We are in unprecedented times. The economic affect on the landscaping and horticulture industry of COVID-19 has been widely reported in recent weeks. The Royal Horticultural Society is deeply concerned about the threats facing the Ornamental Horticulture sector due to COVID-19 as is the Horticultural Trade Association (see page 9) who as I write are appealing to the government to implement a rescue package for the industry. Like many landscaping businesses the horticulture sector is made up of many family run-businesses and the RHS believes that if steps are not taken to support the growers that underpin one of Britain’s favourite past times - gardening - and the £24.2 billion industry, then many of these businesses will cease to exist. Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, says; “By the end of June, we estimate that the Ornamental Horticultural industry will face £687 million in lost sales which would balloon to a staggering £1.198 billion by December 2020. Behind each of these numbers is a family or business struggling to keep their passion for plants alive. Everyone at the RHS stands with them and calls on the UK Government to act now to save the Ornamental Horticulture industry. It is vital that we ensure that all of us can continue to enjoy gardening and the many benefits it brings.” It is not just the ornamental sector that is suffering though. The consequences of lost revenue streams, putting staff on furlough leave and the on-going debates across news and social media channels as to whether outdoor and construction work is permitted in these testing times is putting a strain across our whole landscaping community. Added to this is the uncertainty of when this will end. We must not forget however that there are many in our community who are here to support us. The charity Perennial is on constant stand by for anyone who is worried or has questions (page 10) and likewise our columnist Paula Warman offers advice on how to steady your business through these turbulent times. And below are further messages of support to you, our readers, from some of our industry organisations: Darren Taylor, British Association of Landscape Industries: “On behalf of the team at the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) we would like to recognise the hard work, determination, professionalism and community spirit shown by our members, and the wider industry, who are facing one of the greatest business and moral challenges they have ever faced with COVID-19. By coming together and supporting each other, we remain in a strong position in tackling this threat, whether a business has decided to remain closed or is continuing to work, we are all united in our common pursuit that we will get through this, together,

EDITOR'S LETTER

and will continue to deliver the highest level of service to clients across the nation.” Phil Tremayne, Association of Professional Landscapers General Manager “The announcement on the evening of March 23 from Boris Johnson shook the country. My phone started ringing at 6am the following morning and didn’t stop. Myself, the APL and the HTA are committed to supporting its members and the industry through these difficult times and are doing everything possible to help them emerge at the other side. We are here for you, #WeAreAPL” Geoff Webb, CEO Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) “The IOG’s primary concern is protecting the safety and wellbeing of anyone and everyone across the turf care sector. Adopting sensible precautions, keeping safe distances apart, and following Government guidance will enable us to return to the jobs and the industry we love in the shortest possible time frame.” “Many turf businesses have suspended operations during this unprecedented time, making responsible and difficult decisions. We stand by all Turf Care businesses, as well as grounds care staff.” Jim Coxton, CEO British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) “During this terrible period of economic and personal pressure, BIGGA staff have been inundated with calls and emails from our members who are asking for help from the association as they seek reassurances that things will turn out OK. “That’s what we’re here for and we’ve helped so many members answer questions, such as what work they’re able to do on the course, how they can stay safe and give advice as they make difficult decisions such as the choice to furlough staff. We’ve also expanded our online learning resources with the launch of the Continue to Learn Extra webinar series, helping members to continue their professional development throughout this period. As the strap line for our new weekly members’ newsletter states, ‘let’s get through this together.” Finally, to other stories this month in The Landscaper, which will hopefully be a welcome distraction from your daily newsfeeds on the virus. On page 18 we report on the ongoing debate on the use of Glyphosate in weed killers and on page 30 find out how gang mowers are making a comeback. Enjoy the read and stay safe

Horticulture in crisis The Coronavirus shutdown brings the ornamental horticultural industry to a crisis point and will severely impact the availability of British grown seasonal plants and flowers says the HTA • Due to the plunge in demand following the UK shut down, the value of lost plant sales in the UK will be £687 million by the end of June and if it continues £1.2 billion by the end of December • The perishability and seasonality of plants means that the sector potentially faces total stock write off unlike that of any other industry • Hundreds of UK growers face complete loss of income, cannot afford to take on the debt of a government loan and many may not even be eligible Family businesses up and down the country which form a major part of the UK’s gardening industry worth £1.4 billion could be destroyed following the UK coronavirus shutdown, claims the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA). Peak season has only a matter of weeks left for the horticulture sector which has formed an essential part of British life for over 350 years. It includes the ornamental crop sector, which grows bulbs, bedding plants, cut flowers, pot plants and stock mostly sold through garden centres, supermarkets, florists and DIY stores. Around 650 businesses across the UK produce ornamental crops, which contribute £1.4 billion in total to the country’s GDP annually and employ over 15,000 people directly and almost 30,000 indirectly. Many of these jobs form a vital lifeline for rural communities. The perishability and seasonality of plants means that an estimated £200 million of seasonal plants will have to be scrapped across the ornamental horticulture industry. Since Mother’s Day weekend when demand is typically high but people were beginning to self-isolate, sales dwindled dramatically, while lockdown means that there is unlikely to be any sales through to the May bank holiday, the busiest trading period of the year. HTA Chairman James Barnes says: “We have hit a perfect storm in the UK. The seasonality and perishability that is unique to our industry means that growers are potentially facing stock losses on an everrising scale as each day passes. Stock is one of the biggest components of asset value in the sector - stock write offs will destroy the balance sheets of many and make it impossible for them to continue. “We are calling for the government to work with the HTA, as the industry’s representative body, to come up with a financial support scheme to help those businesses which have had to scrap perishable stock and are facing a huge financial crisis. “For those that can stay in business, there are also significant longer term issues as growers may not have time to plant next year’s crop, leading to a two year supply hit on the whole industry including retail, which will severely impact the availability of British grown seasonal plants and flowers.” The HTA claims that while the government’s financial measures related to the agriculture and horticulture firms are welcome, in many cases they are not suitable for

Wholesale Horticultural nursery A & G Young, Perth

ornamental businesses. Investment in stock means that many nurseries do not have the reserves to take on the debt of a government loan, and often fall out of the scope of any support scheme due to EU state aid rules. The HTA estimates that a minimum of a third of UK ornamental producers may fail in a matter of weeks, leading to a loss of around £250m in direct GDP contribution to the UK economy annually. Allowing for a 2.4% per annum growth factor, the value of this lost contribution to GDP over five years would be £1.34 billion. Around 70% of bedding plant sales are made between March and the end of May. Many of these growers are facing huge difficulties and a near complete loss of income due to the coronavirus. The longer-term impact from the failure of the UK businesses will be significant. The wipe out of British commercial growers will increase the volume of imported plants, raising the risk of Britain being hit by plant pests and diseases - undermining efforts by the garden industry and the government to manage the nation’s biosecurity strategy. Alan Titchmarsh MBE adds to the HTA plea to the government: “Hundreds of nursery owners and growers are facing huge losses of plants and revenue simply because the stock they have spent many months nurturing for the spring market - their peak season - will have to be destroyed since garden centres and other outlets are closed for business. This means not only a loss of billions of pounds to the UK economy and of thousands of jobs but, more than this, it will decimate an industry that will be unable to recover for the foreseeable future. “I urge the government to put in place a rescue package which will enable British horticulture to survive. Without it, our gardens and open spaces - a vital source of solace and nutrition to those at home - will suffer irreparable damage.”

