Editor’s Note

Hi Everyone,

Earlier this week I woke up at 5.30am, it was dark and a little chilly, but I’d made a promise to my partner and I was determined to keep it.

We roused my little boy and carried him to the sofa wrapped in his doona where we all snuggled and turned on the TV ready to watch history in the making.

Now dubbed ‘the greatest race in history’ the early start to the day did not disappoint.

We were quickly whisked across the world to the Olympics in Paris where long-term rivals Ariane Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan were about to compete in the 200 metre free-style finals.

For anyone who knows me well, they will know I am not a big sports fan despite coming from an entire family of sports enthusiasts who love football (or “soccer”) more than life itself!

This, however, did not stop me from being completely caught-up in the excitement of the race as we witnessed the two athletes battle it out for first place in a nail-biting finish that indeed changed history.

I believe the Olympics brings out the best in us and shows

what the human race is capable of if we leave battles to the sporting field rather than to religion or politics.

Watching these young athletes display winning character traits of camaraderie, modesty and raw emotion was amazing.

Knowing they had each trained for hours every day to prepare and beaten everyone in their respective hometowns, regions and states to come onto the world stage and dominate was truly inspiring.

What I loved most though, was how the event brought people together, whether in the stadium or on the sofa.

This week as I was helping to put this edition of the newspaper together, I was also reminded how well our own little community brings people together through sporting events and community celebrations.

Make sure you get involved, feel invigorated by the atmosphere of our local events!

A MOMENT IN TIME

New students and teachers at Cannonvale State School enjoyed a visit from the Zonta Club of the Whitsundays last week and learnt all about the school’s long-term connection with the organisation.

The connection with Cannonvale State School began over 25 years ago during Pam Graham’s tenure as Principal and Annie Lloyd Lewis’s as Vice Principal. Founding member Wendy Downs, along with other dedicated women, helped establish the Zonta Club of the Whitsundays, which has since become a vital part of the Airlie Beach community.

When Pam Graham sadly passed, the local Zonta Club provided the school with a quiet reading area in her honour.

After the new buildings were established, the quiet reading area became a corner of the new library with a comfortable chair and a plaque with a Dr Suess poem.

Marlene Reiffel, President of Zonta, mentioned that during their visit to the school, the acknowledgement they got was “top class,” and it was exciting telling the school about their long history:

“The principal was thrilled to hear some of the history and particularly Pam Graham’s little library and chair.”

Principal of Cannonvale State School, Nicholas Shirley, wanted to thank Zonta for their involvement:

“Zonta have been involved with our school for quite a long time and it was a true honour to hear their journey with Cannonvale SS.

“Thank you to the wonderful ladies at Zonta for their ongoing support of both our school and our community.”

Zonta are always looking for new members, if their story has inspired you, please email Marlene: marlene@cpq.com.au

Over 200 Compete In Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival

With the biggest professional field competing since the Cairns Ironman Triathlon the 24th running of the Coral Sea Marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival proved an outstanding success on the weekend.

Held in perfect weather conditions for racing and with record fields of over 200 competitors, the Olympic Distance Triathlon was won by Charlie Quin (1.52.33) in the men’s division and Richelle Hill (2.01.56) in the women’s division.

Richelle Hill, 2012 Olympian Radka Kahlefeldt, and Cairns Ironman winner Hannah Berry staged a titanic duel on the swim and bike with all leaving for the final 10km run leg together, but it was 22 yearold Hill who had the fresher legs to surge away and defeat Kahlefeldt by over 90 seconds with Berry another 2 minutes back in third place.

In an equally hotly contested men’s event Charlie Quin had the perfect hit out before representing his country on the international stage at the ITU Long Course World Championship in Townsville in a few weeks’ time, beating Steven McKenna by 90 seconds with Matt Burton filling the final podium spot.

Whitsunday Triathlon Club President and Race Director Michael Kimpton said

the weekend produced some amazing top class triathlon action with record numbers in the junior event on Saturday and also the Sprint, Enticer and Olympic Distance events on Sunday.

