Editor’s letter No doubt it is a theme we will see more of at SALTEX at the end of the month. The show at the NEC, Birmingham (October 31- November 1) continues to attract some of the sector’s biggest names and visitors can expect to see an impressive line up of innovative pitch, ground care, park and estate management ideas. Drawing visitors from around the globe, it’s a chance for exhibitors to showcase their latest products to an increasingly sophisticated audience. Well worth a visit if you want to keep ahead of your game. We’ll certainly be there to report on all the goings on. So If we don’t see you, we look forwarding to meeting again in our next issue.

It has been an exciting few weeks here at The Landscaper as we hone our new editorial campaign and formulate plans to expand the magazine’s coverage and reach. Certainly our reception as the new publishers couldn’t have been more welcoming and it has been a joy to discover what a lovely bunch of people you are in the world of landscaping! One of my first ventures out was Landscape 2018 Show at Battersea, in September. Buzzing with exhibitors and visitors alike, it was a great opportunity to network and meet many new faces - the ideal opportunity to learn more about the many intricacies of the industry and glean a few ideas that merit coverage in future issues. Clearly one of the challenges is training, recruitment and staff retention. How do we inspire young people to choose a career in landscaping? Organizations like the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) are addressing the issue, and there are a number of apprenticeship schemes and college courses on offer but the challenge is to get employers to connect with these industry bodies and promote careers. I certainly think this is something we at The Landscaper can help with and it is our intention to make vocational training the focus of one of our 2019 campaigns.

Bespoke trailers

British manufacturer SCH was recently delighted to receive an order for 12 bespoke trailers from Ransomes Jacobsen Ltd. Ransomes has supplied equipment for events such as championship golf courses and the World Cup, and SCH is thrilled to be a supplier of equipment to a company that demands such high standards.

The trailers will be used for transporting mowers from the greenkeepers compound to the greens, with each trailer able to take two mowers at once. To ensure the mowers arrive without any damage, the trailers incorporate custom-built holding clamps to keep the mowers held down so that they do not move while in transit. The wide-profile wheels give the trailer stability over rough or wet ground, as well as spreading the weight over a large surface area to reduce track marks on the grass. The solid chassis is of welded steel construction with the floor and ramp made from weather-resistant wooden boards coated in a high-grip matt rubber, ensuring a long life span for the trailers. The design of the trailers adds storage facilities for grass collection boxes and brushes, and an adjustable hitch is fitted so that vehicles of varying height may tow the trailers. SCH designs and manufactures its products in Britain, and offers great flexibility for customers requesting bespoke variation to standard products. New sales manager Andrew Pledger is ICL Turf & Landscape’s new Technical Area Sales Manager, covering the South East of England including Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent and East London. A previous Toro Student Greenkeeper of the year in 2002, Andrew studied at the University of Massachusetts before embarking on several greenkeeping roles, which included Deputy Course Manager at The Wildernesse Club, and the Deputy Superintendent at The Hertfordshire. He then spent six years as

