Mackay’s home spun rugby league sensation Jaxon Purdue gave a glimpse to the future with an eye-catching debut for North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL Pre-Season Challenge last weekend.

Lining up at fullback against the Brisbane Broncos at BB Print Stadium, the ground

where he cut his teeth in the Mackay Junior League, the versatile rookie showed his class in a 46-20 trial loss.

The St Patrick’s College graduate had the local crowd in raptures after swooping on a loose ball and scooting 90 metres to score a spectacular solo try in the dying moments. Purdue, an emerging half who represented

Queensland Schoolboys and the Junior Ma roons last season, is one of a batch of Mackay juniors contracted to the Cowboys club. Head coach Todd Payten had no hesitation in blooding the talented colt in the Cowboys opening trial and tips a bright future for the Mackay Norths Devils product.

Another Year Wiser?

As I typed this heading, I accidentally wrote ‘wider’ instead of ‘wiser’, and had a chuckle, thinking that was perhaps a more accurate depiction of another year around the sun.

I’m not sure if we really do get wiser with age, I tend to find myself forgetting almost as much as I’m learning, but I do believe we have a deeper appreciation for moments of authenticity.

During my birthday week I was very fortunate to have my cup filled in many ways.

First stop: the Gold Coast, where I danced my heart out at a P!NK concert on my birthday, proving that age is just a number when you've got killer dance moves and a penchant for sequins.

Being an older parent does give me the opportunity to find my childhood joy again. At Dreamworld, I found myself transported back to my own youth, reliving the magic through my son’s unbridled enthusiasm. It was a reminder that age is just a number, and the true essence of life lies in cherishing each mo-

ment with childlike wonder. And filling my friendship cup, the Company of Women luncheon hosted by the fabulous Jo from Kickass Women was just the inspirational soiree I needed to get myself back on my feet after a bout of gastro (thanks daycare). Surrounded by a squad of fierce, fabulous females, I couldn't help but feel like I'd stumbled into my own version of "The Golden Girls" (minus the retirement home and questionable fashion choices). Seriously though, this bi-monthly luncheon is a fabulous place to be uplifted by the success of other women around you.

As the candles melted away on my birthday cake (seriously, who thought it was a good idea to put that many candles on a single cake?), I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the journey that is life. Sure, there may be a few more wrinkles and grey hairs along the way, but each one tells a story.

In a selfless act, Janine has brought joy to Katie, the lucky recipient of a P!NK concert ticket, with a thoughtful gift of spending money for her upcoming trip to Townsville.

Katie, who has been facing her own challenges, found solace and support through the airwaves of the STAR101.9 brekkie show with Scotty and Kaley. Janine, touched by Katie's story, decided to make a difference in her life by gifting Katie an early birthday

present of money to spend on her trip, ensuring her 40th birthday celebration is one to remember.

As Katie prepares for her trip to Townsville, she carries with her not only the excitement of attending a P!NK concert but also the warmth of Janine's generosity. It's moments like these that remind us of the power of compassion and the ripple effect it creates, touching hearts and spreading joy to those among us in need.

Former Councillor Casey

It is with heavy hearts that the Mackay community remembers the life and service of Kevin Casey, a dedicated former councillor whose impact resonated deeply within the Mackay community.

Mr Casey embarked on his journey in local governance when he was first elected to the Mackay City Council in 2004, later transitioning to serve on the amalgamated Mackay Regional Council from 2008 to 2020. His commitment to public service spanned 16 years, during which he devoted himself to addressing the needs of the community he loved. Kevin's tenure witnessed the passage of four mayors, six CEOs, and 27 fellow councillors, reflecting his steadfast dedication and enduring presence in council chambers.

Hailing from a family with a longstanding interest in politics, Mr Casey inherited a legacy of civic engagement from his uncle, who served as a Member for Mackay for 26 years. Throughout his tenure, his proudest moments stemmed from his ability to listen to and uplift the voices of the community. In an interview with 7News Mackay upon announcing his retirement in 2020, Mr Casey reflected on his most cherished aspect of public service: "The thing I most enjoyed was helping the little person, who thought their problem was a mountain, and in actual fact it’s only a little pimple."

As well as being a devoted husband and fa-

ther, he was a driving force behind the Mackay Regional Council's sports expo, a unique event that he chaired with passion and dedication.

On Sunday, February 11, 2024, Kevin Casey passed away from acute respiratory failure due to stage four metastatic lung cancer.

A host of councillors paid their respects to Mr Casey online and at his funeral service which was held last Friday.

Cr Alison Jones served two terms on council with Mr Casey and said he will be sadly missed.

“Kev was a man that did what he said he would, always honouring a gentleman handshake. He led by example, and it was that, that I admired about him,” Cr Jones said.

Deputy Mayor Karen May has known Mr Casey since 2004 also served with him on council for eight years. She conveyed her condolences to his wife, Tricia, and their children.

“Kevin was a great advocate and champion of the North Queensland Games,” Cr May said.

During his 16 years in local government, he played a huge role in making sure our com-

munity had the opportunity to compete at the highest level that the games provided. He was also a great community councillor always making himself available to meet with community members.