“What an incredible weekend of racing in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef and my heartfelt thanks to all our visiting athletes, local competitors, and everyone who made this event a record-breaking success,” Michael Kimpton said.

“We saw an outstanding turnout, with huge fields in all our triathlon and swim events, a true testament to the growing popularity and spirit of our triathlon community.

“Our swim Ambassador, Olympic legend Susie O’Neill and race MC and the Voice of Triathlon, Pete Murray both did amazing jobs and raised the profile of our event onto the state and national stage.

“The Coral Sea Marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon is growing as a race like no other and a true celebration of our vibrant community spirit and the stunning natural beauty of the Whitsundays.

“Together, we are building an event that will continue to grow and a weekend of swimming, riding and running that we can all be proud of.”

Three Men Rescued After Vessel Sinks Near Block Reef

Last Thursday night a multi-agency search and rescue operation successfully saved three local men who were out fishing when their 6.9-metre vessel began sinking near Block Reef, reportedly about 70 nautical miles offshore.

The men were rescued after a mayday call was received at 10:15pm. Water Police, Volunteer Marine Rescue Association Queensland (VMRAQ), and a civilian boat were all involved in the rescue operation.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) also received an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) activation at the same time with the same coordinates and dispatched the Cairns-based Challenger rescue aircraft along with two rescue helicopters

The Queensland water police, assumed coordination of the surface assets, which included the police vessel the ‘Damien Leeding.’

The helicopter dropped a life raft to the individuals at around 12:30am. The police vessel was about 45 minutes off at that time.

The boat sank at the time of the life raft being dropped, and the men had to swim and climb into the life raft.

They then stayed in the life raft for around 45 minutes until the police vessel was able to deploy its tender to collect them.

After collection, Senior Constable Damien Watts, stated that the men were “cold, they were very hungry, they were given some warm drinks so it was probably one of the best tasting cups of instant coffee they’ve ever had.”

“No injuries, I think they were very grateful to be saved,” Damien added.

“A great effort from all agencies involved, it was a timely deployment.”

Incidents like this serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of registering your EPIRB, ensuring your vessel is seaworthy, verifying that radios are functioning, and confirming that all safety equipment is onboard.

Cyclist Fatally Struck In Alleged Hit-And-Run

A69-year-old local male cyclist has died in an alleged hit-and-run incident at a Bowen intersection.

The rider was discovered deceased at the corner of Bootooloo Rd and Wheelers Ln on Thursday last week at 4:40am when a passing motorist found him. They had stopped to render assistance but, after realising the gravity of the situation, contacted 000.

Queensland Ambulance Services said the man sustained life-threatening injuries, and multi-system trauma.

Queensland Police Acting Inspector for the Mackay and Whitsunday District Jeremy Novosel added that the individual did not survive the initial impact.

Acting Inspector Novosel stated that the police have commenced an investigation, with the scene now under examination:

“It could be speed, it could be inattention, it could be a situation that is just purely an accident, but we have to factor all that into our investigation.”

“It’s a tragic incident, and we certainly expect that people involved in these sorts of accidents would remain on the scene,” he said.

Police are led to believe the man was a fitness cyclist, who embarked on his daily

ride, typically departing around 4:15 am.

The road is also a regular route used by cyclists.

Officers from the forensic crash unit in Mackay, “are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area between 4:15 and 5am this morning to contact police,” Novosel said.

The police are also appealing for the driver involved, or anyone with further information to come forward.

The type of vehicle is still unknown at this moment as investigators continue to look into the incident:

“The scene is still under examination and there may be items that are on the roadway or witnesses who might be able to provide information to police to lead to that information.”

Soldiers’ Un-Marked Graves Receive Headstones At Special Ceremony In Proserpine

Over 100 people attended the unveiling of headstones for un-marked soldiers at Proserpine’s Old Cemetery last Saturday 27th July.

