T

he ever-present and commendable Senior Sergeant of Whitsunday Police Station, Sgt Nathan Blain, is sadly leaving the region.

Sgt Blain began his Queensland Police service in 1996 and was one of the first to complete his training at the North Queensland Police Academy in Townsville.

“I was actually on my honeymoon when I received advice that I was accepted. So, Traci and I had six weeks as a married couple before I went off to the academy,” Sgt Blain recalls.

Whitsunday Impact Church operates the Whitsunday Food Pantry through its mission charity, Global Care.

The Pantry is open every Tuesday, from 9am to 12pm, from their main premise, 202 to 204 Bruce Highway, Proserpine.

The Pantry also welcomes donations of non-perishable food, cleaning and personal items, and can be dropped off at their premise of Friday afternoons, from 3pm to 5pm.

Dedicated, Determined, And Deserving Sergeant Blain Relocates Continued from Page 1

E

ver the one to help, Sgt Blain “Always had a strong interest in pursuing policing career as I wanted a job that was different every day and I liked the idea of being able to do my bit to help others.”

Since completing his academy training, Sgt Blain has always been posted to North Queensland stations, including Townsville and the smaller communities of Bamaga, Middlemount, and Ravenshoe.

Sgt Blain and his wife Traci were initially welcomed to Proserpine over six years ago.

“As a family we were missing the connections you make in country towns, and I was looking for another challenge when I was fortunate to be selected for the position of Officer in Charge Proserpine,” he explained.

“And we moved to Prossy in January 2010.

In 2015 I was promoted to Senior Sergeant and transferred to Whitsunday Station as the Officer in Charge.”

During his time in the Whitsundays, Sgt Blain has been an integral asset to the community, a confident responder to emergencies across the region and led the Whitsunday Police with poise and confidence.

“There have been many highlights over the past 14 years. I have worked with some amazing people both inside the QPS and outside, be it other government agencies, community groups or private enterprise.

The highlight for me was how our community rallied and rebuilt after Tropical Cyclone Debbie to come back better and stronger,” Sgt Blain said.

Another highlight, which Sgt Blain is humble about, is the 2015 rescue of multiple individuals from a burning building.

A fire had broken out in a restaurant in Airlie Beach and spread to the backpackers accommodation above. Sgt Blain and two other officers were able to successfully locate and rescue a number of individuals from the building, then inundated with thick smoke, however there was an elderly couple unaccounted for.

Sgt Blain and the officers returned to the smoke to rescue the pair, bringing them safely outside, before covering their faces and once again venturing into the building to locate any other individuals.

Sgt Blain and the officer were decorated with bravery awards for their efforts.

Sgt Blain’s new position is Patrol Group Inspector for the Cassowary Coast, based

in Innisfail, where he will supervise eight police divisions, from Cardwell to Babinda.

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Julie Hall said it was with mixed emotions that we bid farewell to such a universally respected member of our community.

Whitsunday’s First Baby Midge Point

ver the c o u r s e of several weeks, residents of Midge Point, Bloomsbury, and Laguna Quays have been inundated with extreme power loss and shortages, hindering holiday plans and causing undue stress during the summer heat.

eet the newest resident of the Whitsundays region - beautiful baby boy Timothée Jean Fuzier, who chose the special date of January 1 for his arrival last week.

Timothée (his name is the French version of Timothy) was the first baby born at Proserpine Hospital for 2024, arriving on Monday at 1.59pm weighing 3880 grams (8lb 5oz).

He also claims the honour of being the first baby born across the Mackay Hospital and Health Service (HHS) region which stretches from Sarina to Bowen and west to Clermont.

He is the second child of parents Hannah and Sébastien Fuzier, who decided to make the Whitsundays home eight years ago.

“I’m English and Séb is French,” Hannah said.

“We were travelling and fell in love with the place.

Timothée’s older brother, Léo Bastien, is three and a half and both boys were born at Proserpine Hospital.

“They were great there, so lovely, especially our midwife Ellen for this birth,” Hannah said.

“But on the day his arrival was so quick; I had my first contraction at 12pm and he was born by 2pm.”

Hannah’s parents will travel from Yorkshire to meet their new grandson at the end of the month.

