CHAIR MESSAGE

Chair Message As we look forward to Christmas and the new Year, I am aware that many Probus Clubs are currently enjoying Christmas celebrations and sharing the spirit of the season. Chair of Probus: Michael Ransom Fishing

It is a time also to recall all the happy times we have been able to share with others in our Probus Clubs during the year. In my mind, Probus is about community and companionship. Particularly at Christmas, many of us come together with our extended families, catch up with the year’s events, see how our grandchildren have grown during the year, share gifts, and reminisce about Christmases in the past. But not all of us are able to be with family at this time. This is where Probus is so important for many people; it allows us to be part of a welcoming community and to have wonderful companionship during this period of the year. As I move around Probus Clubs, I hear so many stories about people who have gained so much from their Club membership of our wonderful organisation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who have taken on leadership positions in their Club, not only as members of their committee, but also

those who organise interest groups, who are greeters at meetings or who organise the morning teas; there are so many roles which go towards making a successful Probus Club. Also, we have many others who give up their time, members who lead Probus Associations, or act as Rotary Probus District Chairs, Probus District Chairs, or Ambassadors, all working together to help Clubs grow. December 5th this year is International Volunteer Day, and I would like to thank each of you for your work in making Probus such a successful organisation. Our Probus Clubs are an extremely important part of our local communities. I was reminded of this recently when I attended a lunchtime get-together of four Probus Clubs in northern Victoria. One of the Clubs operated in a town where there was extensive flooding about twelve months ago, and recovery is still underway. Several members from that Club recalled how important it was to belong to an organisation like Probus where

members were able to support each other in times of crisis. This example reminds me how important it is for our Clubs to continue to prosper and provide community and companionship into the future. We live in a world where family life is changing, and where loneliness has never been so widespread. I believe that as we head into the New Year, we should be mindful of the benefits we bring to our local communities, and we also need to look forward so that our Clubs are continuing to thrive and provide the same benefits in five- or tenyears’ time. On behalf of my fellow Directors, I am sending my warmest wishes your way. May the holiday season bring you good cheer and health throughout the coming year. Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Michael Ransom. Chair, Probus South Pacific Limited.

The Ghan in Katerine, NT, Australia

Nitmiluk Gorge

Riding the Rails in Style Dennis & Rosamund Knill discover the lost art of first-class travel aboard a luxury train as it rolls through the heart of Australia

So here we are at Darwin Berrimah Rail Terminal about to board the legendary Ghan. Our destination Adelaide and the beginning of a 2979km four-day journey from the top to the bottom end of Australia through some of the most isolated and rugged parts of this vast continent. Its fierce and uncompromisingly barren out there and by and large untouched. This is a harsh place, if not droughts, its fires and blistering heat painted in bright red. Our 5-star hotel on wheels is the end result of a celebrated history that all began in the mid 1850’s when the

first Afghan cameleers opened up inland Australia to European settlers ferrying goods and supplies with their ships of the desert. The Ghan takes its name from those early tenacious pioneers and follows their tracks through the Red Centre. Today it’s all about splendour with the train divided into two classes of travel, Platinum and Gold. We’re travelling Platinum which is much cosier and a lot more spacious. Cabins include a foldaway writing desk, coffee table, four music channels, Wifi, built in wardrobes, double or single beds, quality linen and bathrobes, an ensuite with a full-size shower

stacked with towels and a range of high-quality complimentary bathroom amenities. Gold is a little more compact with cabins transformed into sleeping berths with fold down bunks at night, a separate shower and toilet. Whatever your choice or whatever you can afford the experience will not disappoint. We’re greeted and escorted to our elegant surroundings by Alison who is just as thrilled, perhaps this is her maiden journey? With luggage quickly unpacked and stored away Isabela greets us with chilled champagne and a colour booklet full of daily off train experiences for us to choose en-route to Adelaide. On cue, 10.00am and its time to travel. The wheels begin to turn slowly and as we pull away from the station a strong crowd of wellwishers are waving off friends from the platform. We sigh, settle back and sip our champagne as the train slides gracefully out of Darwin.

