What’s up? ICE USA!

«The North American converting community will once again converge on Florida, April 9–11, 2013, when thousands of industry peers – suppliers, technical experts, buyers and other converting professionals – will travel to Orlando to attend ICE USA 2013, the International Converting Exhibition. The word has spread, and the industry has responded,» explains Bob Chiricosta, Director North American Exhibitions – ICE USA. Indeed, ICE USA has been selected as one of the «2011 TSNN Top 250» trade shows by Trade Show Network News. The first-time event, organized by Mack Brooks in 2011, showcased nearly 300 exhibitors over 50,000 sq ft. This year’s event promises to outdo the last one in more than one respect: more than 100 new exhibitors will be joining the over 200 returning exhibitors at ICE USA 2013.

Many of the new exhibitors have also reserved larger exhibit space to display the running machinery they will be bringing to the show. Some of the companies who will be exhibiting at the biennial show for the first time include: Nordmeccanica, Totani America, Flint Group, Flexographic Products, TGW International, H.B. Fuller, Flexo Wash and EyeC- America. They will be joining such well known ICE USA Alumni as: Comexi, Maxcess, Daetwyler, New Era, Montalvo, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Nordson, Double E, ISRA VISION, Sonoco, Uteco, Catbridge, Advanced Photonix and many other global converting equipment suppliers. Bob Chiricosta enthused, «We are especially excited that so many exhibitors are bringing and running equipment,» and added that attendee registration is also well ahead of ICE USA 2011 at the same point in time before the show.

ASK THE EXPERTS. Subject to availability, five leading industry experts will be available free-of-charge for private, 15-minute, one-on-one consultations during the 2013 show in Orlando to help attendees find solutions to their specific technical and operational challenges. Show management encourages attendees to pre-schedule these sessions online in advance to ensure they get the times they want. The experts each represent critical segments of the converting marketplace: Dr. Edwin D. Cohen is a renowned technical consultant in all aspects of the web coating process. He is Technical Consultant for AIMCAL 2

and President of the International Society of Coating Science and Technology. Kelly Robinson, founder of Electrostatic Answers, an engineering consulting company dedicated to eliminating injury and waste from static electricity, will answer questions concerning static. He looks back on 25 years of industrial problem solving experience. Dr. Dave Roisum will consult regarding web handling & converting. He is a principal of Finishing Technologies Inc., providing consulting services to more than 300 clients who convert or manufacture paper, film, foil, nonwovens, textiles, and many other materials. Dave Rumson will provide consulting on slitting & rewinding issues. He is a Slitting Educator/Consultant with 17 years of experience in slitting and winding gained with Dienes Corporation and Parkinson Technologies. Vincent DiTrolio will be available for questions on flexographic printing. He is founder and CEO of DiTrolio Flexographic Institute, and a highly regarded flexo industry expert and pioneer in formal press operator training.

TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE THEATER. This feature is new for 2013.

It provides the exhibitors with the opportunities to provide information about their new products, solutions and technologies to all attendees. These presentations are provided to visitors free of charge. The theater is located on the show floor.

EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS. Prior to the show and during the show a series of conferences and seminars will be running, making in-depth information available to show visitors. «Converters from around the world will find these seminars extremely valuable,» said Bob Chiricosta. «There is no other forum in the world where they can access such a diverse and broad range of industry knowledge.»

The 3-day program organized by AIMCAL (Association of International Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators), is divided into 3 tracks: track 1 – Web Coating, Laminating, and Printing, track 2 – Web Handling and Converting, track 3 – Adhesives and Adhesion. The challenging keynote presentation at the beginning of each day is free to all registered ICE USA attendees. Paul Gaster, director of Flexible Packaging at PCI Films Consulting Ltd, will kick off the Keynote Presentations on Tuesday, April 9, with a presentation titled «Opportunities and Threats In The Global Flexible Packaging Market.» He will also deliver the wrap-up keynote presentation, on Thursday morning, April 11, with another insightful industry outlook presentation titled «BOPET and BOPP Film Trends to 2016.» On Wednesday morning, April 10, Thomas Blaige, chairman/CEO of Blaige & Co., will address the financial outlook for the packaging industry during his keynote presentation titled «Merger and Acquisition Trends in the Converting Industry.» The keynote sessions take place from 9:00–10:00 a.m. It will be followed by three concurrent 2-hour technical sessions (one in each track) led by wellknown industry experts. Attendees will have sufficient time to visit the show floor and to partake in all the other activities available.

The Pre-Show Seminars will take place on Monday, April 8.

Individual fees have been established for each program and include a three-day pass to the exhibit floor. CEMA, the Converting Equipment Manufacturers Association will be holding their Fundamentals for Converters seminars in two concurrent sessions, the Coating & Laminating Technical Seminar and the Slitting and Rewinding Seminar. Both are condensed versions of their usual 2-day seminars created especially for ICE USA. CEMA is returning to the pre-show conference. Also returning to the pre-show is TAPPI who will bring together the leading experts in the field of flexible packaging and new technology developments to share their insights on the emerging areas of nanotechnology within packaging. The three-session event is the first ever collaboration between two of the association’s premier technical divisions – PLACE (Polymers, Laminations, Coatings and Extrusions) and the Nanotechnology Division, and is designed to provide unique perspectives on the most recent innovations in the use of nanotechnology in packaging. The first session highlights «Innovations in Preparing Polymer-Based Nanomaterials» to improve the mechanical and barrier properties of flexible packaging materials. The second session features «Innovations in Traditional Barrier Enhancements» for packaging films. The third session presents the tactical topics of «Brand Launch Strategies, Shelf Appeal Enhancement, and Brand Authentication» for innovatively packaged consumer products.

COATING AND CONVERTING EXPANDABLE MODULAR PILOT COATER.

Faustel will feature its LabMaster™. This is a «plug and play» pilot coater. It arrives preassembled on an interchangeable modular frame so it can be configured for a variety of standard and optional coating methods. A complete pilot line, the Labmaster includes two unwinds, roll coater module, dryer, dry bond laminator with chill rolls, and rewind all with integrated drives and controls. An array of coating and laminating methods can be added to satisfy a broad range of applications. The LabMaster™ functions as a narrow web production machine processing webs up to 300 mm wide, accommodating material rolls up to 300 mm OD, and running at speeds up to 30 m/min. Base configuration includes a single-zone 3-meter dryer.

And an additional 3-meter dryer zone can be added at any time. The machine is compact for easy installation, transportation, and relocation. It requires minimal on-site installation with a single-point interface for electrical, exhaust, and compressed air.

New to the show are RadTech, AWA and PTSC. The Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PTSC) will hold a technical seminar on Understanding and Selecting PSA Tapes for the Converting Industry. Alexander Watson Associates (AWA) will present the DecTec™ 2013 Seminar, providing ICE USA attendees with a quality program to review product decoration and labeling in its broader context, as a prime component in packaging. The presentations will provide up-to-date information on the markets and its evolving technologies with both national and international perspectives. RadTech, a non-profit organization committed to the advancement of ultraviolet and electron beam technology, will present a special session on «Enabling Innovation in Packaging with Ultraviolet (UV) & Electron Beam (EB) Curable Inks, Coatings, & Adhesives». Leading suppliers and users of UV (ultraviolet) and EB (electron beam) curable inks, coatings, and adhesives will discuss some of the current and future trends and applications in press technology, special effect ink/coatings, and other sustainable and innovative initiatives.

