AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US AT PARKSIDE PLAZA
In politics, it’s often the smallest victories that make the biggest impact. For Andrew Willcox, Federal Member for Dawson, 2024 has been a year of championing the people, and seeing those efforts transform lives.
Whether it’s securing crucial funding for volunteer organisations or advocating for a safer highway, Andrew’s work reminds us that real progress is about making sure every win counts—no matter how big or small.
And when he does have a win, it’s the community that reaps the rewards.
One of Andrew’s proudest achievements this year has been his work with Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Whitsundays. After successfully securing funding for the organisation last year, Andrew had the honour of officially opening their new Operations and Training Centre. It’s a facility that will significantly enhance VMR’s ability to serve the community and ensure the safety of those who enjoy the waters around the Whitsundays.
“The work that VMR Whitsundays do is crucial when it comes to keeping our boaties and fishers safe on the water,” Andrew shared.
The new facility will better equip VMR Whitsundays to handle day-to-day rescue operations and fullscale search and rescue efforts. For Andrew, it was a deeply fulfilling moment after months of hard work and advocacy.
“The volunteers deal with high-pressure situations to keep our waters safe, and this new centre means that the team at VMR Whitsundays will be better equipped to handle the challenges they face.”
Another key win this year was Andrew’s advocacy for families raising children with autism. He successfully secured $2 million in federal funding for the AEIOU Foundation, allowing them to expand their early intervention services by opening a new centre.
“I fought hard to secure that funding because I know how critical early intervention is for children with autism. This isn’t just about numbers on a page; it’s about giving families real hope and practical support,” Andrew said.
The Federal Member for Dawson’s commitment to safety isn’t limited to the water. One of his most pressing campaigns this year has been “Back Our Bruce”—a push for essential upgrades to the Bruce Highway. In particular, the section between Bowen and Home Hill has been identified as the most dangerous stretch of the entire highway, and Andrew has been vocal in calling for federal and
state governments to act.
“As someone who spends a lot of time on the Bruce Highway, travelling to meet with businesses and constituents in my electorate, I’ve experienced the dangers of the Bruce firsthand,” he said.
His concerns are shared by locals, many of whom have signed his petition demanding immediate action.
“It’s really the lifeblood for us. It’s the main artery from Brisbane to Cairns. It’s how our farmers get their produce to market, it’s how we all get our supplies from the cities, and it’s how we get our families home safely.”
Andrew is pushing for a long-term plan for the Bruce Highway that focuses not just on the southern end near Brisbane but addresses critical safety concerns in regional areas like Dawson.
“I’d like to see an actual plan for the Bruce, not just starting in the southeast corner and working its way up. We need to put in more overtaking lanes and begin dual-laning each way. I understand it’s a big project and won’t be done overnight, but there needs to be immediate improvement.”
While the long hours on the road are a downside to the job, Andrew says it’s the “touch points” with the community that keep him motivated.
“I really love talking to my constituents.
“The more I talk to people, the better prepared I am when I go to Canberra to fight for their needs.
“There’s nothing more powerful than standing up in parliament and delivering exactly what your community is telling you.”
This connection with the community extends far beyond legislative matters. Andrew is deeply committed to helping his constituents with everything from NDIS issues to immigration and passports through his local office in Mackay.
“We don’t send anyone away here. If someone comes in with a problem, we’ll try to help them, and if we can’t, we’ll steer them in the right direction.”
Andrew says that what frustrates him is when people assume he or his office can’t help without even asking.
“Give us a crack!
“Sometimes there are things we can do which may seem small but make a huge difference to people’s lives.”
As 2024 draws to a close, Andrew is already looking
ahead to the challenges of 2025. With a federal election looming, he’s more committed than ever to fighting for the people of Dawson. From securing better infrastructure to tackling the rising cost of living, he’s determined to ensure that the needs of regional Australians aren’t overlooked.
One of the issues at the top of his agenda is bringing back the Agricultural Visa, which was scrapped by the current government.
“Fruit and veg prices have soared because farmers can’t get the labour force needed to pick the produce.
“It’s falling on the ground and rotting in fields, and that’s driving up prices for consumers.”
Energy costs are another major concern, with businesses facing astronomical increases in their bills.
“When energy costs rise, everything else follows. We need to get this under control to ease the pressure on both businesses and household consumers.”
Andrew’s dedication to the community is rivalled only by his devotion to his family. His wife, Raylene, plays a pivotal role, helping him stay on top of political appointments, and their grown children, despite having spread their wings, remain close.
“At the beginning of the year, we managed to spend time with the kids in Canada,” Andrew shared.
“It might be our last big family holiday together as they start their own families.”
His youngest son, Tommy, recently moved to Wagga Wagga, where he’s now teaching kids with special needs after spending a year overseas. His daughter, Shannon, follows in her father’s political footsteps, working for Senator Susan McDonald. And eldest son Jack, a civil engineer lives with his wife Zoe and labrador Wally, just up the road in Townsville.
While Andrew hasn’t found much time this year for his favourite past time of fishing and crabbing, he looks forward to a quieter Christmas.
“I’ve done my time putting together trampolines and swing sets on Christmas Eve, so this year, I’m hoping to put a crab pot or two in the creek, put my feet up, and watch some cricket,” he said with a smile.
After a year of hard work and community wins, it’s a well-deserved break for a man who’s spent 2024 fighting for the people of Dawson—one victory at a time.

VISION FOR A FORWARD-THINKING FUTURE
With Mayor Greg
2024 has been a monumental year for Mackay, marked by major changes, significant projects, and a reinvigorated council. While the year began with a fresh set of faces taking their seats in the Mackay Regional Council chamber, it also saw the completion of several landmark initiatives. For Mayor Greg Williamson, it was a year of both triumph and personal reflection, as his dedication to the region continued to shine through despite personal challenges.
When discussing the year, Mayor Williamson doesn’t shy away from the fact that 2024 has been a transformative one, particularly with the introduction of six new councillors.
“One of the best things about having so many new councillors is the fresh and enthusiastic ideas they bring to the table. They question things and force us to rethink how things are done, which is invaluable,” he says.
This influx of new perspectives has helped breathe life into the council, pushing the team to re-evaluate processes and ensure they’re delivering more efficiently to ratepayers, especially in the face of rising costs.
Despite the council entering caretaker mode for the election, this year has seen Mackay steam ahead with several key projects, each a testament to the region’s growth and future potential. Mayor Williamson proudly points to the Finch Hatton Mountain Bike Track, which officially opened its first stage in April.
“We’re incredibly proud of the numbers we’ve seen, with over 104,000 visitors in the first three months,” he shares. This influx of visitors has firmly established the Pioneer Valley as a top-tier destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with the mayor especially excited about the success of the National
Williamson
Championships hosted by Rocky Trails.
“The feedback from the riders, most of whom were from out of town, was outstanding.”
The success of the Finch Hatton track has set the stage for Stage 2, a $30 million expansion that will include additional downhill wilderness trails from Eungella to Finch Hatton.
On the urban development front, the Northern Beaches Community Hub has made tremendous strides. After years of anticipation, 2024 saw the Federal Government contribute $15 million toward the project, allowing it to enter its construction phase. After the vital infrastructure was put in place for the project last year, construction has now started on the facility.
“People can finally see this vision for the Northern Beaches coming to life,” says Mayor Williamson.
The hub will include meeting rooms, playgrounds, and playing courts in its first stages, with future plans to add a library, aquatic centre, and commercial facilities.
Mackay is also poised to take a leadership role in the future of critical minerals research through Stage 2 of the Resources Centre of Excellence.
“We’ve committed $5 million toward the project, and the state government has matched that,” says Mayor Williamson. This strategic move aims to bolster Mackay’s role in the critical minerals sector by supporting research initiatives that enhance the understanding and viability of these essential resources, ultimately contributing to the futureproofing of the region’s economy.
While Mackay’s headline-grabbing projects are driving the region’s future, Mayor Williamson remains equally focused on local, day-to-day improvements.
The council has made significant changes in its parks and garden services, a much-needed response to community feedback from last year’s mowing issues.
“We’ve replaced much of our fleet with state-of-theart mowers, which need less labour and can cover larger areas,” Mayor Williamson explains. And in an innovative move, the council has introduced small mowing contracts for local businesses.
“This is a first for us, and it’s aimed at encouraging more community pride while also addressing last season’s grass concerns.”
Despite the challenges, Mayor Williamson reflects on how rewarding it is to lead a team that has embraced change and innovation.
“We’re focused on delivering a better return at a cheaper cost for the ratepayer. The cost of living and inflation issues we face are the same as any other business,” he says.
2024 has also been a deeply personal one for Mayor Williamson. His re-election campaign was one of his toughest yet, a hard-fought battle that was bittersweet. The joy of being elected was dulled by the loss of his father late last year. Mayor Williamson describes the emotional journey of saying goodbye to his father, who passed away at the age of 93.
His father had lived independently in his home until the age of 92 before spending his final 12 months in aged care at Kerrisdale. After suffering a stroke, doctors gave him just 24 hours to live, but he defied the odds, holding on for five more days.
“Those days were incredibly special,” Mayor Williamson reflects, “surrounded by family, sharing memories and celebrating his life while he was still with us.
“We played every one of Frank Sinatra’s songs about 25 times for him.”
As he looks ahead, Mayor Williamson and his wife, Annette, have set their sights on personal goals as well. They hope to explore some of the world’s best walking trails, with iconic routes like the Amalfi Coast and Camino de Santiago on their list of future adventures. These plans serve as a great incentive to stay fit.
What’s a common misconception about being mayor?
“The powers I have! It probably comes from television, where mayors are depicted as all-powerful. It never ceases to amaze me what people think I can do—like coordinate the traffic lights down Nebo Road.”
Is it true that Mackay’s mayor has never had regalia?
“That’s right. Since the first municipal council in 1870, no Mackay mayor has ever worn a robe or mayoral chain. Unlike Rockhampton, Cairns, and Townsville, where regalia is a tradition, Mackay has never adopted it. However, the one tradition that’s remained since day one is that our mayors are still addressed as ‘Your Worship,’ which continues to this day.”
What advice would you give to aspiring young leaders, like those in Mackay’s youth council?
“You’ve got to be passionate about listening to people. Leadership isn’t about saying, ‘I’m the leader, so you’ll listen to me.’ It’s about being a true representative of people. You also have to be realistic and, most importantly, just have a go. If you want to lead the crowd, you have to stand out from the crowd. That takes guts.”

A FOUNDATION OF SUCCESS A FOUNDATION OF SUCCESS
WITH MAYOR RY COLLINS
Bringing a fresh perspective and a determined enthusiasm to Council Chambers, Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins has certainly been a positive driving force for the community during the first eight months of his first term as Mayor. Reflecting proudly on his progress and with an eye on the future, Mayor Collins has a strategic focus on advancing the region.
With the future needs of the community in mind, Mayor Collins and Councillors have progressed a number of priority precinct projects like the Whitsunday Coast Airport Masterplan, and the commissioning of new Masterplans for Airlie Beach, Bowen Foreshore, Collinsville Community Hub, and a regional sportspark in Cannon Valley.
“As a first term Mayor, I am committed to building a prosperous future for our region,” said Mayor Collins.
“The recent creation of the Economic Development Advisory Group (EDAG) has been a catalyst initiative to drive proactive and sustainable economic growth across the Whitsundays – bringing together Council, community leaders, and business representatives to ensure our economic plans are aligned with the needs of the Whitsunday community.”
The opportunity to connect with the community on a deeper level stand as a memorable highlight for Mayor Collins over the past year, explaining that with each connection made, he can make better decisions for the community, and its future.
“2024 has been a year of coming together for the new Council and we are committing to a renewed strategic direction, where the foundations have been laid for the region to undertake significant progress and growth after years of being in recovery mode following Cyclone Debbie and the pandemic,” said Mayor Collins.
With 2025 on the horizon, Mayor Collins has plans to continue advocating for and working towards enhanced key infrastructure, improving community services and tackling affordable housing, and health and education facilities, especially with the upcoming Federal election.
“Building on the momentum we have created in the second half of this year, 2025 will see much of our strategic and planning work finalised and set an ambitious path forward for our region over the coming years.”
“I really want to see the rubber hit the road and you’ll see a strong push to attract investment, boost tourism, activate sustainable development, and further diversify the local economy through both council led initiatives, as well as supporting broader economic initiatives such as Airlie Skyway, the Bowen Orbital space port, and other regional business ventures.”
Mayor Ry Collins said that it is the community’s support which continues to drive, and motivate the hard work and dedication of both him and his Councillors in creating future focused plans for the Whitsundays.
“I was humbled that the community put their faith and trust in me to be Mayor, and it’s been an incredible experience so far,” Mayor Collins said.
“Serving the people of the broader Whitsundays, is something I take great pride in, and I’m committed to delivering positive outcomes for every town and every resident in our community.
“I have a strong focus on moving the region forward and it has been exciting to elevate and advance new critical and catalytic infrastructure that will form part of our future community needs and ambition.”