Cr Belinda Hassan didn’t serve with Mr Casey however has known him and his family for many years.

“Kev was the epitome of a community-focussed Councillor,” Cr Hassan said.

He served his community tirelessly, and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

“I certainly looked up to him as a role model, and admired the time and effort he put into everything.

“A good man, who will be sadly missed.

Kevin's unwavering commitment to the betterment of Mackay will forever be remembered and cherished by the community he served so faithfully.

YOUNG LOCAL LEADS CHARITY GOLF DAY

For the second year in a row, inspiring 16-year-old girl Taya Rush, is hosting what is expected to be another exciting Charity Golf Day to raise much-needed funds for the RACQ CQ Rescue Chopper. After three years of on-going fund raising for the organisation, Ms Rush remains determined to help keep people living in remote and rural areas safe as she emphasises the importance of the local chopper, ensuring those in need have access to the service.

Helicopter services like RACQ CQ Rescue are commonly called out to aid individuals injured by rural accidents, boating accidents or any type of emergency situations that aren’t within the radius of a nearby hospital. At times, a helicopter transportation can be the only chance of survival for those in a critical condition.

The young and passionate fundraiser says she has chosen to raise money specifically for CQ Rescue Chopper for a number of reasons.

“One of the reasons why I find it so important is because my family now owns a farm,” she shared.

“The chopper is a community funded rescue service, that any one of us could need in an emergency. RACQ CQ Rescue attend a variety of emergency situations including car, boat, motorbike and bushwalking

accidents.”

Ms Rush competed in the 2023 RACQ CQ Rescue Talent search, hosted by Brooke Lee Modelling and was Crowned Overall Charity Princess for her fundraising efforts last year. Major sponsors supported her 2023 Charity Golf Day, such as Emerald Carrying Company who will be contributing once again at this year's 2024 event.

Last year’s charity event raised just over $13,000, with funds directly donated to RACQ CQ Rescue. Since last year’s success, Ms Rush has opened up more sponsorship opportunities for this year’s 2024 event, aiming for a bigger target of $20,000 to help keep the chopper in the air.

Participants can expect a day filled with fun at the upcoming RACQ CQ Rescue Charity Golf Day event this year. Starting from 11am on the 19th of April, partakers are encouraged to wear navy blue and yellow apparel to support the RACQ CQ Rescue organisational colours.

“Charity Golf days are a great way to network with other businesses in the area while enjoying a round of golf,” explained Ms Rush.

“Everyone last year had a great time on the golf course, with team bonding, meeting new people and supporting a charity at the

same time. It's always good fun after the golf to go back to the clubhouse for raffles and auctions.”

Sponsorships are available to help support the cause with a range of different options and packages to suit all who are willing to support. With priced sponsorships ranging from as little as $100 to as high as $2500. Donations are also appreciated if participants can’t attend the day but would like to still contribute.

A number of major local businesses have jumped on board to help donate to the good cause, including well know companies such as; Elastomers Australia, Absolute Enterprises, Frontline equipment, MI Scaffold, Emerald Carrying Company, Construction supplies, Rasmussen accountants, Ryan Taylor Carpentry, Degoey and Pims, just to name a few.

With a heartfelt desire to support the organisation, Ms Rush says she has received an immense amount of support from the community whilst raising funds for the rescue chopper in an attempt to continue to save lives across the region.

“The community have been very supportive of this event, most people in the Mackay community know someone who has needed the services of CQ rescue at some point, people understand how valuable the service is for the region and this is where

the community comes together,” Ms Rush emphasises.

Starting out small, Ms Rush originally began raising money for CQ Rescue by selling chocolates and socks, as well as organising children’s’ farm visits. Her dedication to expanding fundraising efforts is inspiring and encouraging as she continues to be a voice and an advocate for local and rural members of the community in need of a helicopter rescue service when accidents arise.

“I love being able to make a difference in the community,” she said.

“Deciding last year to try a golf day was a lot of hard work but it was also a huge success.

“You can make a difference if you put some time and effort in. It's important to contribute to the community,”

As Ms Rush continues to advocate for those in need of emergency assistance, she stands as a beacon of hope and compassion, demonstrating that even the smallest efforts can lead to significant change. With positions still available for sponsorship, now is the perfect time for businesses and individuals alike to join in supporting this worthy cause to keep our rescue choppers in the air. To contribute, contact the Mackay Golf Club for more information.

Save Eungella Petition Gains Traction While Decision On

Hydro Scheme Halted

Over 1000 residents have signed Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry’s petition to ‘Save Eungella’ and halt the proposed Pioneer Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project.

Ms Landry said this was a clear sign that Queenslander’s don’t want the government to sacrifice the unique environment of the Eungella region for their renewable energy plan.

“In just over two months, more than 10,000 Queenslanders have signed my petition to call on Labor to stop pushing forward with their plans to decimate the Pioneer Valley and Eungella region by flooding 937 hectares of pristine rainforest wilderness,” she stated.

