Al Buskers noi C’andiamo (ABC) Music – Reggae / Funk Do 22
In Ticino sono poche le persone che non hanno ballato sulle note di un concerto degli ABC, che smessi per l’estate (ma solo nominalmente), i panni della lotta contro Babylon, forse in costume da bagno, questo mese di luglio andranno al Busker, e lì, oltre ai ticinesi riusciranno a coinvolgere anche i tanti turisti girovaghi per le sponde del Ceresio. In Ticino, there are very few people who have not danced to the tunes of an A.B.C. concert. The band interrupting (only temporarily) in July, their crusade against Babylon and probably donning a bathing suit, perform at the Busker Festival where, just like in Ticino, they conquer the many tourists wandering around the shores of Lake Lugano. Alabaster Quartet with/out Major D. Generate sono 4 giovani musicisti cresciuti in Ticino, al momento sparsi da qualche parte che pure loro faticano a riconoscere; si presume stiano ancora in Europa, quella geografica, il continente, che non è l’UE e nemmeno la principessa fenicia della mitologia greca, probabilmente non in quelle zone dove serve fare il visto per entrarvici. The group takes shape during several phases, each one visibly watched over by general Mr. D. Generate. The organization will include 4 musicians tormented by the polyphonic figure of the general: a soul full of ambiguous and roaming hesitations. In 2007, he announced his return to the members of the quartet while they were getting ready to settle and overturn the general’s monomania. 14
Alessandro Baronciani (IT) Visual - Fumettista Ve 19 - Sa 20
Alessandro Baronciani, nato nel 1974 e originario del pesarese, lavora tra Pesaro e Milano come art director, illustratore e grafico pubblicitario. Ha iniziato a farsi conoscere autoproducendo albetti fotocopiati che spediva tramite posta alle persone che si abbonavano, fino a raggiungere un pubblico sempre più vasto. Un esperimento mai visto prima nel campo dell’editoria che è diventato un piccolo caso editoriale nel mondo del fumetto e un traguardo straordinario per un’esperienza di auto-produzione. Queste storie sono state poi raccolte nel volume Una storia a fumetti pubblicato nel 2006 da Black Velvet Editrice e sempre per la stessa casa editrice pubblica il romanzo a fumetti Quando tutto diventò blu. Ha lavorato per molte agenzie pubblicitarie ed è stato regista di spot a cartoni animati per diverse aziende. Ha pubblicato illustrazioni in numerose riviste e lavora come grafico per le case discografiche come Universal, Mezcal e La Tempesta firmando le copertine di gruppi e cantautori come Bugo, Perturbazione, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti. Ha una rubrica a fumetti sulla storia della musica su “Rumore magazine”. Alessandro Baronciani, born in 1974, native of the Pesaro area, works in Milan as an art director, graphic designer and advertising illustrator. He started to become known, by self-producing comic-strip books, photocopied and posted to subscribers, until he attained a wider audience. An unique experience that has become a benchmark event in the world of publishing comics and an amazing achievement for an experiment in self-production. These stories have been collected together and published in book form, titled: “Una storia a Fumetti” in 2006, by Black Velvet Editrice and for the same publishers, a graphic novel called “Quando tutto diventò blu - When everything turned blue”. He has worked for many advertising agencies and directed the animated commercials of various companies. He has published illustrations in numerous magazines and works as a graphic designer for record labels such as Universal, Mezcal and The Tempest, designing the Album covers of groups and songwriters like Bugo,, Perturbazione and Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti. He produces a strip on the history of music on the monthly, “Rumore Magazine”. 15

Alexander Koblikov (UCR) Visual - Marinaio giocoliere Ve 19 Sa 20 e Do 21 Un abilissimo giocoliere di estrema grazia ed eleganza che con volto impassibile, sempre tra l’ironico e il compiaciuto, fa volteggiare fino a 10 palle in contemporanea. Alexander Koblikov nasce a Donetsk in Ucraina e ora vive a Kiev. Ha cominciato a fare il giocoliere intorno al 2004 al Collège di varietà e arti circensi di Kiev. Ha ricevuto una medaglia d’oro per la sua abilità di giocoliere al Cirque de Demain Festival nel 2009 ed è stato insignito nei Top 40 Most Popular Jugglers of the Year nel 2010-12.
Alessandro Fiori rappresenta senz’altro quanto di più personale ed unico la nuova scena cantautorale italiana possa oggi vantare. Attingendo a piene mani dalla tradizione meno allineata degli anni ‘60 e ’70 (Jannacci di ”Giovanni Telegrafista”, Piero Ciampi, il primo Lucio Dalla, Ivan Graziani, Cochi e Renato al tempo de “il poeta e il contadino”), Alessandro Fiori è riuscito a elaborare un nuovo linguaggio fatto a volte di caustica poesia urbana incastonata in improbabili scenari visionari e naif, che lo vedono come un poeta/menestrello capace di rapire i sentimenti della gente grazie alla sua disarmante genuinità; la genuinità con cui Alessandro riesce a parlare di sé e del mondo che i suoi occhi vedono, raccontando storie quotidiane infarcendole di colorata psichedelia linguistica irresistibile e contagiosa. Un genio al servizio del popolo… un cantastorie moderno che con un’intelligenza affilata riesce ad intrattenere le platee,divertendole con le sue storie spesso al limite del pazzesco e del surreale. Alessandro Fiori is probably the most personal and unique singer-songwriter today’s new Italian scene can boast. Drawing heavily from less aligned traditions from the ‘60s and ‘70s (like Jannacci’s of “John the telegrapher”, Piero Ciampi, the early Lucio Dalla, Ivan Graziani, Cochi and Renato at the time of their work: “the poet and the peasant”), Alessandro Fiori has managed to develop a new language. Sometimes using caustic urban poetry set in unusual, visionary and naive scenarios, similar to a poet or minstrel who can capture the spectators’ feelings. He captures them through his disarming authenticity, genuineness with which Alexander succeeds to talk to them about themselves and the subjective world he sees, stories of everyday life, entwined with colorful linguistic psychedelics, both intriguing and contagiously amusing. A genius at the service of the people ... a modern storyteller using his sharp intelligence to entertain audiences, charming them with his crazy and often surreal stories. 16
An extremely skilfull and elegant juggler Alexander has a very solid ten ball stacked multipex pattern that he can run for over 70 throws. Alexander Koblikov was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, and now lives in Kiev. He started juggling around 2004, and was trained by Yuriy Pozdnyakov at the Kiev state college of variety and circus arts. Alexander received a gold medal for his juggling at the Cirque de Demain festival in 2009. He has been on the Top 40 Most Popular Jugglers of the Year chart three years in a row (2010-2012).

