esidents of Home Hill now have a new female doctor available for appointments thanks to the incoming Dr Pavani Ganapathi who has just joined the team of five other doctors at Home Hill Doctors Surgery. Another female doctor in town retired several months ago and many residents are relieved this essential role has now been filled.

It has been a long journey for Dr Pavani and her husband Dr Sarat Tata who have been waiting for the day they can work alongside each other in the surgery they own. And while Dr Pavani is a familiar face to many, today is the first official day of duties for the young and inspiring local GP.

Sit Down With Sam Who’s keen for Harvest Festival?

It’s been on my radar since moving to Home Hill, so I sure am.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a street parade; I was lucky enough to get a quick sneak peak at some of the floats this week and they look terrific, so I know it’s going to be a great spectacle.

Growing up on the Darling Downs, I have fond memories of street parades, rides, concerts and gardens at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

Visiting my grandparents in Chinchilla for the Melon Festival was always a good time.

Plus, although there was no parade involved, my hometown of Millmerran throws a

great Camp Oven Festival every two years – if you’re down there in October 2024, check it out!

These festivals, carnivals and celebrations encapsulate the spirit and identity of the communities that host them.

So much hard work and so many volunteer hours go into providing exceptional experiences for us attendees, so it’s important to support these events and the businesses that sponsor them.

With the Gala Ball on Friday night and the Grand Parade and Street Party on Saturday afternoon, I’m excited to see what the Home Hill Harvest Festival has in store for 2023!

urdekin Neighbourhood Centre (BNC) has done what it does best, and that’s bringing people together.

A familiar face at BNC, Malcolm has been coming into the Centre for quite a while where he utilises the services of the CPL team based in the Centre.

Malcolm will always make a point of coming in and chatting to the rest of the BNC staff and, in doing so, gets an insight into the other activities and services in the Centre.

Recently, Malcolm expressed his desire to have a special rug created by the talented members of the BNC Crochet Group.

Michelle, a dedicated member

of the group, immediately volunteered to take on the project.

Michelle decided not only to create the rug but to donate it to Malcolm as a token of her appreciation for his support and presence in the community.

Malcolm returned to the Centre to pass on a thank you to Michelle on a Monday, which happens to be Crochet Afternoon, creating a serendipitous opportunity for him to meet Michelle in person and express his gratitude.

The community members coming together to support one another exemplifies the true spirit of unity and generosity that the Centre fosters.

FERAL DEER CAUSING PROBLEMS On Rita Island Farm

O

n Ken Duncan’s Rita Island farm, hoof marks, pierced plastic mulch and half eaten fruit show signs of unwelcome night-time activity.

Feral deer have long been a problem on the island, but Mr Duncan and his neighbours say the problem is getting worse.

“They’ve been here since I’ve been here, and I’ve always worked with it,” Mr Duncan said.

“This year has just blindsided me; it hasn’t been good at all.”

Mr Duncan has been growing watermelons and pumpkins on the 160-acre property for the last eight years.

He estimates that this year alone, feral deer have caused a minimum of $100,000 worth of damage to his product and infrastructure.

“Because we’re watering the ground, it’s soft on the plastic mulch so when they run, their hooves pierce the plastic and nick the tubing underneath,” Mr Duncan said.

“When we go to water, it’s like a sprinkler, so you lose water efficiency, you lose the ability to distribute the fertiliser to the watermelons.

“Then there’s the eating of the fruit and the squashing of the vine, of course.”

Prime breeding conditions have seen a spike in deer numbers on the island, although the dry weather is driving them to feed on fruit and cane crops.

“Now it’s dry, there’s not enough food to keep them going,” Mr Duncan said.

“They’re getting thinner and thinner, so I feel sorry for the deer.”

While the deer pose one problem to the farmer, they also attract even more unwelcome night-time activity: amateur hunters.

Mr Duncan avoids shooting on his farm due to the proximity of neighbouring houses which have had bullets strike pool fences and kitchen cupboards.

“People come on uninvited and the paddock is surrounded by houses, and they’re all scared, because there’s shooting all

night long,” he said.

“I’ve got workers who spray at night-time and sometimes we change irrigation at night-time, so how long until they get hit?”

Mr Duncan and his workers have started conducting nightly patrols of the farm to ward off unwelcome pests and hunters.

He has also installed a gas gun and laser which repel the deer unharmed, and he plans to install fencing around the entire property.

“The last thing I feel like doing is a 1:00am patrol but I do, because this is our farm and we have to protect our crops,” he said.

The Burdekin Shire Council has unveiled a comprehensive Feral Deer Management Plan in response to the recent launch of the Queensland Feral Deer Management Strategy (2022-2027) and the National Fe-

ral Deer Action Plan (2023-2028) by the Australian Government.

“The Feral Deer Management Plan reflects Council’s commitment to protect the region’s assets and mitigate the damage caused by these invasive animals,” Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughin said.

“The plan, aligned with both strategies, addresses the expanding deer populations in the Burdekin Shire and neighbouring areas and will aid in reducing the impact of feral deer on the environment, agriculture and communities.”

State Government Free Waste Disposal Backs Ayr Water This Clean Up November Treatment Plant

A

$46.88 million package has been announced by the Queensland Government to support the Burdekin Shire Council for Stage 1 of a new Water Treatment Plant in Ayr. The funding package also provides support for costs associated with refurbishing South Ayr bores to supplement current drinking water supplies and is part of an ongoing management plan following detections of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in the groundwater.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin thanked the State Government for their support in providing essential infrastructure to the Burdekin community.

“Council is delighted and welcomes the State Government’s announcement of financial support to deliver Stage 1 of a new water treatment plant,” Ms McLaughlin said.

“This project will ensure a safe, reliable source of drinking water for residents in the Ayr, Brandon and Alva communities.”

Stage 1 of the new water treatment plant includes iron and manganese pre-treatment, dual media filtration (coal on sand), disinfection, solids handling, chemical storage and dosing.

Construction of the water treatment plant is set to begin later this year and be commissioned and supplying drinking water

by 2026.

Additional funding for ongoing technical support and groundwater monitoring and modelling of the Ayr aquifer will also be provided.

“The Palaszczuk Labor Government is supporting the Burdekin Shire Council in the delivery of safe and reliable drinking water to the community now and into the future,” said Minister for Water Glenn Butcher.

“Everyone knows the Burdekin is built on liquid gold, and this investment sets the community and council on a path for safe, clean and healthy water for decades to come.”

Burdekin Shire Council took immediate action to establish new bores for the town’s water supply when PFAS was first detected in the local groundwater in 2018.

The Queensland Government previously provided $12 million funding to Burdekin Shire Council for water supply infrastructure upgrades to support safe and reliable drinking water.

Completed in 2022, these works included a 10 megalitre South Ayr Reservoir, installation of new bores and associated pumps, chlorination and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection equipment and connecting water mains, and the design of the South Ayr Water Treatment Plant.

urdekin residents are being urged to seize the opportunity of cost-effective waste disposal year-round with the launch of Clean Up November thanks to Burdekin Shire Council.

The ‘Clean Up November’ initiative coincides with preparations for the 2023/24 disaster season, underlining the importance of residents clearing their yards of debris ahead of any impending storms or cyclones.

Sunday, December 3 will see a temporary waiver of waste charges, while the regular rules and operations at the Clare Transfer Station will remain unchanged for the day.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin called upon all residents to contribute to the community’s safety and readiness, emphasising the significance of preparedness during the disaster season.

“While we introduce Clean Up November in anticipation of the cyclone season, it’s important for residents to remember that trips to Burdekin’s Transfer Stations and Landfill are cost-free every day for sorted domestic waste,” said Ms McLaughlin.