Organiser of the event Lyn Burke said that Whitsunday Old Iron Restorers Car Club put flags and timber crosses up on the unrecognised soldiers’ gravesites every year.

This year, however, the community rallied together to give the soldiers proper headstones.

The Whitsunday Old Iron Restorers Car Club raised over $5000 for molds, concreting, and plaques and now the soldiers have the headstones they deserve.

Lyn said that it’s a relief to finally give the soldiers their headstones.

“One of them has been waiting 102 years for this and this is the crowning,” Lyn said.

“They all had military funerals and that’s where it ended, today we fixed that and now they have headstones like they should.”

Lyn expressed that she was emotional and also proud of her work.

“I can’t wait to send details to the War Memorial, especially about the one who’s been here 102 years,” she said.

Proserpine RSL President Jason Rateri welcomed the service and said “Some of these graves have remained unmarked and the guys have lied here for over 100 years without any marker for their place of rest, it’s a pretty sad indictment.”

“But I’m pleased to say that today that’s been rectified,” he said.

Special guest Colonel Boniface Aruma enthusiastically praised the individuals involved in this special event.

“As you know, in the military, everything we do is team orientated. It’s never about one person, he can’t achieve the task set forth if you operate as an individual,” he said.

“I really don’t have much to say this morning, apart from acknowledging those individuals that have gone behind the scenes to invest quality time and quality effort to realise this morning’s occasion.

“Without your selfless effort behind the scenes, we would not be sitting here this morning to witness this very significant occasion to represent again those that have gone beyond us to lay down the sacrifice.”

Fly Direct To Adelaide From Whitsunday Coast Airport

Pack your bags, and prepare for takeoff because from Sunday 1 September, the Whitsunday Coast Airport will offer a selection of brand-new Jetstar flights directly to Adelaide.

Confirmed earlier this year, the flights will take off on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday each week, with the introduction set to significantly boost local tourism in both the Whitsundays and Adelaide.

In celebration of the February announcement, a one-way sale saw fares available from $99 earlier this year, and Jetstar’s Executive Manager, Jenn Armor explained Jetstar’s excitement in offering the new route to customers.

“For the first time ever from 1 September 2024, flying between these two destinations will take just under three hours, continuing Jetstar’s mission to make travel more accessible with great low fares,” said Jenn.

cial Businesses for Whitsunday regional Council that owns Whitsunday Coast Airport, believes Jetstar’s new flight paths will open the region up to a brand-new market of travellers, and this debut has been a long time coming.

“The importance of developing new destinations is critical to the growth of the Whitsundays,” said Craig.

“We’ve relied on Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne traditionally for our interstate visitors but to be able to get Adelaide, South Australia with 1.3million people on three flights a week to the Whitsundays, conveniently, cost effectively and direct is significant.

“This will be an enormous boost for the region for tourism, mining and agriculture and it really is a strategically important route that has taken a long time to achieve, and we’re very excited for the first of September start and Jetstar has told us the load factors are very strong.”

A Minute With The Mayor Ry Collins

The month of August is celebration time in our Whitsundays as the focus switches from the outback fun of the Bowen River Rodeo to our seaside town of Airlie Beach for the Great Barrier Reef Festival and Airlie Beach Race Week.

Council is proud to provide sponsorship for both events as these annual celebrations not only showcase the natural beauty of our region, but also highlight the incredible community spirit that makes the Whitsundays such a special place to live and visit.

The Reef Festival is an annual homage to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders.

This year’s festival promises a spectacular line-up of events, from the colourful street parades to the awe-inspiring fireworks over the Coral Sea. It’s a time when our community comes together to revel in the beauty of our marine environment and promote its preservation.

Locals and visitors can look forward to enjoying live music, captivating art installations, and a variety of workshops aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for our

unique ecosystem.

The festival is a true reflection of Airlie Beach’s spirit, combining entertainment with education, and showing our commitment to sustainable tourism.

