I’ve only lived in the Burdekin for a month and I’m already feeling pride for the region, but I can’t compare it to the pride I sense from the locals I meet every day.

Licciardello riffed through the night while Callan Sunderland roamed through the crowd trying to get old anecdotes out of the crowd members: the saucier, the better.

Burdekin pride was well and truly on display last Saturday night at Burdekin FC’s 50 Year Gala Dinner, where those associated with the club gathered, some coming from as far as Western Australia, to celebrate the memories, achievements, and mateships of the club.

The room was full of love for Burdekin FC and the life members, committee and players clearly appreciated an opportunity to relive the memories.

I loved the chat show format of the evening where emcees Michael Taylor and Monica

It made me wonder if I’ll ever become a life member of a sporting organisation and based on what I saw on the weekend, I certainly hope I do.

Speaking of Burdekin pride, Gracie Hosie is back in town!

I’m sure many of you will be familiar with Gracie from her work with the Water Festival, Youth Council and her many other ventures while living in the Burdekin.

Gracie moved to Brisbane this year for university but has been helping me out this week with some work experience.

Make sure to keep an eye out for some of her stories in this edition and next.

urdekin’s local All Saints Anglican Church and Ladies Guild generously donated a total of twelve priest stoles to seasonal workers of the Solomon Islands.

Every Sunday morning, several Solomon Islanders, who travel to Ayr for seasonal work, take to the pews of Ayr’s All Saints Anglican Church to participate in services, donate to missions, and assist the parish in their worship. These small good deeds have not gone unseen, in fact, Karen Allen, the priest in charge, states, “Their presence in the church makes our worship so much better.”

Stoles are a silk vestment worn over the shoulders of a priest during service. In the calendar of Christianity there are four seasons, and within those four seasons, a priest’s stoles change from green, purple, red and white. Within the twelve stoles donated by the Parish and Ladies Guild, four sets were provided covering the Christian seasons and special occasions. The Solomon Islanders expressed great appreciation and are eager to bring home the stoles to their community parish.

Over the years the group of seasonal workers has grown, and so has their presence in the church. Every Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening, the group performs their own service and have regularly expressed to the parish the challenges

50 Years Of Panther Pride

T

he Burdekin Memorial Hall was a room filled with passion and pride last Saturday, October 14 as Burdekin FC celebrated 50 years of club football.

Laughs were shared and tears were shed as guest speakers told stories from the last 50 years, with some attendees coming from as far as Western Australia to join their former teammates for the celebration.

“The night was an opportunity to recognise our life members, all committees, coaches, players, sponsors and volunteers,” said Burdekin FC President Laurence Dal Santo.

“From the early beginnings, the club has had strong membership and community spirit which has been achieved by our success on and off the field.

“As we look to the future, we have gone back to our original club colours of black and white for our playing strip which looks awesome.

“We continue to have the best ground in north Queensland and are looking at upgrading both our junior and senior amenities in the coming year.”

Positive Diagnosis Minister Responds To

Break In At CT Scanner Request Home Hill State High H

ome Hill State High School was broken into over the weekend with the Department of Education confirming the break-in occurred overnight on Sunday, October 15, with damage discovered to the school property on Monday morning.

F

ollowing years of campaigning for a $2.86 million CT scanner at Ayr Hospital, the Minister for Health, Shannon Fentiman, has responded positively to requests by opening a Business Case submission on the matter.

A public letter outlining plans was sent last week with the Minister stating that she understands “that each rural community and its population needs are unique”.

“Each requires a tailored model in order to provide appropriate health care services to reduce the need for residents to travel for health care,” she said.

“We understand that health emergencies often happen outside of business hours, which is why it is so important that a CT scanner is available to Ayr locals through Queensland Health, 24 hours per day.”

Currently, there is one privately owned CT scanner at Ayr Diagnostic Imaging (ADI), and although this services the community during work hours, it is closed in the evenings.

As a result, up to 15 patients a week are transported to Townsville Hospital for emergency CT scans.

Most of these patients are suffering from symptoms of a stroke or a significant injury and they need to travel one hour to receive a CT scan.

They are largely transported to Townsville

by the Ayr ambulance and a paramedic, which removes these valuable services from the region during that time.

Member for Burdekin, Dale Last, said that while the recent news from the Health Minister is a step in the right direction, “we won’t hear the sound of champagne corks popping, yet”.

“The celebrations are definitely on hold until the machine is in place and patients are receiving their scans here in Ayr - that’s when we will know we have succeeded,” he said.

“By acknowledging the importance of a CT scanner 24 hours a day, the Minister has indicated that we have proven a need for the scanner and that is always a difficult hurdle to clear.

“It is an acknowledgement that would not have happened without community support.”

“We aren’t across the finish line and, rather than celebrating, I’ll be focussing on ensuring community support is maintained.

“The fact that we already have staff who can operate the scanner means we have a strong business case, but it still comes down to a decision by the Minister.”

Ayr Hospital is the largest level three facility in Queensland currently without a CT scanner.

The incident caused much inconvenience to the school as it was to celebrate its Sports Recognition Parade on Monday morning, forcing the Parade to be postponed to this morning, Thursday, October 19 at 8:45am.

Access to the office was also limited, meaning the school was unable to accept payments and take queries throughout the day.

“The school’s administration building suffered damage to windows and interior furniture such as filing cabinets,” a spokesperson for the Department of Education said.

“No classrooms were affected, and lessons continued as normal.

“The Queensland Police Service has been contacted and the Department will continue to work closely with them as investigations continue.”

Administration staff were relocated to another area of the school while police investigated and cleaning and repairs were undertaken, although regular office administration resumed by Monday afternoon.

“Schools are important community assets that deserve to be protected,” the spokesperson said.

“We want the community to be our eyes and ears and report any suspicious activity to police or contact the School Watch hotline 13 17 88.”

yr man Billy Smallwood was reported missing on Monday, October 17 with Queensland Police confirming on Tuesday, October 18 that he had been located deceased.

Queensland Police reported that Mr Smallwood was last seen around 10:40pm on October 12 at a Cameron Street address.

Mr Smallwood spoke to family on the phone at 1:00pm the following day and had not been seen or heard from since.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Willcox Slams Gillnet Home Hill’s Great Minds Fishing Ban In Parliament Take Out Opti-MINDS State Finals

n Sunday October 15, a team of seven Home Hill State High School students were named state champions for the Opti-MINDS media communications category. The students travelled to Brisbane on Friday the 13th after winning the regional level competition, automatically qualifying the team for the state finals where they competed against schools across the state.

Opti-MINDS is a program that is offered to kids in school between preschool to year twelve, providing the opportunity to embark on a proposed challenge in one of the four categories: Language literature, media communications, science engineering and social sciences.