Turning to their community Noticeboard on Facebook, residents outlined their frustrations and displeasure with the unprecedented power outages.

One resident, taking to the Noticeboard stated on December 27, “Ergon needs to take one month off everyone’s monthly connection fee, because honestly, we’ve had no power, more often than we’ve had power.”

“Four hours on Christmas Day with no power, now again tonight? Yeah refund the entire month’s power bill Ergon Energy and say sorry and MERRY CHRISTmas to everyone.”

Another resident shared “Just called them and the recording said we should be restored by 7pm. Luckily it wasn’t a real person. I’m struggling to stay nice.”

Resident Timothy O’Neill opened a petition, calling for infrastructure upgrades, refunds and credits to accounts, and funds to replace damaged electrical appliances and food loss.

“We are living in a cost of living epidemic,” Timothy stated.

“A pandemic even, but we are focusing on our local community at present.”

According to the petition, on Christmas day alone, “a day meant for joy and celebration with loved ones, the entire suburb, including the adjacent townships of up to 957 households, were left in the dark while preparing our Christmas dinner. This is not just an inconvenience; it’s a breach of trust between us as consumers and Ergon Energy as our service provider.”

Member for Whitsundays, Amanda Camm thanked the residents of the community for how they have handled to power crisis.

“I know many have been impacted by the recurring power outages and whilst incredibly frustrating and inconvenient, the community has responded in a supportive and positive manner and I sincerely thank you.

“The latest update I have been provided from Ergon is that weather has damaged some parts to the system and they are currently finding those parts and replacing them. In the meantime, they are feeding the power into the area another way which should see improvements to power supply.”

ON THE BEAT Driver Caught Under The Influence, Cannonvale A 24-year-old male resident of Cannonvale has been arrested and charged following an alleged incident at 5:15pm on January 6 on Shute Harbour Road in Cannonvale.

It’s alleged that patrolling police stopped a vehicle for the purpose of a roadside breath test on Shute Harbour Road after observing the vehicle cross onto the incorrect side of the road.

The driver was subjected to a roadside breath test.

As a result, it’s further alleged that the driver was detained and taken to the Whitsunday police station where additional testing revealed their breath alcohol concentration to be 0.234 per cent - almost five times the legal limit.

The 24-year-old driver was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of liquor and also driving on or across a continuous white line.

Senior Constable Steve Smith from the Mackay Crime Prevention Unit advised.

She was subjected to roadside breath and drug tests and was subsequently detained.

“If you are planning to drink, make plans not to drive,” he added.

It’s further alleged the driver has then assaulted an officer before removing a body worn camera and throwing it to the ground. She was then restrained by police.

Assault Police Offences, Bowen

The charges will be heard in the Proserpine Magistrates Court on January 29.

Queensland Police have charged a 34-yearold woman with several offences including serious assault of a police officer, following an alleged incident at Bowen on December 2.

“It’s every driver’s responsibility to ensure that they do not drive while they are affected by either alcohol or illegal drugs,”

It will be alleged that around 7:00pm, police intercepted a vehicle on Herbert Street, where the woman was the driver.

While being placed into the nearby police vehicle it will be further alleged the woman has then struck another officer.

The 34-year-old Bowen woman has been charged with common assault, serious assault of a police officer, obstruct police, wilful damage of police property.

She was refused police bail.

Hair-Raising Local Talent

U

ndeniable talent is Liam O’Neill.

Hair raising, skin tingling, incredible beats is what you can expect from this youth drummer, and in a few short years, do not be surprised to see him supplying the heavy beats for unstoppable music tracks.

Music is something he has always been surrounded with, with his father a great muso and his brother pursuing music in the music hub Melbourne.

One day, Liam just hopped behind his dad’s kit and everything changed.

A natural talent, Liam took to the drums like a duck to water.

“One night, I just hopped on and started learning. I can’t read it but give me a song or just play it and I can learn it,” Liam explained.

Now, years on, Liam has continued to flourish, beating his way through song after song, and is now the drummer of youth rock band Category 5.

“I’ve always wanted to feel the music scene, performing a lot and I was able to join Category 5,” he said.

