Our Rhine Adventure We traveled the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam on Viking Tialfi.

BASEL, SWITZERLAND. November 11. It was St. Martin’s Day and all the children were out with their parents celebrating in Marktplatz.

Several vendors were selling meats, sausages and cheeses. We bought a sample of cheese from this delightful cheese lady.

Basel is a gateway city adjacent to Germany’s Black Forest and the Alsace region of France. The Basel Mßnster, originally a Catholic cathedral, is now a reformed Protestant church. It was built between 1019 and 1500.

November 12. BREISACH, GERMANY. We took a rainy excursion through the Black Forest and saw cuckoo clock and Black Forest Torte demonstrations. Bartholdi’s statue of Liberty stands at the entrance to Colmar, France.

COLMAR, FRANCE. Medieval Colmar (Alsace): Little Venice quarter, 9th c. streets, 13th c. Old Town, French and German Renaissance architecture, and half-timber houses of the Tanners Quarters. Right: 21 Rue des Boulangers.

November 13. STRASBOURG, FRANCE. Strasbourg Cathedral, the “supervisor,� rose window, and astronomical clock. The stained glass windows date from the 12th to 14th centuries.

November 16. COLOGNE, GERMANY

Cologne cathedral’s reliquary for the Three Wise Men. Construction for this majestic cathedral began in 1248 and continued in stages until its completion in 1880. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Light floods in from both the apse and the nave.