When competing in the regional competition the students were given six weeks to prepare a solution to a proposed stimulus, whilst at the state competition the team only had a total of three hours to tackle the prompt; “influence has its own voice”. One of the team’s favourite parts of the solution

process was “the light bulb moment one of us had to then kick start our solution process,” Martina Bojack stated. The team’s ten minute presentation was marked on humour, creativity, audience engagement and unpredictability, all areas the students successfully excelled in.

The team had a number of support networks who assisted in sponsoring travel and guiding the team through this opportunity.

“We would like to thank Ms Flynn, Mrs Young and Mr Kingma as well as the local organisations and businesses that assisted with the cost of our travel,” said Jacob Machin on behalf of the team.

The school and the region are extremely proud of the students’ efforts and to have walked away as state champions is more than what the students were expecting to get out of this experience.

D

uring this month’s Parliamentary session, Andrew Willcox, the Federal Member for Dawson, delivered an impassioned speech directed towards the Federal Government. His address focused on the recent prohibition of commercial gillnet fishing.

In a display of frustration, the MP vehemently expressed his concern that the Federal Government’s actions are stripping away the livelihoods and economic opportunities of over 90 licensed fishermen in the North Queensland region.

“In June, a joint media release from Federal and Queensland Governments have said they’re going to ban gillnet fishing… no consultation with the community, no consultation with our fishermen, and short time frames! This is going to happen by the end of this year,” Mr Willcox said.

“I was talking to one of these fishermen, and he happened to have a daughter who’s in grade 12, a straight A student who wants to go to university to become a doctor, a GP, and we certainly need more of those in rural and regional Australia.

“And now, with the stroke of a pen from Canberra, this dream is being taken away.

It’s absolutely disgraceful!”

Mr Willcox also questioned Parliament about the effects on the communities, detailing that it’s not just the fishermen’s lives who would be negatively impacted.

“As we know, the fishermen operate in a tough environment, out in the sun and out in the salt. So, they need a lot of shackles, ropes, floats, anchors, all those sorts of things. Without this, the chandlery shops are going to go out of business, and the ice producers.

“The boatbuilders, the repairers, they’re all going to go out of business. The outboard sales and service, going out of business.

“When you take the supply out, the price will go up. So, then, we’ll be relying on more imported fish. So, rather than having fish from our pristine waters… we’ll be importing lesser-quality fish, and prices will be skyrocketing!”

Mr Willcox exclaimed that he will “not be taking this lying down” and has written to the Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek, on this issue.

“I’m calling on Minister Plibersek to come to my electorate, do some community consultation, talk to the fishermen, have a discussion, and see how the fishermen fish!”

Clear Waters For Millaroo T

he controversial closure of the Millaroo community swimming-pool outraged the small township earlier this year, but headway has now been made thanks to open discussions between Millaroo representatives and the Burdekin Shire Council.

A meeting was held this week to explore alternatives to the swimming-pool, with the Council willing to consider other community centred facilities.

They are, however, firmly sticking to their decision to close the swimming-pool permanently.

Frustrations within the community group have simmered considerably, with many Millaroo residents pleased to be working collaboratively and constructively with Council.

Some, however, are still saddened that they no longer have a local swimming-pool.

It was in May this year that the swimming-pool closed for the winter months, a letter sent to residents informing them of the change.

“Everyone used to gather at the pool,” said local resident Jody MacDonald.

“We’d bring down a Weber and a pack of sausages and we all use to spend time together as a community.”

Residents now have to drive 20 minutes to

the closest swimming-pool in Clare and are worried that if rumours are true that Council also plan to close this pool, they will need to drive even further into Ayr.

Meanwhile, Ms MacDonald says that it was Council’s responsibility to maintain the pool in the first place to ensure it did not reach this level of disrepair.

Thankfully Council have confirmed $150,000 will soon be spent on upgrading the Clare pool.

She also says that the condition of the pool was the reason it was under-used.

In regards to the Millaroo pool, however, Council states that because it is about 50 years old and coming to the end of its useful life, there was no guarantee of structural integrity moving forward.

Council asserts that it was closed because of “public safety” and that they engaged with a “specialist sport and recreation firm to undertake a review of all Council’s swimming pools”.

“The decision was backed by relevant information and analysis,” said a spokesperson.

“The unacceptable public safety risk, coupled with relatively low usage and significant works to bring the pool up to an acceptable standard, necessitated immediate action to ensure the well-being of the public.

“In addition to the public safety concerns, the Strategy identified that the pool’s pebblecrete finish had reached the end of its useful life, the pool shell is aging and the chemical dosing equipment needed to be replaced.”

Despite the undercurrent of frustration, however, the community has contributed to positive talks with Council who say they are willing to “design, fund and implement alternate community recreation activities in the township”.

On the table, are other facilities that aim to bring the small rural community together.

These include a stage and soundshell at the site which will provide a location for small music festivals and other community events.

Residents are also keen to encourage more visitation to the township and would like to see comfort facilities established.

These include an Up River Trail between Millaroo and Dalbeg where chairs, BBQs and other amenities will be provided for tourists along the way.

Discussions are still underway with projects well received by Council.

It is hoped these discussions will form the basis of a community action plan for Council to work collaboratively with Millaroo residents to implement.

Fencing Complete

T

he Ayr Aerodrome is unveiling a new look, with the new fencing project recently completed, within the budget allotted of $285,243.

Ensuring safety and easing operations of the Ayr Aerodrome, the Fencing Project was partially funded from a $139,000 grant from the Australian Government’s Regional Airports Program Round 3, and $146,242 contribution from Burdekin Shire Council.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the enhanced safety measures achieved through this fencing initiative not only benefits the Royal Flying Doctors, Department of Defence, Ayr Flying Services, commercial helicopter operators and flying enthusiasts but also contributes to the overall resilience of the region.

“The installation of 7125m of 1500mm high stock fence and gates has assured a harmonious environment where aircraft operators and local wildlife, such as macropods and other animals, co-exist without impacting each other within the aerodrome premises,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“This crucial improvement will also play a vital role during challenging times like flooding, allowing for emergency landings and evacuations when highways are affected.

“I would like to thank the Federal Government for working together with Burdekin Shire Council to deliver this critical safety upgrade and improve aerodrome safety for all local, regional, interstate and defence operators.”

Hospital Thanks Rotary Club Of Ayr

T

he Ayr Health Service has shared their gratitude with the Rotary Club of Ayr following two donations across the last two years totalling $7,000.

Director of Nursing and Facility Manager Tracey Gabiola said the funds will go towards new patient monitoring equipment and thanked one member in particular for her efforts.

“Our community is very fortunate to have Rotary Club of Ayr support many organisations ,” she said.

