WHO WE ARE

LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

What a YEAR! To say a lot happened in 2023 is an understatement. We celebrated our 25-year anniversary. We experienced significant changes and transition while navigating unprecedented challenges.

Through it all, however, we remained secure in our mission: to provide child centered prevention, advocacy, and team intervention in investigation, assessment, and treatment of child sexual abuse inclusive of all children and families. I am proud to confidently say that as we close the chapter on 2023, the Ed & Nancy Hanenburg Children’s Advocacy Center is thriving, and we continue to excel at fulfilling our important mission!

I am incredibly proud to present the 2023 annual report. The content development was a collaborative effort between staff, clients, community partners, and multi-disciplinary team members. We are all grateful and excited for the opportunity to share more about our work with you.

Our report’s theme is Back to Basics. I want to reorient our supporters to what we do, how we do it, and who makes it possible. A lot has changed over 25 years of operation, however we remain true to our purpose.

We continue to provide critical abuse prevention and intervention to our community free of charge. We remain the experts in the field of child sexual abuse. We relentlessly facilitate hope and healing for those we serve, no matter what change or challenge we face as an organization.

Thank you for coming alongside us. It certainly would be easier to turn away from this heartbreaking reality confronting children and families in Ottawa County. It would be easier to pretend sexual abuse doesn’t exist in our community, however we know that 1 in 10 children in our county will be sexually abused before they turn 18.1

As a therapist at the CAC for several years, one of the ways I’ve been able to sustain the heaviness of the work is to remind myself that whether I’m a part of the healing or not, child sexual abuse will continue to happen. Denying this reality doesn’t serve any of us. I want to express how much we appreciate your courage and vulnerability in championing the wellbeing of those we serve!

Truly we could not do this without you. We are grateful for the steadfast support of our community that makes our services possible. May you have confidence knowing your contributions are making a significant impact on those affected by child sexual abuse in Ottawa County. I’m excited to continue our partnership and together expand our impact in 2024!

With gratitude,

WHAT WE DO

For the past 25 years, we have been working relentlessly to fight for those impacted by child sexual abuse in our community. Ultimately, our goal is for the community to no longer need our services. Until then, we approach the critical issue of child sexual abuse in two ways: we provide prevention education throughout the community and we provide intervention when abuse is reported.

Through prevention, we empower children with the information that they have the right to tell and be believed when talking about unsafe touches. We also know that with adult education, most abuse can be prevented or interrupted. When abuse does occur, we facilitate intervention through compassionately and expertly coordinating the investigation, assessment, and treatment. We build a team of professionals around children and families and we are with our clients every step of the way as they navigate life post-disclosure.

FORENSIC INTERVIEWS

Forensic interviews are provided to children, teenagers, and vulnerable adults who may have been victims of sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, or witnesses to a violent crime.

Conducted by trained professionals, these interviews aim to gather accurate information in a developmentally appropriate, safe, and comforting manner.

311

FORENSIC INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Ottawa County has been and continues to be an invaluable partner and resource to child survivors of crime and their families. Together with the multi-disciplinary team, the staff, services, and resources from the Ottawa CAC are instrumental to the investigative process and in the pursuit of justice for members in our community.”

“I feel so much better after talking, like a huge weight has been lifted off my chest.”
—CAC Client

MEDICAL EXAMS

We offer a medical evaluation to any child who has allegations or concerns of abuse. These evaluations are designed to be child-friendly and offered on site at zero cost to the family. Dr. Simms and Dr. Schmidt from Corewell Health oversee these evaluations. They are specially trained pediatricians who are experts in child abuse.

The main purpose of the medical exam is to reassure the child and family that their body is okay. Medical evaluations can assist in the collection of evidence and document trauma if present. The exam is also used to assess for and treat sexually transmitted infections, injuries, and pregnancy.

65 Having this exam was very positive and impactful to my healing journey.”

The CAC does a great job with our medical evaluations. I am always confident that our patients will leave here feeling empowered and in good spirits because of the team and environment at the CAC.”

COURT ADVOCACY

One of the services that our advocates provide is court support. We work closely with the Prosecuting Attorney’s office to help families navigate every phase of the court process. We offer our families activities, arts and crafts, games, food, a friendly face, processing and emotional support during court preparation meetings and different court proceedings. Advocates also provide assistance with writing victim impact statements that can be read at the time of sentencing.