Hot on the heels of the Reef Festival, we have Airlie Beach Race Week. This iconic event draws competitors and spectators from around the globe, transforming our beautiful waters into a thrilling maritime theatre.

Race Week isn’t just about the races; it’s also about the camaraderie and community that form around this event with shoreside activities and vibrant social gatherings.

Both events provide a boost to local businesses, showcasing our Whitsunday hospitality and the unique experiences we offer to visitors.

The dedication of volunteers, sponsors, and organisers make these events possible, and it is their passion which ensures the continued success of both.

Let’s come together in August to enjoy, celebrate, and promote our beautiful region.

In 2022, RACQ CQ Rescue was called upon 638 times for various emergency situations, logging 1,147 flying hours, with the longest mission covering 936 km. Notably, 42% of these missions were in the Whitsunday region. This year, they’ve been chosen as one of the charities for the Mayor’s Charity Ball along side the Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network. Agriculture And Aquaculture Opportunities At Bowen State High School

Students from Bowen State High School are involved in two projects this semester with a focus on learning more about Aquaculture and Agriculture.

about future careers and opportunities in higher education.

HarvestEd is an online program facilitated by the Queensland Virtual STEM Academy and the University of Melbourne and is designed for students in Years 8 to 9 in North Queensland to build their knowledge of innovations in agriculture, to promote sustainability and to utilise the design thinking framework to understand local issues and generate possible solutions.

Four, Year 9 students from Bowen State High School have commenced the program with a 1-hour virtual lesson each Thursday.

HarvestEd QLD also includes a mid-point face-face workshop where facilitators will visit the school to meet participating students and to engage in activities to identify local agricultural challenges. The final phase of the program is a Marketplace Day at James Cook University in Townsville. Students will meet industry partners for networking, meet peers and other stakeholders, deliver project pitches to industry partners and embark on a tour of James Cook University campus to learn more

Bowen State High School is also partnering with the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence at Whitsunday TAFE to deliver the Certificate II in Aquaculture to Year 10 students. The aim of the program is to engage students in a certificate course with the possibility of securing employment in the aquaculture industry at the completion of the course.

Whitsunday TAFE offered an Aquaculture day earlier in the year for interested students of Bowen State High School and the students thoroughly enjoyed the handson practical activities during the day and learning about the skills and techniques required in the industry.

By combining a Certificate II with their Year 10 studies, students are able to complete their school studies with a qualification. Students are enjoying the flexible learning arrangements which sees them combining two days at TAFE and 3 days at school, rather than 5 days a week in the classroom. Students are completing their certificate course at the Whitsunday TAFE campus, as well as in the school’s newly refurbed Aquaculture centre.

Year 9 students, Sarah, Ella, Jacob and Olivia have enjoyed the start of the program and the opportunity to interact with other students and teachers virtually. Photo supplied

Local Kids Compete In Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival

The Coral Sea Marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival kickstarted last Saturday and a record number of 96 children took part in the Junior Triathlon.

Organisers Val and Michael Kimpton were thrilled with the event and the overall turnout.

“It was magnificent, tiring but a magnificent sight,” Val said.

A young boy named Attila was gifted the Encouragement Of The Year Award for his incredible efforts.

This award was the perpetual trophy in memory of Stirling Edwards-Bland, a keen local sports kid who tragically lost his life in a road accident some years ago.

A random draw was also held on the day and two lucky children were gifted with a brand-new bike.

There were no awards for the fastest times, the children were simply tasked with doing their best and all children that took part in the triathlon received a medal and a well-deserved bag of lollies.

Congratulations to all who participated in the challenging event.

The Immerse Art Installations are lighting up the Great Barrier Reef Festival again this year.

Scattered across the Airlie Beach foreshore and centered beneath the iconic fig tree, the streets of Airlie will come alive with stories from the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. While the installations are visible by day, the real magic happens at night with pieces illuminated from 6-9 pm.

