AHi there to our lovely readers,
I don’t think I could ever fill the shoes of Amanda as she does such an amazing job, but rest assured, all going well, she will be back very shortly!
I’d like to start off by introducing myself if we haven’t crossed paths already at recent events.
I’m Hannah the cadet journalist with Mackay Life Newspaper, and what I love most about my job and working with this paper, is that we all have a great love for our community.
I was born in Melbourne but I now call Mackay home after living here for over 16 years. For one…it’s too cold down in Victoria… and two, you just don’t get local community love like you do here in Mackay.
Sure, there’s good and bad people everywhere, but working for this paper has truly shown me how amazing this community is.
Each week we easily find a good deed story to place right next to this editor’s note, we have so many
amazing fundraisers happening, like the recent Mayors Charity Ball that raised over $80,000 for the Grapevine Group and Australian Street Aid Project (page 5).
Not to mention the unbelievable local talent that never fails to amaze me and the exciting upcoming events like the Family Fun Day at BB Print Stadium on this Sunday to raise funds for our local hospitals (page 9), as well as a live performance from Pierce Brothers (page 20) and so much more.
Recently we received the ‘Best Free Newspaper Award’ at the 2024 Queensland Country Press Awards, along with two other amazing achievements across our three community papers, and while that’s a remarkable accomplishment, our biggest thanks go to you, our readers, for supporting us and allowing us to share YOUR remarkable stories.
Thank You & Stay Blessed!
n anonymous member of the local community took to a neighbourhood crime page on Facebook, not to report an incident, but to express her heartfelt gratitude.
The focus of her message was directed towards a family wearing orange hi-vis attire and the manager of the Ooralea McDonald's, both of whom came to her aid when she unexpectedly fell ill around 8:30pm the previous Sunday night.
In her post, the anonymous individual conveyed profound thanks, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused by her sudden illness. She emphasised that her condition was not contagious but rather a reaction to medication following her release from the Mackay Base Hospital.
Her gratitude extended beyond words, with an eagerness to know the names of those who helped her, so she could personally extend her appreciation.
Despite the option to turn away, they chose compassion, a gesture she valued immensely.
Her post radiated with a sense of humility and genuine appreciation, which then lead to an outpouring of positive reactions from readers on the platform.
The anonymous poster said “I can't thank you enough, I had just been released from the Base and unfortunately wasn't as well as they and I had assumed.
“I feel so terrible that the situation even occurred, but I would love to know your names to gift you for your help,” she expressed.
“You didn't have to help me and could have turned away, but you didn't and I appreciate it more than you will ever know.
“Thank you so much for the concerns, I really hope this gets to the people who helped me.”

Bringing It Home For The Region
Continued from page 1.
Representatives from Life Publishing Group were thrilled to bring home three accolades at the Queensland Country Press Awards on Friday night, the win however was bittersweet, with Mackay Life Editor Amanda Wright unable to attend having recently received a cancer diagnosis.
Despite this, Amanda said it really lifted her spirits to receive the news of the three awards from her hospital bed where she was recovering from bowel surgery to remove colon cancer.
“It was an emotional and uplifting moment during one of the most challenging times of my life,” she expressed.
“My cancer diagnosis has been an incredibly tough journey, filled with fear, uncertainty, and pain.
“But to have a nurse on hand at Mackay Base Hospital to hear with me that our newspaper has been honoured in such a significant way brought tears to my eyes, and she gave me an enormous hug.
“It was a profound reminder that I have so much to live for and many more celebrations are yet to come, as well as recognition of the im-

portance of our work and the impact we have on our community.”
Amanda was diagnosed with Colon Cancer in April and, following a successful operation, she is about to begin intensive life-saving treatment.
Editor of Mackay Life Newspaper since its inception, Amanda’s talent, passion and personality is etched on every page of this newspaper – her stories are renowned for being compassionate, inspiring and engaging.
This was the third year in a row that Mackay and Whitsunday Life had attended the Queensland Country Press Awards, and Amanda was present at the previous two.
As such, it was a real honour for the team to receive the awards in her name, especially the award for Best One-off Commercial Feature which she had personally written.
Amanda said winning an award for the Fergus Builders Special Feature showcases the quality editorial and advertising we deliver right here in Mackay.
Rebecca Douthwaite, owner of Mackay and Whitsunday Life Newspaper and the broader Life Publishing Group, said she understands the value these features

bring to the community.
“Big businesses come to us to celebrate big events such as their birthdays, milestones and rebranding, they do that because we involve everybody in their business, and we get everybody excited about it – we are very passionate about running corporate features and obviously very good at it!” she expressed.
Amanda agrees, saying all three awards are a testament to the team's passion and hard work.
“They are a source of immense pride,” she shared.
“They represent in a tangible way our unwavering commitment to delivering quality, free news to our readers and giving businesses a powerful advertising platform.
“And of course, taking out the big state award of Best Free Newspaper of the Year means more to me and the team than words can express, especially those who have been here since Mackay and Whitsunday Life's inception almost four years ago.
“I still remember our very first photo shoot in Queens Park, with the headline PRINT IS BACK! And look at us now.”