“I did the Music Festival with them, and I just love it.”

With very hard rock, classic heavy metal energy, Category 5 have taken on their own battle, creating a name and a following for themselves.

“I love the shows and the festivals. I love the energy and just performing for people and seeing them like our music.”

Signing up for the 2023 Young Whitsundays Got Talent, Category 5 took home second place, and were invited to perform at one of the venues for

“I used to underestimate my own playing and was nervous and very insecure. But everyone I know says otherwise, and I am excited to release our own stuff.”

In 2024, the Chamber will continue to champion for the business community through their advocacy work, provide exclusive services to members, and host business events and education.

What’s the one thing about The Whitsundays you think everyone should know?

I think everyone should know that The Whitsundays and its surroundings offer so much beauty. You just have to walk outside! Whether it’s hiking the Honeyeater Lookout, going to Hamilton Island for the day, having lunch at Cape Gloucester, or camping at Lake Proserpine, the options are endless. You just have to make the most of it, and you’ll see that this community has so much to offer, and we should be so proud of where we live!

What is your ideal weekend in The Whitsundays?

My ideal weekend in The Whitsundays is, of course, taking advantage of our stunning backyard. For me, the ultimate weekend is leaving the mainland behind and camping on one of the Islands. My favourites would have to be Henning Island, Thomas Island or one of the protected bays in Cid Harbour.

Busy Bowen Booms Snakes On The Move In Region

esidents of the Whitsundays should be aware that snake activity is on the rise, with warm humid temperatures ensuring that snakes are active and out and about.

How to protect your home this summer: Be sure to maintain your yard and lawns, so that snakes cannot hide as easily in long grass.

Avoid leaving piles of rubbish or building refuse around, as snakes can easily hide in the small nooks and crannies.

Store pet food and food scraps in closed and well-sealed containers and bins, to reduce any tasty snacks for snakes to treat themselves on.

When working outside in the garden, use gloves and wear protective clothing, as most snake fans are small and cannot penetrate through thicker materials.

Consider building an enclosed patio for family and pets to remain snake-free while enjoying time in the sunshine and fresh

air.

If your pet gets bitten by a snake: Your fur friend may be more at risk of a snake bite, due to their curious behaviour, and while thick fur on dogs may protect them slightly, it is best to act with caution.

If you believe your pet has been bitten by a snake, take them to the vet immediately.

If you or a loved one is bitten by a snake: Dial Triple 000 and stay still, laying down is best, and keep calm.

If the bite is on a limb, apply a firm bandage on the bite site. Work the bandage from the limb upwards, working towards the heart, and covering the limb as much as possible.

The most common snakes in the Whitsundays include the green tree snake and the scrub python, which are both harmless.

The most common venomous snakes to look out for are the eastern brown snake and taipan.

owen tourism and accommodation operators are excited to share that business is booming this festive summer season.

Owner and Manager of Queens Beach Tourist Village, Jennie Greer states that Christmas and New Year bookings have been at an all-time high, compared to previous years.

“Bowen is definitely becoming more popular, and we are proud to have an award-winning park within the area for guests to come and enjoy. We hope this trend continues as it can only benefit accommodation providers and businesses within our community-spirited town.”

Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business, Leanne Abernethy said the Bowen Visitor Information Centre had been very busy in the past two weeks, reflecting how busy the accommodation providers were in the

town.

“We have averaged more than 300 visitors per day since the start of the new year, which is much higher than the first week of January last year.

“Our surveys show about 25% of our visitors are staying in Bowen and another 25% are making a day trip into the town to check out such things as the secluded beaches, the scenic lookouts, our fresh seafood, the Summergarden Theatre and the Edgecumbe Bay Walking Trail.

“When people stop at the Big Mango, we encourage every visitor to make the detour into Bowen as it is only a few kilometres off the highway and really is the hidden gem at the top of the Whitsundays.

“We have increased our destination marketing budget in the past 12 months and it is great to see more and more people discovering this piece of paradise.”

Lifting The Curse Of Airlie Beach

W

hether it be locals sipping their lattes at coffee shops, drinking pints at the local, sharing a story at the weekend barbie or rising from their yoga mats after their downward dogs, there’s a common theme in Airlie; An urban myth that pops up in conversation; A mystifying, riveting mystery of the ‘Curse of the Whitsundays’.