“This is not just a project which will have enormous ramifications to those living and working in the Eungella region also the impact this project will have on the unique wildlife and plants that are found

in the region, many of which are endemic to the Eungella region.

“For many, day trips and holidays to visit the stunning Eungella National Park are embedded in their childhood memories and are horrified to learn this could all very well be under water for state Labor’s 80 per cent by 2035 renewable energy targets to appease inner city voters,” Ms Landry said.

The State Government have announced they will not be making any financial decision on the Pioneer Burdekin Pumped Hydro Scheme until after the October State election.

“The Eungella community are in limbo about their future and Labor are stringing them along by keeping the future of this project a secret. I will continue to push for Labor to listen to the more than 10,000 Queenslanders and stop this ludicrous plan of destruction,” Ms Landry said.

MACKAY AIRPORT ACCOMMODATION PLAN PROGRESSES

Plans for a major accommodation precinct at Mackay Airport continue to progress.

A forum has been scheduled for Tuesday March 12, enabling local employers to learn more about the proposed development.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to outline their preferences for the precinct, including the size and layout of apartments, and how long their workers may need to reside there. The concept is aimed at relieving the critical strain on workforce accommodation options across the region, which is impacting employers, their operations and overall economic viability, according to key stakeholders.

Mackay Airport Head of Operations Adrian Miles said the workshop in March would be an important step toward bringing the accommodation precinct to fruition.

“Getting everyone together will enable the team behind this exciting project to set the scene, provide more details about the plan and also answer questions,” he said.

“We are also keen to hear more from local employers, to understand exactly how the precinct can benefit their operations, and their desires and preferences for the project, so we truly maximise its potential and ensure the precinct is strategically purpose-built.”

“As a crucial gateway to the region, Mackay Airport is committed to supporting our community and the region’s economic growth.”

The accommodation would be located within the airport precinct, offering convenient access to the terminal and industrial areas.

Rob Cocco, Chief Executive Officer of Regional Development Australia Greater Whitsundays, said the region needed a long-term solution to its workforce accommodation shortage.

“Local employers from industries across our region tell us that lack of housing for workers is ultimately affecting their bottom line,” he said.

“We believe the proposed accommodation at Mackay Airport would help to relieve this pressure and also enable businesses to better expand their operations, in line with demand.

Let’s work together to make this precinct happen and help to future proof our local workforce and regional economy.”

The Mackay Airport Accommodation Precinct Workshop will take place from 7.30am – 9.30am on Tuesday 12 March at the Ibis Mackay Hotel. Catering will be provided. To register, please visit humanitix.com and search ‘Mackay Airport Accommodation’ or email tonia@gwcommunities.org.au

MEET JAMAY From Reef Catchments

Jamay’s family has long been intertwined with Reef Catchments, dating back to our days as the Mackay Whitsunday NRM Group. From attending the Reef Catchments Emersion Training Camp at Action Challenge Bloomsbury at the tender age of 8, Jamay has been actively engaged in sharing Traditional Knowledge with fellow Reef Catchments staff.

“I remember on more than one occasion that Mum had to bring me into the Reef Catchments office because I would pretend to be sick, so I would not have to go to school. I remember thinking that the RCL staff at the time were the coolest people in the world. They would chat, play games and even gave me the odd job to do. From then I always knew I wanted to work at Reef Catchments.”

Now, more than 10 years later she holds the role of Project Officer for the NRM organisation. Working with Reef Catchments Jamay has a pathway to improve connections and shared knowledge between Indigenous

and Non-Indigenous Australians in the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac (MWI) region.

ENVIRONMENT & COMMUNITY

For Jamay and her community, the environment holds profound significance.

“I believe that Mother Earth was created for us to live on and look after, and due to urbanisation of vital areas like wetlands, I feel a profound duty as a proud Koinjmal youth to aid in the restoration of our planet’s health.

Reef Catchments are very good at what they do, and that is to sustain, protect and improve the Natural Resources of our area. The organisation shares the same vision and values as me, and it is so awesome to work with like-minded people.”

Currently, Jamay is collaborating with Yuwibara Traditional Owners to develop a seasonal calendar—a valuable educational resource for schools, NRM organisations, and rangers alike. She eagerly anticipates its

unveiling, confident in its ability to both inspire and educate.

“I’m really excited to share the calendars with the community because it gives a bit of an insight on what indicators the Yuwi Tradtional Owners look for when managing land & sea Country.”Jamay.

Moreover, she recently conducted a drone training session with the Yuwi rangers, aiming to equip them with the skills necessary for surveillance, monitoring, public awareness, and education initiatives.

“The drone training with the Yuwi Rangers went really well. Even though we taught them the very basics on how to operate a drone, it was very fulfilling to help them upskill so they can be the best they can be.”

to life.”

HEALTHY COUNTRY PLAN

In addition to her work with Yuwibara Traditional Owners, Jamay is actively engaged in crafting a Healthy Country Plan alongside her family, the Koinjmal people of Koinmerburra Country.

“The Healthy Country Plan is important because it is not only a plan where our goals and visions are laid out but it is also an opportunity to get all the family in one room to discuss how we can make these visions come

This plan serves as a blueprint for the future, facilitating discussions on the aspirations for our Traditional Lands and the strategies needed to achieve them.

