface treatments, and incorporates a patented hungry board design that reduces material spillage and prevents dangerous buildups on walkways. Each installation is tailored to its environment, with existing structures laser-scanned to create precise 3D models. This level of accuracy ensures every guard is manufactured to fit seamlessly, maintaining both safety standards and operational efficiency. Diacon’s expertise extends across the full lifecycle of conveyors, from new installations to retrofits of ageing assets. Their solutions are designed to integrate with existing infrastructure, reducing downtime and improving safety outcomes without unnecessary disruption.
Innovation also continues to shape the company’s future. In line with global sustainability goals, Diacon has recently introduced a fully recycled guard – a breakthrough product that enables redundant guards to be collected and reprocessed into new ones, without sacrificing quality or strength. This closed-loop system is helping clients meet their environmental targets while extending the life of critical infrastructure.

The 2025 Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor’s Charity Ball was a spectacular evening of elegance, entertainment and community spirit, held at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre on Saturday, 26 July.
With a masquerade theme, guests enjoyed a sparkling welcome drink, gourmet three-course dinner, open bar, live music and dazzling performances, all capped off with a breathtaking fireworks finale.
But beyond the glamour, the night was about making a difference – and together, the Whitsunday community raised an incredible $90,000.
This year, 50% of proceeds supported BMA CQ Rescue, the 24/7 lifesaving emergency helicopter service. The remaining funds were shared between two organisations at the heart of our region – Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre and Bowen Community Centre, which provide crisis support, financial counselling, emergency relief and essential community programs.
Mayor Ry Collins said the event reflected the strength and generosity of the Whitsunday community.
“These charities are a powerful example of compassion and resilience in our region. By coming together for the Charity Ball, we’ve supported the people and services that are there for our community when it matters most,” Mayor Collins said.
A huge thank you goes to our generous sponsors, with special recognition to our Event Partners Lowcock Builders and Airlie Beach Hotel, whose support made the evening possible.
Mark your calendars, the date is already locked in for next year: Saturday, 25 July 2026.
Join us once again for another magical night of glamour, generosity and community spirit in the Whitsundays.

In the competitive world of commercial and industrial construction, businesses demand more than just a builder – they need a partner who understands their vision, overcomes obstacles, and delivers results that endure.
That’s exactly what CiteCon Pty Ltd brings to the table.
As recognised project specialists, CiteCon has built a reputation for getting the job done – and done well. With proven expertise across design and construction, the company delivers modern, adaptable facilities tailored to the unique needs of each client. From large-scale industrial workshops to integrated office spaces, CiteCon combines technical skill, innovative solutions, and a determined, hands-on approach that consistently exceeds expectations. That reputation was reinforced at the 2025 Mackay & Whitsunday Master Builders Awards, where CiteCon secured two prestigious titles: Commercial / Industrial
Building from $5 million up to $15 million for the MI Scaffold Industrial Warehouse in Paget, and Commercial Refurbishment / Renovation up to $5 million for Penske Australia, also in Paget.
The MI Scaffold project in particular showcased CiteCon’s ability to thrive under pressure. Facing regional labour shortages, more than 40 days of wet weather, and even a site burglary, the team still delivered the multi-milliondollar facility on time and within budget. By taking specialist work such as concrete polishing in-house and maintaining open communication with the client throughout, CiteCon ensured every challenge was met without compromise.
For businesses seeking a construction partner who brings grit, precision, and proven results, CiteCon stands as a company that not only meets expectations – but raises the bar for what construction delivery should be.
Leadership, expertise, and resilience define Paige Gardner, Contracts Administrator/ Project Manager at CiteCon Pty Ltd. These qualities, combined with her deep-rooted family heritage as a fourth-generation builder, have earned her the prestigious Women in Building Award at the 2025 Mackay & Whitsunday Master Builders Awards.
A foundational employee at CiteCon, Paige has dedicated the past five years to mastering the complexities of commercial construction. Backed by qualifications including a Certificate III in Business Administration, a Diploma, and an Advanced Diploma in Construction & Building, she brings both academic strength and practical insight to her role. Her expertise spans contract administration, subcontractor management, and financial oversight, while she also steers CiteCon’s Integrated Management System –ensuring strict compliance with Work,
Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. In addition, she serves as a Commissioner of Declarations, reflecting the trust and integrity she brings to the profession.
Whether navigating complex designand-construct projects, managing tight budgets, or overcoming the pressures of large-scale developments, Paige approaches every challenge with clarity, adaptability, and precision.
Recognised not only for her driven work ethic and technical expertise but also for her mentorship and advocacy, Paige Gardner is carving a powerful path for women in construction.
Now, Paige’s impact is set to be recognised on an even bigger stage – she has been nominated for the Queensland Master Builders Awards, to be held later this year in October, where she will stand among the state’s best in the industry.
Dominating the construction industry is Fergus Builders, multi-award-winning builders who have shaped some of the region’s most well-known buildings for over 40 years. Since 1983, the company has grown into one of the region’s most sought-after builders across residential, commercial, industrial, and community projects. Known for combining craftsmanship, innovation, and community focus, Fergus Builders has earned a reputation for quality and reliability across the state.
The company’s commitment to excellence was once again recognised at the 2025 Master Builders Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards, where Fergus Builders took home seven awards across multiple categories.
Fergus Builders’ award wins highlight both the team’s skill and the company’s values.
Director and Projects Manager Adam Wright said, “We pride ourselves on our hard work and delivering the best possible end result for our clients.”
“Each award is as special as the other, whether its delivering a well needed community asset such as the Airlie Beach Fire Station or building Mackay’s first ALDI, they are all great projects to be involved with.”
The company’s projects span homes, schools, fire stations, and retail facilities. The Holy Spirit College INTAD building in particular, was awarded Best Education Facility, which stood out
for its exceptional quality.
Adam says, “The level of finish of this project really stood out along with the facility itself.”
“One of the best things about building is delivering these types of projects, especially for the community in which you live. It is very rewarding knowing you have helped delivered a vital community service that will serve the community for years to come.”
In residential design, Fergus Builders has also been recognised. The Mayfair display home and Aria individual home exemplify the company’s balance of style, functionality, and affordability.
It’s no doubt that collaboration is central to Fergus Builders’ success.
“Great projects involve great clients, builders, subbies and suppliers. It really is a team effort,” Adam explains.
“Our level of detail and commitment to getting the project completed to the highest possible quality is our main focus.
“But most importantly, our strength is our team.”
Looking ahead, the company plans to maintain its high standards.
“We will continue to strive for excellence in all areas of our business.”
With the 2032 Olympics expected to influence construction in Queensland, Fergus Builders
anticipates opportunities for regional infrastructure projects, particularly in Mackay and the Whitsundays.
For more than forty years, Fergus Builders has not only built homes, schools, and commercial facilities, but strengthened communities through enduring, quality projects.
At the heart of Fergus Builders is a vision rooted in local expertise, pride, and a team-driven approach that continues to set the benchmark for Queensland construction.