Many speak of a curse that’s been placed on the Whitsundays long ago. That Airlie Beach is a place of healing, yet it has a cloud that hangs over its dark past. Local Musician, Community Worker and Human Rights Advocate, Adrian Thomas has been writing music with Traditional Ngaro/Gia Owner, Harold Bowen. The two have been collaborating with some of Far North Queensland and Australia’s best musicians, creating music that speaks to the heart of Harold and Ngaro/Gia people’s journey. Part of that journey has been unpacking Harold’s family’s displacement, slavery, pain, heartbreak, and survival. A familiar but saddening journey of many traditional people that unpacks the truth of the Curse of the Whitsundays.

What ensued was a slaughter of traditional communities including women and children, with tremendous brutality. The old people describe “the Proserpine River ran red with blood”.

As the story would go Ngaro/Gia People lived in this land for over 40,000 Years.

They lived in harmony, self-sufficiently in the abundant and beautiful location we know as the Whitsundays. The Ngaro/Gia Dreamtime story speaks of the Rainbow Serpent moving through the area, creating the Proserpine River. It was thought to bring life via the waterways, feeding the animals, birdlife, trees, soil, and the Indig-

When the settlers came, communities of Ngaro and Gia people were living along the Proserpine River and throughout the Whitsundays, utilising the abundant natural resources. The new arrivals, however, were not interested in sharing the land or living with the local tribes; The opposite was the case.

In the ensuing bloodshed, the few locals who were spared were those strong enough to work. That bloodshed running through the Proserpine River desecrated the sacred site and some say the spirits of the old people lie in the crocodiles now residing in the river. This may offer some explanation of the presence of more large crocodiles per kilometre here than in any other system in Queensland. Researchers have been baffled at the relative lack of scars and scratches on the reptiles, which they say is expected in high-density areas due to fights. Even more puzzling is the lack of larger males pushing their competitors out into nearby Airlie Beach, one of “Queensland’s greatest tourist meccas” (ABC News 11-18-22).

The brutality of what Murri (Indigenous people native to Queensland) call “the killing times” has effectively desecrated the most sacred site and the life bringer of the entire Whitsundays. According to Adrian

(who is of Black, Red, Yellow, and Irish descent) “our ancestors’ actions have cursed ourselves”. Queensland has a long history of brutality during these times which is starting to uncover. A film was recorded for their new music It’s Adrian’s view that in lifting the ‘Curse of the Whitsundays’, we must acknowledge the truth of our darker past. He feels the first step is memorialising the massacres.

There is currently only one memorial in Australia, Coniston near Yuendumu. He says by building a monument under the guidance of the Traditional Owners we can acknowledge the darkness that lies within each of us, that is passed down our ancestral tree, and play our part in building a foundation that sets the spirits of the past free. By bringing forth inclusiveness and reconciliation we can make way for healing, welcome returning Traditional Owners, and cleanse the most sacred site in the Whitsundays, renewing the whole region.

Adrian and Harold recently shared cultural insights at Cannonvale State School where 450 students were taught the dark

video and an up-and-coming documentary. This may have been one of the first times it’s been shared in a primary education setting in Queensland.

Adrian says “The next generation don’t want or need to carry the burdens of the past”.

He also applauds the progressive nature of the Cannonvale State School and Teaching Staff for their commitment to understanding, healing and unity.

Adrian says “The young people are ready to let go of the shackles. Perhaps we as a people are ready to follow suit.”

We also learn about First Aid, so I can help when people get hurt,” she said.

ur local Proserpine Mill has signed on six new apprentices, as part of 34 across the eight Wilmar Sugar and Renewables Queensland sugar mills.

The new apprentices completed their twoweek Safe Start program in January, before they began their work at their representative sugar mills.

Training Superintendent Daniel Shipard said the two-week Safe Start program prepared the new apprentices for what life would be like in Wilmar’s mills.

“It’s about getting them to understand Wilmar’s safety requirements and procedures, as well as giving them the basic skillset they require to enter their relevant workshops,” Daniel said.

