Every single member of the team has pulled together and worked especially hard this week – thanks guys!

The office has been operating at a faster pace than usual and while it’s been exhausting, it has also highly exhilarating! Energy levels have been propped up by caffeine and

chocolate, and by now possibly a few glasses of celebratory wine!

Another team that works extremely hard here in the region is Tourism Whitsundays. The effort that went into organising the Whitsunday Tourism Awards was incredible, and the event was a great celebration of our vibrant tourism sector.

With 1 in 3 local jobs relying on tourism in the region, the work Tourism Whitsundays do to bring holidaymakers here from both near and far is vital to our economy and it was wonderful to celebrate the whole industry’s achievements on Saturday night.

$50 BECOMES $3000

THANKS TO KIND-HEARTED COMMUNITY

Every day we are blessed to be in this wonderful Whitsunday community and Sofia Andreou experienced that first hand.

Last week, she posted on a popular Facebook community chat site offering to give $50 for free to go to a good home.

It all began when she was cleaning her rental property and found a $50 note hidden behind a book, deciding not to keep it but give it away instead.

“So I thought, I’m going to actually advertise this because it’s $50 I didn’t even notice that I had and it’s very easy to forget when we are prospering, that $50 is really everything to somebody,” she said.

“I thought I might do an experiment and just see if anybody would realise that it was genuine and take me up on it.”

Sofia found the response on the Facebook group overwhelming and beautiful in many ways.

“It opened my eyes to how

many people are suffering,” said Sofia.

“Secondly, it made me so grateful for our Whitsunday community, because there was such a large response of other generous people wanting to help as well.

“For example, there were a few people saying in the comments, I need this, or I need this, or I’m struggling with this, or I’m struggling with that. And so many people in the community put their hands up and said, well, I can also help, and I can also help.

“That really brought me to tears.”

Sofia initially advertised the $50 she found and then ended up giving $50 six times over, out of her pocket, because she realised how many people needed it.

She also estimated that her initial post turned into the community giving $3000 worth of donations.

Up, Up, And Away! Funding Announced For Skyway Project

The highly anticipated Whitsunday Skyway received a funding pledge this week, promising to propel the $87 million project closer to its goal of being the largest piece of on-land infrastructure in our region.

Amanda Camm MP, Member for Whitsunday, stated that if the LNP are successful in this weekend’s election, they would immediately invest $5 million into the project to get it off the ground and lift the local economy.

The Skyway project will feature a 1km all-weather cable car ride that soars 430m above sea level, offering visitors 360 degree panoramic views of the Whitsunday islands and hinterland.

Amanda Camm said the Whitsunday Skyway will deliver a strong economic impact.

“The Skyway will create 140 new direct jobs on completion, and 591 additional indirect jobs, injecting millions into the local economy,” Ms Camm said.

“It will also deliver major flow-on benefits to other tourism-aligned businesses including accommodation, restaurants, tour operators and more.

“This is catalytic tourism infrastructure that positions Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays as the Heart of the Reef.”

Australian Adventure Tourism Group (AATG) chair Elizabeth Hackett said the project will take Airlie Beach to the next level.

“The Whitsunday Skyway is a sustainable way to showcase the natural beauty of the Whitsunday region, offering visitors land-based adventure activities and spectacular tropical rainforest experiences, including guided tours,” Ms Hackett said.

“Once formal planning and approvals are in place, we expect the construction timeframe to take between 12-18 months.

“The project has strong support from the Whitsunday Regional Council and local tourism operators and will drive economic growth across the region.”

Shadow Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Sam O’Connor, said the project will attract both domestic and international tourists to Airlie Beach.

“The LNP is committed to delivering infrastructure that showcases Queensland’s natural assets, by driving the development of more tourism experiences.

“An LNP Government will ensure this project operates within strict environmental guidelines, applying strong protections through the approval process to safeguard the pristine natural beauty of the Whitsundays region.”

Home And Away Films In Whitsundays

Over the last few weeks some of our favourite actors from hit TV show Home and Away have been filming in the region proving there is nowhere quite like the Whitsundays for a stunning backdrop and holiday atmosphere.

The cast and crew filmed across several local locations including Bowen, Foxdale, Airlie Beach and Daydream Island for two weeks.

We’ll have to wait for the show’s release to learn more about the cast and crew’s activities, however, Location Manager James Doherty revealed that they have engaged local talent for extras and partnered with cherished local businesses for accommodations and filming locations.

Additionally, Home and Away’s Instagram has teased a comeback for Ziggy and Dean, promising to revive their beloved Summer Bay romance.

The episodes, showcasing the spectacular Whitsundays have no set air-date yet, however, are set to appear on the your tv screens in about 6 months’ time.

James explained that they chose the Whitsundays due to its very distinct style that is hard to replicate:

“We’ve been up and down all the East Coast, we went and scouted several areas like Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Yeppoon, we went to all those places and still came to pick the Whitsundays and its surrounds,” he shared.

“For us it has the best of all the worlds, you have the cane fields, the Great Barrier Reef, and you’ve got some beautiful local towns that aren’t as looked upon favorably as other towns. We have found so much beauty in those towns, and have really enjoyed our time here.”

Year 12 Student Dies In Tragic Car Crash

The whole community is in mourning this week following news that 17-year-old Proserpine State High School student Bree Day tragically passed away after six days in hospital following a road accident at Myrtlevale on the Bruce Highway.

The crash occurred at 3:25pm on Friday 11 October and it is believed Bree was performing a U-turn on the highway when her vehicle collided with a truck.

She was transported to Proserpine Hospital with severe head injuries and was transferred to Townsville Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and her passing was announced on Thursday 17th October.

Bree, who had just celebrated receiving her P-plates, was in her last year of high-school and had only weeks until graduating. She would have been due to celebrate the end of her school career, making her sudden death all the more devastating for her friends, family and broader community.