Red Emperor Constructions, headquartered in Cannonvale, has been recognised for excellence in residential construction at the prestigious 2025 Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards, hosted by Master Builders Queensland.
The company received five awards on the evening, including the highly coveted House of the Year title for its standout project, Haven on Hamilton. Alistair Sawers, Owner and Director of Red Emperor Constructions, accepted the honours on behalf of the company, extending sincere gratitude to his dedicated in-house team, trusted trades, Master Builders Queensland, and fellow award recipients.
Held on 9 August at Mantra Mackay, the event was a celebration of industry achievement
across the region, with Red Emperor Constructions staff and partners in attendance to mark the occasion.
One of the evening’s highlights was recognition for the recently completed Stage 8C of The Grove, for which Site Manager Iain Karon accepted the award.
Haven on Hamilton, a technically complex and architecturally striking island residence, drew high commendation from judges for its exceptional planning, innovation, and craftsmanship.
The project involved transporting materials to a steep, rocky island site—an engineering and logistical challenge that the Red Emperor Constructions team met with outstanding professionalism and precision.
In their remarks, Master Builders Queensland stated:
“Haven on Hamilton is among the most challenging builds Red Emperor Constructions has undertaken – but the result is spectacular. The team earned high praise for their innovative planning, seamless material logistics from the mainland, and the flawless execution of a truly bespoke home.”
The home showcases premium finishes including polished concrete flooring, exposed concrete and cedar ceilings, bespoke timber joinery, and an infinity-edge pool capturing uninterrupted Whitsunday Island views—a true testament to Red Emperor Constructions’ commitment to quality, detail, and architectural excellence.