Through collaborative efforts with Reef Catchments, Ellie Bock, Kevin Blackman from Regional Advisory & Innovation Network, and the Traditional Owners, significant strides have been made, with the completion of the Plan slated for the end of 2024.

Mackay-Whitsunday Extension Forum

Thirty-two sugarcane extension and industry staff working across the Mackay-Whitsunday region came together to attend the MackayWhitsunday extension forum held in Walkerston. The forum provided a platform to bring together stakeholders to engage with regional projects, highlight achievements, share updates, and discuss lessons learnt.

Extension and industry members turned out to hear updates from seven water quality projects under the Mackay-Whitsunday Water Quality Program, new sugarcane paddock trials under the Queensland Government Paddock to Reef Program, a local SRA low-cost irrigation automation project and the Great Barrier Reef Foundations sugarcane innovation projects.

The forum presentations were split over four key focus areas including water quality trails and monitoring, irrigation and innovation, pesticides, and nutrients management and data recording platforms.

Industry and extension staff highlighted challenges associated with the delivery of land management and the adoption of new practices and shared experiences on how best to support growers when providing extension support.

With an eye on the future, the Mackay Whitsunday Water Quality Program Growers Annual Growers Forum is scheduled to be held in March. It will provide an opportunity for the Mackay-Whitsunday cane growers to engage with regional projects.

Couple Fighting Leukemia

Fall Victim To Heartless Theft

In a sad and unfair second blow, a young Mackay couple who are currently going through a cancer battle, have had their camping gear stolen from underneath their house just days before they were due to make a bucket-list camping trip.

Lilijana and Jedd, had been bravely fighting Jedd’s leukemia diagnosis together when the camping gear was swiped from their North Mackay home.

21-year-old Jedd was diagnosed with leukaemia in July 2023 and in an attempt to experience normality, the couple were set to celebrate Jedd’s birthday weekend away camping before he undergoes bone marrow treatment in Brisbane.

The camping gear was gifted to Jedd as a present for his 21st birthday and Lilijana says, “There’s only so many knock-backs you can take, and we really did feel quite defeated after this one.”

Turning to social media, Lilijana’s mother Nicole made a Facebook post in an attempt to find out any information about the stolen goods. She says the family hadn’t even had time to contact police as the couple had medical appointments throughout the morning of the incident.

Lilijana’s mother Nicole posted, “Everything was brand new and still in packaging so if anybody sees or hears of anything that could be related to these items being taken, please contact police.”

Many locals voiced their disgust upon hearing the news and were furious at the perpetrators.

Although there has been no information provided regarding the whereabouts of the stolen goods, many community members generously offered donations.

Some even offered to lend their camping goods to the couple for the weekend.

Other locals kindly offered to donate to a local fishing and camping store to renew their stolen items.

“Thank you to Wayne at BCF Mackay who has offered to do what he can to help Lilly and Jedd replace a couple of items so we can try and get them camping again,” Nicole commented.

Jedd’s colleagues at his workplace have also initiated a raffle to ease the financial strain associated with his leukemia treatment.

Recognising the significant load of medical expenses and emotional stress, they aim to raise $30,000 to cover Jedd’s treat-

ment, accommodation, and other fundamental costs during this challenging period.

Lachlan Cooke, CEO of Tropical Coast Plumbing, said it was important to support Jedd during these circumstances, highlighting the difficulty of managing expenses amidst his health crisis.

“It was immediate that we had to do something, he’s a second-year apprentice and it’s hard enough to make ends meet as an apprentice, let alone when you’ve been diagnosed with leukemia,” Mr Cooke says.

Jedd is currently on his fourth round of chemotherapy and is now at Townsville hospital undergoing treatment.

Despite the heartless theft and the additional challenges, the incident has brought, the support and generosity of the local community have served as a beacon of hope for Lilijana and Jedd.

With the outpouring of love and assistance from friends, family, and even strangers,

they are reminded that they are not alone in their fight. As they continue to endure the rigors of Jedd’s treatment, their determination to persevere remains unwavering. Together, they stand as a testament to the strength of their spirit and the power of unity in overcoming life’s greatest trials.

“He’s a fighter, he’s so strong and he knows once he gets through this, he’ll look back at this time in his life and be so proud of himself,” Lilijana says.

New Sarina Hospital Nearing Completion Networking Night At Scenic Sarina Beach

The construction of the new Sarina Hospital is reaching completion and preparations are now well underway for a move from 1 Hospital Street to the new site in April 2024.

Executive Director Public Health and Rural Services Terry Johnson said the Sarina project team and others throughout Mackay Hospital and Health Service were working hard to affect a smooth transition.

“This is an exciting time for our Sarina Hospital staff and others across the health service who are busy ensuring all the many aspects of the new operation are in place as we move rapidly towards the transition to our new facility on Brewer’s Road,” Ms Johnson said.

“The construction phase is almost complete, and we then move onto the commissioning phase where we oversee the fit-out of new equipment, finalise fittings and furnishings and undertake staff training in digital technology.