A Pledge Against Domestic Violence From Mackay Regional Council
The Council's elected members took a firm stand against domestic and family violence last week when Mayor Greg Williamson emphasised the community's rejection of violence, highlighting a commitment to proactive measures for change.
“Not now, not ever” was a pledge that was taken last Wednesday by council’s elected members.
The pledge was signed to highlight Council’s collective stance against domestic and family violence (DFV) within the community.
Mayor Greg Williamson said violence in any form had no place in our region.
“The statistics are alarming, and we don’t want our community to be part of them any longer,” Mayor Williamson said.
“Council has taken this pledge today to highlight the continued commitment to leading through action to create change in our community and workplace,” he said.
“It’s not just a pledge but part of a wider internal campaign to support our employees, which includes reviewing and updating the current DFV policy and e-learning modules.”
Council is also a proud supporter of the Red Rose Foundation which aims to elim-
inate domestic and family violence related deaths.
One of the key initiatives of the foundation is the Red Bench project that works with Councils across the nation to install red bench seats as a constant reminder of the effects of domestic violence in communities. Council has now supported the installation of eight red benches in the Mackay region.
Each May, Queensland observes Domestic
and Family Violence Prevention Month (DFVP Month) to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence (DFV).
The goal is to send a clear message that DFV in families and homes will not be tolerated.
This important initiative aims to educate,
support, and empower individuals and communities to act against domestic violence.

A GALA FOR GIVING
The 2024 Mayors Ball wasn’t just a glamorous affair but a rallying point for local charities, thanks to the generous support of sponsors and ball-goers. With a resounding spirit of community, the event successfully raised crucial funds to uplift organisations such as the Australian Street Aid Project and Grapevine Group.
Mackay Regional Mayor, Greg Williamson said that “The main goal of the Ball is to support local charities, who are sometimes overlooked by state and federal funding but are in desperate need of funds.
“This year’s funds have been split equally between Australian Street Aid Project and Grapevine Group, with each receiving $40,117.59.
“Grapevine Group will use the funds to help local businesses have their own inhouse safeTALK Trainers on staff to train more locals in suicide prevention.
“Australian Street Aid Project will use their funds to help support people experiencing
homelessness in the Mackay region.
“This event keeps going from strength to strength each year and that is thanks to our organising committee, which includes representatives of the community, council and the MECC, our generous corporate sponsors, and our community.”
The funds were announced and officially presented to representatives of Australian Street Aid Project and Grapevine Group at a council morning tea on Wednesday, May 22 to thank all sponsors. Sponsors were also presented with certificates of appreciation for their support.
Platinum partners for the 2024 Mayor’s Charity Ball included long-term sponsor DGH Engineering, Fergus Builders and Daly Bay.
Gold sponsors were Allure Laser and Skin Studio, Key Solutions Group, BMA and Champ Group.
Silver sponsors include Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure, Southern Cross Industrial Group and new sponsors CQ Soil Testing and Pentacon.
Fallout Of Funding Cuts
For Rural Communication Networks
The Government's decision to halt future funding for the Mobile Black Spot Program and other crucial regional communication initiatives has raised major concerns among regional communities and rural areas.
Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox, highlights the consequences that communities could face without mobile connectivity, especially in emergencies, due to the Government’s lack of funding for other key regional communications infrastructure programs
Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox, said the axing of the Mobile Black Spot in 2026/27 is a major blow for regional communities, with zero dollars allocated for 2027/28.
“For the people of Dawson, there are whole communities that do not have access to mobile connectivity, and some people have to leave their home just to get reception.
“In 2024, how is this good enough? This isn’t just so people can call friends and family for a chat, we’re talking about real life emergency situations where people are getting stranded.”
The Government has also cut funding for the Better Connectivity Plan for Regional and Rural Australia, which covers funding for a range of programs including on-farm connectivity and the Regional Tech Hub.
“It’s no wonder that people in regional Australian communities are feeling isolated.
“It’s no surprise that the Auditor-General is carrying out an investigation into Round 6 funding of the Mobile Black Spot Program and we look forward to the report later this month.
Funding for the Better Connectivity Plan will more than double in the lead up to the election from $101.8 million in 2023/24 to $228.4 million in 2024/25. Funding for the Mobile Black Spot Program will nearly triple ahead of the poll day, from $17.5 million in 2023/24 to $45.9 million in 2024/25. But all three programs receive zero funding in 2027/28.
“Improving connectivity for people in both the bush and those living on the outskirts of major cities is critical and shouldn’t be at the whim of the governments political strategy,” Mr Willcox said.

Northern Beaches Community Hub Underway A Team You Can Trust
The Northern Beaches Community Hub stage 1B will soon be underway after Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox recently announced a $15m funding boost to kickstart the initiative.
CA Architects for Mackay Regional Council have already completed the Design work for stage 1B, showcasing plans of the dynamic public facility that will include a library, meeting rooms and café.
This funding allocation, made possible through the Australian Government's Growing Regions Program, coincides with the ongoing construction progress of the initial stage of the Northern Beaches Community Hub.
Mayor Greg Williamson said the Northern Beaches Community Hub, located opposite Mackay Northern Beaches State High School, was one of council’s signature projects.
He said Fergus Builders had made good progress on construction work for stage 1A after being awarded a $10.2 million tender for this key piece of infrastructure.
“The first stage, which is under way, includes an undercover multi-purpose court and storeroom, nature play and picnic spaces, as well as landscaping, pedestrian links, and a parking area.”
Mayor Williamson said construction of the first stage started in March and is scheduled for completion in May 2025, weather permitting.
He said council’s project team had been working with CA Architects to progress
design work for the next stage so it could be shovel-ready for government funding opportunities.
“This is an extremely important project for the Northern Beaches, which is our region’s fastest growing area in terms of population.
“A lot of community consultation, including community and agency reference groups, have helped shape the vision for this site.”
Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox believes the hub is going to be a “vital piece of infrastructure to support the expanding population within the northern suburbs of Mackay.”
“The Northern Beaches Community Hub will provide a local meeting place for the community to connect, and will deliver a range of activities, programs, services, and events tailored to the needs of the Northern Beaches Community,’’ he said.
“Being able to announce funding for stage 1B of this project is a huge win for the area and ensures we see this project continue.”
Stage 1A of the project is partly funded by the Australian Government and Mackay Regional Council.
The Australian Government committed $6.5 million towards stage 1A, with council contributing the remainder of the cost of the works.