Size goes with territory in Australia and The Ghan is no exception. During peak time the train has up to 44 carriages stretching 1.1 kilometres.

TRAVEL

On this journey there are 27 carriages stretching 700 meters pulled by two powerful 4,400hp locomotives. On board there are 178 passengers including 54 Platinum serviced by a crew of twelve including four chefs. This is first class travel at its very best.

Relax, reflect and be invigorated with pre-dinner drinks and fine wines served with dinner by thoroughly professional wait staff in the exclusive dining cabin. Australia has a wealth of food ingredients and the cuisine on board offers an astonishing rich regional selection from a galley that takes pain with details that is unlikely to disappoint. Breakfast selections include fresh tropical juice, cereals and yoghurt followed by mains that change daily. Equally appetizing are the lunch and dinner menus, crocodile dumplings, duck breast with parsnip puree, grilled barramundi, braised

beef finished with sensationally good desserts as gateau, ice cream, mousse and mango parfait are a taste of what is to come. Tables settings are immaculately laid with pure white linen, heavy silverware and vases of fresh flowers. During the day barista coffee and tea with moorish biscuits are available. First stop Katherine the 4th largest settlement in the Northern Territory. Full of gorges and misty waterfalls, thermal springs and ancient cultures we opt for cruising the Nitmiluk Gorge. Winding our way through the gorge we experience dramatic ancient scenery, century old aboriginal paintings and the shrill of the cicadas reverberating off the cliff faces while the tour guide gives a commentary on the indigenous Jawoyn people and their spiritual connection. After a gourmet breakfast the following day we arrive at Alice Springs the 2nd largest town in the Territory and gateway to the Red Centre. Nestled between the MacDonnell Ranges, Alice is famous for its desert landscapes, strong

aboriginal culture, Royal Flying Doctor Service and home to the 150-year-old Overland Telegraph Line that once linked Darwin to Adelaide. We sign up for the Simpsons Gap tour a 4-hour leisurely discovery walk and one of locals most favourite places to visit. One look at the spectacular landscape and it’s easy to see why. Located in Tjoritja National Park this scenic oasis of gorges and towering cliffs encapsulates the best of Central Australia’s natural landscape. Time to freshen up to rejoin our fellow guests before our coach transfers us to the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station for an extravaganza BBQ dinner under a million stars. Seated in the courtyard we’re treated with fine wines while a trio of musicians entertain us in the background. Tables set with crisp white tablecloths and the soft night air was hauntingly beautiful making this a night that no one would ever forget. Day three starts with admiring the early morning colours of central Australia.

Before our arrival at the remote railway siding of Manguri we were fortunate to observe a mob of kangaroos engaged in Mexican standoffs and a pair of emus streaking across the plains. After breakfast we drive along the red dusty outback roads bound for Coober Pedy, the opal mining capital of the world and where people live underground. Famous for its mine shafts and “that’s one small step for man” lunarlike landscape, quirky history and labyrinth of underground houses, hotels and shops. At first glance this seems like a rough and ready sleepy little town however it doesn’t take long to realise this place is full of life. After a morning of discovery and a determination to find the

biggest opal, we lunch in an enormous underground cave. The next day while enjoying a leisurely brunch it suddenly dawns how time has passed so quickly.

