magine a Church where every member feels like family and where faith isn’t just a belief but a shared mission. The Church’s call to synodality is also the commitment of our GCXXIV to be a presence that is generative or life-giving, and synodal in our service in the educating communities. As the Synod on Synodality asks for the redefinition of our Church, we are also called to redefine our presence among ourselves, our communities, and our mission. We are called to be more fraternal, life-giving, resilient, and integrated in our responses and interventions. Mother Chiara reminds us, that our Blessed Mother appeals to us to be authentic in our charity towards others. The charity that allows Jesus to be present among us.
We witness in the Church how families nurture their faith for generations. We see a beautiful tapestry of love and commitment from grandparents to young children. Parents who are active in the parish council, teenagers as altar servers, lectors, commentators, and catechists, and younger children participating in the choir and youth groups. Their collective involvement has created a strong sense of faith and community within their family and has inspired others to get involved.
The Vatican’s recent guidelines have opened a new path for families within the Church. We’re no longer just passengers on this journey; we’re co-pilots, shaping the direction of our faith community. This is our invitation to step into our roles as co-creators, bringing our unique experiences and passions to build a Church that truly reflects our needs and aspirations.
The recent severe weather from the southwest monsoon and typhoon Carina has caused widespread destruction in Metro Manila, affecting residents of Sta. Mesa - including our oratorians, lay mission partners, and neighbors. It was a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the call to greater fraternity and solidarity. DBS Sta. Mesa opened its doors once again to evacuees. Our educating communities rallied in synodality, extending a helping hand to those families in need. From acts of selfless kindness to generous donations. We witnessed active charity transforming lives: the shared hot meals, the presence of the Sisters who listened, consoled, and gave hope, a kind smile that offered comfort and consolation to those who had lost everything. In the face of adversity, we have become generative, a presence that gives hope, affirming our faith and trust in God’s Divine Providence and our Blessed Mother, the Help of Christians.
Let us pause and reflect. Have we truly lived the synodal journey of walking together? Have we created spaces of welcome, acceptance, and active listening? Are we engaging in meaningful dialogue and extending care in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need?
May our communities and families be a synodal church, where everyone finds a home and a place to

As a family, we actively serve the church. The fact that we are both devoted religious people and frequent attendees of mass have had a big impact on our kids’ upbringing. From early childhood through puberty, they were taught principles that were firmly rooted in our practiced faith. We all still participate in the Church’s mission as family members who attend Sunday mass together and serve as choir members and readers. One of the keys to drawing kids closer to God was taking them
to church every Sunday so we could attend mass together. We still do this now. Another was having a regular night prayer before bedtime. We even choose to engage in church events during Holy Week rather than visiting beaches. This is one of the easiest methods to make sure they comprehend the full impact of prayers. Through consistent practice, we have imparted to them the importance of group prayer and its calming effects. From an early age, we have instilled in our children the knowledge that everything we own is a result of God’s kindness, that He is the center of our existence, and that we should always prioritize His love in everything that we do. Of course, we can continue to deepen our faith in the here and now thanks to the gracious intercession of our heavenly mother, the Help of Christians. Our family’s relationship with the Lord is strengthened when we have true, honest bonds with one other.
Our family is not a perfect one; we have our shortcomings, but we are trying our best to find the best possible way to understand one another. Through our daily devotion to praying the holy rosary, we commit ourselves to choosing open communication, trusting one another, and being the parents our children can run to in times of doubt. We have customs in the family that we tried to uphold. (a) We expressly say our prayers especially for those who ask for it: a particular individual, family, or even an upcoming activity before we start our nightly rosary. (2) We encouraged our children to go to church and take part in outreach programs offered by the church. The proverb “gifts or blessings are best enjoyed when you share them with others” —especially those who are in need—is something we really believe in. Since 2010, we have contributed to the parish scholarship program where we previously resided. The small gestures we have shared are our tangible ways of helping students who genuinely need a solid education but
Engr. Roy Nacario (Mary Help of Christians School (Cebu), Inc.)
are unable to pay for it. (3) Although issues and worries are a part of any family’s everyday dynamics, choosing to talk about them with your family—especially now that both of our children are in their teens and understand the rules of the house makes the process easier. We let children handle household responsibilities and choose the best approach to make it work for them, based on the adage “Experience is the best teacher.” As long as they exercise additional caution and don’t jeopardize safety.
