W

omen are integral to the Burdekin’s agricultural and farming enterprises, contributing significantly to the growth and prosperity of rural industries. They play diverse and pivotal roles, challenging stereotypes that have persisted for too long.

Despite more than 40 per cent of the global agricultural workforce being women, the outdated “farmer’s wife” stereotype lingers, undermining the substantial contributions of rural women in agriculture. Their impact is far-reaching, and their influence is essential for the growth and innovation of rural and regional communities.

Our women in agriculture feature in this edition highlights some of the achievements of local women who have made their bread and butter from working the land.

One example is the dynamic mother-daughter duo, Eileen List and Jenny Cook from Burdekin Growers Services. Their 30-year journey exemplifies the resilience and dedication required in this challenging and often undervalued industry.

Lisa MacDonald, Honeycombes’ Senior Service Advisor, plays a vital role in keeping farming machinery running smoothly, providing unwavering support to farmers during critical times. And Brooke

Tudehope from Dwyer Aviation Services has redefined the role of women in agriculture. She has become a qualified Agricultural Drone Pilot and actively participates in aerial agriculture.

These women and so many more represent a broader community of strong, capable, and innovative individuals who continue to shape the future of the agriculture industry. It is high time to acknowledge and celebrate the pivotal roles women play in agriculture and empower them to achieve even greater success.

I’ve been learning a lot about the agriculture industry this week as we’ve been working on our massive Rural Women’s Day feature, which you’ll find on pages 15-21.

I hope to show them the wonderful locations I’ve navigated so far, like Mount Inkerman, Groper Creek and Alva Beach, and I hope to use their visit to explore some more undiscovered wonders.

I’m sure we’ll patronise a few pubs and cafes – I know they’ll love the brewery in Brandon and they must taste a delicious Home Hill pie.

Sofie has made herself right at home in Lorraine Strathdee’s home. Photo supplied

t was love at first sight for Lorraine Strathdee when she came across Sofie on Facebook.

But now, over a week since Lorraine brought Sofie home, she has been nothing but a bundle of love.

Sofie, the cutest black and white fluff ball, available on the Burdekin Pet Rescue Facebook page, was lovable and cuddly, but without her forever home.

“It took a second for her to settle, and she would hide underneath the bed, but now, she follows me around, meows, loves to knock over photo frames, and she’s discovered she can fit behind the TV cabinet and gets covered in cobwebs.

However, a few weeks later, when Lorraine saw Sofie in the pages of Burdekin Life Newspaper, she fell in love and decided it was time to bring Sofie home.

Unable to get in touch with Burdekin Pet Rescue, Lorraine rang our head office, and we gave Lorraine’s number to our contact.

From there, the rest is history.

On the first meet and greet, Lorraine said that Sofie was so anxious she didn’t want anything to do with Lorraine.

“She was slow to settle but I was patient, and now I can pick her up and cuddle her.”

Although she did consider changing Sofie’s name, Lorraine decided against this with how nervous Sofie was, but now her nickname is ‘Baby’, which brings a smile to everyone’s face.

“Sofie was just the perfect package.”

BURDEKIN BUSINESSES INVITED TO TAKE PART In “Game-Changing” CopperString 2032 Project

B

usinesses from around the region met at the Burdekin Theatre on Tuesday morning to hear from organisations involved in the delivery of the CopperString 2032 Project and learn about how they can get involved.

It comes after the Queensland Government announced a $1.3 billion package to progress work on the 840km transmission line which will run from outside Ayr to Mount Isa. “CopperString 2032 is the largest ever economic development project in North Queensland, and the largest expansion to the power grid in Australia,” said Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

The funding is a vital step towards construction commencing in mid-2024 and will enable publicly owned energy cooperation Powerlink, alongside construction partners UGL and CPB, to undertake detailed design and engineering and environmental assessments.

“CopperString 2032 essentially connects the north and northwest, the North West Minerals Province and a whole lot of potential renewable energy development to the national electricity market,” said Powerlink Queensland Manager Community

and Stakeholders Nicole Maguire.

“There are a lot of advantages for the region and it’s a game-changing project for the area in terms of the regional development it’ll bring, the jobs and the contracting and supplier opportunities.

“It’s probably a once in a generation project for the north of the state and we’re excited to be delivering it.”

The Department of State Development along with Powerlink, CPB and UGL presented to businesses in Ayr and other regions inviting contractors or suppliers to express an interest in being a part of the project.

A ‘Day for Daniel’ At Local JPs

Burdekin Schools Share The Load H

eld annually on the last Friday of October, Day for Daniel honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe, asking all Australians to wear red on the special day.

Daniel Morcombe was a 13-year-old boy from Queensland who was abducted and was labelled as a ‘missing person’ for eight years before police were eventually able to track down his killer in 2003.

Burdekin Special Education School, Burdekin Christian College and Burdekin Family Day care all took part in the Day for Daniel event, with a sea of red flooding the Burdekin in support of the day.

Parents, carers, and educators were encouraged to start a conversation with children and young people about person-

al safety, with schools and early learning centres to conduct child safety education activities.

Day for Daniel is the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s biggest fundraiser each year.

With support through fundraising, the foundation continues to develop free resources and programs for parents, carers, and educators to teach children how to stay safe. Funds also contribute to supporting young victims of crime.

CAN Launches CT Scanner Awareness Campaign With Movie Night

aunching a campaign to raise awareness for the need of a CT scanner in the Burdekin, Burdekin Community Advisory Network (CAN) hosted a movie night at Galaxy Cinema last Thursday, October 26.

The screening ‘About My Father’ saw at least 45 people and was an opportunity to gather the community to launch the campaign and raise funds for the Brighter Lives Foundation.

Kickoff The Conversation K

ickoff The Conversation, hosted by Burdekin Shore Council, was a raving success, with the drawcard of Aussie rugby league legend Wally Lewis encouraging locals to open up about their mental health.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the event was a dedicated effort to raise awareness, combat the stigma associated with mental health issues and equip attendees with invaluable tools and resources for self-care and support.