There’s “Something For Everyone”
Without the helping hand of the community’s beloved volunteers, the region just wouldn’t be the same. In honour of the recently passed National Volunteer week (20-26th May), volunteers from all walks of life were acknowledged for their countless devotion and whole-hearted assistance, but the recognition doesn’t stop there.
The upcoming 2024 Mackay Volunteer Expo showcases the inclusive nature of volunteering and promises to offer “something for everyone”.
From emergency service personnel to comedic performers, street chaplains to crime stoppers, wildlife carers to choir singers and everything in between – more than 40 groups will be featured at the Expo, ready to showcase the hundreds of roles that are on offer.
The Expo will be held this Sunday, June 2, from 9am to noon, at the Big Shed in the Mackay Showgrounds.
Case Study
At The 2024 Mackay Volunteer Expo
Mayor Greg Williamson said the National Volunteer Week theme of “something for everyone” was perfectly aligned with the goals of the Mackay Volunteer Expo.
“We love that this expo showcases that no matter what you’re interested in, what your skill levels are or what your level of ability is, there is a volunteer role to suit you,”
Mayor Williamson said.
“If you have a sense of adventure and love the great outdoors, then there are groups like the Scouts, Surf Lifesaving, SES and even Pioneer Catchment and Landcare,” he said.
“If you are an animal lover, then there are groups like Australian Wildlife Rescue, Happy Paws Happy Hearts, Mackay Animal Rescue Society and RSPCA Mackay.
“Or, if you have more specific interests, there are tremendous opportunities with Mackay Musical Comedy Players, With One Voice Community Choir, Orange Sky
Australia, the Incredable Tip Shop and even Mackay Gridiron Association.
“A volunteer role is an amazing way to learn new skills, build a resume, make friends, feel good and stay active.”
State Emergency Services Local Controller Sarah Lethbridge said one of the biggest advantages their volunteers found was the training provided.

Recent statistics show a gradual but persistent improvement in volunteering rates post-COVID-19. While the proportion of individuals engaging in formal volunteering has risen to 32.6%, it remains below pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, the average number of volunteering hours has decreased, with volunteers dedicating an estimated 151 hours on average. On record, women seem to exhibit a higher likelihood of volunteering compared to men, with 34.1% of women and 30.8% of men contributing their time in 2023.
These findings represent the ongoing resilience of current volunteerism amidst evolving societal challenges, highlighting the importance of continued support and community involvement for generations to come.
Enhancing productivity and sustainability through innovative irrigation management.
is confident that improved irrigation management supported by automation, decision support software and upgrades to infrastructure are contributing to increases in productivity and profitability, while mitigating nutrient and chemical losses.
Due to a challenging farm layout, Peters historical irrigation systems were unable to supply enough water to meet crop demand while being labor and energy intensive. He set out on a ten-year journey towards improving irrigation infrastructure, initially installing additional underground pipes to improve operational efficiency.
In 2021 Peter joined the Mackay Whitsunday Water Quality Program and in partnership with CANEGROWERS Mackay, Peter has been working toward optimising energy consumption and water use efficiency of his irrigation systems.
Under the Mackay Irrigation Project, Peter is now able to use his mobile phone to start and stop pumps, saving valuable time. The addition of
moisture and soil probes has given Peter the ability to collect data on the plant’s available water down the soil profile, and decision support tools help to interpret data which Peter then incorporated with his own on farm experience, overtime learning and improving productivity.
This investment in irrigation has resulted in an increase in the yield of sugar per hectare while also improving incorporation of inputs, contributing to important improvements in water quality flowing through to the local creeks and waterways.