The driver of the truck, a 52-yearold Burdell man, was not physically injured.

A Queensland Police Service

spokeswoman said the Forensic Crash Unit is still investigating the incident. The Bruce Highway was closed for several hours due to the crash.

This crash comes less than two months after a 22-year-old woman lost her life also on the Bruce Highway.

LOCAL CANDIDATES GIVE THEIR FINAL PITCH AHEAD OF ELECTION DAY THIS SATURDAY

1: This is your final elevator pitch - in 80 words - what makes you the best candidate for the job?

QUESTIONS POSED FOR EACH CANDIDATE TO ANSWER:

2: If successful, what is the one key project/legacy achievement that you will be remembered for?

AMANDA CAMM LNP CANDIDATE FOR WHITSUNDAY

1: I have worked extremely hard over the last four years listening to the community and advocating for our region. It is frustrating representing from opposition. However, I proudly stood up for the women of Mackay & Whitsundays during the Obstetrics & Gynaecology and DNA Lab Queensland Health failures. I have continually called out the Government for poor consultation or stalling on projects like Shute Harbour Road or Hamilton Plains. Sometimes it’s resulted in a win with work

commencing.

2: I hope my personal legacy as an MP will be one who listens, advocates and delivers for the community. I have been listening and advocating to a government that has refused to listen for the last four years. My first focus will be on delivering projects for our region that have sat idle under this Labor government. The main ones will be Mackay Bucasia Road in the southern part of the electorate and Hamilton Plains in the North and delivering a Shute Bay Boat

3: What role do you think local newspapers play in regional communities?

Ramp.

3: Local newspapers are vital to keeping communities connected. People can find State and National news through other mediums, but they’ll never have the same amount of local content as a local paper. I think everyone felt the loss of local papers when many closed during COVID. It plays an important role in connecting our community, informing, celebrating and communicating what matters.

JULIE HALL ONE NATION CANDIDATE FOR WHITSUNDAY

1: I stand for the people, with common sense, people focused, policy. I don’t represent the party, nor do I have to tow the party line, like LNP and Labor do. The cross bench can bring the balance of power back to the people where it belongs and hold both major parties to account. The choice is simple, do you want a hands-on MP to represent you, or a career politician that represents their party first.

2: Changing legislation that is crippling

businesses, taking away our freedoms, and forcing woke ideology into our workplaces and schools. I will support the Katter Party’s Termination of Pregnancy (Life Births) Amendment bill to ensure babies born alive after a failed abortion will receive pain relief and care. I will also seek to change the legislation that allows perfectly healthy babies to be terminated right up to the day before birth. Both LNP and Labor have stated they will not support these changes, I WILL!

3: Local papers are the heart of the community. They keep the community informed and connected and we most certainly do not want to lose them. Whitsunday Life is a great asset to our community. When it comes to elections all news media should be seen to be A-Political, however, you will see across all media platforms it is the Labor and LNP candidates that are always featured, you seldom see the minor parties getting the same coverage, which is not only biased, but unfair.

ANDREW ELBORNE ONE NATION CANDIDATE FOR BURDEKIN

1: There is no better school in the world than travel and life experience, so if you want real solutions to the issues of today you need a new set of eyes and minds on the job and not career politicians that have not been able to fix the issue in the last 10 years without more rights removing legislation.

2: When we fix the money wasting renewable problem we can then concentrate on using the money to fix the local issues, simplifying and removing unnecessary and obtuse legislation that only serves to chain up and hinder the working families of the community - the community safety bill for instance, and its blatant discrimination against farmers and sporting gun owners.

ANNE BAKER LABOR CANDIDATE FOR BURDEKIN

3: The local newspapers play a huge role in regional communities, just as long as they stay a-political and give every party the same respect and time to give their stance on issues. They should be owned by the communities as well and not oversees interests.

4: I would say honestly I am not doing this

4: What would you say to someone who has never voted for your party before but is thinking about it?

4: I would ask if they are better off now than they were 10 years ago under this Labor Government? The reality is, that currently in Queensland only the LNP or Labor can win enough seats to form government. Whilst the Labor Government has spent the last 10 not delivering projects on time or on budget and with no consultation or transparency, the LNP has a plan to fix housing, crime, the health system and cost of living issues.

4: If you don’t like where things are going, and you’re as concerned as I am about the future for our kids, then you need to vote differently. Under the major parties whether it was LNP or Labor Federally, or Labor in State, our lives have got a lot harder. We should be the luckiest country in the world with the resources that we have, yet we have gone backwards under these major parties. Give us a go, seriously, how much more can we afford to lose?

as a job, I have stood on the side line praying for the government to do the right thing and represent the people, but have come to the realisation that the big parties are now so entrenched with party politics, meaning following overseas influence, that they have forgotten how they got elected and that is by the people, so it’s time someone who is only interested in people politics steps up.

1: After 17 years successfully putting my heart and soul into representing the Isaac region in local government, the last 12 of those as Mayor of Isaac bringing in over $400M of funding to the region, I understand how the system works and I feel like I can do better for Burdekin. I am ready to stand up for local working families, businesses, agriculture, mining, construction and regional communities. The Burdekin electorate needs a voice that will be heard by State Government.

roads seen in the last eight years of current representation. I can do so much more if elected, this is just the start.

2: I will be remembered for securing $157M in fully committed roads funding as just a candidate, the most funding for

DALE LAST LNP CANDIDATE FOR BURDEKIN

1: No matter whether you live in Middlemount, Giru or anywhere in between, for the past ten years I have listened and taken up the fight for issues that matter to constituents and my hope is to continue to do that in the future. In regional areas we have to fight tooth and nail to secure our fair share and that means having a strong voice to advocate for safer roads, better access to health services and more opportunities for our next generation.