NEW FLEXO PRESS. Bielloni Converting will showcase its new TELIA 10 FSC flexo press, which permits a complete 10 color job change in less than 5 minutes and with less than 20 meters of waste material. Numerous other innovations include the new in-between color drying system.

Its 4-air blade system makes it very efficient. Thanks to the quick and easy removal system of the drying boxes,

maintenance is fast. The new wash up system includes viscometers with temperature control and stabilization. The new drying bridge grants optimum drying performances at very high speed and reduced energy consumption due to the revolutionary design of the dual-flux air exchange system. However, the real innovation in this machine is the anilox sleeve and plate sleeve mandrel support

system which is completely different from all the conventional manual opening systems that require tipping over of the support to extract the sleeve. The internationally patented «FSC system» allows the supports to open without turning them over; the operator, after locking the system followed by the simple pulling of a mechanical lever, unlocks the supports and lets them slide sideways. The advantages to this system are very fast job changes that are effortless for the operator. The supports with automatic lubrication and triple bearings are just as sturdy as the supports on the opposite side, i.e. the drive side, as no turning over is required. Both plate sleeve and anilox mandrel holders use the same 180 mm thick support, so no carbon fiber mandrels are required. The ball screws for anilox and plate sleeve support are positioned in a perpendicular axis to the cylinder rotation center. As this set up is rigid, vibration problems at high speed are avoided because the screws support the dynamic thrust of the rotating mandrels completely.

CHUCKS, SHAFTS AND BRAKES. Double E is the exclusive distributor of Gavo Meccanica core cutters in the Americas. As such, the company will be displaying a fully functional TCAG automatic core cutter/core joiner at ICE USA. It cuts various diameters, types, and lengths, and uses

patented joining technology to eliminate core waste. Demonstrations will be conducted throughout the show. Its own DF2000 torque-activated core chuck and lightweight carbon fiber core shafts are just the beginning of what Double E offers.

Mario Cotta slitting products (knife holders, slitter positioning systems, blades, anvils), Re brakes, web guiding systems, tension control systems, and video inspection systems are also part of what Double E can offer. The company’s newest partner, IES, has designed the CLEV-12 torque activated core shaft that requires no air for activation. The shaft offers true concentricity without the need for air. It grips the core automatically as torque is applied. This shaft, along with differential rewind shafts from IES, will also be on display in the booth. Double E’s other partners are also debuting brand new technology at the ICE show. The revolutionary «EOS» (Electronic Operative Slitting) electronic slitting positioning system from Mario Cotta has never been seen before in the USA. Like the Gavo core cutter, it will be available for demonstrations throughout the show. Re’s new «Extreme» brake will also be shown. This brake yields exceptional pad life in a compact package. cast film line series, which can have 2, 3 or 4 meter net width, can be equipped with a new updated version of the well tested automatic winder Rotowind 2000 for the production of hand and machine rolls, on 2" and 3" carton cores. The working speed is well over 600 m/min for 12micron film and over 500 m/min for 8–9 micron ultrathin film. One of the outstanding features of this winder is the 17" very short roll-change cycle time. On request, in the same type of line machine and jumbo rolls, it can be equipped with the new automatic winder model ARX 2012. It is designed for a mechanical speed of 800 m/min. The ARX winder is available in its modules of 1500 and 2000 mm net widths: for the 3 or 4 meter lines the design foresees a twin configuration.

Among other novelties introduced at the show, Dolci Extrusion will present a special tailor made cast film line for the production of film for lithium-ion batteries.

This special film (produced with specific resins based on PP and Polyolefilms) is used as a separator between Anode and Cathode and the extrusion technology is based (among other steps) on a special

Pieces can be formed to actually snap or fit together. ABS prototypes can withstand rigorous functional testing and retain their exact dimensions. And, ABS models can be drilled, tapped, sanded, even painted.» In live demonstrations at the booth, Spooner industries is offering visitors a chance to see contactless web turning as provided by its Air Turn. The model will allow convertors to see the capabilities of the patented Spooner flotation nozzles on a very small scale. Since the invention of the Air Turn in 1983 by Spooner engineers, the original design has been continually refined to improve its operation

The systems are designed to detect defects through 100% inspection on printed and unprinted material making an important contribution to increase processing efficiency. This model is Laem System’s response to the modern converter’s need to improve the quality of finished rolls while drastically increasing productivity and efficiency of the slitting operation. The main «S»-wrap draw roller guarantees a very wide wrap angle around it; together with the nip roller, it assures the most stable and precise handling of the web material at high speeds. When processing delicate materials, like cold-seal laminates, or adhesive materials for labels, the S-wrap manages to pull the material without a nip roller, hence protecting the product and granting high quality. Processing Thick-Film Screen Printed Metalon® CuO Reduction Ink with PulseForge® Tools

est in the electronics community, as a lower-cost alternative to silver which is currently used. Recognizing that while not all copper inks are truly a cost-effective replacement for silver, one low-cost product currently available is the Metalon ICI-series of CuO inks. These inks are converted with PulseForge photonic curing tools from copper oxide to copper on low cost, flexible, and temperature sensitive substrates. This paper reviews details of successful application of these thick-film screen printed copper reduction inks, including the conversion to copper through photonic curing. Photonic curing is a transient process that can heat the deposited circuit to very high temperatures without heating and damaging the underlying substrate. Screen printing is used to produce patterns of the Metalon ICI-series CuO ink greater than 10 μm thick on paper substrates. The printed oxide patterns are converted to conductive copper circuits using composite pulses on the PulseForge system. Sheet resistances as low as 11 mΩ /sq were achieved. Here we demonstrate that the lower circuit resistance enables much higher current carrying capacity, which is important for a wide range of active systems. Currents as high as 1.4 A can be carried through a 1/16" wide print that was deposited as an approximately 50 μm thick layer of CuO. BACKGROUND. Photonic curing has become an established pro-

cessing technique widely used for processing high-temperature materials on low-temperature substrates, using microsecondscale pulsed light from flashlamps.1–6 The printed electronics industry is turning from traditional thermal processing to using photonic curing to process conductive inks, including those of nanocrystal materials, on temperature sensitive substrates like paper, plastic, or fabric.7–9 Also recognizing that not all curing equipment is comparable in capability, we will show how the PulseForge tools are used to deliver the necessary pulse power, energy, and architecture to effectively cure deep into the printed circuits. Specifically, recent work has shown that a composite (segmented) pulse structure, as depicted in Figure 1, is much better at achieving greater cure depth of thick-film printed circuits than a conventional square pulse structure.10 Delivering such a pulse structure with the necessary power and energy levels was not possible without the innovation and the technology built into the PulseForge tools.1–2 The PulseForge tools are able to turn the lamps on and off over very short time scales, creating pulses as short as 25 μs, and as close together as 20 μs. These fast modulation times are used to create better drying response in thick-film materials, such as those produced with screen printing. The authors have deter14

mined that the pulse shaping capability, when combined with high power delivery, enable optimization of the pulse condition to enhance the desired reactions through thermal control of the system. This is especially true for processing depositions which are greater than 10 μm thick, such as from screen printing.