Year in Review – The Trudy Crowley Foundation
The words fall like stones in a silent room, heavy and irreversible. A diagnosis delivered by a doctor doesn’t arrive gently; it crashes in, turning life as you know it upside down.
The reality of cancer sinks in, casting an unsettling shadow over the world you knew just moments before. The fear begins to coil around you: fear of the unknown, of what’s to come, of what this means.
The medical jargon is endless, technical, and impossible to fully absorb, especially when every thought is clouded by worry. There is an instinctive need for something concrete, a step forward, a reassurance. But instead, there are waiting rooms, weeks between appointments, and despite having a loving circle of family and friends, a quiet feeling of loneliness settles in.
In a time when everyone is telling you to stay strong, inside you feel lost, disconnected—even from yourself. Your oncology team is kind and dedicated, but they, too, are only human in a system stretched thin. You find yourself wishing for a space where you’re not just another case to be managed, but a person facing something unimaginably tough. Somewhere to sit, where words don’t have to be rehearsed or fears brushed
aside. Somewhere to simply be.
This is where the Trudy Crowley Foundation steps in: not as another clinic or appointment, but as a haven of empathy, warmth, and connection. For people with any cancer diagnosis, and for their loved ones, this foundation provides the comfort of understanding.
Whether it’s a cup of tea in serene silence or a heart-to-heart with someone who has navigated a similar path before, the Foundation is there. In a time marked by vulnerability and uncertainty, it stands as a lifeline—restoring dignity, understanding, and the reminder that no one faces cancer alone.
Here, you’re not just a diagnosis; you’re a person, and in these walls, you find the strength to navigate the unknown with dignity and support.
This year, the Trudy Crowley Foundation has expanded its mission, deepening its commitment to supporting those navigating cancer in the Mackay community. Honouring the legacy of Trudy Crowley, who fought ovarian cancer with courage and compassion, the Foundation has introduced new faces, programs, and milestones—each a testament to its unwavering dedication.
One of the most significant moments came at the 2024 Touch of Teal Soiree, where over 300 attendees gathered, raising a remarkable $78,419.08. The evening was made even more special by the announcement that Levi Crowley, Trudy’s son, had joined the Board.
“Having Levi with us on this journey feels like closing a circle that started with Trudy’s vision,” shared Founding Director Jacquie Camilleri.
“He’s shown the same tenacity and warmth that his mum did, and he brings a renewed energy to our mission.”
Levi’s appointment symbolises a legacy of family support and resilience, with Jacquie adding, “He’s been volunteering with us for more than a year, and now, as a Board member, he’s helping us ensure that no one in Mackay has to face cancer alone, just as Trudy wanted.”
Joining Jacquie and Levi on the Board are Levi’s father, Damian Crowley and Sonia Crowley, with Aggie Murphy as Treasurer, Luke Phillips as Secretary and Pauline Townsend as Chair.
This year’s soirée also cast a poignant light on the need for additional palliative care options in Mackay—a need Trudy herself had fervently

advocated for during her life. The Foundation is now more committed than ever to creating a private palliative sanctuary—a place of peace, compassion, and dignity for those in their last stages of life. This sanctuary would work alongside the current palliative services, easing the strain on the healthcare system while providing patients with a tranquil, supportive environment.
“Our goal is to give families a place where their loved ones can pass with the comfort they deserve,” Jacquie shared.
The Foundation’s mission has only grown stronger in 2024, with its existing support programs continuing to offer unwavering care.
Two dedicated ovarian cancer and palliative care nurses, Chris Giannengelo, and Rosie Stannard, provide personalised, compassionate support both within and beyond the hospital. The Foundation’s counsellor, Rebecca Snell, is also on hand to help individuals and loved ones navigate the oftenoverwhelming emotional landscape of cancer.
Bridgeen Doherty, the Trudy Crowley Foundation’s Ovarian Cancer Ambassador, has had a profound impact on the lives of those affected by ovarian cancer. Diagnosed with Stage 3C high-grade serous carcinoma in December 2019, now advanced to Stage 4, Bridgeen has passionately championed awareness around ovarian cancer, encouraging women to learn about the symptoms and actively advocate for their health.
Since joining the foundation, Bridgeen has spearheaded the development of a vital support group for local ovarian cancer patients, and her wise words, “Know your body, know your normal” are now used regularly by the Foundation.
“It’s not just about the treatment,” Jacquie says, “it’s about providing comfort, relief, and understanding.
“People need a space to feel heard or understood, and that’s what we’re here for.”
Supporting all who walk through its doors, the Foundation welcomes people from all walks of life, including men. Foundation Ambassador Earl Nielsen, a bowel cancer survivor, has created a support network specifically for men who may feel more comfortable speaking to others who’ve faced similar battles.
“Cancer is often isolating, especially for men who may not be as open to the idea of reaching out for help,” says Earl.
“The Foundation lets us talk openly, share our stories, and know we’re not alone.”
Volunteers, including Jacquie herself, have been invaluable. They assist in every aspect of care, from wig fittings to scarf-tying lessons for those facing hair loss due to chemotherapy. These services provide not only practical support but also a measure of dignity and hope.
With each new development, the Foundation’s
vision grows, yet its purpose remains steady: to support, honor, and uplift the Mackay community in its fight against cancer.
“Every dollar we raise, every hand we hold, it’s all for Trudy’s dream—that no one in our community ever faces cancer alone.”
The Trudy Crowley Foundation thanks its partners; Murphy Equipment Sales Australia Pty Ltd, S.H. Tait & Co, and Daly Bay. This editorial was sponsored by Daly Bay for the Trudy Crowley Foundation.

RAISING THE BAR FOR FAMILY FUN
Mackay is buzzing with excitement as two dynamic business couples, Mark and Nicole Laffin and Ben and Rebecca Phillips, join forces to breathe new life into the historic Hotel Mackay. Located on the corner of Victoria and Wellington Streets, this iconic pub is set for a transformation that promises to make it one of Mackay’s best family hotels and entertainment venues, complete with delicious food and a vibrant atmosphere.
With roots in the pub industry, both couples understand the importance of family traditions. Nicole’s family once managed McGuires Hotel, where she was born, making her connection to hospitality deeply personal.
“It makes for an interesting talking point on my birth certificate,” Nicole shared.
“While people traditionally think of hotels as being watering holes and places to connect with mates, they are also places where families gather to share stories, laughter, and life’s milestones; and for some, they are their home.”
Ben Phillips, head of Gardian Finance and a director of Gardian Group, shares this enthusiasm for community connections. Raised in the Leichhardt Hotel, which his family managed for decades, Ben fondly recalls the bonds formed with patrons.
“The customers became like family,” he says.
Mark has spent a significant part of his career managing various pubs along the Queensland coast, where he gained invaluable expertise in hospitality operations. His culinary passion shines through as co-owner of Laffo’s Bar & Pizzeria, where they craft hearty, family-friendly meals that have become a local favourite.
The idea to purchase Hotel Mackay was a spontaneous conversation over breakfast at Laffo’s.
“I casually asked Mark if he’d be interested in buying a pub,” Ben recalls. “Before I knew it, he was already checking it out!” With both men sensing that the pub wasn’t operating at its full potential, they quickly negotiated a deal before the property even hit the market, officially taking ownership on August 12, 2024.
As renovations are well underway, excitement is building in the community. The vision for the new Hotel Mackay revolves around creating a warm and welcoming space for families to celebrate everything from 18th and 21st birthdays to engagement parties and hens’ nights.
“We want to be the place where locals come to create lasting memories,” Mark explains.
The revamped hotel will feature a dynamic beer garden with a stage for live performances, making it Mackay’s premier outdoor venue, capturing touring bands to attract some big acts to Mackay.
Inside, the renovation will blend heritage and modern comfort, showcasing an art deco vibe with open spaces, a family-friendly restaurant and upstairs accommodation. The restaurant will offer a range of hearty meals, from succulent steaks to delicious pasta dishes, ensuring that families can enjoy good food without breaking the bank.
“Our goal is to become the go-to spot for great steak in Mackay!” says Nicole.
In honour of Ben’s late brother Peter, the venue will also feature Puffa’s Sports Bar. A tribute to Peter’s competitive spirit and legacy in rugby league, the bar will be adorned with memories of Puffa, celebrating his contributions to the local sports scene.
“We want it to feel like a place where people can gather to enjoy sport on the big screen and reminisce,” Ben adds.
“This is about more than just a pub; it’s about building a place that embodies the spirit of our community,” Nicole added.
With a vision for the grand re-opening in mid-2025 and a shared vision for a family-friendly future, Mark, Nicole, Ben, and Rebecca are ready to bring a fresh take to this historic pub, proving that the heart of Mackay truly beats in its vibrant community.

Reflecting on a mosaic of memorable moments, she recounts a particularly special sale: “A lovely elderly family was living on a small regional acreage, and we sold their property in two parcels, nearly reaching $1M.” But her support didn’t stop there; she also helped them find their next home, a match that’s turned out beautifully for the family.
“Knowing I could assist them in this next chapter is something I’ll always cherish,” she says.
Set to open this November, her Marian office represents another milestone—a labour of love that has deepened her ties to the Pioneer Valley’s history. Located on 337 Anzac Avenue, the building holds memories of yesteryear. As she renovates while preserving the building’s historical charm, Robyn is gathering stories of the building’s past, hoping to honour its history for all who visit.
“The Valley has grown so much since we arrived in 2002, and I’m thrilled to be a part of that history,” she says, and invites anyone who may have historic photos or information about the treasured building to share their knowledge with her.
Robyn’s passion for the Pioneer Valley runs so deep that it not only fuels her own work but inspires others to see the Valley’s potential as a united collective. If you flip this magazine over to Tripping, you’ll find a feature dedicated to the beauty and heritage of the Pioneer Valley—a vision Robyn herself has championed, connecting a community where each
success story builds momentum for the next.
As the demands of her career mounted, Robyn realised she needed to expand her team to elevate the experience for her clients. Enter Shirlz Russell, an independent agent renowned for her exceptional work ethic and unwavering integrity. Alongside her, Mackell Caruana has stepped in as the new administrative and social media whiz, enabling both Robyn and Shirlz to focus on what truly matters: their clients and community initiatives.
“Having them on board means we can deliver a level of service that truly reflects our commitment,” she said.
For Robyn, 2024 has been a remarkable chapter—a blend of professional triumphs, community dedication, and personal treasures. And as she looks to the future, one thing is certain: the Pioneer Valley is all the richer for her presence.
In a year full of professional highlights, what has been a personal highlight in 2024?
“My mum is here from New Zealand. It’s been more than 15 years since she’s been to Australia and at 83 with very poor vision, that is no small feat. This is a very special time and I am cherishing every moment, she is even quite taken with Allbe my mini Duschy. robyna.areaspecialist.com.au