BASIS relaxes rules on CPD point collection following COVID-19 shutdown With much of the country working from home and most industry events cancelled, BASIS has taken the decision to relax its CPD requirements for Professional Register members. Stephen Jacob, BASIS CEO, explains that ordinarily members are annually required to collect a set number of CPD points before the points-year ends on 31 May. “Events are typically a focal point for collecting points, but with so many sadly not going ahead, we are extending the year-end period. “This allows points to be collected into the next points-year. The only stipulation is that the full requirement of points for the 2019/20 points-year and 2020/21 points year are fulfilled for both years, by 31 May 2021,” he says. For example, members holding the Certificate in Crop Protection are required to gain 40 CPD points annually. However, they will now need to collect 80 points over the two-year period. “This flexibility will enable our members to remain

on the Professional Register, while ensuring standards remain consistent, enabling members to continue to practice essential agronomy work,” says Stephen. Depending on your qualification and membership category, the required number of points will vary. Boost your knowledge remotely Despite opportunities being reduced, BASIS encourages members to seek CPD points remotely in order to stay up to date with industry innovation and regulatory changes. There are various options that can be completed at home, including reading technical publications or newsletters, as well as participating in online training sessions. A full reading list can and associated points can be found and on the BASIS website. Sharrocks expands Wigan based distributor of turf care equipment and groundscare machinery, F. R. Sharrock Limited, have acquired the assets of Jacobsen Direct UK in a deal which will also see responsibility for the distribution of Jacobsen machines and products in the Staffordshire, Shropshire & Derbyshire areas transfer to them. Commenting on the deal, Managing Director, James Sharrock, says: “Jacobsen Direct UK have done an outstanding job in building direct relationships with customers, including several of them in the design and testing phases of the new Jacobsen products being released to the UK market. “These new machines, incorporating knowledge gained in the utility sector with Ransomes, has produced some of the most innovatively engineered, well-built and robust machines I have seen in my 30 years in the industry. Having the design and manufacture based here in the UK is critical in the current climate and after seeing the factory’s vision for the future with TR, HR, HM & AR series it became a priority to align our distribution with that.” Speaking after the signing of the agreement, Will Carr, Sales Director for Ransomes Jacobsen says: “In 2014 we appointed Sharrocks as Ransomes Jacobsen Dealers

for Lancashire. Their commitment to outstanding customer service and unrivalled product support has seen their area of responsibility grow to cover most of the North and Midlands. “This deal is a logical step with Sharrocks well positioned to cover customers from their existing outlets. In 2017 they were awarded Ransomes Dealer of the Year, in 2018 where nominated for the industry award of Service Dealer of the Year and in 2019 were a finalist in Service Dealer’s Professional Turfcare Dealer of the Year award. This continual investment into infrastructure and staff to meet customers’ increasing demands is a sure sign of continued success.” Sales Director of F. R. Sharrock Limited, Steven Hanlon, adds: “This is an exciting development, re-uniting the Ransomes & Jacobsen brands across the area will only increase the service levels to both brand customers. Having machinery that is not only designed specifically for the UK but also manufactured here at the superb facility in Ipswich is a massive advantage in the sector. I am personally overseeing the re-integration across the area, with support from our internal teams and that of Bruce Alexander at the factory.”

Spurred into the Groundscare industry Little did Spurs fan Harley Coplen know that his visit to last year’s WorldSkills UK LIVE exhibition would culminate in him winning a tour of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the club’s training ground - and spur thoughts of him and a fellow student entering industry apprenticeships. Entering the prize draw on the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Young Board’s ‘careers in grounds management’ stand at the Birmingham NEC event in November with tutors and fellow students from the Robert Clack School of Science in Dagenham, Essex, Harley won the trip for him and a group of peers from more than 200 entries. "I am proud to say that I am a Spurs fan,” says Harley, “and the stadium is phenomenal. I was taken aback by

I have learned a lot about becoming a groundsman and the hard work involved, and I have decided that I would like to pursue an apprenticeship in the industry. “I would like to say a massive thank you to the IOG and everyone at the stadium and training ground for the experience, and for ensuring we got the most out of our trip." Jane Meaden, one of the tutors who accompanied the group, added: "A big thank you to the Spurs grounds staff who gave us an incredible tour and insight into the workings of the training ground and the stadium – where we saw how things worked pitch-side as well as ‘underground’ where the sliding pitch is stored. “We all had a great time and we now have a couple of future groundsmen in the making. A special thank you to Darren Baldwin, head of playing surfaces and estates at Tottenham Hotspur FC, for making the day so entertaining." WorldSkills UK LIVE at the NEC is one of a number of events attended by the IOG‘s Young Board to raise awareness of the industry as a career option, highlighting the sector’s inherent science and technology to also aid teachers in contextualising maths and science in the classroom. The Young Board strategy is based on developing promotional material and engaging with young people, guiding them towards a clear pathway into a rewarding career in grounds management. Young Board members give up their own time to organise and support Young IOG initiatives attending and supporting a range of career events through the year.

Record year for Isuzu Leading commercial vehicle manufacturer Isuzu Truck UK has revealed that 2019 was a record year for the company as it achieved an overall 23.5% increase in vehicle sales for the calendar year, confirming that it was, in fact, its best year ever, in terms of the total number of vehicle sales in the company’s 23 year history in the UK. Leading the company’s outstanding results were sales of the Isuzu 3.5 tonne Grafter range, which experienced a fantastic 47.7% growth in sales against the previous year, in a competitive marketplace that grew by just 13% in 2019. Further up the GVW range, sales of the company’s F series were boosted by the arrival of the new 13.5 tonne range, with total sales increasing by 47.5% over the equivalent 12 months in 2018. The company’s flagship range of 7.5 tonne rigid trucks, the backbone of the company for so many years, continued to defy market predictions by achieving a very steady and consistent level of sales throughout the year, and finished 2nd in the registration results for the year. Announcing details of this record-breaking performance, Richard Waterworth, head of sales at Isuzu Truck UK said, “Despite the uncertainties surrounding Brexit throughout the whole of 2019, together with the

ongoing challenges within the industry of matching supply with buoyant demand, we are really pleased with how our truck sales business performed in 2019. Without doubt, our ongoing investment in new products within the range has produced dividends with an exceptional performance at 3.5 tonne in particular, with the Grafter, whilst sales of the F series have started to show positive organic growth as we expand our vehicle park at this GVW.” Richard continues, “Over the past decade, we have grown Isuzu truck sales by over 82% across the board and 2019 was indeed a record-breaking best year ever, a testament to the broad product offering and our continually expanding dealer network.” Further information on the full range of Isuzu trucks from 3.5 tonne to 13.5 tonne can be viewed on the ITUK website on www.isuzutruck.co.uk

Go Green urges EGO manifesto Calling for a change to make battery-powered equipment the preferred choice over tools that emit noxious fumes and damaging noise pollution by 2025, EGO has launched a hard-hitting manifesto which highlights the dangers of petrol gardening equipment. As one of the world’s biggest outdoor power tool manufacturers, EGO is no stranger to the demands of the gardening and outdoor tools market. Pitting petrol against battery-powered tools, the company’s Challenge 2025 manifesto tackles the issues head-on in a bid to educate users to move away from petrol, issuing a rallying cry for like-minded organisations to join them and bring the issue in front of parliament. Steve Roskell, Marketing Director EMEA at EGO explains “There’s a baffling irony in the fact that the majority of the tools created to beautify our gardens are actually destroying our environment. Air pollution, noise pollution and sustainability are all clearly huge issues in today’s society. People are waking up to the dangers posed by petrol-guzzling cars. Yet, when it comes to gardening and landscaping equipment, the momentum for change simply doesn’t seem to be gathering pace in the same way. Petrol tools are known for being incredibly noisy, worryingly dirty and downright dangerous to our health – we’re keen to educate users that there is a viable, strong, powerful and cheaper long-term alternative.”