Metalon ICI-series CuO reduction inks differ fundamentally from conventional Cu inks.9 Because the CuO inks are based entirely on the use of copper oxide, the ink is already at its lowest oxidation state and is therefore completely stable under ambient conditions. In contrast, inks based on copper nanoparticles will degrade over time due to the oxidation of the Cu or require special handling and storage. The CuO inks are also based on the use of water, in contrast to organic solvents used in other copper inks. The CuO inks can also be processed in open air, in ambient room conditions, and do not require the use of reduction or inert atmospheres.

METHODS. Metalon ICI-021 CuO reduction ink was screen printed in a 115 square pattern (7 1/8" long and 1/16" wide) on bright white copy paper (Office Impressions, 20 lbs) with an 80 mesh flat bed screen purchased from Sefar. The thickness of the dried CuO print was measured to be 60 μm. The resulting prints were dried overnight under ambient conditions before being processed on the PulseForge 3300-X2 photonic curing system equipped with XP-492 lamps; the pulse structure depicted in Figure 1 was used. All processing was performed under ambient conditions at a conveyor speed of 30 ft/min. After processing, the cured circuits were covered with a thin layer of fixative spray to prevent re-oxidation of the Cu circuit. The radiant expoCopyright Coating International 2013

sure of each pulse was measured using a bolometer. The thickness of the dried prints and paper substrates were measured with a Mahr Extramess 2000 digital comparator. The total resistance of the circuit after photonic curing was measured with a Fluke 175 True RMS Multimeter. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were collected with a Zeiss microscope equipped with an InLens detector operating at a 5 kV accelerating voltage. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed on a Rigaku R-Axis SPIDER diffractometer equipped with a Cu K radiation (λ = 1.54059 Å) source and an image plate area detector. The current capacity testing was performed with a BK Precision model 9123 programmable DC power supply. In order to standardize the current capacity testing, the samples were suspended in air to minimize heat conductive heat transfer and normalize the heat loss due to convective heat transfer.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. Metalon ICI-021 is screen printed into uniform and defect-free circuits. The ICI-021 contains irregularly shaped CuO flakes of varying sizes and a thermally-activated reducing agent package. Figure 2A shows how the polydispersed flakes form a densely packed print. Figure 2B shows that on a larger scale, the prints are featureless and uniform. As shown in Figure 2C, the photonic curing process significantly alters the morphology of the printed circuit. After photonic processing, the Cu generated from the reduction of CuO sinters into a denser film on a microscopic scale. However, on a larger scale, Figure 2D, the film exhibits features resulting from volume loss due to gas generation during the reduction process as well as loss of free volume due to sintering. The cured circuit looks non-uniform but it is reduced to conductive Cu throughout the film. A cross-sectional microscopy image of the processed circuit, Figure 3, reveals that although only the top surface is fully sintered, the print is reduced to Cu deep below the surface.

Previous work established that CuO on paper substrates could be processed at thicknesses of up to ~50 μm. Although thicker prints could be made, the energy required to react deeper into the circuit damaged the paper substrate.10

Analysis of XRD spectra of the printed ICI-021 circuits at different stages of processing reveals how the photonic curing process impacts the compositional and crystallographic makeup of the print. The spectrum in Figure 4(i) shows that as-deposited prints are composed completely of monoclinic CuO. The reducers present in the ink are not crystalline and are not represented in the Copyright Coating International 2013

XRD data. The threshold of conversion to face-centered cubic (FCC) Cu is reached at around a radiant exposure of 5.6 J/cm2, Figure 4(ii). At this stage, only a small amount of Cu was present in the film and the circuit was not conductive. Increasing the radiant exposure to 6.8 J/cm2 produced conductive circuits (45 mΩ /sq) and a dominant presence of FCC Cu, Figure 4(iii).

A further increase of radiant exposure to 9.8 J/cm2 results in more conductive circuits (20 mΩ /sq) and a film with a majority FCC Cu, Figure 4(iv). For fully cured circuits, a small fraction of body-centered cubic (BCC) Cu2O was present, but no residual monoclinic CuO was detected. When the radiant exposure was increased even more (up to 11.5 J/cm2) overcuring of the print occurred and the circuit was broken (no longer conductive).

This change is accompanied by a darkening of the circuit and a re-oxidation of the reduced Cu. The spectrum in Figure 4v shows that the re-oxidized Cu was in the form of BCC Cu2O.

dashed line in Figure 5 is a fit to the current carrying capacity, e.g. failure point, of each circuit. As is typical with the actioning of a circuit, failure initiates at local defects in either the trace or the substrate. The typical I2R power dissipated in the circuit at failure was 2–3 W independent of the sheet resistance of the trace. This suggests the failure was related to the temperature at which the circuit attained from joule heating. Since the area of the trace was 2.8 cm2, this corresponds to ~1 W/cm2 at failure. Using SimPulseTM thermal stack simulation software (resident on every PulseForge tool), we balanced the joule heating of the circuit with the natural convection losses on both sides of the stack to calculate that the temperature reached at failure was ~200 °C. This is not unexpected as it is just below the thermal decomposition temperature of the substrate.

When approaching the current limit, the circuit heats up at a single point and oxidizes, or leads to burning of the paper substrate. Overall, the current capacity of the circuit is based on the resistance of the tested circuit and the frequency of defects in the circuit. The circuit is capable of carrying higher currents when the circuit resistance is lower and the defect frequency is less. The circuits shown in Figure 5 were relatively defect free and thus each failed at a similar power level. We were able to demonstrate current carrying capacity of up to 1.4 A in a 14 mΩ /sq print. Circuit design and cure depth play important roles in determining the current capacity of the circuit. An objective of the current development work is to use the higher current capacity of the printed Cu prints to build power delivery circuits. These results allow us to predict the current carrying capacity of other prints as the sheet resistance of our circuits continues to be reduced.

For this reason, screen printing and curing thicker depositions is important to build higher power circuits. Figure 5 plots how the current carrying capacity of the circuit changes with changes to the curing depth in the print. The depth of cure and the resistance of the circuits depended on the radiant exposure used for the processing. The

equipment. The combination of the two provides a route to printing highly conductive circuits on low cost and flexible substrates.

We have demonstrated the printing and curing of thick circuits on paper substrates. By using thermal simulation (with the SimPulseTM thermal stack simulation, developed in-house and discussed in previous publications7,10) and pulse shaping, we identified improved processing parameters for achieving more thorough curing of thick-film printed circuits. The deeper cure results in higher conductance circuits with very high current capacities. Sheet resistances as low as 11 mΩ /sq were obtained.

We have also demonstrated that circuits with a slightly higher sheet resistance, 14 mΩ /sq, could carry up to 1.4 A of current without degradation.