“Presently, there is no charge for disposing of domestic waste items such as oil, fire extinguishers, white goods, scrap metal, E-waste, fluoro tubes, flares, gas bottles, EPIRBs, cardboard and green waste, provided they are properly sorted.

“Only specific items like tyres will incur a limited per load and disposal fee.

“I want to encourage everyone to play their part in ensuring that their yards are clear of debris, fixtures are securely fastened, and gutters are free from obstructions before the onset of storms.

“Extend a helping hand to elderly neighbours, family members and friends who may require assistance with transporting their waste.”

Residents are reminded to securely cover their loads when transporting waste and it is important to note that green waste, recyclables, scrap metal, tyres, and concrete must be separated before disposal.

Hazardous waste items such as paints, solvents, chemical waste and contaminated soil cannot be accepted at Council Landfill or Transfer Stations.

Standard disposal charges will apply to commercial waste, truckloads and domestic asbestos disposal.

Relaxed charges for waste disposal at the Transfer Stations and Kirknie Road Landfill will be in effect on Sunday, December 3 2023.

Home Hill Sub Branch A Beacon of Support RSL To Pause And Remember In The Battle Against Cancer This Saturday

hirley Gilmore is a dedicated and compassionate individual who has been a pillar of strength for countless women facing the daunting diagnosis of cancer.

With roles at both the Queensland Cancer Council and the Breast Cancer Network in Melbourne, she has made it her life’s mission to provide unwavering support to those in need.

Shirley’s cancer support roles follow a career in healthcare and her own breast cancer diagnosis in 1990.

Shirley travelled to Brisbane for treatment, and the support she received from her family and healthcare staff inspired her to extend the same lifeline to others.

“The particular challenges facing rural women in this situation at the time involved lack of information and support,” she said.

ince its inception in 1917, the RSL Home Hill Sub Branch has been an integral part of the town’s ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services while providing assistance and social connection to local ex-service men and women.

In 1994, fit, healthy and back at work, Shirley began her formal commitment to the Queensland Cancer Fund by signing up as an entrant in the Nurse of the Year quest, raising almost $30,000.

“The important thing was that I then had the resources available to hand out to other women,” she said.

In 1995, Queensland Cancer Fund and the community health nurse assisted her to set up a Breast Cancer Support Group, who still meet monthly to this day.

Over the years, Shirley continued to raise funds, again committing to Nurse of the Year in 2002 and later, she became involved in the Breast Cancer Network.

Every month, Shirley and her fellow survivors meet at the Gudjuda Deck Café, creating a sense of companionship and shared experience.

“You meet such wonderful women on that journey; there’s a lot of good people out there,” she said.

“There are a couple of people there who have recently been diagnosed, there are a couple of survivors who have been coming for 25 years.

“There are so many more women diagnosed with breast cancer now but there’s such a big survival rate and that’s all we’ve got to focus on.”

The Breast Cancer Support Group will hold a Christmas breakup at the Gudjuda Deck Café on Thursday, November 30 from 10:00am.

The Sub Branch has had its ups and downs throughout its 106 year history but regular meetings, held on the first Monday of the month at the Crown Hotel from 10:15am, have kept current members and the community engaged.

“Monthly meetings have only recently started which is good because you get other community people here to discuss issues,” said Secretary Allan Petersen.

“We try to do all of our commemorative services the best we can, and I think we do a pretty good job considering we’ve only got a very small number of workers.”

The RSL Home Hill Sub Branch is hosting its Remembrance Day Service this Saturday, November 11 at Burdekin Memorial Hall from 10:30am.

“It’s an opportunity to reflect on World Wars I and II and what the diggers sacrificed for our country’s way of life today,” said President Richard Kelly.

“Everyone should think about the old diggers, especially from here, there was a lot of people from this area who couldn’t get in quick enough to sign up.”

“We get out amongst the people and the school kids, and they really enjoy themselves,” said Mr Kelly.

The Sub Branch is dedicated to the support and welfare of local veterans and families and is always looking for new members.

group of up to 25 young people meet at the Burdekin Shire Council Chambers every month to collaborate with Council, provide feedback and discuss opportunities for the youth of the Burdekin.

The Burdekin Shire Youth Council is an initiative inviting young people aged 12 to 21 to immerse themselves in the community.

Meetings are held monthly, and members can be seen volunteering at events throughout the community, including the recent Seniors Luncheon and Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival.

Burdekin Shire Youth Council Mayor Zavier Wood has been involved in Youth Council for six years.

As he approaches the end of year 12 at Ayr State High School, he reflected on his journey that started with an invitation to join Youth Council.

“I wanted to give back to my community and I knew this was one way of doing so,” Zavier said.

“In 1994, the Youth Council was developed to allow youth a voice into Council,” said Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin.

“Council was looking at ways to provide entertainment for teenagers and youth that were not old enough for licensed venues but still wanted to experience the atmosphere.

“It’s truly remarkable to see the Burdekin Shire Youth Council thriving 30 years later as we prepare to celebrate this significant anniversary next year.

Expressions Of Interest Now Open For I Expansion

N

on-binding expressions of interest for land in the Ayr Industrial Estate expansion project were officially launched at the Burdekin Industry Breakfast on Wednesday, November 8, where Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin and Cadet Engineer/Project Manager Coralie Mannea shared the latest developments and future plans for the project.

Ms McLaughlin said the project will support the growth and diversification of the local economy and was a long-term vision of Council that had finally come to fruition after allocating funding in the 2023-24 Budget.

“This is a game-changing project for our region that will create more jobs, investment and opportunities for our local businesses and industries,” she said.

“We have already received a lot of interest from potential buyers and we are now inviting anyone who is interested in securing land in this strategic location to submit their non-binding expression of interest.”

The Ayr Industrial Estate expansion

project will deliver approximately 40 new industrial lots through a staged release, with new roads, drainage, water, sewerage, nbn connectivity and underground power infrastructure.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 and will complement the existing Ayr Industrial Estate, which is home to more than 30 businesses employing over 200 people.

“The location of the estate expansion is ideal with advantages including Bruce Highway frontage, well located with access to rail, road and port, centrally located between Townsville and Bowen, wide roads, underground power, NBN connectivity, flexible lot sizes with the ability to tender for multiple blocks and an affordable pricing model,” Ms Mclaughlin said.

“In accordance with the Local Government Act and Regulations, Council is required to sell the lots via an auction or tender process.

“It is anticipated that Council will release tenders for stage 1 in mid-2024.

“Once the tenders close, Council will

review tenders received and advise those that are successful.

“Contracts will then be prepared.

“Any lots that are not sold during this tender process will be listed publicly for sale.

“We are proud of our region’s diverse and resilient economy and we want to ensure that we have the right infrastructure and land supply to support its future growth and development.

Ms McLaughlin said the project was part of Council’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and prosperous Burdekin.

“We look forward to working with the interested parties and delivering this exciting project for our community.”

At 1.55am on Sunday 29 October, Ayr Police were called to a disturbance at a licenced premises in Queen Street, Ayr. As a result, a 41yr old Burdekin man was charged with two counts of common assault whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and one count each of failing to leave a licenced premises and creating a disturbance on a licenced premises. He is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 28 November. He was also issued with a Police Banning Notice from licenced premises in Ayr. At about 2.40pm on Tuesday 31 October, Ayr Police received a complaint

from a local supermarket regarding the theft of grocery items from that store.

A short time later Ayr Police located a 20yr old Burdekin woman who was subsequently charged with three counts of stealing. She was released on conditional bail to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 28 November.