“We look forward to providing an opportunity for members of the Sarina community to take a look at the new hospital be-

fore we commence operations at an Open Day to be held at the end of March.”

Sarina Hospital Director of Nursing Pauline Maude is the Mackay Hospital and Health Service (HHS) project lead for the redevelopment.

“I find the project build fascinating,” she said.

“There are so many players involved – architects, consultants, the builders, project management in Brisbane and building and IT teams in Mackay.

“As we move into the commissioning stage, we will roster a minimum number of staff for the new hospital, for those few weeks before we move in.

“We want to ensure every single staff member has the opportunity to go into their new workplace before we make the final move. We are also looking forward to showing off our new facility to our community.”

Keep an eye on the Mackay Hospital and Health Service Facebook page and website at www.mackay. health.qld.gov.au for more details on the hospital open day.

REVITALISED WARDS FOR PALLIATIVE CARE PATIENTS

Palliative care nurses at the Mackay Base Hospital’s G2 Ward have unveiled the first stage of their plan to improve the clinical environment for their long stay and palliative patients, with the installation of new wallpaper, decorating the walls of the ward.

Nurse educator Dee Miller said the group had been working on a plan to wallpaper the walls in two rooms with beautiful scenes for those who are confined to bed for long periods of time.

“Room 21 on G2 now features a wallpaper image of Cedar Creek Falls, and Room 22 features a beautiful beach scene,” she said. “They are five metres by five metres and they look amazing!

“We’ve had quite a few staff coming to take a look and they love it.

Ms Miller said the aim was to provide a less

clinical environment to particularly benefit palliative care patients.

“These rooms can be utilised by any of our long-stay patients, but we will prioritise them for palliative patients who are often confined to bed.”

“We also want to thank our Director of Nursing Emma Hess, Mackay Hospital Foundation for the funding, and Blair Signs & Print for the installation,” Ms Miller said.

The team of palliative care nurses call themes the ‘Palliative Passionate Nurses’ and are made up of Dee Miller, Paris Macdonald, Beck Ogilvie, Abby Heazlewood, Vanessa Engstrom, Millie Berardi, and Rosie Proctor, with many ideas left to be brought to life, for the ward.

Following stages of the revitalisation from the Palliative Nurses will be unveiled as they continue their plans.

Recognising Talent CROSSROAD ARTS RECEIVE 5 AWARD NOMINATIONS

Celebrating the 2023 major production

Breathe In, Crossroad Arts have hit the jackpot after receiving five nominations in the Queensland’s prestigious Matilda Awards.

Crossroad Arts is a local Mackay based inclusive arts organisation, recognised as a leading inclusive arts practice in Queensland throughout the duration of 25 memorable years in the region. Those involved in the organisation are at the forefront of current shifts happening nationally in the inclusive arts space.

Breathe In is a disability-led, unique project incorporating poetry, live music and projection to reveal the fine line between both connection and isolation.

Co-creator Brenden Borellini says, “Breathe In is about survival and we hope the audience feel connected by me sharing my story as a Deafblind person and seeing how we can communicate and survive in the unknown world.”

This collaborative poetic piece is portrayed by star performers such as Georgia Cranko, from Melbourne, Victoria and Brenden Borellini, based in Mackay, Queensland.

Lead performers and co-creators Georgia Cranko and Brenden Borellini give a captivating, yet at times alarming perspective of how people who use alternative communication survive in a world that can be startling, relentless and inaccessible.

Crossroad Arts received a pronounced nomination for Best Main Stage Production.

Co-Creators Brenden Borellini, Georgia

Cranko and Alison Richardson received a nomination for the Lord Mayor’s Award

for Best New Australian Work.

Alison Richardson was nominated for Best Direction.

Autumn Skuthorpe and Josh Notting received a nomination for Best Composition and/or Sound Design and Freddy Komp was nominated for Best Video Design.

Autumn Skuthorpe, CEO and Artistic Director shared her thoughts, acknowledging the great efforts those involved in the performance have shown by their underlining dedication, resulting in multiple deserved recognitions.

“Crossroad Arts is incredibly proud of Breathe In and that our work has been nominated for 5 Matildas, especially being a regional based theatre company. We are thrilled to see the stories of Brenden and Georgia celebrated and acknowledged by the wider sector and the recognition of their work is so well deserved.”

The Matilda Awards celebrates and promotes the excellence of the Queensland theatre industry. This year the awards will be held on February 26th at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Stray RescuedKittensFrom Local Business

In a touching rescue effort, a group of four tiny kittens, estimated to be around two weeks old, have been discovered seeking refuge under wooden pallets at a local Mackay business. Responding swiftly, the team at Mackay Pet Rescue Inc made it their priority to provide immediate care, arriving on-site shortly after receiving a phone call about the situation. With much to their surprise, no injuries were found. The four tiny kittens were placed on warm towels and a heating pad. Soon after they were taken into the hands of a foster carer at the pet rescue sanctuary.