Visionary design and construction excellence were in the spotlight at the 2025 Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards, held at the Mantra Mackay on 9 August.
After dominating last year, Fergus Builders once again set the pace, walking away with seven awards — the highest number for any builder across Queensland so far in 2025. Their work spanned both commercial and residential categories. Standouts included best Education Facilities over $10 million for the new Holy Spirit College INTAD Building, Community Service Facilities for the Airlie Beach Fire Station, and Retail Facilities over $5 million for ALDI Andergrove. The team also delivered in residential, claiming best Display Home from $600,000 up to $800,000 for the Mayfair, and Individual Home from $400,000 up to $550,000 for the inviting family home Aria. Fergus also took home wins for Community Accommodation with the Shute Harbour Units, and Commercial Fitout up to $5 million for the GHD Mackay office.
CiteCon also made its mark, securing three major awards. Paige Gardner was recognised with the Women in Building Award for her dedication to mentoring and commitment to a more diverse and inclusive industry.
The company’s technical strength shone through in two commercial categories: best Commercial Refurbishment/Renovation up to $5 million for the Penske Australia fitout in Paget, and best Commercial/Industrial Building from $5 million up to $15 million for the MI Scaffold Industrial Warehouse.
Meanwhile, Cotter Builders impressed in residential design, taking home multiple honours for their craftsmanship and eye for detail. The team won Best Residential Kitchen for the stylish Villa Athena at Racecourse, and Best Individual Home from $700,000 up to $850,000 for the same property. They also claimed Home Renovation Project up to $300,000 for their work on Sana House in West Mackay.
Master Builders Regional Manager Brad Dobie said this year’s winners reflected both skill and resilience.
“From beautifully crafted homes and clever renovations to vital infrastructure and community spaces delivered under pressure, our members have shown what’s possible when passion meets professionalism,” he said.
The extensive display of building excellence showcased at the awards has demonstrated the breadth of talent shaping the Mackay and Whitsunday region — from innovative community infrastructure to bespoke homes and industry-leading workplaces — setting a benchmark for construction excellence in 2025.
Transparent & innovative building practice, mindful of every detail Winner in the Master Builders Awards: Individual Home from $1.5 million up to $2 million eastwoodprojects.com EQ
In just ten years, Cotter Builders has carved a reputation for precision, innovation, and homes that don’t just impress, but win awards.
The Mackay-based husband-and-wife, building designer-builder duo of Michael and Madison Cotter, along with the hard-working team behind them, recently celebrated multiple victories at the Master Builders Mackay Housing and Construction Awards, walking away with three coveted accolades.
While their Sana House renovation took out Best Home Renovation Project up to $300,000, it was their Villa Athena project—Best Individual Home $700,000–$850,000 and Best Residential Kitchen—that stood out even against homes valued up to $5 million. Punching well above its weight, the high-profile build showcased the meticulous attention to detail and innovative design that has made Cotter Builders a household name in the local industry.
“We’re pretty proud of ourselves, and I don’t think we really expected to come away with [the Best Residential Kitchen] award,” Madison says.
“We’re just two very determined, dedicated people that love doing what we do every day. We’ve spent thousands of hours further developing our business and skillsets to deliver the best quality to our clients… which has ultimately seen us grow into a multi-award winning team very quickly.”
The pair started Cotter Builders at just 23, combining their complementary skills—Michael’s builder background and ‘yes man’ attitude, and Madison’s design expertise—into a business now employing nine staff. The business prides itself on designing every home in-house, starting from scratch to meet client needs and ensure no two projects are the same.
“As Mackay’s Custom home builder, our goal
is always to challenge ourselves and deliver something unique and fully customised to our clients brief, every time.”
But beyond Cotter Builders ’quality, innovation and awards, its real strength lies in a tight-knit, family-oriented approach.
“We’re a very family-oriented business,” says administrator Tamara Doolan. “We’re constantly supported by [Madison] and [Michael] with flexibility through work or just with general support. They’re honestly the best people.”
Even the Cotters’ young boys get involved, kitted out in little Cotter Builders shirts and tagging along to site visits. Because for Michael, Madison, and the team at Cotter Builders, building homes and building family go hand in hand.