Head Greenkeeper at Frinton Golf Club before moving to Chelmsford Golf Club as Course Manager, a position he held for seven years. In addition to his Golf Course Manager roles, Andrew has also enjoyed many years of being a volunteer groundsman at West Ham Utd FC. Transforming lives Green-tech has donated in excess of eight pallets of horticulture pots, trays and hanging basket accessories to adult-education charity, Horticap. Horticap, based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and whose Patron is Alan Titchmarsh MBE VMH DL, provides adults with learning and other disabilities with training in horticulture, allied crafts and rural skills. It aims to help students extend their knowledge and skills through structured training using professionally qualified staff and volunteers. Horticap’s large garden, which includes a wildlife and bird spotting area, is open to the public. Phil Airey, Assistant Manager at Horticap said: “A big big thank you to Green-tech for the donation of pots and trays. This will save us lots of money. You are stars. We are just so delighted that Green-tech has been able to support us and donate products that are so essential for us. Our students will use all of these items which will ultimately grow plants for our beautiful garden or to sell in the shop which helps fund us.” Green-tech’s Marketing Manager Lizzy Rose added: “We were so impressed with the set-up at Horticap and what they achieve, we were delighted to be able to help them. Offshoots and swards Johnsons Lawn Seed’s Shady Place and Luxury Lawn have been improved with the addition of Johnsons’ innovative Seedbooster treatment, a two-in-one seed coating. Used in the professional turf market and available to the amateur gardener, Seedbooster is applied to each seed, creating a parcel of fast- and slow-release nitrogen-based fertiliser, resulting in more offshoots and a denser grass sward. Seedbooster contains 10% nitrogen, so the lawn gets the nourishment at the root where it needs it the most. Greenkeepers’ best practice The Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) has released a revised set of best practice learning materials for all levels of student greenkeepers, available to learners in the Level 2 Greenkeeping qualification, and to all golf clubs as best practice. Prepared by industry specialists and based upon best principles and practices for golf course maintenance and management, the copyright materials are divided into eight chapters, ranging from health and safety, golf course preparation and maintenance to preparing a tractor with attachments. The 327-page publication is available to purchase in digital format through the GTC’s shop for £150: www.the-gtc.co.uk/shop/ All GTC Quality Approved Centres will receive a copy of the Learning Materials, for use with all sports turf students on greenkeeping courses. Graduates’ trainee programme Hereford-based Wyevale Nurseries is inviting applications for its two-year Graduate Trainee Programme, for people interested in nursery production and other elements of the business including finance, IT, sales or marketing. Invasive weeds The Property Care Association’s 2018 International Invasive Weed Conference is at The Slate, University of Warwick, on 22 November, with speakers from across the public and private sector, including legal, utilities and local authorities, finance and mortgaging. Three key themes are: identification, assessment and response. The focus will include the emerging issue of plants such as buddleia and bamboo. Representatives from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat, the Environment Agency and CABI will chair the sessions. ‘Identification,’ the first session of the day, includes input from Ben Aston, of Yorkshire Water, who discusses the most challenging weeds for the water industry, and Dr Johan van Valkenburg, who will present an overview of the invasive, non-native weeds of concern in those countries just over the Channel from us and their potential to impact on the UK. The ‘assessment’ session includes information on mortgaging and finance from Robert Stevens of Nationwide, and health and safety best practice from Colin Liptrot of the Environment Agency. Finally, our ‘response’ to these issues includes Rodger Burnett of Charles Lyndon outlining the Court of Appeal’s take on matters, and details of land remediation tax relief and Japanese knotweed being covered by Alun Oliver of E3 Consulting.

The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) and ICL have revealed the recipients of the third ICL Continue to Learn scholarship, which offers five BIGGA members the opportunity to attend the Continue to Learn education programme with more than 250 hours of education. The scholarship, worth approximately £500, comprises three night’s hotel accommodation and a 15-hour education bundle. Grass plant seeker Johnsons Lawn Seed’s latest research into grass growing techniques unearthed the benefits of an ingredient that specifically seeks out grass plants. Super Smart Lawn Feed is a new product with a unique ingredient not found in any other feed. Azospirillum is a beneficial bacteria with billions of spores that lie dormant in the granules until dissolved and applied above ground to the grass. Attracted to the lawn roots, Azospirillum fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere and gives targeted nutrition to the grass plants. Also, the Azospirillum bacteria excretes plant hormones, cytokinin and vitamins while targeting nutrition to the grass plants. Azospirillum is efficient for growth, meaning a smaller application is needed. Leaching of the nutrients in the soil is virtually eliminated as they are instead immediately targeted directly to the plant root, so the lawn gets the nourishment where it needs it the most. The Lawn Feed also contains a soluble Mycorrhizal fungi to encourage strong root systems in existing grass. With the abilty to increase the root surface by up to 150 times,