2: Knowing that I have been a strong voice for the Burdekin on issues that matter most will be an honour I will carry with me for years to come. Seeing our netball players competing on new courts, knowing that patients with time-critical health issues are going to get the CT they need at the Ayr Hospital and seeing our firefighters able to train at their own station will be achievements I know this community will be able to be proud of.

3: Papers are integral to regional communities and play multiple roles . Newspapers are the glue that connect a community, from news, to birth and engagement no-

3: The importance of regional newspapers has been emphasised in recent years, particularly in areas of rural and regional Queensland that don’t have reliable access to internet or telecommunications. There is no other place to find out what is happening in the community, to read about the achievements of our best and brightest or to find out who won our local sporting matches. As the State Member, local newspapers are imperative in sharing information about community safety or new legis-

tices, real estate, classifieds, social events, sports and more.

4: I would say, please consider voting for me as the person, Anne Baker, as I am the one that will represent you. I have a proven track record and I will work hard for the electorate.

lation.

4: Every Queenslander placing their vote over the past couple of weeks and on Saturday will know exactly what is impacting them the most right now, whether it’s costs of living, crime, housing or accessing health services. These issues are not new and The LNP has outlined a plan and commitments to improve our health services, increase housing, address youth crime and ease cost of living.

Billionaire Businessman Slams Council

Anight of tourism industry celebration was briefly thrown into chaos when billionaire businessman and owner of Coral Sea Marina Resort Paul Darrouzet elected to use his platform to give an award recipient speech to slam Whitsunday Regional Council.

The Whitsunday Tourism Awards took place on Daydream Island last Saturday with 366 tourism representatives present to celebrate their successes and hopefully receive an industry award.

Paul Darrouzet was present on the evening to accept the Bob Porter Award for Outstanding Contribution By an Individual, reflecting his impressive work transforming what was Abell Point Marina into the multi-award winning Coral Sea Marina Resort we see today.

Standing on-stage to give his acceptance speech, Mr Darrouzet instead surprised the audience by embarking on an extensive dialogue that specifically criticised Council and Councillors.

His 15-minute speech caused a stir in the crowd, with some members of the audience feeling compelled to leave the room when he began criticizing neighbouring

townships within the region.

Whitsunday Regional Council are a major sponsor of the Whitsundays Tourism Awards and had recently announced an increase of funding toward the organisation, allocating $1 million, which is larger than any previous year.

The contents of Mr Darrouzet’s speech put a significant strain on relations between all parties.

Tourism Whitsundays offered the following statement on the matter:

“During the ceremony, we were proud to present the prestigious Bob Porter Award. We acknowledge that some of the comments made by the recipient do not align with the views of Tourism Whitsundays or the broader industry. We remain focused on the positive achievements and dedication of our tourism operators and stakeholders who contribute to the success of our region.”

Many people on the night remarked that they respected Mr Darrouzet’s right to hold such views but believed them to be quite divisive and that a night of celebration was not the correct platform in which to deliver it.

Thankfully, after the speech concluded Emcee Ben Southall was quick to resume proceedings and the night continued with the party atmosphere that was intended.

The evening was a credit to the hardworking Tourism Whitsundays team, and everyone enjoyed much merriment.

In the following pages of this newspaper you will be able to read Paul Darrozet’s entire speech from the night and also read

Whitsunday Tourism Awards

as he

accepted

the

Bob Porter Award for Outstanding Service to Tourism

“ Congratulations to all tonight’s winners, you are great ambassadors for our industry.Thank you to Tourism Whitsundays for this award, its really a credit to my staff and the hard work and effort they put into providing visionary customer service.

Tomorrow I Ieave for Tahiti whilst Joscelyn and her team leave for Fort Lauderdale to again speak with a number of Superyacht parties about visiting our beautiful part of the world in 2025/ 26. Dawn, also leaves in a couple of weeks for London and a series of meetings with top tier European inbound ITOs to reignite our customer base from this vital market which has still not returned to pre-Covid levels. This will hopefully continue our great run at attracting very high quality, high value, high yielding low impact customers to visit our region.

Whilst we work and strive, however our tourism industry and your business does not exist in a vacuum – we have the federal, state and our local government all making laws and policies to regulate our operational environment. That said however, the biggest influence on our business for all of us here at the beach is our local Council.

Just to bore you for a minute and to give you some context. In 2008, the state labour government forced our Council to amalgamate with Bowen. This resulted in 6 divisions with one Councillor elected from each - Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Proserpine, Strathdickie, Collinsville and Bowen. Since then, on almost every issue, Councillors from Proserpine, Strathdickie, Collinsville and Bowen (the gang of four) have voted in a block 4 – 2 and you better believe not for the benefit of our tourism business here at the beach.

They control all outcomes, all senior staff and all matters concerning Council, and none of them represent us here at the beach. This lot have been singularly responsible for some truly idiotic decision and proposals, such as burning $3 million getting into bed with a bunch of Chinese gangsters and proposing and supporting the development of a large oil shale mine between here and the airport.

None of this however comes anywhere near the gang of four most recent act of bastardry and stupidity, which was getting into bed with a Sydney developer, in receivership, to approve a massive high rise on our foreshore despite crushing the town plan, thousands and thousands of written objections from locals and not one submission of support.

These four Councillors and the mayor who voted and approved this monstrosity lived in Bowen, Bowen, Collinsville, Strathdickie and Proserpine – kilometres away from here, and in one case hundreds of kilometres away.

These four control our Council yet we did not vote for them. We cannot vote to remove them. We never see them and we do not know them.

They do not, and have never ever represented us, yet they prevent us having any control over our destiny. In short, as Peal Keating used to say of the Senate; Unrepresentative swill.

Rather than a poxy high rise on the foreshore. If Council possessed one ounce of morality it would buy the land back from their Sydney developer mates, bury the project and return the land to ratepayers as public open foreshore space.