Mrs. Rhoda M. Tiopes (Don Bosco School - Salesian Sisters, Inc.)
Our family’s faith journey has been shaped by the strong roots instilled by our parents. Both sets of grandparents (Pros and Sonia Pastoral and Manong Benggoy and Manang Tita Ponce) actively involved us in MHC School and Church activities and, most importantly, the daily family rosary. We strive to continue this tradition, even though maintaining a daily family rosary can be challenging in today’s busy world. As parents, we believe the most effective way to nurture our children’s faith is to journey alongside them. We encourage Theo and Toby’s participation in the school’s SYM and Church activities. Theo has served as a Knight of the Altar, and now Toby contributes as a drummer in the choir. While initial encouragement was necessary, they gradually took ownership of their roles. However, their participation requires our support – the ever-important “pahatid/pasundo” (taking them to and picking them up). Family dinners are a cornerstone of our faith formation practice. Open communication is fostered by discussing the day’s highlights, low points, and issues. This helps guide them in making good decisions. We actively participate in Mass, singing and listening attentively to the Word of God. We believe active family involvement in the church plays a vital role in shaping a child’s faith. Engaging in activities and faith formation programs at MHCC and church, along with open communication at home, allows families to deepen their understanding of faith, experience belonging, witness faith in action, and walk a shared faith journey. While our family isn’t perfect, we strive to do our part, however small it may seem. This approach, we believe, allows parents to become effective faith educators at home. We thank our Salesian Family, SDB priests and FMA Sisters, for their guidance in helping us become good people and live our lives fully. Finally, we thank Jesus and Mama Mary for their loving presence in our family and we entrust ourselves to them.
My upbringing at Mary Help of Christians School (MHCS) instilled in me a love for faith lived in action. The school’s emphasis on “reason, religion, and loving-kindness” continues to guide my approach to raising my children. MHC’s holistic education, combined with their involvement in synodal processes and decision-making, equips my children with a balanced understanding of faith and empowers them to integrate it into their daily lives. This aligns with the Salesian educators’ influence, who fostered in me a deep appreciation for service within the Church. Our family actively participates in the Church community. We attend Mass regularly, and my children contribute through roles like choir members, lectors, or communion servers. This legacy of service exemplifies the importance of active participation and mirrors the synodal ethos of inclusive collaboration. Sunday school and active engagement in our synodal parish further enrich their spiritual growth. My daughters even became Sunday school leaders, demonstrating the empowering nature of a synodal Church where all voices are valued. Through this active engagement, my children learn not only the teachings of the faith but also the importance of participation, dialogue, and communal discernment. This foundation equips them to embrace the Catholic faith authentically and contribute meaningfully to the Church’s life and mission. Being part of a synodal church helps our family create a loving environment where our children can grow into kind and responsible people of faith.

After 5 years of gap, NADS is finally back to listen, accompany, and empower the young people of the Salesian Youth Movement from the SDB South and North Province. The National Assembly Days (NADS) was held in Don Bosco Retreat House,
Lawaan, Cebu City from June 27 to July 2, 2023 with the theme: “Padayon”. “Padayon” is a Cebuano word, meaning “continue.” The gathering was joined by Fr. Fidel Orendain, SDB (Provincial Superior –SDB- FIS), Sr. Debbie Ponsaran, FMA (Coordinator of Youth Ministry Sector – FMAFIL), Fr. Rooney Undar, SDB (Delegate for Commission on Youth Ministry – FIS), Sr. Joralyn Selloria, FMA (SYM National Coordinator – FMAFIL), Fr. Ramil Maranan, SDB (SYM Delegate – FIN), and Fr. Vince Michael Sabal, SDB (SYM Delegate – FIS).
The young people had the opportunity to listen to the SDB and FMA, and other lay mission partners, varying perspectives on the Salesian spirituality. Through this in-depth sharing of the charism, each participant understood the purpose behind every activity they started on behalf of the youth. Young People Talk! It was the young people’s time to share their realities and how their current interests have affected them. Open dialogue helped young people and animators plan ways to work together as a ONE-SYM and create opportunities for youth leadership. The experience fostered mutual appreciation and unity.
The SYM-NADS Manifesto wrapped up the 7-day journey of the young and their animators and facilitators.