Crush Delayed By Ongoing Pay Dispute
As New Proposal To Be Put To Workers
Growers have been informed of delays to the sugar production season
The 2024 sugar production season will be delayed after a meeting with the Fair Work Commission on Tuesday, May 28 was unable to resolve an ongoing pay dispute between Wilmar Sugar and Renewables and its employees and union representatives.
A Wilmar Sugar and Renewables spokesperson confirmed the company is in the process of notifying growers of revised start dates, which, across Wilmar’s four regions, represent total delays ranging from two to nine days.
“Industrial action has already impacted our 2024 sugar production season, with work stoppages over the past two weeks forcing us to further delay the start of production at a number of our factories,” the spokesperson said.
Both Proserpine and Plane Creek Mills have been given a revised start date of June 20, with a total delay of nine days so far.
“These start dates may push back even further if planned industrial action proceeds,” the spokesperson said.
Following Tuesday’s meeting, Wilmar Sugar and Renewables informed the Fair Work Commission that it would put a fresh proposal directly to employees covered by the enterprise agreement in a ballot planned for Monday, June 10.
Wilmar outlined a new EA package that included a $1,500 sign-on bonus (inclusive of superannuation), permanent jobs offers to 50 fixed-term and seasonal employees, and a $20 a week allowance for employees utilising an electrical licence.
The Commission is expected to report
back on the outcome of the ballot and any other developments on Friday, June 21.
A similar offer was taken to ballot in December last year, which was comprehensively rejected by workers, with Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) Northern District Secretary Jim Wilson calling the new offer
“a slap in the face to every worker”.
The ballot comes after what Mr Wilson described as an attempt to find a middle ground with Wilmar as workers put forward an ask of an 18% pay rise over three years – a 7% reduction from workers’ original ask of 25%.
“We did that in an attempt to get this resolved and not cause delays to the crush, but Wilmar weren’t interested, they’re just putting out the same agreement,” Mr Wilson said.
“We are not asking for the world in terms of a pay rise, we just want our members to be compensated fairly for the work they do at a time where Wilmar is making record profits.”
Mr Wilson confirmed that industrial action will continue as of yesterday, Wednesday May 29 in the form of rolling stoppages and work bans across all mills.
“We have written to employees confirming that they will not be paid for periods when they are on strike, or where partial work bans mean they do not perform their full work duties,” the Wilmar spokesperson said.
“We are grateful to employees who continue to work on completion of essential works ahead of the start of production.”
Hemp Leader Welcomes Law Reform
Recent law reforms by the Queensland Government have been by Australia’s foremost breeder of industrial hemp seedstock.
Hemp Farms Australia CEO Lauchlan Grout said “good sense” had prevailed when MPs passed the amendments to the Drugs Misuse Act on April 18.
Queensland’s Agriculture Minister Mark Furner introduced the changes, saying they support the continued growth of the state’s industrial cannabis industry.
“The bill will support the industrial cannabis industry in Queensland by clarifying that industrial cannabis seed may be supplied to a seed handler,” he said.
“The amendments also establish a power to enter into information-sharing arrangements with entities, including the Queensland Police Service, to improve the sharing of industrial cannabis industry information under the Act.”
Mr Grout said low-THC hemp does not present the same sort of challenges as medicinal cannabis.
“It is a workhorse product that supplies fibre for building construction and dietary seed for human nutrition,” he said.
“It is also a powerhouse in carbon cycling.
“Hemp possesses the extraordinary ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at an astonishing rate.
“This, coupled with its rapid growth rate, renders hemp a formidable player in our fight against climate change.”
Potential benefits for producers include diversified revenue streams as well as improved soil fertility and less herbicide use, Mr Grout added.
“It is a multitasking marvel: not only does it sequester carbon, but it also undertakes
the noble task of soil remediation, effortlessly removing heavy metals from contaminated soils.
“Its deep-reaching root system further enhances this process, enriching the soil and fortifying its structure for future agriculture.
“Peer-reviewed studies resoundingly support hemp's prowess in carbon sequestration and soil remediation.”
The benefits extend to mining, energy and water corporations, he added. “Hemp's ability to absorb heavy metals from soil and its potential for biofuel production positions it as a lucrative venture for eco-conscious corporations.
“By incorporating hemp into supply chains, corporations can bolster their sustainability credentials, tap into burgeoning markets and drive innovation in renewable technologies.
“The potential of industrial hemp to revolutionise our agricultural practices and combat climate change cannot be overstated.”