The Trusted Local Partner Delivering the Household Resilience Program
When it comes to protecting homes and families across Queensland, one name continues to stand out as a trusted leader: Geiger Solutions Pty Ltd. Proudly based in the region and backed by a proven reputation for reliability, quality workmanship, and genuine community care, Geiger Solutions has become the go-to company for homeowners looking to secure their property through the Household Resilience Program.
What is the Household Resilience Program?
The Queensland Government’s Household Resilience Program (HRP) is an initiative designed to help homeowners in cyclone-prone areas improve the structural safety of their homes. First introduced in 2018, the program provides eligible homeowners with government funding to cover part of the cost of essential upgrades.
The focus is on strengthening older homes –those built before 1984 – that may not meet current building codes designed for cyclone resistance. By upgrading roofs, windows, doors, and other critical areas, the program helps safeguard families against severe weather while also reducing insurance premiums in some cases.
In simple terms, the Household Resilience Program allows Queenslanders to:
• Access financial suppor t to upgrade and cyclone-proof their homes.
• Improve safety for their families during severe storms and cyclones.
• Potentially lower home insurance costs due to reduced risk.
• Add long-term value and peace of mind to their property.
Why Geiger Solutions?
As a company deeply embedded in the community, Geiger Solutions has built its reputation on trust, transparency, and workmanship that goes above and beyond. With decades of combined experience in roofing, construction, and home resilience, the team understands exactly what is required to meet the program’s strict standards.
Local homeowners choose Geiger Solutions
because:
• Proven Expertise: The team specialises in roofing, cyclone upgrades, and structural works that directly align with HRP requirements.
• Government Approved: Geiger Solutions is recognised as a trusted provider under the program, ensuring homeowners are in safe and qualified hands.
• Community Values: As a local business, they care about the safety of their neighbours, treating every project as if it were their own home.
• Guidance and Support: The process of applying for funding can feel overwhelming, but Geiger Solutions assists homeowners every step of the way – from application to completion.
A Track Record of Resilience
Over the past few years, Geiger Solutions has helped countless families strengthen their homes through the Household Resilience Program. From roof replacements and tiedown upgrades to cyclone-rated windows and doors, their projects stand as a testament to the benefits of the scheme.
Many local families who once worried every cyclone season now enjoy peace of mind knowing their homes are safer and stronger. This transformation is thanks in no small part to
Geiger Solutions’ commitment to excellence.
A Safer Community, One Home at a Time Cyclones are an unavoidable part of life in Queensland, but damage and loss don’t have to be. Through the Household Resilience Program – and with the trusted expertise of Geiger Solutions – homeowners can take proactive steps to protect their families and communities. “We’re proud to be part of a program that not only protects homes but also gives families confidence heading into storm season,” a spokesperson from Geiger Solutions explained. “It’s about building resilience, reducing risk, and keeping our community safe.”
How to Get Started
Homeowners interested in the Household Resilience Program are encouraged to check their eligibility through the Queensland Government website. Once approved, contacting a trusted local company like Geiger Solutions ensures the process is smooth, professional, and results in lasting protection.

In a world where parenting often comes with more questions than answers, Empower 4 Success is redefining support for families and communities in Mackay and beyond, combining practical strategies, holistic wellness, and evidence-based guidance to help adults confidently respond to children’s emotional and behavioural needs.
The wheels were set in motion earlier this year when Mellissa Austin, a lifelong educator with Masters degrees in Special Education and Guidance and Counselling, recognised a pressing need for accessible, hands-on support for parents. Drawing on nearly 20 years of experience in schools, coupled with her own lived experience, Mellissa launched Empower 4 Success to bridge that gap, providing flexible, tailored solutions for families and caregivers.
Empower 4 Success offers a suite of programs and resources designed to build knowledge and confidence, leveraging diverse methods that reach beyond traditional parenting support. From personalised coaching and hands-on parental workshops to the Move 4 Mind fitness program and music tuition, each approach is designed to strengthen wellbeing and arm adults with strategies applicable to real-life. “Everything I offer is about the wellness of people,” says Mellissa. “It’s all just about growing positive mental health, whether you’re five or 50.”
For Mellissa and Empower 4 Success, the goal is to impart her expertise on as many people as possible. The self-authorship of her book, Be The Change, was born from that ethos. “I realised that one-off sessions with a professional weren’t enough,” she explains. “But if I could give parents the skills to implement strategies at home, every day, the impact would be far greater.” Be The Change equips adults with a clear understanding of why behaviours occur and how to respond effectively, debunking common parenting myths via tried-and-tested research. “Waiting for kids to ‘just behave ’doesn’t work,” Mellissa says. “It’s about teaching them what they should be doing rather than what they shouldn’t, as well as giving them the coping strategies they need to manage their emotions well.”
Beyond the book, Empower 4 Success makes support widely accessible through a variety of free workshops, giving parents who might feel socially or financially stretched the tools and confidence to support their children, while Mellissa’s strong online presence spreads practical tips on behaviour, routines, and wellness to an even broader audience.
Looking ahead, the business plans to expand programs for educators and early childhood centres, while continuing to strengthen support for families across the region. “I think the earlier we can support the adults who are working with the children… the more chance we have for those young people to grow up with positive mental health,” says Mellissa. With a focus on practical, evidence-based strategies and an inclusive, community-centred approach, Empower 4 Success is setting a new standard for holistic support.

Step through the doors of Bright Patch Café and you’re not just ordering a coffee, you’re entering a wonderland of colour, creativity and connection. With a bright, colourful mural, playful nooks, and an amazing playpen, this is no ordinary café. It’s a community hub where inclusivity and imagination shine as brightly as the décor.
The vision belongs to Jameela Walker and her family. Bright Patch Café has been a family venture sparked by a shared love of food, family, and adventure. Jameela grew up café-hopping with her late mum, Vanessa, and wanted to create a space that felt more like an experience than a pit stop.
Inspired by Alice in Wonderland’s spirit of curiosity, the café is equal parts playhouse, community lounge, and coffee haven. Parents can relax while kids explore, friends can linger over board games, and everyone is welcome. The neurodivergent inclusivity is the proud heart of the space. Its hospitality is designed to fill your cup in every sense.
Behind the magic is a long list of local collaborators: artist Katie Louise transformed the walls, Total Fitouts Cairns worked wonders with the build, HP Interiors gave shape to the whimsical design, and Versatile Marketing Team provided marketing solutions support both online and offline. From coffee guru Tim Adams
supplying the coffee machine, to the Whitsunday Regional Council helping to navigate approvals, Bright Patch is a true community effort.
And it doesn’t stop at good food and fun décor. The café is also gearing up for Liptember, supporting women’s mental health with lipstickfuelled fundraising, while regularly partnering with local schools, charities and groups.
Bright, bold, and beautifully different, Bright Patch Café is rewriting the café rulebook, proving that when community, creativity, and coffee collide, magic really does happen.