The One SYM Coordinating Team (OSCT) developed many initiatives and programs that will act as “ model” for the future activities of the Salesian Youth Groups in three provinces. Fr. Fidel Orendain presided over the Eucharistic Celebration that marked the conclusion of NADS 2023. He challenged the delegates, asking them to move forward by transforming themselves. PADAYON! | Sr. Maria Concepcion Mabeda, FMA
Grades 4-6 students from different FMA- FIL presences participated in the Salesian Youth Movement Kids’ Fest at MHCC Canlubang, Laguna on February 24, 2024. The theme “Rejoice and Testify,” tells us of the festival’s aim to allow young people to enjoy, learn, and hopefully become missionaries to their peers. They engaged in artistic, educational, and recreational activities that helped them grow in their spirituality and sense of community.

“ManGrows, Mangroves” Laudato Sì advocacy of VIDES Philippines Volunteers
79 VIDES Philippines volunteers participated in a twoday environmental initiative in Batangas and Quezon from May 18-19, 2024. This annual event is a tangible response to the climate crisis, aligning with the Laudato Si’ call for a sustainable and harmonious world. Volunteers cleaned up the coastline, planted mangroves, and engaged with local fisherfolk in San Juan, Batangas. Supported by the LGU and MENRO, the group included representatives and volunteers from Klaveness Maritime Agency. Sr. Melanie Pilar, VIDES delegate also gave a “Laudato Si: Seeds of Hope” formation. The second day focused on team-building, relaxation, and appreciation for nature through activities like swimming, snorkeling, and cooking together. May they continue to inspire others as stewards of creation.
In Memoriam
On August 14, 2023, on the vigil of the Feast of Assumption, two days before her 91st birthday, the Lord called Sr. Elsa Geroche, FMA to Himself. Sr. Elsa shared, “In my life’s journey, I have experienced loneliness and solitude which could not be understood...many times, I had to run to Jesus and Mary, my source of strength. Up to now, I often experience strongly God’s presence in my daily life”. True enough, the day before she died, a tumor was found in her pancreas, and it had inflamed the gall bladder, a pain she was carrying secretly in silence with Jesus and Mary as the source of her strength.
Sr. Maria Geraldina Rubia, FMA, peacefully returned to her Creator and Spouse on May 31, 2024, at the age of 65. Born on May 6, 1959, Sr. Ge lived a life full of purpose and impact, touching countless young lives, particularly the children she mentored in various Salesian Sisters schools across the Philippines. Her vibrant personality and infectious joy inspired all who knew her.
YALE MODEL UNITED NATIONS
“Even the greatest was once a beginner”
A 10,000-mile journey awaited the YMUN delegates, a thrilling adventure tempered by initial homesickness. The 20-hour flight, while challenging, became a bonding experience, fostering camaraderie among representatives from MHCS Pampanga, MHCC Canlubang, and DBS Manila. Driven by a shared commitment to global betterment, the delegates embarked on this extraordinary endeavor with anticipation and purpose.
A week in the heart of New York allowed the delegates to acclimate to the city’s frigid temperatures. Their first snowfall, witnessed from the iconic Statue of Liberty, was a magical experience, sparking a joyful snowball fight, snowman building, and snow angel making. Time Square, a dazzling spectacle that lived up to its reputation, provided countless unforgettable firsts.
The Yale Model United Nations Conference was the pinnacle of their trip. Immersed in a diverse community, they forged lasting friendships. The initial day’s intense competitive atmosphere pushed them to their limits. However, the following day, as debates deepened, a shared sense of camaraderie emerged among delegates.
Eeche Faunillan, a Grade 12 student from Mary Help of Christians School (Cebu) Inc., brought home a prestigious trophy by winning the YMUN Global Citizen of the Arts Competition. Her winning piece, inspired by the theme “Perseverance,” is a testament to her resilience and dedication. The entire experience fostered critical thinking, collaboration, and camaraderie among the delegates. While the award is a highlight, the true value lies in the growth and friendships forged during the YMUN journey.
The delegates have a message: To the next batch of YMUN delegates, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and make your voice heard. Silence is not an option. Remember, every great journey begins with a courageous leap into the unknown. | Isaiah Jarred N. Quirante

Don Bosco School Manila and Salesian Sisters: A Haven in the Flood
Manila, Philippines (July 24-25, 2024) – When the relentless southwest monsoon rains and Typhoon Carina unleashed catastrophic floods, inundating homes and even reaching the second floor of the houses, Don Bosco School Manila and the Salesian Sisters emerged as a beacon of hope. On July 24, the school opened its doors to shelter 394 displaced residents from Barangays 598, 599, 601, and 602 Sta. Mesa, Manila. On July 25, the President of the Philippines put Metro Manila under state of calamity.