the Mycorrhizal fungi, working with Azospirillium, forms a symbiotic relationship with the grass plants, forming an ecosystem underneath the soil. The grass plants become connected through the mycorrhizal networksharing water, nitrogen, phosphorous and mineral elements, resulting in a healthier lawn. Seaweed extracts also act as a natural tonic for the lawn, as well as a soil conditioner, leaving grass looking thick and green. The feed is 100% organic andused in farming as an alternative to artificial chemical fertilisers, and is also safe to use around children, pets and wildlife. New performance standards For highly efficient irrigation of both large and smaller areas in residential and commercial applications, Rain Bird now offers a full range of R-VAN rotary adjustable, full circle and strip nozzles. Coupled with fast installation and simple maintenance, R-VAN nozzles set new standards in performance, with just nine models required for full 45-360 degree coverage and ranges from 2.4 to 7.3 metres. All R-VAN nozzles can be quickly hand adjusted for arc and radius. By pushing down and turning the nozzle cap, the arc can be increased by up to 270 degrees and by turning the radius adjustment dial clockwise, the throw distance is increased without needing to use a separate adjustment tool. With these two actions, areas of any shape can be effectively irrigated. The precipitation rate of the R-VAN nozzles is matched with the Rain Bird 5000 series rotors. Long-distance watering is effectively increased to up to 10.7 metres within the same zone. Precipatation rates are also matched across all the different types of R-VAN nozzles, making irrigation design layouts and zoning much easier. Producing gentle rotating streams of water, R-VAN nozzles provide uniform coverage with lower precipitation rates. This lessens the risk of wasteful run-off that can lead to ground erosion. R-VAN nozzles can require up to 33% shorter run-times, providing significant water savings and making them ideal for applications where there are time restrictions

on irrigation cycles. With larger droplets and thicker streams of water, R-VAN nozzles have high wind resistance and can be used in windier conditions without misting. Irrigation is kept within the target zone and not wasted on surrounding hardscapes and other areas. R-VAN nozzles have been specifically designed to let dirt and debris pass through, but if a nozzle sticks, a simple twist ensures easy debris flushing. There is no need to replace the nozzle in the event of clogging. Overall, R-VAN nozzles are claimed to be up to 30 percent more efficient than alternative makes and are compatible with all Rain Bird spray bodies, risers and adapters. Established in 1933, J Parker’s is a family-run plant and bulb company in the UK. BALI Landscape Construction Diploma BALI, through its nationwide GoLandscape initiative, has supported BALI Training Provider member Capel Manor College in developing and launching a brand new Advanced Diploma in Landscape Construction (Level 3).

Endorsed by employers within the industry, the course offers a unique opportunity for students to develop both technical and business skills. Capel Manor College developed the course based on the recent GoLandscape skills survey that was circulated to all BALI members earlier this year. The course has been designed based on that feedback, with input directly from landscape businesses, many of whom are BALI members. The course will also incorporate the BALI Chalk Fund sponsored additional tickets. Modules will include living walls, water management/ SUDS, surveying and construction drawings, business practice and project management, paving, timber and brickwork, water features and the use of plants in landscaping schemes and show garden builds.

Pitch perfect Kubota UK’s B Series is proving to a key player for Melksham Town FC after the Wiltshire club secured promotion to the Evo-Stik Southern League.

The club recently completed its first full season at its new £7.3m Oakfields facility in the South West of England, following a grant from the Premier League and FA Facilities Fund. Helping to keep the 16 pitches in perfect condition all year round is Kubota’s B3150, supplied by local independent Kubota groundcare machinery dealer Lister Wilder. Melksham Town FC’s Chairman Darren Perrin said: “To ensure the club continues to be a centre of excellence in the South West, it’s absolutely vital we utilise the best groundcare equipment on the market. This is where our Kubota B3150 compact tractor comes into its own. We need quality pitches for our players to train on as this is crucial in preparation for match days. With the Kubota, we get exactly that. By saving an hour cut time per pitch, with an average cut cycle of at least twice a week, we are saving over 30 hours of time each week. Boost for Garden Leisure Market A new report from MTW Research on the garden furniture and barbecues market found sales in the garden leisure market have grown 15% in recent years, with sales set to top £1 billion by 2020. The research found the number of gardens is growing more rapidly in 2018, boosting demand for the garden furniture and barbecues market. The number of UK gardens is set to increase by 500,000 in the next few years according to MTW, prompting healthy optimism for garden suppliers and retailers. However, while the number of gardens grows, MTW highlight the ongoing trend of smaller gardens in 2018. According to the report, the average size of gardens has declined by 8.1% in the last 6 years, though the decline is slowing in 2018. The report identifies a number of opportunities for garden furniture and barbecue suppliers, such as the continued growth in the size of patios underpinning demand for more permanent cooking and dining ‘zones’ in the garden. MTW identify the growth in more permanent zoning of the garden as a key trend in the garden market in 2018 which