At 11.20am on Wednesday 1 November, Ayr Highway Patrol Police intercepted a vehicle on Bruce Highway, Brandon.

The driver, a 28yr old Burdekin man, was issued a NTA driving with a relevant drug in his saliva and is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 19 December.

At 11.30pm on Wednesday 1 November, Ayr Police intercepted a vehicle on Wickham Street, Ayr. The driver, a 52yr old Burdekin man, was issued a NTA for disqualified driving and is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 28 November.

ne unfortunate boatie on Groper Creek has come home from a day of fishing following a bingle with a large crocodile.

Reporting that the large croc had repeatedly attacked his boat on Wednesday November 1, while he was fishing on Groper Creek close to Pensioners Bend.

The Queensland Government’s Crocwise resource says that when fishing, camping, or boating near any body of water in the region, it is always best to act as if there is a crocodile near.

Crocodiles can be found in fresh and salt waters, including rivers, creeks, swamps, lagoons, beaches, oceans, and waterholes.

To reduce risk of attracting a crocodile, it is best to remain at least five metres from the waters edge. Crocodiles are apex predators that use ambush techniques to catch their prey, and often hunt in the groves of waters edge.

Be sure to dispose of food waste and scraps in a bin or take it home with you, as crocs are attracted by the promise of an easy

Keep pets on leads and away from water, as they are very attractive prey for crocs.

Shitbox Rally Couple Return

From Adventure Of A Lifetime

ith endless stories to tell and a new appreciation for adventure, Brad and Kerry Gardner have returned from the trip of a lifetime after taking on the Spring 2023 Shitbox Rally.

The Giru couple embarked on the adventure last month, joining a convoy of 250 ‘shitboxes’ travelling from Port Douglas to Adelaide, all while raising money for the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Brad and Kerry, also known as their team name ‘Gunn Ado’s’, arrived in Port Douglas on Friday, October 13 to assemble with the rest of the group and get briefed on the trip.

It was here they met their Brad and Kerry Gardner dressed in honour of their friend Gary Corradi buddy group, made up who passed away from cancer a decade ago. Community Feedback For The Future Of TAFE

chool leavers, local businesses and representative groups are being encouraged to help frame the future of TAFE by joining the conversation and being vocal about their needs and wants.

Local Member for Burdekin, Dale Last MP, is calling on these groups to make a stand and get involved so the direction of TAFE reflects local needs rather than those of Brisbane-based decision-makers.

Mr Last says he is concerned young people are choosing to leave the region for study opportunities when they could be receiving them here.

He believes that if more relevant courses were held at the local TAFE more skilled youth would remain in the area.

“When I speak to high school students the vast majority of them tell me they intend to leave the district when they graduate,” Mr Last said.

“Some want to attend university or just spread their wings but there is also a group that leave to pursue training that could be offered here in the Burdekin.”

“In the last few years, we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of unfilled positions in crucial industries. If we don’t take action to improve local training opportunities, that situation is only going to get

Disappointed that more local consultation on the matter wasn’t offered by the state government, Mr Last is now appealing for people to come forward with ideas and suggestions, so the community doesn’t miss out.

“My message to local businesses and representative groups is that, if they have identified an area where the current training is inadequate, this is their chance to raise those issues. And for former students, I would ask that they have their say because their experiences allow us to improve what is on offer now and what will be on offer in the future.”

PROJECT FLAME IN THE BURDEKIN Simon YIm

KY Renewables started stage 1 development work of Project Flame in April 2023, after securing investment from a major Japanese industrial conglomerate who would like to invest in the project and off-take all its pellet production for co-firing its coal-boilers in Japan.

It is imperative that the project has to be creditworthy and bankable in order to secure project finance on a non-recourse basis; meaning lenders have to base their credit decision on the cashflow and merits of the project. On this basis, the SKY Renewables team went to work to secure non-binding intentions from growers to supply their tops-and-trash, proposals from top pelleting equipment suppliers globally and leading local engineering firms with good track records for the

equipment procurement and engineering work, securing a site, start work on securing the environmental and development authorizations necessary for construction, continuous testing of raw materials and washing techniques, formulating and executing on an indigenous engagement strategy, as well as commencing conversations with potential lenders.

SKY Renewables has achieved an important milestone last week by achieving very good results in an industrial scale testing of tops-and-trash in KAHL’s pilot plant in Hamburg, Germany. KAHL is a global leader in manufacturing of pelleting plants and a potential supplier to our project.

Being a global first in utilizing tops-andtrash for pelleting, SKY Renewables faces formidable challenges. A key one is to

ensure that tops-and-trash can actually be pelletized from a technical and commercial perspective due to its nature as an agricultural waste. The world has used wood pellets for a long time. Agricultural waste is less straightforward because of its higher ash and silica content, as well as the presence of alkali metals coming from the soil.

The encouraging test results is a conclusive proof of concept. The SKY Renewables team will continue to work on improving the quality of the pellets to meet the needs of our potential customers both for biomass power generation and co-firing with coal, as well as initiating certification of pellets made from sugarcane tops-andtrash in key markets.

tinue its work. Another key part of stage 1 development work is land and port logistics. The project involves moving of a vast number of bales from our supplier locations to the pelleting plant, as well as moving finished pellets to the Port of Townsville for storage and loading. To ensure seamless operation, the pellet plant has to be designed in such a way that there will be multiple de-baling and washing lines before feeding washed tops-and-trash through the pelletizing processes. The finished pellets are being shipped to Japan by 25,000 to 30,000 ton vessels, which means similar volume of pellets have to be stored at the Port for quick loading. There is on-going discussion with the Port. Stage 1 development work is on track to be completed before the end of the year.

New Doctor Welcomed To Home Hill M

edical services in Home Hill have just expanded significantly with Dr Pavani Ganapathi becoming another female practitioner in town to be able to cater to female health issues. She joins her husband, Dr Sarat Tata, in the Home Hill Surgery after several years of dedicated study which has seen her specialise in women’s and children’s health.

The couple bought the practice in 2014, but for the past 10 years Dr Sarat has been working as a GP, alongside other doctors, while his wife studied. During this time, he has worked with four doctors on-staff and, by adding Dr Pavani to the team, this will allow the surgery to open up more appointment times and take additional bookings.

It has been a long road for Dr Pavani who has completed years of tireless study.

During this time, she undertook a Diploma in Child Health through the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and also holds an Advanced Certificate in Women’s Health.

Most recently, Dr Pavani completed a oneyear placement at Sarina Clinic where she gained the experience to now take on her own patients at the Home Hill Surgery.

During this period, the couple spent a lot of time apart, visiting each other most weekends. This makes the reunion at their

shared practice even more special.

“It’s great to be back and finally able to work in the surgery together,” said Dr Pavani.

“I’ve been here since 2014 so I know a lot of the patients well. I am now excited to meet them all again and see them on my own.”

Dr Sarat said it’s been a long few years and that he is grateful to now work alongside his wife.

“I’m looking forward to working with my wife to improve the services we provide to the community! Also, we won’t be as busy and can take more bookings and walk-in patients” he said.

Dr Sarat and Dr Pavani are originally from India and moved to Australia in 2013 where they spent one year in Western Australia. During their time there, they saw

an advertisement for a surgery for sale in Home Hill and jumped at the opportunity of moving to regional North Queensland.

“We are originally from South India, so the weather is the same here as it is back home,” said Dr Sarat.

“I liked the previous owner, Dr Griffiths, as soon as I met him, and I liked the way he ran the surgery.