Beginning in 2021 as a modest segment of the festival, this event has grown significantly and now stands as a major highlight that locals eagerly anticipate each year. The installation focuses on showcasing sculptured reef creatures and corals crafted from recycled plastic and marine debris. This project also features collaboration with indigenous storytellers from Yooribaya Cultural Experiences, who will also be presenting a traditional welcome, smoking ceremony, and dance as part of the festival’s opening ceremony, on Friday at 6:30pm at the Foreshore Stage in Fairy Tree Park.

You’ll be able to explore the exceptional immersive art pieces using a map on the festival website and onsite signage. This map not only guides you through the sea creature-themed installations but also in-

tegrates educational elements and the Indigenous names of the marine life.

Animated projections put together by Donna Maire Robinson, from the Immerse Artist Group Lantern Creations, will also be present at this year’s event. The signature animation will be visible on the wall of the nearby Heart Hotel.

The immersive art installations are brought to life by facilitator Margaret Burgess, alongside artists Anita Pender, Brigitte Peel, Liz Knight and Noemi Martinez, with creative direction by Margie Murphy.

After exploring all the dazzling light displays at Immerse Art Installations, dive into the excitement of Reef Trivia, hosted by the Coral Sea Academy. This special opening event for the festival will take place at the Coral Sea Marina Resort (South End) and will be an educational evening filled with marine trivia, combined with unbelievable footage and photos of wildlife and their unique behaviours.

Time To ‘Brighten’ Up The Night With Some Lantern Fun!

On Friday night, watch as hand-crafted lanterns illuminate the town with a vibrant sea of color. Enjoy the sight of children’s faces glowing with delight as they pass by.

The ever-popular event, is a festival highlight and festival organiser Margie Murphy, emphasised that the Coral Sea Marina Lantern Parade is “one of the signature events.”

The Parade departs from the The Garden Bar Bistro at Coral Sea Marina, bringing colour and light along the Bicentennial Boardwalk, past Sorrento’s Restaurant and Bar and along the foreshore at Fairy Tree Park Main Stage where the Welcome to Country and Traditional dance will commence.

This year, the festival has introduced an all-new exciting element for the Lantern Parade, elevating the event to new heights.

Titled “Light Up the Reef,” this year’s hand-printed lanterns are inspired by the vibrant and colorful life of the Great Barrier Reef. Participants are encouraged to bring along their lanterns and showcase them in the parade.

Once the parade arrives, the reefthemed printed lanterns which have been carefully made

by hand, will form an entry to the Airlie Beach foreshore. The art installation and community lanterns will work side by side to create an ethereal space for festival attendees to explore and enjoy.

Prizes will be available for best Lanterns on the night in both the adult and kids’ category for the most colourful and the most creative.

There are no registrations for this event, just come along to the meeting spot, and hold your lanterns proudly as the beautiful colours of our Great Barrier Reef emerge.

Rotary Street Parade: Turning Heads And Wheels!

Long before the Great Barrier Reef Festival was established, the iconic Rotary Club Street Parade had already become a vital part of Whitsunday culture and is now a key element of the festival.

There will be fun for all the family showcasing the creativity of the region’s best businesses, schools, community groups and dancers.

The parade’s theme this year is ‘Above and Below,’ which is open to interpretation by institutions, but aligns with the festival’s reef theme.

The GBRF is a non-for-profit community event run by volunteers?

The whole community will get involved tomorrow in the Rotary Street Parade

plays, singing and, of course, lots of lollies.

Saturday Street

The traffic of Airlie Beach Main Street will come to a halt on Saturday, for an action-packed day of colourful community events that will take over the town.

Starting with the sound of engines, the Revvin the Reef car show will dazzle spectators, with Hot Rods, Muscle and Classic Cars. Car enthusiasts from all over the region are ready to show off their unique vehicles.

Attendees will channel their inner retro enthusiasts, dressing in their finest 50s and 60s attire while enjoying classic tunes from the era.