Becky Lee and Drunkfoot (USA) Music – One Woman Band Sa 20 - Do 21 “Andrea Bignasca passeggiava per Lugano con una chitarra in mano. A un certo punto aprì la bocca e ne uscì qualcosa di forte: la sua voce”. Andrea Bignasca è il cantante dei Vermillon Rouge, band ormai espansa a Zurigo e Losanna. Il rock, le sue radici e i suoi sviluppi più recenti intridono gli accordi e le note della formazione ridotta al minimo: voce, chitarra e anima. “Andrea Bignasca was strolling in the streets of Lugano with a guitar in his hands. Suddenly he opened his mouth and something powerful came out: his voice!” Andrea Bignasca is the lead-singer of the Vermillion Rouge, a well-known rock band, especially popular in Zurich and Lausanne. Rock music roots and a progressive sound characterize Andrea’s solo performances, essentially voice, guitar and lots of feeling.
Andrea Rottin (IT/CZ) Music - Experimental folk Mer 17 - Gio 18 Andrea Rottin è nato a Treviso, Italia, nell’inverno 1983. Nel 2001 inizia a scrivere le prime canzoni che vengono poi performate e pubblicate da un trio composto da lui, Giorgio Tempesta e Carlo Veneziano. Si sposta poi a Gorizia dove segue il corso di Film Studies e lì, da solo senza gli altri due elementi del gruppo, riprende vigore e diventa musica quella parte di sé più oscura e lo-fi. Andrea Rottin was born in Treviso, Italy, in Winter 1983. In 2001 he started writing his first songs which reflected his love for both loud music and acoustic guitar, quiet singing and wild screaming, performed and released by a trio featuring himself, Giorgio Tempesta and Carlo Veneziano. Later on he moved to Gorizia, where he studied Film Studies. In Gorizia there was not much time left for playing with the boys… so the lonely and dark lo-fi side took advantage of the situation, resulting in a record featuring only him playing drums, bass and guitar. 18
Proprio come Jessie Mae Hemphill, Becky Lee ( Becky Lee Walters) è un lupo femmina, solitario e ribelle, nel mondo dominato dagli uomini del blues-rock’n’roll. È una delle pochissime one man band al femminile del mondo che suona la chitarra, la cassa, il rullante tramite un pedale e il timpano con la stessa mano che usa per suonare la chitarra, il tutto con una coordinazione tale da far sembrare di trovarsi davanti a una band di quattro elementi. Nata e cresciuta nel caldissimo deserto dell’Arizona Becky Lee sta suonando ininterrottamente dal 2008 tra America ed Europa, accompagnata dal suo fido piede ubriaco; ha condiviso il palco con diversi importanti artisti (tra cui Reverend Beat-man, Jay Reatard, The Oblivians) che ne hanno apprezzato le qualità. Just like the late Jessie Mae Hemphill, Becky Lee ( Becky Lee Walters) is a renegade and Lonely She-Wolf in the world of men dominated Blues Rock’n’Roll. She is one of the world’s few female one (wo)man bands plays guitar, kick drum, snare w/a foot pedal and floor tom with her strum hand with such co-ordination you could swear it was a 4 piece band. Born and grown up in the hot desert of Arizona Becky Lee has been touring America and Europe with her Drunkfoot constantly since 2008 and has shared stages with the likes.

Chiedimi una Storia (I) Visual - Raccontastorie Sa 20 - Do 21 “Chiedimi una storia” è cercare una piazza, al centro del paese, e trovare un angolino dove posare le sedie e il leggio; aspettare, anche un’ora, che qualcuno si segga ad ascoltare; guardare le persone che passano, spesso indifferenti; chiedere ogni tanto a qualcuno se ha voglia di ascoltare una storia....
Un uomo coraggioso Un enorme pallone Uno show divertente È sofisticato, elegante, urbano…ogni tanto. Spettacolare, surreale, dolce… sempre. La metamorfosi di un uomo con un pallone di quasi due metri di diametro.
The name means “Ask me for a story”, which is to look for a square, in the center of the town and find a spot where to position the chairs and the lectern, to wait, up to hours, for someone to sit down and listen; looking at the often indifferent people, watching the world go by, every so often asking if someone wants to listen to a story....
A brave man A huge balloon A funny show Sophisticated, elegant, urban… sometimes. Spectacular, surreal, sweet… always. The metamorphosis of a man with a balloon of almost 2 meters in diameter.
Bizz’art Orkestar (FR) Music - World Gi 18 - Ve 19
La Bizz’art Orkestar è un gruppo musicale atipico, cosa che si potrebbe dedurre anche solamente dal nome che portano. Bizzarra è la loro musica che non segue direzioni precise ma mescola tradizioni con oceani di distanza. Lo Steel-drum, strumento caraibico, accompagna qualsiasi brano; sia che questo tenda al folk balcanico sia che strizzi l’occhio alla tradizione francese, dando un senso di vero straniamento, almeno per chi non è avvezzo ai confini incerti.
The Bizz’art Orkestar is a pretty atypical musical group, which one could deduce simply from their name. Bizarre is that their repertoire too, which does not follow precise directions but mixes traditions originating oceans away. The Caribbean steel-drum accompanies all their songs, whether it comes from the Balkans or winks at French traditional folklore, giving their sound a true sense of estrangement, at least for the majority, for those not accustomed to such uncertain boundaries.