“We’re also fortunate to have Amanda (Norton) who’s been an active member in that group for many years and she’s acutely aware of the various items of equipment that we need in our service, so she’s been the conduit between what Rotary can of-

fer, whether it be support for activities or financially.”

Ms Norton works as a Clinical Nurse at Ayr Health Service while filling the role of President with Rotary Club of Ayr, saying money was raised through raffles and the iconic annual Duck Race.

“We need to help our local hospital because we know they need equipment,” she said.

“We’ve definitely had an increase in demand for our services over the past couple of years “added Ms Gabiola.

“Fortunately for us we have organisations such as Rotary who are willing to provide Ayr Health Service Clinical Nurse / Rotary this service to the entire community. “

Free Glasses For Ayr State High Thanks To School-Based Nurse

S

tudents at Ayr State High School received free pairs of glasses after the school welcomed OneSight, an initiative providing free eye exams and glasses to schools and communities.

The initiative was brought to the school

by School-based Youth Health Nurse Cassandra Arboit who is employed by Queensland Health and has worked with the school for over 13 years.

Ms Arboit works within the student support team which also includes the School Chaplain, Behaviour Support Teacher, Psychologist, Guidance Officers and other staff.

“My role in that is social and emotional support and health promotion with a wellbeing focus,” she said.

Ms Arboit reached out to OneSight who conducted vision screening last term, accessible to all year 7 and 10 students.

Students who required glasses were given a free pair on Monday, October 17 while students who required further appointments were given a vouchers.

146 students and 10 staff members where screened.

“Out of that, there were 55 pairs of glasses issued which is pretty awesome,” Ms Arboit said.

WHO CAN?

Burdekin Community Advisory Network Can A group of passionate Burdekin residents are working hard as the link between the community and the public health system, keeping the people of the Burdekin informed with the region’s hospital happenings.

The Burdekin Community Advisory Network (CAN) is one of five networks in the Townsville Hospital and Health Service catchment area.

Consisting of members of the community, services like police and ambulance and local organisations, CAN meets monthly to discuss and advocate for funding, awareness, and efficiency in the health system.

Burdekin CAN, along with the other networks, is represented at the Consumer Advisory Council which looks at issues across the entire Townsville Hospital and Health Service catchment area from a consumer and community perspective.

Barbara Stockdale is a community mem-

ber who was appointed to the board of CAN since retiring after 41 years of working with the local council.

“I wanted to be involved in something in the community but didn’t know what was already out there in terms of organisations and support providers,” she said.

“I’m still learning something at every meeting and it’s good to see what goes on in the background because I think a lot of people don’t realise how much is actually involved in the running of a hospital.”

CAN are currently campaigning to secure a CT scanner for Ayr Hospital, a campaign that has been ongoing for over three years.

The campaign has received the support of State Member for Burdekin Dale Last MP and over 2,500 locals thanks to a recent petition.

“The aim is to get the word out to the community to make them aware and have them backing us like they did through the petition,” Ms Stockdale said.

“Even though they know they can’t assist too much, it’s just a matter of them understanding that the community needs a CT scanner to hopefully save a lot of time for the hospitals and a lot of heartache for patients having to travel to Townsville.

“If we’ve got the public understanding why

we need it and they know there’s a need for it, then I think that helps the push from the political side of things as well.”

Balancing Conservation Orchid Society Elects and Community Concerns New President Council’s Flying Fox Management

n Sunday September 30, members of the Ayr and District Orchid and Allied Plant Society (ADOAPS) met at the home of President Sharon Kenny for their Annual General Meeting.

Most executive members were re-elected unopposed, but Charles Lee was elected as President and Sharon was elected to a well-deserved rest as Vice President after 13 years of guiding the society.

Flying foxes are nocturnal creatures, foraging at night and roosting in the early hours of the morning.

Residents can deter flying foxes by creating noise or placing visual deterrents. These activities have proven most effective within a 45-minute timeframe before sunrise.

The main concern of Burdekin Shire Council is to ensure a co-existence in harmony, between local wildlife and our community, particularly the black flying foxes, said Mayor Lyn McLaughlin.

After careful consideration of factors including legislative requirements, fruiting and flowering seasons of trees, birthing periods and environmental conditions including temperature, the Council has ini-

tiated a scheme to address the presence of flying foxes.

“We are striving to strike a balance that safeguards both the natural habitat and the comfort of residents,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“Council has transitioned from recent active disturbance activities to a monitoring and public education stance until January 2024, at which point flying fox numbers and activity will be reassessed.

“Flying foxes generally deliver offspring between September and November, followed by the creching phase during which adults supervise young one’s incapable of sustaining flight until January, management responses will be planned to align with the natural lifecycle of these creatures.”

The Burdekin community is urged to promptly report sick or injured wildlife to authorised wildlife carers or contact RSPCA Queensland at 1300 264 625.

An ordinary meeting, chaired by the new President Charles, followed the closing of the AGM. In his opening remarks, Charles stated that he wished to keep the formal meetings short and concise.

Meetings usually starts with a short business meeting followed by a technical talk and discussion before the raffle is drawn.

It was also decided to offer a year’s free membership to all members of the general public who bought a plant from our stall.

Afternoon tea, a bit of socialising and casting popular vote on plants tabled is next.

Charles hopes to have a schedule of topics for the ensuing 12 months for publication at the next meeting on 5th November.

He also asked members to nominate topics for discussion that are of interest to them.

The theme of the next meeting will be ‘potting mixes for specific genera’.

he FC Caledonia highland dance studio has been busy, seeing seven Burdekin youth dancers to Canberra to compete in the Canberra Highland Dancing Championships, Titles, and Highland Competition.

It was clear that the calibre of the Burdekin youth dancers is impressive, returning home with a sweep of prizes and awards for their efforts.

“While dancers from north Queensland don’t often compete against dancers from NSW and Victoria, it was wonderful to receive recognition that the standard of Highland dancing in the Burdekin is so high,” explained Fiona Christie, dance teacher of FC Caledonia.

The dancers particularly enjoyed wearing their woollen kilts and velvet vests during the unexpected cold snap that plunged through Canberra over the championships.

“We were all missing the cold weather, but we are straight back into work, preparing for our annual National Dancing Association of Australia Highland Dancing exam-

ver the weekend, Australia’s decision resounded around the country and with over 80% of the people in the electorate of Dawson voting no, it was a clear result.

The Albanese Labor Government proposed an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, and while highlighting the issues of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, is extremely important, I am fundamentally opposed to dividing the country on the basis of race.

What Labor failed to do was provide enough detail to the people of Australia on how the Voice would work, what power they would have, and who would hold that power.

Instead, they chose to spend hundreds of millions of dollars during a cost-of-living crisis and try to convince the public to vote on a vibe and guilt, telling us to vote yes because it was the right thing to do and if we didn’t, we were racist.