“Over 170 attendees enjoyed a night of inspiring stories, insights and tips from national and local speakers covering persistence, resilience, determination, reaching out and self-help,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“The highlight of the evening was guest speaker and rugby league legend Wally Lewis, who shared his struggles with epilepsy, divorce and parenting a deaf child. His anecdotes from his footy career entertained the crowd and he

generously gave away signed memorabilia and books.”

Speaking alongside Wally was the Unbreakable Farmer Warren Davies, Channel 9 presenter and author Steve Hadden and locals Janai Giddy, Andrea Piotto, Kate Gaze, and Lawrence Polga, who spoke on a range of topics including battling drought, debt, depression, alcoholism, and overcoming mental health issues.

CORES’ Ross Romeo and Sean Winning, a Clinical Nurse Consultant with Tackling Regional Adversity through Connecting Communities (TRACC) also shared professional advice on how and when to seek help.

“I extend my gratitude to Queensland Health for their generous contribution through the Mental Health Initiatives Funding, and to the speakers for openly sharing their experiences,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“Without your support and valuable insights, this event would not have had the same profound impact.”

Australia Day Awards Calling All Arts Nominations Open Enthusiasts RADF Grant Applications Now Open I I t’s time to reflect on the year that was and highlight those who make our region great as Burdekin Shire Council has announced the commencement of nominations for the 2024 Australia Day Awards.

The awards symbolise acknowledgement and celebration of the extraordinary contributions and accomplishments of individuals and groups within the dynamic Burdekin community.

FARMING GONE WRONG

RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Burdekin Shire Council, with nominations set to close on Friday 24 November.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said two rounds of RADF are conducted each year, with applications for projects to be undertaken between January and June 2024 now being accepted.

“The Regional Arts Development Fund has been instrumental in shaping a number of fantastic events and initiatives in the Burdekin over the past few years, and I encourage any individual or organisation who has an idea, program or project that would directly develop the arts to consider applying,” Ms McLaughlin said.

“RADF is able to support visual art or design, craft, performing arts, multicultural arts, festivals and literature – the only limits are applicants’ imaginations.”

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Queensland Government’s successful, long-term partnership with local governments supports the delivery of hundreds of arts experiences, employment opportunities and capacity building for arts and cultural workers across the state.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthen local communities and drive economic outcomes through arts and culture, the Queensland Government has provided $2.184 million for RADF 202324 to 59 local councils who have contributed a co-investment of $1.979 million,” Ms Enoch said.

“Projects funded through RADF support communities to share stories and creativity, provide important pathways for learning and connection, and boost local creative economies and tourism.”

yr Criminal Investigation Branch recently charged a 24-year-old male with 22 break and enter and fraud offences. It is alleged the male was stealing large quantities of copper wire and diesel from business premises and farming properties in the Ayr, Clare, and Giru areas over the past months. The fraud offences relate to the male selling the stolen copper to scrap metal dealers claiming he was the lawful owner of the property.

Townsville Property Crime Unit charged the same male with a further 10 offences relating to the theft of copper wire in the Townsville District.

Roadwork Delays Cause Concern

M

assive delays to road projects across the country as a result of a 90-day review of all infrastructure projects is causing safety concerns locally as flood season approaches and risks to flood prone areas increases.

The review was announced in May and due to take three months, but 170 days later there is no news as to when it will be completed.

There are several local projects affected by this, namely the proposed project for the new bridge and the highway alignment.

These two projects are long-term developments that have not yet begun, but their funding sits within the government’s list of infrastructure projects, progress of which is halted.

In addition, the Burdekin Deviation has now been brought to a stop and Member for Burdekin Dale Last, says he is concerned about how flooding will be managed this storm season.

“Key projects for North Queensland that are currently in limbo due to the so-called review,” said Mr Last.

“The Burdekin Deviation aims to address road closures due to flooding and those closures impact the entire north of the state.

“Currently we have a proposed corridor reserved for the Burdekin Deviation and funding to secure that corridor is just one example of what’s at risk the longer this review drags out.

“It will be a multi-billion-dollar project that could go right back to square one if the federal government continues to dither.

“In May we were told the review would take 90 days but here we are, 170 days later, and the federal government won’t even say when the results will be made public.”

Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox, is also concerned about the delays which he says are halting “life-saving road projects”.

“Crucial infrastructure projects have stalled under Labor and it’s just not good enough. The Australian people deserve answers, the people in our electorate of Dawson deserves answers.

“Families living in rural and regional areas deserve to be able to travel to and from work and to access crucial services safely.

“This was a question about roads and infrastructure, but it seems all roads lead back to The Voice for the Prime Minister,” said Mr Willcox.

our Catholic parishes from the Burdekin region came together as one last Tuesday, October 31 to ritualise the formation of Burdekin Catholic Parish.

After many hours of consultation with parishes and their communities, recommendations were made by Catholic Bishop of Townsville Bishop Tim Harris to combine the parishes of Ayr, Giru, Home Hill and Burdekin Valley into one.

“We prepared each of these separate parishes and we said to them all, ‘There’s strength in numbers and coming together’,” Bishop Harris said.

“As we know, the church isn’t growing; there are challenges not only for the church, but for local communities.

“What we want to say in all of that is that the church is alive and we’re trying to reconfigure how we do things and try some

new ways for new times.”

Although the four parishes have combined to pool resources and personnel, the former parishes will remain operational and masses will continue.

A new Mission Council has formed to lead parish operations, led by Father Manoj Mathew and Chairperson of the Parish Leadership Team Bev Lando.

“I truly believe that this is going to give a lot more hope to the people here, there’s going to be more life in the community, more vibrancy of people working together,” Father Mathew said.

“I’ve always been about the collective group of peoples in the Burdekin,” added Ms Lando.

“The church is a broad combination of people who are going to walk together.”

School Reunion Plans For 2024

alling all students of the Home Hill State High School year 8 class of 1964!

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the opening of Home Hill State High School, a group of former students are planning a reunion to gather and catch up with their fellow classmates.

Jenni Auteri (Jezard) is part of a group of those students who catch up regularly and is putting the call out for any other people who were in that class to gauge interest in a reunion.

“We’re planning for just our class to get together some time in August across one or two days in Home Hill depending on what sort of feedback we get from people,” Ms Auteri said.

“I’m looking forward to catching up with as many people as I can.”