is significantly impacting on consumer specification and buying behaviour. MTW found that a well-designed, zoned garden with cooking and entertaining space can add up to 15% on the value of a property as well as rapidly decrease the time taken to sell a home. Discussing some of the garden market trends, MTW’s director Mark Waddy said: “There is growing pricing pressure for some sectors of the garden leisure market, but there has also been a steady rise in more knowledgeable and discerning consumers with healthy budgets in 2018. This trend is enabling garden furniture or barbecue suppliers and retailers to protect margins and grow sales through innovative, design complementary products and enhanced ‘turn-key’ services such as ‘zone area’ design, availability & fast supply, installation and post sales support.” The report also identifies the ‘second patio’ sector as a key growth opportunity in 2018 and beyond, with ‘empty nesters’ increasingly opting to have additional, separate entertaining areas in their gardens. The growth in the number of second patios is providing opportunities for


NEWS selling higher value ‘second sets’ of garden furniture and barbecues to existing customers, often a much more profitable proposition than finding new customers. MTW also point to the growth in hard and soft landscaping supporting growth for higher value furniture and barbecues. Research and science John Watson, Course Manager at Downfield Golf Club in Dundee, has used ICL products throughout his 20-year greenkeeping career and recently singled out H2Pro TriSmart and Greenmaster Pro-Lite Invigorator for particular praise. “I’ve been a greenkeeper for 20 years and have used ICL products throughout my career. All three of my main areas (greens, tees and fairways) are covered by ICL products.” John firstly focussed on his greens and has noticed a significant improvement since applying H2Pro TriSmart wetting agent: “My greens have always performed well, but I am of the mindset there is always room for improvement. I started using TriSmart and it has worked really well for us. The greens are not drying out as quickly and even the greens that are prone to drying out because of nearby tree roots are retaining moisture better. We go with our first application in April and continue to apply it on a monthly basis until September at 10L/ha. We try to get it on early because the greens tend to dry out in April when the spring winds start coming in.” For his tees and aprons, John has reported fantastic results from using Greenmaster Pro-Lite Invigorator 4-0-8+2MgO+4fe. Over recent years, Greenmaster Pro-Lite Invigorator has gained a reputation as an outstanding micro-granular fertilizer for high quality, fine turf nutrition and ICL launched Greenmaster Pro-Lite Invigorator Plus 4-0-14+2MgO+8Fe in 2017. The new formulation features a higher iron and potassium content than the original Invigorator. “We used the original Invigorator last year at the start of April after aeration work and we saw a very good recovery, good colour and it lasted for over six weeks which I was extremely happy with. This year, we had a prolonged

spell of rain through the winter, so I decided to go with an application of Invigorator Plus as it has a higher iron content and because we had a bit of moss on the tees. In the past I haven’t used granular feeds on my tees but the more experience that I have gained, the more I have learnt about the course and what it needs. With the added iron content, we saw a good bit of colour within a couple of days and then we saw the growth within a week or so. I actually decided to apply it to the greens as well.” The new Invigorator Plus contains the mineral polyhalite, which has been found to bring enhanced turf colour and quality responses. It is a complex crystal product discovered at a depth of 1300 metres below the earth’s surface under the North Sea and is mined at ICL’s own mine in Cleveland, a site which John has visited. “I went down the mine recently, and it is great to be in a position where I have seen how it goes from a raw product through to a final product suitable for an end user. I’ve also been over to the laboratory in Holland and after seeing both of these I would say that it gives you confidence in just how good the ICL products are. Horticulture on national curriculum? An expert in horticulture is calling for the subject to be included on the national curriculum. Alex Brotherton, contract manager at national green-services provider Glendale, says incorporating the topic into primary and secondary education would result in benefits for children. From facilitating learning and encouraging active lifestyles to understanding responsibility, gardening improves confidence, supports emotional intelligence and boosts social skills. According to the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), only 1.5 million of the 5.5 million primary school pupils in the UK have the opportunity take part in school gardening, and primary schools have only 33 pence per pupil to spend on school gardening. The Royal Horticultural Society has also campaigned for gardening to be used as a teaching tool. Alex says elements of the subject could be incorporated into those already on the curriculum, such as maths, science and geography, and could also help to raise early awareness of career opportunities in the industry. He said: “Horticulture offers a vast range of benefits to people of all ages, ability and level of interest, and it’s never too late to get involved. But stimulating and nurturing an interest in the topic from an early age has huge advantages that shouldn’t be overlooked. We know the countless benefits gardening has to offer, from improving overall health and reducing stress levels, to helping bring communities together through activities such as communal planting projects.

