DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, IISER BHOPAL The Department of Biological Sciences at IISER Bhopal has invited applications for the graduate program. Candidates with a first class M. Sc./ M. Tech./ B. Tech. degree from a recognized university or institute in any of the broad disciplines of biology and additionally having a valid JRF (CSIR-JRF or DBT-JRF Cat. I or ICMR-JRF Cat. A or DST-INSPIRE-JRF provisional certificate) are allowed to WALK-IN FOR THE INTERVIEW. DETAILS OF THE INTERVIEW Date and time: December 3rd, 2019, 9:00 AM onwards. Venue: L1, Lecture hall complex (LHC), IISER Bhopal Accommodation: Candidates requiring accommodation may please refer to the online guidelines. Candidates can also check for other details on the Results tab > Biological Sciences, available on the IISER Bhopal main page. This can be directly accessed also through the link: https://www.iiserb.ac.in/assets/ALLUPLOAD/Result/Admissions/2020/Bio_List_of_Shortlisted_Candidate_for_PhD.pdf In this regard, the Molecular Biophysics Laboratory of Department of Biological Sciences, headed by Dr. R. Mahalakshmi, Associate Professor, and working in the broad areas of MITOCHONDRIAL BIOCHEMISTRY and PROTEIN BIOENERGETICS has vacancies for graduate students for the following experimental research topics: 1. Study of human mitochondrial membrane protein folding and function towards development of aggregation inhibitors 2. Study of human mitochondrial import supercomplex structure, function and regulation in neurodegeneration and aging 3. Study of the molecular function and architecture of the human mitochondrial membrane protein translocase 4. Study of the molecular function and architecture of the human mitochondrial membrane protein assembly machinery 5. Study of molecular effectors of beta-barrel membrane protein biogenesis, misfolding, and aggregation 6. Study of elemental origins of the structure, function, and regulation of the human mitochondrial metabolite flux protein Candidates interested in discussing additional details on the ongoing research in Dr. R. Mahalakshmi’s laboratory can also send an e-mail to maha@iiserb.ac.in. Description of research in the Mahalakshmi laboratory: We are discovering the link between membrane protein folding, protein stability and function, and its connection to neurodegenerative diseases. Our focus system is the human mitochondrial outer membrane proteins. We combine modern ultrafast kinetics and equilibrium spectroscopic measurements with state-of-the-art electrophysiology measurements and cell survival assays to obtain a complete understanding of membrane protein folding, function, regulation, and the occurrence of neurodegeneration.