“Watching a child testify against their abuser is another level of inspiring, and it is an honor to be able to be there holding the hands of these families while they go through this. It brings me an incredible amount of fulfillment.”

77 CHILDREN PREPARED FOR & ACCOMPANIED TO COURT

“Having an advocate through the court process meant the difference between the feeling of standing alone, and standing in the feeling of being supported. Knowing we weren’t alone and had a team on our side, is something I’ll never forget, and will be forever grateful for.”

COURT ADVOCACY IMPACT STORY

THE GUARDIAN OF THE FOREST

In March of 2020, there was a child victim who was sexually abused numerous times by her father. The case had been pushed back for a variety of reasons. Having to navigate the delays in the case with the child was incredibly difficult. Not only did she still love her father and missed him, but she had to relive the abuse while testifying in court.

The wrap around counseling that this young child received from the Ed and Nancy Hanenburg Children’s Advocacy Center helped this child through so many difficult days and allowed me to focus on the task at hand, which was to hold the defendant accountable for his actions.

In preparation for trial, I had met with the victim to try and help her feel as comfortable as possible. After the meetings, her counselor would be there to greet her for whatever support was needed. In order to get to know a child victim, it is so important to listen to their likes and dislikes.

At this particular trial prep meeting, she had told me about how much she liked the movie The Lorax. She told me all about the Guardian of the Forest!

When it came time for trial, this brave young child walked right into the courtroom ready to tell her truth. She was confident, until she saw her father in that very courtroom. As much as we can prepare child victims for court, there is no replication for the actual day. She waved hello to her father with her little hand in front of the jury and smiled at him. My heart sunk.

When she finally got to the witness stand, feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders, she froze. The young child victim would not answer any of my questions, not even what her name was. She could feel the cold stare of her father beating down on her, after not seeing him for two years.

Minutes went by with no responses from the child. In a silent courtroom with 12 jurors looking at me, those minutes felt like hours.

With my heart pounding, I referred back to our last meeting hoping to get this brave child to speak. Enter the Guardian of the Forest! I asked her about the Lorax. She was able to break through from her fear and the pressure of the moment. Once she started talking, there was no stopping her! She told those jurors about the pain and hurt she endured at the hands of her father. Once she was done testifying, the Children’s Advocacy Center team was there to greet her.

The trial continued for the rest of the week with the jury hearing from others involved from the Children’s Advocacy Center. The forensic interviewer testified as well as the medical team that did an evaluation of the victim. Detectives from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office also testified about their role in the case and their investigations.

Q is the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office Canine Advocate. He brings comfort by sitting with child victims who are under the age of 16 years old when they are testifying in court. He also attends meetings with child victims alongside Jake. The amount of smiles Q can generate for families going through the difficult court process is truly amazing.

In the end, on March 13, 2020, the jury came back GUILTY on all counts. The defendant, her father, was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison.

The assistance that the victims and their families receive from the Children’s Advocacy Center once again, allows me to focus on ensuring justice for the children of Ottawa County with the help of our incredible team from law enforcement.

This is just one example of many of how grateful we are at the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office to have a resource like the Ed and Nancy Hanenburg Children’s AdvocacyCenter in our community.

COUNSELING

We are committed to providing a safe place for children to begin the healing process after they have experienced abuse. Our team of therapists provide trauma informed therapy to children of every age and the family as a whole. The clinical staff is specially trained in several evidence-based/informed treatment approaches such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Problematic Sexual Behavior - Phase Based Treatment (PSB-PBT).

We also offer multiple support groups to kids, teens, and parents throughout the year. This year we added the treatment approach Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI). CFTSI is a short-term, early intervention that reduces traumatic stress reactions by increasing communication and family support, which leads to lessening the potential onset of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

2,144 COUNSELING SERVICES PROVIDED

“After meeting with my therapist I realized how important it was to have a place to talk about the things that I have experienced. She let me know what I was going through and how I was coping were normal responses. She helped me figure out ways to show my feelings and cope with them. She believed and supported my experience and that was so important in my healing.”

COUNSELING

PROBLEMATIC SEXUAL BEHAVIOR SCREENINGS

Sexualized behaviors can be a normal part of child development, however there are situations when these become problematic and professional support is beneficial. Problematic Sexual Behavior (PSB) screenings explore what behaviors are occurring, identify their origin, and classify them as developmentally appropriate or problematic. Caregivers are empowered with information on how to support their child in reducing or eliminating the behaviors. If more intensive intervention is needed, the CAC also offers specialized counseling for children displaying problematic sexual behaviors.