rom a humble father-and-son venture on a farm outside Maryborough in 1993 to a powerhouse in regional media, Bishopp has charted a remarkable journey. What began with CEO Brad Bishopp’s first hand-painted billboard for Dundathu Turf Farm has grown into a sprawling network that seamlessly connects businesses with audiences across Australia and New Zealand. Along the way, the company has combined entrepreneurial grit, community focus, and a commitment to innovation—turning a simple idea into one of the nation’s most trusted regional media companies.
The enthusiasm of youth, paired with a father’s encouragement to think bigger, pushed them to go out on their own. Their steady, measured approach to growth has shaped Bishopp’s journey, as Brad says, “I’ve always taken the approach of just putting one foot in front of the other and quietly growing the business.”
Today, Bishopp combines national reach with a truly local touch.
Mackay based Account Executive, Solveig Lobo, is a familiar and trusted face in the community. “I love being part of Bishopp because they value not just the work we do, but the relationships we build,” Solveig says.
“Being trusted to support local businesses while staying connected to the community is incredibly rewarding.”
That commitment to community is evident in the company’s support of local causes, such as the Mackay Hospital Foundation. From billboard promotions for the Dancing With Heart fundraiser to raising awareness for major events, Bishopp’s donated media has created strong impact.

“True story!”
With digitisation transforming out-ofhome advertising, Bishopp is leading the way in regional Australia, offering dynamic roadside messaging, 3D airport creative, and data-driven targeting through MOVE.