In the heart of Cannonvale, a small veterinary clinic has blossomed into a beloved cornerstone of the community over the past 30 years. Orchid Valley Vets was founded by dynamic duo, Kath and Mark Williams in 1994 and first launched with a desire to bring compassionate pet care to the Airlie Beach area. It has since helped thousands of beloved animals receive the local care they need and deserve. With Mark’s expertise as a qualified veterinarian and Kath’s experience as a veterinary nurse, the couple crafted a warm, welcoming haven for pets and their owners.
As the clinic celebrates its huge 30-year anniversary, this milestone stands not only as a testament to their dedication but also as a vibrant example of how businesses can grow together with their communities, all while nurturing a culture that prioritises both animal welfare and employee satisfaction.
Over the past 30 years, Orchid Valley Vets has cared for a huge variety of pets and species, from cats and dogs to guinea pigs, birds, snakes, and even a crocodile. A deep connection to the local community is at the heart of the practice, reflecting the values they share with their clients, priding themselves in their honesty in client relationships. Orchid Valley Vet customers know they can trust the team for expert advice and practical treatment options, ensuring each beloved pet is always in the best hands.
The clinic has experienced remarkable growth, expanding its team and services to deliver to the ongoing demands of population rise and now boasts an additional two veterinarians, Mark and Louise Gerrard. They are supported by Katie, the practice manager, and a dedicated team of four veterinary nurses: Hannah, Lola, Tyler, Victoria and Jodie. Together, they ensure that every pet receives the best possible care.
Orchid Valley Vets takes great pride in their vibrant culture and strives to ensure all their staff align with this friendly, positive attitude. Veterinary Nurse Jodie emphasised how Orchid Valley Vets is one of the best practices she has ever worked for:
“I have worked at multiple vets before, and this vet has one of the best cultures.”
While Orchid Valley Vets give back to the Airlie community regularly by caring for their pets, they also go above and beyond helping rescue organisations like Fauna Rescue, who care for injured birds and Eco Barge Clean Seas who looks after injured marine turtles.
What sets Orchid Valley Vets apart from other veterinary practices is not only their unique culture but also their comprehensive range of services. They offer after-hours clinics in collaboration with Proserpine Vets, with whom they have a strong partnership. Other services include grooming, hydro baths, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Additionally, the
practice is excited about the possibility of opening a puppy school soon, to help train all the Whitsunday pups.
All the employees at the veterinary clinic love working with animals, and deeply care about their safety, with Jodie stating that, “there is nothing more satisfying than seeing an animal go home happy and healthy.”
The clinic always ensures they build a great relationship with their clients, and pride themselves in their honest approach towards animal care.
Kath and Mark love having their business in the Whitsundays stating that the beautiful community and stunning location make this the perfect home for them.
Despite their busy schedules, Kath and Mark always make time to follow their passion for animals beyond the veterinary clinic. From exploring nature to recently attending the Bowen Races, whenever they can be close to animals, they are content.
If you are looking for a new vet or are a vet looking for a new job, head over to the Orchid Valley Vets where they will welcome you with open arms.

At Elegance Beauty And Lymphatic Care
There’s truly no one like Candy, the four-legged assistant who’s ready to greet you with a wagging tail at Elegance Lymphatic Care.
As you slide open the clinic doors, you’re welcomed into a warm, inviting space and by none other than a friendly, well-mannered kelpie-cross staffy named Candy.
Her story is as charming as her name. It all began when a client on her way to an appointment at Elegance Lymphatic Care, stumbled upon a lonely puppy with a can stuck on her head. The clinic’s owner, Laura Hamilton, offered to look after her until a home could be found … and she never left.
Laura said that from that quirky encounter came her fitting name: Can-dy.
“Fast forward thirteen years, and Candy is now a beloved family and community member,” Laura said.
“Our daughter especially adores her, and the bond between them is truly unbreakable.”
Despite her advanced age, heart failure, the challenges of a small liver and lymphoedema pooling in her stomach, Candy has thrived under Laura’s care over the years.
That’s because Laura has been quietly revolutionising lymphatic care, blending advanced technology with traditional massage techniques to offer hope to those battling lymphoedema, lipedema, and post-surgical swelling.
Her clinic in Marian has become a retreat for those seeking relief, from athletes to patients recovering from major surgeries. And, in a serendipitous twist of fate, it wasn’t just her human clients who found relief—her beloved pup, Candy, also benefited.
With her professional expertise, Laura has been treating Candy’s lymphoedema by using a specialised laser tool to improve circulation, along with a lymphatic taping technique known as jellyfish taping for extra support.
The results have been remarkable, with Laura saying that even the vet has noticed the vast improvements in Candy’s health.
Whether you’re visiting the clinic for a lymphatic press, manual lymphatic drainage, decongestion therapy, low level cold laser or Hivamat treatment, you’re in the capable hands of Laura - with Candy by your side for extra comfort.
Candy is a hit with clients at Elegance Lymphatic
Care, especially those with NDIS. Many find comfort in petting her soft, luscious coat during their treatments, and Laura shares that Candy’s good behaviour and charm have made her a favourite. Clients eagerly look forward to seeing her on their next visit often asking where she is if she is not waiting for them.
Around the town of Marian, Candy is much like a local celebrity. Everyone knows her by name, and she’s even a regular at the school, where she joins Laura’s daughter for walks and makes appearances during show-and-tell. Her fan base grows daily.
For all her hard work, Candy lives a pampered life. Whether it’s playing dress-up, getting groomed, or lounging in her oversized pink princess bed, Candy is living in luxury, always ready to charm the next round of clients.
With Candy by your side, feel your worries fade away as you embrace the relaxing atmosphere of the clinic. Coupled with Laura’s compassionate care, qualified guidance and professional touch, this dynamic duo guarantees an experience that’s as comforting as it is transformative.

MEET MITSUBISHI MO
And Harry Russell From WhitCool Air Conditioning
With a flick of a switch the heavy humid days and the hot sticky nights disappear as the clean cooling air of a Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioning unit washes over you. Clearing the senses and relaxing the body, you can finally escape the heat for much-needed replenishment. This relief is felt not only by humans but also by our playful pooches like Mitsubishi Mo, who works alongside his owner Harry Russell at WhitCool Airconditioning. Mo loves sitting underneath his Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioning unit and letting the icy air cool his thick fluffy coat.
WhitCool is a family-owned business that opened its doors in January 2022 and is owned by Harry Russell and his cousin Mitch Russell.
At WhitCool, they supply and instal Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioning units, and Harry said the high-quality product and good workmanship is something they pride themselves in.
By working with builders and clients WhitCool instal airconditioning units into new homes, ensuring that air-con is available to the homeowner from the second they walk into their new home. WhitCool also instal air-conditioning units in commercial premises and domestic properties. They also offer repairs and servicing.
“We’re big believers in if it’s broken don’t throw it away, we can fix it. We can replace a part and hopefully try to get another couple of years out of an air-con, rather than trying to replace it,” said Harry.
“We can go to any house with any brand of Air Con and try to repair it, whether it’s gas leaks, PCBs or electronics. We always try to push and get a repair done first before trying to find a replacement.”
What sets WhitCool apart from other air-conditioning businesses in the region is its dynamic young team. Harry himself is 28 and he says the whole crew are fairly young but full of technical knowledge and experience which far surpasses their years.
The youngest member of the team is Miniature Schnauzer Mo who is just over one year old.
Although Mo is very new to the business, Harry has noticed Mo making a big impact on promotions.
“Whenever I put a photo of him up or he goes on one of my social media stories, I get a lot of hits,” laughed Harry.
Mo loves attention and he thoroughly enjoys it when Harry brings him into work, he has a great time playing fetch with customers or receiving pats.
“He just brings a lot of energy to the job site and puts a lot of smiles on customers’ faces too!” Harry explained.
“A lot of customers request me to bring him!”
If you would like to meet Mo in person, give Harry a ring at WhitCool and ask him to bring his friendly pooch along to the job. For a fair price, great service and knowledgeable crew, WhitCool have all your air-conditioning needs covered.

A POOCH’S PARADISE
Located in one of Bowen’s most picturesque bays, Horseshoe Bay Cafe is a vibrant beachside café where dogs are welcome to join their owners and enjoy their time in the spacious outdoor dining area. This furry-family-member welcome was initiated by the cafe’s animal-loving owner, Jilly Paddon. The inspiration for welcoming pooches of all shapes and sizes came from a desire to make sure the whole family is included, even the furriest members of the clan.
Popular with locals and a delightful discovery for tourists, Horseshoe Bay Cafe’s pet-friendly atmosphere allows patrons to enjoy a breakfast, coffee and cake, meal or drink alongside their precious pets while marveling at the expansive views of this stunning bay.
Jilly Paddon owns Horseshoe Bay Café with her husband David and she shares her enthusiasm for having pets around the café, thanks to its lovely outdoor space.
“Finding pet-friendly businesses can be quite challenging these days. Embracing a pet-friendly policy not only attracts dog owners but also expands our customer base, creating a welcoming environment
for all pet lovers.”
Jilly’s passion for animals shines through her affection for her two beloved pups, Eddie, a dachshund, and Charlie, her rescue dog. Both dogs frequently accompany her on outdoor café visits and are loyal companions at home.
Eddie and Charlie have become cherished members of the cafe community. Given the cafe’s proximity to the local caravan park, Jilly emphasises the importance of catering to pet owners. Many visitors prefer to bring their furry friends along while camping and are often hesitant to leave them behind. This commitment to inclusivity not only enhances the cafe atmosphere but also strengthens the bond between the community and its pets.
In addition to being pet-friendly, Horseshoe Bay Cafe is renowned for its delicious, fresh cuisine crafted by the cafe’s skilled chef, including their ever-popular ‘Parmy, Pasta and Pizza Nights,’ which run on Tuesdays from 5-9:30pm with adults dining for just $20 and kids for $10.
The cafe also hosts live music nights, every weekend
and Sunday afternoon, making it a vibrant gathering spot for the community, where you can relax and soak in the views on the beach in the tropical surroundings with a cocktail in hand.
Horseshoe Bay’s stunning location and atmosphere has even encouraged visits from special guests in the past, including the likes of INXS’ frontman Jon Stevens.
Jilly and David operated a cafe in Airlie Beach for 8 years before relocating to Bowen, where they successfully run Horseshoe Bay Cafe for the past 5 years. Jilly expressed her love for Bowen, highlighting its stunning beauty and laid-back atmosphere, she also emphasized the amazing friendships she’s formed there.