Ryan Penhallurick is a fifth generation Proserpine Scout and he flourishes with the adventures that Scouts take him on.

“My family has been living in Proserpine since my father was 16 years old and, for over three generations now, we’ve been breeding horses on our family farm,” Jayme said.

“Being able to do my apprenticeship at Proserpine Mill means that I can be home every afternoon to spend time working on the farm with my family and compete in camp drafts with my friends on the weekends.”

Daniel said he was excited to bring the newest intake of apprentices into Wilmar’s operations, across the key trades of electrical, fitting and turning, boiler making and diesel fitting.

“They’re going to be a huge asset to our organisation, and we can’t wait to see them grow over the next four years of their apprenticeship.”

think it’s obvious to people now that things like New Year’s Resolutions, New Year New You, and being instantly motivated to make changes simply doesn’t work. So, what DOES work?

1. It’s not selfish to prioritise yourself and allow yourself a little bit of you time daily to exercise. If you don’t look after your own health, then ultimately how is that being a role model to your loved ones who are watching and mimicking your every move?

2. Motivation only lasts so long. Commitment and consistency is much more powerful. Setting a routine by starting to wake up the same time every day is the easiest place to start. There is some powerful science to suggest this is one of the best things you can do for your overall health.

3. Set some personal values. What is important to YOU. You are unique so your values will more than likely even be different to that of your partner’s. Openly discuss your own personal values so they are known and openly communicated.

Then, make sure all of your actions are aligned with your own values. If being a healthy person is an important value to you, then something like binge drinking should be obviously misaligned to you.

A brainchild of performer Will Siska, the Australian Beach Boys Tribute is a loving recreation of the nostalgic legends that are the Beach Boys.

“We chose to go with the Beach Boys because they have these great harmonies and vocals that just transcend, and have the nostalgic energy that we craved,” explained Will.

Having been touring Australia with their Australian Beach Boys Tribute for over seven years, the team know how to get the crowd going, with amazing vocals, and authentic recreations of the energy and costuming.

Will acts as one of the lead vocalists and on rhythm guitar.

With him is Greg, with lead vocals, Gerry as vocalist and the band’s drummers, Michael as vocalist and lead guitar and Ian on bass guitar.

The crew also enlist the powerful presence and vocals of Anita, who is backing vocals and feature vocalist.

“Anita highlights many of the songs, and she’s amazing in her own right,” Will explained.

Altogether, this crew ensures the perfect energy for a performance like no other.

F

or the girls of the Year 8 Red Volleyball team for Proserpine State High School, coming home from the Queensland Volleyball Junior Schools Cup with Gold for Division 2 was a massive achievement.

Travelling to the Gold Coast for the competition, the girls were eager to showcase their growth, development, and improved skills on the court, with this year being the second time some of the girls have made it to the Schools Cup. The team played five games across three

days of competition and were victorious for each game.

“If you’ve been playing for a few years in primary school, you’ll be great,” said Mia.

“It was very exciting,” said Mia Clark.

“But starting in Year 7 is great, because you get so many opportunities to play.”

“We played our best and it worked out.”

With some of the teammates only recently joining the team, the girls were proud of their wins, ultimately coming home with the Gold for Division 2.

And what do they say to other students who wish to get into the sport.

“Just get involved,” said Jorja Easton.

Pania Corowa explained that Proserpine State High School “Has some really great coaches.”

“Our coach this year was Miss Ryan, and she was great. She was focussed and positive, and she was so organised,” Pania said.

Pania was also shocked at the end of the compeition, being crowned the Most

Valuable Player for the competition.

“It was a massive surprise, but it was so good,” she explained.

Jorja tells the story differently, “She was so shocked! She didn’t expect it at all!”

She was selected MVP by Queensland professional representatives, due to her good sportsmanship, teamwork, and growth over the competition.

“It was a really good feeling, from only landing fourth place last year, to getting MVP. It was so good.”

Cannons Ready For 2024

annonvale Cannons Swimming Club coaches, Ken Crittenden and Mark Erickson have been very impressed with swimmers keeping up their swim fitness over the school holidays. Despite the hot weather, swimmers continued to train and put in their best effort.