Rotary Club Sarina Celebrate 75 Years Of Giving
The Sarina Sporting and Services Club was filled with laughter and smiles as guests and members of the Rotary Club Sarina gathered in celebration of the 75 years of service to local community.
The club was admitted into Rotary International in 1949 on May 13, marking this year as a significant milestone celebrated by all involved, both young and old.
Executive Advisor Ralph Johnson inducted the luncheon with thanks to attendees, members and visitors of the club, acknowledging the support and hard work from all involved which includes various community projects made possible by the Rotary Club of Sarina.
“Each Rotary Club is independent, but it’s also bound together by Rotary International and Rotary International does so
much work to better people’s lives.
“It’s the little things, you don’t know what effect it has,” Mr Johnson remarked.
& Jake’s FUNancial Year Calendar
Currently we are fundraising for the all-important RACQ CQ Rescue chopper.
A couple of weeks ago we received a call form a listener who told us of an amazing story how the CQ Rescue chopper saved her sons life after he contracted a disease.
The time in which it took the chopper to transport the family from Proserpine to Mackay was the difference between life and death.
It was a huge reminder as to how important it is to have the rescue chopper helping save lives in our region.
This is where the idea to put a calendar together to fundraise for the chopper was born.
Currently we are looking for businesses to donate an amount above $300 to feature in
a month of the calendar.
The response we have had so far has been overwhelming with so many local businesses putting their hands up to take part and donate.
Our current donation tally is up to just over $7000 already.
Big shout out to BMS Strata Systems, Reef Marine, Daly Bay Coal Terminal, Mackay Mazda, Acubis Technologies, Mount Pleasant Post Office, Harvey Norman Bedding, McCarthy Panel Works, Whitsunday Prosocial Support Services, MADD Mechanical, and Nick Wynne-Jones Painting for coming on board with donations so far.
Once the calendars are complete they will be up for purchase with all proceeds going directly to RACQ CQ Rescue chopper, stay tuned.
Catch the STAR Breakfast Show - Rach and Jake - from 5am weekdays, Mornings with Scotty from 9am, Afternoons with Kaley from 1pm, your drive home with Will and Woody from 5-7pm and the Hour of Power with Kyle and Jackie-O from 7pm every weekday!
Over the years some of the highlights include when the Rotary Club Sarina donated $20,000 towards the Sarina Skateboard Park, has been involved in cleaning up Sarina Beach CWA holiday home and busy-bees to improve landscaping, as well as yearly detailing of the Aged Care Bus for the Nursing Home. Members have even volunteered to build classrooms and a girl’s dormitory at Goldie College in the Solomon Islands.
In recent years, the Rotary Club Sarina has been involved in many local school establishments, like sponsoring buses to drive High School students to Mackay along with sponsorships of many individual and group students to educational camps and events, assisting school P&C’s and helping out with multiple fundraisers.
Among the many devoted club members, stood Lenny Lister, a centenarian of wisdom who has been a beacon of dedication and an inspiration to others, having volunteered over fifty years of Rotary service and is still standing as a passionate advocate in the community.
When asked the secret to living to 100, Mr Lister humorously says “mixing with younger people, you’ll think you’re their age,”
“Get involved in your community, you will benefit, your community will benefit, and the next generation will benefit,”
he remarked.
On the other end of the scale, youngest member of the Rotary club and Youth Protection Officer, Josie Dahtler shared her love for the welcoming atmosphere and camaraderie within the club.
“I love the fellowship, it’s traditionally an older, particularly males’ group but Sarina Rotary Club is really encouraging, it’s been very welcoming and I’ve learnt a lot.
“We’re always welcoming new members, it doesn’t matter how young or old or what you’re involved in, it’s just a lot of fun,” she said.
President Elect and International Director Jef Mtombo has been a pivotal beacon of hope helping students overseas in Zimbabwe receive the education they deserve. He selflessly collects second hand computers, screens and cords for multiple primary schools, high schools and medical students.
The equipment sent is carefully wrapped in second hand, particularly children’s and baby clothing which is always gratefully received. He has also initiated a major project called IT to Zim that will help build a science centre in South Africa. Mr Mtombo is passionate about the profound impact of giving from his heart which has led him to many opportunities which he describes as blessings from God.
Mr Mtombo said “we are people who are passionate, we work from our hearts, not our heads.

Mackay Hospital Foundation Introduces
New Volunteer Sponsorship
Volunteers are vital for not-forprofit charities, including the Mackay Hospital Foundation (MHF), where 100 volunteers serve eight hospitals in the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday Regions.
Securing a sponsor, like Community Bank Sarina from Bendigo Bank, is crucial to supporting their efforts and maintaining their invaluable services.
Community Bank Sarina Board Chair Karen May said their sponsorship of the MHF volunteers aligned with the Bank’s “profit for purpose” business model.
“Supporting community health and wellbeing is one of our primary objectives, with the view to creating stronger, more resilient communities,” Ms May said.
MHF General Manager Kristi Algate welcomed Community Bank Sarina as their
volunteer sponsor and said “we’re very proud to feature their logo on our Mackay Hospital Foundation volunteer uniforms.”
Volunteering involves many responsibilities, such as running the hospital gift shop, staffing the information desk at the hospital entrance, organising activities and offering support in the Children and Adolescent Unit for patients, parents, and siblings.
Additionally, volunteers drive the patient transfer bus, facilitate library and convenience trolleys throughout the hospital, aid in diverse tasks in the Specialist Outpatient Department, operate the patient transfer buggy from the carpark to the hospital, engage in a companionship program and provide assistance for patient comfort in oncology and beyond.
We spoke with one of Mackay’s very own
volunteers from the children’s unit to get her perspective on the role. Linda passionately said “I just love making the kids happy and getting out the lego blocks and things like that.
“I’ve been working at the base for a few years now and I thoroughly enjoy the activity packs and just overall making the children happy.”
Co-ordinator of the Volunteers, LaVerne White has been involved for just over thirty-five years and says she “loves helping people” and that “there are always positions available for more volunteers.”
Community Bank Sarina Manager Charmaine Matsen will be one of the banking team available for volunteers, hospital staff and visitors alike, with regular hospital visits to discuss lifestyle goals and banking needs.
“With any sponsorship we agree to, the financial investment is just the beginning, for us; it’s about building relationships and working together for mutual benefit,” Ms Matsen said.
“We believe that supporting something worthwhile involves us being on the ground – which is why we’ll be in regular attendance at the various hospital locations for personalised service and advice.”
Next time you visit any of the eight public hospitals within the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions, look for one of the cheerful volunteers to help you find your way, serve you in the gift shop or offer you a cup of tea in the wards. You’ll recognise them in their Community Bank Sarina-branded polo shirts. Anyone wishing to become a Mackay Hospital Foundation volunteer should contact Jackie Meldrum on 4885 5915.
Banksia Scout Group Grey Wolf Award Presentation
Two young explorers have been acknowledged for their dedication and resilience after earning a reputable Grey Wolf Award for Banksia Scout Group.
The Grey Wolf Award is a great achievement and requires a cub (aged 8-11 years old) to participate in 60 cub scouting experiences, assist with 9 activities, lead 7 activities, complete 5 nights of camping, learn to tie 3 knots, complete a 6-hour hike and attend 2 additional hikes.
As well as learning scouting skills, there is also a requirement to complete 6 personal goals and attend a leadership course and an adventurous journey.
Grey Wolf recipients Addison Mortimore and Keira Bibbs have achieved these goals. Both youth members are very active in their
section and participated in many District activities like bushwalks, open days, ScoutFest and external interests.
Addison, who has achieved her yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do, challenged herself to do a triathlon of a 50m swim, 3.2km bike and 1km run and attended a five-night camp called Cuboree. This was a great accomplishment for Addison, which she is proud to gain confidence from.
In her spare time Addison is very passionate about raising money for RACQ Rescue and, a highlight this year, was the tour of their facility with the Banksia Cub Scouts. It was enjoyable learning about RACQ Rescue services and going on the helicopter.
Keira also has many interests and shared them with the unit through
her Special Interest Accomplishments. Keira played cricket with the Heat Girls cricket team, planted trees on National Tree day, did the tree top challenge on the Sunshine Coast, enjoys singing in the school choir and learning STEM from the STEM library club.
Near the end of her journey in cubs, Keira led a 4-hour hike on the Crediton Creek Track up at Eungella. During the bushwalk, the cubs enjoyed the wildlife and lovely views of the river and sharing the experience with each other.
Both youth members have transitioned to the Scout Section where they are looking forward to continuing their scouting journey and are excited by the challenges ahead.

