Long live childhood

OUR MISSION
To provide child-centered prevention, advocacy, and team intervention in investigation, assessment, and treatment of child sexual abuse inclusive of all children and families.
LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR Who We Are
Dear friends,
We are so proud to provide our annual report for your review! 2024 was a year of momentum building and considerable growth for the Children’s Advocacy Center, and we are delighted to share our updates with you. Through it all, we remained steadfast in our commitment to providing inclusive child-centered prevention, advocacy, and team intervention in the investigation, assessment, and treatment of child sexual abuse.
OUR VISION
A safe, inclusive community free of abuse.
OUR CORE VALUES
+ Compassion
+ Collaboration
+ Empathy
+ Excellence
+ Integrity
+ Child-centered
+ Inclusivity
We are always looking for new ways to share about our work and help people to understand the heart of our organization. This year, the theme that emerged was Long Live Childhood! We’ve learned that reconnecting kids to a positive childhood experience is how many of our clients view our work, and we are determined to restore as much childhood as possible to the kids we serve.
Every child deserves a chance to have a healthy, happy childhood that doesn’t lead to an adulthood consumed by recovery. Through our abuse prevention and intervention programs, we are fighting for childhood. We are fighting for healing, justice, and safety on behalf of those we serve.
In order to carry out our mission, we look to our values to guide us. Our values encompass the spirit of our staff and team as they work relentlessly to care for those impacted by child sexual abuse. In the following pages, you will learn more about how we lived out each of our values in 2024. We have a vision for a safe, inclusive community that is free of abuse. Until that is realized, we will be here, advocating for the wellbeing and safety of those we serve and boldly declaring LONG LIVE CHILDHOOD!

LIVING OUT OUR VALUES Compassion
The feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.
Providing a compassionate response to our clients in their moments of crisis is imperative to healing. This year, in an effort to enhance our compassionate response, we joined CarePortal. CarePortal is an online platform that matches client needs with churches and community members that have the capacity to meet the needs.
The reality is that child sexual abuse often destabilizes the financial wellbeing of a family. While our family advocates turn to community resources first to support clients, some needs are more complicated to fulfill. Some of the needs met through CarePortal for our clients this past year include car repairs and insurance, utility bill payment, temporary housing, and groceries.
We also have Cora’s Care Closet on site, which provides personal care products, home cleaning supplies, household items, diapers, winter coats and boots, school supplies, and more. All of these products are given to clients completely free of charge.
Collaboration
A partnership committed to the possibility of producing an outcome greater than what would be achieved if individually pursued.
Our multidisciplinary team allows for the numerous professionals involved in child abuse cases to collaborate for the benefit of the family. These professionals include forensic interviewers, advocates, therapists, law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys, pediatricians, nurses, and Children’s Protective Services (CPS) workers.
Every other Wednesday morning, the entire team gathers to review new cases and follow up on existing cases. We collectively identify gaps in care and available resources, assess the mental and emotional wellbeing of the child and family, brainstorm sustainable solutions for safety, and help inform the investigation. We are so much more effective when our team collaborates to facilitate justice, safety, and healing for our clients.

Multidisciplinary Meeting

Integrity
The quality of being honest and showing a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical priniciples and values.
Our Center demonstrates integrity through meeting and exceeding national standards. We are accredited by the National Children’s Alliance (NCA), which oversees a network of 960+ CACs throughout the country. The goal of the NCA’s accreditation is to ensure that all children receive consistent and evidence-based care when recovering from abuse.
To be an accredited CAC through the NCA, we must meet 10 individual standards that are developed from the work of more than 130 child abuse intervention professionals and experts utilizing the latest research to inform those standards.
A portion of our funding comes from state and federal grants. These grants hold us accountable for spending the funds toward services that are culturally honoring, comprehensive, victim-focused, centered on client autonomy, trauma-informed, inclusive, accessible, and that prioritize healing for victims. This year, we passed the extensive Michigan Division of Victim Services audit, which confirmed that we are stewarding these funds the way they were intended. (FY 2025 Grant Guidelines)
Empathy
Understanding, being sensitive to, and experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another person.
We average over 200 counseling sessions every month. Our therapists meet our clients in some of their darkest moments and provide a space for witnessing, processing, and healing. They ensure each counseling client feels uniquely seen, known, valued, and understood. To be effective, our therapists inevitably have to put themselves aside and enter into the client’s world even when it causes them to experience vicarious trauma.
In order to empower our staff to be relentlessly and consistently empathetic, we are intentional about caring for them through regular supervision, generous benefits, a designated respite room, retreats and team-building activities throughout the year, development and implementation of burnout prevention plans, healthy scheduling practices, and training opportunities.