The Salesian Sisters and lay mission partners swiftly mobilized to provide essential relief services. Hot meals were prepared and distributed to the evacuees, which included elderly individuals, adults, young professionals, children, and even a fiveday-old infant. As the number of evacuees continues to rise, so does the outpouring of support from the Don Bosco School Educating community. Parents, alumni, and generous individuals have been steadily providing essential donations such as sacks of rice, canned goods, water, clothing, and blankets. Their unwavering compassion and generosity have been instrumental in aiding those affected by the floods. On the morning of July 25, hot meals continued to be offered as some families began the arduous task of cleaning up their flood-damaged homes. To ensure the safety of their children, many parents left them at the school while they attended to their homes.
Amidst the chaos and fear, the Salesian Sisters also provided immediate medical attention to an evacuee who had fallen into a manhole, sustaining multiple bruises.
One father expressed his profound gratitude, sharing, “We were lost and terrified in the flood when the Salesian Sisters welcomed us without hesitation. They provided us with a safe haven for my family.”
To address the immediate needs of the affected families, a relief operation was launched, distributing essential supplies to approximately 300 households. Each family received 5 kilograms of rice, 10 canned goods, 5 noodles, clothes, blankets and biscuits. Recognizing the urgent needs of those whose homes were completely washed away, some of the school’s tarpaulins were given to serve as makeshift shelters.
The outpouring of gratitude from the evacuees was overwhelming. With many having lost their belongings to the flood, the distribution of clothing provided much-needed comfort and dignity.
Don Bosco School Manila Educating Community and the Salesian Sisters-Philippines & Papua New Guinea Province remain committed to supporting the affected communities in their recovery journey. Ongoing assessments are being conducted to determine additional needs and plan for future relief initiatives. | Sr. Virginia C. Limbauan, Fma
The Novice Formators from around the world, gathered on February 7-27, 2024, at the FMA General House in Rome. Organized by the Formation Sector, the conference theme is “Being Novice Formators today: How to accompany and personalize the training by activating new training processes?” The opening session included a prayer followed by a dynamic activity where participants engaged in a “potter’s workshop.”
FMA Formation (Juniors and young Seniors)
The Temporary Professed Sisters with 8 to 15 years of profession joined this formative moment which began with a short encounter with Sr. Runita Borja, FMA who shared with them the importance of building relationships in the journey of becoming. She also gave them practical means to live the religious life to its fullest. Sr. Tita also gave a conference on the importance of living in a community reminding them that building up the community is a personal responsibility as much as it is a common undertaking. Sr. Cynthia Calabig, FMA, accompanied them towards the deepening of the Culture of ongoing formation and how it is built at personal, communitarian, provincial, and Institute levels. They were able to come up with their specific plans of formation for the coming years. The last day was spent in “serene” moments of togetherness.
On March 23, 2024, Sr. Jeanette Palasota, FMA, a member of the Institute’s Formation Sector, led an online formation for seventeen temporary professed FMAs from the CIAO provinces. The session focused on the “Challenges and Resources in Mission,” emphasizing the core motivation for becoming an FMA: a lifelong call from God that requires constant nurturing through prayer and centering one’s life in Christ. Sr. Jeanette encouraged the participants to embrace their diverse missions, supporting one another as they navigate challenges and opportunities in their journey of faith and service.
Participants engaged in a reflective exercise to identify and address their challenges. Common themes included time management, collaboration, balancing prayer and work, and building relationships.
Sr. Jeanette Palasota offered guidance, emphasizing the importance of grounding oneself in God’s love and valuing personal well-being over productivity. She stressed the significance of prayer and a deep relationship with Christ as the foundation of FMA identity. Participants were encouraged to view challenges as opportunities for growth and to trust in God’s plan. |

CIAO ENCOUNTER OF TEMPORARY PROFESSED SISTERS
Past Pupils’ Laudato Si’ Activities
In a heartfelt response to Pope Francis’ ‘Laudato Si,’ an encyclical letter for urgent environmental action, the Federation of FMA Past Pupils, led by Sr. Lyn Yap, FMA, collaborated with Malibiran Farm & Resort to organize tree planting. The initiative occurred on April 7, 2024, in San Luis, Batangas.