i, I am Prabha Srinivasan. I grew up in southern India. Teachings of Yoga was so entrenched in my upbringing that I didn’t know otherwise. After moving to Australia in 2005, I had to integrate Australian lifestyle with my Indian roots. In 2016, I felt compelled to go back to India and complete a Yoga teacher training intensive. As part of the training, I was introduced to the philosophical texts behind ancient meditation practices. Formal meditation practise has since transformed my life and the lives of many I have taught.
Alongside being a registered Counsellor with 12 years’ experience in the mental health field, I founded the Brahmanandam Meditation School (BMS) to share the benefits of daily meditation practice. Stress, anxiety and depression are all too common, and many people push through without support until something breaks down. My goal is to provide tools that promote relaxation, positive thinking and meaningful engagement with life, so people can maintain healthier minds and
bodies.
At BMS, we are building a community of teachers, mentors and students committed to spiritual growth and improved wellbeing. We welcome meditators of all levels, offering guidance through private mentoring, workshops and practice groups. The school is non-denominational, focusing on regular meditation while also facilitating selfdevelopment and healing through different modalities.
Like many ventures, BMS grew from challenges. In 2016, I started a not-for-profit wellbeing centre that ran successfully until Covid forced its closure in 2021. Following that, I decided to shift to an online format that allows people to learn and practise anywhere, anytime.
BMS is service-oriented, donating all profits to charity. For me, this work is about sharing life hacks that help people stay balanced, while contributing to the wider community.
We are hosting a free virtual launch event in October, where our team will present on different topics, welcome new members and introduce our upcoming programs. To learn more and register for the event, visit www.facebook.com/meditatewithbms
When Gabriella Sóvágó walked away from the corporate world in 2017, she was determined to create a business that fused her passion for marketing with her love of travel. That vision became Glow Sphere Marketing, a full-service agency that has grown from its beginnings as a flexible coaching practice into a trusted partner for businesses across Australia.
Gabriella’s fascination with marketing began in high school. With both parents running their own businesses, she saw first-hand how strategy and psychology could attract customers and keep them coming back.
After studying marketing in Budapest and business management in Cambridge, experiences that gave her a strong foundation in both the creative and analytical sides of the field, she spent her early career training sales how to present products effectively.
In 2017 she left her corporate job to travel the world, using Glow Sphere Marketing as a platform to coach small business owners on how to grow with smarter marketing. In 2021, Gabriella settled in Australia and the business evolved.
“Clients started asking me to take on their marketing directly, instead of coaching them through it. Over time, Glow Sphere Marketing naturally evolved into a fullservice agency, offering everything from Google Ads to website design, training, and strategic consulting.”
That organic growth is grounded in strong values.
“Glow Sphere Marketing is guided by innovation, accountability, adaptability, and respect,” Gabriella says.
“These values have helped us build relationships based on transparency, flexibility, and a commitment to treating each business with care.”
One campaign Gabriella recalls with pride involved Nancy’s Gym, a local fitness centre struggling to fill offpeak hours.
“We reworked his advertising strategy, and within just a month he had completely filled those spots. It was incredibly rewarding to see the impact that a tailored, strategic approach could have on his business in such a
short time.”
At the heart of Glow Sphere Marketing’s success is its integrated approach, beginning with a clear brand story and customer persona.
“It’s the most important step we never skip, and one many agencies overlook,” Gabriella notes. From there, Glow Sphere Marketing delivers cohesive strategies across digital, creative design, and advertising.
Looking ahead, Glow Sphere Marketing continues to push boundaries by blending AI and human creativity. Gabriella has been working with AI since 2015, when she contributed to an AI product development project. Today, she uses AIpowered SEO, offering clients an edge in increasingly competitive markets.
Reflecting on her journey, Gabriella says, “The most rewarding moment for me was realising that Glow Sphere Marketing was no longer just a dream, it had become a reality.
“That moment of knowing the business was not only surviving but thriving was incredibly special, because it meant all the effort and risk had turned into something real and lasting.”
With its focus on innovation, education, and partnerships built on trust, Glow Sphere Marketing continues to empower small businesses, helping them shine in competitive markets.
Born and bred in Mackay, Ashleigh Lindner has always called the region home. With her entire family close by and three daughters attending local schools, her life is deeply tied to the community she now helps others settle into. “People get scared to move to the Northern Beaches, but everywhere you turn, there’s a school, a shopping centre, you’re central to everything,” she says. “When I tell people I’m local, born and bred here, they realise I really do know the area.”
Ashleigh’s route into real
apprenticeship. “I went and did a painting apprenticeship, it gave me a lot of life skills and insight into the property market, which I still carry through now.” From there, she worked in hospitality and sales before spotting an opening at PRD Northern Beaches, as a property manager. The role offered a front-row seat to the entire property journey, from rental appraisals to securing sales. By January this year, Ashleigh had stepped into sales full-time, and she hasn’t looked back.
The transition wasn’t without challenges. “January, February, March, I sold nothing. I was doing 40 appraisals a month just to get my name
stop.” That determination is now paying off as Ashleigh builds her reputation as a trusted name in the industry.
She urges anyone looking to buy or sell in the region not to wait: “Don’t hesitate. Just because you think your house needs a fresh coat of paint, or the garden could use some work, or because your mum or a friend told you it’s a bad time to sell, don’t let that stop you. In real estate, there’s a saying: there’s never a bad time to sell.”
Honesty is central to her approach. “ I don’t provide arbitrary figures; I base my valuations on local comparables to ensure alignment with current market activity and recent sales. It doesn’t matter what your house looks like; we can help. Whether you want to rent it or sell it, it doesn’t need to be difficult. We work for the
Along the way, Ashleigh has shown an exceptional ability to connect with people, a quality she says sets her apart from other agents. For her, the work goes far beyond closing deals; she genuinely cares about her clients. She loves spending time with them and thrives on rising to any challenge. Her role has given her the privilege of witnessing some of the most extraordinary milestones in people’s lives, moments she says make the job truly special.
“Just yesterday, I was taking my first-home buyers through their house. It’s unconditional, we’re just waiting for paperwork to go through, and the partner, who I hadn’t met, got down on one knee and proposed to her.”
For Ashleigh, experiences like these are what truly drive her. Real estate, she believes, is not about transactions, but trust. It’s about persistence, relationships, and community. Or, as she sums it up simply: “Consistency is key.”

