LETTER TO YOU Much has happened since we published our last issue, including a round-the-world trip to South Africa, followed by London Fashion Week. In January, a spur of the moment project saw me going to Thula Thula Private Game Reserve in SA, to work with the Lawrence Anthony Foundation on their 2012 Last Rhino Campaign. Whilst there, I was blessed to spend time with inspired Conservationist and Author, Lawrence Anthony. Referred to as ‘The Elephant Whisperer’ after his best-selling book, Lawrence is known for rehabilitating 15 rogue elephants that were due to be culled. This is the least of his many impressive conservation efforts, including rescuing animals in the Baghdad Zoo at the start of the Iraq war, and creating a foundation in South Africa that includes wildlife, environmental and community initiatives.To be in the company of this-larger-than-life man, and his beloved 6- ton elephants, was an experience of a lifetime.

Sadly, Lawrence suddenly passed away from a heart attack a few weeks after I interviewed him. I was the last journalist to go into the bush with him, and it is a gift I will always treasure.

My time with the Lawrence Anthony Foundation in South Africa took me to London, to co-produce Prophetik by Jeff Garner’s AW2012 runway show.

LAF and Coco Eco sponsored, and we had a whirlwind week creating a very special show, one of the few sustainable highlights of London Fashion Week.

Jeff is already a huge talent in his own right, and produces a stunning collection. What made this very special however, was a moving presentation by the

Lawrence Anthony Foundation, about the current rhinopoaching crisis in Africa. It was a privilege to be a part of this very special project for such a vital issue, and bring fashion with a cause to a highly visible platform such as London Fashion Week.

As we now publish our Wild Earth Issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, we highlight all things for our planet, to both raise awareness of some of our more pressing issues, as well as celebrate what’s good. Cover girl Eden Sher talks about her passion for making a difference, whilst Adrian Grenier, Peter Glatzer, and Sebastian Copeland grace our Men We Love column for their planetary efforts. Laurie David, Alexandra Cousteau, and contribution, and our fashion and beauty stories celebrate what’s hot for spring.

London Fashion Week has always been known as the cutting edge home of design, never failing to delight and surprise. In the burgeoning ethical fashion calendar, Estethica, as part of London Fashion Week, is one of the must-see eco fashion trade events on the calendar. With only ten labels showing and two collaborative projects, Estethica had a strong, focused, and juried collection of designers at this season’s event.

MONSOON High street giant Monsoon not only showcased their collection at Estethica, but also sponsors the event. The popular UK chain has a long history of supporting artisans and craftspeople from around the world. With a focus on artisanal workmanship at accessible price points, Monsoon manages to accommodate both, while simultaneously helping improve the lives of women and children in Asia through the Monsoon Trust. With tribal and folkloric inspirations, the collection is young, directional and easy-to-wear. Their bohemian roots still inform the company’s philosophy and business practices through support of ethical design trust to help support farmers make the transition to organic cotton production. The company works with organic cotton, women’s cooperatives overseen by NGO’s, and supports Fair-trade.

HENRIETTA LUDGATE Henrietta Ludgate’s luxury collection featured clean, highly tailored lines, with intriguing hemlines in classic black, in sharp contrast to the brilliant hues of the Spring Summer collection. A supporter of slow fashion, Ludgate’s understated silhouettes are haunting in their simplicity and sophistication, with a slight retro sensibility. Her distinctive and undeniably modern aesthetic features exquisite tailoring

JUNKY STYLING Junky Styling is an innovative design-led label founded by self taught designers Anoka Sanders and Kerry Seager in 1997. The entire collection is produced from the highest quality second hand clothing, which is deconstructed, re-cut and completely transformed, described by the New Yorker as ‘an eccentrically chic line of mutant couture’. With a focus on individuality, with no two garments exactly the same, a design concept described as ‘high fashion street couture’, Junky Styling specialize in reconstructing men’s wear into edgy, contemporary reconstructed women’s wear. Their work consists of a ‘Wardrobe Surgery’ service, where customers bring their own clothes in for transformation, a women’s ready-to-wear collection, a bespoke service for special occasions, with experimental off-the-peg pieces available through their East End store.