This however would require moral fibre, and I am sure on this, and a number of issues Council is as free from moral fibre as a frog is from feathers. Our town should be a beautiful place for all of us to operate, a gorgeous beachside haven, like West Palm Beach in Florida, like Noosa, like Port Douglas or Palm Cove.

However, the reality is the complete opposite. Well, let’s look at reality – how would your or my business function if we invested nothing into capital upgrades?

The Shute Harbour end of main street has not had any capital upgrades in 46 years. The rest of downtown has had nothing spent in 11 years and yet with over 130 million of unspent capital in this Council’s budgetary account - how much was allocated last year, the year before and this financial year to upgrade Airlie Beach? You guessed it – nothing!

Millions for Collinsville. Main Street Upgrade $1.6 million, pool upgrade $1.4 million, footpaths, ancillary upgrades – $900,000 and then the cracker –Collinsville must be packed with literary genius as even through it already has a library the Council is setting aside $12 million for a new one – this puts the capital going into Collinsville by our Council this year alone at $15 million or to put it in perspective $10,000 for each and every man, woman and child or $25,000 per household, each of which household pays $1061 per year in residential general rates, - think how much you pay.

Oh, I’m told it’s for the miners. Well, let me tell you more miners live in Cannonvale than Collinsville, however that simply doesn’t wash with the gang of four who control our funds.

Bowen, $2million for new change rooms for a footy club that I’m told doesn’t have a team in a competition, foreshore lighting $900,000, new footpaths $900,000, Miller’s Lagoon $5 million. All this on top of the millions of your money spent on Flagstaff Hill now closed, boarded up and abandoned. Here’s the cracker again, Council have convinced the current labour state government to spend $68 million, yes $68 million, on a new fishing jetty and foreshore upgrade for Bowen.

Believe me this behaviour is not new and has been in evidence since 2008. What is left for us? Nothing.

We pay far more than our fair share to support a bloated inefficient bureaucracy with a culture of idolising average and idolising a process with no outcome.

Statement Of Response

From Mayor Ry Collins

Overall, what does Council think about Paul Darrouzet’s speech on Saturday night - what would Council like to say in response?

My Councillors and I welcome open dialogue and the chance for feedback from community members and business leaders and this can be done through multiple official channels to ensure a response from Council. A Tourism awards night celebration is not an appropriate forum!

As Mayor for just 7 months, I was extremely disappointed and saddened by the divisive and unfounded allegations presented on what was an evening to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our tourism industry. Disappointed that an award winner would use a tourism celebration platform for their own agenda and sad that our amazing tourism operators, who have worked so hard to rebuild after COVID-19, had their night overshadowed by these actions.

From the Collinsville Pit Pony outback experience to the Big Mango and amazing beaches and bays in Bowen, to the cane fields and barra fishing in Proserpine and the buzzing resort town of Airlie Beach and our 74 tropical islands, Council along with Tourism Whitsundays, has worked tirelessly to promote and develop the region. Our partnership has always been strong, and we remain committed to working together for the betterment of the Whitsundays.

Since 2008 Council has been split into divisions with a Councillor representing each division. What are the benefits of this? Do you have any plans to change it?

At present the Whitsunday Regional Council comprises of myself as Mayor and six Councillors who are each elected from individual divisions. Electoral Divisions allow for councillors to be truly local representatives (for their division), easily accessible to residents and more aware of local issues and contribute to ensuring that sectional interests are less likely to dominate the council. Councillors overriding responsibility is to the entire Council region.

In Queensland, local government areas are often large and diverse, which makes the choice between divisional and undivided councils significant.

Divisional councils tend to work better in areas with varied demographics and geographic diversity, where it’s important to ensure that smaller or rural communities have a representative voice. Undivided councils may be more suitable for smaller, more homogeneous areas where local issues are less varied, and a region-wide approach to governance is more effective. Each structure has its trade-offs, and the choice often depends on the size, demographics, and specific needs of the local

government area in question.

What do you say in response to the assertion that the 4 Councillors who live outside of Airlie/Cannonvale control the votes and the funding?

Council decisions are made through a democratic process, with each Councillor casting their vote based on the needs of their division and the broader interests of the Whitsundays.

Funding is not controlled by specific Councillors. All major funding decisions are based on merit, community needs, and strategic priorities for the entire region, not just one locality.

It was also asserted that there have been no capital upgrades in Airlie Beach in 46 years - is that accurate?

Airlie Beach Main Street has borne the brunt of the tourism industry success and growth that we have seen in recent years, especially post COVID. My Council has recognised this and has been actively working on maintenance and improvements while undergoing consultation and planning of a new overall Airlie Beach precinct plan for renewal and a long-term sustainable solution.

In recent years, Airlie Beach/Cannonvale has seen hundreds of capital upgrades, including almost $1 million in Airlie Main Street upgrades in the last 12 months alone. Our recent investment into tourism infrastructure and local community projects clearly demonstrate that Airlie Beach remains a key priority for Council.

Capital projects since the $20 million Airlie Beach Main Street upgrade was completed in 2013 include: $7 million Airlie Foreshore revitalisation, $60 million Shute Harbour Marina reconstruction, $20 million Airlie Main Street Upgrade, $35 million Cannon Valley Reservoir and pipeline to new reservoir, Whitsunday Water Security and Resilience Program and Treatment Plant, Coconut Grove movie screen and foreshore mega playground, Cannonvale foreshore upgrade , Welcome to Airlie sign, Starfish roundabout , Refurbishing of Airlie Beach toilet block, Refurbishing of Lagoon toilet block, Heart of the Reef sign and landscaping, Skate bowl in Cannonvale – Stage 1 & 2, Whitsunday Lakes Playgrounds, boardwalk and boardwalk lighting, Waterson Way carpark, Port of Airlie Terminal Upgrade, Shute Harbour Road – upper carpark extension, Ocean Road reconstruction, VMR pedestrian bridge, Woodwark Crescent stormwater relining, Cannonvale Transfer Station upgrade, Airlie Lagoon Deck, Airlie Foreshore Lighting, Campbell Creek embankment works, Shute Harbour lookout upgrade, Golf Views Court stormwater renewal, Airlie Beach bus stops, Airlie Lagoon shared path, Bicentennial Boardwalk stages 1 and 2 upgrades, Wambiri/Adina

St intersection renewal, Cannonvale entry sign, Beach Road drainage and footpath upgrade, Jubilee Pocket footpaths, Mandalay Road upgrade, Jubilee Pocket Road upgrade.