Mackay-born Bre Sanders is proving that talent, tenacity, and authenticity can turn a dream into national recognition. As owner of the acclaimed beauty salon Sense of Skin, she is one of just four winners across Australia selected for the prestigious ABIA Beauty Squad 2025, held in Sydney on August 17.
“I didn’t always dream of having my own clinic, however, when working for others it soon became a dream of mine… I didn’t want the limitations,” Bre recalls.
That dream became Sense of Skin, a salon where every facial, brow, and lash treatment is delivered with precision, care, and a personal connection.
“No two skins are the same and shouldn’t be treated as,” she explains.
Bre’s approach is informed by more than 11 years in the industry and by her own personal experience navigating skin challenges through different stages of life.
“The skin is ever-changing throughout a person’s lifetime. From experience, at numerous times in my life my skin has played havoc with my self-confidence.
“I never found a place where I could go with full faith in the business or in the therapist to actually know what they were doing or how they were going to help me with something that was actually debilitating. I’ll never forget being in high school trying to cover my skin and having the teachers hand me make-up wipes at the beginning of a day… that feeling is embedded in me.
“I hope Sense of Skin is this place for someone who is feeling hopeless and who is struggling. I hope I can bring them clarity and give them faith in fixing their skin.”
Her ABIA Beauty Squad win has already proven transformative, offering Bre one-on-one mentorship with some of the industry’s biggest icons.
“Being a sole operator, it sets off the ‘sparks’ again. It’s so inspiring and motivating, but also just to have the option to bounce ideas off people who think the same as you and have the
same ambitions,” she says.
Now recognised as a rising regional powerhouse, Bre hopes her journey will inspire others to take bold steps toward their goals.
“I want to be remembered as that person who did everything to regain someone else’s selfconfidence.”
And when she does step away from the salon, Bre’s time is devoted to family.
“My free time is minimal so it’s usually spent with my family. My nephew is the absolute light of my life – soon to have a little niece in a couple of weeks.”
Her boldest idea: Starting Sense of Skin. “Everything I offer has been researched down to the last inch to offer nothing but the best for my clients. Nothing is mediocre.”
How she remains grounded: Her parents. “My mum has always been my emotional support and my dad has always given me straight facts – don’t get carried away with the stuff that doesn’t matter.”

After a three-year break from the Whitsunday property market, familiar face Lukas Vaid is back—and this time with a fresh perspective shaped by family, community and a genuine passion for helping people find their perfect home.
Although he never really left the region, Lukas stepped away from full-time real estate to work fly-in, fly-out. Becoming a dad was the catalyst for his return.
“Starting a family and having a daughter made me want to be more present,” he said. “I wanted to enjoy watching her grow up.”
Lukas has returned to Taylors Property Specialists, where he previously worked alongside Brad Sobott.
“I worked at Taylors for about three years, and I learned a lot under Brad’s guidance. He’s a very professional agent and auctioneer.”
His route into real estate wasn’t planned. With an engineering background and a methodical mindset, Lukas only considered the field after his wife encouraged him. A conversation with Rob Taylor quickly turned
into a new career, and within weeks he was in the office, learning the ropes.
For Lukas, the job is about more than just properties.
“It’s the people,” he says.
“Seeing people’s faces, understanding the emotional side of a transaction; it’s incredibly fulfilling to join the dots between a buyer and seller. You see the joy of a young couple stepping into their first home, or the relief of a seller navigating a difficult situation. It’s not always easy, but it’s very satisfying.”
Now working solo, he is focused on delivering precision and care. “I can’t afford to make mistakes, everything I do matters, down to the last detail. I don’t have the luxury of thinking things will just come to me. I have to work for it, and I’m prepared to do that.”
With his deep local knowledge, professional experience and approachable style, Lukas is ready to help locals navigate the property market and find their ideal home while supporting the community he proudly calls home.

There are three types of super fund: Industry Funds, Retail Funds and Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSF’s). It’s not like one type is better than the other, it’s which one suits your stage of life, current financial situation and where you’re headed financially in the future.
Industry Super funds are where most people start out when joining the workforce. Over the last 10 years, the government have forced those with higher fees and lower returns to amalgamate with better options and we’re down to about 60 Australia wide nowadays. The biggest funds like Aussie Super, ART and HostPlus are reasonably well run and offer decent returns with competitive fees. Many financial planners use these where appropriate, which is often for lower balance clients earlier in their working life where the person doesn’t want much choice and control of how their money is invested. These are a pooled investment structure with other members and generally offer some basic personal insurances for Death, Total & Permanent Disability and maybe Income Protection.
Retail super funds, as the name suggests, are where you chose to buy a super fund from a product provider. This is usually done with the advice of a Financial Planner who has assessed your financial position and goals to help make the choice for your situation. Retail funds range from very old products that should be upgraded to new modern super Wrap style accounts. These products can Wrap around a huge choice of investments and insurance products and underlying investments are held individually in your account rather than pooled. The largest providers here are the big banks like Macquarie or Colonial First State or BT. These funds usually suit larger balances and those who want more control over their investments and particularly young families that need a full suite of customised personal insurances that work in with their super.
SMSF’s are where you pay a firm to set you up your own personal super fund and do the administration and tax work each year. These are often set up and administered by
accountants and there are higher fees that come with this. Generally, they only suit either very high balances over $1,000,000 or people whose situation warrants ultimate investment choice. These are the only style of super product that allow direct property investment. This can be suitable for self-employed people who own their business premises or very high balance clients who can buy a direct property and still have enough left in super to remain diversified across shares, fixed interest and cash.
With so much choice it all comes down to your personal situation and what you need from a super fund. Having a SMSF might sound trendy at the BBQ but in the wrong situation it can be a disastrous choice for your financial future.