After four wonderful days as we edge towards civilisation, we observe a dramatic change in the landscape as the rich ochre tones of the vast outback make way for the green fields and farmland. Approaching suburbia even a wellknown city like Adelaide can become a stranger from the window of a train and unable to escape the unsightly

graffiti spattered on buildings and fences rarely seen by road. As we pull into Adelaide Parklands Terminal our suitcases are packed the cleaners are waiting to board as the carriages empty. We are feeling a little sad as we say our goodbyes to the train staff and our new friends that we met along the way. Another journey ends and another begins! HAWKE'S BAY

Summer of gannets, takahē, giant wētā and more! Gannet Safaris Overland, one of Hawke’s Bay’s premiere tourist activities, opens for its 2023/24 season this weekend, as thousands of the 20,000 strong gannet colony who call Cape Kidnappers home begin to arrive and nest. it enroute to the gannets, visitors would ask questions about how they could support the amazing work the sanctuary does to nurture and protect native species. So, we set up an optional carbon offset programme, adding $4 to the tour fee and then established donation boxes, so there were mechanisms for our guests to have an impact on the special place they were seeing, many for the first time.”

The only operator providing tours to the world’s largest accessible gannet colony, Gannet Safaris Overland offers a new package this season - one that is bound to entice nature lovers to learn more about the restoration and regeneration of the Cape Kidnappers peninsula. It has partnered with Cape Sanctuary to offer an exclusive wildlife experience that will sit

alongside its hugely popular gannet tours, with Gannet Safaris Overland GM Sophie Phillips explaining that the partnership cements an existing – and thriving – relationship between the business she manages and the sanctuary. “We’ve always had a close relationship with Cape Sanctuary,” Sophie says. “We were increasingly finding that when passing through

The total raised over last year’s season – $3654.60 – was handed over to Cape Sanctuary in June and will go towards nursery production and planting of a further 70,000 trees. Aimee Pitcher of Cape Sanctuary says the team were “ecstatic” to learn of the efforts to support the work she and her team does. “The sanctuary runs at huge deficit every year. Volunteer labour and donations like this are key to our longevity.

HAWKE'S BAY

Gannet on nest

It was wonderful to hear that locals and international visitors were happy to donate towards making a positive environmental impact on the peninsula. “Some species like miro and matai require several years in the Cape Sanctuary nursery before they are ready to plant,” Aimee continues, “and it costs a significant amount to care for each tree – but being able to share these amazing trees with generations to come makes the wait, and the cost, worthwhile.”

12

issue 41 • summer 2023

Aimee says conversations eventually turned to other ways Gannet Safaris Overland could enable more guests to experience the wonder of the acclaimed wilderness area, and a partnership was formalised in early August. The Cape Sanctuary Tour departs from Ocean Beach daily, dependent on demand. It uses luxury private vehicles to transport visitors to the protected site – the brainchild of its benefactors Andy and Liz Lowe, and American philanthropist Jay

Robertson.

Over 3.5 magical hours, it takes in the nursery, the East Cape’s best preserved sand dune system, and the pest-free enclosure where guests have a chance to spot takahē, colourful kākāriki, tuatara, giant wētā and learn about the sanctuary’s expanding seabird project.

HAWKE'S BAY

Of course, there are also plenty of gannets onsite, as their breeding season begins in Hawke’s Bay. Sophie says this year is set to be the busiest yet. “We’re looking at a record cruise season and high visitor numbers which is a huge relief for every local operator, after our efforts were cruelly cut short by Cyclone Gabrielle in February,” she says. In fact, Sophie says the gannets may have acted as weather vanes. “We were stumped – our gannets all disappeared over a couple of days, way earlier than they normally do. We had to unexpectedly close our tours. A few hours later, the cyclone struck.”

Sophie and Aimee

But with these transitory birds now back for summer and busily building nests, she says she’s “excited” to see how the summer pans out. As ever, daytime tours and the visually stunning sunrise tours are on offer, and the gannets, who exhibit plenty of personality on any given day, can even be viewed on Christmas morning – a very special treat for birdlovers.