Stretchable battery closes the loop on flexible circuits

R

esearchers at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed stretchable batteries that can be used to power a new generation of flexible electronics. The batteries will allow stretchable electronic devices to be used anywhere, including inside the human body where they could monitor anything from brain waves to heart activity, succeeding where flat, rigid batteries would fail.

Rogers have demonstrated the battery that continues to work – powering a commercial light-emitting diode – even when stretched, folded, twisted and mounted on a human elbow. The stretchable battery can deliver power and voltage similar to a conventional lithium-ion battery of the same size, the researchers said, but the flexible battery can stretch up to three times its original size and still function. The flexible lithium-ion battery completes the flexible electronics package with a cordless power source1.

«Batteries are particularly challenging because, unlike electronics, it’s difficult to scale down their dimensions without significantly reducing performance,» Rodgers commented. «We start with a lot of battery components side by side in a very small space, and we connect them with tightly packed, long wavy lines,» Huang said. «These wires provide the flexibility. When we stretch the battery, the wavy interconnecting lines unfurl, much like yarn unspooling. And we can stretch the device a great deal and still have a working battery.» The battery can work for eight to nine hours and can then be recharged wirelessly, they said.

In their paper, researchers introduce a set of materials and design concepts for a rechargeable lithium ion battery technology that exploits thin, low modulus silicone elastomers as substrates, with a segmented design in the active materials, and unusual «self-similar» interconnect structures between them.

The result enables reversible levels of stretchability up to 300 percent, while maintaining capacity densities of ~1.1 mAh cm-2.

Stretchable wireless power transmission systems provide the means to charge these types of batteries, without direct physical contact. Renowned for their pioneering work with semiconductor materials and flexible, stretchable electronics, Rogers and his colleagues have applied their expertise to devise technology solutions across such broad fields as solar power, bioin-

tegrated electronics, sensing, thin film metrology, and fiber optics. Incorporating battery power into these flexible systems closes the loop that will enable the technology to be used broadly. Initial targets for the technology include medical applications, but there are other applications for bendy batteries such as wearable solar cells and electric-eye cameras that can produce studio-quality photographs.

New plastic electronics can greatly reduce food waste worldwide THE VERY FIRST PRINTED ADC. The researchers have succeeded in making two different plastic ADCs (analog-to-digital converters). Each converts analog signals, such as the output value measured by a sensor, into digital form. One of these new devices is the very first printed ADC ever made. «This paves the way toward large area sensors on plastic films in a cost-effective way through printing manufacturing approaches», says Isabelle Chartier, Printed Electronics Business developer at CEA-Liten.

illions of tons of food are thrown away each year because the ‹best before› date has passed. But this date is always a cautious estimate, which means a lot of still-edible food is thrown away. Wouldn’t it be handy if the packaging could ‹test› whether the contents are still safe to eat? Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology, Universitá di Catania, CEA-Liten and STMicroelectronics have invented a circuit that makes this possible: a plastic analog-digital converter. This development brings plastic sensor circuits costing less than one euro cent within reach. Beyond food, these ultra-low-cost plastic circuits have numerous potential uses, including pharmaceuticals. The invention was presented last week at the ISSCC in San Francisco, the world’s most important conference on solid-state circuits.

LESS THAN ONE CENT. To fight food waste, producers could include

an electronic sensor circuit in their packaging to monitor the acidity level of the food. The sensor circuit could be read with a scanner or with a mobile phone to show the freshness of your steak, or whether your frozen food was defrosted. Researcher Eugenio Cantatore of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e): «In principle that’s all already possible, using standard silicon ICs. The only problem is they’re too expensive. They easily cost ten cents. And that cost is too much for a one euro bag of crisps.

We’re now developing electronic devices that are made from plastic rather than silicon. The advantage is you can easily include these plastic sensors in plastic packaging.» The plastic semiconductor can even be printed on all kinds of flexible surfaces, which makes it cheaper to use. And it makes sensor circuits costing less than one eurocent achievable.

MISSING LINK. The new plastic ADCs bring applications in the food and pharmaceuticals industries within reach. A sensor circuit consists of four components: the sensor, an amplifier, an ADC to digitize the signal and a radio transmitter that sends the signal to a base station. The plastic ADC has been the missing link; the other three components already exist. «Now that we have all of the pieces, we need the integration,» says Cantatore.

He expects that it will still take at least five years before we can expect to see the new devices on supermarket shelves. Other potential applications are in pharmaceuticals, man-machine interfaces and in ambient intelligence systems in buildings or in transport.

COMPLEX MATHEMATICS. Creating this development was no

easy task. The electrical characteristics of ‹ordinary transistors› are highly predictable, while those of plastic transistors vary greatly. «All plastic transistors behave differently in the low-cost production processes at low temperatures,» explains Cantatore.

«That makes it much more difficult to use them in devices. You need complex mathematical models to be able to predict their behavior accurately.» The printed ADC circuit offers a resolution of four bits, and has a speed of two hertz. The circuits printed

by CEA-Liten include more than 100 n- and p-type transistors and a resistance level on transparent plastic substrates. The carrier mobility of the printed transistors is above the amorphous silicon widely used in the display industry.

he commercialization of the technology, covering broadly organic, inorganic, thin film and flexible nanotechnologies will take center stage at Printed Electronics Europe taking place from April 17–18 at the International Congress Centrum in Berlin, Germany. This event features over 200 presentations and 100 exhibiting companies. Attendees have access to all the conference tracks, and a combined tradeshow at their fingertips. A choice of 14 different Masterclasses covering Printed Electronics and all related technologies will be provided on April 16 and 19 in a morning and an afternoon session. In the closing keynotes, the value chain of inkjet printing conductive inks and the impact printed electronics will have on future manufacturing will be discussed.

THE TRADESHOW. The tradeshow runs alongside the conference

tracks and takes place from April 17–18. Over 100 companies from 20 different countries will be presenting their expertise on the topic. Highlights of the tradeshow will be:

Demonstration street. Demonstration Street will show products and prototypes based on Printed Electronics. It will include printed flexible displays such as posters, e-readers, audio paper, interactive games, OLED displays, electronics in fabrics, interactive printed controls and menus, printed RFID and much more.

Visitors to «Demonstration Street» will have the opportunity to closely examine samples, prototypes, and commercial products.

Manufacturing Street. Manufacturing Street will bring together substrate suppliers, printers, post print handlers, testers and integrators. In a live demonstration the manufacturing chain will be aligned in a step by step process on production ready equipment. As the equipment is being set up, used, and all the process steps made, experts will talk visitors through everything that is happening.

Production and manufacturing forum. Scheduled for the full day on April 18, presentations will cover the whole value chain, printing, lamination, substrate handling, curing and finishing processes, including materials. It will be held at the tradeshow theater. The session is aimed at those intending to manufacture printed electronics, or who supply materials or equipment for creating printed electronics. It will also be useful for printers who wish to understand their opportunities in printed electronics and how the equipment is being integrated as well as for companies who want to meet organizations that can help them manufacture products.

Others are able to design simple, cheap yet elegant devices such as Printechnologics’ Touchcode, with tens of millions of devices already in use. IDTechEx forecast that it will take another five years for the market for electronic and electrical smart packaging devices to achieve sales of $200 million, but thereafter will grow to $1.45 billion in 2023.