“I also really liked the community here

which is why we decided to move here.”

Dr Sarat said he is thrilled to now be working alongside his wife at last.

“This has been a long time coming and we’ve struggled to get here – it is good for us and good for the community!” he said.

trategic planning has been high on the agenda for Burdekin Shire Council for numerous reasons. As a councillor it is our role to plan for the future of our community and enhance the vibrancy and liveability for all residents. These master plans allow council a greater likelihood of securing State and Federal funding for major projects when they apply.

We have witnessed the improvements in infrastructure recently due to this forward planning – greater water resilience with the reservoirs in Home Hill and Ayr, the expansion of the Industrial estate to enhance economic development, the macro-algae bioremediation treatment plant for improved environmental sustainability, the development of Plantation Park for residents and visitors alike.

These projects add greatly to our liveability and assist with retaining our population throughout the Shire, which had suffered slight declines in past years but has turned a corner and in the last twelve months we’ve witnessed an increase to our resident numbers which is very pleasing.

id you know that the Shire maintains an extensive network of urban water mains spanning an impressive 302 kilometres?

This extensive infrastructure plays a crucial role in delivering essential water services to homes and businesses.

Maintaining and expanding this water mains network is a significant undertaking that requires careful planning and investment. Council has committed more than $5.8 million to operate and maintain water services to its 6,669 customers in the 2023/24 Budget.

In June 2022, a new long-term treated water storage facility in Home Hill was completed, marking a substantial enhancement in water security for the community. This achievement was made possible through a collaboration between the Queensland Government and the Burdekin Shire Council, which jointly funded the construction of Home Hill’s 5ML Reservoir.

A key project completed during the year was the upgrade of the Ayr/Brandon Water Supply through the construction of a new 10 Megalitre reservoir which provides vastly improved treated water

Jake and his girlfriend left the UK at the start of the year in search of an adventure, without a specific plan or destination in mind.

A very visible project due to its location in the heart of the Ayr town centre is the development of the Burdekin Aquatic Centre, encompassing the water park and new kiosk which recently opened and has been well received and utilised. These improvements are part of a bigger picture, a master plan for the entire Anzac Park Precinct and council have been busy developing a concept plan for this space.

Most recently consultation has occurred in the community through numerous forums and at the local schools to garner ideas and get feedback from our youth regarding the youth zones earmarked within this development. The comments to date have been very positive with our youth being a very important part of the community we wish to retain here in the Burdekin. Initial plans for this development can be located on the council website and I encourage you to take the time to check them out and understand how strategic planning helps to enhance our community.

Their travels took them through Southeast Asia before they bought a one-way ticket to Australia to discover what the Land Down Under had to offer.

The pair ventured up the east coast, with the coastal hubs of Byron Bay, Noosa and Bowen, where Jake saw his first kangaroo, capturing his attention.

“I didn’t realise the diversity of the country,” he said.

“You’ve got everything from sprawling woodlands and tropical rainforests to stunning beaches, I’m blown away.”

True beach lovers, the pair ultimately fell in love with the mesmerising beauty of Airlie Beach.

Jake joins the Burdekin Life team with sales experience born out of his love for people.

Although based in the Whitsundays, he will be travelling to the Burdekin weekly to catch up with people and businesses, friends new and old.

“I love meeting new people and getting to know new people, so I hope to bring a friendly, smiley face to the region and a name that people hopefully remember!” he said.

With a degree in photography, Jake is also excited by the prospect of contributing his creativity to the business.

“I’m in a job that enables me to get creative again and that excites me, so you might find me out and about with my camera now the dust has been blown off it,” he laughed.

With his camera in hand and a warm smile on his face, Jake is excited to continue his exploration of the Burdekin and meet everyone who makes this region great.

The project was fully funded by the State Government. This key piece of infrastructure was brought into service in December 2022 and is an integral element in enhancing the security and reliability of the Ayr/Brandon Water Supply network.

Council also revised and updated its Drinking Water Quality Management Plan to recognise significant water treatment upgrades in both the Home Hill and Ayr Water Supply’s with the inclusion of new Ultra Violet and Sodium Hypochlorite disinfection infrastructure which enhance the drinking water quality and safety.

In addition, Council has continued its inspection and maintenance program on all water and sewerage network infrastructure, ensuring its reliability into the future.

The 302 kilometres of water mains in the Burdekin are a vital lifeline that ensures the community’s access to one of life’s most essential resources – clean, safe and reliable water.

he Burdekin Community Association Inc. (BCA) delivers a wide range of services for younger people with a disability, or condition that impacts their ability to live safely and independently, and their carers. A few of the great programs offered by our Home Care Service are briefly outlined below.

Queensland Community Support Scheme (QCSS) QCSS provides support to people under 65 or under 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who with a small amount of help, can maintain or regain their independence, continue living safely in their home and actively participate in the community. Services include in-home supports and community connection support.

Burdekin Community Transport Program (BCT) BCT provides community transport locally and to Townsville to access medical appointments, do the shopping, attend social activities and venues, visit others etc. Transport under BCT is available for people who experience transport disadvantage and are under 65 and unable

to access, or have limited access, to other transport options including public or private transport. Unpaid carers can also travel in their role as carer. Please note that Transport services are also provided to seniors under our other programs such as HCP, CHSP, NDIS. National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) NDIS supports a better life for people with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. Services include assistance with daily personal activities (showering/bathing/medication monitoring etc), travel/transport arrangements, innovative community participation, development-life skills, household tasks, participating in the community, exercise physiology, personal training and psychological counselling.

A DAY OF INDIGENOUS CULTURE

n a belated celebration of July’s NAIDOC Week, St Colman’s Catholic School spent last Friday morning at Plantation Park with the Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation learning about Indigenous culture.

“Every day is NAIDOC Day, so we’ve brought the kids across and worked with the Gudjuda Rangers so they can learn about the land we stand on,” said Principal Karen Keys.

“It’s very much part of our history of Australia and, in our local area, the First Nations history is such an important part that they need to know about.

“It’s a part of that reconciliation as we move forward, so the children have a

better understanding of where we’ve come from and where we need to go in the future.”

Students were taken on a guided tour of the Juru Walk, where they learnt about plants and food, contributed to a mural by the school’s Indigenous Officer, played Indigenous games, practised dadirri (deep listening) and learnt about the Gubulla Munda Dreaming sculpture.

“Indigenous history is all throughout our curriculum, so it fits in beautifully and doing hands-on activity is where students learn more than just sitting in a classroom,” added Ms Keys.

“The Gudjuda Rangers are very much a part of the school community; the kids love learning from them.”

rt students from years 10 and 11 at Burdekin Catholic High School took to Lloyd Mann Park in Home Hill last week to study the installations making up this year’s Ephemera.

“We have an exam coming up and we have to learn how to deconstruct what the artist is talking about in their art,” said year 10 student Mikkena Murray.

“We have to learn how to write that down and what context the art was made in; everyone’s got their own types of art forms.”

Visual Art Teacher Jeananne Ellis said students are analysing artists and their artworks in preparation for creating their own bodies of work in year 11.

he District Finals of the annual R.O. & B.M. Colls Memorial Lecturette Competition was held at the Home Hill State School Performing Arts Centre on the evening of Wednesday, November 1.

Competitors, Year 6 students, were to deliver a persuasive speech on a factual topic associated with an area of school study. Students were adjudicated on the content, language use and delivery of their speech. The 11 competitors from five local Primary schools presented topics that ranged from the different impacts of technological

advances to the power of speech.