The anticipation is rising as the Pierce Brothers gear up to grace Mackay’s Seabreeze Hotel on June 6th and Airlie’s Magnums Hotel on June 7th, marking their thrilling return to North Queensland after their stellar performance at last year’s Airlie Beach Festival of Music in November.
Riding high on the success of their chart-topping album, ‘Everything Is Bigger Than Me’ and a string of soldout shows across Europe and Australia, the dynamic duo is eager to bring their unique sound to the region once again with their infectious energy and mesmerising performances.

For Patrick Pierce, one-half of the twin duo, the prospect of returning to Mackay is met with genuine excitement and antic-
ipation. “We absolutely love it up there,” he shares.
“Every time we’re there, the audiences are just fantastic, so we’re really looking forward to getting back and seeing everyone.”
Reflecting on their past experiences in Mackay, Patrick reminisces about the cheering crowds and notably warmer weather compared to Melbourne.
“It’s definitely warmer than Melbourne for one, and we just have a ball!” he adds.
“There’s always great crowds, everyone’s responsive and it’s one of our favourite spots to travel to in Australia.”
As identical twins, Patrick and Jack Pierce share a unique bond, both on and off the stage.
“Being identical twins, we’ve always had a similar voice box, so harmonies are something that have always come quite easy to us,” Patrick explains.
Their journey from busking on the streets to performing on stages across the globe has been nothing short of extraordinary.

In a heart-warming coincidence, a malnourished kitten on the brink of death, was discovered by two backpackers in Clermont late last week.
Weak and fragile, the kitten was taken in by the compassionate couple who took care of her to the best of their ability. After a week of dedicated attention, they soon realised that they couldn't provide her with the ongoing care she needed, thus, they reached out to Mackay Pet rescue Inc and ultimately surrendered her.
Late Saturday afternoon, ‘Little Lou’ arrived at the rescue shelter, with a hope for new life thanks to the kindness of the backpackers. Despite her rough start, the carers at Mackay Pet Rescue Inc have witnessed the sweetness and joy that has

“We started playing shows when we were around 15 and started doing gigs around the area,” Patrick recalls.
“But it wasn’t until our 20s when our now manager suggested busking, which blew us up even more, to where we are now.”
Reflecting on their whirlwind musical odyssey, Patrick acknowledges that “it’s been a wild ride” and the journey they’ve embarked on as twin brothers has been fuelled by their passion for music and a shared dream of making a mark in the industry.