How does Council ensure all funding is spread equally across the divisions?

Council makes decisions for the whole of the local government area not just an electoral division, so all decisions are made in the public interest, for the community at large.

fragmentation and financial challenges as the entire region benefits from the current regional structure.

There is no process where the funding is distributed across the electoral divisions and the current services and levels of service provided by Council are made with the whole region in mind. How services are delivered or maintained can vary but is generally of the same standard no matter where you live or who is your representative councillor.

Funding for services and infrastructure needs are driven by a range of factors including asset management principles and the type and condition of infrastructure which are also impacted by past decisions and are influenced by time as a number of assets have long lives and require significant investment and ongoing maintenance funding.

Generally, the funding and services are spread equitably across the region over time which means more in some years than others but on average and over time this investment and the services delivered even out. There is no set formula for who gets what and where.

What would happen if our region was de-amalgamated?

De-amalgamation would likely result in a reduction of shared resources and the loss of efficiencies gained through unified governance. The amalgamation of divisions has allowed us to pool resources, leverage shared infrastructure, and present a stronger, united voice for the entire Whitsunday region. De-amalgamation could create

Some other issues raised on the night were - affordable housing for workers, high rise plans for the Foreshore and a carpark on Waterson Way – what would Council like to respond to this?

Affordable housing is a significant issue across Australia, and I have been proactive in actively working with both state and federal governments to explore solutions. Council ensures that all development proposals undergo rigorous consultation and planning processes to balance growth with community needs and environmental sustainability.

The Council at the time supported the 5 Star, 12 storey resort development at Airlie Beach, and the Planning and Environment Court agreed it was an appropriate development.

Anything else you would like to add?

Our Whitsunday region is an incredibly special part of the world, and my Councillors and I are dedicated to ensuring its prosperity for future generations.

I would like to welcome new Tourism Whitsundays CEO Tim Booth and my Council looks forward to working closely with Tim and his team.

As Mayor and only being in the role for 7 months my major focus is looking forward building a vibrant future for our diverse community. One Council, One Region , One Whitsunday.

A Sparkling Night Of Success And Celebration

“We want to ensure that every passenger has the best experience in their short time here,” Lyn shared.

Alongside winning the prestigious award it is also their 20th anniversary year:

“This was a very special present.

“We also greeted our millionth cruise ship visitor earlier this year!”

Lyn Blanche Woodham said the Cruise Ambassadors would like to thank the Whitsundays Regional Council for their ongoing support, and Tourism Whitsun-

days for all their practical help on a dayto-day basis, including Dea who goes above and beyond for the group.

Dea Huvonen, Visitor Services Manager at Tourism Whitsundays stated that people looking to enter the awards, should definitely do so:

“It is a beautiful and great way to showcase the fantastic work your team is doing the whole year long!”

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, the Volunteers Cruise Ship Ambassadors will celebrate their 20th anniversary at Shute Harbour Marine Terminal. All current and past stakeholders and volunteers are invited to join the festivities.

Cruise Whitsundays is proud to announce its Gold wins for Tourist Attraction and Unique Accommodation at the 2024 Whitsunday Tourism Awards, held at Daydream Island. These wins also mark Cruise Whitsundays’ induction into the prestigious Hall of Fame for Unique Accommodation, following three consecutive Gold victories in this category.

The Tourist Attraction award recognises Cruise Whitsundays’ iconic Reefworld Pontoon and the incredible experiences it offers, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. The Unique Accommodation award celebrates the exceptional Reefstays experience, which includes Reefsleep and Reefsuites, offering guests the rare opportunity to sleep under the stars or beneath the water, surrounded by the beauty of the reef.

General Manager, Renee Branton-Brown, emphasised the critical role of the team in achieving these awards.

“These awards are not just a recognition of our products but of the people behind them. The passion and dedication of our entire team are what truly make these experiences special for our guests. Whether it’s the welcoming guests on board, ensuring smooth operations, or the staff on the pontoons delivering memorable reef experiences, every individual plays an essential role in our success.

“I am incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. Our team has faced challenges, adapted, and continued to deliver exceptional experiences year after year. These

awards, and our induction into the Hall of Fame, are a testament to their hard work and resilience. I feel fortunate to lead such a talented group and look forward to what we’ll continue to achieve together.”

Sales and Marketing Manager, Liza Muller, reflected on the significance of these wins for both the business and the wider tourism industry.

“Winning Gold in these categories and being inducted into the Hall of Fame for Unique Accommodation is an incredible milestone for us, especially as we celebrate 20 years in this remarkable region. It demonstrates the value of what we offer in the Whitsundays and reinforces our commitment to consistently delivering exceptional guest experiences. This recognition solidifies our place as a leader in the region, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Liza continued, “We also want to acknowledge the effort that goes into the submission process. It’s no easy task, and it’s done alongside the demands of daily operations. We congratulate everyone who dedicated their time and effort, and a special congratulations to our fellow award winners. These awards truly highlight the talent and strength of the Whitsundays tourism industry. We’re excited to cheer on all the Whitsunday operators and businesses at the upcoming Queensland Tourism Awards!”