JOANNA CAVE Joanna Cave’s elegant jewelry creations are informed by tradition,

prestigious Central St Martin’s, Cave initially explored sustainability recycled silver as well as ethically sourced pearls. With a mesmerizing balance between boldness and delicacy, Cave’s Spring/Summer ley motifs reminiscent of traditional Indian block prints, exquisitely set off with bright colored silk threads and tassels. ADA ZANDITON Ada Zanditon’s vision is to create a unique conceptual narrative through her designs that evolve over time. VICTIM FASHION STREET Mei Hui Liu, the founder of Victim Fashion Street, has a street rebel’s eye for recycled materials. Her naïve punk approach to recycled fashion is her signature style, with a ten-year heritage. Combining vintage fabrics from multiple eras, Lui carefully crafts scraps and shreds of antique lace, creative patch-worked designs. With a hand sewing machine and a vin-

Her collection celebrates the heritage crafts of Sri Lanka, which she incorporates into her creations, thereby helping to support the craftspeople, as well as the craft. Eschewing the use of elastics, plastics, harmful dyes or metal in her eco-collection, Charini is inspired by her own ‘no-waste’ policy, with upcycled elastics forming the Victim Fashion Street basic element of the line. Hand woven silk, lace and satin sourced from artisan communities across Sri Lanka, are also incorporated into her collection. MAKEPIECE Sheep to chic knitwear company Makepiece produces a collection of eco knits, incorporating intricately braided knitted dresses, with color contrasting inserts, and lots of soft, cowled layering. The season’s color palette includes red, berry, midnight and sparse neutrals. Established in 2004 by Beate Kubitz and Nicola Sherlock-Windle in the Pennine town of Todmorden, Makepiece produces two seasonal collections a year. The collection incorporates dresses, separates and classic accessories featuring knitted shrugs, wraps and capes, as well as a collection of knitted wedding dresses. Makepiece designs are inspired by the Pennine landscape where it is created. The label is produced from 100% British wool, mohair and alpaca, land sheep. All colored yarns are dyed within a 20 miles radius from where they are knitted, to EU Standards, with no AZO dyes, or heavy metals.

PACHACUTI colors for Pachacuti are a combination of the great British countryside and the Ecuadorian mountains, and incorporate natural woodland greens, soft grays and earthy browns, with bursts of deep wine and burnt orange. Building on their classic heritage, this season’s variations on the classic fedora sit alongblended traditional artisanal skills, environmentally friendly materials and production with contemporary design for over 20 years. As slow fashion pioneers, Pachacuti add a twist to what is classic, and bring enduring design to seasonal trends to provide sustainable luxury. Their commitment is embodied in their name, which means “world upside-down” in Quechua, and describes their endeavor to address social and environmental injustices within the fashion supply chain.

I know you have been there. You are happily going about your day when you happen to get a glimpse of yourself in the mirror that stops you dead in your tracks. “Whoa,” you think to yourself, “since when do I have such deep creases in my forehead? And my eyes…are those crow’s feet? Why do I look fabulous summer years ago. You remember, the one you lived with reckless abandon? You see yourself, in a convertible with the top down, mini dress on, sun sizzling on your skin as you work on that perfect, Highway to meet your favorite girlfriend for eats… and let’s face it, drinks. Lots of them.

If you are anything like me, you wouldn’t take those days back for the world. (Well maybe just one or two of them.)

The fact is that the indulgent living of our youth makes us who we are today. But I will be honest; as much as I love the person that the years have made me, I would really rather not see the years on my face. Sure, a laugh line here or there is charming. sun damage, age spots, sagging skin and wrinkles, however, are not. So, how do we age gracefully in a world where we are bombarded with images of seemingly ageless celebrities on magazine covers, TVs, and billboards every day? With whom do we compare ourselves when we truly don’t know what “work” our peers have undergone to look the way they do?

A Free Spirit, On A Mission To Make Her Mark!

Eden Sher is not your typical young Hollywood actress. At 20 years old, she has already amassed an impressive TV resume, and can now be seen WRITTEN by: Anna Griffin as Sue Heck, the socially awkward early-teen middle daughter on ABC’s The Middle. However, when you meet Eden, there is clearly nothing awkward about her, and one is immediately taken with her huge zest for life, free spirit, and passionate quest to make her mark on the world.

Coco Eco Magazine: Eden, tell us about some of the eco practices in your life?

Eden Sher: On a holistic level, I just do things that are not wasteful.