The tree-planting event seeks to develop a deeper connection with nature and promote balance by planting fruit-bearing trees. On Sunday, after participating in the Holy Mass, participants, including FMA past pupils and local community members, gathered to be ready to contribute to the cause of caring for our common home.
Right after the tree planting, the Federation of FMA Past Pupils, with Sr. Lyn Yap, FMA, started the outreach program in Barangay Banoyo, San Luis, Batangas. With the support of Malibiran Farm & Resort, they organized a simple catechesis program and distributed gifts to parents and children. This outreach intends to provide spiritual guidance and material support to the local community.
The Federation of FMA Past Pupils and Sr. Lyn Yap, FMA, plans to continue their environmental and community support efforts with more projects in the future. This tree-planting and outreach event promotes ecological awareness and sustainable practices while supporting local communities.
As the trees grow, they will symbolize our mission in protecting our planet, reflecting the spirit of ‘Laudato Si’ and our connection to nature. |

“Let the Journey Transform You: Unforgettable Archives from Japan”
Welcome to the Land of the Rising Sun,
Japan!
Our Japanese adventure extended beyond iconic landmarks like Tokyo and Shibuya. The true highlights were the deep connections forged with students from Salesian International School in Akabanedai and fellow delegates from around the world. Sharing stories, traditions, and delicious Japanese cuisine created lifelong bonds. Our warm welcome from the Yoshida family upon arrival at Narita Airport set the tone for an unforgettable experience. Our time at the Salesian International School was a cherished chapter, filled with cultural exchange and friendship. Our exploration of Tokyo encompassed iconic landmarks like Ueno Park, Kaminarimon Temple, Shibuya Crossing, and the vibrant districts of Harajuku and Odaiba. The city’s dynamic energy, coupled with the tranquility of its ancient temples, offered a captivating contrast. Beyond the tourist attractions, the heart of our experience lay in the connections forged with Japanese students and fellow international delegates. Shared laughter, navigating the metro, cooking together, and simply getting lost in the city deepened our friendships. These simple moments, more than any landmark, created lasting memories. We returned home with hearts full of cherished memories and a broadened worldview. This journey has shown us the power of connection and the importance of embracing diversity. It inspired us to build bridges, foster understanding, and create a world where differences are celebrated. Arigatou gozaimasu, Japan – Matane!! (Until we meet again!!)

ADMA Youth Camp
From May 26 to 28, 2023, a total of 268 students and facilitators participated in the ADMA Youth Camp. Aligned with the Rector Major’s 2023 Strenna, “As the Yeast in Today’s Human Family,” the camp aimed to instill Christian values in young people and empower them as active contributors to Papua New Guinea’s development. Originally established in 2008 as the 300 Youth for Mary by the late Fr. Valeriano Barbero, SDB, a pioneering Salesian missionary in Papua New Guinea, the initiative has evolved into the ADMA Youth. The annual camp continues to engage students from Catholic schools in Port Moresby, serving as a tribute to the beloved Fr. Val. This year’s camp focused on the Rector Major’s 2023 Strenna, “As Yeast in the Human Family.” Fr. Greg Bicomong, SDB, Provincial Superior of the PGS Vice Province, initiated the sessions with a presentation highlighting the global rise in crime, particularly in Papua New Guinea. He challenged the young participants to become agents of social change by embodying the Church’s social teachings within their families and communities.
The first day concluded with a Taizé prayer and confession service. The following day, Mrs. Sheryll Extra-Isoaimo, a Salesian Educator, offered a lay perspective on the Strenna, titled “To Be Lay and To Be Yeast.” Drawing from her experiences as a wife, mother, and volunteer, she emphasized the Ignatian concept of “magis,” or doing more. Inspired by God’s boundless love, she encouraged participants to strive for excellence in their lives and communities.
Following group discussions, schools developed plans to implement camp learnings, revitalize school Marian groups, and engage in local outreach. A highlight of the camp was a visit to the newly inaugurated Marian exhibit, a PGS Vice-Province initiative to foster devotion to Mary, Help of Christians.
The ADMA Youth Camp provided a transformative experience for young people, fostering spiritual growth, friendship, and a commitment to service. As one participant expressed, the camp deepened their faith and personal development. | ViCToria aihi and Sr. aliCe S. FulgenCio, FMa