1964 was the first time year 8 transitioned

from primary school to secondary.

Years 8, 9 and 10 were moved from the high top of Home Hill State School to the new high school which Ms Auteri said was an exciting time for the students.

“It was this whole big new adventure going to our high school and starting it off,” she said.

“We didn’t have a library, we just had lots of boxes, so some of the kids got to help unpack the boxes and set up the library.”

osita Previtera grew up in a cane farming family surrounded by agriculture in many forms.

She’d join her mum and dad checking the irrigation on the cane farm, spending much of her childhood weekends riding the four-wheeler and helping pick and pack mangoes and other small crops.

Her mother had a very active role on the property, which Rosita says was rare at the time, so it felt like a natural step when Rosita embarked on her own career in agriculture, joining Honeycombes in 1995 when she finished school.

Starting in administration, was the beginning of a long and illustrious career for Rosita, who has worked across many departments in the company before filling the role of Service Warranty Advisor across the group’s seven branches.

“In my role, I oversee warranty for the group, providing support to customers and staff utilising our dealer platforms, and our main goal is to have our customers receive the best service support possible and limit their downtimes,” Rosita said.

he last thing a farmer needs at this time of year is a mechanical breakdown but it’s people like Lisa MacDonald, Honeycombes’ Senior Service Advisor, who keep the machines running and the customer happy.

Working closely with customers, Lisa handles service requests and bookings, resolves service issues while providing

Brooke Tudehope

Soaring High in Agriculture

I

n the heart of Burdekin, where agriculture has long been the lifeblood of the community, one remarkable woman is taking to the skies to redefine the role of women in the agriculture industry. Meet Brooke Tudehope, the co-owner of Dwyer Aviation Services, a helicopter business that has been an integral part of the region’s farming landscape since 1980.

Dwyer Aviation Services, which has been under the ownership of Brooke’s husband, Don, since 1997, offers a range of services, including aerial agriculture (spraying, spreading, and seeding), firefighting, powerline work, sling work, and more. However, the pair’s passion lies in the world of aerial agriculture.

Originally from Proserpine, Brooke relocated to the Burdekin in 2001, and she has been an integral part of the business since then, handling all administrative tasks, including bookings, accounts, compliance, and marketing. In 2002, she even began her journey to obtain a Commercial Helicopter License but had to put the flying component on hold when she had three children in quick succession.

Fast forward to 2023, with their three children now in their mid to late teens and more independent, Brooke has embraced additional roles within the company, becoming a qualified Agricultural Drone Pilot and taking on responsibilities as part of the Helicopter Ground Crew. She now drives the helicopter loading truck, mixes and loads chemicals, refuels helicopters and flies agricultural drones.

“It has been a really big change, going from the office to the field, but I have enjoyed the more physical work, the outdoors, seeing all different farms, learning so many new things and finally meeting the farmers and graziers and their families in person after years of talking to them on the phone,” Brooke reflected.

“I have even gotten used to the 3am alarm clock!”

Recognising the potential of drones in the aviation industry, particularly in aerial agriculture, the Tudehopes decided to invest in this technology in 2020. Last month, they welcomed their third large drone for aerial spraying, spreading, and seeding.

The goal is to expand the use of drones to complement their existing helicopter ag business – while Dwyer Aviation Services will still have jobs only a helicopter can do, they are using the ag drones more and more in the local area.

Their latest drone is larger, smarter, and more productive, with a 50L capacity for spraying and an 80L capacity for spreading and seeding. The technology has also seen significant advancements, including increased obstacle avoidance range, airframe and battery improvements, and treatment mapping technology. Notably, Don and Brooke were the first in the country to be licensed on this new model of drone in late September.

“With Don’s decades of experience in agricultural flying in manned aircraft and in the application of agricultural chemicals, plus his local knowledge, together with what I’ve learned on the technology side of things, we make a pretty effective agricultural drone team,” Brooke said.

ooking back over the past decade, Ashley Corradi is grateful that she’s been able to have a fulfilling career without leaving her home town.

Flourishing within Wilmar and the agriculture sector, Ashley is proud of the teams she has worked with to conduct site audits and improve safety standards.

“There is no better feeling than working as a team towards a common goal and getting a good outcome for the site,” she said.

Starting in the laboratory with Wilmar Sugar and Renewables in 2013, Ashley moved into a safety administration role at Pioneer Mill before becoming a Safety Advisor earlier this year. It’s a role she loves as she gets to learn firsthand the day-to-day operations of the site.

Working within a male dominated industry, Ashley advocates for women to just give it a go.

“There are so many aspects to the sugar milling sector, which means there is so much to learn,” Ashley explained.

“Rural Women’s Day recognises the critical role and contribution that rural women make in our society. This day in itself gives rural women a platform to share their stories and knowledge, to inspire the next generation. When women support each other, incredible things happen.”

t is easy to see Sally Rizzi’s passion for people, for encouraging their growth and supporting individuals every way she can.

This is why her position with Wilmar Sugar and Renewables, as People and Culture Senior Coordinator is the perfect fit for her.

Having been a venue manager for 17 years, Sally decided it was time for a fresh start in a new profession.

“I was looking for a change that still allowed me to interact with people but with better working hours,” Sally explained.

“So, I went back to university and studied my Masters in Business in HR Management whilst working full time. I worked in HR for a manufacturer in Brisbane before moving back to the Burdekin where I grew up.”

Moving back to the Burdekin was an easy decision for Sally, particularly shifting into a position closely associated with agricul-

ture and farming.

“I love the learning. There are times when I sit in an interview for a different position and, through the questions and discussions between the candidate and the hiring manager, I learn something different about the role for which I’m recruiting or the sugar manufacturing process.”

All in all, Sally loves Wilmar Sugar and the mills.

“I would have to say a highlight is my current People and Culture team within the Burdekin mills. I engaged each of these ladies for their position at the sites, and they have proven to be capable, witty and dedicated women who are a joy to work with daily.”

omen in Sugar & Ag Burdekin Inc is a non-profit, non-political organisation with the aim to form a supportive network to unite and support all women in the agricultural sector.