Moving forward, we need to work together. There needs to be an audit on the billions of dollars of taxpayer money that is spent on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that is currently not making it to the rural and regional communities who need it most.

We also need to get back to basics. The government needs to address the cost-of living crisis, the growing rate of crime, the poor road infrastructure in rural and regional areas like Dawson, and the crumbling healthcare system that North Queenslanders are currently suffering through.

As your Federal Member, I focus on the issues affecting all of the people of Dawson, and this week in Parliament I am loudly reminding the Prime Minister and his Labor Government to get back to basics and listen to the Australian people.

Ayr Chamber Of Commerce To Adopt New Name T he Ayr Chamber of Commerce held their AGM last Thursday, October 12, reflecting on the previous year and discussing changes to promote the Chamber’s profile in the future.

President Leigh Kefford was elected for a second term and, reflecting on his first term, said mistakes were made.

“The executive team has recognised that, and we’ve got the foundations now set ready to go into the future,” he said.

“Everyone’s happy, energetic, and in the next few years, the chamber will thrive.”

Linda Butler and Laurinda George were both re-elected in their respective positions of Vice President and Secretary, while Lisa Kefford was elected as the incoming Treasurer.

“Congratulations to the Chamber on a successful year and thank you for your promotion of the business community,” said Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin.

Mr Kefford hopes to double the membership by this time next year, with the discussion of a name change hoping to promote a more inclusive Chamber.

A motion to change the Ayr Chamber of Commerce Incorporated’s trading name to Burdekin Chamber was carried unanimously by the executive committee.

“It shows us as the chamber for the Bur-

dekin,” Mr Kefford said.

“Giru and Brandon don’t have a chamber at the moment, so we want to support the businesses in those areas as well.”

Mr Kefford said the Chamber has opted to omit the words ‘of Commerce’ from the name to appeal to a wider variety of not-for-profit organisations.

“Even though not-for-profits aren’t for commerce, they are wanting to be a part of the business community so it’s important for them to have membership as well,” he said.

The Benefits Of Biomass Pellets M

r Simon Yim, the Founder of SKY Renewables, has set his sight on utilizing local sugarcane waste as feedstock for renewable energy since his first trip to the Burdekin in 2018 and meeting with the leadership of Burdekin Renewable Fuels (BRF). As a visionary first mover, his plan was to process the fibre locally into biomass pellets for export to Japan.

Mr Yim also recognized very early on that biomass pellets are the only form of renewable fuel which is exportable and importable in its original form and economically across continents for years to come. And unlike the intermittent nature of wind and solar, biomass power is dispatchable baseload 24/7 renewable power.

cluding 42% of Australia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) and one-third of Australia’s coal. The Japanese Government encourages biomass power generation as baseload renewable power through offering high feed-in-tariffs in excess of Yen equivalent of $250 per MWh under 20 years of “takeor-pay” power purchase agreements with the generators.

Japan has no meaningful domestic biomass resources. Approximately 25% of global export of wood pellets of 21m tons in 2022 found its way to Japan. Japan also imports the same amount of palm kernel shell from Southeast Asia as biomass fuel, but that volume is going to shrink substantially when the sustainability requirement imposed by the Japanese Government coming into effect in April next year.

SKY Renewables approached the canegrowers from the demand side as early as 2019 by bringing the Japanese market here through written expressions of interests from Japanese end-users. This complements very well with BRF’s strategy.

Unfortunately, SKY Renewables’ pursuit was interrupted by Covid, just like everybody else. Japan and Australia have both committed to Net Zero in 2020 and 2022, respectively. However, with very limited renewable resources and a large reduction in nuclear generation, Japan has to keep relying on coal and natural gas for power generation. As a long-term mitigation measure, the Japanese Government requires all coal-fired units to co-fire coal with renewable fuel such as biomass pellets in order to reach its mandatory effi-

ciency standard of 43% by 2030. Together with co-firing demand, Japan will need more than 60m tons of biomass pellets by 2030. To address the huge supply shortfall, the Japanese Government has in April this year approved sugarcane waste as feedstock under the FIT scheme. Both Mr. Yim and BRF’s vision have proven correct.

The other black swan event was the war in Ukraine. Newcastle coal price reached a high-water mark of USD435 per ton in September 2022. Even though it has eased to the USD140-160 range in recent months, it is still a far cry from the ~USD70 per ton range just before the war.

When the price of coal and biomass pellets have substantially narrowed, using biomass pellets to substitute for coal is a no-brainer.

The Sustainability Of The Sugar Cane Industry B urdekin Renewable Fuels is a local company owned by sugarcane growers that was formed in 2017 to explore the development of new products and sources of revenue from sugarcane.

Burdekin Renewable Fuels Chair Greg Rossato said, “Sugar crystal continues to be an important product and source of cashflow for the industry, but we are totally reliant upon it which is pure risk and whilst the price is great at the moment, this may not always be the case and can change quickly. For this reason, it is vital that the industry looks towards developing alternative products and markets to diversify our business revenues and enhance our long-term sustainability.”

Burdekin Renewable Fuels is actively pursuing diversification opportunities and is involved in several innovative projects that will diversify and enhance the sustainability of the sugarcane industry.

These projects include the pelletisation of tops and trash for export to Japan to co-fire in coal-fired power stations and the development of a contaminant removal system to reduce contaminant levels in tops and trash to enable further processing.

Tops and trash has also been provided to

Licella as part of a feasibility study part funded by the Queensland Government’s Biofutures program and was successfully converted into a synthetic crude oil or “biocrude”. This biocrude was then upgraded to demonstrate that it was possible to manufacture a Sustainable Aviation Fuel from sugarcane residues. Further work is now being undertaken to have this pathway certified as a sustainable Jet Fuel.

Burdekin Renewable Fuels recently completed a techno-economic feasibility study funded by Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia, Burdekin Renewable Fuels shareholders and Sugar Research Australia investigating taking the whole crop to make bioglycols and sustainable aviation fuels.

At its helm are local couple, Seb and Laura Aguirre, who are celebrating their first official year in business this year, an achievement that is backed by six years of dedication that has seen them move from domestic bond cleaning to significant commercial projects.

Overcoming challenges, including Seb’s six-month battle with his health, the couple have raised their two teenage children and grown the business from a one-man enterprise to a flourishing company which now employs 14 contractors.

It was 2018 that Seb decided to start a cleaning service as a hobby and the couple remember when the operation used to include a pull along Henry vacuum cleaner with everything transported around in their Mazda CX9.

“We did our time doing bond cleans and residential work, working sometimes seven days a week and long hours every day,” explains Laura.

The hard work definitely paid off as the couple’s reputation for quality results spread near and far, soon big commercial partnerships were formed with Council and many other local businesses.