Outlook for Smart Packaging. «It has been a slow path to commercialize smart packaging. Despite strong needs such as the aging population, tougher legislation, huge waste, more demanding consumers and concerns about safety and crime, commercial success has been mixed. The topic encompasses chemical, electrical and electronic features in packaging. By volume, the most successful and sustainable uses have been chemical time temperature indicators (TTIs), mandated on vaccines such as polio and battery testers used on several brands…» states Raghu Das, CEO, IDTechEx, as he sums up the findings also published in his company’s report «Smart Packaging Comes To Market: Brand Enhancement with Electronics 2013–2023» which will be discussed in his keynote speech at the show.

There have been many successful products, but most are seasonal – for a promotion or for the lifetime of a particular short-lived product, such as the MWV cigarette carton that lit up (approximately 1 million sold), or liquor bottles with electroluminescent displays, or the McDonalds tray liner with conductive ink to make an interactive game. Despite these challenges, there are several new factors to take into account: For one, consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies, which have mostly faired extremely well during the recession, with many at all-time high valuations, are actively developing concepts and prototypes of electronic smart packaging. Secondly, suppliers of enabling technologies, such as printed and flexible electronics, are helping CPG companies more by offering more demonstrators and integration services.

This has resulted in more new concepts, demonstrators and activity from the CPG sector and suppliers to it. The drive is to sell more products by offering greater value than the competition, and CPG companies seek to obtain IP where possible to retain the lead. According to research by IDTechEx in their report on smart packaging, this creates a market of $75 million in 2013 – the amount of money spent on electrical and electronic smart packaging (excluding chemical smart packaging and RFID). These are still either mature roll outs or many trials of new products – most will begin life in small volumes in a «test» country or location, before brands roll out in volume.

Therein lies another issue – if the marketing departments of CPG companies – the part with the money – like a concept, they expect high volume manufacturing capability – which may or may not be ready depending on the device offered. To afford the

The market for food packaging containing nanomaterials has been predicted to reach $20bn USD by 2020. Currently, clay particles at the nanoscale are the most common application in flexible packaging, and that constitutes 70% of current nano applications. However, bio-replacement of synthetic polymers and its influence on lightweighting and enhancing barrier with packaging films is growing very rapidly.

FIRST INTEGRATED PRINTED ELECTRONIC SYSTEM WITH REWRITABLE MEMORY.

Thin Film Electronics ASA («Thinfilm») announced the first proof-of-concept prototype of an integrated printed electronic tag based on rewritable memory. The printed electronic label, consisting of printed memory, sensor and logic, detects that critical temperature thresholds have

been exceeded and records data digitally for later retrieval and display. Such labels can deliver item-level tracking of quality data for goods such as pharmaceuticals and perishable foods. The Thinfilm integrated system shows how low-cost, disposable printed electronic technology will provide information about product history based on data stored in Thinfilm Memory™. Three different printed devices – memory, logic, and temperature sensor – were shown to work together sensing a temperature threshold and writing to memory. The gathered data triggered a display through external circuitry to illustrate the tags’ expected commercial functionality. Integrating memory, logic, sensors and displays using printed circuitry is critical for the delivery of cost-effective, mass-produced printed electronic devices.

PARC led development of the organic logic circuitry within design rules and functional specifications provided by Thinfilm.

place from March 12–14 in Paris, France, UV system manufacturer IST METZ presented a wide range of products for curing adhesives using UV technology. The company offers a wide range of UV systems for applications in the fields of electronics, optoelectronics and medical technology, as well as for bonding glass, plastics and metal. The company’s adhesion and encapsulation portfolio includes both conventional UV systems and LED units for curing cationic, radical and dual-cure adhesives. From spot bonding to large-area adhesion, these systems can be used to implement a variety of applications. The wavelength and intensity of the UV light used in the systems is designed to suit the specialist demands of adhesives. What is more, the UV technology has several key benefits compared to conventional procedures: it hardens adhesives in a matter of seconds, allowing processing of the material to continue immediately, and also offers high levels of rigidity and resistance. This also applies to the manufacturing and bonding of composite materials.

tremely long pot life, meaning that they can be stored almost indefinitely before they are used. On the other hand, temperatures of around only 125 °C are sufficient for deblocking and initiating the crosslinking process. Such formulations can therefore be used to coat elastic polyamide fibers, without damaging them. Coatings based on the Impranil® line of polyure-thane dispersions and the new polyisocyanate dispersion adhere extremely well to textile fabrics. They improve the fabric’s scratch resistance and make it very resistant to abrasion.

Such coatings are also extremely resistant to dry cleaning and washing. Because of the long pot life, formulations based on Imprafix® 2794 XP can be used flexibly with respect to time and as needed in the production of textiles and synthetic leather.

necard presented several new developments of high performance solutions for the converting industries. The main focus is put on these developments made to optimize thin-layer coating, as silicone coating on release paper and film. Hannecard demonstrated a range of new generation polyurethane coverings. Next to the general solution Hannelac, the company presented Hannelac + for improved surface energy, leading to savings in the silicone consumption and Hannelac-AS, the non-black antistatic version for (silicone) coatings based on inflammable solvents like toluene. As a response to constant thickness reduction of plastic and aluminium substrates, Hannecard has developed SoftSpread-XR, a new concept for spreader rolls. This new covering enables the removal of wrinkles from very thin film and foils without marking.

Hannecard also displayed proven covering solutions such as Flexolys-Foam, ClearCoat-AS and HanneResist-DL, the new polyurethane covering for Spengler Florentil, already shown at drupa 2012.

The Azoteq IQS550 Capacitive Touch Screen Controller is the first device capable of interfacing with PEDOT sensors, marking a change in the way touch screen displays for handsets and tablet devices are manufactured. The transparent projected capacitive sensor used with the IQS550 is constructed with Kodak HCF-225 Film/ESTAR™ Base and features Clevios™ PEDOT:PSS conductive layers on each side of the film – to save on both thickness and cost. Lab Director gave a presentation titled «Aerosol Jet Printing of Conductive Epoxy for 3D Packaging» in the Advanced Materials track at the Pan Pacific Microelectronics Symposium in Hawaii in January 2013. Dr. Renn discussed how traditional dispensing technologies are typically limited to feature sizes above 100 microns and have limited 3D capability due to near or direct-surface contact with the substrate. Conductive adhesives for these systems typically contain large metallic flakes which lead to inconsistent conductivity in small features such as dots. The presentation explained how a new, nanoparticle conductive adhesive when dispensed with an Aerosol Jet Printer, demonstrated non-contact printing over 3D surfaces and into recesses such as through silicon vias (TSV). The

conductive adhesive, manufactured by Resin Designs, is a high-solids, nanoparticle system with resistivity as low at 5 μW -cm at 150 °C cure temperatures.

The adhesive has high thermal conductivity, adhesion, and elasticity, which are desirable for fabricating heterogeneous connections, such as between IC chips and circuit boards. The material can be Aerosol Jet dispensed with dot sizes down to 25 μm, which enables high-density die attach. Similarly, TSV filling has been demonstrated with via diameters down to 50 m and depths of 300 μm.