As Cruise Whitsundays celebrates its 20th year of operation in the region, these prestigious awards are a testament to the company’s enduring commitment to delivering world-class experiences at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

Time For The Kids At Children’s Week

Children’s Week 2024 began on Saturday, October 19. This annual celebration occurs around the fourth Wednesday in October and aims to highlight the rights and achievements of children.

The week serves as a reminder that all children deserve to enjoy their childhood. It encourages them to showcase their talents, skills, and abilities, fostering a spirit of creativity and self-expression.

Bowen is hosting an event on October 26th to celebrate the yearly event at the Soundshell.

The event will feature a free BBQ, along with a variety of exciting games and activities for families to enjoy. Communities across the country participate in events throughout this week, engaging schools, playgroups, childcare centers, kindergar-

tens, cultural organisations, libraries, and local community groups.

Children’s Week is celebrated at national, state, and local levels, shining a spotlight on the rights and achievements of children. Since 1996, the theme “A Caring World Shares” has served as a guiding principle for the week, reminding everyone involved in a child’s life of the importance of nurturing and supporting their development. This event promises to be a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the future of their children.

The quote of this year’s event reads: ‘Lets paint the world with smiles and laughter.’

Celebrating 150 Years of Supreme Court

Almost 50 people attended a special court ceremonial sitting in Bowen on Monday, marking the 150th anniversary of the supreme court in Bowen.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland Helen Bowskill facilitated the event.

“This is a special ceremonial sitting of the supreme court together with the district court and the magistrates court,” Mrs Bowskill said.

“We hold this ceremonial sitting to mark and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the supreme court here

at Bowen.”

President of the Queensland Law Society Rebecca Fogerty also spoke on the events significance.

“Queensland, unfortunately, is not known for its enthusiastic preservation of historic buildings, I am grateful that this courthouse, perhaps one of the more charming in Queensland remains,” she said.

“More visitors to the town centre can miss its commanding presence.

“In a literal sense many of us here today have spent our careers in and around courtrooms, more importantly, for many others in this community the course of

their lives have been shaped significantly by decisions made within these walls.

“This courthouse announces itself on the street scape to its presence and design as is a common feature of classical revival style, the straight lines and striking curves are symbolic of the hierarchs’ orders of the state reinforcing the legitimacy of its power.

“The use of concrete and stone connotes stability, discipline, social order, this is significant in a coastal location where most buildings from this era were made of wood.”

Mrs Bowskill concluded the ceremony by

thanking everyone in attendance.

“Thank you all again for coming along to this important occasion I hope that the collegiality of traditionary on display here is evident to all of you. I’m always, on any trip outside of Brisbane, warmed by the collegiality of the profession that is on display, more so than ever here in a true generational sense.”

“I hope the lawyers take the opportunity meet with some of the not so young lawyers because it’s a rare feat for you to meet some of the people who have plotted the course up here in the northern part of Queensland.”

Women vs Women Challenging vs Championing

We have been so fortunate to have been involved in Women’s Leadership programs for over five years, bringing groups of like-minded women together to build confidence, authenticity, resilience, emotional wellbeing and self-leadership.

It has been humbling to see groups of strangers lean in, share narratives and experiences that have shaped who they are today. Tackling self-awareness themes such as ‘Imposter Syndrome’, ‘Negative self-talk’, ‘The Confidence Gap’, and ‘The Comparison Trap’ these all-female groups have dug into some limiting self-beliefs and learned to overlay these with new neural pathways leading to more positive outcomes.

So, what have we learned through these sessions:

• Creating psychologically safe environments is imperative for women to share limiting self-beliefs

• These environments ensure no judgements, no consequences, just empathy, understanding and shared experiences

• How quickly women can feel support-

ed when they let their walls down

• By sharing narratives we start to ‘normalise’ our experiences and feel less isolated

• Women are truly resilient!

• It takes a support network to help us identify and explore our potential

• How quickly women can turn a challenging past experience into a belly-laugh within the company of other women

• Women who like to challenge (rather than champion) women do not thrive in these environments

Our finales for our women’s groups in both Mackay and Airlie Beach are drawing near and we would love for all women to join us for these panel events. The topics are: Mackay “The F!#k it 40s & 50s – the joy of not giving a f!#k”; Airlie – “Women vs Women: Challenging vs Championing”. We have some great speakers, head to our website for more details.

Ask An Expert With Whitsunday Chamber

How does my business impact my health and wellbeing, and vice versa?

During Queensland Mental Health Week (5-13 October), the Chamber hosted an event featuring the region’s Business Wellness Coach Kristy Wilson.

The Queensland Government has established a network of wellness coaches to provide free one-on-one support to small and rural businesses to address the impacts of health and wellbeing. The coaches have a background in business, combined with qualifications in social work or psychology.

Kristy believes the most common health issues business owners face are:

• Relationship issues predominately between couples working together, but also between business partners, or partners not involved in the business. The common cause is not creating strong relationship boundaries and time prioritisation and management, with impacts felt at work, home, and personal productivity.

• Stress presenting as fatigue, headaches, irritability, overwhelm, and depression due to business financial issues, lack of skilled staff or their availability, managing staff, drowning in administration, and dealing with client situations.

• Anxiety is a persistent and excessive worry that doesn’t go away even in the absence of stress. Symptoms include trouble concentrating or making decisions, irritability, heart palpitations, sleep disturbance, or feeling panicked and not being about to explain

why.

“We all react to stress in different ways. Taking the time to recognise any changes in yourself is very important not only for your wellbeing, but also your staff and your businesses success,” said Kristy.

Kristy’s top tips to business owners:

1. Seek professional help when you need it, be it financial or personal related. It’s always best to get on top of your challenges before they get on top of you.

2. Look after yourself, stress and burnout can present itself in a number of ways and if not managed effectively it might force you out of your business for a period of time or slow you up.

3. Manage your finances. Business finances and wellness are connected. Know your numbers, keep overheads low, and regularly review cash flow.