“Incorporating this into education would be highly beneficial to pupils. It may be perceived there isn’t the time to dedicate weekly classes entirely to horticulture, but it could easily be combined with subjects already being taught in schools. For example, a maths lesson doesn’t always have to take place indoors with textbooks. Get children outside, explore measurements and calculations in relation to digging out a flowerbed, or planning planting schemes. Gardening can also be used to teach children about sustainability and understanding where food comes from, which in turn can promote healthy eating and living. “An insight into environmental issues, such as climate change, and what can be done to tackle them can only be a good thing too. Wildlife conservation is another hugely important matter that children should be aware of; being mindful of the declining population of species such as hedgehogs and ensuring habitats are protected. School gardens are also a fantastic way to capture the interest and imagination of little ones, while increasing physical activity. Reports have shown that spending time outdoors has an incredibly positive impact on children’s health and taking children outside to get closer to nature would have countless benefits.”

Landscape Construction Diploma More than 60 members of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) have won a BALI National Landscape Award, with some members successful in more than one category. This year’s Awards, run in-house by the BALI team at Landscape House, sees 101 National Awards made by the adjudication panel, chaired by Greg Allen, landscape consultant and former senior lecturer in landscape studies at Writtle College. Following a summer of visiting every entry, Greg and his team of judges – John Melmoe, Richard Barnard, Jason Lock, Robin Templar Williams, Steve Roberts, Andrew Legg and Mick Callahan – met at BALI Landscape House in late August for the adjudication process that selects the award-winning schemes. Judges Madge Moore, Peter Jennins OBE and Nick Coslett also put forward their recommendations for the Affiliate Exceptional Service awards and the Employer Excellence awards, which were subsequently considered by the wider panel. Deliberations over the 127 entries took three days, at the end of which the list of winners was confirmed.

Reflecting on this year’s process, Greg said: “What a difference this year’s magnificent summer has made to the judges’ task of visiting the BALI Awards entries, albeit a real challenge for BALI members faced with drought conditions in many parts of the country. Keeping their schemes looking at their best for judging has certainly called on every ounce of their horticultural expertise! “We have been delighted with the achievements of BALI contractors and designers this year and, as always, the hardest task has been to stick to our stringent criteria and only reward real excellence across the board. In previous years this approach has inevitably resulted in disappointment for a percentage of members who, although justly proud of their schemes, had yet to achieve the exemplary standard required by the BALI Awards. This year, however, 77 per cent of entries receive an award, which speaks volumes for the incredibly high standards BALI members are now achieving. GaLaBau visitor increase The 23rd GaLaBau in Nuremberg welcomed 72,005 trade visitors – 12.3% more than in 2016 – keen to learn about the latest products and trends for designing, building and maintaining green spaces. Stefan Dittrich, Director Exhibition GaLaBau, is more than satisfied: “We have four inspiring days behind us, with consistently packed halls, valuable business discussions and numerous highlights from the supporting programme. The mood was absolutely fantastic. As far as I’m concerned, GaLaBau 2018 was a resounding success!” At GaLaBau 2018, the 1,253 companies from 37 countries were spread over 14 exhibition halls for the first time. The honorary sponsor of GaLaBau, the Bundesverband Garten, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau e. V. (BGL), Bad Honnef, also had words of praise for the event. “Once again, GaLaBau exceeded our expectations in 2018,” says Lutze von Wurmb, President of the Bundesverbandes Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau e. The findings of the visitor poll, which is carried out by an independent market research institute, once again confirmed the high calibre of visitors, most of whom came from specialist companies in the gardening and landscaping segment. There was also an increase in visitors from specialist bodies and public institutions. In 2018, GaLaBau also attracted more visitors involved in the construction,