Chris Lynam (UK) Crazy comedy Sa 20 - Do 21 Why this job? I do this job because if I hit people in real life I would be in prison, but now I can do it & people laugh. What makes you happy? Money makes me happy, but also unhappy, because when I have some, I spend it, and then I realise its not enough! Whaaaaaaa! What’s funny for you? Buster Keaton is funny for me, and when children fall over when they are learning to walk, & the things they say when they are learning to talk. What drives you doing this? There is a big Clown God with a big stick, & if I don’t make people laugh, I get a big smak on the bum! That’s not the first time you come here: which experiences have you had in Lugano? I love the desert in Lugano, and the way everybody speaks Japanese and looks Japanese and all the Japanese restaurants and Japanese cars, motorbikes and boats. I also love the way the fish come out of the lake at night and have private parties in the park. Its a pity there are so many mountains. If you like, I could spend a few days after the festival taking them down and making sure everything was flat! 21

Dead Western (USA) Music - Alternative Folk Sa 20 - Do 21 Provenienti dalla scena dello Psycho-folk della US-Westcoast, Dead Western non è affatto semplice da classificare: un trovatore, un dandy o un hippie? Chi lo sa...e, in fondo a chi interessa...? C’è da dire infatti che è uno dei personaggi più interessanti e impressionanti del panorama, non solo per la sua voce dal timbro così profondo che scende in zone sconosciute, ma anche per la forza lirica e per la semplice bellezza che caratterizzano i suoi pezzi.
“Bestie, l’ultimo album della band, è un vero e proprio cantico delle creature sbagliate - nonché dalle fattezze umane”. Alberto Bianda e Antoine Déprez sono il nucleo di questa band. Entrambi appassionati di musica e suonatori fin da giovani, a un certo punto della loro vita hanno dovuto fare una scelta, una scelta fra vista e udito che è stata l’inizio del percorso professionale che li ha portati ad essere il primo, un noto e apprezzato grafico, e il secondo un ottimo illustratore. L’eclettismo è una malattia comune degli artisti, e le passioni sono difficili da soffocare; incontratisi in Ticino, insieme hanno ripreso la passione mai sopita, portata avanti nel tempo singolarmente, dedicando il loro interesse per il blues e il rock ad un progetto con un nome e una prospettiva. Devil’s Bridge, in partenza un duo, si allarga, a volte diventando trio, quartetto, e si libera in lunghe sessioni cariche di energia e carisma tra sliding guitars e ululati canori. È qui forse che questi due interessanti e simpatici personaggi si mostrano ancora più vivi, giovani e selvaggi di quanto già sono, qui dove l’animo non si incanala in nulla ma semplicemente si esprime. Both music passionates they play since their young age, but at a certain point in their life they had to make a choice between view and hearing: this was the beginning of a professional route that led Alberto to become a famous and appreciated graphic designer, whereas Antoine became a great illustrator. Gli Eleonore Quartet nascono in Ticino nell’estate dle 2011 come band acustica indie folk; durante le prime performance il gruppo locarnese si presenta come trio i cui membri provengono tutti da esperienze musicali simili. Le ultime evoluzioni della band hanno portato un orientamento nuovo e più definito, con contaminazioni e sonorità spesso tipiche del gypsy folk pur sempre caratterizzato da un suono molto acustico e dalla naturalezza dei singoli strumenti. The Eleonore Quartet was formed in Ticino in the Summer of 2011 as an acoustic indie folk band. During their first performances, the group from the Locarno region introduces itself as a trio with similar musical experiences. The latest changes in the band brought a new and more defined course, with contaminations and sounds often drawn from gypsy folk music, but still characterized by an extremely acoustic sound and the genuineness of each instrument.

Tra le varie attività che fanno restano tre settimane in una capanna sotto la diga del Luzzone dove scrivono canzoni, imparano a suonare strumenti, ascoltano musica e passeggiano tra le montagne. La colonia si conclude con la stampa di un album che presenteranno in concerto al buskers. Dei grandi. Juan Manuel Gomez, in arte Goma, è uscito dagli studi di Scienze della comunicazione a Buenos Aires, si è guardato attorno e ha deciso di cambiare strada, ma non i vestiti che portava sopra la cintola. In braghette a spasso per il globo, felice all’equatore e meno al Polo, ha accresciuto la sua arte di strada e arricchito di esperienze e relazioni il suo essere. Durante il suo show si tramuta in un maestro dell’inaspettato capace di trasformare piccoli episodi quotidiani in avvenimenti artistici ricchi di humor. È sulla strada che Goma materializza la sua immaginazione mettendo insieme la physical comedy ad abilità da giocoliere e realizzando azioni improvvisate che ribaltano il punto di vista sulle cose apparentemente più scontate e ordinarie. Sembra dunque che, dopo aver mutato il corso della sua vita, cerchi di applicare la stessa legge di cambiamento e sguardo rinnovato al mondo intero; e chissà che qualcuno non se ne accorga, e ne rimanga talmente colpito da decidere di seguire le sue orme diventando un cacciatore.
A far parte del trio nominato Gospel Blastfighter sono Santo Nelson, il quale può così finalmente dar voce al suo autismo, John Foonjah che mena corde di tutti i tipi, perché le tipe non si menano, e Fra’casso che picchia sulle pelli di palle di pollo, fatte a Pellio da qualcuno del posto la notte perché il giorno lavora. I tre allegri ragazzotti si barcamenano per sbarcare il lunario con dei pezzi che pescano dal blues primitivo e vengono portati in un territorio punk campagnolo, altrimenti detto rurale. I loro testi toccano temi seri come la regolamentazione del territorio e i suoi inutili e tristi inquilini capitalistici, la nascita sproporzionata, versione conigli e funghi, dei “compro oro”, bene rifugio in tempi di crisi, dove gente rivende ricordi di famiglia per pagare il leasing di auto rinnovate mese dopo mese, e poi banche, moralità, campagne di prevenzione, campagne pubblicitarie, campagne che non esistono più e personaggi tipici e storici del luogo, della città conosciuta oggi come “La Grande Lugano”.
Juan Manuel Gomez (GOMA) was born in 1981 in Santa Fe, in the Pampa Humeda of Argentina. After studying Science of Communication in Buenos Aires, he quit his degree moved by the vibrating cultural pulse of the capital city; and decided to travel to enrich his skills; but also his humanity and capacity of communication. As a Street Performer he had played in many of the biggest Streettheater Festivals around Europe; but also in Museums and differents Events and Fairs. The multicultural approach, critical awareness and simplicity is spread on his work and on his personality. He had amused and mesmerized audiences in more than 25 countries. Goma, master of the unexpected, proposes modern slapstick comedy, he can surprise us all, transforming everyone’s minor daily habits into hilarious brief performances. The Gospel Blastfighter Trio is formed by Santo Nelson, who may well finally give voice to his autism, John Foonjah that plays all strings because you do play the girls … and Fra’casso who beats on drum-skins, but strictly not chickenskin, made by someone from Skinburg overnight, as he holds a day-job… These three merry boys make ends meet playing their songs fished from the depth of ancient blues-seas and performed in country-punk territory, also known as ‘rural’. Their lyrics discuss serious issues such as territorial regulations and relative unnecessary, sad capitalist tenants, disproportionate births reminiscent of rabbits and mushrooms, or “buy gold” , a safe haven in times of crisis, where people exchange family heirlooms to pay their car leasing, month after month, or subjects like banks, morality, prevention campaigns, advertising campaigns, campaigns that no longer exist or typical local historic characters of the city known today as “The Great Lugano”.