Break-even Points And Benchmarking

Accountants often educate their clients on their break-even threshold. Break-even points are relevant to all businesses – no matter their size.

So, why is your break-even point so important?

How can you decide on what price to sell your products, or services at, prepare a forecasting budget or write a business plan, if you do not know how many ‘widgets’ you need to sell to cover your costs and make money? This is your break-even point.

You may have a high turnover but still run at a loss, because your product or service is not priced high enough to make a profit. To make a profit, you need to understand the level of turnover you need to cover your operating expenses and make money.

You should aim to undertake regular financial health checks with your accountant, so you know your critical break-even point, ensure your business remains viable, make sure costs are realistic, and that you understand the turnover required to make a profit.

Benchmarking tools are also useful to measure key business metrics and practices and compare them to similar industry standards. Your accountant can then identify areas where improvements can be made and opportunities for growth explored.

Do you know what your break-even point is?

40 Social Life

The Airlie Beach Hotel’s Festival Weekender is fast approaching, and the artists lineup is stacked.

The Festival Weekender will take place from Thursday evening to Sunday afternoon and the acts will blow your socks off!

The weekend starts with an INXS tribute band titled ‘The Australian INXS Show’ and front man Dellacoma Rio is quite the character.

Then Lisa Hunt hits the stage during the Festival Weekender to add a touch of soul and Motown to the weekend.

Following Lisa Hunt is Bloom, she will perform all of your favourite rock classics.

After Bloom is headline act for the weekend ‘Bon But Not Forgotten’! They are a sensational AC/DC act and will bring an unprecedented energy to The Pub.

INXS TRIBUTE

‘The Australian INXS Tribute Show’ kickstarts Airlie Beach Hotel’s Festival Weekender, and wow, what a way to start!

Many people that regularly visit the Airlie Beach Hotel would have seen ‘The Australian INXS Tribute Show’ front man Dellacoma Rio, or if they haven’t seen him, they are bound to have heard some stories!

He loves crowd participation and entertained the local audience by running down the street with his microphone, jumping on a car and even hanging upside down in a tree.

Dellacoma’s band come back to Airlie Beach regularly, they call it their home and Airlie Beach Hotel is also the only pub they perform at nationwide.

Dellacoma Rio always delivers his best and says crowds can expect a show with lots of energy and passion.

The breathtaking performance will be on Thursday night, kicking off the Festival Weekender in perfect fashion.

LISA HUNT

On Friday night and Saturday afternoon Lisa Hunt returns to the Airlie Beach Hotel with her ‘Forever Soul’ show.

Lisa is renowned for her powerful voice and captivating performances.

During a previous performance at the Airlie Beach Hotel she performed in front of a massive crowd and she tore the roof down.

Her impressive career started when she sung at a gospel church and since then she has performed alongside some of the world’s best musicians.

She has shared the stage with huge artists including Eric Clapton, James Brown, Dionne Warwick, Brian May, Randy Crawford, Joe Cocker, Miles Davis and Andrea Bocelli.

She has also toured with Jimmy Barnes, Diesel, Radio Freedom, Zucchero, Ronan Keating, Macy Gray, Mouset, Delored O’Riordan, Tina Arena and many more.

Performing with so many talented artists has only made Lisa grow as a musician.

Lisa’s experience from sharing the stage with music legends and her powerful voice make her performance in the Festival Weekender, an absolute must see!

BLOOM

Taking to the stage right before the weekend’s headline act, Bloom will be performing rock classics including Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Divinyls and more. Bloom has performed in front of sold-out crowds across the country and in New Zealand too.

She was a semi-finalist on ‘The Voice Generations’ alongside her husband James Morley who is also coming to the Airlie Beach Hotel to perform in the headline ‘Bon But Not Forgotten’.

James describes his wife as “incredible singer” and we are incredibly lucky to have her performing at the Airlie Beach Hotel because she normally performs in sell-out theatres.

Due to her amazing voice Bloom can do anything she sets her mind to and with this performance she will be sticking with Rock n Roll hits.

She also released a solo album with her own material and that

went to number 1 on the iTunes charts.

Bloom certainly knows how to put on a show and it leads perfectly into the weekend’s headliner.

CELEBRATE AC/DC WITH ‘BON BUT NOT FORGOTTEN’

Originating in 2011 this band has had many members over the years including two former members of AC/DC.

It’s no surprise that when ‘Bon But Not Forgotten’ arrive at Airlie Beach they will strictly be performing AC/DC tracks.

They have been praised as the most natural sounding AC/DC act and band member James Morley said it is due to the entire band blending together.

“AC/DC sounds easy but it’s not easy to play. It’s all based around feel and the whole band has to gel and feel that thing at the same time,” he said.

“There are a lot of bands that go out there and do it and they sound okay, but to really replicate that pure energy and organic feel that ACDC has is it’s a pretty rare thing to have.”

Usually ‘Bon But Not Forgotten’ have one lead singer but during the Airlie Beach Hotel Festival Weekender, we are lucky and there will be two, Cynthia Gallie and Skenie.

James also said the performance will be fun and energetic for all.

“If there is some people there that aren’t dedicated AC/DC fans, they’re still going to know the songs and get into it because there’s something about ACDC, and it’s a great way to kick off a party,” he said.

“Come with a good attitude and have a good time.

“That’s really all it is, that’s it in a nutshell, just put a smile on your face, sing along, have a dance. That’s what we are bringing to Airlie and hopefully that is what everybody will do.”

An Interview with the College Principal, Mrs Kylie Langshore

Why are teachers so important to society, and how do they make a real difference in our community?

Teachers make other professions possible. They lay the foundation for every other profession, nurturing the minds and hearts that will shape the future. They don’t just teach lessons; they impart wisdom, values and inspiration, making them pillars of our community.

What makes the teachers at Whitsunday Christian College different, and what qualities make them so special?