Efforts to reunite them with their mother were unsuccessful as the large number of feral cats in the area made it impossible to identify the mama cat. Despite the setback, the kittens were placed under the care of an experienced foster carer, housed in a large area where they will receive roundthe-clock care and food every two hours for the next few weeks.

Expressions of interest for adoption will be considered once the kittens reach the age of six weeks, due to their fragile state. Their journey to recovery will be closely monitored, with updates provided on their progress.

Through the selfless actions of the team at Mackay Pet Rescue Inc and the unwavering support of their foster carer, these kittens have been granted a second chance at life.

Two disastrous problems have hit turtles: 1. The destruction of feeding grounds is extensive. Floodwater has deposited pesticides, sediment and fresh water on seagrass. As a result, large feeding areas have been decimated along the coast. The result is large-scale starvation and strandings. 2. A terrible, deforming virus, fibropapilloma virus (FP) is affecting turtle populations, especially young, green turtles. Turtles are falling sick and dying. PROPERTY POINT

When I was a kid my father would often hurl the accusation at me that I was “as slow as a wet week”.

Partly that was because fathers were less patient in those days but it is also true that the description would emerge when I had been asked (let’s be honest, in those days it was an order) to do something I didn’t really want to do. Typically, that would be a boring chore of some sort.

I can’t remember rain interfering much with my activities, limited as they were to kick a ball and ride a bike whether it was rain, wind or shine, but it is true that a wet week during school holidays did seem to drag on forever and the saying “as slow as a wet week” made sense.

Wind the clock forward and when I returned to work in mid-January this year it was a wet week, but I can tell you it was anything but slow and boring.

I had half a dozen fresh listings ready to go and as soon as they were uploaded to the real estate portals and on the market the activity was intense. Just keeping up with the buyer inquiries was hard enough, let alone arranging inspections.

The inquiries and activity meant the wet week was almost moving too fast

0408 672 703

for me to get everything done.

On my first Saturday of open homes on the 13th of January, buyers were dashing into my properties drenched but unbowed by the weather.

They ran from their cars shielded by umbrellas or simply with towels over their heads, determined to see the properties. I got more than 20 groups at every open house that day.

I reckon I could have added an obstacle course - with nasty Raiders of the Lost Ark-type challenges involving trap doors, snakes and ladders to get past - and I still would have had good numbers.

My second week back was also wet, and it also whizzed by in a frenetic flash of buyer inquiries and multiple offers on properties.

And, as the year starts to roll on, it is clear we have a strong market at the moment with good buyer demand and their enthusiasm won’t be diminished by a wet season.

There are a mix of buyers - young people getting into the market, people moving to Mackay for work and lifestyle opportunities, older people moving here to be close to kids and grandkids and the usual array of people downsizing or upsizing.

But there is a new breed of beast in the

David@gardian.com.au

In a world where misleading and damaging influences can have a major impact on our community youth, children and young adults are often left soul-searching for their identity or trying to swim against a tide of stresses and are unsure of how to work through their hardships.

In times of despair, it’s important to be led in a positive direction of faith and encouragement.

With this in mind, Christian communities are on a mission to help spread the good news that through God and faith, we can find reconnection, salvation and fullness

jungle, one that was sighted over the past year or two, but which has now grown bigger, hungrier, and more determined … the southern investor.

Investors from southern states have worked out that Mackay’s relatively high rents and low sale prices offer an excellent yield for investment properties.

They see an opportunity to get a very good, positively geared return on a property that is much cheaper and more accessible than in southern markets. They are often willing to pay more than locals because they see the value even if they pay 10 or 20 grand more to get the property.

The mix of buyers and level of activity is creating opportunities for sellers because there is not much on the market … plenty of buyers but not many properties for sale.

I am getting phone calls from buyers’ agents from down south and investors saying they are ready to buy in Mackay and to let them know as soon as I get new listings.

The rules of demand and supply tell us that there are good opportunities for sellers right now because they don’t have much competition.

Just like a wet week, that will end one day.

With Swift mania sweeping the country, Blink 182 returning to the country for the first time since 2013, Pearl Jam announcing an Aussie tour and of course P!nk headed to Townsville next month there is truly something for everyone in the gig circuit right now.

Now the growing chorus of people yucking other’s yum is frustrating because when you think about the artist or entertainment that is your favourite, you cannot wrap your head around why others wouldn’t get on the boat with you. Interest is subjective to the individual.

I look at all these artists and while some of them I do love I wouldn’t say I’m a super fan by any means, but it reminded me of freshly 18-yearold Kaley, a student at Holy Spirit College, saved all my money from working at Eagle Boys Walkerston, flew to Brisbane to go to Rihanna’s

September 2013 Diamonds World Tour solo. No regrets about that decision and would do it again in a heartbeat. The moment she hit the stage was euphoric, I sung my littles heart out, I cried, she touched my hand, and it will be a concert I’ll never forget.

Honestly, I’m so excited for the millions of people who will be having that with their favourite artists, especially in a post COVID world where there was a time when we thought we may never get the chance to see these people in person ever again.