The high-solids formulation reduces the material shrinkage during curing resulting in a dense conductive plug.

has launched two new product grades with a lower molecular weight, to extend its existing portfolio of XIRAN® styrene maleic anhydride co-polymers. Developed specifically to meet customer needs, the two new grades, XIRAN SZ25010 and

XIRAN SZ40005 each have a significantly lower molecular weight compared to existing XIRAN grades. New product XIRAN SZ25010 has an Mw of 10,000 and XIRAN SZ40005 has an Mw as low as 5,000. In addition, the former grade (XIRAN SZ25010) has a 25% maleic anhydride content and the latter (XIRAN SZ40005) has an even higher maleic anhydride content of 42% for added functionality. This brings a number of key benefits for formulators, including easy processability of adhesives; faster and more stable processing of composites; better and more durable colours in coating and paints; and better printing properties in paper, with a higher quality endresult in the print. Current and new applications which will benefit from these two new XIRAN grades include, amongst others, filler, tackifier and pigment dispersions, formaldehyde free binders, superplasticizers for concrete, adhesion promoters, crosslinkers, and matting agents. The two new low molecular weight grades are particularly suited for applications such as adhesive labels, composities, coatings and paints and paper.

TreoPore is a three-dimensional, nanostructured, open-porous separator film made from polypropylene, with particularly high chemical and mechanical stability and exceptionally high gas permeability. This combination enables previously unattainable characteristics in both lithiumion batteries and supercaps. The result of several years of development work, the new microporous film is now ready for market launch, and Treofan has begun mass-producing it at the company’s main plant in Neunkirchen, Germany. Close to 10 million Euros were invested in the production plant. A lithium-ion battery generates electricity through the movement of lithium ions in a liquid electrolyte back and forth between the positive and negative electrodes, which are separated

All you ever wanted to know about pressure sensitive adhesives

«Taking into account the recent trends, as well as giving wings to the necessary innovations on the global adhesives market, we have specifically put the focus of this year’s symposium on ‹everything around Pressure Sensitive Adhesives›. With this year’s program consisting of 29 technical lectures about development trends in application technologies and new developments in the areas of new raw materials as well as formulations, I think we have done a pretty good job; which is also reflected in the high attendance of about 280 delegates from 16 countries,» said Stephan Hinterwaldner, one of the organizers of the Munich Adhesives and Finishing Symposium (MKVS) which took place from October 22–24, last year. An expert from the industry chaired each session, which was followed by time for Q&A. A tabletop presentation by Dr. Hönle AG, Rocholl GmbH, Keyser & Mackay, Arizona Chemical, AFS Entwicklungsund Vertriebs GmbH, Krahn Chemie GmbH, Weber & Schaer GmbH & Co.KG, CNP Polymer GmbH and Ter Hell & Co. GmbH provided further food for thought during the various breaks.

These also provided an excellent opportunity for networking, as Tanja Loits, Account Product Manager from TER HELL & Co. GmbH remarked: «We have taken part at the event for the past 7 years. It provides a good platform to meet customers and providers but also to meet new contacts.»

The first two papers kick-started the audience into a day full of news on innovations: Taking their cue from nature, the team around Dr. Aránzazu del Campo from the Max-Planck-Institut für Polymerforschung (Institute for Polymer Research), in Mainz, Germany, investigated «biological adhesives» that allow organisms and animals to attach to surfaces, either temporally or permanently. Microscopic bacteria, fungi, larger marine algae and invertebrates, insects, frogs and even terrestrial vertebrates (i.e. geckos) use highly specialized adhesive organs and secretions for this purpose. The performance of these adhesives is remarkable, and their diversity suggests the potential for developing adhesion concepts and artificial adhesive materials that are markedly different from those currently available, as was impressively shown by Dr. Aránzazu.

Dr. Hubertus von Voithenberg from The ChemQuest Group in Hamburg, Germany addressed sustainability, another worldwide concern. Seeing that pressure sensitive tapes are playing a more and more important role in supporting sustainable solutions in many different industries, he enlightened the audience on sustainable criteria relevant for the tape industry such as raw material selection, sustainable development as well as manCopyright Coating International 2013

ufacturing aspects. Examples of applications in various markets like construction, automotive, electronics, as well as energy related segments powerfully demonstrated the potential of intelligently designed products.

Christine Fuchs, from Nordson Engineering in Lüneburg, Germany, chaired the first session discussing different approaches for the choice of coating line, the choice of application method, a novel drying technique and flow behavior of adhesives in die cutting. «That the number of participants at MKVS has remained at a constant high level over the past years is a sign for both the quality of the papers given and the networking opportunities provided. Traditionally, systems and process engineering take center stage on the first day of the event. Accordingly, the paper on ‹Bio-inspired reversible adhesives› given by Mrs. del Campo was especially interesting for me, as it allowed me to appreciate a whole new side to pressure sensitive adhesion. I should also like to point out the paper on ‹Flow behavior of PSA during the die cutting process› given by Prof. Dr. Burth, who managed to captivate the audience in spite of it being the end of a long day,» was her summary of the first day.

Dr. Evert Smit from Arizona Chemical in Almere, The Netherlands, chaired the presentations on the first half of the second day. He opened the session with the following bombshell – True to the motto: «stay critical!» he claimed that «wetting is the red herring of adhesion science», referring to a paper given by Dr. Chuck Paul of National Starch /Henkel at the PSTC seminar and later also presented by Dr. Smit himself at the MKVS, both in 2007. Through a simple experiment that «can be tried at home,» Dr. Smit showed that actual bonding of LSE substrates, such as PE, with a high polar medium, as is water for instance, is not 3|2013

limited by wetting, but merely by the strength (or visco-elastic) behavior of the adhesive. The experiment shows that water easily wets PE in a bonding situation, i.e. when 2 PE plates are brought into contact. This tells us that the focus in adhesive development should be on study of, and subsequent improvement of, the rheological – flow and elastic/cohesive – and the bulk internal properties of the adhesive. And it defies the idea that for bonding of LSE substrates one needs low-surface-energy or apolar adhesives. On the contrary!

«The Tuesday morning session saw interesting presentations ranging from coating via bonding improvement by an impressive and innovative cleaning of surfaces with high-power laser treatment through to renewable and sustainable developments and ending with high-level acrylic adhesives developments.»

Dr. Smit explained and continued, «The gist of the works presented is that by careful study of how adhesives are made (or can be made!), applied and used throughout their life cycle, vast improvements to more efficient constructions are made: constructions that are simpler to make, better for the environment, stronger and lighter, faster, and certainly more cost-effective.

Hence, they are more sustainable.»

How decisive the chemistry in generating adhesives is, was shown in various examples in the Tuesday afternoon session, chaired by Lutz Jacob from RJ Consulting in Altstätten, Germany and in the Wednesday morning session, chaired by Chrétien Donker from Eastman Chemical in Middelburg, The Netherlands. Wrapping up, Dr. Ulli Nägele from Herma in Filderstadt, Germany, set up the theory that the future of pressure sensitive adhesives is multilayer. He was, of course, referring to the benefits of the multilayer-slide-die-coating process.