The organisation has an executive committee comprising of President Frances Besterman, Vice President Lisa Pozzebon, Secretary Annalea Matthews and Treasurer Rebecca Love who strive to meet regularly to share knowledge of the industry, along with matters of interest for their members and community.

The drive for Women in Sugar & Ag Inc is to harness their contributions, of knowing how they feed the world, manage the environment and future energy sources, as well as maintaining biodiversity.

“Women make up more than 40 per cent of the global agricultural workforce, which makes it exciting for us to form a supportive network of like-minded women working in the Burdekin region,” President Frances Besterman stated.

“It is a rewarding feeling, being able to contribute to the support and knowledge of our beautiful and agriculturally rich region.”

From actively working on farms to industry partners, to simply being part of an agricultural community, the passionate focus of uniting women by building and sharing their knowledge base is vital to increasing understanding of all the various commodities within the Burdekin region.

This open dialogue is dedicated to encouraging all women to take a proactive approach in both industry activities and decision-making processes.

Membership is open to all women, with the organisation striving to facilitate networking activities on top of general meetings which can include field days, mill tours, farm tours, catching up with guest speakers and other events within the agricultural industry.

Finding the right information and presenting what is relevant about the regions’ diverse commodities are key factors in the engagement of the members.

A challenge the organisation has faced is the entrenched gender roles within the agricultural industry: “For our organisation to be able to facilitate women’s empowerment through knowledge, education and networking is just one way to start breaking stereotypes and achieving gender equality and balance in the agricultural sector,” Ms Besterman said.

Highlights from the past two years include the Regional Conference in 2022 – Uniting women from Bundaberg up to Cairns - as well as hosting numerous networking events focusing on mental health and technology advancements.

The organisation aligns with the mission of Rural Women’s Day which highlights the essential role that rural women play in the food systems of the world, promoting and being active in the discussion offers a renewed opportunity to commit to building on the vision of knowledge sharing, networking, and thinking outside the box, so that rural women everywhere benefit equally from their own productivity.

N

utrien Ag Solutions is backed by a strong team of women who are all as passionate about agriculture as the next. From the agronomists assisting the region’s farmers in the field to the administration officers providing support to the business, each play an integral role in one of the Burdekin’s key ag businesses, helping to grow this fundamental industry and paving the way for the future of women in ag.

Fee For Service Team Leader Eilis Walker leads a team of agronomists to undertake crop checking and follow up recommendations to target key pests and diseases in horticultural crops. She’s always had a passion for agriculture and rural communities and loves working with the diversity of crops, farms, and practices, providing a challenge every time she conducts a crop inspection.

Eilis’ passion is felt throughout her team, consisting of Shantelle Arratta, Liz Stockton and Jess Murray who all grew up on farms surrounded by agriculture and Agronomists.

“I found them exciting and inspiring,” Shantelle said. “With a love for science and wanting a career where I could help people, agronomy was the right fit. Rural people have a different outlook on life and understand its challenges. The resilience and kindness of these people encourage me always to try my best.”

“My career started out on farms as a labourer and these were some of the most memorable times thus far,” added Liz. “The friendships I made and the satisfaction of being involved in all aspects of growing a crop the entire way through. Nowadays, working as an agronomist is more rewarding and I’ve seen more growth for myself and my career in this line of work.”

“I was raised in the industry and developed my passion for agriculture at a very young age,” said Jess. “Agriculture has always been a very supportive community and has helped shape my career pathway.

Women have always been a part of the industry, but we are now getting the recognition for it.”

Trainee Agronomist Chloe Profke chose to complete work experience with Nutrien Ag Solutions while in high school and is now starting her career with the business, proving the undeniable influence of pas-

sionate and positive role models in the agriculture industry. While developing in her role, Chloe hopes to show other young women how satisfying and welcoming the agriculture industry is.

“There are lots of opportunities in agriculture,” Chloe said. “If you don’t like the part of agriculture you are in, there is lots of other paths to go down! It is the most rewarding job.”

Fertiliser Logistics Coordinator Molly Casey started in the business as Support Sales Merchandise before moving into the fertiliser department two and a half years later and loves dealing with great customers on a daily basis. Her advice to women considering or starting a career in agriculture is to “go for it!”

“There is a place for everyone within the agricultural community,” she said.

Administration Officer Kaylene Ley is an example of the variety of roles available to those entering the agriculture industry, performing all administrative duties for the business.

“Even though I am not out in the field, I still get to interact with the farmers who come into the branch or phone regarding an issue that I can help with,” Kaylene said.

“I have made many friendships over the years and as agriculture is a majority of the Burdekin district, the industry will keep going strong.”

The team reflects on Rural Women’s Day as an opportunity to highlight the women who work across the vast variety of roles in agriculture and inspire the next generation.

“It’s good to be recognised as women contribute significantly to this industry, as well as our families and local communities,” said Merchandise Manager Kerry Davison, who’s main role is looking after orders and procurement for the branch, dealing with both suppliers and customer enquiries.

“It establishes that not every farmer is a male and that behind farmers are often a support network of women,” added Shantelle. “Within agriculture is a wonderful, diverse mix of people, providing women a

fulfilling and rewarding career.”

A

griculture can seem an intimidating industry for anyone to enter, but Melissa Boulter is redefining what it means to work in ag. As Office Manager with Queensland Cane Agriculture & Renewables (QCAR), Melissa heads the daily operations of the organisation’s office and service offerings to growers across the state.

She says that not owning a farm herself is one point of difference between her and others in the industry, but she doesn’t consider it a disadvantage; it’s her passion for sugar cane, ensuring QCAR’s growers are adequately represented, that drives her to excel.

“I really love seeing the results from our growers from the start of their planting to the end product of the sugar being sold and all the processes in between,” she said.

Melissa transitioned from financial planning into a manager role with QCAR in February this year. The organisation’s constant evolution and collaboration with organisations like AgForce Cane Ltd saw her take on the role of Office Manager in July. Utilising her clerical skills and her passion for people, Melissa has become the backbone of the business, inspiring those around her while learning from and growing with the countless colleagues she considers to be her role models.

mall business in any industry can be a challenge and as owners of Burdekin Growers Services, Eileen List and Jenny Cook know what it means to roll up their sleeves and work across a variety of roles in the business. The business will celebrate 30 years in 2024 and the mother daughter duo have managed to navigate the many ups and downs in both the business and their personal lives to reach this major milestone in an industry they say can be challenging, undervalued and unrepresented.