So whether you’re into Swiftie, Blink, P!nk, Pearl Jam or anything else – I hope you have the best time and create memories that you’ll never forget to the sound tracks of your life. And if you’re a hater… I hope your favourite artists never come here because we have no time for negativity. Let people live their best life.

ODancing With Heart Tutti Presents HOT NOTE

n Friday 15th March, well-known local identities will take to the stage to display their talents with the support of Choreographer Dolly Louw and back-up dancers from Fame Talent School. One participant will walk away with the coveted Mirror-Ball Trophy.

This night of entertainment is all for a great cause, raising money to support the Mackay Hospital Foundation.

Over the next four weeks we will profile two dancers each week. First up, Josh and Chloe.

CHLOE GUNTHORPE

Chloe Gunthorpe, a Director of Next Accounting, will be busting a move at the 2024 ‘Dancing with Heart’ Mackay Hospital Foundation.

With a client-focused approach, Chloe says she finds joy in helping businesses reach their goals whilst gaining trust, and often forming friendships with her clients along the way.

As Chloe dances her way through life, she finds confidence in expressing herself through movement. While exploring various dance styles, she embraces the opportunity to step out of her comfort zone.

“A lot of my dance moves require me to feel confident about myself – so it’s been nice to explore that,” she says.

Chloe admits that navigating lefts and rights on the dance floor can sometimes prove more challenging than crunching numbers in her profession.

“I’m good with numbers, but not directions apparently,” she laughed.

Beyond her professional endeavours, Chloe values the impactful work of the Mackay Hospital Foundation.

“The Mackay Hospital Foundation is so integral to our community and the health of our community.

“I am a huge believer in supporting the community and if I get to learn a few dance moves along the way and create some more connections and memories –than bonus!”

JOSH SMITH

As a Senior Account Executive with Elders Insurance, Josh Smith leads a whirlwind of diversity and excitement in the world of insurance. He provides a perspective of his day-to-day life through a lens of enthusiasm and a vibrant touch to his professional journey.

“One day, we're soaking in the tranquil scenery of Collinsville, chatting with local farmers helping them with farm insurance and the next, we're diving into the bustling world of Moranbah, assisting contractors in the mining sector to navigate the labyrinth of insurance intricacies.

“It's a rollercoaster ride where predictability takes a backseat, and every day unveils a new adventure.”

When it comes to dance, Josh has embraced the challenge of keeping up with Miss Dolly from Fame Talent Dance School and acknowledged it as an inspiring fitness revolution.

Josh says he has channelled his inner Patrick Swayze and mastered the "Swayze Shuffle."

“It's a delicate blend of attempting to recreate Patrick Swayze's smooth moves from Dirty Dancing while realizing my coordination might need some serious movie magic.

“But hey, it's all in good fun, right?”

““I'm passionate about ensuring that the money raised goes where it's needed most, supporting our local hospitals and healthcare initiatives though the Mackay Hospital Foundation,” he says.

Tutti is a vocal ensemble under the direction of Jan Whelan OAM. Jan is known around Mackay, not only for her work with the Mackay Choral Society and Mackay Musical Comedy Players, but also her accompanying work with soloists, school choirs and music ministries. MECC ON THE MOVE WITH THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY BAND Get School Holidays Sorted With MECC’s September Weekender

The Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) is moving offsite, with a performance from the Australian Army’s 1 RAR Band at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens on Friday, 2 March, 2024.

The decision to host the performance from Townsville’s Band of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (known as 1 RAR Band) at the offsite venue was made following the closure of the MECC’s Auditorium, due to storm damage over the Christmas period.

Director Community and Client Services Janine McKay said the Defence unit’s strong sense of community was something the MECC could not pass up on.

“We have been collaborating with the band to bring music workshops to schools, and a preview performance at Caneland Central,” Ms McKay said. “We’re fortunate to have skilled staff who are able to deliver offsite events; and hosting free, live music, with the talented 1RAR Band at Meadowlands Amphitheatre is something we’re proud to offer our community,” she said.

A show-stopping performance from the Australian Army’s 1 RAR Band.

Photos supplied

One RAR Band supports all three Brigade units, other Defence organisations, and the wider community. The band comprises a 10-piece ensemble (drums, trumpets, trombones and saxophones) alongside vocalists, playing contemporary music that blends modern beats with Australian classics. After success following their Sunset Vibes performance at the Winton Outback Festival in 2023, the band are excited to bring their music to Mackay. The MECC are encouraging all ages to come along and enjoy this free, family-friendly night out.

“This will be a memorable night out. Bring some chairs or a blanket and pack a picnic. We will also have a variety of food trucks available for those looking for savoury or desserts options,” Ms McKay said.

“Bob's Your Auntie"

Kucom Theatre's highly-anticipated April production of "Bob's Your Auntie" has unfortunately been postponed until 2025 due to casting challenges, particularly - the "shortage of males" syndrome that periodically plagues all community theatre groups from time to time. Fortunately, Director Maureen Coleman has promptly adapted to the minor setback by selecting the next best performance, a classical thriller "The Murder Game" to fulfill the April vacancy.

