Is life a journey? Yes, life is a journey, an excursion, an expedition into the unknown, and we should be kind, humble, and responsible until we reach the other end of the tunnel. Be the best that you can be, and your best is good enough.

Everyone has a purpose in life. I believe that you should seek your journey like you seek the air you breathe. Know your cause in life. Sure, your purpose may take time to discover, but it will someday manifest. During your moment of silence, ponder daily. Serenity will embed your soul like the rejuvenation of magical plants blossoming so beautifully on a sunny day. It is crucial that we see ourselves in a positive light. Surround yourselves with those who have positive attitudes because you inhale what you breathe. If not, you will wither like a flower on its last breath. Remember, you are somebody, and the audacity of being somebody is phenomenal. You should seek spirituality while embarking upon your personal journey. Modify things in life that are not beneficial to you. You will find yourselves conquering adversities that seemed impossible.

I know first-hand about adversities. As a child, I grew up in extreme poverty and had many misfortunes. Life threw me curve balls, foul balls, twists, and turns, where I incurred childhood homelessness, abuse, foster care, absent and alcoholic parents, and so much more. Growing up was tough.

However, the power of faith allowed me to cope each day, and I had to deal with the past. Ultimately, I landed on a road where I found my purpose in life. The road I traveled led to hopes, dreams, and possibilities, things I captured along my route. Now, I feel as free as a bird, and I get to fly in the direction of my choice. For the first time, I share my story, not for sympathy nor empathy but for understanding of others who have walked in my shoes, the unspoken.

I refused to allow hardship to dictate my life. I knew that quitting would have been easy, but I decided to push harder. I miraculously overcame unimaginable challenges that consumed me. Ultimately, I finished college, became an educator, a songwriter, a music composer, an author, a poet, an entrepreneur, and a publisher.

I encourage all to delve into your souls and reflect on your past, whether good or bad. You will undoubtedly find yourselves wandering along a road that will take you on a journey into your future.

DR. MILTON MOORE

MOORE UNIQUE Can I ask you a little bit about yourself?

Dr. Moore: Sure, I will be glad to talk with you. I’m a dermatologist. Originally, I attended Xavier University in New Orleans and became a pharmacist. I went on to Meharry Medical School to become a physician. Then I went to Howard University to become a dermatologist.

Being a dermatologist, I started designing products that would help problems that many people have. I had a problem with razor bumps. When I would shave, I would cut the bumps, and they would bleed. I got tired of it and said, "I keep writing prescriptions for this, but nothing is working, so I need to come up with something that will make this condition better." That’s when I went into creating products that made my skin better and decided that I would make those products available to help other people like myself all over the world.

Why did you choose to specialize in dermatology?

Dr. Moore: Well, it allowed me to use my pharmacy knowledge to my best ability. It was just a natural thing for me to go into dermatology after becoming a pharmacist.

What are common skin problems people are faced with?

Dr. Moore: There are a lot of things that are very common, but acne is probably the most common problem for the younger generation. You also have women that are post-menopausal who start having acne problems as well because of hormonal changes.

Eczema would probably be the number two problem.

That is an allergic skin condition where you get rashes that can itch and become seasonal. Eczema can be very debilitating in terms of scratching and rubbing the skin and can get worse.

Psoriasis is also a big problem as well.

What is one thing you know about skin that everyone should know?

Dr. Moore: You should know it is the largest organ in the body. You have to take care of an organ and hydrate it by drinking water. You have to also apply certain things to the skin, depending on the time of the year. If it is wintertime and the skin gets dry, you should use some lotion to moisturize it. You want to hydrate it. If it's summertime, you want to use a soap that is antibacterial to keep the antibacterial count down, so it won't cause odor that comes from under the arms or from sweat glands.

You want to protect it from the sun, especially if you are fair complected. Sunscreen helps with that. Not only can you use sunscreen on your face, but you can also use it on your neck and arm as well. You will look younger longer, and if you are fair complected, you can reduce the risk of skin cancer.

BILL C. LITTLEJOHN Former Judge Bill C. Littlejohn led us on an inspiring excursion into his journey from his early days as a youth to his subsequent days as a builder, a lawyer, a judge, and an entrepreneur.

During college, he attended Central State University and majored in accounting. He graduated in 1969 and worked for General Motors as a foreman. According to Judge Littlejohn, his friend, who was currently in law school asked, “Why don’t you go to law school?” He responded, "Heck, if you can go to law school, I can go to law school, too. That changed my life!"

How do you advertise your business?

Judge Bill Littlejohn: We only market to wholesalers and stylists. However, we sell hair online to anyone. We tell the stylists that they can get their products directly from our profit center. You don’t have to worry about the quality.

The quality and prices are consistent.

The most important thing is customer service. Based on our statistics, we found that by the year 2023, the hair business will be a 10-billion-dollar business. We keep statistics and about 30 percent of barbers and salons are taking advantage of that. We have some stylists who cannot do extensions and barbers who cannot do units. However, we have instructional videos to help improve application skills. The average salary for a stylist in Houston is about $26,000 dollars annually. With increased revenues, a stylist can buy more things and offer a better service. Men and women love hair. In fact, 72 percent of them say they have more self- esteem when they are looking the way they would like.

Who do you attribute your success?

Well, I’m in the process of being successful. I don’t think I’m successful yet.

I like the idea of just getting up each day and having the passion. If you have passion, you can accomplish anything.