From serving with the Royal Navy during the Iraq War to caring for patients in their homes, Simon McMahon’s journey is remarkable. As founder and Director of Pioneer Nursing Service, Simon combines grit, compassion, and a sense of purpose to reimagine community care.
The idea came during his time as a Nurse Unit Manager during the height of COVID. “I saw how many patients were unable to go home because community services couldn’t provide the staff needed to support them.” Simon recalls.
“We’re all about experience with heart — our team of support workers, nurses, and coordinators know their stuff and genuinely care. That mix of skill and compassion helps people live better, brighter lives.”
Determined to change things, Simon launched Pioneer Nursing Service to help people remain at home, safe, supported, and surrounded by family. Whether it’s hospital discharges, end-of-life care, or daily support, his team offers families peace of mind.
Outside of work, Simon enjoys sailing, kayaking, and beach walks with his two quirky rescue dogs. A proud member of the WalkerstonPleystowe RSL, he also values time with family and friends.

In today’s wellness world, the idea of eating “little and often” is everywhere. Yet, more and more research, along with my clinical experience, shows that the opposite approach may be more powerful for digestion, weight management, and better energy.
I encourage my clients to focus on three balanced meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with water in between. Here’s why:
Weight management
Snacking can secretly add up to hundreds of extra calories without us realising. Grazing on “just a little something” between meals not only prevents true hunger from building, but it also makes it harder to release weight. By committing to three satisfying meals, you reduce mindless intake and give your body time to use what you
have already eaten.
Energy and efficiency
Digestion is one of the body’s most energydemanding tasks. When we are constantly snacking, the digestive system never gets a rest. That energy drain can leave you more fatigued, craving sugar in the afternoon, and less able to focus. Pausing between meals allows your body to redirect energy toward other vital processes, such as detoxification and repair.
Perhaps the most fascinating reason to avoid constant grazing is the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC). This is a powerful “self-cleaning” wave of contractions that sweeps through your small intestine between meals. It clears away undigested food and pushes bacteria down
into the colon, where they belong. Eating too frequently and living in a stressed state switch this cycle off. Without it, bacteria can build up in the small intestine, contributing to bloating and conditions such as SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).
Where to begin
If you are a chronic snacker, start small. Choose to eliminate either your mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack. Once that habit feels comfortable, work on removing the other. Your gut will thank you with better energy, less bloating, and improved digestion.

Multi music award winner Jessica Mauboy will make her first Airlie Beach Festival of Music appearance this November.
The much-loved Australian music legend first gained recognition on Australian Idol but in an exclusive interview with Whitsunday Life Newspaper, she said performing live is her ultimate joy.
“Being able to play it live, is my ultimate favourite. So, it’s an absolute honour and opportunity to be able to do that in Airlie Beach. I'm looking forward to that,” she said.
“I love to get to know the people because that's what really makes it right, the people and obviously the energy and the spirit of the place.
“I'm looking forward to really indulging it, as much as I love performing, I really love getting to know a place.”
Jessica Mauboy is set to bring songs from her entire discography including her first and second albums, and maybe even some hit songs from the feature film The Sapphires, plus a range of
her newer music.
Her newest song ‘While I Got Time’, featured as Irene Robert's farewell on Home and Away, and Mauboy said the brief she was given from her publisher was inspiring.
“She says to me, I've got dot points that the third party have sent over and they would love you to write a song about your loved ones. what it's like if you were to venture out and leave, what would you leave behind? What kind of legacy would you like to leave behind? A song about in-depth reflection about life. And so, I did that.”
“The intentional production was very intimate and just little harmonies here and there, just to kind of hear the guitar play, the emotions of the lyrics and the voice, is what we wanted.
“I've never been a part of a project like that in my life. So this was really unexpected, but such a really warm project and sincere experience I've never been a part of.”
Jessica Mauboy is also fresh off being inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards
(NIMA) Hall of Fame.
“I think having grown up in Darwin and the Northern Territory, to receive an award in my hometown that I love so dearly, to be presented that by my own community and my elders and people who I admire in at the NIMA’s, I was really in disbelief,” she said.
“I stand with the award with pride and honour.” Mauboy is also keen to support local initiatives like Passport to Airlie, which gives emerging musicians the chance to perform at future Airlie Beach Festival of Music events.
“Our local stages are so important, so, we need to take care of them, we need to nurture them. As much as the big stages outside are amazing. You always remember the beginning of it and I still remember my first stage,” she said.
“The one thing I would say is learn from that experience. Learn from the stages. Learn from the people who build the stages from ground, and who create the festivals and take care of them.”