FROM PROJECT MANAGEMENT TO PAWSITIVE VIBES
MEET ISCOPE’S FURRY TEAM MEMBERS BRINGING JOY TO THE WORKPLACE
Founded in 2017, iScope has built a solid reputation for excellence in scoping, project management, structural repair, and welding qualification and training. While iScope’s dedicated team is key to their success, two special members truly make a fluffy impact: Pip and Alfie. These charming Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bull Arab mixes have a remarkable gift for easing nerves, spreading smiles, and fostering a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Pip and Alfie are the perfect pair. Alfie is protective, loyal, and a bit bossy, while Pip is gentle, loving, and unassuming. They were brought into the caring arms of the iScope team—Alfie was bred and purchased locally, while Pip was rescued from the Mackay RSPCA Facebook page. Resembling Alfie’s twin, iScope owners Rachel and Craig Evans couldn’t resist her.
While iScope has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere already, the pups play a big role in greeting candidates undergoing weld testing. In an environment where individuals may feel nervous and anxious, the dogs help make people more relaxed, often promoting conversations about their own animals.
Due to the duo’s impact on customers, Rachel Evans said that returning clients are always excited to greet the dogs,
“If the dogs aren’t there, they’re always asking where they are! The dogs enjoy all the pats they get and promote a more personal conversation between customers and staff,” Rachel said.
iScope’s workshop mascot, Alfie the dog, has even starred in a previous marketing campaign, featuring a fantastic photo of him on a forklift. This lovable pooch has an unusual obsession with lettuce—he’d devour an entire head if given the chance! When he’s not snacking, you can find him lounging at Rachel’s feet, content to stay close.
Pip, on the other hand, loves her bed, which is in the office; she hardly moves from it all day.
If you are looking for your next scoping, project management, structural repair, or welding qualification and training, head to iScope and be welcomed by Alfie and Pip. www.iscope.au
In a world where hearts and paws unite, Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) creates life-changing connections between rescue animals and people in the Mackay community. The program brings together individuals facing social isolation and shelter animals in need of companionship, fostering a bond that heals both sides.
Through unique sessions, participants build confidence, find purpose, form lasting friendships and enhance their wellbeing, while the animals receive the love, training and socialisation they need throughout their time in care. It’s a symbiotic relationship where outcomes for the hearts result in hope and connection, and outcomes for the paws lead to happier, more adoptable animals.
For Susan Armstrong, HPHH Senior Program Trainer, helping others comes naturally, whether they have two legs or four.
“I get to work with animals every day, but also witness firsthand how they impact the lives of our participants.”
HPHH is a national not-for-profit organisation that addresses social isolation, not just for people but for animals as well. Their unique programs, based at rescue shelters like RSPCA Animal Care Centre, Mackay, focus on helping both vulnerable individuals and animals form meaningful connections. The animals get much-needed care and training, while participants— who range from people with a disability or mental health challenge, veterans and youth at risk—gain confidence, social skills, independence and a sense of purpose.
Susan loves seeing how participants transform over time, watching on as shy individuals gradually open up.
“It’s amazing to see participants realise their potential through working with the animals.”
“When someone masters a new skill, like training a dog, you can see that spark of accomplishment. They realise, ‘Yes, I can do this!’
“That sense of achievement is powerful—it’s about more than just learning to train animals; it’s about building self-worth and confidence,” she said.
The program runs small, group sessions that are mutually beneficial for the people and the animals.
“The interaction helps them build friendships and a sense of community, and it’s heart-warming to see both animals and people thrive in such a safe, supportive space,” Susan said.
Happy Paws Happy Hearts Mackay programs have become a lifeline for many. Participants gain more than just companionship from the animals they work with—they acquire skills that improve their mental health and overall wellbeing along with vocational skills for transitions into employment or study. Each session offers a chance for growth, for both the people involved and the animals in care.
The impact of HPHH is clear: happier, more socialised animals ready for adoption and more confident, empowered people ready to find their unique purpose and take on new journeys. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
Mackay sessions run Monday through Friday with morning and afternoon programs available. If you are interested or know of someone who would benefit from an HPHH program, visit the website to find out more at www.hphhfoundation.org.

THE KING OF SMILES
SUNNY BOO PARKER, PARKER LAW QLD
Amid the files and legal briefs at Parker Law QLD (PLQ), an unexpected source of joy and comfort walks on four paws. With his golden coat and ever-cheerful demeanour, Sunny Boo Parker has taken on the role of morale booster in the office.
Known affectionately as the “King of Smiles”, Sunny regularly visits the PLQ office, where he greets each team member with a wag of his tail, a friendly lick, and a nudge for pats. He’s more than just a mascot; he’s part of the team, bringing a sense of joy and connection that’s hard to match.
“We believe that having a furry companion like Sunny in the workplace has been key to fostering the wellbeing of our team,” said the company’s director, Kelly Parker.
A bit of a local celebrity, Sunny has appeared in many of PLQ’s social media campaigns, but this marks his first feature in print—a milestone he’s sure to be wagging his tail about!
“Since we started in 2016, Sunny has grown right alongside us,” Kelly said.
“He’s gone from lounging on case files in our small home office to overseeing our ever-growing team.”
PLQ specialises in conveyancing, business and commercial transactions, as well as farming and property, alongside wills and estates. This creates a bustling atmosphere, but the presence of the “king of smiles” helps to ease the tension.
Sunny also approves of PLQ’s newest initiative—gift vouchers for wills. A thoughtful present for a milestone birthday or when your child welcomes a little one of their own, these vouchers offer the ultimate peace of mind.
“We have over 20 years’ experience in Wills and Estates, conveyancing, property, commercial and business Law and we’re here to provide trusted representation every step of the way. We have PROVEN results, provide RELIABLE advice and have been TRUSTED by our clients to provide correct and practical advice” Kelly added.
Next time you visit Parker Law, prepare to be greeted by the King of Smiles himself, who’s always ready to brighten your day.

THIS CHRISTMAS,
GIVE THE GIFT OF HOPE TO NEGLECTED PETS
As the season to be jolly approaches, it’s important to remember the four-legged friends who are often neglected by their families and forced to spend majority of their days in the confined walls of a boarding pen.
Whilst this reality is heartbreaking, it is one that is very real, and true.
Thankfully organisations such as Mackay Pet Rescue Incorporated (MPRI) open up their hearts and their homes to accommodate local animals in need, with a range of trained foster carers and volunteers who dedicate their time to make a pawprint sized difference in the lives of those most vulnerable.
Mackay Pet Rescue Inc. is powered by the efforts of over 45 dedicated volunteers and foster carers, including President Zanika Breed, Vice President Ros Lowry, Secretary Janet Ambrose, and Treasurer Renae Gordon. Among these heroes are Robyn Van Rooyan and Leisa Barnett, who also played a crucial role in the establishment of MPRI.
From dogs to cats, silkies to ducks, and even the occasional ‘bin chicken’ or baby crocodile (yes you read that right), the MPRI team is constantly called upon by locals, swiftly attending the scene to save a helpless animal in despair.
They are the silent heroes within the region,
known for their fast approach and caring nature, offering a service that is often overlooked and underappreciated.
Janet Ambrose, Secretary of MPRI, shed light on the immense dedication involved in the frontline work of rescuing animals, especially the heartbreaking discovery of very sick animals. Many of these rescues require long-term care to nurse them back to health.
“There’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into this,” Janet said. “We’re all unpaid volunteers juggling regular jobs, families and other responsibilities. We foster in our own homes and rely heavily on community support.
“The high cost of living and rental crisis is really impacting us. People are dumping animals or leaving them behind when they move, and animals are coming into care in pitiful conditions, often withered and close to death.”
With the closure of nearby rescues due to a lack of support, MPRI’s catchment area has expanded significantly, now covering regions from the Pioneer Valley to Bowen, Moranbah, and Emerald.
To continue their life-saving work, MPRI relies heavily on community donations and government grants - and they’re in need of your support. By building awareness of the real challenges in pet
rescue, they hope to inspire businesses, especially those in the mining sector, to sponsor their mission.
“We are constantly rescuing mother cats and kittens from mining camps,” said Janet, “Our carers go out at night with torches, traps, trail cameras and food to catch them… but we are in need of more funding and sponsorship.”
Janet also highlighted the importance of the cat desexing program funded by a $32,000 Gambling Community Benefit Fund. This program will desex 100 cats, preventing an estimated 2,400 kittens from being born next year and reducing the number of animals in need of rescue.
“We’re always looking for foster carers and volunteers in any capacity,” Janet added. “We provide all the supplies and training - people just need to bring their love and willingness to help.”
In future, the rescue team aims to fund a sanctuary for elderly or homeless cats and dogs, specifically helping those whose owners have passed away, those without homes, or when all foster carers reach full capacity.
This holiday season, consider supporting the tireless efforts of Mackay Pet Rescue Incorporated and help make a real difference for those without a voice.

CELEBRATING FAMILY-RUN OCEAN RAFTING EXCELLENCE!
Almost three decades have passed since Ocean Rafting brought a splash of gold to the turquoise Whitsundays waters. Ocean Rafting has surpassed 28 wonderful years of family-run and locally loved business, and is ready to keep serving the Whitsunday Tourism Industry for another.
Ocean Rafting marked its 28th anniversary in style at the Tourism Awards in October, securing a gold medal in the ‘Major Tour & Transport’ category and silver in ‘Adventure Tourism.’ The team was also honoured as Whitsunday’s favourite tourism experience in the consumer-voted ‘People’s Choice Award Experience.’ These impressive wins led to their induction into the Hall of Fame, recognising three consecutive years of gold in the “Major Tour & Transport” category and three years as the “People’s Choice Award Experience.”
Ocean Rafting is proudly owned by Peter and Jan Claxton, who took over the business in 2001 when it featured just two vessels, “Jammin’” and “Wild Thing.” After some renovations, both boats are still part of the fleet today. Under Peter and Jan’s leadership, Ocean Rafting has blossomed into a thriving enterprise.
What sets Ocean Rafting apart is its rich family heritage, with three generations actively involved in the business. Nathan Fleming, who has spent 13 years at Ocean Rafting, also shares a deep-rooted connection with the family behind it. His journey began in Hervey Bay, where he first met Jan and Peter—Jan approached him at his job, promoting the business alongside her two children, who now serve as operations managers. Nathan describes Jan and Peter as family, fully embracing their familyoriented approach. The close-knit atmosphere is further strengthened by Jan’s mother, who serves as the head accountant, and her sister, also an accountant, reinforcing the strong familial bonds that define Ocean Rafting.
“At Ocean Rafting, we are lucky to have become a three-generational business over the last twentyeight years,” said Jan.
“Being family-owned and operated allows us to be agile and efficient when making on-the-go decisions. This translates to our team feeling empowered and responsible for their choices, ideas, and actions. Some of the Rafting team have been with us for a long time, and now their youngsters have joined us, completing the Rafting family recipe.”
Since the business was acquired in 2001, it has expanded from two boats to eight, along with adding planes for scenic flights over the Whitsundays. These breathtaking flights, showcasing the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday’s iconic Heart Reef, were introduced by Ocean Rafting seven years ago.
The concept of combining planes with ocean rafting was inspired by Peter, who transitioned from aviation to boating. This innovative approach has led to the creation of the Fly Raft package, which has quickly become one of Ocean Rafting’s best-sellers. This unique offering seamlessly integrates the thrill of flight with the adventure of rafting, providing an unforgettable experience for their customers.
Three generations of family and almost three decades as one of the Whitsundays’ most loved on-water experiences, Ocean Rafting state that their mission is still to treat every day as if it was the one and only day their guests will experience Ocean Rafting and the Whitsundays; and this has attributed to the company’s long-term success and thriving growth over the years.