Last week, senior swimmers reflected on their achievements for 2023 and set new goals for the start of 2024. Many of the competitive swimmers have their focus on PBs, upgrades and club awards and some are looking at working towards qualifying for Qld Championships or being selected for the NQ School team. Most of the swimmers would like to improve their fitness, feel good, have some fun with friends with similar interests.

The Cannonvale Cannons are also planning their annual swim carnival, Cannon-

vale Cannons Short Course Transition Meet which is to be held on 27th and 28th January. The highlights of the carnival include the Skins events and the Monster raffle.

The Cannonvale Cannons Swimming Club also held its first Club Night for 2024 on Wednesday, 10th January 2024.

New swimmers and their families are most welcome to come along. The “warm up” for Club Night starts from 5pm and racing starts from 6pm.

The Cannons have a busy schedule for the next few months. The first district carnival starts on Saturday and 16 swimmers are travelling to Ayr to compete in the Burdekin Sprint Carnival.

Ironman Success Whitsunday Triathlon Club

RUNNING

hitsunday Triathlon Club finished the year on a high with two members competing at the IRONMAN 70.3 Taupo event in New Zealand recently.

Dan McDonnell made his Professional debut at the 70.3 distance racing in a hot pro field of 19 and had a super race finishing in 12th place in 3 hours 57 minutes.

He recovered from an early setback losing his goggles in the swim leg to blitz the 90km bike averaging 42 km pace and pushing 300 watts.

Dan capped off the strong ride by storming home in the run leg completing the 21.1km in 1 hour 16 minutes and was elated with his final race for 2023.

Veteran Ironman 70.3 competitor Debra Childs finished her seventh long distance event in a respectable 7 hours and was happy to race in front of family and friends in New Zealand.

While most members recovered and recharged their batteries over the Christmas/New Year period there will be no putting the feet up for Mark McConkey who is stepping up to compete in his first full Ironman triathlon at the New Zealand Ironman on March 2 next year.

Mark finished the Melbourne Ironman 70.3 in November along with partner Karen Maddock and he has now set his sights on the ultimate challenge, a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2 km marathon run in New Zealand.

Whitsunday Triathlon Club President Mick Kimpton said the club was busy planning for their major annual event, the Coral Sea Marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival on July 26 and 27 next year.

“Our Coral Sea Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon has established itself as a triathlon like no other in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef and the 2024 event will be bigger and better than ever with an elite field of female and male professionals already nominated,” he said.

“With an amazing course on the shores of the Coral Sea and views of the Whitsunday islands this weekend in the tropical live music capital of Queensland has turned into an event not to be missed.

“Bring the whole family for some winter fun in the sun and enjoy racing with a top pro field and a weekend of events including Kids Triathlon, Ocean swims and the best after party ever,” Mr Kimpton said.

an you believe that Christmas has been and gone and all the pots have been put away because New Years Eve is over and we are into 2024?

form whilst the lovely Jill Spencer showed everyone that she’s performing as good as ever with a 30-9 match winning performance.

This is going to be a fabulous year and all the members of our little club at ABBC would like to wish everyone a sensational year ahead.

We will continue with bowling only on Wednesday and Sunday until school starts up again. We have an Australia Day big game being organised by Margo Stanley on Friday 26th and names should be in soon.

We were still playing bowls over the holiday period, and it was Bobby Spees who shone like a high beam at night time with a masterful display of accuracy and precision firstly with Mark Mawson teaming up to beat all on comers and secondly with the back to best form Rick Galea with an outstanding victory.

Last Wednesday it was Russell Jackson whom was devastating and proved how his title of best deaf bowler in Queensland was no fluke with an outstanding performance with Mark Mawson and he completely overwhelmed the opposition with Mae and Herb Secomb, our oldest bowlers watching the proceedings and were overjoyed with the improvement and standard of our bowlers.

Sunday afternoon saw another big role up with 22 bowlers competing for the prizes on offer, whilst Liz McManus won the prestigious Health Hub award. It was an excellent performance, a team victory ably led by Betty Nicole at skipper with Arthur McManus at lead in outstanding