Gli Hot Potato Syncopators sono stati insigniti dello scettro di sovrani del divertimento a ritmo di jazz e swing! Provenienti direttamente dall’epoca d’oro dei ruggenti anni ‘20, questi distinti gentiluomini, in giacca, farfallino e scarpe lucidate a dovere, propongono una serie di pezzi tipici delle jazz e swing band di quei tempi, intercalati a squisiti momenti di humour inglese, brillanti gag teatrali e battute d’attualità. Fin dal lontano 1927 (data totalmente inventata) questi vecchi segugi del jazz, nutriti a cucchiaiate di swing, deliziano gli spettatori con furiose galoppate di ukulele, vorticosi giri di basso suonati col bidofono, vibranti melodie eseguite con seghe musicali e stupende armonizzazioni vocali da fare invidia a un coro medievale di 100 elementi. Se qualche vostro amico li vedesse e poi, colto dall’entusiasmo, volesse parlarvene probabilmente esulterebbe dicendo: “Ho visto questi Hot Potato Syncopators e sono una vera bomba, sensazionali, assolutamente da non perdere!”
Dopo aver accettato la richiesta del rock’n’roll ad entrare nel suo mondo, i Camillas sono diventati famosissimi. Arrabbiati per essere diventati dei divi hanno sviluppato un senso di fastidio verso le parole che finiscono in “-tore”. Nella lista sono finiti imprenditori, sommozzatori, ristoratori, ripetitori, animatori, amministratori, coordinatori, educatori, pattinatori, ascoltatori, adulatori, liberatori, e i tu, che non finiscono in “-tore” come nemmeno tutti gli altri che terminano in “-tori” e non in mucche. Nonostante tutto ciò rimangono dei ragazzi di campagna legati alle sane abitudini, come quella dell’ospitalità e della techno-dance di paese. Infatti a ogni persona che passa a trovarli regalano del pane ballando come il peggiore ballerino della sagra della cipolla delle Marche; stanno infatti decidendo se metter su una disco-panetteria oppure no, con orari notturni che permetterebbero entrambi i lavori senza particolari sforzi. Intanto han deciso di passare a fare un salto a Lugano.

Straight from the golden era of the roaring twenties, these distinguished gentlemen present a musical revue of jazz and dance band melodies interspersed with visual gags, delightful humour and novelty moments. Since 1927 (actually not true) these cat-swinging jazz hounds have been delighting audiences with galloping ukulele, tea chest bass, virtuosic musical saw and charming harmony singing. Absolutely top-hole entertainment!
The ‘I Camillas’ were born in Pordenone, in 1964, and formed by Ruben Camillas (guitars, xylophone, voice) and Zagor Camillas, (keyboards, cymbal, voice); for 40 years they are inactive in the music scene, until, in 2004, something clicks, and the Rock’n’Roll scenario acclaims them… they quickly accept, and here they are.

Chi lo possiede ha la possibilità di spostarsi ovunque raccontando e cantando i personaggi e i suoni di un viaggio immaginario. Il nostro pilota, quasi “condannato” al movimento, vaga così nell’universo della musica raccontando storie e personaggi sotto forma di canzoni: il canto del cammelliere berbero, la composizione dodecafonica tedesca, il blues del Missisippi, la sanfona amazzonica, la chanson esistenzialista francese, il rap, l’opera di Pechino, il bebop, la bulerias spagnola, la danza rituale africana... dando vita ad una galleria di personaggi che cantando in gramelot ci raccontano la loro musica. Attraverso danze canti e spericolate evoluzioni melodico cinetiche Lullo Mosso si fa trasportare dal mototrabbasso monoruotato nelle sue imprevedibili derive nelle musiche del mondo. Jango Edwards ricevette il nome ufficiale di Stanley Ted Edwards alla nascita, terzo figlio della sua famiglia. Il padre figlio di immigranti inglesi e irlandesi; la madre di immigranti polacchi e russi. Dopo aver letto il libro “La quarta via” di Uspenskij la sua vita ebbe una svolta fondamentale, e si recò in Europa per dedicarsi all’arte del Clown. Da allora in poi dedicò la sua vita alla commedia e all’arte clownistica, non come lavoro ma come un vero e proprio stile di vita, una religione comica che lui stesso denominò “The Church of Grin”. Jango Edwards was officially named Stanley Ted Edwards at birth; the third child of the family. Jango’s father, Harold Senior, was the son of English and Irish immigrants, while his mother, Deloris was the daughter of Russian and Polish immigrants. In 1970, during his third European quest in search of remarkable men, he studied one, of many books written, concerning the esoteric sciences. It was title “The Fourth Way”, written by O.P. Ouspensky. When he returned from Europe something had changed. He sold his share of the business to his brother, abandoned all worldly belongings and returned to Europe to study the art of the clown. Since that change he has dedicated his life to the study of comedy and devoted himself to the art of clown; not a job but a life style, comic religion which he calls the “Church of Grin”.