In 2020, the couple decided to restructure the business and became a trust.

Then, a year ago they secured a new premises, moving business operations out of the home office and into a large complex with room to grow.

Initially, they wanted to use the area for storage and lease the rest of the complex out to a third party, but they quickly real-

ised that the local market was calling for other services that they could offer.

“We were constantly being asked about our products,” said Laura.

“A lot of our products are natural, not chemical based, and they work really well.”

Determined to bring their own revolutionary products to the region, Seb and Laura took a trip down to Brisbane where they found a supplier was prepared to manufacture their own chemical under their own brand.

“This is where we created Solutions @ ELA, and everything kind of rolled on from there,” said Laura.

“When we unloaded all of our chemical from the delivery truck and put it on the shelf, seeing it with our own branded product label on it was a really big mo-

said Laura.

Eager to fill the gap in the market and offer customers one central place to find all cleaning products, the couple decided to use all the available space and opened a retail store on the site.

“All our staff clean to the same standard and we work in the business, so do our kids! It’s a real family effort and we wouldn’t have it any other way!”

“We sell Makita products – blowers and vacuums,” said Seb.

“We have been very lucky to have the support of our local community as well as the Burdekin Shire Council.

“People don’t need to go to different shops for all their cleaning supplies and equipment anymore, they can just come to us!”

“The support and encouragement as well as the introduction to the Smart Precinct has been invaluable.”

While operating a busy retail store and managing the overall operation of the business, Seb and Laura are still very much hands-on, overseeing the quality of each contract.

Recently the business has also diversified again, becoming the Mount Elliot water suppliers delivering everything from 600 ml bottles right through to 15 litres.

The Three Amigos Where Are They Now?

I

n the year 2000, three Kalamia Mill cane inspectors happened to retire from the sugar industry at the same time as each other, leaving a massive hole in their organisation.

Don King, Ray Saldumbide and Hockey Vernon, a trio who became known as the Three Amigos, stepped away after over 120 years collectively spent in the industry.

“We didn’t plan to all retire at the same time … it just sort of happened that way,” Hockey told the Ayr Advocate in the article ‘Three amigos call it a day!’ published on September 27, 2000.

Don started his career straight out of school, entering the industry in 1962 as a junior cane inspector while, a year earlier, Hockey got his start working on locomotives before joining Kalamia’s cane inspection department in 1970.

The three men witnessed change upon change in their time in the industry but say they had “the best days”.

Over 23 years later, the trio are still close mates, regularly catching up and reminiscing about the good old days.

“There was office work involved, but every day, we went out into the cane lands to see the farmers and contractors, see how things were operating out there and give them a bearing of what we were doing,” Ray said.

Don, Ray and Hockey all grew up in the area which they say gave them an innate interest and understanding of the sugar industry.

“We had some very good relationships with the growers and the contractors and even in the earlier days with the canecutters, which was really interesting.”

Ray started his career in the sugar industry back in 1955, when Kalamia was known as the Australian Estates Mill, starting as a ju-

“Before, you had the same contractors working five-day weeks and they had the weekends off when mills did their maintenance and everything.

“Now, they have a program to cut back on deliveries, but that’s part of the job; they take it as moving forward.”

The three of them agreed that, since they’ve retired, the industry is almost unrecognisable.

“Technology’s taken over – it’s a different world out there,” said Ray.

Ray also travelled overseas, particularly enjoying Scotland, Britain and the United States.

A cricket fanatic, he’ll never miss a test match when Australia plays in Brisbane.

Hockey remains a busy man, heavily involved in the Ayr Surf Lifesaving Club and his local church.

With 11 grandkids, he and his wife often travel to catch up with family, and they too have been overseas a few times.

“It’s all behind us now and all we can do is reminisce.”

They all enjoy retired life in the Burdekin where they can keep in touch with old mates.

Travel seemed to be a common activity for the three men post-retirement, as well as the occasional hit of golf.

“Being such a small town, there’s always a harvesting contractor or farmer who wants to know how we’re going,” said Hockey.

“Nothing too flash, but it was enjoyable,” laughed Don.

“We always keep in touch, too, us Three Amigos, we’ve been mates for a long time.

Don and his wife, who passed away a few years ago, loved to travel through different parts of Australia with a couple of trips abroad.

“We haven’t agreed on everything, but we always solve the problem.”

More Cattle On The “Moove” After Upgrade To Inland Rail Line M ore cattle will be transported along the Mount Isa line, with siding extension works at Maxwelton in Central North Queensland recently completed as part of a $4.26 million State Government investment.

Queensland Rail’s upgrade has extended the rail siding from 300 metres to approximately 1.4 kilometres in length, allowing more cattle to be transferred off trucks and onto full-length trains without interrupting the main rail line.

This has increased the capacity of the siding by almost five times its previous level, improving the efficiency of freight services in the region.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the new infrastructure will enable up to two cattle trains a week into the siding.

“It means it’s now much easier for the cattle industry to make the most of our rail network,” he said.

“To support other long-term freight opportunities, the upgraded loop will also enable the temporary storage of rolling stock at Maxwelton if required.

“This news comes off the back of our recent announcement that the nearby town of Julia Creek will also benefit from a $3 million investment upgrade to its cattle rail siding.”

Queensland Rail Head of Regional Scott Cornish added that construction crews did an outstanding job to complete this challenging task, working through prolonged wet weather to install new track and signalling infrastructure at Maxwelton.

“In collaboration with Richmond Shire Council, Queensland Rail has helped relo-

cate the cattle loading area approximately 600 metres east of the previous loading area,” he said.

“Our works have laid the groundwork for the establishment of new cattle yards which council will now focus on constructing.

“The full-length siding allows trains to stow and other traffic to pass, increasing the capacity of the rail line while also providing operational flexibility for other services in the area,” Mr Cornish added.

“This upgrade is a big win for freight operators and has helped secure the vital longevity of this line.”

Richmond Shire Council Mayor John Wharton added that with the construction of Grain handling facilities at Maxwelton and the expansion of farming in the region, it is very possible that in the very near future, grain could be loaded on a train at Maxwelton for the Townsville Port.

With Smart Planting W ith storm season approaching, Ergon Energy Network’s vegetation management crews have been out in droves, trimming branches away from powerlines to reduce the risk of outages and they are urging the community not to plant tall tree species near the electricity network.

Trees and branches contacting the power network can be one of the most common causes of outages during severe weather, according to Vegetation Management Officer Tim De Vries.

“Severe weather often brings with it high winds that not only snap branches from trees and fire them like missiles into the electricity network, it can also cause large trees to fall over powerlines,” Mr De Vries said.