The winner was Asha Licciardello from St. Francis Catholic Primary School, Ayr. Asha spoke eloquently on Mental Health, a School’s Biggest Downfall, persuading the audience that mental health must be addressed in schools. Through the strategies taught to achieve and maintain self-confidence and self-worth, “one student at a time, in every school”, our community would become a happier, more productive and happier place.

“The diversity shown in this exhibition will enable them to broaden their perspective about an artist’s intention, contexts, and location of artworks when being displayed or exhibited and the audience’s reaction.”

Neenah Ivory highlighted Uli Liessmann’s ‘Peace’ as a favourite.

For The Burdekin Sugar Cane Industry

s the globe takes strides in its mission to decarbonise and the Australian Government develops its Net Zero 2050 plan, Queensland Cane Agriculture & Renewables (QCAR) is playing its part through its commitment to renewables and sustainable agriculture.

QCAR CEO Panikos Spyrou said global sustainability standards are at the forefront of the organisation’s mind.

“Whilst the world is in this mode of decarbonisation, the supply of product to marketplace is going to hinge upon how we’re moving towards net zero targets while meeting global sustainability objectives of the international marketplace,” he said.

QCAR aims to support growers by recognising the current environmental stewardship which growers are undertaking, the programs they adopt and the farming practices they apply.

WILLCOX BACKS NFF PROTEST CAMPAIGN

TO KEEP FARMERS FARMING T he National Farmer’s Federation (NFF) has launched its largest protest campaign in almost 40 years in response to recent policies enacted by the Australian Government.

Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox, said that the extraordinary step taken by the NFF is a desperate attempt to save farming from the government who he said has torn up farming confidence in the regions.

“As a third-generation farmer, I can see what this current Labor government is doing to farmers across our region and it’s reckless, senseless, and is going to have dire consequences,” Mr Willcox said.

“I worked the land for most of my life, and I agree with what the new NFF President David Jochinke said at the NFF Conference a week ago; farmers are in the fight of their lives, and it’s only going to get worse if the Labor government don’t do something about it now.

“Every single Australian is feeling the impact of the pain and hurt being put onto farmers.

“The end result of Labor’s bad policies is that families and vulnerable Australians are being forced to pay more for food at the checkout.”

Mr Willcox said that while scrapping the EU trade deal that would have severely disadvantaged Aussie farmers was a good start, farmers are still being punished in every possible way.

“It’s unfortunate that the EU trade deal couldn’t come to a mutually beneficial agreement and walking away was the right thing to do at this time, however it is now time to focus on what the current Australian government is doing that disadvantages our farmers,” he said.

“Instead of taxing international importers for their biosecurity risks, the Labor government wants to make Australian farmers pay more to cover these importers costs.

“The new fresh food tax will impact all farmers and push up food prices.”

Mr Willcox also admonished the Government’s refusal to reinstate the Agriculture Visa after peak food industry bodies warned that agriculture required an addi-

Electronic Tags For Sheep And Goats To Be Rolled Out Across Queensland

ndividual electronic identification (eID) for sheep and goats will commence in Queensland from 1 January 2025 as a part of the agreed national initiative.

The current visual mob-based system is slower and not as accurate as individual electronic tags for tracing sheep and goat movements, particularly if there is an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

The national eID system has three elements to enable rapid contact tracing:

All states and territories have agreed to work towards mandatory implementation of sheep and goat eIDs, working alongside industry, to improve tracing and support an emergency animal disease (EAD) outbreak.

An eID is a device with a microchip inside, generally in an ear tag. This technology has been used successfully for cattle in Australia since 2005 and sheep and goats in Victoria since 2017.

hat is commonly known as the Scartwater Trust and Scholarships had its origins in 1917, when Arthur Henry Wickham Cunningham (Harry) conceived the idea of developing a cattle station in central Queensland to furnish means of rehabilitating servicemen returning from the First World. In March 1917, Mr Cunningham took up four selections of land on St Anne’s Station which became known as Scartwater (an old Scottish word scart or skarth named for cormorant- there were many of these birds on lagoons of the Suttor River which ran through the property.) Harry Cunningham became the manager trustee of the property. Only returned soldiers were employed on the property. There were many donations from such as North Queensland Turf Clubs including Ayr and Home Hill as well cattle property owners of cattle and equipment for the running of Scartwater.

Mr Cunningham, the founder of the scheme, desired that the funds be available for educational purposes and for the alleviation of distress for the returning soldier to secure and/or retain a means of livelihood. Accordingly, it was decided to establish two funds.

Once the station was developed to the point of providing a reliable income, the Trust began aiding ex -servicemen and women by advancing interest free loans. As the need for assistance declined, a new scheme of scholarships to assist the children of ex-servicemen in their

education was implemented. It is for this programme continuing to the present day of Scholarships that is most widely known.

Arthur Henry Wickham Cunningham was born on June 29, 1879, at Woodhouse Station near Ayr to Edward Cunningham and Caroline nee Hann. He married Nellie Maud Wharton of Birralee Station on May 12, 1910. They had four children, Mrs MacMillan, Edward-known as Ted, John and Keith. Harry passed away aged 62 in Townsville on January 8, 1942, as a result of an accident at Strathmore Station. His son Ted carried on as a Trustee of Scartwater.

Ted realised in the fifties that the soldiers had grown old and so the Trust took on building an establishment of the A H W Cunningham Memorial Home for ex-servicemen and wives in Bowen. Land was bought in 1961 and building began with finance from the Scartwater Trust. It came to pass that Scartwater Station was sold in 1979 and the money from that has been invested to finance the Scholarships that still are carried on today as well the Bowen Cunningham Home. Ted married and had children and was a well-known figure in North Queensland circles.

He met his death by a car accident near Strathmore in 1991. He was 80. He was survived by a son Edward Thomas Cunningham who died in 2008. The Scartwater Trust still operates today, its Scholarships for tertiary education and the aged care in Bolton Clarke Cunningham Villars.

Many men and women in North Queensland have been aided in their education over the years. It includes many people from Ayr, Home Hill and the Lower Burdekin Region. What other Trust for the welfare of ex-servicemen and women who served Australian in wars has lasted from one man’s vision Arthur Henry Wickham Cunningham and his many trustees from 1917 to the present day of 2023. Today, there is the Scartwater Trust Scholarship awarded to students of Year 11 and 12, and the Cunningham Scholarship Tertiary Trust for university students.

Business Community Gathers For Last Industry Breakfast of 2023 T he business community gathered at Ayr’s Burdekin Theatre on Wednesday, November 8 for the last Burdekin Industry Breakfast of the year.

Hosted by Burdekin Shire Council Deputy Mayor Sue Perry and Councillor John Furnell, the breakfast connected local businesses with opportunities throughout the region.

With earthworks recently commencing for the Ayr Industrial Estate expansion, Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin and Cadet Engineer Coralie Mannea officially launched the release of non-binding expressions of interest for land at the Industry Breakfast.

“We know that the Burdekin is recognised as having specialist skills in the broad areas of manufacturing, boiler making, fitting and turning, engineering and fabrication and I am proud that local engineers and fabricators are amongst the best in Australia, with some exporting specialised products worldwide,” Ms McLaughlin said.

Unveiling The Remarkable Family Saga Of The Backhaus Family

F

amily and friends, relatives old and new, gathered at the Millaroo home of Elizabeth Tudehope last Saturday, November 4 to celebrate the launch of ‘May the Cane Prosper’, a remarkable family history spanning continents and generations.

The book was written by two second cousins, New Zealand based author Pene Greet and Brisbane based researcher Avis-Ann Ballard, who met at a family gathering in 2017 and bonded over their passion for family history.