King Automatic (FR) Music - One Man Band Me 17 King Automatic rappresenta il futuro del rock’n’roll. Originariamente batterista della band punk francese Thundercrack all’inizio del nuovo millennio decise di iniziare la carriera solista come one man band, sconvolgendone i canoni classici. Grazie all’elettronica, sempre rimanendo in una modalità da live performance, superò i limiti imposti dall’utilizzo del corpo umano e i trucchi meccanici ad esso legati; cominciò a introdurre loop di svariati strumenti come organo, chitarra, armonica e percussioni, così da raggiungere una complessità di livelli parificabile a un’intera orchestra. Nella musica di King Automatic si possono riscontrare rimandi al rocksteady jamaicano, al rythm’n’blues, al bebop, così come ai ritmi percussivi tipici dell’Africa occidentale, solo per citarne alcuni.” King Automatic represents the future of rock’n’roll. After a start as the drummer of the French punk band the Thundercrack, in the early years of the new Millennium King Automatic decided to engage in a soloist career as a one-man band. The use of electronics helped him overcome the limits imposed by human body and mechanical tricks; he started looping various instruments such as organ, guitars, accordion and percussions, reaching a complexity of levels comparable to that of an orchestra. In King Automatic’s music you’ll find references to Jamaican rocksteady, rhythm’n’blues, bebop as well as Western African percussion rhythms, just to name some. 32

In 2006, four freaks: a Japanese, a Frenchman, a Caribbean and a Spaniard, teamed up in London as King Salami & The Cumberland 3. Since their formation the band has brought song after song of their irresistible and excitable sounds seeded in the fifties and sixties as well as leaving multitudes eagerly dripping at their live shows.

Il 2010 è l’anno in cui i fratelli Brondi engono travolti da nuove idee artistiche e concezioni di vita che portano alla luce le prime intimissime canzoni, frutto di una delicata rivoluzione interiore e attitudinale. Dato il sempre presente orecchio e giudizio degli amici Andrea Filippi e Dario Brandini, i quali dividevano con i fratelli Brondi un appartamento in un quartiere popolare di Livorno, era inevitabile che la strettissima intimità dei quattro si trasformasse in una sola musica. Giusto qualche nottata rivelatoria strumenti alla mano, una manciata di concerti e un microfono in camera a consacrare i pezzi e il gruppo parte per l’estero. Nel 2011 sbarcano a Londra i Brondibros and the Outside rockers; una banda da caravan di sonorità circensi e melanconiche, un’attitudine anima prettamente punk nel corpo di quattro bohemien ottocenteschi. Non ci volle molto perchè i brondibros, fomentati da impulsi e colori del tutto nuovi, si facciano spazio nella folcloristica scena dell’arte di strada londinese. Nel 2012, dopo l’incontro con Andrea Appino producono un nuovo EP che li vedrà presentarsi con un nome nuovo, La maison orchestra.
Per descrivere Langhorne Slim and The Law si potrebbe cominciare da un’affermazione fatta da Langhorne parlando dell’ultimo disco The way we move: “Tutti noi amiamo i Wu-Tang Clan quanto Bowie o il pop psichedelico brasiliano”. Questo fa capire chiaramente con quale spirito la Band compone e suona le proprie canzoni. Dei pezzi che alcuni definiscono tra il Blues e il Folk ma che poi vengono suonati ed eseguiti con un spirito non davvero definibile dove a tratti ballano come Hippies sotto effetto di stupefacenti, in altri momenti urlano come Punks senza futuro e a volte coinvolgono usando modi di fare tipici dell’ Hip Hop. I loro concerti risultano dunque sempre un’esperienza unica dove niente è definito, tutto può succedere e soprattutto riescono a coinvolgere quasi tutti. Perlomeno quelli che hanno ancora voglia di vivere... Queste particolarità sono state anche percepite da David Letterman e Conan O’Brien che li hanno voluti durante i loro TV SHOWS e dove stati apprezzati e elogiati per il loro carisma e la fortissima personalità.
2010 is the year in which the Brondi brothers are overcome by new artistic ideas and life-changing concepts that generate their initial most intimate songs, resulting from a new inner turmoil and aptitude. Given the ever-present ear and judgment of friends Andrea and Dario Filippi Brandini, who shared a flat with the Brondi brothers in a popular district of Livorno, it was inevitable that the bond between the four was to become music-oriented. After just a few nights together with their instruments, improvised concerts and then a microphone to record their songs - the group leaves for a tour abroad. In 2011, they landed in London, named Brondibros and the Outside Rockers, they are a caravan band of circus and melancholic themes, four purely punk souls in the bodies of nineteenth-century bohemians. 34

Dal settembre 2011 Luca e Andrea, entrambi coinvolti in gruppi rock fanno di questa espressione uno stile di vita, una sorta di filosofia musicale che si aggrappa ad un genere altrettanto semplice come quello della country music. Una formazione essenziale che permette di offrire al mondo della musica la pura semplicità del suono di due chitarre sommata all’armonia di due voci; il tutto viene sorretto dal ritmo assiduo di un treno merci, che generato da una grancassa sostiene ostinatamente le loro canzoni. Make Plain non si propone di creare un nuovo genere musicale ma di trasmettere al pubblico il loro candore nel modo di far musica convincendo la gente che due chitarre e due voci bastano per arrivare ai cuori di molti. ‘Make Plain’- a simple English expression meaning ‘simplify’, is this duo’s name. Luca and Andrea joined forces in September 2011- merging their prior experiences in other rock bands. A soli 8 anni d’età Francisco era già membro della squadra locale di ginnastica acrobatica nel suo paese originario, il Chile. Anno dopo anno ha cominciato a vincere campionati regionali e nazionali e all’età di 18 anni ha deciso di aggiungere alla sua carriera atletica la disciplina del trampolino. In breve tempo è divenuto istruttore in questa disciplina prendendo anche parte a vari campionati. Più tardi si è specializzato nella disciplina acrobatica dell’Acro-Balance (Body to Body). Con Mauricio Villarroel, ha fondato la compagnia DUO TOBARICH, presentando un Acro-Balance Show. Per più di 13 anni ha lavorato come acrobata professionista e girando tutto il mondo con il DUO TOBARICH. Ha lavorato in Streets Festivals, teatri, eventi privati, fashion shows, galas… Un paio di anni fa è stato attratto dal nuovo sport Cyr Wheel, presentando la sua solo performance in tutto il mondo. At the age of 8, Francisco was already a memeber of the local acrobatic gymnastics team in his country, Chile. Year after year, he started winning regional and national championships. At 18 he decided to add the springboard to his specialties and in a short time he became an instructor in this discipline and participated in various championships. 37