maintenance and management of golf courses. Many landscape architects and suppliers of motorised equipment were also drawn to Nuremberg for the event. More than half of visitors hold a leading position at their companies, with as many as 81% in decision-making roles. The 1,253 exhibitors travelled from 37 countries to Nuremberg. The German contingent (945) was followed by exhibitors from the Netherlands (66), Italy (50), Austria (31), Belgium (18), Poland (15), France (14), Denmark (14) and the Czech Republic (13). Overall, every fourth company came from outside Germany. The exhibition area booked by German companies increased by 3%, while international exhibitors ordered as much as 12% more space. Once again, the core area at GaLaBau was the machinery segment, with half of all exhibitors presenting maintenance and construction machines. Around 35% of exhibitors came from the segments building materials, natural stone, pavers, patio coverings, plants, seeds and similar. And about 15% of exhibitors covered special areas like playground equipment, street furniture or golf course construction and maintenance. The exhibitors couldn’t have given their industry event better marks: 93% rated the overall success of their trade fair participation positively and reached their most important target groups. Almost all forged new business contacts, while 90% expect substantial follow-on business from the event. Of the companies polled, 92% have already decided that they will be exhibiting again at GaLaBau 2020. SALTEX 2018 the exhibition shaped by the industry The 73rd annual SALTEX exhibition throws open its doors at the NEC, Birmingham once again. The two day show (31 October -1 November) offers visitors a comprehensive product display and an opportunity to glean expert advice through the free-to-attend extensive education programme of CPD-accredited seminars and from other knowledge-gaining opportunities through other unique show features. This year, over 300 exhibitors and some 9,000 visitors are expected to attend and there is plenty on offer for those working in or involved in landscape design and management.

The CPD-accredited seminars are free to attend and registration is advisable. Improve your soil biology With prolonged heat and drought conditions challenging turf managers this year, SALTEX attendees will welcome the chance to have their soil profile assessed. The Pathology & Soil Science LIVE area will be located on the IOG Hub (stand number C180) from 11am to 1pm each day and will allow visitors to look in detail at the symptoms of some common turfgrass fungal disease problems, as infected plants are magnified and displayed on a large screen. Visitors who may have any soil profiles that are causing problems or concerns are welcome to bring in their own samples to discover how it could be improved. Step it up Ornamental illuminations prove to be a safety feature as well as decorative for outside landscaping Successful landscaping considers all areas and aspects of a space, working within client specifications to find a balance between amenity, use of space, atmosphere and an inherent ornamental value. Positioning of plants or shrubbery, access routes, seating areas, decking and steps are extremely important, as well as sourcing suitable lights to illuminate these features. The concept of the ‘outdoor room’ is well known to designers these days; incorporating lighting to totally transform the garden once darkness falls. One of the most frequent requests at Lumena Lights is for advice on how to light steps effectively. Although considered an essential safety feature, stepped areas can be an area of beauty, especially when illuminated. The term ‘Step Lighting’ is now considered its’ own garden lighting effect! There are several methods for highlighting steps and many different fittings to achieve results. The most effective is the shine light down onto the steps. Anti-glare lights mounted onto walls, sleepers or decking adjacent to the steps usually have either an ‘eyelid’, ‘louvred’ or ‘arc’ design to angle and diffuse the light. These can be recessed or surface mounted. Due to the beam angle created by these designs, positioning lights every other step is recommended to create an even and elegant light.