14

www.landscapermagazine.com

In years gone by, petrol was the only option for gardeners looking for cordless garden tools. EGOs commitment to research and development has helped to change that. The company is now able to produce garden tools which challenge preconceptions about battery life, power and charging time which might previously have put people off making the switch. EGO’s ARC Lithium battery offers unrivalled charging time and power, and an exceptional weight to energy ratio, making it among the top-performing portable batteries on the market and an ideal alternative to petrol equipment in the garden. Roskell continues, “Cities up and down the country are making moves to reduce and discourage car usage. Yet while councils are doing their utmost to hit new emissions targets and car manufacturers are evolving to help meet the demand for eco-friendly alternatives, the nation is busy pumping pollutants into our green spaces. Research suggests that operating a commercial leaf-blower for one hour emits as much smog-forming pollution as driving a 2.5-litre passenger car around 1100 miles! Something has to change - and we’re happy to lead that change by urging likeminded businesses to join us in our quest.” Find out more about EGO’s pledge and how you can be part of the movement to make the world of gardening greener, visit challenge2025.eu

Killing Weed Many UK grounds maintenance companies and county councils are re-examining the use of glyphosate herbicides and seeking non-chemical weed removal. This is happening amid the continuing debates on the effects of glyphosate on our health and manufacturers’ claims that abandoning glyphosate weedkiller in favour of alternatives will cost grounds care businesses and councils more. Greg Bedson reports

T

he debate surrounding the use of Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the the popular weedkiller Roundup, rages on. On one side of the fence are those who are lobbying against its use, with claims that it is a carcinogenic, which also harms insects and other wildlife, while those in favour of the herbcide argue that evidence suggests these findings remain inconclusive and that if used correctly, it is perfectly safe. Globally, glyphosate-based weedkillers are used more than any other herbicide with an estimated 6.1 billion kilos sprayed worldwide between 2005 and 2014. This could be set to change as governments introduce stricter legislations surrounding its use. Austria became the first EU member to ban glyphosate in July 2019. Restrictions are also in place in Italy, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Germany is also moving

towards a ban of the chemical by the end of 2023 amid concerns it is harming the insect population there. Cost effective solutions Putting environmental and health effects aside, the economic impact of using weed killers is to be considered. Glyphosate weedkillers are quick to apply, thus keeping the costly manual labour to a minimum - particularly important to grounds contractors and councils having to manage large areas effectively. A study carried out on behalf of Monsanto in 2016, before it was acquired by Bayer, found that glyphosate is by far the most cost effective solution for controlling weeds. In an economic analysis of highway median weed control, for example, glyphosate was 275% less expensive than alternative methods that included multiple mowing events and alternative herbicides.

Herbicides such as pelargonic acid will control small broadleaf weeds

The study also highlighted a key benefit of using glyphosate in managed turf areas including golf courses stating that “In recreational environments that include managed turf grass, glyphosate applications to dormant turf allow undesirable species of weeds and grasses to be controlled. This allows golf course managers to cost-effectively renovate fairways without the need for total replacement.” This has been backed up more recently by Oxford Economics who looked at the costs of the potential non-renewal of glyphosate to the UK economy in 2017. One of their reports was on councils, finding total removal of glyphosate could increase household Council Tax bills by £7.80 for each of the 27 million households in the UK. In addition, those who favour the use of glyphosate suggest that many of the alternative solutions are all faced with their limitations. Post-emergent herbicides such as pelargonic acid will control small broadleaf weeds, but will only partially damage perennial and large annual weeds for instance. Other naturally occurring broad-spectrum herbicides and acetic acidvinegar, all have similar limitations and thus aren’t necessarily a a commercially viable option. Flame weeding can be effective in certain hardscape situations, but cannot be used where flammable materials may be present and many weeds, grasses, perennials and sedges will rapidly re-grow after application. Chemical free alternative There is however a product on the market, which claims to be “the easiest, most effective and most cost competitive alternative” to glyphosate. Foamstream – a herbicide-free alternative for weed, moss and algae control that is gaining interest across the landscaping industry as well as those involved in cleaning public areas and buildings.

Leo de Montaignac, a co-founder of Weedingtech, the company behind Foamstream, explains that the product was developed in 2011, as they discovered “organisations of all types would increasingly want an alternative to traditional chemical herbicides. Whatever your position on the safety of traditional herbicides, we believed organisations would increasingly want to reduce their use of traditional herbicides in built up urban areas and would therefore need a highly effective, safe and cost competitive alternative.” Unlike many other products on the market, Foamstream can also be used to deep clean and sanitise outside spaces (such as those outside hospitals, bus shelters and in playgrounds), remove chewing gum, and remove some graffiti, which according to de Montaignac makes “the commercial case for Foamstream very compelling.” Foamstream works by cooking the weeds it covers. The foam and hot water solution is a 99.5% water and 0.5% foam blend of natural plant oils and sugars which insulate the hot water, allowing effective heat transfer from leaf to root, killing the plant and stopping heat being wasted to the atmosphere.

Foamstream can be used on all surfaces including artficial sports surfaces

It can be used in all weathers, which is favourable among contractors and municipalities needing to plan their labour force effectively and minimise downtime which, with other methods, may occur as a result of undesirable weather. The process works to reduce total weed growth in an area by not only killing the weed, but also sterilising surrounding seeds and spores. It can be used on all surfaces, hard, soft, porous artificial and historical. It is a safe and hazard-free for the operator and safe for use around people, animals, delicate ecosystems and waterways. Foamstream is fast gaining a large customer base. In the UK its customers include Id Verde, The Eden Project, Manchester City Council, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, Southern Water, and the Football Association. Naturally, those extolling the use of Glyphostate

are not going to sit back and loose the debate. Mark Buckingham, corporate engagement leader at Bayer, fights back suggesting “'Non chemical' does not necessarily equal 'green' or 'environmentally friendly' as the carbon footprint of heat and electricity based methods is significant and often ignored in the debate,” he says. “For example manufacturers of the electric “Root wave” method have said a one operator unit burns 15 litres of diesel fuel per day to generate the necessary electric current.” Buckingham also states that the vigorous testing Glyphosate is subject to, proves it is safe. “There is an extensive body of research on Glyphosate and Glyphosate-based herbicides, including more than 800 scientific studies and reviews submitted to U.S., European and other regulators in connection with the registration process, that confirm that Glyphosate and our Glyphosate-based formulated products can be used safely and are not carcinogenic.” Buckingham continues, “The EFSA, the U.S. EPA and other regulatory authorities around the world have comprehensively and routinely reviewed glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides for more than 40 years and their conclusions consistently support the safety of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides when used as directed.” “Weed control methods like hot water/foam are not subject to EU regulation, they fall outside the remit of pesticide product legislation (Article 2 of EU Reg 1107). We know glyphosate is low risk for earthworms and bees for example, because applicants are required to submit scientific studies on these species for EFSA and other regulators to assess.”