Everything I eat is all local and organic, I recycle, and I’m trying to have a compost heap in my backyard. I think it’s also eco-friendly on another level, to be involved with your community. I am involved with an organization called $2 Shows that is all about getting the community together.

the earth. I learned that everything needs to be sustainable, and am now learning about farming, and how easy it is to have food be plentiful. It is not as hard as we like to make it seem. We just have to utilize what’s local. Whilst volunteering, I had enough time to see the country, explore, and stay with a host family so it was complete and total immersion.

I think that’s so important when you travel. You don’t want to be that American outsider.

CEM: Where else have you been?

CEM: What is $2 Shows? What does the organization do?

ES: My friend started it in high school. He began by putting on concerts in the backyard, to promote local charities and people who need help. It turned into this huge thing, and we started having mini Coachella’s in peoples’ back yards. We found out it was a big deal for people in communities to feel congratulated and exposed, and it gives a platform to local artists to express themselves. There are musicians, vendors, and local artists. Admission is two dollars, and all the proceeds go to whatever charity we are promoting that day.

CEM: What are some of the other things you like to do? You mentioned travel and volunteering earlier?

ES: I volunteered in Nicaragua twice, went to India last summer, and this year am going to Tanzania. In India I did a teaching program, and taught pre-school children English, and played with them. They have this child-minding facility for kids before they go to school, so you’re looking after children aged one through four, and it’s a small room and pretty dirty.

They’ve become quite reliant on outside volunteers, and year-round there are people helping from all over the world who come together to help, and have a really good time.

“I wanted to leave my mark, and to help out in some way. It was important to affect another person positvely while I was there.”

ES: I love to travel. The volunteering sort of became secondary, but I really have this dire urge to explore new territories, learn new things, and meet new people. I think it’s intrinsic in me, but also think it’s human nature to want to know things about other people.

CEM: How did this discovery begin?

ES: It started when I was 15 and took a trip to Nicaragua. I felt that if I was going to visit this place, I wanted to leave my mark and to help out in some way. It was important to affect another person positively whilst I was there. I did a volunteer trip, and had so much fun. It’s almost like the hard work made it that much more gratifying.

CEM: And Tanzania?

ES: Probably the same thing. I really liked it. I did like learning about sustainable agriculture, but it was hands-on manual labor, and I’m probably not going to become a farmer!

CEM: You have plans to climb Kilimanjaro?

ES: Yes. The goal in Tanzania is to do a three-week volunteering program, and then do the ten-day trek. I have been training for this hike to Kilimanjaro, and it is so intense. You have to climb stairs two-three times a week, and then you have to carry a backpack with rocks in it. I’m not doing any altitude training, just really deep breathing exercises to expand my lungs, then cardio and weight training for my legs. It’s crazy!

CEM: What did you do as a volunteer?

ES: We were working in sustainable agriculture, which taught me a lot about how food is grown, and affected how I eat here at home.

everyday and love what you do. It’s a rare thing that I try to never take for granted. I love everyone I work with, and really love my role, and know I will look back on this time and say, “Wow! That was a beautiful time in my life.” I’m trying to not forget it now and can currently say I am having the best time. shooting it, and once it’s all done I will submit it to festivals. I am directing it and one of my best friends is starring in it. It’s all my best friends. One is the Director of Photography, another is the Producer, and then others are helping as PA’s and Grips. I am also doing a movie with my friend Charlie McDermott, who is on the show, this summer. Charlie actually wrote it and it is called Imagigary. It’s about a kid who goes to college and is lonely, so re-imagines his imaginary friends from childhood. I’ve got a pretty sweet role in it.

CEM: Amazing. What else really excites you?

ES: I love yoga and started when I was about twelve. I’m a yoga nerd! I began in eighth grade, and have loved it ever since. I did it everyday in India, which was a meditative process, and there you only do yoga to get closer to the Gods.

It sounds clichéd but it’s really calmed me down, and I start each day with a very clear intention. If that intention is about love: To love life, to love what you do, and the people around you, you will focus that energy. It’s surprising to just have that in everything. And I do. When I start to forget that, I take a moment and deep breath to remind myself of how fortunate I am to be living the life I am right now. I love it!

From volunteering to traveling the globe, acting, directing, yoga, composting, and everything in between, Eden’s passion for life will take her far. After a really fun shoot, you can’t help but wonder what’s next for this bright young star, but whatever it is, we have no doubt that it will be larger than life. Alyson McPhee, a veterinary nurse, decided to take a short career break to South Africa to do a 2-month volunteer placement at a rehab center called Moholoholo. Two months turned into a longer stint, and now she has been looking after two baby southern white rhinos named Thabo and Nthombi for two years.