Con una strumentazione tipica degli anni ’10 e ’20 del Novecento suonano il jazz più antico del mondo, che a suo tempo era chiamato ragtime, nato a New Orleans ed esploso dal blues e dai negro spirituals al tempo della segregazione razziale e delle Leggi Jim Crow. Al giorno d’oggi, questo stile unico è sempre più difficile da trovare e non può essere imparato in nessuna scuola o conservatorio. Deve essere studiato dalle vecchie registrazioni, dai libri e dalle biografie. Questa musica si adatta perfettamente a bar pieni di fumo e taverne, happening di swing-dance, dinnerparties e anche all’angolo della porta di casa tua. Using instruments dating back to 1910, 1920, their music is the very origins of Jazz, once known as Ragtime, born in black New Orleans, springing from the ‘Negro-Spirituals’ reacting to the terrible Jim Crow segregation laws. Nowadays this unique style is rare to find and is not taught in music schools or conservatories, it can be learnt through old recordings, biographies and books. It is a music which seems to fit into smoky bars and pubs, swing-dance dinner parties or wherever a sensitive crowd is gathered. 39

Lo spettacolo di strada di Peter Weyel, giocoliere, acrobata, contorsionista e attore tragicomico, gira da più di 20 anni per i festival di teatro di strada in tutta l´Europa. Apparentemente di pessimo umore, Peter Weyel presenta un fuoco d´artificio di spettacolo artistico. Il contatto diretto col pubblico, che si crea come per caso, si sviluppa in uno show travolgente, nel quale gli spettacolari trucchi vengono presentati casualmente e come imprevisti. Un piatto rotto, una tigre addestrata e biancheria intima all’ultima moda, portano lo spettatore a domandarsi se Peter Weyel sia pazzo o geniale. Le sue performance sono caustiche e disarmanti. Il suo spettacolo ironico e divertente, coinvolgente, irriverente e grottesco, provocatorio ma mai offensivo, capace di coinvolgere il pubblico e di “distruggerlo”a forza di risate. Sicuramente non é uno spettacolo ordinario, ma di sicuro è un’esibizione che diventa materia di discussione ad ogni festival e lascia ogni volta tanti spettatori entusiasti. Una sana follia, in un mondo che non si stupisce più di niente.
Paolino Paperino Band, founded in 1986, is formed by Huey, Dewey and Louie, with Tip and Tap on backing vocals and instruments. Uncle Mickey, angry about the kind of music produced by the punk-rock crazy kids, but above all by the fact that the band did not bear his name but was called Donald Duck, Mickey leaves town in late 1986 threatening to never return unless the kids sell the business to a third party. And so, demoralized Tip and Tap abandon the project resulting in the band breaking up. At that point, in 1987, Yana, a childhood friend of Goofy, learning of fate of the band asked Tip and Tap to let him take over the project with some of his friends in Duckburg and Goosetown. So Bez, Maso, then Thermos, then again Bez, Fox Trott (no, not him) and finally, also Yana join the band! The song-lyrics improved too, thanks to the help of common friend, Dementia. So it was that in 2012 these people decided to come back and play outside of the realm of Scrooge McDuck. 40
Peter Weyel’s street performance has been on the road for over 20 years now, recurring in most Street Theatre Festivals all over Europe. His approach is unusual, as he appears in a terrible temper, while arranging his explosive show. He creates an unusual, off-hand bond with his spectators drawing them into his roaring show, where some of his tricks seem to happen by pure chance. From a broken plate to a tamed tiger, or latest fashion in underwear, the performance elements keep people wondering whether Peter is out of his mind or pure genius! This show is far from being ordinary and is undoubtedly the object of discussion in every Festival where his lucky spectators are always enthusiastic.

Lo scopo principale di questo progetto è quello di intensificare la passione per il cinema d’animazione e di riscoprire l’esperienza del cinema, anche attraverso i piccoli (ma grandi) esperimenti “di lavoro audiovisivo” che sono i corti d’animazione. Puck shows animation movies, that kind of films we are not used to watch on TV. They select movies with high artistic content from all over the world. The “menu” is wideranging though selected. The ambition of this project is to enhance the love for animation movies and re-discover the movie experience also through small (but great) “audio-visual” try-outs such as short animated films.

Di cuori infranti, lavoretti fatti giusto per la sopravvivenza e solitudine sui trasporti pubblici in città ci racconta Craig Demordy nelle sue canzoni. Egli è la mente del gruppo Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, nome preso in prestito dalla cultura pop televisiva australiana. Il progetto è infatti tutto suo e viene affiancato poi nei live da altri musicisti. Cresciuto in Australia, nel quartiere di Para Vista, Adelaide, da cui prende il nome il titolo del primo album, si è poi trasferito negli Stati Uniti d’America dove ha continuato a portare avanti il divenire della band. Le sue canzoni sono ipnotiche, lo-fi e suonate in modo spontaneo, così come viene, ricordando un po’ la verve psichedelica dei Velvet Underground e degli Spacemen 3 mixate con la vena pop dei Go Betweens. Craig Demordy non è soltanto un musicista, ma è pure un artista visivo; il suo primo album infatti all’inizio è stato stampato in sole 200 copie tutte con copertine diverse e realizzate a mano dal musicista stesso.
Nel 2009 Shady and the Vamp, trio lucernese, registra tre canzoni e le fa recapitare in forma anonima al promoter locale. Subito dopo sono già in pista a chiudere il concerto dei The Masonics. Nei loro shows hanno condiviso il palco con leggende della scena garage e ricevuto ottimi riscontri da mostri sacri come Bruce Brand dei Thee Headcoats o Micky Hampshire dei Thee Milkshakes. Tim Warren, dopo aver sentito il loro 7 pollici Baby I’m gonna make you mine ne ha ordinate 100 copie per venderle al negozio della Crypt Records. Il garage punk che producono è quello che dev’essere fatto in questi anni ’10 del secondo millennio, amato dai ragazzi e adorato dalle ragazze. Le loro tracce miscelano momenti di furore e potenza pura ad altri dove i toni si addolciscono parecchio diventando colonna sonora per coppiette di giovani punk. Grazie alla loro musica sono in grado di mandare il pubblico in un’estasi generale che genera danze improvvisate senza nome.
Heartbreak, working crappy jobs to survive and the loneliness of public transport in a city, Craig Dermody knows no other way than heart-on-sleeve. Hailing from Australia but now living in New York, Dermody’s debut album under the moniker Scott and Charlene’s Wedding on Critical Heights is out now. ‘Para Vista Social Club’ (named for the Adelaide suburb in which Dermody grew up) is an off-the-cuff collection of real-life woes, each song spilling out like a soused diary entry. The album is sludgy, hypnotic and true, blending the psychedelic swagger of the Velvet Underground by way of Spacemen 3 with the underlying pop sensibility of the Go Betweens. Craig Dermody is not only a musician but a visual artist as well; as a matter of fact, his first album was originally pressed up to just 200 copies with each sleeve painted by Dermody himself.
In 2009 Rickey Rocket & Doc Julius recorded three songs and let them get anonymously into their local garage promoter and played their first concert as “closing-band” for the legendary Englishmen-band The Masonics and impressed Garage-punk fathers Bruce Headcoats Brand and Mickey Milkshakes Hampshire: “I don’t think they can keep that high energy very long”. Since then their killer-song repertoire is still growing ad infinitum. They brought Nobunny to cut his feet by shards of beer glasses, they let forget the audience on a dirty Saturday night that the main act The Magnetix was missing, King Automatic dreams since the two shows he shared with them of a whole band, they gave The Monsters the shivers at their record release party and they also showed Jack of Heart how to dress properly… Let’s go to see them!