Virulent control Foamstream, a technique introduced to the landscaping industry by British based Weedingtech, offers herbicide-free solutions to controlling weeds, moss and algae and also extends its use to offer users deep clean and sanitisation functionality. As we witness the devastating outbreak of the Coronavirus across the world, it is reassuring to hear that Weedingtech has in the past commissioned independent studies to show the affect Foamstream can have as a virucidal agent. The product has already been approved for use as a biocide by the European Union and the Environmental Protection Agency. Although there is yet to be conclusive testing of Foamstream concerning Coronavirus (Covid-19), it is planned and Weedingtech is confident that the principle of applying extreme heat to the virus will help reduce its transmission. It is widely reported that the virus can survive on street furniture for up to 9 days, so a heat application to kill it in outside spaces such as bus stops, hospital congregation areas, supermarket car parks and parking machines, public space furniture, playgrounds and public exercise and sports facilities can only be a positive response.

Euroflor Urban Meadows From Scotland to the south east of England, Euroflor has been colouring the British countryside and providing food for pollinating insects

Dundee City Council After considering a number of options to reduce the cost of cutting grass, and seeing the results that other local authorities had achieved sowing Euroflor urban flower seed, Dundee City Council instigated a programme of sowings across the city. Initially, the programme began with sowing very small areas throughout the city but these were strategically placed to give as much visual effect as possible. The areas were watched with great interest to see the outcome and the results were very encouraging, to such an effect that now the city has very large displays of colour throughout, targeting the main arterial routes in and out of the city. Commenting on the programme, John Pratt, the council’s West Neighbourhood Services Area Manager said : “The mixtures selected were Flora Britannica, Contrast, Ground Cover and Chameleon and they have more than achieved the ‘wow’ factor the Council was looking for at these locations and to date they have received numerous emails, phone calls and letters from admirers. It has been a great success in Dundee to which we are going into our 3rd year with Euroflor and look to continue this into the future.”

Keele University Memorial Garden Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire The Memorial Garden was developed to manage the requests, which were coming into the University for memorial trees and to have one place for them to be sited - with so much expansion happening across campus it was becoming increasingly difficult to find a location. Jane Barker, Head of Grounds at Keele University commentated: “ The garden area selected was a field

It was agreed to add flowers to the garden and the mixture Sarah Bouquet from the Euroflor urban meadow range was selected to provide season long colour. The garden, now five years old, has proved very popular with visitors and used for teaching sessions and popular with dog walkers and students alike as a place to relax. North West Electricity – Transforming our spaces’ Whitehaven, West Cumbria Rigby Taylor’s Euroflor urban meadow flower seed mixes have played a key role in the success of Electricity North West’s ‘Transforming our Spaces’ project by revamping substations throughout the region with spectacular displays of colour from flower mixes that also attract a host of pollinators.

The colourful displays produced by the Euroflor seed mixes also drew laudatory comments from the local communities as well as council officials and MPs. For example, commenting on one site, Copeland MP Trudy Harrison said: “Electricity North West has planted what was previously grassland, requiring regular and costly maintenance, into a beautiful and environmentally beneficial wildflower oasis…This is an economic, environmental and social win, win, win project which should be replicated all over the UK.” Angie Thornton, Electricity North West’s Groundworks Delivery Manager, who is heading up the scheme, said: “We are all absolutely delighted with the results; the sites truly have been transformed from what used to be eyesores into beautifully vibrant areas for the local communities to take pride in and spaces for revitalising insects and wildlife. “Eight substations were initially targeted last year and working closely with Rigby Taylor, various Euroflor urban meadow flower mixes were selected. “These included Rainbow Perennials and Flora Britannica from Euroflor’s Project Pollin-8 range

specifically designed to attract pollinators while also delivering high visual impact. The displays lasted through the summer and into October and November. Electricity North West’s ‘Transforming our Spaces’ project will return this year with the continued support from Rigby Taylor. Hever Castle grounds and golf course Edenbridge, Kent As a result of the “fantastic success” of its displays of Rigby Taylor’s Euroflor urban meadow flower seed mixes, Kent-based stately home Hever Castle has expanded the total area planted this year to more than 5,000 square metres. The meadow flower project on the 400-acre estate, which includes an adjoining golf course, was initiated by Hever Castle Golf Club’s head greenkeeper Rob Peers to “encourage visitors to both the golf course and the estate to fully enjoy and be immersed by and engaged with the complete site”. The Euroflor seed mixes selected were Meadow Breeze, Rainbow Annuals, Bleuet de France (renamed Cornflowers) and Classic and were chosen in terms of being ‘best fit’ options in terms of colour and height, as well as in texture and form. The flower displays will last through the summer and into October/November. Rob continues: “The project has been an overwhelming success throughout the castle grounds and on areas of the golf course. In addition, I’ve never seen so many pollinating insects on the estate – a wonderful sight”.

LANDSCAPE CIRCLE

Managing your business through economic uncertainty We are certainly navigating some uncertain times at this moment, but it is not all doom and gloom. Paula Warman compiles some tips especially for you and your business to help get you through not only by surviving but thriving. It is a fact that during economic downturns many businesses grow, and new ones are started. Here are six top tips on navigating your way through this current situation: 1. Planning As the government announced new guidance on closing all non-essential businesses from 24th March, 2020 we will all have time on our hands. Use this extra time for forward planning and putting in place all the things you have been meaning to do, but have been too busy to do. 2. Innovation I expect, like me, you will have seen many businesses embracing the changes that have come from social distancing and self-isolation and brought their products and services online. Households across the country have embraced technology from homeschooling the kids, to gym workouts, parties, online conferences and events. Now is the time to see what you could be doing in your business to innovate and differentiate yourself. The way to thrive is to continue to develop and learn. Innovation is key - think outside the box and have some fun thinking about new services and products you could start offering. 3. Access government help Remember the key to reducing panic about cashflow is to start looking into the help the government have pledged to small businesses and the self-employed. This includes the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme which will support workers who are not working but are kept on the payroll. The government will pay 80% of your employees wages, rather than you having to make the difficult choide of laying them off. These workers will be designated as ‘furloughed’ and employers can choose to top up their salaries, but do not have to. This also applies if you are employees of your own limited company. For the self-employed they will also help towards earnings lost.

Other help includes a time to pay scheme for all VAT and tax owed since 20th March. There is a small business grant of £10,000 available (criteria apply) and the option of a business interruption loan with zero interest for 6 months. This is of great help and relief to many small businesses. Visit the government websites to find out exactly what you can access. 4. Cashflow All businesses should run a cashflow as part of good management practice, but in these uncertain times it is even more important to have a handle on your cashflow monitoring what you can and cannot afford. If you are struggling speak with any creditors you have, such as builders merchants. And if setting up payment plans set the repayments to what you can deliver on. It is in these uncertain economic times that you can strip back any unnecessary costs, truly reflect on the financial position in the business and improve it. 5. Managing staff As with looking at your financial position this is a good time to look at the current staffing of the business, see where the gaps are and reassess your staffing levels. If you plan to keep your staff then access the government grant for the 80% help towards their wages and perhaps suggest to them to take some holiday over the next few weeks so that when business resumes they will be there ready to work as you will need all hands-on deck. Don’t leave yourself short on staff when the economy picks back up. Now might be a good opportunity to look at your skill gaps and look at options for training when everyone it back at work. 6. Positivity Stories and opinions on social media can bring fear and anxiety to many. But there are so many things to feel positive and grateful for. Being at home means you get to spend more time with your family and can be a time to reflect on your business plans for the future. Use this time as me time. My final thoughts, this will not last forever! Things will return to normal and then the industry will boom, people will be spending money on their gardens and holidaying in the UK and supporting local businesses. So, for us in the landscaping industry it will be a good time to get new clients and bigger projects. It is an uncertain but also possibly a perfect time to make many changes in your life and business, spend time with your loved ones and be grateful for your health and everything you have in life. Stay strong, stay safe!