At 17 years of age, Eileen was offered a position with a small business that distributed fuel and fertiliser. She was given a book and encouraged to learn about fertilisers and chemicals, but it’s the handson knowledge and experience she gained from the people around her, learning in the field from “the best of the best”, that led her to a position she could see a future in.

“I shaped my career by learning from life experiences and by listening to and learning from many in the industry,” Eileen said. “It is a pleasure to work with farmers; they are the most valuable part of our rural industry.”

Eileen was then inspired to start Burdekin Growers Services when Jenny finished high school, handing down that knowledge and experience, and Jenny says she believed she would have always ended up in agriculture.

“You can never have better role models than your parents and family and mine have shown me not to be scared of hard work,” Jenny said. “I love being a part of one of the most important yet challenging industries in Australia. Agriculture isn’t so much a job; it’s my life.”

The pair are passionate about inspiring the next generation of agriculture talent, encouraging young people to be the masters of their own destiny as they enter the industry.

“Like every industry, most of our knowledge comes from experience,” said Jenny.

“Don’t be afraid to say you don’t know something and don’t be afraid to ask someone who might.”

Knowing they have the trust of their loyal customers, Eileen and Jenny are passionate advocates for agriculture and Burdekin Growers Services is proof of their hard work and dedication to the industry.

“We pride ourselves on good old-fashioned service,” said third generation owner Kari Ravizza.

McCathies Furniture Plus was first opened in 1974 by Kari’s grandparents, Jack and Milly McCathie, and back then it was known as Ayr Secondhand Dealers.

Jack and Milly were an entrepreneurial pair, starting many successful businesses including Supreme Taxi Service, Macs Milk Bar, Macs Ayr Toyland, McCathies Real Estate, McCathie and Jones Travel Agency, to name a few.

The original furniture store was located where Burdekin Motors is today but when Kari’s parents John and Lyndy McCathie

took over the business, they relocated to its current location at 262 Queen Street, Ayr. While the store primarily sold second hand furniture back then, it also sold new foam mattresses and new furniture, a direction the McCathies wished to pursue, turning the store into an entirely new furniture store in 1998.

Since then, they haven’t looked back and when Kari and her husband Rob Ravizza decided to return to the Burdekin and join the family business in 2013, the third generation started to take the business forward into another new era of growth and success.

“The introduction of our website has kept us extra busy, and we ship Australia-wide!” said Kari.

elebrating an impressive 20 years in business this year, Ellsley Metals has expanded significantly since they first moved into the Industrial Estate over two decades ago.

Centre Charts Bright Future With A New Build

T

he Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre recently held their Annual General Meeting, a time for members to reflect on achievements and lessons learnt over the past year.

With a combined 90 years of service between them – Kay, Elvie, Bev and Marilyn have been champions of the Centre. Without their involvement, the Centre would not be where it is today.

Reports were presented by President Kay Duggan, Treasurer Elvie Dickinson and Centre Coordinator Natalie Saroglia, as well as committee members Bev Garioch, Leonie Harch and Mary Pattinson attending the AGM.

The long-term effort put in by the four ladies, volunteering their time to make events happen is why the Centre has a strong stability.

Councillor John Furnell followed on with a presentation of an annual donation to the Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre, on behalf of the Burdekin Shire Council.

The Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre provided $1,781,581 in community value during 2023. This value equated to $7.46 for every $1 of Queensland Government Neighbourhood Centre funding, or $296.93 for each hour the Neighbourhood Centre was in use.

With a vision to re-energise the Centre at Committee Level, the AGM encouraged new memberships and the sharing of professional skills possessed by community members to benefit the wider community.

With a new five-year funding agreement with the Queensland Department of Communities, it will be an exciting time experimenting with different activities to meet the social and wellbeing needs of the community.

With the Centre operating under a community-minded development focus, it looks forward to seeing what can be achieved by working alongside members of the Burdekin region.

Celebrating The Patron Saint Creative With Clay

T

he Feast Day of St. Colman was celebrated with a dinner and fun-filled entertainment on Friday, October 20 at St Colman’s Catholic School, Home Hill.

The audience was entertained with Samoan dancers, comedy skits by Home Hill Choral Society – which left the crowd with sore cheeks from laughter, a crowd immersion into a “Pub Choir”, trivia and poetry from a local farmer.

Everyone enjoyed their night tremendously.

Mass on Sunday morning was a combined affair with Samoan and Italian singers and pupils from the school being involved in the celebrations.

A morning tea followed where all were able to take time to sit and enjoy each other’s company.

ast Saturday saw the Burdekin Potters hold its final Adult Beginner Hand-building course for 2023.

Seven enthusiastic ladies took part and enjoyed creating some unique handmade pieces.

Burdekin Potters Inc., located in Plantation Park, has seen a huge resurgence of interest in the art of clay, with membership soaring from around 10 four years ago, to almost 60 at present.

The Burdekin Potters was established in 1975 and will be celebrating 50 years in 2025.

Our youngest member is 16 with our most experienced potter aged in her mid-70s.

The club is very inclusive and caters to both men and women from the regional communities.

The Pottery Club will be holding a Christmas exhibition, beginning with the Plantation Markets on Sunday, December 3 through to Sunday, December 10.

Inspiring The Next Generation Of Ag Innovators S tudents from Home Hill State High School were recently given new insight into North Queensland’s key agricultural industries thanks to a new initiative from The Tropical North Queensland Drought Hub (TNQ Drought Hub) in partnership with the AgForce School to Industry Partnership Program.

Students also explored Ag-related courses at TAFE Townsville and experienced cutting-edge technology, including Farmbot and VR headsets, before embarking on a visit to Coral Coast Barramundi, where students got to see Barramundi varieties as well as the hatching sheds and outdoor ponds.

The AgInspiration program and TNQ Drought Hub partnership aims to shed light on the promising and vast careers in agribusiness and introduce high school students to the various pathways on offer.