For nearly a century, Mater Private Hospital Mackay has been by the side of Mackay and Whitsunday residents, supporting them through every stage of life, from the first breath to the final steps.
This commitment to compassionate, high-quality healthcare is exemplified by dedicated clinicians like midwife Sarah Fordyce, whose leadership in Mater Mackay’s maternity unit has brought invaluable support to local families, and the late Ailsa Millewski, a beloved palliative nurse whose gentle, caring presence touched countless lives.
They represent the heart of Mater's mission to provide compassionate, world-class care at every turn of life's journey.
Mater Mothers' Private Mackay midwife Sarah Fordyce has journeyed from aspiring accountant to devoted midwife and Nurse Unit Manager, embodying the values of care, compassion, and leadership that define Mater. Recently recognised with the Mater Early Career Excellence Award, Sarah’s path is marked by resilience and dedication, proving that a passion for people can forge unexpected careers.
After a chance conversation with a midwife in high school, Sarah felt a powerful calling to healthcare, even as she initially pursued a degree and Master's in accounting.
“I decided that midwifery was my calling,” Sarah said.
MATER’S LEGACY OF COMPASSIONATE
“After completing one year as a Registered Midwife (RM), although I loved the profession, I still had the feeling that I should have completed my accounting.”
Sarah worked as a RM while completing a Master of Professional Accounting and said although her career trajectory had not been straightforward, she found a profession where both her passion for midwifery and management aligned.
“My accounting experience was in risk management and is utilised on a daily basis in my role as Nurse Unit Manager,” she said.
At Mater Mothers' Private Mackay, Sarah leads a team providing exceptional care, aided by Mater’s status as Queensland’s referral centre for babies with heart conditions. With facilities like the 24/7 Pregnancy Assessment Centre, serving expectant mothers from six weeks onward, and the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) – which treats over 2,000 babies annually – Mater stands as a leader in maternal and fetal medicine.
Through Teladoc, Sarah and her team can connect with the NCCU’s expert neonatology team in SouthEast Queensland, delivering cutting-edge care to some of the region’s most vulnerable patients.
“Being a part of a large healthcare organisation means that we have access to world-class specialists and nursing staff, and innovative
research and education,” Sarah says.
While Sarah and her team watch closely over those precious first breaths, there is another team dedicated to ensuring that a person’s last steps are embraced with compassion, care and comfort.
Nurses like Miechelle Williams and the late Ailsa Millewski embody this commitment, bringing warmth and empathy to every patient and family they support—a legacy of care that resonates deeply within the unit.
It has been a year since nurse Ailsa Millewski passed away peacefully in the Mater palliative care unit where she once worked, but the legacy of her care has not faded.
Ailsa joined Mater Private Hospital Mackay in 2010, working in the maternity team and coordinating the hospital’s Health Hearing Program. She made a positive impact on her patients and colleagues from the very beginning.
“People said that when Ailsa smiled, it wasn’t just a smile. She smiled with her whole face,” her husband Gary Millewski recalled.
“She loved working with the babies and young children.”
Ailsa worked across many areas of the hospital, but felt a special draw to the Palliative Care Unit on St Catherine’s ward. The unit has grown over the past 30 years to provide holistic support to
Sarah Fordyce with baby Tristan Jones
OF COMPASSIONATE CARE
patients experiencing lifelimiting illness. Ailsa soon became close friends with fellow Palliative Care Nurse, Miechelle Williams, who said she had ‘fallen into’ this demanding and specialised field of nursing.
“I was still relatively new to Mackay when I met Ailsa. From the get go, I just thought, ‘This is an extremely lovely person.’ You knew if she was on shift with you, it wouldn’t feel like work.”
Miechelle and Ailsa grew closer when Ailsa was part of the nursing team who cared for Miechelle’s husband Warren when he was in Palliative Care Unit.
Warren passed in 2018.
“It was only two and a half years from the time of my husband’s diagnosis to his passing,” Miechelle said.
“In that time, everything about my kids’ lives was disrupted – but once he was in Palliative Care here at Mater, Ailsa just brought that extra little bit of compassion.”
Last year roles were reversed when Ailsa was admitted as a patient in Mater’s Palliative Care Unit.
“Ailsa had fond memories working with Miechelle right up until she took ill – she first showed symptoms that something was wrong in 2021,” Gary said.
“She was always an amazing cook so the first I noticed something was wrong was one night when
she was cooking a chicken stir-fry and she came out to me and said ‘Gary, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.’
“It took until the end of the year to work out that Ailsa had developed a tumour in her adrenal glands which we had removed in Townsville – but a biopsy and PET scan revealed it was already a stage 3 carcinoma and had spread to her spine.
“She opted not to have chemo and wanted to pass away at home.
“I cared for her at home, bought all the equipment, but didn’t want to be the one to tell her that it was getting too much for me.
“She could see though. I just couldn’t do that last bit – our GP had been doing home visits and we went into him one day. He visited her and she said to him, ‘I think I’ll have to go across the road to the Mater.’
“He said, ‘I guess you’ll want the penthouse,’ and she said, ‘Yes, room 116.’
“The first time I laid eyes on Ailsa was 12 September 1984.
“On 12 September 2023, she was admitted to Palliative Care.”
Miechelle cared for Ailsa throughout her admission.
“Caring for Ailsa at the end was difficult because this was a colleague I had worked with, but it was also such a beautiful experience to be able to
support her and her family like she had done for me and my family previously,” Miechelle said.
“The night of her passing, Gary and their daughter were both there and it all just felt like it happened at the right time for everyone.”
“Miechelle didn’t have to say anything in those final moments, just her presence there with us was fantastic,” Gary said.
“Ailsa’s wish was that she didn’t want anyone else to be with her when she passed, only me – and it turned out that, at five to two in the morning, our daughters were dozing off to sleep, I was holding Ailsa’s hand, and I just said, ‘I think she’s taken her last breath.’
“She had - and it was just the two of us.”
Gary shared Miechelle’s appreciation for the staff, saying Ailsa was provided with the same care she had given to countless other patients over the years.
“The feeling whenever you are at the Mater is always different to other places. It is so personal and you never feel like a number; you know every person is there for you and nowhere more so than with the palliative care team,” he said.
“Ailsa had always said ‘Gaz, don’t be sad because dying is just as much a part of life as living.’
She said it’s such a privilege to see a baby born, but also a privilege to be able to support a patient at the other end of their care too.”

IBUILDING DREAMS AND MEMORIES, ONE
PLAYTIME AT A TIME
Cheeky Little Monkeys, Harper Bee and Party Central
n a family business that’s equal parts legacy and love, Lisa Versaci and her three daughters— Isabella, Alexis, and Stella—are the spirited forces behind Cheeky Little Monkeys, the vibrant play centre that’s taken Mackay by storm.
Recently winning the Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce Best in Business Award for the Next Big Thing (New Business), Cheeky Little Monkeys has become more than a popular play spot for kids; it’s a family’s tribute to a loved one, a shared passion, and a way to stay close to Lisa’s late husband, whose creativity and hard work laid the foundation of the family’s ventures.
Years ago, Lisa’s husband helped build the original Cheeky Little Monkeys on the Sunshine Coast, designing and crafting equipment for children to safely play and explore. Tragically, he passed away in a truck
heartbreak that shifted the family’s world. The grief was immense, but for Lisa and her daughters, Cheeky Little Monkeys became more than just a play centre.
“The girls felt it was essential to repurchase CLM and bring it to Mackay.
“It’s our way of keeping his legacy alive,” Lisa shared.
For them, each laugh, tumble, and game in the centre holds memories, bringing a sense of closeness to their dad, a man who remains a vital part of their everyday lives.
Today, each of Lisa’s daughters contributes to the business, infusing it with unique talents and a shared love for family.
Isabella, at 15, shines as a supervisor at Cheeky Little Monkeys, stepping up in ways that make her mum proud. Alongside her childcare responsibilities, Isabella manages rosters and coordinates birthday parties, demonstrating a maturity beyond her years.
“She makes the children feel safe and loved,” Lisa said, “and watching her create a nurturing environment brings so much warmth to our space.”
Isabella also designs products for their Harper Bee boutique, a line of chic, teen-focused items that promises to expand in the coming months.
Alexis, 14, has also found her stride in the family business. She works as a supervisor at Cheeky Little Monkeys, where she shares her sister’s skill for making kids feel welcome. But Alexis’s creative spark shines brightest at Harper Bee, where she oversees social media, represents the brand as an ambassador, and even collaborates on product design.
“She’s passionate about crafting items that appeal to her age group,” Lisa noted, “and her confidence
in front of the camera is incredible. It’s something that draws kids to her online and in-store.”
Her posts and influencer role bring in a loyal following, helping Harper Bee grow into a vibrant, trendy space for teens and tweens.
Stella, at just 11, is the youngest member of the family team, but her contributions are no less impactful. Spending time in the play centre on weekends and school holidays, she’s a comforting, playful presence for the little ones and a quick learner at the retail counter.
Stella is also exploring social media, eager to learn the ropes and connect with other kids her age through the Harper Bee brand.
Beyond Cheeky Little Monkeys, the businesses which bring joy to parents and children alike includes Party Central, a venue perfect for memorable birthday celebrations, and Harper Bee, a boutique shop featuring trendy school supplies, party items, and gifts for teens. The multi-faceted business model has made their location on Wood Street a one-stop shop for Mackay families, with each venture adding something special to the community.
Cheeky Little Monkeys itself is a paradise for children aged six months to five years, with a safe, clean environment designed for joyful play, and a crèche service that allows parents to drop their kids off while they run errands or enjoy a few hours to themselves.
The concept, Lisa explained, grew out of her own experience as a busy mother seeking fun, stressfree options for her children.
“I wanted to create a place where little ones could go bananas in a safe, age-appropriate environment. Somewhere parents could relax, sip a coffee, and let
the kids swing into fun,” she said.
Today, families can drop off their children for up to three hours for just $20 an hour, or stay and enjoy a coffee from Primal Coffee with a snack from YAW Bakery. “Date Night Saturdays” even gives parents the option for a night out, with the peace of mind that their little ones are in good hands.
With their recent business award from the Chamber of Commerce, Cheeky Little Monkeys and its sister ventures are thriving and growing. Soon, Harper Bee will move to a new, location in Mt Pleasant, and Cheeky Little Monkeys itself will undergo a major expansion, including added equipment to accommodate more children and families.
“Harper Bee has become more than just a store; it’s a space where tweens and teens can truly feel at home,” Lisa explained.
“When we learned it was for sale, my daughters begged me to buy it, and now it’s part of our family’s legacy to continue what the original owner, Janine, began.”
The shop is filled with carefully curated gifts, self-care items, and unique products designed just for tweens and teens.
“We pride ourselves on selecting only the best, ensuring every item speaks to their sense of style and individuality, both in-store and online,” Lisa added.
It’s a promising future for a family whose love and resilience have seen them through the hardest times, and who continue to find strength and purpose in one another.
For Lisa, the most rewarding part of the business is watching her daughters blossom within it.
“They bring such creative ideas, and seeing their confidence grow has been a joy,” she shared. In each of their roles, whether comforting a crying child or strategising product lines for Harper Bee, her daughters have stepped up, embodying the strength and compassion that their parents instilled in them.
In their laughter, hard work, and shared memories, Lisa and her daughters carry forward a legacy of love and resilience, making their businesses a cherished part of Mackay’s community.