Lloyds Leda Gang mower

Ganging up on grass Some simple truths about gang mowers are marking them out for a resurgence in popularity, GREG RHODES reports

T

raditional gang mowers may not be the sexiest machines ever to cut grass but they have the drop on today’s high-tech kit in some key aspects, suppliers maintain. Delivering a simple, effective mowing method for large areas and when budgets are tight, gangs can be overlooked in the rush for today’s highly specified, computer controlled machinery, they contend. But their functional simplicity is giving public and private sector buyers alike pause for thought, especially when maintenance costs of high capital value kit can really take a bite out of budgets. “Cylinder mowing with simple land wheel-driven gang mowers has proved a preferred option for grounds professionals since the early 1900s,” says Richard Taylor, Managing Director of turf machinery specialist RT Machinery, which supplies own-brand trailed ground driven units (Tow N Mow Sportster and Junior gang mowers) as well as leading lines from Ransomes (TG4650, 3400 and TR320 triple gang mower) and Lloyds & Co of Letchworth (Leda).

30

www.landscapermagazine.com

Low power requirement, simple configuration and easy adjustment and maintenance equates to an effective method of cutting and recycling grass, he adds. Today’s professional models deliver two basic cutting widths. An 8 inch cylinder meets sports, fine lawn and parkland duties, while a 10 inch diameter treats more lush growth such as golf course semirough and country parks. Gang mowers are geared to work on good level ground and even rolling surfaces, Richard continues. “Overall unit weight is important, with frames stout enough to hold cylinders tight to the surface to maintain traction and drive cutting units, even at maximum rotation.” Maintenance is critical if operators are to enjoy optimum efficiency from gang mowers. “A clean machine is an easy one to work on, encouraging regular greasing, lubrication checks and adjustments,” says Richard. Replacement components and spare parts are readily available for well-known brands, he adds.

FEATURE any moisture, clean out behind scrapers and ensure nothing is wrapped around cylinder spindles, then spray or brush over with a lubricant or oil-based fluid. Check each mower is disengaged to allow uncoupling and storage. Gang mowers can be 100% recyclable. “Buyers should consider the whole lifecycle, to recreate traditional technology with a modern spin,” says Richard. In the right conditions, he continues, gangs’ fineness of clip (reducing need for scarifying and discouraging thatch build-up) broad distribution and recycling potential makes them serious contenders in today’s tech environment.

RTM Sportster gang mower set of three trailed gangs

“They are relatively straightforward to work on too. Only cylinder grinding falls outside the basic engineer or mechanical capability. “If units are adjusted and set correctly, that’s required only every three to five years, depending on workload and regular greasing.” So his message is: if owners and operators ignore the basic, regular checks, gangs “will cost you no different to any machine or vehicle”. Keep gangs clean and store away dry on a hard, level surface, Richard advises. Brush or blow off each mower and frames to remove clippings and

Gaining ground Gang mowers are gaining favour as their innate qualities impress buyers as budgets tighten. “Local authorities have been looking at costs and reducing cutting frequency and they are attracted to gangs’ lower running costs,” notes Mark Harrison, Director of specialist turf machinery supplier Ryetec. “Also, other types of machine can present challenges,” Mark adds. “Rotaries for example can leave large clumps of grass lying on the surface when grass is cut long or when wet, and that can lead to big yellow patches underneath.” Since 1994, Ryetec have been the UK agent for machine manufacturer Peruzzo and one of their most popular brands in the UK is the Triflex gang flail mower.

A used gang mower cutting unit ready for service and the points of adjustment, setting and grease top-up shown

Designed for large area long or short grass at uniform cutting widths between 4.2m and 5m, the Triflex has a heavyweight flail that can deliver a finish in wet or dry conditions to compare with cylinders or rotaries “at minimal running costs”, Mark claims. “Cutting height of each deck is controlled by a fullwidth rear roller and a single front castor wheel,” Mark explains. The decks can float in horizontal and vertical planes to allow “minimal risk of scalping” on undulating ground. ”The Triflex is a more forgiving tool that can handle the rough with the smooth,” he adds. Gangs give another benefit for operators. “If a cylinder mower hits a stone, it could put the whole machine out of action, requiring a regrind by a specialist. A flail hitting an obstruction might take the edge off only that one flail, needing only a hand-held angle grinder to make good the repair. The driver could do it in five minutes. The 5m Triflex carries 72

flails so the unit is not incapacitated.” Of course the rise in cutting capacity of gang flail mowers needs beefier pulling power, Mark stresses. “Most councils were using 60-70Hp tractors to haul earlier gangs - flail mowers like the Triflex require 80100Hp units. Leda of the pack Lloyds & Co. Letchworth are dab hands with gang mowers, manufacturing and supplying Leda units over many years. “Progression is sometimes about looking back to look forward,” says Managing Director Clive Nottingham. When it’s on trend to have the latest tech, we may forget that time-honoured maxim that “the best solutions to common problems are the most simple”, he adds. Gang mowers are a case in point, he believes.

FEATURE

Triflex mower - designed to maintain large areas of long or short grass

“It’s about the advancement of existing products and methods with sound rationale that have withstood the test of time.” The benefits of gangs merit a long look, Clive argues. “Affordability and lifetime cost. They have a lower purchase price and overall running cost than other grass cutting machinery and can last far longer because of their simplicity and robust build quality.”If properly maintained, gang mowers deliver a fine finish and can last 15-20 years and longer, he adds. “Even after that time, they can be reconditioned and remanufactured to bring them back into good order.” The triple gangs Lloyds supplied to Durham University many years ago are still mowing the Maiden Castle and racecourse grounds, Clive notes. “Gang mowing offers up to 60% savings in fuel costs over ride-on, hydraulic and PTO-powered equipment,” he adds. Gang mowers’ reliability and resilience also give them the edge, he argues. “Accidental damage to a cutting unit may take it out of service but work can still continue with the remaining units. And, as many operators already own or run tractors, it makes financial sense for them to haul gangs to optimise efficiency. When budgets are tight, machine servicing costs – typically 5-10% - come under closer scrutiny, says Clive. “With good basic mechanical knowledge”, customers themselves can service and maintain the

Leda gang mowers Lloyds, “with no special tools or equipment.” Given gangs’ residual value, operators can partexchange theirs for ex-demonstration and fully remanufactured units, ready for OEMs such as Lloyds to recycle them once reconditioned. The circular economy in action and particularly handy for grassroots clubs. Gangs’ green credentials will appeal to many buyers, with no emissions, or specialist disposal of oils and hydraulic fluids to worry about. Claiming they are nothing less than “the most environmentally-friendly method of cutting larger grassed,” Clive adds that “being made almost entirely of metal, only 10-20% of a gang mower ends up as scrap.” Clive counters the argument ‘that gang mowers don’t cut as well in the wet and can clog up’ by stressing that this only occurs if they are old and have not been adjusted or serviced. “Sharp, well-set gang mowers will perform well in any setting,” states Clive. Reinforcing that sentiment, Richard adds: “I would challenge anyone to prove that there is a better, more cost-effective way to clip, present and recycle grass clippings over open larger presentable areas with a good operator using a well set up and maintained gang mower on a summer’s day. “The cut and finish in the right conditions deliver best value and finish.”