Starring Performers like Dennis Rozekrans, Asta Ryan, Lani Seaton, and Michael Brennan will play alongside the celebrated English playwright and screenwriter, Constance Cox. This special production will open at Kucom Theatre on April 11 for a two-week season. Don't miss the chance to be captivated by "The Murder Game" and support our local community production at Kucom Theatre this April. Bookings are now open at https:// events.humanitix.com/the-murder-game.

"The Murder Game" – a thrilling performance to be held this April

Launched in 2020, the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre is eager to bring back the 2024 instalment of the September Weekender, the popular event that keeps the entire family entertained.

Scheduled for the September School Holidays, this weekend extravaganza features the best of the best, from adults only evenings, musical icons, and circus performance.

Now, what’s on the agenda?

Day one will see award-winning cabaret, Briefs Factory, alongside celebrated songbird, Sahara Beck, return to the stage, following their sold-out shows.

Day two includes Australia Idol judge and iconic musician Marcia Hines to perform her album, ‘Still Shining’, plus many more of her hits.

Day three is kid-centric, including the Brats Carnival, a wild circus with fantastic music, acts of amazement and eye-popping party tricks, as part of the DBCT Kids Theatre Season.

Venue and Events Operations Manager, Jemma Carey, said the weekend is a celebration of live events, programmed to provide the ultimate weekend of live entertainment.

“We have programmed on these dates to encourage visitation to our region, three events over three days during the school holidays will provide both locals and visitors the chance to experience some of Australia’s best entertainers live in Mackay,” Ms Carey said.

“The first September Weekender took place over three-years ago, and we still get requests to bring it back. We’re excited by this announcement and the MECC team is excited to bring this flamboyant event to Mackay in September” Ms Carey said.

September Weekender events are currently on with tickets available at www.themecc.com.au

BOATING

Aselfless group of eager participants met at the Mackay Marina at 5am, on Sunday morning to engage in a 60km Mackay Dragon Boat Club Paddle-A-Thon, raising vital funds for the prevention of homelessness, specifically to Chances Op Shop and Café.

With issues like inflation on the rise, the financial struggles and housing crisis continues to worsen, leaving more and more vulnerable locals out on the streets. It is for this reason that a not-for-profit organisation like Chances Op Shop and Café is so desperately needed to provide ongoing funds to continue to do their good works.

To help fundraise, Mackay Dragon Boat Club decided to create a special Sunday morning Dragon Boating event, raising both awareness and funds for the many effected by homelessness in the region.

Long term members of the Dragon Boat Club spoke on their personal experiences of the waterborne sport, encouraging all ages and fitness levels to give it a go.

Club Secretary, Dale Cramer expresses her love for the sport commenting, “I love that it’s a team sport, we are a very close knit, social team and we love to compete together.

“Whether you’ve got knee problems, back problems, anyone can have a go and you can sit down and work all the muscles from your knees to your neck.”

Club member of four years, Ron Del describes the variety of participants involved and the reasoning behind her ongoing participation.

“I joined for the friendship and the exercise, we’re like a family and it’s a beautiful marina to paddle in.

“We’ve got all ages joining, from a 70-yearold, who’s ready to jump in, right down to our youngest 27-year-old.”

Ron Del acknowledges the crucial importance of raising money and awareness for the cause stating, “The focus for today is we’re paddling for the people less fortunate than us.”

The team at Mackay Dragon Boat Club did not fall short of their efforts, after completing multiple laps around the Mackay Marina, showcasing their resilient dedication with welcoming smiles throughout the morning.

Congratulations to raffle winner Kylie who went home with the 4WD recovery kit from Bunzl Safety Paget.

A RACE AGAINST THE WEATHER FOR MACKAY ROAD RUNNERS

Despite the threatening stormy skies, over eighty runners kicked off at 6.30am last Sunday morning to race the annual 5km and 10km Rural View loop.  As runners crossed the finish line, Club Patron Col Meng OAM donated zooper doopers to cool down the devoted participants.

Club President Brendan Bishop welcomed many new and existing members to the first handicap points run of the year. Timekeeper and registration assistant, Arthur Dick and Julie Whibley had a big job ahead of them with an awesome number of members signing on ahead of their individual 5 km and 10 km events.

Mick Vivian, Mark McFadzen, Robin Stinson, Naomi Ballard, Alleny and Ollie Gorrion, Mel Esau, Ashlee Scott, Martin Lambert, Hamish and Shane Donnallen, Werner VanDerLinde, Michael Feenaghty,

Emma Johnson, Craig McGahey, Nick Rewald, George Hannaford and Toby Rule all contributed to the amazing performances on show.

This Sunday will be the running of the inaugural MAD Fitness Mackay 5km Club Championship event from Queen’s Park via Shakespeare Street entrance commencing at 6.30am sharp. The 5km Club Championship has been running since the inception of the club in 1976.

Thanks to Erin, Owner of Mad Fitness Mackay Gym who has donated cash prizes for the first three male and female winners of the 5km as well as for random draw prizes.

For future events, runners must be on time and registered in with the timekeeper prior to gun time, preferably 6.15am so that the timekeeper can sync all runners into the computer for 6.30am racing.