FAMILY, FURNITURE
WITH JEN, CLIVE & ISSY BURNUP FROM BURNUPS FURNITURE COURT
Furniture carries countless memories, from family dinners around the table to cosy movie nights on the sofa. Similarly, Burnups Furniture Court is steeped in its own rich history, that dates back to 1950.
First opening as a ‘hole in the wall’ shop on Bowen’s George Street, the business developed into a larger showroom on 42 Powell Street where the late John Burnup, his wife Lillian and the rest of the Burnup family resided above the shop. Starting with four pillows for stock and purchasing furniture on consignment from Townsville, Burnups was established on a small budget which was infused with passion for design and quality right from the start.
Clive Burnup joined the family business in 1970 at just 21 years of age. Prior to this, he had a brief stint at the Commonwealth Bank and was well-known for performing on-stage as a member of various rock and roll bands.
Clive and Jenni Burnup have recently welcomed their daughter Issy into the business and are thrilled to continue the family-run legacy of this much-loved local furniture store. The family are proud of the business’ growth; they built the existing Cannonvale shop in the middle of a cane paddock which later turned out to be the Whitsunday Shopping Plaza.
“Family businesses bring soul to their operations,” Clive explained.
“When the family sit down for dinner, conversations to do with business continue, it’s not like bigger companies which are run by a faraway board of directors and managers, it’s a lot more localized and personal.”
Issy also highlighted that running a family business often involves a wider variety of tasks and responsibilities: “From admin to design to unloading a truck, you’ve got to have a pretty diverse skill set.”
At Burnups everything, including management, is based in the Whitsundays. This is a huge advantage as there is no one-size-fits-all for furniture, and you can be sure to get top quality advice that understands our unique environment. From the climate to the mix of country and coastal styling, Burnups offer furniture solutions that are in-tune with the region.
“In terms of practicality, it is knowing that certain things are just not suitable to the heat of the tropics or lifestyle here,” Issy added.
Your furniture is in excellent hands with Issy, Clive, Jen and their team. They personally source pieces from exotic locations in South East Asia and Italy, while also frequently visiting Sydney and Brisbane for Australian made products.
“We understand the need to carry stock so there are no long wait times for orders. Unlike companies that display furniture you won’t receive for 14 weeks; we ensure most products are available
immediately” Clive added.
By sourcing products directly, Burnups ensures topquality standards. They personally inspect factories domestically and internationally, both for their own two stores and for the Furniture Court Buying Group of which Clive is a long serving Board Director. The aim is to get the right style, comfort, and price. As a family business, they genuinely care about helping you get the best value for your money.
“One key difference in a family business is our genuine commitment to providing high-quality products. We invest considerable time in sourcing to ensure that our stock meets our standards” Issy emphasised.
Although Burnups primarily focuses on ready-topurchase items, if there’s something specific, you’re looking for, they can certainly source it for you.
“Including the Beds R Us shop, we have 2,000 square meters of retail floor space in Cannonvale and a further 1,000 square metres in Bowen showcasing a diverse range of options,” Clive stated.
“That’s another massive transition for us, we have gone from one box of pillows to having five large warehouses” Issy added.
“There’s a couple of lifetimes worth going in to build all that,” Clive continued.
The Burnup family continues to develop the business, with a full renovation of the Beds R Us shop completed in the last 18 months. They have also opened a Lazboy Gallery at the end of last year, making it the only Lazboy Gallery between Rockhampton and Townsville. During this time, they also opened an exclusive Zoletti Gallery. The Bowen Store also does Floorcoverings, along with Shutters and Blinds.
Over the past 20 years, Burnups has successfully expanded its commercial Burnups Design Division, a commercial interior decorator service, which operates in conjunction with Burnups Furniture Court. Many projects have been successfully designed and completed on Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach and Bowen. Burnups Design Division has been further developed by Issy who brought her interior design expertise and university qualifications.
The operation is a family affair, “All of the Burnup Family have worked in the business at some stage,” said Clive.
The team also sponsor various events within the community including, The Bowen Cup, Paul Bowman Football Carnival and Dingo Beach festival, and always aim to support other local community businesses. Burnups strive to provide the community furniture with exceptional design, quality and functionality.

DRIVEN BY DETAIL, POWERED BY FAMILY
AT EVOLUTION ENGINEERING
Evolution Engineering is a powerhouse in the Mackay engineering sector, merging high-tech waterjet profiling with a strong, family-centred philosophy.
This family-run business began almost twenty years ago in a small shed, powered by Managing Director John Refalo and his son Justin. Together with Justin’s wife, Melissa, and Director Joe Grech, they’ve nurtured Evolution Engineering into a premier workshop for quality engineering solutions, with an impressive line-up of state-of-theart equipment, including three advanced waterjet profiling machines.
Today, Evolution Engineering not only champions precision and quality but also embodies a community-driven character that reflects their dedication to supporting local industries and families alike.
The path to success began when John brought his extensive experience from Hay Point, joined by Justin’s enthusiasm as the company’s very first official employee. Their small operation initially handled basic fabrication tasks, but their curiosity led them to explore the innovative possibilities of waterjet cutting. What began with a single machine grew into one of the most comprehensive waterjet profiling workshops in Australia, boasting capabilities that set Evolution Engineering apart in both skill and service.
“Our waterjet machines are a game-changer,” says Managing Director John.
“We can cut virtually all types of speciality metals
including QT plate, wear plate, all alloys, brass and bronze, as well as other materials such as wood, plastic, rubber and even some softer stones”
Waterjet profiling’s cold-cutting technique allows the team to eliminate heat-affected zones in the material which doesn’t compromise the structural integrity of the material properise. This makes waterjet profiling ideal for sensitive, high-spec components, from complex shapes to fine details.
“With waterjets, we get precision without compromising the integrity of the material,” director Joe explains. Whether it’s a delicate bevelled edge on metal alloy or a sharp corner on porcelain, Evolution Engineering delivers clean, intricate cuts that are both quick and exact.
As Evolution Engineering expanded, so did its capabilities. With each new waterjet, they welcomed more complex projects, evolving into a one-stop shop where clients’ visions come to life under one roof.
“Having everything done in-house allows us to control quality and meet tight deadlines,” Melissa said. Her role as Corporate Services Manager ties every operation together, ensuring projects progress smoothly from start to finish.
The company’s dedication to quality isn’t just in words, but in every part of the process, as jobs are carefully inspected before it leaves the workshop. This extended commitment to eminence has earned them long-standing loyalty from their clients, both big and small.
Beyond the machines and materials, Evolution Engineering’s greatest strength is its people.
“It’s about giving back to the community that supported us from the start,” said John.
“We love our community, so we try to do our part, whether that’s through sponsorships, making trophies for local events, or simply lending a hand where it’s needed.”
This dedication to their region extends beyond the workshop walls, as Evolution Engineering also partners with local schools, offering valuable hands-on experiences for students interested in engineering.
Evolution Engineering’s growth and success haven’t dulled their down-to-earth approach. For them, every job, big or small, is equally significant.
“Every customer is important to us,” says Joe.
“From local farmers to multi-million-dollar enterprises, they all get the same high level of service.”
Their team’s experience across sugar mills, mines, ports and all sorts of industries foundational to Mackay ensures they’re equipped to handle any task, with a specific focus on quality and precision.
As the company approaches its 20th anniversary, Evolution Engineering is committed to continuing their legacy of precision, quality, and community support, ensuring they remain the go-to choice for all your engineering solutions in the region.

TEN YEARS ON THE
Celebrating a decade in the Mackay region, Viking Mechanical owes its longevity and success to a dedicated team that not only loves what they do but also prioritises customer satisfaction every day.
Darrin Keates expressed that he and the entire Viking Mechanical team are thrilled to reach such a significant business milestone, highlighting the commendable achievements celebrated over the past ten years.
a greener approach to maintenance and repairs.
As opportunities continued to blossom, Viking Mechanical took to the national stage, opening two new diesel repair workshops in Mackay and Brisbane in 2017 and 2019. In recognition of their continued growth and commitment to customer service, they were awarded the Approved IVECO Service Centre for Mackay in 2019, followed by the Approved Jaguar Land Rover Service Centre in 2022.
“We are extremely proud of the many accomplishments we’ve made over the years. However, the event that kickstarted this adventure was when we were fortunate enough to win the Mackay Airport tender in 2015. This exposure really helped establish our brand,” Darrin explained.
The joining of such a large collaboration, and the positive effect of increased business, prompted Darrin and his wife, Nikki, to re-think their position.
“We decided to bite the bullet and expand our business into the automotive market, working hard on our growth and customer service!”
The team relocated from a single bay shed to a much larger facility, allowing them to offer a more diverse range of services to the automotive industry, including
of our successes,” Darrin remarked.
“Our commitment to building trust and loyalty within the region helps us reflect on how far we’ve come. We are proud and humbled to have had the support that has allowed us to grow into the business we are today,” Darrin expressed.
With sustainable business practices as a core value, Darrin and his team approach each situation with a can-do attitude, recognising and utilising the strengths of each member throughout all operations.
A family affair, Darrin and Nikki’s two children, Melissa and Shane, have also become valuable members of the Viking Mechanical team.
“A few years after starting the business, it became clear that involving the family in all areas was a smart move, and needless to say, this has cemented some
Darrin and Nikki are committed to encouraging younger generations to join the workforce, offering apprenticeships to school leavers and young adults while also inspiring young women to enter what has been a predominantly male-dominated industry.
“We encourage the younger generation to get involved in the industry as the automotive sector enters its most exciting phase in 100 years of motoring, with ever-evolving technology—especially electric, hybrid, and the advent of autonomous vehicles looming ever closer to reality,” Darrin explained.
Another proud moment Darrin and Nikki reflect on fondly is how their team operated during the unpredictability of COVID-19.
“Having our dedicated team remain consistently positive during the COVID-19 era showcases our resilience, with very little impact on what we did and continue to do. This made us immensely proud,” Darrin said.
THE FAST TRACK
“Receiving the Community Achievement Award – Nominee Ricoh Customer Service Award was perhaps the most rewarding moment, and this could not have been achieved without the outstanding commitment from our people.”
Looking towards the future, Darrin has many plans to advance Viking Mechanical in all areas, ensuring the business continues to offer quality vehicle maintenance and repairs with economical solutions.
We offer labour hire services to support remote clients with auto electrical and mechanical technicians to the Bowen Basin and surrounding districts.
“Our client base includes fleet
companies, daily drives, and a missioncritical state-wide fleet of IVECO vehicles, alongside our support for the resource sector. With over 80 years combined experience, their technical expertise covers a diverse range of brands, including European vehicles. We are committed to providing exceptional service and support to our clients in the years to come.”
As a reputable service centre, Viking Mechanical strives to keep abreast of technology, including EV and hybrid service requirements, and invests heavily in training, tooling, and support to ensure they can navigate the exciting advances in the automotive industry.

Explore Property Opens New Central Office
Expansion is at the heart of any successful business, in fact, many people believe that if you are not going forwards, you are going backwards. Explore Property Whitsundays has experienced this momentum first-hand this year with the recent opening of their brand-new office. Located on a prime piece of street frontage on Shute Harbour Road in Cannonvale, the new central headquarters’ metreage almost doubles the previous space and makes room for Explore’s growing workforce.
In just three years, owner of Explore Property Steve Marks, has been the driving force behind growth and success. Starting out with just three staff, including himself, Explore Property now boasts a team of 12, including six sales staff and a thriving property management team.
“Over the last 12 months the business has had enough momentum to self-propel,” said Steve.
“We’ve just kept hitting the mark and kept attracting new business.
“We have a good fun environment in our team, and it all comes down to really good hiring – the right people for the right jobs, and they are all part of moving forward in the right direction.”
As you enter the brandnew office space, located conveniently on the main entry road linking Cannonvale and Airlie Beach, you are immediately embraced by a homely, relaxed vibe that extends both from the welcoming staff and carefully considered aesthetics.
Steve discovered the new location ‘by chance’ and immediately fell in love with the open space that gave him the blank canvas in which to create his dream office space. Within just eight weeks he conducted a complete fit-out of the space, starting from scratch and finishing with a masterpiece.
Opting to create a modern yet
cosy feel where both clients and staff feel genuinely ‘at home’, Steve decided to source all furnishings from home stores rather than office suppliers.
As you enter the office you are immediately greeted by two comfy sofas and can choose to sit there or head to the meeting room which is equipped with a ‘dining room table’ for a more formal but ultimately relaxing setting.
Inside the central staff quarters, the homeliness continues, a large meeting table sits front and centre, a modern kitchen gives staff access to a range of handy appliances. To ensure the team are performing at their optimum they have the option of spending time in the “Therapy Corner” where you can enjoy a relaxing 20 minutes on the massage chair to reinvigorate.
The open plan office is subtly segregated into departments and a soundproof booth allows staff to have private conversations with clients when required.
Overall, the whole office embodies a relaxing yet efficient vibe, providing both staff and clients with a positive and motivational space within which to conduct local real estate business.
Looking forward to the year ahead, Steve remains proud to represent the Explore Property Group which is celebrating 10 years this year with a refreshing re-brand that adorns the new office space.
He is also inspired by the various development projects he is working with, namely The Grove where his team has sold 28 new homes to first home buyers in the last 12 months. He is also excited by his growing property management team, which has organically grown to include over 100 properties, something he wishes to double in the next year.
Whether you are buying, selling, renting or leasing, Explore Property Whitsundays looks forward to welcoming you through their brand-new office doors.