Cutters Rugby League Women Celebrate Unique Championship Double
Mackay Cutters have secured a historic rugby league championship double after capturing the 2024 BMD Womens Premiership.
In a unique feat the Cutters women showed their champion qualities to sink Norths Devils 16-6 in an absorbing Grand Final at Redcliffe’s Kayo Stadium to bring home the club’s second piece of silverware in the space of five weeks.
There were jubilant scenes last month when the Cutters lifted the inaugural Harvey Norman Under 19s Womens trophy with an 18-16 Grand Final triumph over Brisbane Tigers at Totally Workwear Stadium.
It was a double celebration for Mackay’s rising half back Mersades Lawson, hooker Paityne Johns and centre Miah Powell who can now boast Under 19s and BMD Premiership medals in the one season.
Gun forward Lily Peacock produced an outstanding best-on-ground performance for the Cutters – inspiring team mates with her bustling runs, clever passing and rugged defence.
Mackay notched three tries in the space of six minutes through North Queensland prop Sareka Mooka, number nine Alisha Foord and centre Jasmine Peters to jump to a handy 14-0 lead.
Norths hit back when fullback Montaya Hudson crossed for a vital four pointer that was converted by five eighth Georgia Hannaway before the interval.
Talented Cutters’ five eighth Kayla Shepherd scored the lone two points of the second half when she booted a late penalty goal.
Marco Peters’ champion Mackay squad can reflect on a memorable campaign that yielded nine victories and a draw from their eleven matches plus the minor and premiership titles.
Rejuvenated Cutters Slam PNG In Hostplus Cup
MACKAY Cutters returned to the winners list in Hostplus Cup action last weekend with a rousing 40-26 triumph over the PNG Hunters at BB Print Stadium.
The Cutters produced a spirited second half revival to sink their opponents and chalk up a fifth win from ten games played.
PNG led 20-10 at the break but failed to contain a rampaging Mackay line up that stormed to victory in the second stanza with a five try rout.
Hunters prop Junior Rop burst over to score the opening try of the match after three minutes that was converted by half back Jamie Mavoko before Cutters centre Josh Smith responded with the first of his two tries in the 11th minute.
The powerful Rop bagged a dou-
ble soon after as the Hunters edged ahead but Mackay’s gun utility half Jaxon Purdue levelled proceedings when he evaded defenders to cross for a neat four pointer.
PNG centre Alex Max stamped his mark before the half time interval –scooting over for two tries in the space of four minutes to give the visitors a handy ten-point lead.
It was all the Cutters after lemons with prop Brandon Russell, five eighth Riley Dean, emerging forward Jamal Shibasaki, fullback Raydan Burns and the capable Smith crashing over for tries to blitz the Hunters.
Dean added six conversions to complete a morale-boosting win in front of a raucous local crowd.
The victory snapped a four-match losing streak for the rejuvenated Cutters who have a bye this weekend.
Supplied By Chris Karas
Their only blemish was a 22-10 loss to the Burleigh Bears in a round seven preliminary fixture at UAA Park on the Gold Coast.
In winning both the Harvey Norman Under 19s and BMD Womens Premiership trophies the Cutters’ players and officials have etched their names in the Queensland Rugby League record books.
Mackay’s championship-winning BMD Womens Premiership squad for 2024 featured fullback Krystal Blackwell, wingers Libby Surha and Ebony Raftstrand-Smith,
centres Shellie Long and Jasmine Peters, five eighth Kayla Shepherd and half back
Tahlulah Tillett, lock forward Lillian Yarrow, second rowers Shaniah Power and Bree Chester, prop forwards Lily Peacock and Essay Banu, hooker Alisha Foord with interchange props Lyrech Mara and Sareka Mooka, utility half Emily Bella and lock forward Pani Rupapere and Under 19s winning trio of half back Mersades Lawson, hooker Paityne Johns and centre Miah Powell. Pace Setting Brothers Sink Magpies In Top Of The Table A Grade Clash
Mackay Brothers earned bragging rights in the 2024 NQBE Mackay Junior League A Grade competition after toppling the Magpies 24-10 in their top of the table clash last Sunday at Sologinkin Oval.
The unbeaten Leprechauns turned in another polished performance to register their fifth consecutive win of the season and open up a four-point gap from their rivals.
Brothers scored four tries to two with crack centres Rydge Smith and Jayden Batchelor, second rower Declan Laird and hooker Daniel Kelly posting four pointers and Smith booting four conversions.
Souths Sharks remain entrenched
in the top four after tossing Moranbah Miners 32-12 at Shark Park.
Back rower Frank Tuivaiti, centre Ali Okusitino, fullback Marmin Barba and half back Henri Stocks notched tries for Souths with Stocks potting six goals.
Moranbah half back Nat Hinchliffe and centre Mark Rosendale grabbed tries for the visitors.
Wests Tigers thumped Carltons Devils 70-10 at Tiger Park with five eighth Nicholas Baker contributing twenty points from a try and eight goals.
Other try scorers for Wests included skipper and second rower Darcy Cox (2), winger Brydon Smith (2), fullback Connor McDermott, hooker Tait Poli, centres Zack Walker and Tyler Holmes, Will Goodland, lock Kellen Jenner, back rower Brad-
ley Simpson and winger Joran Schoenmaker.
Sarina Crocodiles had too many big guns for the Whitsunday Brahmans, carving out a 40-14 triumph at Les Stagg Oval.
In Under 15 Boys action, the Wanderers Roosters and Wests Tigers remain undefeated after seven rounds.
Wanderers downed arch rivals Mackay Magpies 28-8 with talented centres Cliff Hussey (2) and Amos Grigg and prop Xavier Wayman (2) notching tries and half back Isaac McFarlane booting four goals.
The Tigers rolled Brothers Blue 16-6 with promising hooker Marik Srsen, fullback Jed Spreadborough and centre Zac Hansen crossing for tries and centre Chevy Bartolo landing two goals in an absorbing tussle.

Two Aussie Olympic Icons Will Attend BMA Mackay Marina Run
RUNNING
Two of Australia’s most celebrated Olympic legends will be heading to the BMA Mackay Marina Run on Sunday 2 June 24.
Olympian and London Marathon Age World Record holder, Krishna Stanton will pace out the 21.1km half marathon in Mackay at a time of 1 hr and 45 minutes while Athletics Australia Hall of Fame Inductee, Benita Willis, will also attend as an ambassador.
Krishna represented Australia at numerous World Cross Country Championships, World indoor Championships (3000m), the Commonwealth Games (10,000m) in Victoria, Canada, and the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona (3000m).
Krishna was the winner of the Sydney City to Surf in 1992, a Silver medallist in the marathon at the Manchester Commonwealth Games and 2002 and is still running to this day, having broken the World Record for the Women's Marathon in the 55-59 age group at the London Marathon in 2022.
Born in Mackay (and now residing at the Gold Coast), Benita Willis is regarded as Australia’s greatest female distance runner. Benita has had an illustrious sporting career and is a three-time national champion in the women’s 5,000 metres. In 2004 Willis achieved one of the most significant victories in Australian athletics when she won the World Cross Country Championships.
Benita is the only Australian ever to win this race — arguably the hardest race in the world. Benita has represented Australia in four Olympics, held numerous championship records (some that still stand today) and was inducted into the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame in 2018.
Event Director, Tim said having two in-