“Last season we were tracking to nearly 95% of pre-Covid numbers until the cyclone hit,” says Sophie. “With our existing

tours already booking out, and our collaboration with Cape Sanctuary bound to be popular, we can’t wait to welcome visitors again.” For booking information on any Gannet Safaris Overland tours, go to https://gannetsafaris.co.nz/

As a family-run cruise line, Fred. Olsen really take your experience personally. While the rest of the cruise industry has gone for bigger ships, Fred.Olsen has always believed that smaller is better. They have less guests on board, so the service is personal, and the atmosphere is warm and civilised. Their elegant, smaller ships can reach places the bigger ships cannot and are able to dock at smaller ports in more interesting places. Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines has a small team of specialist itinerary planners. They take great pride in hand-crafting each journey, to ensure they show their guests hidden gems as well as highlights on each of their sailings. It is a passion that has won them the Cruise Critic award for Best Itineraries every year since 2015. In 2024, Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines is looking forward to hosting two very lucky NZ Active Retiree Prize Winners on a cruise of the British Isles, showcasing amazing scenic landscapes and wildlife of the region. The cruise

line is based in the UK with departures from various regional ports. On this cruise you will embark the elegant Borealis in Dover on 22 July 2024. Her smaller size, and spacious public areas, open deck spaces and impressive array of restaurants, lounges and facilities make her perfect for longer and shorter voyages alike. This 9-night cruise encompasses the most northern and southern shores of Britain, combining scenic landscapes, remote islands, wildlife havens and fascinating history. Joining you onboard will be a team of conservationists from wildlife charity ORCA, who will be on deck with you to identify the different species of cetacean you might see, particularly in the waters surrounding Scotland. Home to the Harbour Porpoise – spot the smallest cetacean found in Scottish waters, visiting bottlenose and common dolphins, and maybe whales. There may also be the opportunity to see puffins

returning to the cliffs of the Small Isles. The history of the region is varied and interesting. The Orkney Islands were heavily involved during the World War II as Scapa Flow has a large natural harbour and was used as a Naval Base for the British Fleet. Today there are still many batteries and gun emplacements dotted throughout the islands. Shore excursions will be guided by a knowledgeable Wartime Guide. St Peter Port, UK is the main port town of the Channel Islands, and similarly is very historic having been occupied by the Germans but is also incredibly picturesque. There is much evidence of Georgian and Regency architecture, heavily influenced y the French. The 800-year-old Castle Cornet has seen many conflicts and hold considerable artefacts from over the centuries. Enter the prize draw today and we hope to welcome you onboard!

HEALTH

Mental health: Learning to Love Who You Are Have you ever wondered why you’re so hard on yourself?

Perhaps you simply take it for granted, and have never stopped to consider the negative, nagging, internal voice may not actually be telling the truth. Psychologists believe it may apply to between 30% and 50% of the population. A negative internal voice can have its origins in several different sources. Whatever the cause, listening to a berating internal voice can quickly develop into a habit difficult to shake. One of the ways we can try to counter this negativity

is by learning to love ourselves. Write a list of 20 (yup – that many!) things you like about yourself (if you’re having difficulty, ask a friend for some suggestions) Make a date with yourself Everyone is deserving of enjoyable time-out, but how often do we take it? Make a daily date with yourself to do something pleasant. It can be as simple as picking flowers from your garden and arranging them in a vase

for the table. Or driving or bussing to a new destination for a carefree walk. Be kind to yourself These days, we’re bombarded with society’s demands: eat this/don’t eat that, volunteer, save-save-save, don’t waste food, cut back on the power bill … Not that these aren’t all good aims, but once a week, ignore the demands, and do what you feel like doing. Buy the take-away meal, splurge on a trinket, toss out the left over you don’t really want to eat, take a long hot shower, or fill the bath tub and enjoy a soak.

Looking good equates to feeling good, and it’s more than OK to put on a smart outfit, even if you’re staying home (isn’t that what aprons are for?). So, get out the hair product, the makeup (if you wear it), and the top you’ve been saving for best – because you are the best!