TRAP FOR THE SELF EMPLOYED
Most people move from ‘working for the man’ to being self-employed as they see a brighter financial future for their family. There is an all too common, sting in the tail that often comes back to bite them later in life. NO ONE IS PAYING INTO THEIR SUPER.
Generally, you start on the self-employed journey because you want the extra flexibility and the opportunity to earn more than you could on a wage. At a minimum you think you can at least earn your previous wage, as if not, why take the risk. The trick is to not only replace your wage but also the significant 11% on top of your wage the boss was paying into your super as well. It is not compulsory for self-employed people to pay into super and often that money ends up being used elsewhere. This might be ok if you’re building a business you can sell for lots of money at retirement, but most small businesses aren’t really saleable items.
We’ve guided hundreds of Whitsunday people
into retirement over the last 30 years and generally those who have both worked for wages steadily all their life are accruing between $600,000 and $1,000,000 in super combined. Higher income earners or those that did some salary sacrifice would have more and of course single people often less. The problem is there is a huge swathe of self-employed people whose super accounts stopped receiving contributions in the middle of their working lives. This has a dramatic effect on the end result due to compound interest.
Consider this, if your super averages a 9% return, every years’ contribution of say $10,000 in your 30’s will build up to around $130,000 by your mid 60’s. That is the effect of 30 years compound interest, it grows by 13 times! If you miss 10 years of $10,000 per year contributions in your 30’s you are talking $1,300,000 less in your super account at retirement! If you miss the same contributions in your 50’s each $10,000
only grows to $24,000 so it’s $240,000 less at retirement as it’s only in there compounding for 10 years.
If you’ve missed paying in for a period of time, the key is to jump on it ASAP. The quicker you start paying in the more the magic of compound interest will help. It’s never too late to start contributing to your super and you get a great tax break on doing so.
Come in for a free review of your super product, what sort of retirement you are on track for and some suggestions on how to work the tax and super system to make improvements. Make 2025 the year you take control of your finances!

HARVEST YOUR POTENTIAL
As A Leading Woman In Agriculture
Although women are progressively stepping into leadership roles in agriculture, the journey to success can often feel overwhelming for many young women. Fortunately, the 2025 Next Ratoon Program provides a supportive network of fellow growers, offering aspiring leaders invaluable insights from seasoned professionals, fresh perspectives and a fast track to personal and professional growth.
Judy Thatcher, a dedicated cane farmer and Mackay Area Committee grower representative, passionately advocates for young farmers, having witnessed firsthand the challenges they face today.
“I grew up on a cane farm 60 kilometres north of Mackay, and after leaving school, I pursued a career in banking and local government,” Judy said.
“I never expected to be a farmer, but when my dad passed away suddenly 29 years ago, my mother took over the family business, then I joined her nine years later.
“To say it was a steep learning curve is an understatement…There was no official mentoring program at the time, but the support from the Canegrowers network provided us with the quality advice we needed.”
Now, Judy is committed to ensuring that young women entering the industry receive the support
they need to succeed.
“The Next Ratoon mentoring program offers these young growers a safe place to share their aspirations, challenges, and successes,” Judy said.
“I believe it’s a game changer… the worth of women in the agricultural industry today is priceless.”
For Michelle Martin, District Manager for Canegrowers Mackay, the path to leadership has been about seizing every opportunity to learn and grow. Although relatively new to the industry, Michelle is passionate about showing women that they can find their place in agriculture beyond traditional roles.
“I’m not from an ag family, but my experiences in building, education, and even insurance have all contributed to my role - it’s amazing how different skills can actually assist in this field,” Michelle said. Michelle sees herself as a mentor for the next generation, particularly those exploring nontraditional roles in agriculture and encourages young women to “just give it a go.”
“Whether you’re out in the paddock, or in an office, we all play crucial roles in the ag industry…just give it a go and you’ll gain invaluable knowledge along the way.”
Running from February to August 2025, the
Next Ratoon Program is open to growers aged 18-40 connected to a CANEGROWERS member agribusiness, offering participants six months of personalised mentoring, exclusive events and resources.
Applications are open until December 13, 2024. To apply, visit www.canegrowers.com.au/next-ratoon

BUILDING MACKAY ONE GENERATION AT A TIME
Porters, a name synonymous with family heritage and community spirit, has been a cornerstone of the Mackay region for more than 140 years.
Founded in 1883 by Charles Porter, the business had humble beginnings when Charles arrived in Mackay to oversee the construction of the Empress of India Hotel, now known as Taylor’s Hotel.
Recognising the region’s growing demand for building materials, Charles seized the opportunity to establish a hardware and building supplies store, which quickly became a trusted local name.
Operating under the banner of Charles Porter & Sons, this small venture laid the foundation for what would evolve into a multigenerational enterprise — now spanning five generations of the Porter family.
What started as a response to a burgeoning town’s needs soon grew into an enduring legacy of craftsmanship, service, and community commitment.
Hayden Cargill, CEO of Porters, emphasised that community support has always been a core value for the Porters Group. The company’s long-standing
commitment to the region extends far beyond business. For decades, Porters has consistently backed local initiatives, charities, and organisations. “Locals supporting locals” isn’t just a slogan for them — it’s a way of life.
What began as a humble hardware business has evolved into a diversified group, now spanning 13 divisions, including hardware, plumbing supplies, building trade materials, glass and aluminium manufacturing, and truss and frame production. As part of major buying groups— Porters Mitre 10, Porters Plumbing Plus, and Inspirations Paint — Porters Mitre 10 provides a comprehensive range of products, catering to the needs of homeowners, builders, and tradespeople across Mackay and the Whitsundays.
Porters Mitre 10 remains a true reflection of its heritage: a family business with deep roots in Mackay, committed to giving back to the community that has supported it for over a century. Whether through sponsoring local teams or employing local talent, Porters Mitre 10 continues to thrive by staying true to its values of family, heritage, and heart.

Big careers with small town vibe
Tucked away in the local Rabobank Ayr branch is a powerhouse of financial expertise with four local women leading the charge.
A rewarding career in agriculture
Emma West, Amy Smail, Sherell Lando and Elise Molyneux enjoy supporting Rabobank farming clients in the Burdekin and across the broader state in achieving their farm business goals.
Emma has spent her life in the Burdekin, growing up on a cane farm at Millaroo. In her role as Relationship Analyst she loves being hands on, working closely with local farmers and supporting the five Rabobank Rural Managers across both Ayr and Townsville.
Likewise, Amy joined the branch five years ago and over that time has been able to grow, moving from Relationship Analyst to Rural Officer, and now relishing her role as a Credit Analyst.
“I work across a number of different commodities and so it has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge - it has been amazing.”
“I love the small-town flexibility while pursuing a career that some organisations only offer in major hubs.”
For Sherell and Elise, also Credit Analysts, the offer of a career with a company like Rabobank with 61 branches across Australia and a strong global network is exciting.
Sherell said the move from accountancy to banking has been rewarding. Currently part of the Rabobank Ignite Women in Leadership program, she said the opportunity allows her to grow personally and professionally, whilst connecting with other colleagues from Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
“The interaction and diversity across the program is incredible. We are being challenged and I have learnt so much.”
Completing a Bachelor of Ag Science after university, Elise wasn’t sure where her next step would take her. She soon found her way into finance, kicking off her banking career with Rabobank Dalby and has not looked back since.
“I love the variety and complexity in ag, many of our farmers are very scientific and take bespoke approaches in how they manage issues like sustainability and technology. I am always curious and find it really interesting.”
100% focused on food and agribusiness
Agriculture is woven through Rabobank’s DNA, a bank founded by farmers, for farmers 125 years ago, Rabobank has a unique understanding of the industry and the importance of taking a longer-term view.
Sherell said as a cane farmer herself Rabobank’s sole focus on farming really resonated with her.
“Rabobank understands the ebbs and flows of farming, and taking a long-term view means partnering with farmers throughout the seasonal challenges.”
For Emma there is something special about being close with local clients and really getting to understand their business.
“From the moment I started working at Rabobank, the focus on our clients and community aligned with my own personal values. I can confidently say I have found my happy place in my career.”
Rabobank’s strong community values
As a proud global cooperative Rabobank is passionate about being local and active in rural communities.
This year the ladies used their volunteer Community Day to support the Rural Women Unite Fund Raising Lunch which is about putting the spotlight on rural women’s mental health.
They said there are many opportunities to give back and some of their colleagues from Ayr and Townsville spent time packing food boxes to be delivered to those in need.
Emma, Sherell and Elise are all active with local school Eisteddfods and sporting events with their children.
Elise said focus on community is part of Rabobank’s value and that it’s great to be surrounded by people who are all on the same path and share the same values.
Call the Rabobank Ayr team on 4790 2200, or your local branch on 1300 30 30 33 for more information.

WITH COTTER BUILDERS
Since being founded by Michael and Madison Cotter almost a decade ago, Cotter Builders has gone from strength to strength in the industry. Flashing back to 2015, Michael Cotter was pursuing his building license, while Madison Cotter had just obtained her Bachelor of Architectural Design and Building Design License. Their paths crossed, and their shared vision had transformed into the thriving business that is Cotter Builders.
Cotter Builders, a family-run and orientated business, whose inspiration is led by the owner’s two small boys, Hayes and Spencer, specialises in high-end custom new homes and renovations in the Mackay and Whitsunday region. Within the team, they have an in-house building designer, an interiors team alongside their construction team, which is something co-owner Madison Cotter says sets them apart from the rest.
From the start of the design phase, all the way through to the end of the construction, the team at Cotter Builders always ensure they do whatever it takes to deliver a premium product for their highly valued clients.
“Our clients tend to become our lifelong friends. What we are creating here is a lifestyle, and we want our clients to be a part of it”.
Cotter Builders has established itself as a leader in Mackay’s building industry by providing integrated design and construction services all under one roof. Unlike many builders who require clients to choose from a database or source their own plans,
Cotter Builders manages the entire process. Their commitment to excellence is evident, as nearly every home they create has garnered awards in its respective categories.
Villa Ta Lumi, one of Cotter Builders’ standout new homes, was recently awarded the prestigious 2024 Master Builders BUSSQ Super President’s Award, best house in its Category and Bathroom of the Year for the Mackay and Whitsundays region. Its stunning design, characterised by a striking façade and a clever fusion of Coastal, Mediterranean and Contemporary styles, has captured significant attention on social media, including a feature by the well-known Three Birds Renovations to their 1 million followers.
Alongside Villa Ta Lumi, the Cotters latest project, Villa Athena, is also generating buzz online, further showcasing Cotter Builders’ commitment to excellence and innovative design.
Owners Madison and Michael are dedicated to supporting the Mackay community by offering school-based work experience, apprenticeships, flexible family-friendly schedules for their staff, and actively participating in local events.
Additionally, Madison serves as a mentor for the Master Builders Women in Building initiative. Cotter Builders prioritise sourcing materials locally, partnering with businesses like Porters Mackay to strengthen the community further.
“We like giving back to the community and supporting other local businesses,” Madison explained.
To ensure they keep up with industry trends and regulations, Cotter Builders is part of numerous industry bodies, including Master Builders and the Building Design Association of QLD, who always keep the business up to date with the current legislation and education. However, Madison explained that they go even further to ensure the business stays ahead of the pack.
If you are looking for a quality, bespoke new home and a building experience like no other from start to finish, contact Cotter Builders who are ready to take on the challenge.