Ffluential Australian runners involved in the event was a huge win for regional Queensland.
Said Tim, “These two ladies are two of the best in terms of Australian running and for our race entrants to have the opportunity to run with Olympic legends of this calibre is pretty special.”
Advised Tim, “The sport of running is really unique, it’s all about community, challenging and supporting each other and I can’t think of a more amazing way to push yourself than taking on the pace set by an Olympic champion.”
Interest in the BMA Mackay Marina Run continues to grow each year with this year’s event even attracting a small cohort of international runners.
Tim advised, “Entries in this year’s half marathon are about to hit 600 which is a record for us. We also will be welcoming 4 international runners to Mackay which is a coup for us and for profiling our region globally.”
Now in its 16th year, the BMA Mackay Marina run will raise much needed funds for local Leukaemia Foundation services and programs.
Since its inception, the event has raised more than $600,000 to support local families in their fight against blood cancer.
Registrations for this year’s 21.1km half marathon, 10km and 5km fun runs and 3km kids dash will close Saturday 1 June at 4pm.

KAYO SPORTS PARTNERS WITH MACKAY CENTURY CRICKET COMPETITION
Fans across Australia can now watch the Mackay Century Cricket Competition thanks to the renewed broadcast partnership with Kayo Sports.
Kayo Sports, Australia's premier sports streaming service, will stream matches at Great Barrier Reef Arena which includes three games on Friday and Saturday, plus the two finals on Sunday, live and free on Kayo Freebies.
“This is our third year working with Kayo Sports to broadcast our senior competition, and we’re thrilled to partner with them again as we head up to Mackay. Kayo Sports has proven to be an excellent channel to showcase some of the incredible talent participat-
ing in the league and brings new audiences to the competition,” said Century Cricket Group Chair Stuart Giles.
Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson says the Kayo Sports deal is a big win for the players participating and puts Mackay on the map.
“These tournaments will draw a big crowd, and we’re excited to showcase the Great Barrier Reef Arena as a first-class facility for players and spectators,” Mayor Williamson said.
“The Kayo Sports deal will expand that audience to a national and even international level, opening up our region to potential vis-

confines of the vehicles.
With the more popular State & National Masters Championship events now in the recent past the club turned its attention to a more challenging and adventurous activity according to some members. A short time ago our secretary insisted we should be enjoying our back yard more and swimming some local waters.
Thus, the “Four Dams in One Day” concept was launched in Summer but actioned on Saturday 25th May with a few short days of our northern autumn remaining. A quick ring around and NQ Truck and Car rentals had a small 12-seater bus for us to hire at a great rate and the road trip was on. Except of course we were oversubscribed with willing guinea pigs for this “Cool” adventure and ended up with a sort of tag along tour as well. As we proceeded deeper into the Pioneer valley all eyes were on the ascent to Eungella which was again shrouded in clouds, mist and drizzle. Eungella delivered its aboriginal meaning “Land of the Cloud” in a true and cruel twist of the weather. None the less we pressed on to the first stop at the top of the range to enjoy the range in what turned into a short comfort stop before we all hastily returned to the warm
With the enthusiasm quickly diminishing we were buoyed by the first rays of sunshine as we crossed the divide into the rain shadow past this escarpment and approached the first swim (of four) in Eungella Dam. Fourteen intrepid swimmers took the first plunge into what turned out to be 21 degrees of “Wake up Wally” water as we set off on a 15 minute out and back swim. The consensus was that the swim was well worth the effort but the team wanted a treat!
itors during the three years that Mackay will host the Century Cricket Competition, and beyond,” he said.
The Mackay Century Cricket Competition kicks off on Friday 2 August with a carnival style atmosphere as the eight teams play for a share in $80,000.
Kayo Sports confirmed as broadcast partner for upcoming Century Cricket Competition Mackay. The Kayo Sports partnership caps off a big few weeks for the Century Cricket Group as nominations to play will soon draw to a close. Seniors still have time to register via the Century Cricket Competitions website but by 5pm on Wednesday 5 June.
Cricket lovers can view matches by simply downloading the Kayo Sports app or visiting kayosports.com.au and registering for a Freebies account.

swimmers now like a well-oiled machine taking to the water without fear as they followed the bank and dam wall marker buoys in another pleasant swim.
Next stop was near water but not in it at the fabulous “Eden Café” on the Digging’s Road. Warm drinks and some treats were enjoyed before we set off for Teemburra Dam and swim #2, in mostly bright sunshine as the weather turned favourable. With more interest and a little practice on rigging for swimming mode we made good time in entering, swimming and getting ready for another move. But as swimmers and Sinkers know not without sustenance as we managed a short break and enjoyed a picnic lunch before someone upset the Pidgeon’s with a “Lets Go” call!
Kinchant Dam was the site for our third swim which proved pleasant enough with