“This is why our crews continue to prepare the network for storms by trimming branches, and in some cases removing trees altogether, because if they don’t highrisk vegetation could cause significant network damage and prolonged power outages.

“We also work closely with councils when

we carry out these tasks and only use very experienced vegetation management teams and qualified arborists when more intricate jobs are undertaken.”

Mr De Vries said the community can also greatly assist in preventing power outages by never planting tall plant species near or under the electricity network.

“Every year our crews have to attend power outages caused by a tall tree or fast-growing species such as bamboo that someone has planted too close to the network,” he said.

“These not only take out power during severe weather, they can also be a community danger if they bring down powerlines or a child climbs the tree and contacts the electricity network.

“Before people plant trees, we encourage them to take a look at our Plant Smart webpage which shows a wide range of safe species that won’t affect the electricity network and won’t require our crews to prune or remove them at a later date.”

The AgForce School to Industry Partnership Program had their schedule jam-packed this week on their ‘Ag Inspirations’ road trip.

Joining TNQ Drought Hub on a three-day adventure, the organisations travelled as far as Townsville and Bowen to offer Burdekin students an opportunity to see what their Agricultural industries have to offer.

Every Prep child is given the opportunity to a full developmental assessment and learning experiences to support each child’s strengths, including extension reading groups, fine motor therapy and language-rich tasks.

The school ranges from the Early Learning Centre right up to Year 12, with the Junior School being a special place for children to have the opportunity to learn in a safe and supported environment.

The outstanding teacher/student ratios allow students’ learning to be personalised.

With every child having a different learning style, Burdekin Christian College cater for students by using learning activities that incorporate a hands-on approach, visual stimuli and real life simulations.

Burdekin Christian College held their Early Childhood Athletics Carnival this past Friday morning, with the school’s littlest learners experiencing the fun of sport within a play-based environment, assisting them in growing confidence and resilience skills.

Day one began with a venture north to the Townsville plant of JBS Australia. The fascination began with students entering the world of meat processing. With over 440 staff, the plant offered an insight into the abundance of career opportunities, as well as an in-depth tour to give a behind-thescenes look into the array of career pathways.

The next stop for the group was the Port of Townsville, with a guided tour of the port, consisting of historical and statistical detail including details of roles with over one-hundred and sixty different positions.

Day two consisted of a journey south to the Bowen region, starting at North Queensland Fresh, where students were taught about ‘all things capsicums’. This packing facility provided knowledge on the process of farm-to-table and technological advancements.

Coral Coast Barramundi got the students who are keen fisherman excited, with brood ponds full of amazing fish varieties and hatching sheds to view the feeding and care practises.

The final day consisted of the process of prawn farming at Pacific Reef Fisheries, learning about the spawning cycle, pick and packing and everything in between.

Heading to Queensland’s largest family-owned sugarcane farm, Rocks Farming Company gave a tour of their 2,700-hectare enterprise and how they have developed through using technology advancements in their practices.

With 30 employees, students learnt and got to network with some of these industry professionals to see what a day in their life may look like, even getting a behind the scenes tour of their maintenance shed.

Home Hill State High School represented their school with respect and enthusiasm in their learning over the three-day period, returning to school with a newfound respect for the agricultural industry.

From Cane Fields To Turntables Ayr Doctor Takes On Dveight Has A Sound To Share With The World

n Ayr doctor has returned from the adventure of a lifetime, completing the Kokoda track in just seven days in September.

The opportunity arose for Dr Ian Condon of Ayr Health Service when he was invited by his brother, Luke, who is based in Papua New Guinea as part of Australian Defence’s Defence Cooperation Program.

f you haven’t seen him on the field for Burdekin Football Club in a while, it’s because he’s dropped the ball for the bass. Nic Predabon has recently been invited to DJ in Paris and Lyon, and we don’t mean cue a Spotify playlist. Since the age of 17, Nic has been creating mixtapes and music, all whilst traveling to some of Australia’s major cities to share what he’s created. When he’s not on stage and in control of the speakers, Nic works casually on a local cane farm with his parents.

Nic Predabon, who’s stage name is Dveight, has dreamt of playing overseas since the minute he was able to get his hands on a turntable panel. Paris and Leon are only a couple cities on the list of places Nic plans on performing in, in fact his main ambition is to secure a working visa for America to further his name and possibly land a permanent position in the spotlight.

Since 2020, Nic has gained an abundance of experience, accolades and attention within the industry as well as signing to a management label in December of 2020

just before his first show. When beginning his journey as a DJ, Nic jumped at any opportunity to showcase his talent and network with others in the industry including PhaseOne who is a big inspiration for Nic and was fortunate enough to cross paths with at a gig in Mackay.

Within three years Nic has racked up a following across a number of platforms; with 4,624 followers on Instagram and over ten thousand on SoundCloud. It is truly astounding the platform and name Nic has made for himself within an industry that was heavily impacted by COVID-19.

For those who share a similar passion, Nic’s one piece of advice is to “find your driving force to be in the industry and your own sound as an artist and a performer”.

In the next couple of months, Dveight will be perfecting his sound, packing his bags and heading over to Europe on the November 7, playing Lyon on the 10th, followed by Paris on the 11th. Follow @ Dveightmusic on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with his European adventures.

The trip was organised by the Australian Army and allowed Defence personnel to invite family and friends, forming a group of 18 to take on the challenge.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but just never thought I’d get the opportunity, so I couldn’t say no,” said Dr Condon.

Led by ex-army reservist and military historian David Howell, the group walked from the north of PNG to the south, starting from Kokoda and finishing at Owers Corner.

“We walked all the way up to Mount Bellamy, so the first three days is up, and the last four days is down,” Dr Condon said.

“We did it in the dry season and they say in the dry season it rains every day and in the wet season it rains all day, every day, so we still got wet every day, but we had moments of sunshine.”

Dr Condon was deemed the unofficial team medic, although fortunately his skills weren’t required.

“As a doctor, I saw many disparities in the medical services and the lack of healthcare along the track,” he said.

“In regional PNG, it’s pretty much non-ex-

istent.

“It’s inspired me to get involved a bit more with medical donations and helping out overseas for people in need.

“I think we take a lot of things for granted in Australia and we probably overcomplicate things, so I learnt to really enjoy the simplicity of walking, drinking, having a dry roof over my head and making mates along the way.”

The trip fit into Dr Condon’s training schedule perfectly as he had completed the Townsville marathon less than two months prior.

“It’s definitely inspired me to do some more adventure-type stuff,” he said.

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I’ll definitely remember it for the rest of my life.”