The daughter of media mogul Ted Turner is a national environmental advocate, a mother and eco-living expert dedicated to creating a healthy and sustainable future for our children. But only is pollution causing global warming, but it is also making our children sick,” she says.

“Our children have become the ‘canaries in the coalmine.’ We must take the necessary steps to reduce the harmful chemicals in our air, land, water and our own bodies,” Laura deeply states.

She advocates strongly about keeping toxic chemicals out of

Rhinos are killed by poachers for their horns. In 2008, 83 rhinos were poached, last year in 2011, 448 rhino were poached and so far 80 have been killed this year. All for the horn, which is only has medical value (it does not).

There is an immediate immense challenge to stopping the extinction of the southern white rhino. Thabo was found abandoned at a day old in the free state with his umbilical cord still attached. He was severely dehydrated and constipated. Nthombi at 5 months was found in the Kruger area after her mom was gauged by a rhino-bull.

When Alyson arrived Thabo was on his way to his new home at Thula Thula, an exclusive game reserve in Zululand. Nthombi came in her 2nd week and Alyson immediately started looking after her. After 2 months Nthombi and Alyson went to Thula Thula to help settle her in. It did not take long for Nthombi and Thabo to fall in love and become inseparable. Thula Thula created the perfect home for their further rehabilitation into the wild. Thabo and Nthombi stay completely protected with full-armed guards 24/7 ever since a recent poaching.

Laura is working to get the word out in order to protect our natural systems that support all life like our air, water, natural environment and food supplies. MARGO MARRONE

For many of us, a look through our medicine cabinets and makeup bags would uncover a plethora of products full of toxins and known carcinogens. Margo Marrone wants to change that. Co-founder and director of THE ORGANIC while studying for her Pharmacy degree in London.

The slow, painful and daily death of one of the planets most majestic creatures, the Rhinoceros, who has lived on the ear th for 60 million years is an alarming wake up call. At the current rate of about one death every 20 hours, these rhinos will be extinct in 10 years. How has this tragedy happened? And what are Authorities, Governments and animal rights activists doing to stop it?

There are 5 different species of Rhinoceros. These harmless animals live in Africa and southern Asia. The Javan rhino species was declared extinct in October 2011. The only predator to the animal is a human poacher. The IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List declares that three of the species are critically endangered.

The current population of rhinos in Africa is 20,150 southern white rhino and 4,200 black rhinos. Over the past 45 years, poachers have wiped out 100,000 rhino in Africa. Reserve own92

I sit here once again, a citizen of the planet and resident one of the most poorly planned and wasteful cities in America (Los Angeles). I attempt to write an article that enlightens yet tells the truth about a complicated subject; power. And one more time I realize the frailties of the human condition; mine included. I have so many questions. I am constantly in what is “wrong” when it comes to balancing the environment, the economy and the truth. What I do know is we can all do better. I think matter who is in charge, “power” can corrupt.

The eco-friendly community is adamantly against mining and oil production yet windmills, solar dryer, smart cars and smart phones just to name a few of our creature comforts, are all products of mining. Should we give back (or just give up?) our jewels and diamonds in the name of preserving the environment? Should we eschew computers and Internet access to preserve 102

power? Even the production of our eco fashion can sometimes be toxic (just less so). It is produced with electricity and transported by fossil fuels. Any time we manufacture anything we are increasing consumption, so where should we draw the line? Should we go back to using whale oil to light our lamps instead of fossil fuels? And why isn’t oil considered organic? It comes from Mother Earth too.

By 1950, GM had been involved in the replacement of more than one hundred street car operations- including those of Los Angles, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Salt Lake City – with GM manufactured buses. A federal grand jury found the giant and unfortunate result of this thinking was that Americans would no longer have transit options and that the car would become a prerequisite to survival with disastrous consequences for energy consumption.

If we allowed new technologies to proceed could we make the world a better place?

Global Green USA celebrated its 9th Annual Pre-Oscar® party on February 22nd at the haute night spot Avalon Hollywood, to launch the Citizen Entrepreneur Contest for the 20th Anniversary Rio Earth Summit and raise awareness and funds for Green Schools and Communities.