Going from the advantages to the rheological characteristics of the adhesive layers, which have an effect on the adhesion as well as the processing properties, he showed that the multilayer-coating technology facilitates not only new adhesion characteristics for the increasing requirements of end users, but also offers new approaches in terms of migration of label adhesives, which are in direct contact with foodstuffs. Not to mention the benefits for die cutting and subsequent processing such as decreased adhesive bleeding and reduced staining of the equipment.

The topic for the next MVKS, scheduled for October 28-30, 2013, is «Hotmelts: raw materials, processing and application».

Proposals for papers can be submitted to the organizers, Dr. Michael Gerstenberger and Stephan Hinterwaldner.

The following are some examples of the papers given.

SYSTEMS AND PROCESS ENGINEERING THE COATER. The influence chemical parameters such as recipe,

particle size and distribution, viscosity and solid content have on the choice of the right coating method and the requested coating layer thickness and accuracy were shown in a case study presented by Andrea Glawe from Kroenert, Hamburg, Germany, and Dr. Christoph Kiener from BASF in Ludwigshafen, Germany. They walked the audience through the entire process of coming up with a new product for the mass market: begin30

ning with the concept for an environmentally friendly adhesive solution from BASF, which was then tested on the KROENERT lab coater for packaging solutions, LabCo, through to the final tweaks necessary to upscale the system to mass production.

The laboratory coating line used provides the same quality level for coating and curing processes on a lab scale as the large coating lines later required for mass production. The presentation also focused on the benefits of water-based adhesive products and the required technology to work with them.

The Polytype approach to developing production procedures for new products was illustrated by Natacha Valera from Polytype Converting, Fribourg, Switzerland. It had developed the FlexCo especially for high coating accuracy at low volumes, narrow widths (50–600 mm), low speeds (0.1–100 m/min) and low web-tensions (minimum 5 N/m) as are required for organic photovoltaic cells, optical lenses, optical security products, LiIon batteries, fuel cells and label stock food or stationary.

APPLYING COATING. No matter that they are based on the same

physical principles and underlie similar requirements, the difference in design, handling, cleaning and processing make each of the three chambered pressurized doctor gravure systems compared unique. So, Peter Rose Ralph from Pagendarm and Jörg Pahle-Kraas from SAM SUNGAN PAGENDARM, Hamburg, Germany, agree that whether its the KROENERT MPG, The Pagendarm BTT AGS 2500 «S» or their own PGS 300/1/6, in the end the customer must decide on the application system best adaptable to his specific requirements.

Generally speaking, slot dies are a coating tool that can be applied for a wide range of mass flows and viscosities as well as contact angles to the substrates and in a wide range of modes (extrusion, curtain, bead or short curtain). In order to obtain the desired equal coating distribution across the web width, usually slot dies with an adjustment mechanism are employed, to tune the slot die as required for each coating. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c.

Franz Durst and Martin Gillert from FMP Technology, Erlangen, Germany, showed that given the right material make-up, a universal slot die needing no adjusting could be used to apply different hot melt and pressure sensitive adhesives in a layer range of 1–1000 μm. Following rheological measurements of the hot melt (viscosity, surface tension and contact angle) a corresponding coating window is calculated and the same computer program also shows which changes need to be made to the hot melt properties to optimally suit a particular slot coating mode.

Seeing that the European Union has published a «Roadmap for moving to a low carbon economy in 2050», the eco-efficiency of coating application methods, too, must be put to the test. Jörg Weidauer from Nordson in Erkrath, Germany researched the eco-efficiency of TrueCoat™, the Nordson slot nozzle application technology, when used to apply UV-curing hot melts. Ecoefficiency is defined as the ratio of a product’s economic value to the environmental impact its production has per unit. His findings are based on information gathered primarily from publications, personal talks, and open interviews. Convincing product quality can be reached at high production speed and the machine does not require much space. This makes it economically efficient. Founded on its lifecycle inventory and assessment, the ecological impact of the TrueCoat™ was determined.

Mr. Weidauer came to the conclusion that the technology shows potential for reducing CO2 emissions.

Time is money and accordingly the goal is to increase application speed. Urs Fankhauser from Geistlich Ligamenta in Schlieren, Switzerland, showed that it is not enough to simply be faster: Where high speed cycling applicators are used for accurate dot or line application of waterborne adhesives, the fast cycle rate up to 500 per second causes fast dirt formation inside the nozzle for commonly used waterborne adhesives. As a result, the adhesive is applied irregularly or with tailing. Even complete blocking of the nozzle can occur. This leads to time-consuming and expensive additional maintenance work. A new generation of adhesives is able to resist the high shear forces arising in applicators and assure a proper adhesive application even during long production periods. These types of adhesives are, of course, plasticizer free and suitable for food packaging. The Miracol 6800series Plus is an example for such an adhesive.

Sustainability is currently one of the main buzzwords in politics and economics. Although for this reason – whether justifiable or not – the use of solvent-based adhesives and lacquers is forecast to decline, it remains, at least up to the present time, the material of choice for many technical applications. Reason enough for Dirk Robeling from Olbrich in Bocholt, Germany, to also include the design and operational parameters that determine the choice of a coating line where organic solvents are included in the recipes in his evaluation of the overall sustainability. Many given conditions dictated by the product portfolio, the available space, the rest of the plant or the law, to mention only a few, are behind the choice of components that make up a coating line.

According to Mr. Robeling, in an optimal coating line sustainability and operating efficiency complement each other, rather than exclude each other.

DRYING. Dr. Gene Plavnik from HTI Heat Technologies Inc. in

Atlanta, GA, USA, introduced an advanced convective drying technology for inks, adhesives, water and other solvents on nonporous materials, films, foils, and papers where high temperatures are not effective: Spectra Ultra HE™ technology. Hereby heat from an advanced convective or hot-air based system is combined with oscillating ultrasonic sounds organized into one

powerful stream, which is directed onto the material, and there penetrates the laminar boundary layer above high-speed webs making it more pliable and as a result, drying is more efficient at a lower temperature as was shown in the case studies presented with a focus on drying applications in narrow to wide web configurations.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE RIGHT CHEMISTRY. When devising adhesive

formulations it is essential to know the chemistry of resins and polymers used, as this makes it easier to select the right resins for the selected polymer. However it still takes quite some time to formulate adhesive formulations. This was shown using HMPSA formulations as an example to demonstrate that by using DMA as a tool to develop adhesive formulations a lot of time and effort can be saved1. Another approach to finding the resin for optimal PSA properties is to study the flow characteristics of materials. Roelof Luth and Dr. Evert Smit from Arizona Chemical in Almere, The Netherlands, showed how they used rheology as a central tool for quick, accurate, and straightforward identification of tackifier and adhesive properties. The resin usually stands for 30–50% of the formulation and is the material that provides the strength and cohesive properties to the HMA. The ideal resin should provide a controllable morphology in terms of kinetics (that is, it would set quickly or slowly), have high strength, controllable and relatively low viscosity, and be compatible with a wide variety of substrates, tackifier, oils and waxes. It should soften at a relatively low temperature for application but still maintain its physical properties up to its softening point, have good chemical and environmental resistance, and good low temperature properties. Finally, it should be easily stabilized to provide good «pot life». PB-1 based polymer resins provide characteristics that are important to the formulator in designing an optimized composition in terms of performance and cost for the preparation of hot melt adhesive (HMA)2.