“I hadn’t seen Pene since 1961 when she was two and I was 10,” Avis-Ann said.

Pene and Avis-Anne share the same great-grandmother, Louise Backhaus, who ventured from Germany to Australia in 1884 and is the central character of ‘May the Cane Prosper’.

“Pene’s grandmother was Louise’s first daughter, my grandmother was the second daughter and then there was a third daughter who had no children,” Avis-Ann said.

The book charts the family’s movements throughout north Queensland, with descendants now residing across the state.

Avis-Ann said her passion for family history came from her father, who loved his family.

“Being a banker, my dad was very particular, very pedantic about everything, and he kept every piece of paper from everywhere,” she said.

“He also looked after his widowed mother, his widowed aunt and his widowed sister and he had all of their papers and photographs so before he died, I had a chance to go through all of his old photos and he’d tell me his stories.

“He always said he had all this family history and in his funeral file, I found a letter he had written to me and my brother explaining where everything is.”

Avis-Ann and her mother would go through her father’s belongings after his death in 2009, keeping the important pieces of history and ultimately creating a family timeline.

After Pene and Avis-Ann’s meeting in 2017, they began collaborating, sharing, and collecting photos and information.

With the two second cousins based on opposite sides of the Tasman Sea; the book was written entirely by electronic correspondence.

“It’s a beautiful book; there are photographs in there from the 1800s and they look great,” Avis-Anne said.

“We did the whole book by emails so I’m very proud of it.

“It didn’t matter how much information I gave Pene, she always wanted more and that became more enjoyable for me; I became addicted to it all.

“The friendships I have made with these other family members that I didn’t know before has been the greatest thing.

“It wasn’t just Pene and I; it’s been a collaborative effort.”

Book launches were held at locations including the Burdekin, Atherton, Innisfail, and Brisbane, sharing the book and the stories with the far reaches of the family across Queensland.

Children’s Week At Playstars Playgroup

ast Thursday, Giru State School’s ‘Playstars Playgroup’ held a very special playgroup morning for Children’s Week.

The two hour event took place at the school utilising the library, playground and outdoor facilities for an amazing morning of interactive play to celebrate the rights of children, their talents, skills and abilities.

Playgroup facilitator Emily Hervey was lucky enough to win a grant from Children’s Rights Queensland to help fund and facilitate the morning to include a range of engaging activities and special guests, such as the Burdekin Library, to deliver a very special story time for all of the children.

The event engaged families from all over the Burdekin who stayed and played with their children for Children’s Week.

He travelled regional Australia with the boys in black, building their reputation and by 1980, Cold Chisel was a family name with their rock blues, resonating sounds and deep lyrics.

Despite the unfortunate closure of Cold Chisel in 1983, Ian was quick to launch his budding solo career, and released the phenomenal ‘Tucker’s Daughter’ in 1989. This immediate hit was well received across Australia and projected Ian into newfound solo stardom.

‘Tucker’s Daughter’, along with ‘Soul on West 53rd’, ‘Telephone Booth’ and many

other hits on his album ‘Matchbook’, took Ian on a European Tour in 1990, before he returned home and started work on his second album ‘Worlds Away.’

It is no surprise that Ian Moss has evolved to become an Aussie icon, fuelling the Australian narrative since his Cold Chisel days, as he continues to headline across the globe.

And now 50 years on, Ian Moss continues to be an Aussie favourite, with Airlie Beach Festival of Music being one stop on his legendary celebratory tour.

Along with Ian Moss, both Dragon and Ross Wilson are also celebrating 50 years of rock, culminating in these massive Aussie icons calling Airlie Beach home for a weekend of unstoppable music.

The winner received the opportunity to play on the main stage at next years’ festival.

It’s Time To Rock With Sarah McLeod

I

t’s a good time to be alive, with Sarah McLeod and the enigmatic The Superjesus checking in for Airlie Beach Festival of Music, and ensuring great music, and fantastic vibe.

weekend, performing as part of The Superjesus as well as a soloist, there is no better place than the Airlie Beach Festival of Music to reflect on 2023 and share her great musicality.

Sarah, lead singer of The Superjesus, says she is more than excited to return to the festival this year.

“And it’s not just the bands on the Main Stage, but the venues across the main strip. Everyone gets involved, and it’s just amazing. It’s non-stop music. From when you wake up to when you go to sleep, music.”

“We’re busy working, sleeping and drinking water, because once we’re in Airlie Beach, we won’t have any time for that; it’ll be non-stop music and checking out the scenes,” said Sarah.

Sarah, herself, has a busy job, being the official ambassador for the Airlie Beach Festival of Music, as well as on the judge’s panel for the 2023 Passport to Airlie competition.

“I was the unofficial ambassador for years; I just got really into it, and created my own role, but now this will be my third year as official ambassador,” Sarah explained.

As Ambassador, Sarah is busy ensuring the best experience for festival attendees.

“It’s a fantastic job and it’s pretty unique, just telling people about the best things that are happening in Airlie Beach.”

In particular for 2023, Sarah has just returned home following a massive tour with The Superjesus and their supporter, Perry Street Park, as well as releasing a sweep of new music.

“Perry Street Park are a great vibe, and they bring so much energy and joy. It’s one thing to just stand on stage and perform, and another to get involved and bring the vibes. And the boys of Perry Street, they bring the vibes.”

For The Superjesus set, there will be a bit of everything.

“Our classics with a handful of our best, and our happy new material.”

For Sarah’s solo performances, “It’ll be whatever I’m feeling, and how the crowd is looking. You never know what you’re gonna get with me.”

Branching out as a soloist was a big move for Sarah.

“I find joy in going solo. I’m an eclectic person, and I want to write what I want to write. With Superjesus, we have this specific sound that we can’t really deviate from, but I have a short attention span, and want to do everything.”

With the Airlie Beach Festival of Music, we get the best of Sarah, with The Superjesus and as the phenomenal soloist that she is.

One Step Closer For Gleezus

B

owen made and locally loved youth band Gleezus have been busy building a name for themselves, entrenching their sound and dynamic presence into the very thread of music in the Whitsundays.

Evolving from a simple music class assessment to the competition winning band that is Gleezus, their success was unprecedented, but the team have been taking every opportunity to grow as musicians and develop their sound.

Jack Homewood is the guitarist for Gleezus and started the band initially.

“I just fell in love with it,” Jack explained.

“From there, we just started practicing outside of school, and eventually we just got better equipment, and started playing house parties and private shows, and then we played our first big competition at the Townsville Folk Festival,” he said.

Ashton Shepheard is Gleezus’ bassist and says that the whirlwind of the success has been amazing.

“It’s gonna be so awesome,” Ashton explained.

The final mixture of this youth phenomenon is Brock Medhurst on drums, and newcomer Kameron Stoneham, a powerhouse on vocals and a star with music.

“Kameron can just belt out Metallica, it’s great. We all just clicked with her. We can think of a song we’d like to play, and she’ll just rip through it,” Jack explained.

“The other day we were jamming together, trying

to come up with lyrics, and she went outside for 15 minutes, comes back in and is like ‘done’ [handing over some lyrics], and that’s what we used to win Young Whitsundays got Talent.”

Still spinning from their recent success at the top where they won the Young Whitsundays Got Talent in October, the band will soon be performing at Airlie Beach Festival of Music, where they will also receive the ‘rock star’ treatment - full access back-stage passes with headlining act, The Superjesus.

“The festival is massive, with like 15 different bands playing at once at 15 different venues. It’ll be so good to meet some other musicians too, who are into our sort of music,” Ashton said.

