Dear Members,
At the Annual Meeting, Jerrod Tumbleson shared data showing the yearly use of the Club in its different areas. Those members who enjoy our facilities year-round can attest that usage is found twelve months a year at Grey Oaks. Our calendar of events, contained within this magazine, is full of fun ways to spend time with your family and friends on the courts, in the Wellness Center, on the golf courses, or at the pool.
Speaking of swimming, with the rising temperatures during the late spring and summer seasons, the best way to cool off is right here at the Club’s resort-style pool. In this edition of the LIVING magazine, we highlight this amenity and the outstanding team members who make sure your visit to the pool always exceeds your expectations. We also take you behind the scenes to explain how the pool is kept at a constant year-round temperature using environmentally sustainable geothermal power.
Once again, this summer, we will offer our reciprocal program for golf and dining. Many “member favorite” clubs are on the list again this year. Look for separate communications in April outlining all the options and dates of use.
Summer is also a time for our team to plan, train and organize for the upcoming fiscal year. New to Grey Oaks, we are pleased to introduce our J-1 Visa Program for our F&B and Culinary Departments. J-1 team members are international participants in a work-and-study-based exchange program, providing them with the opportunity to complete their internships abroad. Over the next 12 months, our J-1 interns will immerse themselves in all aspects of their chosen field, enhance their skills, broaden their cultural perspectives, and contribute to our team’s success. This J-1 Visa Program would not have been possible if not for the forward-thinking investment that the members made in Bellavista, where the J-1 interns will stay during their time with us. This program is a way to strengthen our year-round team during a time of continued challenges with the local labor market. As always, we will look forward to welcoming back our H-2B employees this fall as well!
In closing, we thank you for a fantastic winter season and hope you “Live Your Best Life” with us this summer at Grey Oaks or at your northern home. If you are traveling, may your days be filled with sunshine, blue skies, and family time as you embark on your summer adventure.
All the Best,
DON EMERY, CCM, CCE GENERAL MANAGER

HydroAthletics may be the ideal fitness class, especially for individuals seeking a low-impact workout that yields high-impact results with less joint stress, muscle fatigue, and injury.
Led by aquatics fitness expert Stephen Davide, HydroAthletics uses Aqualogix Drag Resistance Technology to increase strength, flexibility, and mobility while limiting wear and tear on the body.
HydroAthletics class participants are outfitted with patented Aqualogix hand bells and fins, which create omnidirectional aquatic drag resistance. Unlike traditional aquatics class equipment, which is buoyant, the drag resistance from the innovative hand bells and fins allows users to work muscle groups equally and smoothly in any direction. The hand bells and fins come in different resistant levels, from low to high. Beginners in the class are encouraged to use the lowest resistance equipment until they become well acquainted with the exercises and how the equipment feels in the water. They can opt to switch to a higher resistance.
Because of the increased resistance encountered when exercising in water, the workout time is much shorter than on land. The movement of a limb in water generates resistance that can be as high as 10-12 times that experienced while doing the same activity on land, and as a result, the speed of movement is significantly reduced. This reduced speed results in a safely controlled motion that improves muscle strength and endurance.
Whether you are looking for a new method of cross-training to improve your athletic performance or seeking injury recovery pool training, you will benefit from our HydroAthletics class.

Ihear “tin man, running man, tick-tocks... now push-ups, side leg raises... grab your dumbbells and noodles!” coming from class instructor Susan Jennings, who has more energy and stamina than anyone I’ve ever seen. My preconceived notion that water aerobics was a laid-back and easy class quickly changed as Susan led the class participants through the various cardiovascular and strength exercises. Although the workout seemed challenging and fast-paced, I observed a fun and lively atmosphere among the members, who were entertained by Susan’s amusing instruction and infectious laughter.
Water aerobics offers the best of both worlds:
• The resistance of the water helps elevate the heart rate, which in turn strengthens the heart and lungs and improves circulation while reducing stress on the heart. The resistance benefits of water exercise exist regardless of the direction in which you move. Whether you are jogging in place, stepping out to the side, or kicking your legs diagonally, aqua exercise can be a great way to build strength and endurance in all planes of motion. Also, the hydrostatic pressure of water increases lymph drainage and reduces significant swelling and lymphedema everywhere within the body.
• The buoyancy of the water reduces the impact on the joints and muscles, especially for individuals with arthritis, injuries, joint pain, or other musculoskeletal issues. In water, your balance is improved, and the fear of falling can be diminished, which is crucial for people with Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, and other gait disturbances. The use of noodles also increases the balance benefits.
Unlike some exercises that target only specific muscle groups, water aerobics offers a full-body workout of cardio and strength training at the same time. As you move through the water, you strengthen your arms, legs, core, and back. The water also reduces the risk of over extending or straining muscles, making it easier to stretch and increase flexibility. This modality is especially beneficial for aging adults or individuals with comorbidities that limit mobility.
As we age, we lose elasticity and range of motion in our joints, such as our hips, spine, knees, and shoulders. Water allows these joints to move in greater ranges than on land, thereby increasing flexibility and strength.
Water aerobics is open to nearly all people at any age or skill level. Whether you’re looking to improve your overall fitness, manage an existing health condition, or simply have fun while exercising, water aerobics is a fantastic option.

The Club’s resort-style swimming pool is one of its major attractions. However, maintaining comfortable water temperatures in the pool all year-round can be costly and energy-intensive. One of the most efficient and sustainable methods to heat and cool the water is through geothermal power, which leverages the earth’s stable underground temperatures to provide consistent heating and cooling. Grey Oaks replaced its combination natural gas and obsolete geothermal pump system and installed a solely geothermal pump system in 2022. The design of the system not only meets the Club’s heating and cooling needs but also works within the current pump room space.
Geothermal systems use heat pumps to transfer warmth from the ground into the pool during cooler months and remove excess heat during warmer months. This process requires significantly less electricity than conventional heating and cooling methods, leading to reduced operational costs.
Unlike fossil fuel-based heating systems, geothermal energy produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions. By tapping into the earth’s natural heat, the Club can drastically reduce its carbon footprint while maintaining optimal pool temperatures. Geothermal energy is an eco-friendly solution that aligns with the Club’s sustainability initiatives.
One of the biggest advantages of geothermal energy is its consistency. While air temperatures fluctuate, the ground maintains a relatively stable temperature yearround. This stability ensures that pool water remains comfortable regardless of the season, providing an enjoyable experience at all times.
Geothermal heat pump systems have fewer moving parts than traditional heating and cooling units, resulting in lower maintenance costs and fewer breakdowns. With proper installation, these systems can last for decades, making them a long-term investment for the Club.