Meanwhile, in the early days of junior football, clubs were formed by local schools for players in U8 to U16 age groups, including Comets from Brandon, Centrals from Ayr, AK United from Airdmillan and Kalamia, Rangers from Home Hill and Easts United from East Ayr. Both junior and senior competitions were played at fields on MacMillan Street behind the Ayr Pool, where junior games were played as curtain raisers to the senior matches. In 1974, the Burdekin Football Senior competition was relocated to its current home at International Park on Beach Road.

ootball’s roots in the Burdekin region trace back to the early 1900s when passionate individuals would engage in informal matches in Ayr and Home Hill. Most of these early players were migrants hailing from countries such as Scotland, Ireland, England, and various parts of Europe. In those days, there was no structured club or competition – the focus was on fostering camaraderie and shared love for the beautiful game.

The early 1970s witnessed the emergence of a more organized senior soccer competition as a group of men from Ayr began to lay the foundations for formal gameplay.

Sunday afternoons became synonymous with thrilling matches. Over the years, teams would ebb and flow, with typically four teams participating at any given time.

In 1971, the North Queensland Soccer Federation (NQSF), based in Townsville, extended an invitation to Ayr players to compete in their first division, filling in to play teams on their bye weeks. Ayr embraced this opportunity, leading to periodic journeys to Townsville for matches and reciprocal visits from Townsville teams.

Although many players were content with this arrangement, some aspired to compete more regularly in the more elite NQSF competition.

During the 1972 season, the idea of joining the NQSF officially took root. By 1973, the Ayr Senior Soccer Association played its inaugural season, eventually evolving into the Burdekin Soccer Club in 1987, now fondly known as Burdekin FC.

With an increase in the number of children enrolled in the local small schools, these schools joined forces to form Crusaders. By the 1980s there were four clubs in the local competition; Home Hill Rangers, Easts United, Saint Francis Saints and

Crusaders, later joined by the Bowen Football Association. In 2010, Burdekin Junior Football also relocated to Beach Road.

It was decided that in 2016 the existing juniors’ clubs would unite and the Burdekin Junior Soccer body would run the competition, providing a local non-competitive fixture for U5-U12 and the U12-U16 players playing in the FQ Northern Football Competition in Townsville. The Senior players also compete in the FQ Northern Competition in Premier League Men, Reserve Men, 1st Division Men, 2nd Division Men, Premier League Women and Reserve Women divisions, playing in both Townsville and at home. In 2021, the senior and junior football bodies amalgamated to form Burdekin FC, providing new opportunities for the club and its members while maintaining club values and culture.

NAME: Kate Southern (Castelanelli) YEARS WITH BURDEKIN FC: 2002 – present POSITION: Centre Midfield

ince starting football at the age of five and joining the Burdekin FC Senior Women’s team at the age of 14, Kate Southern has gone on to become an absolute club stalwart.

She felt her pride for the Panthers when she joined Burdekin FC’s 50 Year Gala Ball organising committee, which allowed her to reflect on her last 20 years with the club.

“I felt very privileged to be a part of that committee,” Kate said.

“In the years that I played, we had quite a strong team and won quite a few premierships,” she said.

“It was nice to relive those memories as we were organising the event.”

“They were some of the best years of my life.

Kate’s football career started young and saw her move to Brisbane to pursue a scholarship with the Queensland Academy of Sport at age 17.

“Most of my weekends were spent at soccer so besides playing the game there was such good camaraderie off the field.

She played in Queensland representative teams for four years and was even selected in the U19 Matildas Development Squad ahead of the U19 Women’s World Championship in 2004, but a viral infection meant she was unable to travel to Thailand for the tournament.

Kate returned Burdekin FC where she’s since won six premierships.

“Some of the players I played with will be lifelong friends.”

Kate joined these lifelong friends on Saturday night not only as a member of the organising committee, but also as a guest speaker reflecting on the last decade of the club’s history alongside Angelo Licciardello, Lyndsay Gabiola and Maddison Dal Santo.

NAME: Catherine West (Roncato) YEARS WITH BURDEKIN FC: 1993 – 2019 POSITION: Centre Midfield

t’s a career that began in the Burdekin, led to captaining Australia, and resulted in legendary status in north Queensland football, but Catherine West will never forget her roots.

Catherine embarked on her football journey at a time that she says was a rocky one for the women’s team at Burdekin FC, but it didn’t stop her from going on to join the U16 North Queensland women’s team in 1992 before representing Australia in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

“Nothing ever beats playing for Burdekin,” she said.

In 1995, she even captained the Junior Matildas side to a three-nil victory against New Zealand in a test match while on tour.

They are all fond memories, but Catherine holds her time in the Burdekin dearest.

It was a time of hard work and rebuilding, but she said the players around her made the journey worthwhile.

“We’d gone through a period where other teams had dominated the competition,” Catherine said.

“We were bottom of the ladder for a long, long time.”

“There’s something great about playing club football.

“You’ll maintain those memories forever because it’s something that you work for the whole year round.”

As her career progressed into coaching the beautiful game, Catherine’s piece of advice to young players is a simple message: “Remember to have fun and don’t get caught up in the pressure of what jersey you’re wearing but focus on what you love doing and that’s playing the game.”

It wasn’t until 2006 that she won her first grand final with the club, and it remains one of her most cherished memories.

Catherine returned to the Burdekin for Burdekin FC’s 50 year celebrations where she and fellow guest speaker Felix Gabiola guided the audience through the 19932002 era of the club.

Catherine went on to play for and coach multiple clubs in Townsville but will never forget her roots.

“You can take the girl out of the Burdekin, but you can’t take the Burdekin out of the girl,” she said.

“That’s something I genuinely believe in.”

NAME: Louis Zabala YEARS WITH BURDEKIN FC: 2006 – 2012 POSITION: Midfielder

A

ll Louis Zabala ever wanted to do was play football.

With older brothers who loved the game just as much as he did, his childhood was spent playing in the backyard, going to football training or at the junior fields on a Saturday, waiting around all day to see if another side was short of players so he could fill in for another game.

He started with Burdekin FC at the age of five, developing his skills and fostering his passion for the game before playing in Townsville from age 11.

“That’s where I started playing and that’s where I found my love for the game,” Louis said.

“As a young kid, I loved it, it used to be the highlight of my week.

“It was all I ever wanted to do.”

After a few years playing in Townsville, Louis moved to Sydney at the age of 15 to follow his dreams of playing professional football and upon finishing school, took the next step to Spain.

Louis’ European football journey was never fully realised, however, as after a year of playing in Spain, a global pandemic hit, sending him back to the Burdekin without a clear path forward.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it allowed Louis to reunite with his roots and play seniors with the Panthers.

“When you’re a kid, from the country especially, it’s tough to make it professionally, but that’s all I ever wanted to do,” he said.

He played for and even captained the Youth team, leading them to achieve their greatest result in NPL by making the semi-finals for the first time in the team’s history.

“I’m grateful for my parents, they gave me a lot of opportunity, so I never missed out.