The teachers at Whitsunday Christian College possess a genuine combination of faith, commitment, and love for both education and their students. They hold a deep sense of calling in what they do and go above and beyond to nurture not only the academic growth, but also the personal and spiritual development of each child. They partner with families and are driven by a desire to see each student discover their God-given purpose and potential. They seek to reflect Christ in what they do.

Whitsunday Christian College teaches a broad range of ages; how do the teaching styles change for the different ages? What is unique about the primary school and the secondary?

Across all age levels, the deep relationships our teachers build with students are central to the learning experience, allowing for individual guidance. In our Primary School, teachers use warmth, structure, and hands-on learning to engage younger children, building strong foundational skills. The focus is on nurturing curiosity, a love for learning and a sense of safety, as students begin their educational journey.

As students grow and enter Secondary School, the teaching approach shifts to

foster greater independence, critical thinking, and responsibility. Secondary teachers mentor students through the complexities of adolescence, helping them connect their learning to real-world challenges and their personal faith.

How do the teachers at Whitsunday Christian College intertwine the school’s values into the curriculum?

Our college mission is to ‘Educate for Eternity, Equip for Life.’ We provide a values-based education where faith, character, excellence, community, and service guide every aspect of learning, both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it’s exploring historical figures of faith, encouraging acts of service, building a sense of community, strengthening character, or fostering excellence through academic challenges, our teachers are dedicated to nurturing students through a Christ-centred worldview.

It is World Teachers’ Month; what would you like to say to your teachers to congratulate them?

To all our incredible teachers at Whitsunday Christian College, I would like to thank you and honour you for all you give, both the seen and unseen. You are more than educators; you are mentors, role models, and shepherds to our students. Your tireless efforts, creativity, and deep care for each child makes a difference. I see how you pour your energy, love, and faith into your classrooms each day, and I am deeply grateful.

While you may not always see the full fruit of your labour, you are planting seeds that will grow for a lifetime and into eternity. Your dedication and influence reach far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting legacy in the hearts of your students, families and wider community. Thank you for answering the call!

15-year-old local Noah Conyers has been competing in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Jiu-Jitsu since December 2020, and he is already challenging the adults at his gym, Whitsunday Martial Arts.

He has won the Central Queensland Championship for three years in a row and in December this year, he has the opportunity to go to Las Vegas, to compete in the World Championship.

Noah’s parents Ryan and Lauren are immensely proud of him for getting this opportunity to compete at this level.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for him, just to even go and compete, and to have a go at it,” said Lauren.

“We are so proud, he is so committed to his training, which is amazing.”

Noah is also extremely excited to get over to Las Vegas for the competition.

again come together to celebrate the sport in this incredible community. Until then, we encourage everyone to keep spreading the love of footy for fun and to carry the same spirit of camaraderie and joy with them throughout the year. The Whitsunday Cup continues to be a shining example of how sport can bring people together, and we can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds!

To help Noah get over there and do this trip Dan Zealand and Anton Zafir from Whitsunday Martial Arts have decided they will host a 36-hour Run Challenge, with 50% of the money raised going to Noah and another participant of the gym to get to the championships.

“Noah is an absolute pleasure of a student, he assistant coaches the youths’ classes, so, he gives back to the gym and it’s an absolute pleasure to be able to help him get

over there and do this,” said Dan.

“It’s a really good feeling knowing that we are trying to raise some money, not only for a charity, but also generate some money to help, to help Noah get over there because competing in another country, in the world championships, in your chosen sport, it is an awesome thing.”

Inaugural Healthy Kids Expo Inspires in the Whitsundays

Cannonvale State School was buzzing with excitement on Sunday, October 20, as it hosted the inaugural Healthy Kids Expo. The event, aimed at “inspiring, educating, and elevating” children and their families to lead healthier and happier lives, was a resounding success. Around 150 attendees were treated to a full day of interactive activities, workshops, and educational exhibits from a diverse range of health and wellness professionals.

The Expo brought together experts from various fields, including nutrition, naturopathy, chiropractic care, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology, fitness, yoga, and sustainability. Each exhibit provided hands-on demonstrations and practical advice for families on how to integrate healthier habits into their daily routines. From learning the importance of balanced nutrition to discovering fun and engaging ways to stay active, there was something for everyone.

Parents were particularly impressed by the array of activities designed to educate children in an interactive and engaging way. Kids were able to participate in yoga sessions, try out fitness challenges, and even explore the world of sustainable living through eco-friendly workshops.

Guest speakers delivered talks on topics ranging from strategies to limit social media to the benefits of proper posture and the importance of healthy nutrition. Local

businesses and health professionals also used the opportunity to connect with the community, offering free consultations and advice.

Organiser of the expo, Tim Oberg from Healthy Kids Project, said “With such positive feedback and high turnout, I’m hopeful this will become an annual event, continuing to inspire healthier living for years to come.”

Hard Cover Update and results

BOWLS

This past week saw a quiet period for work on our club’s hard cover due to a mix-up with obtaining the necessary permit to access the old Fire Station land. However, that didn’t stop our members from enjoying some social activities.

Our ladies represented the club at Sarina, while other members competed at the Proserpine Bowls Club. Back home, Friday afternoon saw the bar open for members, with Bar Manager Fiona Greener and Terry Clarke ensuring everyone was well taken care of.

The afternoon brought together many familiar faces, including Arthur and Liz McManus, John and Robin Brown, Tony Kelly, Rick Burnell, Duncan Smith, John Matterson, Merve Stewart, and Kila El Amarna, who shared the amusing tale of escaping a baby crocodile to join us. Ted Cullen, John McGregor, Bob Fenney, Bobby McMahon, and David Meiklejohn also enjoyed the

sociable gathering.

Work on the hard cover is set to resume next week, and we’ll keep you posted with updates. Be sure to check out the photo of Fiona Greener and Terry Clarke welcoming our Friday regulars!