I There Will Be Blood nascono nel 2009. Riccardo Giacomin e Davide Paccioretti sono due bassisti, che condividono la passione per la musica blues del Mississippi e per le atmosfere polverose e aride del West America. Da subito si presenta la necessità di una batteria, che sia potente e asciutta, secca e violenta, capace di sostenere i riff delle due chitarre. Mattia Castiglioni suona e studia batteria sin dal liceo e ha già condiviso il palco con Riccardo. L’idea di un gruppo con 2 chitarre e una batteria incuriosisce subito Mattia e dopo un paio di prove la band è formata. Il gruppo lavora assieme allo sviluppo dei testi che diventano storie sempre più complesse, oscillando fra il noir ed il western, attingendo a piene mani dall’horror e dall’iconografia del cinema di genere. Per dare un nome alla neonata formazione i tre prendono in prestito il titolo del film di Paul Thomas Anderson, in virtù delle atmosfere crude, ma evocative, della pellicola. Si delinea già l’idea di un concept album che racconti il cammino di uno sfortunato protagonista alla ricerca della propria redenzione. There Will Be Blood diventa frase simbolo della maledizione del personaggio, ovunque vada le sciagure lo seguono e il sangue scorrerà.
Marco Borghetti si è formato come clown alla “Scuola di Arti Circensi e Teatrali” di Milano, ha lavorato nello spettacolo “In Cima” con “Compagnia Brincadeira” di Bergamo e come assistente nella scuola del “Teatro dell’Armadillo”. Ha frequentato diversi stage di clownerie con maestri del calibro di Bano Ferrari, Philip Radice e Rita Pelusio. Attualmente collabora con l’associazione teatrale “2 etti e mezzo”, con “Teatro del Corvo”, fa parte dei saltimbanchi della Cascina Torchierasenzacqua. A Lugano porterà due spettacoli: il primo si chiama Equilibrium Tremens. In questo show si lasciano da parte le solite clave, monocicli e giocolieri per assistere ad un’esperienza innovativa dove delle comuni scope ci portano nel mondo assurdo di Philip Sutil, un gentiluomo magro e agile che ama le donne e ballare. L’elegante protagonista è affascinato dall’idea di equilibrio e vuole sfidare la forza di gravità, rubare la leggerezza per dividerla con il pubblico. Uno spettacolo di equilibrismi e clownerie dal clima surreale in cui si susseguono colpi di scena e trovate inaspettate. Il secondo si chiama Tobia (mini) Circus e dovrà essere guardato attraverso una lente d’ingrandimento!
The ‘There Will Be Blood’ were born in 2009. Riccardo Giacomin and Davide Paccioretti are two bass players sharing a passion for Mississippi delta blues and for the dusty and dry mood of the American West. From the start they felt they needed a powerful and dry drum capable of supporting the riffs of the two guitars. Mattia Castiglioni has played and studied the drum since high school and had already performed with Riccardo. Mattia was immediately fascinated by the idea of a band with two guitars and a drum and after a couple of rehearsals the band was formed. The group worked together on the lyrics that eventually developed into increasingly complex stories swinging between noir and western, drawing from horror and the movie iconography of this genre. The band took their name after a movie by Paul Thomas Anderson, inspired by the film’s crude, though evocative atmospheres. They already had in mind a concept album telling the story of an unlucky character seeking redemption. There Will Be Blood becomes the ‘symbol sentence’ of the main character. Wherever he goes, mishaps chase him and blood will be shed. 46
Marco Borghetti was trained as a clown at the “School of Circus and Theatre Arts “ in Milan, he worked in the show “ In Cima /On Top” with “ the “ Brincadeira Company”, Bergamo, and as assistant in the school of the “ Armadillo Theatre”. He attended several Training Courses in the art of clowning with masters such as Bano Ferrari, Philip Radice and Rita Pelusium. He currently works with the theatrical association “2 ounces and a half,” with “Teatro del Corvo/Raven Theatre” and forms part of the acrobatic team of Cascina Torchierasenzacqua. In Lugano he plans to stage two shows: the first, “Equilibrium Tremens” where he abandons his usual paraphernalia: clubs, unicycles and juggling acts, offering instead, an innovative performance where ordinary brooms lead us into the bizarre world of Philip Sutil, a lean and agile gentleman who loves women and dancing. The stylish protagonist is fascinated by the idea of stability and wants to challenge gravity, stealing weightlessness to share it with the spectators, in a surreal show of acrobatics and clowning, characterized by surprising and fantastic acts! The second performance, “Tobia (mini) Circus” astonishes the crowds who would really need a… magnifying glass! 47