These Top 5 Brain Supplements Can Help Sharpen Memory and Boost Cognition Key factors to look for in a topnotch cognitive health supplement and how you can spot the scams. If you're noticing more frequent brain fog, memory lapses, and "senior moments" lately, the underlying cause may be more than just the distractions of a busy schedule or a few nights of poor-quality sleep. Agerelated cognitive decline may be to blame. A gradual decline in cognitive ability is a natural consequence of getting older, and new studies have indicated this begins to occur in the early to mid 40s. To store and retrieve new information, the brain relies on acetylcholine, which plays an essential role in forming neural connections. Unfortunately, as we age, production of this key neurotransmitter decreases, limiting the brain's ability to create new short-term memories. This is why you might be able to easily recall people or events from decades ago, but it can be a struggle to remember where you parked your car or where you left your keys.

24

No one can stop the progression of time. However, a combination of a healthy lifestyle and a well-rounded cognitive health supplement can keep your mind sharp and help recapture the focus, concentration, and mental clarity you had years ago. How Can You Tell a Good Memory Supplement from a Bad One? Recent studies have indicated that approximately 40% of people will struggle with age-related memory

lapses at some point during their lifetime, especially over age 65. In addition, our reliance on electronic devices rather than our brains to remember names, dates, and numbers is only making the situation worse. Perhaps it is no surprise, then, that public demand for cognitive enhancement products is growing rapidly. And yet, not all supplements are created equal. The fastgrowing market for brain-boosting supplements has lured many

companies to release ineffective supplements containing questionable ingredients with little or no proof of efficacy. In our analysis, we noticed a number of companies making exaggerated claims about the cognitive improvements you can realize by using their products, not all of which are likely. What kind of results can you realistically expect from a brain supplement? When Will You See Results? The ingredients in most cognitive health products can provide some noticeable improvements within 30 days. However, it may take additional time to restore optimal acetylcholine production and maximize your brain's ability to forge new neural pathways. Research suggests that 3 months of

daily use helps significantly increase the likelihood of lasting improvement. Here is a reasonable timeline to expect: • Month 1: You may feel less forgetful and more focused as you experience less frequent "senior moments."

Month 2: You may notice that your short-term memory feels considerably sharper with greater capacity and faster recall. Month 3: Peak cognitive potential is reached. You may experience long-lasting improvement in memory retention, greater concentration and alertness, and a renewed confidence in your mind.

• Tip: For best results, focus on consistency. Adding an effective memory supplement to your daily routine for at least 3 months promotes exponential improvement, as each dose builds on the benefits of the last. So, what characteristics distinguish top-tier mind and memory products from the rest of the pack?

Calling All Seniors Your Opportunity to Shape the Future of Medicine Every medicine is a discovered treasure. Yet, many diseases remain uncharted territories awaiting treatment discovery. Clinical studies have the potential to improve lives by developing new or better treatments, especially for those without a cure. At Optimal Clinical Trials, we believe research can transform lives and make a positive impact. It’s a privilege for our team to have been part of important clinical studies, made possible by our study volunteers. The FDA approved the world’s first RSV vaccine for older adults, a breakthrough for those aged 60 and above, especially those with

underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease. Novavax shared exciting results from their Phase 2 trial of COVIDInfluenza Combination (CIC), standalone influenza, and high-dose COVID vaccine candidates in adults aged 50 to 80. All three vaccine candidates showed strong immune responses and were well-tolerated, a significant step toward effective vaccines for the flu and COVID. In 2018, our site played a key role in Esperion Therapeutics' Cardiovascular Disease Research Study, proving Bempedoic acid's effectiveness in reducing heart-related events, offering hope to statin-