Staying in… for now Greg Bedson reflects on how the Coronavirus is affecting his work and how he is adapting to life indoors What a strange year this is turning out to be! If you recall I wrote last month’s column stuck in the office as the rain, which appeared to be never-ending, stopped play. Now as I write it is a glorious spring day, the sunshine streams through the window, birds are in full song and the leaves are emerging on the deciduous trees – and yet once again I am forced to stay indoors. This time for very different reasons.

The main priority is of course to protect the most vulnerable. I am willing to stay home for as long as is necessary, knowing my actions will play a small part in helping this pandemic disappear. The effects of the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, are like nothing else in living memory. Most of the world has taken a united front to defeat this ‘invisible enemy’, as our Prime Minister describes it. On a personal note, I have been in isolation due to a family member developing symptoms. Fortunately all seems to be well for us, but my heart goes out to all those who are affected by this horrible disease - and of course to our key workers who are working tirelessly to keep the impact to a minimum. As for the landscaping sector, I feel our industry is in limbo. Many suppliers are temporarily closed, some aspects of work will surely flout the 2 metre rule and then there is the issue of workers travelling in the same van and sharing tools and equipment. The main priority is of course to protect the most vulnerable. I am willing to stay home for as long as is necessary, knowing my actions will play a small part in helping this pandemic disappear. Of concern however is the grey areas. Should we be going in to work if we can't adhere to the distancing rules? Some argue that much of our work is not classed as essential (I know there are of course exceptions), while others within the industry are still carrying on virtually as normal. Which heightens the

dilemma further - some clients may feel aggrieved that we are not turning up, whereas others may see it as irresponsible and flouting the rules if we do. I’m conscious that this is an ever-changing and unprecedented situation and therefore this column may be well out of date by the time it goes to print (in some ways I hope it is), but having spoken to colleagues within the industry, I know I am not alone in my concerns. Maybe, we as an industry, need to stand together and as one agree that our work is not essential. In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter if we don’t mow Mrs Brown’s lawn for another couple of weeks, or lay that new patio for Clive and Judith? We all need to learn to adapt in these times and maybe, some of these changes could be positive and lasting. We have some amazing technology at our disposal – now's the time to start using it to our advantage. This week, I have managed to provide three estimates for projects without leaving the house. Using video calls, photographs and measurements taken by the client and/or Google Earth has enabled me to gather virtually all of the information required to put together an estimate. Of course there are limitations with this way of working and sometimes a site visit is necessary so that you can carry out an investigative dig or check some of the finer details, however all of the clients I have spoken with understand this and have accepted that prices are subject to a site survey. On a positive note I've seen this approach has saved on fuel going to client's houses and has meant that you don't have to work so tightly around a client's schedules.

This week, I have managed to provide three estimates for projects without leaving the house. Using video calls, photographs and measurements taken by the client and/or Google Earth... The only question that remains is when will we be able to get started on any of this new work quoted on? Unfortunately no one can really answer this, so for now I suggest if you can, you spend some quality time with the family, enjoy your own outdoor space and remember those who really are carrying out essential duties in these arduous times.

HTA launches a ‘million planting moments’ Looking ahead to when we are hopefullly the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Horticultureal Trades Association (HTA) is encouraging the nation to get planting this Autumn with its ‘million planting moments’ campaign. Taking place between 19-27 September 2020 the aim of the week is to encourage everyone young and old, expert and novice to take the opportunity to plant at the traditional ‘natural’ planting time of year. The week culminates in Million Planting Moments Day on Sunday 27 September.

The campaign, which takes place during the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH), builds on the momentum around tree planting in the UK, recognising that all plants make a positive contribution to mitigating the impact of climate change. It provides an opportunity to highlight to consumers the importance of plant health. Suggestions on the best types of plant to choose depend on factors such as soil, site and size of space are available, with consumers encouraged to visit their local garden centre for expert knowledge and advice, depending on their specific needs. HTA President Boyd Douglas-Davies comments: “By creating a ‘#MillionPlantingMoments’ we are highlighting the huge contribution that plants make to our health and

wellbeing, environment and communities. The beauty of the campaign is that anyone can take part whether they have access to a community space, garden, patio or window box and can plant anything from trees and shrubs to perennials and bedding. “Taking place in nature’s natural time for planting we encourage consumers to visit their local garden centre to find out the best plants for their space and share their #MillionPlantingMoments on social media.” In support of the campaign Defra’s Chief Plant Health Officer, Nicola Spence, comments: “Our world is much smaller than it once was and increasing globalisation and environmental change have huge implications for the health of the world’s plants. So it’s great to see that the HTA is encouraging safe sourcing and planting to ensure that the UK’s future plants and trees are kept pest and disease-free, through its ‘million planting moments’ campaign. “From considering soil, site and space, the HTA’s advice will prove invaluable for budding gardeners homing healthy plants nationwide.” Look out for further details about the campaign over the coming weeks. There will be an opportunity for individuals to contribute photos of their planting moments using #MillionPlantingMoments, #IYPH2020 and planting moments using #MillionPlantingMoments, #IYPH2020 and #PlantHealth

Key facts on plants and planting: ● One medium-sized shrub can capture 30 diesel cars’ worth of pollution each year. ● The cooling effect of green space in urban areas was reported to reduce average temperatures in the UK’s major city regions by 0.63 to 0.880C. ● Over three years, a single mature oak tree produces enough oxygen to keep you alive for a year. ● Research has shown that every 10% increase in exposure to green spaces translates into an improvement in health equivalent to being 5 years younger. ● Scents can connect people directly to nature and the environment, having a significant positive effect on emotions and memory recall. ● Digging burns an average of 186 calories per 30 minutes – that is more than playing Badminton, which burns 167 calories per 30 minutes.

POWER TOOLS

Outdoor power

Manufacturer of outdoor equipment and power tools, Makita UK recently invited dealers and members of the trade press to Walton Hall, Warwickshire to test drive their latest line of cordless power equipment with an impressive range of new garden machinery tools, specifically aimed at the outdoor sector Building upon its vast experience in cordless technology, Makita has added to its line up that now offers professionals over 70 cordless outdoor power equipment (OPE) tools within its innovative LXT battery platform. The tools are designed to provide solutions against petrol products to offer lower noise and vibration levels, reduced maintenance and zero emissions, whilst providing the levels of power and torque professionals need to tackle the many outdoor tasks and applications they face on a day to day basis. New products include: Brushless Lawn Mowers The lawn mower range includes one new aluminium deck and three new steel deck models. Powered by two 18V Li-ion batteries in series to supply energy to the powerful 36V DC motor drive system, these machines can be fitted with four batteries to give contractors extended cutting time. With a manual battery selection, simply flick the switch to change over to the second pair of batteries when the initial set has discharged. All Twin 18V, the new models include an electric brake and a large grass box with a useful level indicator, as well as a built-in mulching option and weatherproof cover. By adding to the existing three New aluminium DLM533 deck brushless mower

models in the range, professionals can choose the model to suit the scale of their lawn groundwork, from smaller domestic lawns right up to areas of 2,300m2. Brushless Hedge Trimmers Ideal for tackling mature growth, thick branches and hedges, two new single sided hedge trimmers offer improved and safer handling, thanks to the single blade, lightweight design and two-handed start up. The 18V DUH604S and DUH754S both feature three speed settings, a reverse switch to clear the blades if branches get jammed and automatic shut off if the