Day three featured an insight into prawn farming with Pacific Reef Fisheries where students explored the different areas within the business, from prawn spawning to packing, and learnt about the efficiency improvements brought by their algae farm, Pacific Bio.

TNQ Drought Hub Program Lead Jane Oorschot said the program provided 23 Year 10 and 11 students with the opportunity to engage first-hand with experts in the agricultural field.

“The agricultural industry is continually evolving and changing, and as the saying goes, ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’,” said Dr Oorschot.

“Students had the opportunity to learn about the diverse career opportunities in the agricultural sector whilst gaining insights into the skills and qualifications required in a variety of industries.

“It also really made students aware of the multitude of possibilities within the sector, spanning from production to cutting-edge technology and beyond.”

Day one saw students explore the meat processing industry with a visit to JBS Townsville and learnt more about the job roles within The Port of Townsville, which included a tour of the premises.

The second day featured a behind-thescenes tour at North Queensland Fresh in Bowen, showcasing the journey of capsicums from farm to consumer, technological advancements, and diverse career options available in produce.

Rev Up The Creativity

O

n Tuesday, October 24, some St Francis Catholic School TECH students participated in the annual Townsville Grammar School’s LEGO Robotics competition.

The group of students were presented with an unfamiliar challenge and had to use their knowledge, teamwork and problem-solving skills as well as creativity to produce a moving car which they called the Next Generation Green Machine.

This challenge involved students not only

designing the car but also building it with LEGO and programming it to move.

This was the first time that St Francis participated in this competition and the students did a wonderful job coming away with a trophy for their creativity.

It was an amazing opportunity for our students to take their knowledge and apply it in a new way and an experience they thoroughly enjoyed.

The final tour of the program took them to Rocks Farming Company, Queensland’s largest family-owned sugarcane farm, where Students had the chance to tour the 2700-hectare enterprise and see first-hand how it uses technological advancements to improve its operations.

Louise Nicholas, Teacher of Agricultural Science at Home Hill State High School said programs like AgInspiration are the key to fostering the next generation of agricultural innovators.

“The engagement of the Home Hill State High School Year 10 and Year 11 students over this three-day tour has provided a unique opportunity to witness local agriculture in action, fostering a deeper appreciation for the complexities, challenges, and innovations within the field,” said Ms Nicholas.

“This outlook allows students to make informed choices about their future and potentially become the next generation of agricultural leaders, contributing to the sustainability, evolving needs and growth of this crucial industry.”

The night was a showcase of all the great work that students and staff do together every day to ensure our students have the opportunity to excel.

Into The Past Visit Lake Proserpine Bite Picnic With A View At Charlie’s Hill Home Of The Big Barra

nown as one of Australia’s best Barra impoundments, Lake Proserpine is just a two-hour drive south of the Burdekin, and not only is it a favourite spot for avid fishers, it is also a popular destination for a range of outdoor pursuits.

For a modest $10 entry fee ($5 for children, or $25 for a two child, two adult family pass) Lake Proserpine can be yours to explore and enjoy for a weekend away in nature.

Owned and operated by the Whitsunday Regional Council, Lake Proserpine is a destination for the community to enjoy and visitors to discover.

Director of Commercial Businesses, Craig Turner, said that Lake Proserpine is a hidden gem in the Whitsunday region.

“The beautiful Proserpine Dam has been activated!” he said.

“We have bush camping for all size rigs, non-powered water sports, floating pontoons for fishing and fantastic glamping tents.

“This is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy nature-based activities at a very affordable price.”

The facility is also expected to incorporate

motorised water sport by the end of the year.

Go Cats Whitsunday are launching specially designed two-seater boats that are similar to a jet ski but have a fishing pontoon on the front.

These versatile vessels are perfect for navigating the different areas of the lake.

Mr Turner says they are also hoping to introduce off-grid eco-cabins soon, the perfect “green footprint” for Council’s carbon neutral goals.

Nearby on-site facilities include toilet blocks, shower amenities and a kiosk operated by a friendly and knowledgeable team.

There are also three pontoons and a jetty installed for ease of access for boaties.

Visitors can stay for up to seven nights at the lakeside bush camping sites or indulge by staying in one of the glamping tents.

Last month over 150 families attended the inaugural Family Fishing Day, and Council now have plans to make this an annual event.

The lake is restocked with 20,000 Barra fingerlings each year, so both amateurs and experienced fishers know they are sure to reel in a good catch!

While the wooden towers that once supported transmitting and receiving aerials have since been removed, the foundations of various structures near the igloos remain as a testament to the site’s historical and military value. The physical remains of the radar station tell a story of dedication and resilience during a challenging period in history.

For those seeking a distinctive outdoor adventure, Charlie’s Hill is just a short six-minute drive south of Home Hill. As you journey along the Bruce Highway, keep an eye out for signs on the left side of the road. Turn onto Charlie’s Hill Road, and after about 1.5 kilometres, the hill itself comes into view on the right. Access to the hill is straightforward, with an unsealed track leading from the road.

Visiting Charlie’s Hill offers more than just a glimpse into the past; it’s a chance to have a truly unique picnic experience surrounded by history.

Lions Deliver Eye Screening To Home Hill Students

S

tudents at Home Hill State School now have a clearer picture of the state of their vision thanks to the Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP).

The program brought trained Lions volunteers from across north Queensland to the school on Monday, October 30 to conduct a series of eyesight screens on students of all ages.

LEHP is an Australia-wide initiative that has been visiting schools across the country for eight years.

Irene Braddick is the LEHP Facilitator for the north Queensland region, travelling to remote and regional locations with a team of volunteers to complete the screenings.

“Kids don’t know, they think they see the same as everybody else,” Ms Braddick said.

“We pick up one in five for a referral to an optometrist for a full eye examination and I do ask the schools to follow up those referrals,” Ms Braddick said.

“90 per cent of vision loss is preventable, it’s just a matter of going back for a screening.

“When we come back next year, then we might pick up something new because eyes alter all the time.”

It’s the first time the program has been in the region and Home Hill – Ayr Lions club member and Public Affairs Officer for North Queensland Nick Wiseman is eager to expand it into other schools.

“It’s so important to get to the regional schools because otherwise they miss out.”