Excellence
The result of caring about what we do and putting forth our very best effort, an outward expression of inner integrity, passion, and a strong commitment to making a difference.
Our team of Master of Social Work (MSW) level social workers utilizes evidence-based and evidence-informed therapy methods to care for kids and families after abuse. We invest in training for our staff to cultivate the most knowledgeable and skilled team of clinicians possible. We are experts in the treatment of child sexual abuse and trauma.
This year, we added a method called Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) to our toolbox. CFTSI is short-term (5-8 sessions), evidence-based, early intervention for children 7 to 18 years old that reduces traumatic stress reactions after abuse by increasing communication and family support, identifying prominent traumatic stress reactions, and pairing those reactions with coping skills to reduce the potential onset of PTSD.

Child-Centered
Giving priority to the interests and needs of each individual child.
In 2024, we initiated and completed capital projects to enhance the child-centeredness of our facility. We completely renovated our medical suite to be more warm and soothing for kids receiving exams. Some of the specific improvements included adding a heated tile over the exam table to make kids more comfortable, concealing as much of the medical equipment as possible, and adding a beautiful water mural for kids to focus on during their exam.
We also updated our lobby and added new artwork from local artists in an effort to connect with a wide range of kids and teens who utilize our services. Our teen forensic interview room was enhanced to be more appealing to older kids. As we look ahead, we continue to think about additional updates to continue making our space as child-centered as possible.

BILINGUAL STAFF MEMBERS

Garcia Prevention Program Specialist

Dalila Flores Winkler Community Education Specialist
Creating a culture where all people feel valued and respected, regardless of their differences or background.
We added 3 bilingual bicultural positions in 2024 to improve our outreach to our Spanish-speaking community members. Given the demographic of our community, and in an effort to provide culturally informed care, it is critical that we provide prevention and intervention services in Spanish. We added a bilingual family advocate to come alongside families during the forensic interview process and beyond.
We also added 2 Spanish-speaking staff members to our prevention team to ensure that our child abuse prevention education and body safety training is more accessible to kids whose first language is Spanish. We are also extending our community education efforts to Spanish-speaking adults as we work to develop a curriculum that is relevant and culturally responsive to hispanic families. We are committed to providing equitable service in Spanish and will continue to prioritize inclusivity moving forward.

WHO MAKES IT POSSIBLE

In order to provide hope and healing to those impacted by child sexual abuse in our community, it requires all of us to work together and to give of our unique talents and resources. Through the joint efforts of our board members, staff, multi-disciplinary team, volunteers, corporate partners, and individual donors, we are able to reclaim childhood for those we serve and create a healthier, safer community for our kids. The restoration of childhood through our critical services is only possible through the involvement and investment of the following people:
We are grateful to our generous corporate and individual donors who come alongside us in fulfilling our mission! You can view our donor list in the expanded version of the 2024 Annual Report on our website.

Looking Ahead

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

We know that with education, most child sexual abuse can be prevented or disrupted. In April 2025, we are launching a comprehensive campaign for Child Abuse Prevention Month, embracing the theme Growing Bold and Bright Futures. Our goal is to strategically and broadly raise awareness in our community about the issue of child sexual abuse and how we can work together to prevent it! This campaign will be taking the place of our spring luncheon. Events include a lunch and learn series, family activities, a Pinwheel Party on April 24 at Warehouse 6 with live music, and more!