Continuo ad ammassare vinile, e grazie anche a concitati back to back con altri fulminati discofili (Miss Clawdy, Maina Dj, Aldo+Sorty, Ariele, etc..) le playlist crescono e si attorcigliano come piante del Borneo. Escludendo il neomelodico e la musica andina, praticamente metto tutto”. “About 15 years ago in the Black Spot community center, I met 2 Technics plates and decided to bring some of my own records from home to listen to them on a great concert-type sound system The kids in the club started dancing and this is the origin of UFO DJ, a rib from my semi-clandestine “official” core business. I continue to store the old vinyl albums, and also thanks to frantic back to back with other electrocuted disco-fans (Miss Clawdy, Maina DJ Aldo + Sorty, Ariele, etc. ..) our playlists grow and intertwine like plants from the Borneo. Vox Blenii (CH) Music - Musica Popolare Gio 18
L’attività del gruppo Vox Blenii, attualmente composto da Remo Gandolfi, Luisa Poggi, Aurelio Beretta, Gianni Guidicelli e Francesco Toschini, ha avuto inizio nel 1983, senza particolari pretese, dalla comune passione per la musica popolare di un gruppo di amici. Da subito ci si è resi conto che esistevano nella nostra valle diversi canti, tramandati nella forma orale, che non venivano più cantati, con il rischio quindi della irrimediabile perdita di questo piccolo patrimonio della nostra cultura. Ha quindi avuto inizio un lavoro di ricerca, nelle valli superiori e in altre regioni del Ticino, che è diventata la linfa per l’esistenza e la continuità del gruppo. “L’attività di ricerca viene eseguita con momenti di incontro con persone anziane, da noi definiti informatori. Abbiamo così avuto modo di registrare canti e musiche popolari, eseguite nelle nostre vallate nel 1800 e nella prima metà del 1900. Abbiamo pure raccolto vecchie ballate arcaiche segnalate in Italia, e anche in Europa, già nel 1500 e arrivate fino a noi con le logiche varianti e trasformazioni”. The activity of the Vox Blenii group, presently formed by Remo Gandolfi, Luisa Poggi, Aurelio Beretta, Gianni Guidicelli and Francesco Toschin started without great pretences in 1983 by a group of friends sharing a passion for folk music. Since the beginning they remarked that their valley had a lot of songs handed down orally, but that nobody was singing any more, with the risk of loosing this little cultural heritage. The group started researching in the upper valleys and in other parts of Ticino and this research work eventually became the nourishment that kept the group alive. “The research activity is made of encounters with elderly people that we call “informants”. Thanks to them we were able to record folk songs and music that people used to sing in our valley in the 19th and 20th centuries. We also collected some old archaic ballads that were reported in Italy and other parts of Europe in the 16th century and handed down to us with the logical variations and changes”. 49

I Wildmen si formarono durante una rissa in un bar. A Giacomo Mancini (chitarra) serviva qualcuno che potesse aiutarlo a combattere in modo deciso, a parole e a fatti, contro i sermoni di alcuni patiti di melodia, i melomaniaci; all’improvviso apparve Matteo Vallicelli (batteria e voce) che apportò tutto il sostegno necessario. A bagarre terminata, e probabilmente vinta, il duo cominciò a suonare gli unici strumenti rimasti sul campo di battaglia e tutt’a d’un tratto si ritrovano super performanti a calcare la scene di diversi paesi. Diventarono così potenti che nei luoghi che videro il loro passaggio lasciarono soltanto orecchie fischianti, teste tramortite e natiche ancora intente a muoversi autonomamente. Decisero dunque di ritornare al bar natio e con sorpresa scoprirono che non c’era più nessuno da combattere, ma soltanto stuoli di fan impazziti. Ma questa è un’altra storia. Al Buskers arrivano più carichi che mai! Provate a fuggirli prima di ritrovarvi storditi, ma non sarà facile però, è quasi impossibile fuggire al loro richiamo selvaggio.
Gli X-Mary sono il gruppo di San Colombano (Lodi). Cristiano, Luca, Mattia e Luca credono nel pane e lo accompagnano con il vino. Talvolta in eccesso ma quasi mai è un problema. Hanno potenza ed energia da vendere, amore da regalare. Sono l’anello di congiunzione perfetto tra il punk hardcore dei Minutemen e il tropicalismo degli Os Mutantes passando per il trash pop sentimentale da ex-tossico anni ‘90 di Gatto Panceri e Luca Carboni. Hanno uno spirito zappiano che tende a fagocitare generi e parodizzarli risultando contemporaneamente divertenti e disperatamente neo-realistici. Si immedesimano senza alcun giudizio nè vergogna in tutto il peggio che le nostre periferie hanno da offrire, nei personaggi emarginati e marginali per riproporli evidenziando tutta l’umanità, lo squallore, il senso di ridicolo e la folle disperazione che è in ciascuno di noi. I loro live sono riti dionisiaci di compartecipazione e danza primitiva in cui risulta più che facile denudarsi d’ogni artifizio e struttura e ritrovarsi abbracciati a saltare, gridare e sorridersi. I loro live sono urgenti e pressochè imperdibili.
The Wildmen band was established during a fight in a bar. Giacomo Mancini (guitar) needed someone who could help him to fight effectively in word and deed, against the sermons of some melodic music and opera fans, when suddenly Matteo Vallicelli (drums and vocals) appeared bringing all necessary support. After the winning tussle the duo began to play the only ‘weapons’ left on the battlefield and all of a sudden, they find themselves performing superbly on the stages of several different countries. They became so powerful that in the venues where they perform, only whistling ears, heads and moving backsides remain! They decided, therefore, to return to Mancini’s original, native bar and were amazed to discover that there was no one left to fight, but only crowds of crazed fans. But that’s another story. Here they come, to the Buskers Festival, more loaded with energy than ever! Be ready to escape before you find yourself deafened and stunned, but it will not be easy: it is almost impossible to escape their wild call. 50
The X-Mary, formed by Cristiano, Luca, Mattia and Luca believe in bread and they take it with wine, sometimes in excess, but that’s hardly a problem. They radiate power and energy and have loads of love to give. They’re the perfect link between the hardcore punk of the Minutemen and Os Mutantes’ tropicalism, going through Gatto Panceri’s and Luca Carboni’s trash sentimental-pop of the 90ies. They tend to take over many different genres and make a parody out of them turning out to be funny and desperately neo-realistic at a time. With no wisdom and no shame, they identify themselves with all the worst our suburbs can offer, in outcast characters re-proposing them emphasizing their humanity, their dreariness, the sense of ridiculousness and the crazy desperation you can find in all of us. Their live concerts are sort of Dionysiac rites with sharing and primitive dances… not to be missed! 51