Describing their sound as “rock, grunge, all the good old school stuff ”, the band are keen to get on stage and perform to the people of Airlie.

Their set list prepped and ready, with a mixture of covers and originals, Gleezus has over two hours’ worth of music, with a 40-minute time slot.

With dreams of hitting it big professionally, Gleezus are certainly making a great foundation for stardom, with meetings with massive industry professionals in the schedule.

his weekend, Saturday November 11, will see clubs from across the North Barrier Branch converge on the Ayr Surf Club for the annual Surf Rescue Championships.

Winners of these competitions will gain themselves the opportunity to represent the North Barrier Branch at State Titles in the new year.

Preliminary data indicates this increase is largely due to the success of the Fish ‘n’ SIP$ tagged fishing competition, which was announced in December last year.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said that Permit sales have increased more than 15 per cent since the Fish ‘n’ SIP$ competi-

tion started in December 2022.

The restocking efforts across the scheme has led to the release of approximately 3.2 million fingerlings by community stocking groups.

“As part of the competition, anglers had the chance to win up to $50,000 by purchasing a SIPS permit and catching a tagged fish at prescribed stocked impoundments, with $12,000 still on the line,” Minister Furner said.

“It’s also an important part of the Queensland Government’s Sustainable Fishing Strategy, providing fishers with the opportunity to catch popular species sustainably.”

There were also increased stocking efforts due to an additional flood recovery grant program of $200,000 last financial year for south-west, Murray Darling and some Wide Bay Burnett stocking groups.

Burdekin Dam (Lake Dalrymple) is stocked by the Burdekin Fish Restocking Association Inc. In 2017/18, 19,000 barramundi were stocked from SIPS permit sales.

he Queensland Government earlier this year placed a record $1.1 million on the line to support fishing in Queensland’s stocked impoundments, a 16 per cent increase on the 2021-22 financial year.

Revenue from the sale of permits is used to maintain and improve the impoundments via the stocking of native fish fingerlings and other approved activities that improve fishing.

The Ayr Surf Life Saving Club has 11 members putting their skills to the test this weekend.

Following on from the day’s competition, from 5pm that evening the club will be hosting Steve Ward for a live acoustic music session, with dinner and drinks available for purchase, and all are welcome.

Tagged Fishing Competition Boosts Record Grants To Community Stocking Groups The Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) provides a sustainable freshwater fishing option for recreational fishers, who are required to purchase a permit before line fishing in any of the 63 SIPS impoundments.

Competitors will showcase their Lifesaving skills for Champion Lifesaver testing their rescue skills, lifesaving knowledge and resuscitation; Champion Patrol Team and First Aid Teams being exposed to various scenarios.

Two games of triples and two games of pairs were played.

Rink 3 pitted Karl/Margaret, Tony and Gary 23 and 11 ends against Jim, John and Henry 10 and 7 ends.

Rink 4 saw Bob, Dino and Stephen and Peter, Alex and Hugh draw 17 each and 9 ends each.

Rink 6 also saw a 21 end match in which Judy and Glen 31 and 13 ends over Norm and Jocelyn 17 and 8 ends.

An enthusiastic turn out of players enabled a great morning’s play.

Next week is the last junior golf for the year, with a fun two person Ambrose on the cards. Juniors are invited to bring along a friend, parent, grandparent or other family member to join in the fun.

For 3 holes, the monthly medal winner was Ivy Land; for 6 holes, the monthly medal winner was Lyla Land; and for 9 holes, Ethan Pengally won the monthly medal in his first 9 hole competition after moving up from 6 holes this week.

New Berm For BMX

T

he Burdekin BMX Club is gearing up for its annual carnival, scheduled for November 17th and 18th. In anticipation of the event, the club has been hard at work repairing and enhancing their track. Berm 1 has received a major facelift with approximately 20 buckets of dirt added, resulting in a smoother and faster track.

The club expressed immense gratitude to its dedicated track crew, who have spent countless hours in the past weeks to ensure the track

is in top-notch condition. The track’s overall improvement is the result of months of effort during various working bees, and it promises to provide an exhilarating experience for riders and spectators alike.

This year’s carnival will feature the famous Burdekin March Past with a “Pool Party” theme, adding an extra layer of fun and excitement to the event. BMX enthusiasts and the local community are eagerly looking forward to this fast and furious annual sporting gathering.

ly successful event with most players teaming up with players they had never played with and perhaps hadn’t even met before the day.

The day is a special day where players nominate, and their partner and markers are unknown until tee off.

The runners up for the day with 46 points were Trevor Jones and Loretta Mauro and the next two names to go up on the Honour Board with 47 points were Vince Sorbello and Betty Durrant.

Coutts Commercial Tavern Day

ong time supporters of Ayr Ladies Golf Coutts Commercial Tavern sponsored a 4bbb competition on Wednesday October 25.

The pairing of Shirley and Donna Boccalatte were the eventual winners on a countback over Shirley and Donna Reid, both teams with 43 points.

With an odd number of players one group had what they call in golf a ‘swinger’.

In third place with 42 points was Wendy Baker and Ingrid Vaes and in 4th place was Vicki Adcock and Joy Cornford also with 42 points.

For Donna Reid and Donna Boccalatte, this was Shirley Jones and what an amazing round all 3 ladies had.

Junior Cricket Recap

T

he PBR Grand Final in Townsville depleted the numbers in the Challengers and Under 13s last week, but Kyle Wilkie, Morgan Burrell and Tyler Smith didn’t mind having less fielders as they were top scorers with the bat in the Challengers. Paige Elphinstone and Delta Burrell were the pick of the bowlers in this game.

The Under 13s still had enough to field two teams, with the help of a stand-in wicket keeper (Aaron) for the game. Nate Elphinstone and Logan Pickup got the ‘Players of the Week’ Awards for top scoring with 17 runs each. They also took wickets when bowling, two for Nate and one for Logan. Not too far behind them with runs scored was Michael Finn who hit 15 runs. Parker Oar also snared two wickets with Mark Wilkie and Tyler Schultz getting one each.

Our Under 17 mixed Charters Towers/Home Hill team were playing Wanderers in Townsville on Saturday afternoon where we won the toss and chose to bat first. We lost our first wicket in the third over with only 10 runs on the board but settled in to not lose any more at the 15 over

drinks break. A handy 56 run partnership between our opener Corey Heidke and first drop Harry Pickering was broken just three overs later when Harry was bowled. Corey was next out which brought Salvatore Cardillo out to the crease to join his younger brother Thomas for a partnership which produced 38 runs.

The wickets fell quickly then, and we ended up all out on the last ball of the innings for 143 runs. Corey top scored with 42 runs followed by Thomas on 25 and Salvatore with 22.

We got an early breakthrough when Salvatore got one of the Wanderers openers caught in the third over. It wasn’t until the 12th and with 80 runs scored that we took our second when Corey got a finger on the ball after it was smashed straight back down the pitch for a much needed run out. A couple of missed chances and 98 runs before the next wicket, then another in the same over but it was too late as Wanderers had already passed our score. Our bowler with the best figures this week was Salvatore with 1 for 19 runs off 4 overs.

All The Fun From Plantation Parkrun 2 0 people took to Plantation Park for 253rd parkrun on Saturday, November 4.

Three were first timers and two parkrun tourists were among those who ran, jogged and walked the course while four runners achieved new personal bests.

The event was made possible by volunteers Vicky Brennan, Terry Brennan, Steve Crouther, Gwenda Crichton and Donna Howard.

Plantation parkrun started on 17th February 2018.

Since then, 886 participants have completed 4,592 parkruns covering a total distance of 22,960 km, including 796 new personal bests.