Following shortly after athletes, local runners and anyone brave enough will be warming up for the Coral Coast Fire Magic Mile, as the streets of Airlie are transformed into a racetrack. Be an onlooker and cheer on the runners as they race past you, or why not register and participate yourself?

Organiser of the Great Barrier Reef Festival, Margie Murphy stated that she is really looking forward to seeing everyone’s creations this year:

“We are really excited about the amount of business registrations coming through, and can’t wait to see what they will produce.”

Around 25 entries have been recieved so far this year, but organisers expect the event to be even bigger and better than previous years.

The parade allows both children and adults to enjoy dressing in vibrant, homemade ocean-themed outfits.

Alongside the bright and fabulous outfits, there will also be numerous luminous dis-

Festival attendees are invited to line the streets whilst waving to the floats as they pass by, and enjoy the spectacular atmosphere, while keeping a safe distance from the vehicles.

Green Waves Ahead: Whitsunday Escape Recyclable Regatta!

Ahoy! All aboard for sustainability. Hoist your sails, grab your ores and get ready for the Recyclable Regatta. Set to be a day of environmental fun, full of competition and creativity.

The Recyclable Regatta is one of the festival’s favourite events that brings the community together.

The rafts, which are created by recyclable materials, including bottles, plastic pipes, crates and more are prepared ahead of the event.

While rafts must be made of recyclables, any type of oar or paddle can be used during the event. Previous years have seen some great entries and 2024 is shaping up to be a great competition.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, teams will race from Airlie Beach around a buoy and back to the finish line on the foreshore, creating an exhilarating display for spectators.

Organiser, Beth Sutherland, says she is most looking forward to seeing the kid’s excitement on the day:

“Seeing the kids showing off their creations and getting the boats across the finish line still in one piece is no easy task, that’s the most exciting bit for sure.”

All crew members in the raft must cross the line to complete the race.

This year, there has been an increase to 4 divisions: Children aged 6-12 and 13-17, Adults 18+, and local businesses.

INXS: A Night of Classic Rock Reverence and Revival

Returning to Airlie Beach for the 13th time to perform, is Australia’s number one touring INXS tribute INXS “REVIVED” staring frontman Dellacoma Rio.

Dellacoma Rio and the band are gearing up and getting excited to come and play at Airlie Beach Hotel:

“We’ve got a very, very high energy show. Airlie Beach is one of only two hotels that we play in Australia, everywhere else we play performing arts centers, theater and festivals.”

“Airlie Beach has become a bit of a second home; they saved us a bit through COVID.”

INXS “REVIVED,” has six members, and all of them are full time musicians, except their keyboard player who owns a Laundromat.

The band was formed a decade ago by original member and guitarist Rob. Over the years, the lineup evolved, with most of the current members joining around six years ago.

“It is an opportunity to play these songs and then play them in a way that we feel like INXS would be playing them if they were still playing,” he added.

The bands favourite songs to play are ‘Never Tear Us Apart,’ and they generally end their performances with ‘Don’t Change,’ which Dellacoma says is a lot of fun.

The band has had several highlights over the years, but two distinct ones were the opportunities to play in Darwin and Alice Springs, alongside playing in Noosa for the second time, and selling out both times.

Dellacoma and the band reflected back on their wildest concert memory, which took place at a festival in Oklahoma 10 years ago. Despite a tornado and torrential rain, a day before, the festival went ahead. The skies cleared but the rain had soaked the ground.

“There was no one up front of the stage, it was just a mud pit, so, during a guitar solo, I jumped off stage and slid on the mud up to the audience on a big belly slide,” Dellacoma reminisced.

While Airlie will be a whistle stop tour for the band, Dellacoma stated how it’s always fun at Airlie Beach. He added that whilst he, himself, lives in Queensland, the rest of the band are excited to get out of the cold weather in Melbourne.

Dellacoma also explained that he loves seeing locals amidst the holiday-goers: “It

is pretty cool to see some of the same faces.”