For ultimate safety, lights can be recessed into the risers for low-level illumination across steps and to mark each tread. If recessing into brickwork, then a perfect product is a brick light, which should replace a standard brick. The trick is to either use slatted or frosted brick lights with replaceable bulbs that are not too bright. If recessing into the step treads, then ‘marker’ lights are a sensible option on each side of the steps. These emit a low-level light from cut-outs within a raised walk-over dome. The traditional method would be to use a post light. Ideally, louvres or glare shields will be integrated into the design to ensure all light is emitted downwards and outwards to create a “spreadlight” effect. For a more contemporary look, highlight steps or adjacent structures with waterproof LED strip lights. These versatile lights lend themselves so well to straight lines and are available in various colours. Mounting strip lights inside opal lens profiles diffuse light beautifully and, again, prevent dazzling those accessing the area. Butterflies and celebration Aylett Nurseries won the RSPB’s Conservation Garden Centre of the Year Award at the Glee show. The St. Albans-based retailer, owned by Julie Aylett and Adam Wigglesworth, was presented with the accolade by John Capper, National Account Manager at the RSPB and Sam Marriage, Director at Marriage’s, leading supplier of quality pet foods and animal feeds. Aylett’s was awarded for its work on the Butterflies and Celebration Garden, located adjacent to the store. The garden was created in 2015 to celebrate 60 years of the family business and is now part of the renowned National Garden Scheme (NGS). The area is a peaceful and tranquil haven containing a spiral maze, bug hotels and wildflower meadows, providing colour for most of the year and creating

a habitat for bees, butterflies and insects. Julie and Adam were presented with a framed certificate on the Pets at Glee Seminar stage to display in-store, and won an interactive family event at the garden centre, where customers can learn about birds and wildlife and how to be more conservation friendly in their own garden. Matthew Mein, Event Director at Glee said: “Aylett Nurseries is a worthy winners of the RSPB award, following all the hard work and commitment they have put into their Butterflies and Celebration Garden. So much time, effort and enthusiasm has been invested in the garden to create such wonderful havens of colour, as well as an appealing natural space for visitors and wildlife to enjoy.”

Recycling pots In 2019, Wyevale Nurseries will replace its black plastic pots for recyclable taupe-coloured pots, supplied by Aeroplas in the West Midlands. Steve Reed, Production Director of the Container Division at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, explained: “The taupe-coloured plant pots will be used next year for our retail plants and we plan to use more than 700,000 of the new recyclable pots. By autumn 2019 most of our stock will be supplied in taupe pots to retailers. “The general public can recycle the taupe pots kerbside with other household waste, which has not been possible before. The black pots would previously end up in landfill because they contain carbon black pigment. The new taupe pots are carbon black pigmentfree polypropylene, which can be identified by near infrared (NIR) analysis and therefore can be recycled through kerbside collections. “The recyclable taupe pot is an industry initiative being led by representatives from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and UK growers. It’s great to see many growers’ backing the taupe pot and we’re very keen to look at the other ways we use plastic within the company to furthermore improve our environmental credentials.” The team at Wyevale Nurseries is also interested to see if there’s an alternative to the A3 correx boards, supplied as part of retail promotions.

Combination yields results

Ian Smith, turf consultant for St Albans School, Woollam Trust Playing Fields, has reported excellent results using the combination of a Dennis G860 cassette system and a Dennis Razor fine turf mower on the cricket pitches. The Woollham Trust Playing Fields is the largest development of its kind undertaken in a single phase in Europe. The school’s facilities include a pavilion, 22 winter pitches for rugby and football, an all-weather hockey pitch and eight cricket squares. The 73-acre site is shared with the Old Albanians Club, and is the training base for Saracens Rugby Club. “Standards are exceptionally high here at the school and we take our pitch preparations seriously,” said Ian. “You can imagine the situation if someone like Owen Farrell (England and Saracens rugby union player) was to turn an ankle on an uneven pitch. Of course, it is great to have fabulous presentation, but player safety is paramount here.” The school’s cricket department is headed by former Essex CCC cricketer Mark Ilot. In preparing the cricket pitches, Ian uses the Dennis G860, with an interchangeable cassette systemincluding scarifiers, verticutters, brushes, spikers, and slitters. “We purchased the G860 because of its versatility and the different cassettes for different maintenance needs,” said Ian. “We can use it for cutting the squares, cutting the outfields, and to scarify. For pre-season, we have a cassette