A string of stellar performances led to training sessions with the first team with whom he now plays for professionally, having made several FFA cup and A-League appearances.

“It’s all I ever wanted to do, it’s all I really knew, and I’m very fortunate that I get to play football as my job now.”

State Gold For Give Pickleball Wildcats Boys A Go PICKLEBALL

P

ickleball is game a bit like tennis but played on a small court with a lightweight paddle and light whiffle ball.

The serve is underarm, and points are won on the serve.

Games are first to eleven points and typically take between 10 and 20 minutes.

Because it is played on a small court there are lots of opportunities to socialize.

Pickleball has become very popular throughout Australia with all age groups, but especially the over 55s.

season that started with inexperience finished with a state championship for the Burdekin Wildcats under 12 boys squad.

Head Coach Lauren Roncato shared her pride with the team, saying the boys had come a long way throughout the season.

“The boys began the season very raw and inexperienced,” she said.

“Out of the 10 players we had, only three had had previous rep experience.”

The team competed in three North Queensland Junior Basketball Competition carnivals throughout the year, travelling to Townsville, Cairns, and Mackay to compete and finishing in an impressive third place.

The team then travelled to Brisbane to compete at the Basketball Queensland State Championships from September 23 to 26, entering the under 12 competition in division 4.

An undefeated run in the pool matches saw the Wildcats enter finals with con-

fidence, coming up against South West Metro Pirates Red for a place in the grand final.

After defeating the Pirates 68-56, it was Burdekin versus Ipswich Force 2 in the ultimate decider, with the Wildcats winning 61-54.

“The boys showed typical Burdekin grit and determination to win this close game,” Ms Roncato said.

“As head coach, I was very proud of the boys for their commitment to training each week, as well as their support for one another throughout the entire competition.

“It really makes it all worthwhile to see where they start the season to where they finish it, and the vast improvements shown by each player.

The reason for this is simple: it is easy to learn to play, is low impact and is easy on the body.

It focuses on reflexes rather than power and running speed.

Pickleball is played at Home Hill Tennis every Tuesday 7 – 8:15 pm.

The first week you try is free and after this the weekly cost is $10 which includes court fees, membership, equipment use and a tea or coffee and a sweet.

“New players are always welcome, and we will teach you the rules and how to score,” said club representative Kate Casswell.

hursday, October 12 saw 16 keen bowlers turn up to play the first game on the brand-new rink at Home Hill Community Sports Club.

It was tricky getting used to the slowness of the carpet with almost no bias.

Three rinks were used for two games of triples and one game of pairs.

Rink 4 saw Karl, Ferg, and Glen defeat Dino, John, and Dave 15-13.

On Rink 5, Bob, Happy and Stephen defeated Paul, Joe, and Trevor 22-14.

On Thursday, October 26, Burdekin Motors will sponsor the day with $300 prize money up for grabs.

Ms Roncato’s post-season message to the boys is a simple one.

Rink 6 was the pairs game where Jim and Alex went down to Judy and Mick 18-27.

Ring the club before 1pm to register for a 1:30 start.

“Just keep working hard on the fundamentals and enjoy playing with mates,” she said.

The mystery rink winners for the day were Mick McCloskey and Judy Elton and the raffle was won by Ron Smith.

enior cricket returned to Barry Richards Field over the weekend, with most players backing up from a thrilling Town of Origin showdown between Ayr and Home Hill the weekend before.

Round one of the Home Hill Cricket Association Saturday Senior competition pitted Peto’s Marine against Guardian Pharmacy, with Peto’s Marine winning the toss and electing to bat.

Wickets to Aaron Elphinstone (2) and Christopher Penna saw Guardian Pharmacy chase down the total after losing three wickets.

Peto’s Marine will back it up again this week, taking on Crowned Mongrels on Saturday afternoon, while a combined U17 Home Hill and Charters Towers team will take on Townsville Wests earlier that afternoon.

Opener Simon Vickers got the innings underway with a solid 34 runs off 35 balls, building a dangerous looking partnership with number three batsman Daniel Olditch who finished with 23 runs from 20 balls.

The middle order got Peto’s Marine to a defendable 175 total from their 25 overs, thanks to 39 runs off 27 balls from Greg Flanagan and 24 runs off 30 balls from Leon Franklin.

Wickets to Jd Wilkins (2), Andrew Wallwork, Kenneth Southwell, Jamie Grabs, Isaac Cardillo and Lee Watts saw Peto’s Marine finish at 7/175.

Lee Watts and Isaac Cardillo got the chase underway for Guardian Pharmacy, with an unfortunate run out at the non-striker’s end bringing Lee’s innings to an end on 13 from 21 balls.

Andrew Wallwork came in at number three, stabling the ship with an unbeaten 51 off 40, with Jd Wilkins scoring 26 from 31 at number four.

With Andrew retiring not out, big hitters Kenneth Southwell and Andrew Cardillo combined with a respective 32 not out from 26 and 15 from 12 to finish off Guardian Pharmacy’s run chase with a couple of overs to spare.

he Junior Cricket season kicked off on Friday, October 6 at the Nutrien Ag Solutions Cricket Complex in Home Hill with a good turn out of eager children itching to emulate their heroes with the bat and ball. There were some great skills on show for so early in the season thanks to the amount of cricket some of them have played recently at the Country Cup in Charters Towers. Some standouts with the bat were Michael Finn 14 runs, Oscar Mahoney 13 runs and Marshall Parker with 12 runs, all not out.

Marshall and Oscar took a wicket each when bowling as did Henri Klopper, but Nate Elphinstone stole the show with amazing figures of 3 wickets for only 2

runs off 2 overs. All the players had big smiles on their faces even if they didn’t score runs or take any wickets so it is certain that everyone had a good time.

Tuesday, October 10 was the start of the Rookies Blaster program (5-7yo) at East Ayr State School and last Friday saw the Challenger Blasters (7-10yo) start at the club in Home Hill.

A combined Home Hill/Charters Towers Under 17 team played Brothers last Saturday in Charters Towers and was unfortunately beaten soundly by the Townsville team. Thomas Cardillo was Home Hill’s top scorer with 27 runs, Corey Heidke took 2 wickets and Leo Olditch snared 1.

aces returned to Home Hill last week following the announcement of three additional TAB meets being held at Burdekin Race Club for the year.

Horses, jockeys, trainers and owners from Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, and Atherton attended the meet on Thursday, October 12 with seven local horses also racing.

Local horses Old School, trained by Burdekin Race Club President Ricky Gudge, and Private Cheetah, trained by Darby Amos, both won their races.

“The racing was great,” said Mr Gudge.

“There were no major issues, everybody came home safe, and it turned out to be a ripper of a day’s racing.”