“This is my first time volunteering but it’s something that I and our local Lions club are keen to get rolled out across the area, especially for the smaller schools,” he said.

Students are led through four different tests; one photographing their eyes with a Welch Allyn vision screener, one testing their ability to identify shapes, one testing their depth perception and one testing their perception of colours.

“We all know kids and even adults get overlooked with all types of health issues, so identifying vision issues early on in their life is extremely important, so I’d love to see as many kids in the Burdekin as possible get the opportunity.”

alloween captured the imaginations of young and old on Tuesday night, as the Edwards Street Halloween House became a hive of light, sound and activity.

Costumes varied from Wednesday Addams to Batman, with the exceptionally decorated home of Jeff Lund and Leon McCormack inciting wonder and fright in all attendees.

Celebrate History At Burdekin Machinery Preservationists Open Day A last-minute appeal to a Federal Minister and a frantic effort by sugar mill workers to save the crushing are just two of the stories behind the amazing array of machinery that will be on display to the public at the Burdekin Machinery Preservationists’ (BMP) Open Day on 12 November. The Townsville and Mackay Machinery Clubs will also be there, ensuring the display is bigger than ever.

Among the many attractions is the Marshall tractor. Built in 1910, it was one of the tractors that replaced bullock teams, signaling a major advance in agricultural technology. When BMP took on the massive restoration task, the tractor had been exposed to 90 years of neglect and exposure. Some parts had to be machined from scratch by Club members. But it almost became a story of lost opportunity when a private collector identified the rare machine before it had been restored and had it packed for shipment to England. It took a last-minute intervention by the then Minister for Environment and Heritage to stop the shipment and refuse the application for export.

Another popular attraction is the Walker No 1 Engine – the first engine manufactured by Walker’s Engineering in Maryborough in 1927 for Kalamia Mill. During

emergencies, power from the engine could be fed down the mains along Beach Road to power the Ayr Hospital. This wonderful old engine last worked in the aftermath of Cyclone Althea to power the mill after the loss of mains power. Tom Barton tells the story.

“I worked at Kalamia on instruments between 1970 - 1975 for Hughie Smart and with Reg Edwards,” he said. “Bunny Smith was a senior engineer. Althea was a real test. We got caught with a yard full of cane and all of our steam powered electricity was knocked out. We used No 1 to slowly get our main steam boiler and unit up to restart the mill. We could only use one bagasse feeder or one fan, or one pump at any given time until we had sufficient steam and electricity. We were running around shutting off every use of power down to every light bulb to match load. Thankfully we got there or it would have been a major disaster for the mill and farmers to lose all that cane. No 1 came through!”

When no longer required, Wilmar offered the engine to the BMP. Weighing around 25 tonnes (the flywheel weighs 7 tonnes), the Club disassembled, moved and restored the massive engine. Make sure you see and hear this mighty engine at the Open Day.

As part of its working museum, the Club operates a fitting shop, a machine shop and a blacksmith shop. The Club is always looking for new, enthusiastic members of any age so come

along to the Open Day and if you would like to work alongside other machinery enthusiasts and learn new skills, ask about becoming a member. Help to restore and preserve these magnificent machines and become a part of their stories.

he swim season extends through April next year, and the Burdekin Swimming Club welcomes swimmers of all skill levels and ages. The club currently has swimming ranging in age from five to 50 years old. Participants can engage in all swim strokes or focus on the ones they are most comfortable with. Beyond the fun and fitness aspects, the swim club also offers opportunities for those aspiring to improve their times.

Swimmers have the chance to attend competitions where they can challenge themselves against peers from around the region.

Club nights are held every Wednesday night, with a 6pm start time.

aturday’s senior cricket took to the astro pitch as Home Hill Cricket Association was hosting the North Queensland Cricket Association’s U13 boys representative trials this weekend, with the two unbeaten teams, Crowned Mongrels and Guardian Pharmacy, facing off for an early season lead on the ladder.

Crowned Mongrels won the toss and elected to bat, with opener Lucas Sunderland and number three Adam Camer getting things back on track after an early wicket, scoring 27 off 32 and 21 off 18 respectively.

Guardian Pharmacy then tore through the middle order, taking the next six wickets for only 13 runs, before Alex Stillhard, Joel Hanson and Brad Patti finished the innings strong scoring 29 off 20, 40 off 37 and 12 off 23 respectively.

Bowlers Jd Wilkins, Kane Batchelor and Andrew Cardillo all took two wickets each and Isaac Cardillo, Ross Parker, Daniel Olditch and Doug Mccubbin all took one to have Crowned Mongrels all out for 153 off 24.2 overs.

Guardian Pharmacy also appeared to struggle with the change of conditions, losing their first four wickets for 19 runs.

Joey Southwell batting at six and Daniel Olditch batting at eight were the only two batsmen to score double figures, with 11 from 11 and 39 from 29 not out respectively.

It was too little too late, however, with Crowned Mongrels bowling them out for 80 runs from 15.4 overs to take the victory.

Jack Oborne and David Vass both took two wickets for the bowling team while Leo Olditch, Alex Stillhard, Nicholas Pengelly and Adam Camer all took one.

couple of special milestones happened in the Under 13s this week with Marshall Parker getting a hattrick and Jacques Gardner hitting his first ever four in a hardball cricket game, finishing on 11 not out at the end of his innings.

Both were deserving of the ‘Player of the Week Awards’ they received after the game.

Other notable mentions with bat and ball were Logan Pickup who scored an unbeaten 13 runs which included 2 fours and Nate Elphinstone who took 2 wickets for only 5 runs.

In the Challenger Blaster’s games Kyle

Wilkie and Tate Parker scored the highest partnership with 33 runs, followed by Billie Muilwyk and Jamie Goldsworthy on 25 runs.

Morgan Burrell, Kye Quinlan and Kip Nicholas all bowled really well and each took wickets in their overs.

Queensland Cricket’s Antony Stewart who came down from Townsville to help out was having so much fun with the other Challenger group that he didn’t record any stats for their game.

It didn’t really matter at the end of the game because the players and Antony all had a great time playing cricket.