with 1mm scarifying blades to thin the square a little bit. We’ve also got the new spring tine rake cassette for cricket pitch preparation. “As the pitches are drying out we use the brush cassette to flick out the older dead grass, and generally to clean them up and make the grass stand up for when it is time to cut with the Razor.” The Razor’s 560mm (22in), 11 blade cutting cylinder is for a perfect finish. An ultra-short wheelbase ensures easy manoeuvrability and excellent performance, even on undulating surfaces. The Dennis Razor encompasses the simple ‘no tools required’ click height adjusters for quick and easy operation, a feature which Ian is particularly fond of. “The Razor is great because we are starting on turf that has been cut down to 12mm by the G860. With the click system of the Razor, it is very simple to change the height. Instead of having to go out with two separate mowers set at two different heights, like we were previously doing, you just use the one mower. In a matter of seconds we can go down from 12mm to 10mm and then you give it a couple of clicks and then you are down to 8mm and then a couple more clicks and you are down to 6mm, it’s as easy as that. No tools are required and any of the staff can use it without any problems whatsoever. Unique contract Despite the summer drought Northampton Borough Council’s green spaces look excellent, due to a unique contract between two major facilities management companies Veolia and idverde. plus help from a Ventrac 4500 compact tractor with ToughCut mowing deck. “This is the first time twe have joined forces with a major resource management company on a sub-contractor basis to maintain green spaces,” says Angus Lindsay, Group Head of Assets and Fleet at idVerde. “We began the contract early in June and the green spaces were, to say the least, a challenge. Long grass, especially in public spaces, is difficult to get back into specification when neglected, but the Ventrac with its ToughCut deck has certainly helped us get on top of the job quickly. In my opinion, this deck is a good as a flail, if not better. Without a doubt it’s a very good, reliable and robust compact tractor and mower combination, which has proved ideal for this contract.” Craig Langford, idverde’s Operations Manager for Northampton added: “The Ventrac has been a godsend! At the start of the contract we were faced with acres of significantly overgrown and unmaintained space, but the Ventrac with ToughCut deck quickly got to grips with these

areas. Being able to operate on 30 degree banks is one of its main attributes and it has worked brilliantly for us.” Operator Steve Glover, who began his career with the council and has been employed by various contract management companies, has maintained the Borough’s green spaces for over 32 years. “This is the best machine tI have operated over the last 32 years,” he said. “Although I spend a lot of time on banks and slopes, I feel extremely safe. Its wide footprint, eight tyres and low centre of gravity make it incredibly stable and the articulated frame makes it highly manoeuvrable. “This ToughCut deck is amazing; it cuts down anything and leaves a really acceptable finish. It has simple controls and the visibility of the out-front attachments is very good. I have used it for 108 hours and it hasn’t missed a beat, apart from one puncture when I ran over a broken bottle! How it gets the power to do the job from a 24 hp engine, I do not know, but it just keeps on delivering. The managers at idverde have certainly given us the tools to do the job and I’m sure we’ll be getting more attachments over the course of the contract.” www.espacevert.eu

Integral to cider regime

Thatchers, the fourth-generation cider makers based at Myrtle Farm in Sandford, Somerset, has purchased a Spider 1 remote-controlled mower from supplying dealer, Loxston Groundcare. The new mower will be used around the cider mill and the adjoining orchards. Neil Day, Operations Director at Thatchers said: “We were founded on this site in 1904 and the current Managing Director, Martin Thatcher, is the fourth generation of the family to head the company. Under Martin’s stewardship the business has grown substantially and with that success we have had to increase the infrastructure. As a rural company with an international profile, we are considerate about our impact on the environment and keeping the profile of our buildings as unobtrusive as possible. “As an example, to construct our new Jubilee building we excavated down into the existing ground level, which enabled us to lower the roofline. However, we now have

grass banks to maintain and need a mower to help us do that, so I tasked our maintenance technician, Ed Young, to review the market.” “Using the internet, I found various videos of Spider mowers and their tracked competitors,” Ed said. “I discounted the tracked versions as they appeared too aggressive on the turf and then reviewed the Spider website. I sent an enquiry to Spider’s UK Sales Manager, Nick Penn and a demo was quickly arranged here at Myrtle Farm. I was very impressed, as was Neil, and we virtually placed our order ‘on the spot’. “We have many visitors to Myrtle Farm including regular tours and our biennial Open Day, which has been in our calendar since 1993 and attracts thousands of people each time. It’s important that we keep the premises in pristine condition all year round and the Spider is now integral to our grounds maintenance regime.”