Having played in the big cities and regional areas, Dellacoma Rio and the band find that there is something special about playing in the smaller towns:

“Regional areas generally are a lot more grateful to have you there.”

“You can get lost in the shuffle in the big cities, because there’s always entertainment, not just music, but you’re also competing with sports and bigger concerts, but regional areas, you can actually get into the heart and soul of Australia.”

INXS have an amazing show set for Airlie Beach with full video production that goes the entire time and legend has it, that Dellacoma Rio likes to jump on cars driving by, so if you are in town make sure you roll down your window to see if he comes by.

“It’s going to be good coming home, back to our second home.”

Bowen Lighthouse Walk Happening This Month

During winter, only once or twice a year, a special day occurs when the tides are low enough for people to walk to Bowen’s Lighthouse.

This year Ingham resident Mary Brown is travelling down from Ingham to complete the walk alongside her family.

This walk is special Mary not only because of the rarity of the tide, but because her mother grew up on Bowen’s lighthouse island.

“There’s just a bit of connection there that I really like, and I want to do that walk desperately,” said Ms Bowen.

“I think it’s fantastic, it’s sensational the concept of being able to walk at low tide twice a year over there.

“I never had the opportunity to come with mum, and I actually haven’t been to the lighthouse yet”

Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business, Leanne Abernethy, said the annual ‘Walk to the Lighthouse’ is a great activity which happens each year in Bowen.

“We only recommend you walk when the lowest tide is below 0.2m, this is to ensure

Impressive Performances by Local Competitors at Weekend Events

This past weekend, the Airlie Beach Triathlon witnessed remarkable performances from our local athletes. Among the competitors were Don Algie, Lucas Korosec, Roxie Groom, Zane Clayworth, Matilda Nicholes, and Penelope Shields. Demonstrating their determination, Don Algie and Lucas Korosec both secured third place in their respective age divisions, marking a significant achievement for the duo. Don Algie also went on to secure second place in the 350m Open Water Swim.

Millie Groom delivered an outstanding performance, placing second in the 750m Open Water Swim, competing against seasoned open water swimmers. Millie also went on to secure first place in the Enticer Distance Triathlon.

After the events, the competing Cannons were treated to a personal session with former Olympian Susie O’Neill. The Australian champion shared invaluable tips on training, racing, and maintaining a positive mindset, leaving our athletes inspired and motivated. A big thank you to Susie

for taking the time to meet with our young swimmers.

In another display of local talent, seven swimmers traveled to Townsville to compete in the Gardens Short Course Meet. Representing the Cannons were Tora and Harris Delac, Andie and Dylan Reynolds, Ruby and Koa Harland, and Thomas Ganter. Their participation in this event underscores the dedication and competitive spirit of these local swimmers.

As we celebrate these achievements, we are also eagerly anticipating our first club night on Wednesday, August 7th. This event officially marks the start of our 2024/2025 swimming season, and we look forward to our swim community coming together to support our athletes. Club Nights are a great opportunity for our swimmers to test themselves in a fun, low-stress environment. Operating like a real swim meet, they allow swimmers to become familiar with the meet environment and see how all their training is benefiting them with improved times.

Proserpine Veteran Golf

On Tuesday, July 23rd, 23 dedicated players braved an early start and travelled to Home Hill for the Whitsunday Group game. Despite the forecasted chilly morning, the day soon warmed up, though a brisk and blustery breeze presented an additional challenge. The dome-shaped greens added extra difficulty, with the wind making it even harder to keep the ball on target.

Despite these challenges, several players delivered commendable performances. The dome-shaped greens proved tricky, with balls often rolling away from the hole or veering off course due to the wind. Nonetheless, the players persevered.

Results:

Ladies: In a field of 22 players, Kathryn Borer finished in 2nd place with an impressive 36 points, just one point behind Carol Betteridge. Beryl Nosworthy secured 4th place with 34 points, while Vickie Wallace came in 6th with 31 points. The