POWER TOOLS machine is not operated for 60 seconds after being turned on. The blade profile has been designed for smother cutting, whilst low vibration and high power allows operators to work efficiently, even on large hedges, with less fatigue. DUR369A brushcutter makes light work

Brushless Linetrimmers and Brush Cutters Providing access to varied shrubland and undergrowth, the new Twin 18V Linetrimmer (DUR369L) and Brush Cutter (DUR369A) models provide an excellent alternative to manoeuvring heavy and cumbersome machinery. Both operate using a 1kW motor - equivalent to a 33cc 2-stroke engine machine and include automatic torque drive technology (ADT), which adjusts the RPM according to the density of the weeds, plus active feedback sensing technology (AFT) which shuts down the tool to protect the user if the rotation speed suddenly slows down. Alternatively, the new UR101CZ and UR201CZ models are equivalent to the DUR369 products, however these are designed for use with Makita’s backpack battery rather than connecting individual batteries to the machines, making these models better suited for contractors who require longer run-times for larger areas. Portable Battery Pack The PDC01 battery backpack provides ‘portable fuel’ enabling operators to continue to work and reducing the frequency required to replace batteries. The backpack neatly holds four 18V LXT batteries for use with the 18V adaptor or twin 18V adaptors that attach to the tools, in order to create a portable power supply - which is ideal for use with high-drain products. Unlike other backpack battery systems where the entire unit needs to be recharged, the Makita system uses interchangeable 18V batteries, enabling operators to double or quadruple the run time of their work depending on the tool being used. Simply replace the batteries when the first sets are empty and then carry on working whilst recharging your initial battery sets! Commenting on the new releases, Mark Earles, Business Development Manager for garden machinery at Makita said: “We are delighted to offer outdoor

professionals even more choice with this exciting new line-up. All the new releases are powered by Makita’s Lithium-ion LXT battery technology, the biggest battery platform in the world. With over 200 products within this system, operators can seamlessly interchange between projects and equipment, so whatever challenge the great outdoors presents, professionals can be confident that using Makita will get the job done.” All products are available to order. Cleaner performance for power tools Arboricultural companies, large and small, are discovering the benefits of switching their fuel over to Aspen Alkylate Petrol. The UK’s largest tree contractors, Gristwood and Toms, together with Merseyside-based grounds and landscapers, Kingsman Gardens, have both reaped the rewards of using Aspen fuel – reducing harmful fumes and costly machinery servicing and repairs. Gristwood and Toms started using Aspen 2 in their fleet of chainsaws 18 months ago. “With a team of 220 people and nearly 200 vehicles on our books, it’s important that we’re taking steps where we can, to improve our green credentials,” explains Director Dave Gristwood. “Aspen came in to demonstrate the product and how, by removing all of the nasty chemicals, the fuel burns much cleaner than regular unleaded. Our chainsaws run well, now without the fumes which is much better health-wise for the guys using them.” For Kevin Prince, Owner of Kingsman Gardens, the difference he has noticed in the longevity of his machinery has been massive since he switched to Aspen 2 two years ago. “Because of the scope and variety of work we do, some items on our machinery fleet will sit around unused for a few months – sometimes even longer. Because the Aspen fuel doesn’t deteriorate like regular petrol would do, and keeps the inner workings so much cleaner, it means

we’ve had machines that are unused for over a year that still start up first time.” Kevin uses Aspen 2 in all of his 2-stroke equipment, including chainsaws, strimmers and hedgecutters together with a small amount of the Aspen 4 mix in some of his 4-stroke hover mowers. Being virtually free from sulphur, benzene and solvents, Aspen alkylate petrol burns cleaner than regular petrol making it safer for operators, machinery and the environment.

Isuzu is at the top of the tree with Elite Long-standing operator of Isuzu trucks, Ipswich based Elite Tree Services has recently introduced a new bespoke built Isuzu Grafter 3.5 tonne arb tipper truck into its vehicle fleet, which will enable two and three men teams to go on jobs completely self-contained with all the equipment needed to complete the job. The Isuzu Grafter N35.125 features a specially designed arb tipper box body and is capable of towing either a chipper or a trailer with a stump grinder. The tipper box body has been designed to be completely enclosed so that no stray chippings or debris can escape from the body when the Elite operatives are engaged in roadside work.

42

www.landscapermagazine.com

Uniquely, the Isuzu also has three individual toolboxes. The tipper body itself houses a full-length toolbox down one side, within the body, that houses any long equipment, whilst externally there is a cab mounted toolbox, which holds all the various ropes and road signs. The third toolbox is mounted underneath the body and is where all the heavy chains are kept. “With the demands of tree surgery, having the right kind of specialist equipment is important for the tree surgeons. This Isuzu Grafter really is a jack of all trades as it gives us complete self-sufficiency on so many of our jobs, irrespective of whether it’s a two- or three-man requirement. As this bespoke design is based on many years’ experience, we now have this incredibly practical truck, which we know will give us the reliability and flexibility that has long been associated with the Isuzu brand,” says Paul Thomas, director of Elite Tree Services. Tony Long, network business manager, Isuzu Truck UK adds: “Since the launch of the Grafter Green in 2018, the arb truck sector has become a major success story for our 3.5 tonne truck range. Having said that, it’s also reassuring to be able to work closely with a long term Isuzu operator such as Elite Tree Services who have benefited from 2006 from the proven on-the-road performance that has long been associated with the Isuzu truck range.”

Electric performance in a top handle chainsaw Feast your eyes on the new DCS-2500T the first batterypowered top handle chainsaw from ECHO. Meeting the needs of the arborist and tree care professionals who use top handle chainsaws daily for pruning and arboriculture, this light weight machine packs professional power with exceptional acceleration. In fact, the 50V Lithium-ion battery generates power and cutting performance equivalent to ECHO’s best-selling CS-2511TES petrol chainsaw; and it does it with low vibration and without the noise and emissions, making it perfect for use in noise-sensitive areas. Well balanced and ergonomically designed for manoeuvrability and precision, the DCS-2500T is the latest addition to ECHO’s 50V battery series and is part of their X Series of ‘best in class’ products. The superior, dependable tools are specifically designed for professionals who rely on their tools day in and day out. Often leading in terms of power and performance, X Series products are tested in the most extreme conditions, says the manufacturer, to ensure flawless operation. The DCS-2500T has beneficial user-friendly features that include the patented Quick Draw harness ring for hooking and unhooking the chainsaw in one movement. There’s a drop prevention lanyard hook for off ground safety and this is a truly easy to operate machine with an anti-slip handle grip and patented thumb rest adding to

operator comfort. There’s a side-access chain tensioner to allow quick chain adjustments. The driving force, the brushless motor, will ensure long-lasting maintenance-free operation, while the casing has an IPX4 rating for water resistance so the chainsaw is showerproof for protection against the elements. The all-important oil adjustment is situated on the top of the saw so it’s easily adjusted, while filling is equally simple with the flip lever cap opening. Last but not least is the internal air filter which prevents dust from entering the main board and motor. The chainsaw is due for release in mid 2020.