“I had no idea this resource was in our community and I am so grateful! I was so concerned about the behaviors my child was displaying and had no idea what to do. I was able to share all my concerns and get answers to all my questions. I feel so much better now that I know how to handle these behaviors.”

PREVENTION

Child Abuse Prevention: Kids Have Rights (KHR) accomplishes its mission by partnering and working collaboratively with area elementary schools to present body safety lessons during the school day that are engaging, child-centered, and age-appropriate. The program’s goal is for children to learn that they have the right to feel safe from harm and the right to tell and be believed when talking about unsafe touches. Children also identify safe adults who they could go to for help and support. The KHR curriculum is based on the latest research and informed by the expertise of the program educators, CAC’s therapists, forensic interviewers, law enforcement, and others.

“We help kids understand who the “safe adults” are and when it’s important to talk to them. Many kids are scared they will get in trouble if they disclose abuse, or don’t even realize something they are experiencing is not safe. Our program gives them vocabulary that is very age appropriate and empowers them to stand up for themselves.”
— Julie Leeson, Prevention & School Outreach Specialist

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Children’s Advocacy Center is striving to make our services known and available to all in the community. We offer four different training options for adults in the community to learn how they can easily take simple steps to creating safer spaces for all children and families by recognizing signs of abuse, understanding how to respond appropriately if they have a concern, and how to prevent unsafe situations from occurring to begin with.

“Child sexual abuse

is something that most people do not

want to consider

is happening

in their community. But if we talk about it, we can prevent it. At the CAC, we want to equip not only children and families with the knowledge and skills to prevent child sexual abuse, but businesses, churches, and other organizations so that by working together we can create a community free from abuse. And if you or your child is a survivor, we want you to know we believe you and we can help. It’s never too late to report.”

YOUTH ADVOCACY TEAM

The Youth Advocacy Team (YAT) is comprised of high school students across Ottawa County, Michigan, who are passionate about the work we do at the CAC. The YAT’s purpose is to provide insight regarding impacts on the lives of Ottawa County youth, as well as how the Children’s Advocacy Center can better serve the community.

Youth develop leadership and teamwork skills while making a lasting impact on the Ottawa County community and on the lives of children affected by sexual/physical abuse. We believe that centering youth voice in decision-making, program planning, etc. is essential to the work of CACs and aligns with the diversity, inclusion, and equity work already embedded in our programming.

Students commit to one year on the team, including monthly meetings and a service project of their choosing.

CORA’S CARE CLOSET

Cora Visscher was the founder of the CAC. A champion for child welfare, she identified a need in the community for children to have a safe place to talk about abuse. As the CAC developed, Cora also recognized the reality that disclosing sexual abuse can devastate the stability of a family and many times creates a significant financial loss.

220

FAMILIES RECEIVED ASSISTANCE FROM CORA’S CARE CLOSET T

She advocated for children and their caregivers to have tangible support available at the center in an effort to support them in navigating life post-disclosure. Cora’s Care Closet provides immediate access to personal care products, cleaning supplies, household items, baby gear, school supplies, coats, boots, and more. The Closet is stocked through donations from our community. Cora passed away in September of 2023, however she will always be honored as an integral piece of the CAC’s foundation and legacy.

To honor Cora, we commissioned this piece from Joel Schoon-Tanis. It hangs outside of the Care Closet.

HOW WE DO IT

Every investment you make to support our mission is an investment in the children of Ottawa County and the future of our community. We are committed to thoughtfully stewarding your donations to prevent child sexual abuse and to intervene when it has happened.

MEDICAL SUITE RENOVATION

We are currently in the process of renovating our medical exam suite to be as child-friendly, warm, and inviting as possible. In careful consideration of the experience of the child and family, some of the proposed updates include softer overhead lighting, ambient heat directly over the exam table, adding caregiver seating, visually appealing and soothing artwork, and cabinetry specially designed to conceal the medical equipment.

We would be grateful for the opportunity to partner with you on implementing our vision and enhancing the medical exam experience for those we serve. We anticipate the entire project costing about $70,000 and we are working to raise money through a variety of community partners. We would welcome any amount of financial support you would be willing to offer with this one-time opportunity.

For more information, please contact Rachael at rdewitt@cac-ottawa.org

There