With an impressive portfolio encompassing awardwinning residential, commercial and industrial projects over the years, the company has proven itself to be a trusted leader in the construction industry.
Their recent achievements at the 2024 Master Builders Mackay & Whitsunday Housing and Construction Awards, further solidified their position as one of the best builders in the state after securing eight accolades across all three divisions.
What impressed both the judges and their clients is the company’s ability to provide customised solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial needs—a distinctive quality that elevates them in a highly competitive market. Their holistic approach ensures clients receive exceptional service and support at every stage of the construction process.
A prime example of this commitment to excellence is the Whitsunday Anglican School STEAM Centre, which was honoured with the prestigious McInnes Wilson Lawyers Project of the Year Award.
Director and Construction Manager Ben Hilder expressed pride in the recognition, noting that “to receive multiple accolades across both sectors of the industry is a significant achievement and a testament to our crew out there.”
Faced with challenges like restricted site access and the need to carry out construction amid ongoing school operations, the team demonstrated exceptional professionalism and dedication, successfully delivering the project on time and within budget. Their remarkable commitment not only met but exceeded expectations, setting a new standard in the industry.
Fergus Builders’ dedication to residential construction is clearly reflected in their recent achievements, which celebrate their meticulous attention to detail in creating stunning homes. In the commercial sector, Fergus Builders has made significant strides with notable projects, including the construction of the Mackay Apartments and the North Jacklin Motor Group refurbishment. These endeavours not only elevate the aesthetic appeal of their surroundings but also enhance functionality, delivering exceptional value and satisfaction to their clients.
Ben recognises that local contractors play a crucial role in Fergus’ success, acknowledging the high standard of this combined effort to deliver excellence.
“Although Fergus Builders won the awards, it really goes out to everyone involved in the project.”
This collaborative ethos highlights Fergus Builders’ reputation as a community-oriented business that values partnerships with local stakeholders.
With a solid foundation built on extensive experience in commercial and industrial construction, Fergus Builders boasts an impressive portfolio that spans a diverse array of projects, from educational institutions and hospitality venues to sports facilities and community centres.

PUT A LID ON
YOUR PROPERTY TIN LID
From minefields to construction sites, Kate and Nic Buhler’s business was fuelled by the uniting of different paths. Kate started as an operator at the mines and Nic owned a roofing business with a close friend. This all changed in 2013 when Nic’s business partner decided to go in a different direction and Kate received the joyous news of her pregnancy. In 2021 The couple decided to create a family company and Tin Lid Enterprises was born that same year, along with their second child.
While Nic is busy on top of houses directing the roofing side of things, Kate has her head in the books, sorting all things admin and quoting. Alongside themselves, they have a team of eight individuals including two apprentices, one who will be fully qualified in January and the other whom started in July.
Tin Lid specialise in metal roofing and do everything from big commercial properties to domestic projects. Happy to take on almost any job, they love nothing more than fitting a premium quality roof and are ready to help you with any roofing project you may throw at them.
Tin Lid is known for its versatility across various projects, but they’ve also tackled significant undertakings in Airlie
Beach, including the roof of the new fire station, the Shute Harbour Boat Terminal, and the upcoming Mackay Resource Centre which will start construction early next year.
Kate expressed her excitement about these large projects and giving back to the community:
“The fire station was a major undertaking that we’re really proud of, especially since it’s something the town truly needs,” she shared.
What makes Tin Lid unique is their close-knit crew who are more like family and can often be found hanging out after work.
“They love roofing, it is a really great team, and they’re all so proud of their job and their work,” Kate added.
This year, in just their third year of operation, Tin Lid proudly won a prestigious Master Builders Award – the Ken & Nola Clark Memorial Award, which shows their dedication to their business.
When they aren’t scaling roofs and drawing up quotes, Nic and Kate take some much-needed rest camping in Lake Proserpine with their family.
Need a new roof? Make sure to call Tin Lid Enterprises.

SELECTING INSURANCE OPTIONS
Understanding what is covered by your car insurance policy can help you avoid unexpected costs in the future. So, how do you know if you have the right cover for your vehicle?
Let’s take a brief look at options
• Excess – Check the standard Excess amount payable especially at renewal.
Make sure the amount of excess does not increase to keep the cost the same.
Also, important to check the age excess for young drivers, consider if you can accept a higher amount of excess if you have more than one accident a year?
• Kilometres –Pay as you go insurance can be great however the costs are enormous if you go over the km’s registered and then have an accident.
So, it is best to check regularly perhaps leave a reminder in the car or Calendar to check your odometer every three months.
• Hire Car - Different options are available upon request
Consider for a small cost up front, compared to if your vehicle is not road worthy, and immediately off the road following an accident.
In some locations parts may be unavailable, or the repairer unable to commence for weeks.
Some policies have an unlimited hire car option which can be of great benefit if you do not have access to another vehicle. Especially as parts shortages continue
• Windscreen Inclusion – Newer model vehicles have lots of high-end technology to help keep you and your family safe.
The cost of windscreens now range between $120 to upward of $3000 with additional costs for calibrating radar units, rain sensors and codes. Once this option is removed from your policy it is difficult to get back. So defiantly worth including.

HABITUDE ARCHITECTS OF REAL BEHAVIOUR CHANGE
In a world where traditional methods for addressing behavioural challenges often fall short, Habitude is redefining how behaviour consulting can create real, lasting change.
How, you say? The key lies in a holistic approach and a guiding principle: “Do different, better.”
Habitude’s innovative work has earned significant recognition in the Mackay region, including two prestigious honours at the recent Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce Best in Business Awards.
Dr. Suzanne Francisco, the Owner and CEO, won the ‘Mover of Mountains’ award, and Habitude was a top-three finalist for the ‘Next Big Thing’ award.
Drawing in on her deep background in education and disability care, Suzanne’s journey began in classrooms where she witnessed firsthand how students, parents and teachers struggled with behavioural issues. This experience fuelled her drive to fill the gaps in traditional support systems.
After earning a doctorate focused on teacher behaviours through the lens of attachment theory, Suzanne was able to forge an approach that fuses educational principles with behavioural strategies. These strategies are now applied at Habitude in ways that reach across schools, homes, communities and even workplaces.
Suzanne’s shift from educator to behaviour consultant marked a pivotal moment in her career. She realised that true behavioural change goes deeper than addressing surface-level symptoms - it
requires a comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors in each person’s life. This insight has shaped Habitude’s client interactions, creating an environment where individuals feel valued, heard and empowered to make meaningful changes.
Since its founding, Habitude has transformed countless lives. For example, young individuals who once isolated themselves have re-entered society through employment and social engagement, thanks to the targeted interventions led by Suzanne and her team.
Similarly, clients emerging from dysfunctional family environments have learned to live independently, proving that small but intentional changes can profoundly improve mental health and overall wellbeing.
One standout program at Habitude is Learning@ Life, which engages clients in activities designed to build skills in supportive settings. In one case, an NDIS client has found fulfillment volunteering at a local playgroup, gaining social skills and selfesteem through personalised tasks and a sense of responsibility.
Habitude’s work doesn’t stop at the individual level… it even extends to families, too.
Programs like Circle of Security and 1-2-3 Magic empower parents to better understand their children’s emotional and behavioural needs. By equipping caregivers with effective tools for fostering positive behaviour, Habitude strengthens
the family dynamic and helps create more supportive home environments.
Be sure to book for their recently opened Bee-Haven Sensory Play sessions. Facilitated by Oh Sensory, themed learning experiences encourage children of all abilities to activate their senses through safe, tactile, food-based mediums. Watch this space as ideas are buzzing!
Stemming from Habitude’s willingness to implement evident-based practices, Suzanne and her team successfully use a range of proven methods, such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) for non-verbal clients and the Zones of Regulation program, which teaches emotional awareness and self-regulation.
Within the walls of Habitude, the inviting atmosphere creates a safe and comforting space. With its variety of quirky chairs, toys, and cozy areas for all ages, the centre offers an environment where individuals can relax and engage in programs without the barren, clinical feel.
As Habitude grows, so does its impact. Suzanne’s vision prioritises the capabilities of individuals - not their limitations, with a mission to promote healthier relationships within families, schools, workspaces and communities. Through this perspective, Habitude is reshaping society’s understanding of behaviours that challenge and proving that with the right approach, real change is possible.

The tour includes a visit to “The Love Shack,” a John Deere Museum filled with vintage memorabilia, a nod to the farm’s namesake.
As Karinda explains, “Farming isn’t just about farming. It’s about helping others understand where their food comes from and the work that goes into it.”
“My father-in-law used to say, ‘Until we run the cities out of food and water, they’ll never understand what it takes, because farmers will work to feed the nation.’”

xplore the latest in scalp health with treatments designed to promote fuller, healthier hair.
The secret to healthy hair is deeper rooted than you may think. Many individuals in a bid to get luscious long locks, neglect the most important part of a hair care routine... the scalp.
The Japanese have recognised the vitality of scalp care for centuries, through beauty treatments including the Japanese ‘head spa’, which they incorporated into their routines long before the rest of the world.
Why Scalp Treatments Have Captivated Japanese Culture
In Japanese culture, hair is deeply intertwined with concepts of beauty and health. A healthy scalp is viewed as essential for achieving beautiful hair.
The scalp is composed of thick skin, which can easily become clogged and develop sebum buildup. If not properly cared for, this can result in dryness and itchiness.
Maintaining a clean and balanced scalp promotes healthy, shiny, and long hair, while a dry, flaky scalp can lead to issues such as hair loss, breakage, dandruff, and dullness.
While many people forget about this small step in their routine, it is crucial for maintaining the healthy and happy hair that you desire, especially as the skin is the largest organ of the body.
Below are some tips on how to keep your scalp rooted in greatness:
5 Top Tips to Keep your Scalp Healthy
A healthy scalp doesn't happen overnight, and it's important to recognise that everyone's scalp is unique. To nurture your scalp, start by gaining insight into its condition and your hair type.
Have a consistent wash routine
Finding the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type is essential, so take the time to experiment. Pay attention to how often you wash your hair. If you're washing it daily and
experiencing itchiness or dryness on your scalp, consider extending the time between washes to every few days. On the other hand, washing your hair too infrequently can lead to oil and product buildup. Once you've established the ideal washing frequency for your hair, try to stick to that routine.
Watch Out for Buildup
Buildup on our scalps from products, pollution, and hard water can suffocate hair follicles, preventing them from receiving the moisture and protein they need to thrive. Incorporating detox products into your hair care routine is an effective way to combat this. Look for a clarifying shampoo that gently removes impurities without stripping your scalp or hair of essential moisture. Choose formulations that are free from silicones, sulfates, parabens, and other harmful ingredients to ensure a clean and healthy scalp.
Brush your Hair
Brushing your hair enhances its appearance and is vital for scalp care. It distributes natural oils from the roots to the ends, acting as a natural conditioner.
Massage your scalp and avoid oils
Insufficient blood circulation can prevent hair follicles from receiving the nutrients needed for healthy hair growth. Regular scalp massages can effectively boost circulation.
It's also wise to limit oils, as the Malassezia fungus, linked to dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, thrives on them. While pre-shampoo oil treatments can be beneficial if washed out, leaving oils on the scalp post-wash can worsen inflammation and lead to itching and flaking.
Invest in a water filter
If you have mineral-treated water, calcium and magnesium can react with your shampoo and sebum, causing residue that clogs follicles and scalp irritation. Using a good filter removes these metals, resulting in softer water that cleanses and hydrates your scalp.
Here’s to happy and healthy scalps and hair!