Woodland management made easy with GreenMech chipper A woodland management programme for Wildernesse Golf Club in Sevenoaks, Kent has been transformed thanks to a CM220TMP woodchipper by GreenMech. The new 9” machine has significantly improved the productivity for course manager Mark Todd and his team who tend an area of classified ancient woodland, Chance Wood, at the very heart of the course. The scale of the task led Mark to look for an upgrade to the club's existing machinery at the end of 2019. “I spoke with our local dealer Burden Bros who suggested we upgrade from a 6” to a 9” machine and demonstrated the GreenMech CM220TMP woodchipper. You could see straight away how it was going to be so much more effective at dealing with the large quantities of material we have to process.” The course woodland predominantly consists of beech,

birch and oak, however it is the holly in the understory of the canopy that causes a real issue. “Some areas are smothered in it and the awkwardly shaped branches used to be really difficult to get into our old chipper unless you spent time snedding all the branches off,” explains Mark. “The CM220TMP’s large hopper means we can take down holly trees up to 20-foot-tall and get them straight into the chipper – reducing handling and stopping backlogs. Thinning this out improves not only the aesthetic and playability qualities, it also allows extra air and light to get down to the playing surfaces.” “Being tractor mounted means we can take the chipper wherever it is needed, with the chip we produce dispersed in the woodland, used in some of the decorative beds or given to the members for use in their gardens. One of the really great things is GreenMech’s round disc blade chipping technology. Not only does it process more efficiently but when they blunt you simply turn them to the next sharp edge which means that, compared to traditional straight blades, you get three times the life out of each set.”

BLECavator improves artifical installations Dales Sports Surfaces has recently invested in a BLECavator from Charterhouse Turf to cope with the increasing number of clubs looking to convert over to artificial greens. Their new BV145 works hand-in-hand with other equipment from the BLEC stable to speed up and improve the accuracy of installing the foundation layers. “We’re getting an ever-growing number of enquiries from clubs who are wanting to install artificial turf because of the costs involved with maintaining natural turf, and a lack of skilled greenkeepers to look after them,” explains Managing Director of Dales Sports Surfaces, Richard Steadman. “Knowing we needed to invest in a couple of pieces of machinery to make this work easier and more efficient, I spoke with Charterhouse Turf Machinery who suggested we look at the BLECavator.” The BLECavator is a one-pass ground preparator – levelling, raking and rolling simultaneously. The BV145 model has a 1.5m working width and cultivates the ground to depths of up to 18cm, using adjustable tines to lift and screen stones and debris. Burying the undesirable material and raking the ground level, the soil is then compacted by the rear-mounted roller ready for the next stage of preparations. Richard purchased the BLECavator, together with a Redexim Turf Stripper through their local dealer,

FG Adamson & Son. The pair of new machines were recently put to use on a conversion project at Malmesbury Bowls Club in Wiltshire. “The first thing we did was remove the existing surface with the Turf Stripper before we installed the new drainage system. We then used a BLEC Laser Grader to grade the base level and followed up with the BLECavator to apply a stone/cement layer. Finally, we re-graded the base to a level tolerance ready for installation of the green.” Richard concludes: “With the increase in conversion projects we’re seeing, we now have a fleet of machines that work really well together to speed up the process and improve the accuracy and quality of the finish.”

GKB Sandfiller exceeds expectations The GKB sandfiller is proving to be the perfect partner for sports surface specialist Marc Kerr Limited. Established in 2007 the company works across golf to bowling greens offering pre and end of season renovations. Using the GKB Sandfiller which combines scarifying, removal and sand-filling in just one simple operation Marc Kerr, Director at Marc Kerr LTD comments, “I used to run two sand injection gardens and still do but switching to the Sandfiller has made a similar

process more efficient and safer.” A great benefit to this machine is that unlike other working methods which require six or more people, the working method of the GKB Sandfiller can be executed by just one person. Marc adds “The GKB Sandfiller has also added to huge reductions in manpower, less weather dependents and better working depths.” In order to lift the removed material, the machine features a slitting rotor with carbide scarifying blades as well as an attachment to the blades which creates wind. With blade thicknesses available ranging from 2-4mm and the centres fixed at 40mm, the GKB Sandfiller encompasses versatility. The featured scarifying blades will remove the thatch until it reaches a 4cm depth. Following this, the scarified and removed material is immediately distributed to a sideways-tipping container. Praising GKB Machines for their fantastic customer service. Marc adds “GKB’s equipment is strong and trusted within the industry and as a contractor you don’t worry about breakdowns which you might do with other manufacturers equipment.

Supersized packs from Syngenta ICL has announced that Syngenta’s Primo Maxx II growth regulator and Ryder turf pigment are now available in larger sized packs. Turf managers now have the option of purchasing Primo Maxx II in 20-litre drums and Ryder in 5-litre bottles. Both are significant increases on the former sized containers and are set to provide better turf at better value. The new pack sizes mean that Primo Maxx II is now available in 5 litre, 10 litre and 20 litre packs whilst Ryder is available in 1 litre and 5 litre bottles. Primo Maxx II is a growth regulator that works by obstructing the grass plant’s production of gibberellic acid, which is accountable for vertical growth. Where Primo Maxx II excels and other growth regulators fall short, Primo Maxx II creates the obstruction late in the growth cycle, which serves to stop cell elongation and keep shoots and stems short. Launched in 2019, Ryder has gained rave reviews from users with many praising its ability to instantly enhance the colour and visual appearance of turf. The innovative technology behind Ryder also protects leaves

from the harmful effects of excessive sunlight and instead manages light more effectively. Furthermore, the intensity of colour produced by Ryder can be selected through adjustments to application rate, frequency and integrated turf management programmes.

Turfgrass demo goes down a storm

More than 100 greenkeepers, groundsmen and grounds maintenance contractors from across Scotland attended an amenity demonstration day at Falkirk Tryst Golf Club on 11th March, with those who braved the day’s stormy weather able to see some of the latest golf and sports pitch specific machinery and turf renovation equipment in action. Featuring a range of machinery demonstrations from a wide selection of industry-leading suppliers, the maiden ‘Scottish Amenity Demonstration Day’ was jointly organised by amenity seed company Germinal GB, Allgrass Turfcare and Campey Turf Care Systems. “Despite the weather’s best ef for ts to disrupt proceedings, the inaugural Scottish Amenity Demonstration Day was a great success,” explains Alan Thomson, Technical Sales Representative for Germinal in Scotland. “As a group of likeminded suppliers, we recognised that there are no amenity specific events in Scotland where greenkeepers, groundsmen and tur f care professionals can talk to multiple manufacturers and suppliers in a single location. “We therefore worked together to organise the

free-to-attend event to give visitors the chance to talk freely with a range of manufacturers about the latest golf and sports-specific grass seed mixtures and to see a selection of cutting-edge turf maintenance machinery – including the latest electrical and emissions-free equipment – in action.” John Rushforth of Allgrass Turfcare extended a special thank you to Falkirk Tryst Golf Club for hosting the event: “Head greenkeeper, Gary McCandless and his team worked miracles to ensure that, despite heavily waterlogged ground conditions and torrential rain in the days prior to the event, the majority of demonstrations were still able to go ahead. “Feedback from the event has been extremely positive,” added Richard Heywood of Campey Turf Care. “It was genuinely very gratifying to see so many faces from within the Scottish amenity sector coming together to learn about new developments within the industry and to try out the latest amenityspecific kit. This type of event is as much about networking on a semi-social basis as it is about promoting the latest machinery, and we look forward to organising similar open days in the future.”