A total of 166 individuals have volunteered 1,404 times.

Plantation parkrun takes place every Saturday from 7:00am at Plantation Park, Bruce Highway, Ayr.

Tennis Icon Honoured A Burdekin Rugby In Inaugural Col Casswell League Legend Retires Inter-City Shield O W TENNIS

estern Suburbs Tennis Club were privileged to host the inaugural Col Casswell Inter-City Shield named after legendary North Queensland tennis player and supporter Col Casswell on October 21. Col died in 2021 from brain cancer leaving behind a rich legacy in the sport that will hopefully continue. Nine teams from six different clubs from Charters Towers, Ingham, Townsville and the Burdekin made their way to Wests to put their clubs’ pride on the line. It was amazing to see so many come together, sharing a common love for the game. Kate Casswell said the choice of format was a fitting tribute to her late husband, who loved interclub tennis and the Sugar Bowl above all other tennis. Col would have been chuffed to just know that more people were out there playing tennis on the weekend. For him it was all about camaraderie, sportsmanship and building lifelong friendships.

RUGBY LEAGUE

ver two decades ago, a hesitant eight-year-old boy stood at the gates of Rugby Park in Ayr, feeling queasy about playing his first Rugby League game. Little did anyone know that this young boy, Ryan Davenport, affectionately known as Davo, would grow up to become one of the most tenacious and revered figures in the Burdekin’s rugby league history.

Davo’s unwavering dedication to the game and his fearless approach on the field made him a true warrior of the sport. He was never one to ask his teammates to do something he wasn’t willing to do himself.

His journey in rugby league saw him rise to captain many teams and culminated in a crowning achievement – leading his A-Grade team to a premiership in the TDR (Thuringowa & District Rugby League) in 2015, a pinnacle in the career of any local footballer.

Despite his quiet demeanour, when Davo spoke, players listened. He wasn’t known for saying much, but when he did, his words were inspiring. This was nowhere more evident than in the Grand Final.

Under coach Glen Brock, the Roosters defeated Brothers in the major semi-final and advanced to face Herbert River in the Grand Final. The Roosters held a commanding 16-6 lead well into the second half and seemed poised for victory. However, they underestimated Ingham’s veteran playmaker, Mitchell Seri.

Seri, a crafty halfback, had orchestrated numerous Crushers victories, and he set out to stage another remarkable comeback, putting the Roosters’ hopes in jeopardy. With just two minutes to go, the River surged ahead 18-16 after scoring and converting.

It was in this critical moment, behind the goal line, that Davo called a meeting and addressed his teammates. When Davo spoke, you listened. His plan worked, and as the final siren sounded, hooker Zac Heron scored a sensational try, clinching

the trophy for the Burdekin.

He proudly represented Townsville in the Foley Shield competition and played for the Country team in the City vs. Country clashes.

His dedication extended beyond club rugby league. He also played for the Home Hill Devils in the annual Ayr-Home Hill matches and in end-of-season local club games. Additionally, he co-founded and played every year for the Buffalo Riders in the Bowen Tens, often emerging as champions.

As Ryan bids farewell to his beloved Roosters, he now looks forward to spending more time with his family – Holly, Ally, and Jordi. Though he may receive enticing calls to return to the game, his legacy in Burdekin rugby league is cemented, and he can savour his well-deserved retirement.

Burdekin Pride On Show At NQ Sportstar Awards

A

n unforgettable evening recognising sporting excellence in north Queensland took place at the highly anticipated 2023 MM Electrical NQ Sportstar Awards last Saturday, November 4 in Mackay.

Hosted by, and marking the 40th anniversary of the North Queensland Sports Foundation, the event was a celebration of sporting achievements across north Queensland with three Burdekin superstars, Kiera Wiseman,

Ky Mitchell and Lisa Furnell, all nominated across a variety of categories.

Kiera Wiseman Kiera first started social skiing at 3 years old with her dad, turning to tournament skiing at the age of 10.

Now 18 years old, she’s been tournament skiing ever since.

“I love being able to travel so much for the sport, as well as the amount of really good friends I’ve made,” Kiera said.

finalist in both NQ Junior Sportstar Of The Year and NQ Junior Rural And Remote Sportstar Of The Year, Kiera Wiseman feels proud to be recognised for her hard work in the sport of waterskiing.

Ky Mitchell was also a finalist in both NQ Junior Sportstar Of The Year and NQ Junior Rural And Remote Sportstar Of The Year categories.

The 11-year-old started riding motorbikes at age 3 and racing at age 5, now competing in two disciplines: Flat Track; 85cc 9-13yrs and Speedway; 125cc solo under 16yrs.

“I love everything about bikes from riding for fun to racing speedway and dirt bikes and anything with wheels,” he said.

“I also love the adrenaline rush I get when skiing.”

2023 has been a massive year for Kiera, a highlight coming when she travelled to Chile to represent Australia at the Junior World Championships.

She also competed in her first junior Moomba Master on the Yarra River in Melbourne and represented Australia for the 3rd time in the Aussie/Kiwi challenge in Albury.

While preparing for the World Championships, Kiera would train up to four times a week and often travel to receive expert coaching.

She recognises elite water-skier and twotime world champion of water ski jumping, Jacinta Carroll, as her role model; Jacinta’s world record breaking jumps inspiring Kiera to strive in the sport.

Kiera was announced as runner-up NQ Junior Rural And Remote Sportstar Of The Year and was in Mackay to accept her award.

“It was a really lovely night,” she said.

“I’d just like to thank the sponsors of the event as it’s always such a great night to attend.”

As she finishes high school this year, Kiera is looking forward to enjoying this time of her life and, as for next year she says “Anything is possible”.

Ky said he was extremely happy to be nominated and picked as a finalist in the NQ Sportstar Awards.

Having been selected in the Under 16yrs Australian Speedway Championship, Ky and his family will travel to Tamworth next weekend to take on the next chapter of his racing journey.

While on patrol on Sunday, Lisa and the team completed a rescue, highlighting the importance of her role in the Burdekin community and the justification behind her nomination for NQ Sport Volunteer Of The Year.

“We don’t have a lot of rescues, but it’s nice to know that we’re out there covering the beach, especially in the stinger season,” Lisa said.

Lisa was the first member of the Ayr Surf Lifesaving Club, and has come to achieve 1,000 patrolling hours and she’s also heavily involved in training younger members and fundraising.

She first became involved in the club when her children started Nippers before competing and volunteering herself.

“I just loved the idea of being down there on the beach and patrolling the beach,” she said.

Following on from a Lifesaver of the Year

award in 2022, Lisa was disappointed to be unable to attend the awards but thankful for the recognition and support.

“It was a privilege to be nominated considering there are so many volunteers involved in local clubs,” she said.

“It’s just a great club and we have a really supportive community.”

Harvest Festival Golf Is Back!

he Home Hill Harvest Festival Golf Ambrose saw a massive resurgence in 2023 and returned to be an integral part of the festival program. Home Hill member Doug McCubben had a vision to revive the Ambrose to the legendary event of years past. He approached QSL who were enthusiastic major sponsors of the day, and with the support of Mark Vass and the queens, the teams started to book in to levels not seen in decades.

Fortunately, on the day, Sunday November 5, the weather was very kind, with a nice breeze, and missing the usual oppressive humidity common for this time of year. 37 teams belted, swung (sometimes missed)

and putted around the 9 hole course, and from all reports, everyone had a fabulous day.

The Tradies ended the day as the individual team winner, QSL won for the corporate teams and the Lions Queen Allie-Jo Farry won the queens challenge.