Rubber-based pressure sensitive adhesives for high temperature applications are difficult to formulate, as they are thermoplastic, i.e. they start to melt at high temperatures and therefore

lose their shear strength. However, by careful selection and combination of raw materials together with a sophisticated production process, it is possible to manufacture products with good processing viscosities, high shear strength and strong adhesion properties. Shear temperatures (SAFT) over 100 °C can be obtained3.

There is a new HMPSA class based on the combination of conventional acrylic acid esters with monomers containing oxirane groups available. However, the key feature is the use of cationic photo-initiators based on 2-methylbenzothiazoles, which have not yet been synthesized. This led to a new generation of UVcross-linked pressure-sensitive adhesives being characterized by high tack and peel resistance along with excellent shear strength, especially at higher temperatures4.

In the last years the use of radiation curable adhesive systems has increased continuously. These 100% systems are characterized through convenient handling in the coating process. Water or solvent based adhesives need complex drying processes, which makes high monetary investment in coating and drying equipment necessary. Radiation curable adhesive systems can be cured with common UV lamps, which are standard equipment in the printing industry. Besides the known and widelyused adhesive systems cured under UV-C radiation, a lot of research is done to develop adhesives which allow curing at longer wavelengths or UV-LED curing5.

It has been shown that in food which was stored in paper packages made of recycled paper, significant amounts of mineral oil can be found. This has migrated to the food from printing inks used in the newspapers recycled to make the paper. However, the mineral oil also comes from antifoams for paper and packaging. This can be avoided when alternative mineral oil free antifoams based on oils such as vegetable oil, polyether and organomodified siloxanes are used. Case studies point out that these antifoams also provide technical advantages when used in adhesive formulations. Very often a significant lower dosage of the antifoam is necessary and most of the mineral oil free antifoams provide improved storage stability and therefore a reduced loss or even no loss of antifoaming performance in the adhesive occurs6.

Despite the recent improvements made in water-borne acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives, these materials are still suffering from a limited adhesion to LSE substrates, poor adhesion/cohesion balance and a lack of resistance against water. Dr. Francois Simal, O. Kameneva, N. Havaux, and D. Soria from Momentive Specialty Chemicals in Ottignies Belgium focused on acrylic lattices modified by soft and highly hydrophobic vinyl ester monomers. Due to their unique nature, these vinyl esters allow the significant improvement of the adhesion/cohesion balance and the water resistance of the PSA. A new class of PSA materials was introduced. Thanks to the very soft nature of some hydrophobic vinyl esters, straight vinyl ester PSA’s with out-

standing adhesion to polyolefins and very high cohesive strength were designed. Finally, a new class of products based predominantly on a combination of vinyl monomers was developed. It has been demonstrated that these materials behave well as PSA’s, showing a good cohesion level together with an excellent adhesion to low surface energy substrate plastics such as HDPE and Teflon. Further evaluations of these materials have revealed an interesting fit for technical tape applications.

A major share of pressure sensitive adhesives – tapes, labels and films – is being produced with acrylic dispersions. However, there are high performance applications amongst others in the field of adhesive tapes, where dispersions do not dominate, despite their economic and ecological advantages. Consequently, the development of dispersions for these applications within the area of adhesive tapes is a challenging but rewarding task.

By controlling the unavoidable hydrophilic components of dispersion products, on the one hand, and combining optimized gel content and molecular weight with temporary crosslinking points, on the other, a dispersion can be developed that combines conflicting properties: Both physical characterizations and application tests showed that high adhesion values, internal strength, heat resistance, colloidal stability, rapid drying and high water resistance can be achieved in a single product7.

Using the example of car wrapping, the application of acrylic PSA’s to control adhesion of a repositionable adhesive was shown very vividly. The complex shape of a car makes it difficult to position large areas of a film (usually PVC) directly without flaws. The adhesive used in this case should be removable for a period of time so that the film can be readjusted where necessary. Once it is in place, the film should build up bond strength to a high level to provide the necessary properties for outdoor requirements8.

Self-adhesive structural tapes have become a valuable fastening alternative in the assembly of automotive components. They are easier to use than mechanical fasteners or liquid adhesives and can be made of non-polluting and non-toxic raw materials and thus should be considered as a substitute for conventional reactive adhesive systems, which must meet increasingly stringent governmental regulations. Today’s standards for the testing of pressure-sensitive adhesives and products are still mainly focused on non-structural applications and often fail to provide the data and safety factors of materials required to design and engineer pressure sensitive joints with a sufficient level of confidence concerning long-term performance and design resistance. Of the various available experimental approaches to obtain engineering data about the mechanical long-term performance of pressure-sensitive adhesives, the relaxation technique fulfills the basic requirements concerning long-term predictability and experimental feasibility. A standardization of recommended substrates, initial strain values and other preferred test conditions could promote the broad acceptance and utilization of this test procedure in design engineering with pressure-sensitive adhesives9.

NEW AGREEMENT SIGNED. Antonio Cer-

ciello, CEO of Nordmeccanica, announced a strategic agreement with Galileo Vacuum Systems, a company operating in the pharmaceutical products and flexible packaging sectors. This involves an exclusive license to use the well-known Florence-based company’s technology, brands and patents. Galileo, originally founded in 1864 as a producer of scientific optics, developed its vacuum products division in 1930. This division became completely independent over the years, concentrating on metallised film technologies. Nordmeccanica will therefore be able to complete its product line by adding the new line of metallisers to its core business, composed of flexible film laminating and coating machinery. The production and sales synergies which will be achieved will allow the Piacenza company to obtain new market share.

The industry is showing a propensity to invest. The AMA members made well over nine percent more investments in fiscal year 2012 than in the previous year with its considerable investments closing with an increase of 16 percent. The sensor and measuring industry is expected to have a further increase in investments of well over two percent. The stumbling block of 2012 turned out to be the exports to European countries. Germany’s European export quota dropped by five percentage points to 22 percent.

The non-European export quota rose by four percentage points and was able to nearly compensate the losses in exports to other European countries.

For the full year 2012, consolidated sales for Bobst Group achieved nearly the same level as in 2011 and came to CHF 1.26 billion. Sales in the second half of 2012 reached CHF 731 million compared with CHF 533 million for the first half of 2012. The geographical breakdown shows that the Group has accelerated its growth in the Asia & Oceania region now representing 25.2% of total sales (2011: 20.9%). Europe suffered mainly due to the sovereign debt crisis and contributed 45.1% (2011: 47.3%) to total sales whereas the Americas decreased to 26.7% of total sales (2011: 28.3%). 2013 started with an improved backlog of orders compared to the beginning of 2012 and the Group strategy continues to be implemented successfully. As already announced on December 5, 2012, the consolidated net profit will be close to previous year. Further details will be given on March 20, 2013.