Dr. Ilene Harper is the founder and Executive Director of the Family Life and Community Resource Center (FLCRC). She serves as a liaison between the home and school life for many vulnerable students. She has also secured over a million dollars in grants and corporate funding to support FLCRC program services. Additionally, she has spent twenty-nine years in the field of education inspiring and motivating students, parents, and educators.

Dr. Harper has lead successful K-12 school district initiatives that resulted in national and state awards.

The Character Education Partnership’s National School District of Character award, the State School District of Character award and the 2014 Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Sugar Land are among some of her K-12 career accomplishments. Her career includes ten years of teaching and counseling, five years of serving as an assistant principal, eight years of central office administration, and six years of community-based leadership.

Dr. Harper received a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University, two master's degrees and her undergraduate degree from Louisiana Tech University. While devotedly working as a central office administrator, assistant principal, school counselor, and teacher, her focus remained on the students. Educating the "whole child" is the framework for her education philosophy.

Passionately believing in people and getting others to believe in themselves is her greatest talent. She is a leader with a passion for growing people and leading them to achievements they didn’t think possible. Dr. Harper has presented to thousands at national, state, and local conferences. She was selected to present at a Congressional Briefing on School Discipline in Washington, D.C. in 2013. Likewise, she has been highlighted as a leader in education in several issues of Educational Leadership.

Dr. Harper believes it takes the entire community to educate our children.

Therefore, she established partnerships in the community to promote positive changes and growth. As a leader in the community, she developed, organized, and coordinated highly effective programs and trainings. She is the creator of the "Annual Back to School Parent Chat" which has been a successful pillar in the community for the last seventeen years.

Dr. Harper is a Silver Star and life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Education Chair of the NAACP Missouri City & Vicinity Branch, a board member with the TW Davis YMCA, and advisory council member for Child Advocates of Fort Bend. In addition to her active community leadership, she is a wife and mother to three beautiful children and three darling grandchildren.

Dr. Harper is an outstanding residence of Fort Bend County. She believes that it is important for each of us to know our purpose in life and work towards fulfilling that mission. Her goal is to leave a legacy of great work and good Christian Character so that those who come after her can be passionate and committed to continuing the work.

SHARONDA CHARLES Sharonda Charles was born in Houston, Texas. She graduated from Texas Southern University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Speech Communications.

She worked in radio and television for over ten years as an Account Executive, establishing a proven record of generating the most in new business sales.

After taking a long hard look at her journey, she made the decision, along with the encouragement and support of her best friend, to transition into education.

Ms. Charles has worked in education for almost two decades as an English Language Arts and Reading Teacher, teaching high school students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.

She has received many honors and awards such as the distinguished Extra Miler award that was given by the Board of Education, the Superintendent, and the Community for the efforts she expended on a wide variety of projects and events for students. This award is only given to those who have extended influence and effort that is exerted in the cause of public education.

If you ask her what keeps her in the field of education, she would tell you it is in her blood because she grew up in a family of educators. They inspired her to take on tutoring and mentoring roles while in college. She believes in fostering strong relationships with her students. Some of her students have cited the teacher as a driving force for their decision to further their education after high school.

Ms. Charles continues to be a role model for her students, someone they can trust, and who will always "go that extra mile" to ensure their success.

EDUCATOR'S PERSPECTIVE Zayda LLORENS

As a bilingual teacher in a very diverse city, it is my goal to inspire young minds and instill a love of learning to the point in which students are motivated to continue into higher education. I work at a Title 1 school in one of the largest school districts in Houston, and each classroom is filled with students that are classified as minorities.

In recent years, we are beginning to see more and more minorities breaking social and poverty cycles and as a result, attending college. As a teacher, that’s what I want students to see in me. I want them to see that someone that looks like them defied the statistics and reached,what used to be, the unthinkable.

Students need to know that they can achieve greatness even in a world where it is challenging for minorities to succeed. My hope is that teachers across the nation would help pique students’ interest and allow kids to explore through project-based learning. Hopefully, teachers would make room for students’ choices while teaching. This is pivotal in creating a love of learning that lasts and one where students feel energized and respected.

I believe that every child deserves a quality education regardless of personal health, development, social-economic status, or their cultural background. There is no question that education is a powerful driver of prosperity. Children deserve an education that treat them with dignity and worth, one that will help them to fulfill their potential, no matter their circumstances.

It is our duty as educators to provide every child with a solid foundation to build on. It should include an environment surrounded by loving teachers who can help their students develop self-confidence, empathy for others, and the ability to make good choices and decisions. I have learned, after thirty-seven years in teaching, that an effective classroom must have the best practices in place in order to have a successful year. You cannot teach effectively without good classroom management.

I believe that all children are unique and special and have something to bring to their own education. Every classroom has its own classroom community and culture. My role as the teacher is to foster my students with love, respect, and diplomacy.

Parental involvement is also very important in my classroom. When parents embrace and nurture their children, positive outcomes are reflected. I do my best to establish good working relationships with parents from day one. It is crucial to the success of my students. When parents and teachers work together to establish a thriving classroom environment, the effects on students’ performances are profound.

Additionally, building good character traits in students is also essential. Not only does it allow students to interact positively with one another in the classroom, but it also allows them to make positive connections outside of the classroom.

I will continue to assist my students in expressing themselves, as well as embracing the differences of others.