With all three teams having played two games each, Crowned Mongrels take a clear lead on ladder winning both their games while Guardian Pharmacy have won one and Peto’s Marine remain on the bottom without a win.

Peto’s Marine will get their chance at redemption when they take on Guardian Pharmacy on Saturday.

n Sunday, the annual Sheahan’s Shootout was held. Thanks went to Scott and Judi Sheahan for sponsoring the popular event once again.

A stableford was played and then 6-hole numbers were drawn. The stableford points for these 6 holes were totalled. Five players went straight through and a putt off was had to determine the 6th player through.

The six players that went through to the shootout were Mac Jones, Val Smith, Ross Wilkie, Craig O’Keefe, David Falco, and John Power. Val Smith and Mac Jones dropped out after the first hole followed

by Craig O’Keefe and Ross Wilkie after the second hole. That left Dave Falco and John Power to fight it out. They both had a par on the final hole to be played so another putt off was had to determine the winner.

David Falco took first prize home and John Power second prize. The daily win-

ner was Ross Wilkie with 44 points from runner-up John Power. Pin shots on 4/13 went to Greg Macelroy, Megan Barbagallo and Bev Macdonald. On 9/18 they were won by Craig O’Keefe, John Power, and Ruth Cooper.

This Sunday is the Harvest Festival Ambrose.

Double Dolphins In All Ayr Golf Club Blacks Carnival Finals Foursomes Championships GOLF

wo Burdekin Rugby League teams, known as the Burdekin Delta Dolphins, made a strong showing at the Bindall Sharks All Blacks Carnival in Townsville, reaching the finals of the competition but narrowly missing out on top honours.

Despite facing teams bolstered by current and former NRL players, such as Ben Barba, Josh Dugan, James Roberts, and Gehamat Shibasaki, the Burdekin squads held their own with local pride.

In the women’s division, coach Tamara White praised her team’s performance, emphasising their commitment to fast, open football. Although the Dolphins were one of the smaller teams at the carnival, their spirited play left a lasting impression. Tamara noted that the presence of physically imposing opponents may have contributed to their final result. Unfortunately, a few key players, including Martina Monday, Teah Lee Monday, and Tamara herself, had to withdraw due to injuries sustained at a prior Mackay carnival.

ultimately went to the Eastern Warriors, who secured victory with a score of 24-10.

In the men’s division, coach Emene Monday encouraged his players to keep it simple and enjoy the game. The Dolphins followed his advice and displayed exceptional teamwork and skill, coming tantalizingly close to securing the Grand Final win.

However, they fell just short, losing 20-19 in one of the most memorable games the carnival has seen in years.

Dylan Doak, the five-eight from Roosters A-Grade, received the prestigious title of the overall player of the carnival. Yet, it wasn’t only Doak who earned recognition.

Leonard Heron was named the player of the series, with hooker Jayden McMinn earning the player of the finals award. Raymond Campbell Jnr was recognized as the most improved player of the carnival, and winger Nemia Nawave stood out as the best-performing back.

Coach Emene Monday expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the team’s success, including Martina Monday, Annie Nauque, Vanessa Monday, Peter Heron, Keon Noah, Gavina, and Michaela. Despite the tough loss in the finals, the Burdekin Delta Dolphins left a lasting mark on the Bindall Sharks All Blacks Carnival, showcasing the region’s rugby league talent and spirit.

yr Golf Club witnessed a thrilling contest during the Foursomes Championships Honour Board event, which took place last month. This paired event, known for testing even the strongest of friendships, added a unique challenge to the game, as players found themselves in unfamiliar places on the course thanks to their partners.

In the Gross event, both for men and women, after 18 holes, four teams found themselves tied with equal scores, leading to an intense playoff. The ladies’ teams of Janet Trezise and Loretta Mauro, and Khyla Cursio and Nat Smith both finished with an 87 Gross score. Janet teed off first on the 18th hole, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Both teams executed excellent approaches to the green, and a second playoff hole seemed inevitable. Khyla’s par putt narrowly missed, but Loretta stepped up and sunk an incredible 25-foot putt, securing the victory. Loretta and Janet will now have their names etched onto the Honour Board.

clinched victory with a 69 net score, determined by a countback over Michelle Stockdale and Ann Phelan. In third place, with a 73.5 net score, were Evelyn Webb and Vicki Adcock.

On the men’s side, the playoff featured two teams: Ross McLaughlin and David Harding faced off against Adam Eathorne and Jake Lacey. The approach to the green proved pivotal, as Team Adam and Jake capitalised on their opportunity, emerging as the winners.

Jake and Adam will also have their names added to the Honour Board. In the Gross competition, Rohan Mauro and Nick Louden secured third place.

In the Net competition, the father-son duo of Robert and Josh Potter claimed victory over Ross McLaughlin and David Harding. Neville Eathorne and Matt Wight secured third place in this tightly contested category.

The Foursomes Championships at Ayr Golf Club provided an exciting day of competition, leaving players and spectators thoroughly entertained.

Brave Battling At North Aussie Championships LIFESAVING

ver the weekend, eleven of the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club members attended the North Australian Championships in Mackay for three gruelling days of competition.

They battled it out in the pool at The Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Friday for the Pool Rescue Championships, then competing over two days at Mackay Harbour for beach and surf events.

The club returns to normal training this weekend, as well as turning their focus to additional training of lifesaving skills with the North Barrier Branch Surf Rescue Championships carnival held in Ayr on 11th November.

This carnival will allow members to test their knowledge of lifesaving skills including resuscitation, surf awareness, rescue skills and first aid.

Dozens Dive In For Swimming Club’s Opening Night

lub nights have officially kicked off for the Burdekin Swimming Club, and their recent ‘come and try’ night made quite a splash with approximately 80 swimmers taking to the water, marking an excellent start to the season.

In addition to the club’s dedicated members, swimmers from various swim schools enthusiastically joined the event to have some enjoyable races in a friendly setting.

Although club nights emphasise participation rather than competition, each child’s performance was timed and recorded.

These times serve as personal benchmarks, motivating swimmers to return to the next club night and strive to beat their own personal bests. Those who achieve new personal best times are rewarded with the coveted Freddo’s!

The club will be hosting another ‘come and try’ event on the 8th November.