intolerant cardiovascular patients. Clinical trials are crucial for improving medicine, but they need volunteers. People of all backgrounds, healthy or not, can participate for free. Each trial has unique criteria, including age and health conditions, determining who can participate. Being a study volunteer may provide access to potential new treatments and specialised medical care. Ready to make a difference and be part of the journey to medical discovery? Do you or someone you know have one of the following conditions? Severe Asthma Coeliac Disease Moderate to severe Eczema Rheumatoid Arthritis (newly diagnosed) Urinary Tract Infections (60+ year olds) We are a leading clinical research centre in New Zealand and are looking for Aucklanders with these conditions to volunteer for clinical studies. The 5 Must-Have Ingredients for a Good Memory Supplement: Alpha GPC Alpha GPC naturally occurs in the body as a precursor to acetylcholine, one of the key neurotransmitters in the brain's neural network. As a supplement, this compound rapidly crosses the blood-brain barrier and helps promote the synthesis of acetylcholine. In addition, alpha GPC encourages the development of cell membranes in the cerebral cortex, or "gray matter," for improved mental processing.

in the body. This brain-boosting mushroom also helps promote production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that plays a crucial role in maintaining and regenerating neurons.

Huperzine A Huperzine A has been shown to increase bioavailable levels of acetylcholine by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks it down, acetylcholinesterase. This fosters an ideal environment to form new neural connections and improve memory retention. Note that while huperzine A is extracted from huperzia serrata, they are not the same ingredient. Look for supplements that specifically contain huperzine A.

Bacopa Monnieri Bacopa monnieri is an herb commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its positive influence on memory and focus. Studies indicate the bacoside compounds contained in this potent plant cross the blood-brain barrier and, like huperzine A, help boost levels of acetylcholine by limiting its breakdown by acetylcholinesterase. In this way, bacopa monnieri helps generate new neural pathways.

Lion's Mane Mushroom Used for thousands of years by Buddhist monks to increase focus during meditation, lion's mane mushroom helps improve cognition by enhancing activity of choline acetyltransferase, which is responsible for the synthesis of acetylcholine

Warning Signs of Potential Scams Lack of Clinical Studies Be wary of companies that cite the clinical efficacy of individual ingredients within a product rather than the effectiveness of the product. The highest indicator of quality in a supplement is the commission of a placebo-controlled clinical study for safety and effectiveness by an independent third party. This is of particular importance when assessing the claims of a brain supplement, as participants can be evaluated for quantifiable performance improvements on a standardized cognitive test. Ginkgo Biloba Ginkgo biloba, one of the world's oldest tree species, has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine for its neuroprotective effects. Its root bark and leaves are rich in ginkgolide compounds, which help promote higher concentrations of

acetylcholine in key regions of the brain responsible for decision-making and short-term memory recall. They are also beneficial for cerebral blood circulation. Perhaps even more important, there are certain red flags to be wary of when evaluating a cognitive enhancement supplement.

You expect the same high standard of research and testing before trusting a medication, so why wouldn't you do the same before trusting a supplement?

As members of Parawera Estate Residents Society, owners will enjoy beautiful, landscaped grounds surrounded by native bush, and access to tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool and a host of supporting facilities within and outside the community buildings. The properties at Winnie Close are located in a private culde-sac which includes a small reserve with their own boat and trailer park, all just a short 12-minute drive from Taupō town centre.

The Design Affordable. Priced at less than $500,000 these homes offer great value for owners of any age. - Designed to keep heating and cooling costs low, features include thermal breaks to all windows, deep overhangs at the eaves and a heat pump. - A comparable home elsewhere in Taupō, without access to the same fantastic facilities, could set you back an additional $200,000. The interest costs on that $200,000 alone far outstrip ongoing costs at Winnie Close (even at much lower rates than current). After homes in phase one were snapped up earlier in the year, phase two is now complete and ready to move into. The third and final phase of 6 houses will be completed in 2024. Sustainable. Architecturally designed houses ensure good use of sustainable materials, and off-street parking includes the option to have an EV charger fitted. All properties include a north-facing living room and main bedroom, with sliding windows opening directly onto your garden.

The Design.

Accessible. Single-storey homes with open-plan kitchen and living room, and access to your own private garden areas to the front and rear of the property. The two bedrooms have fitted wardrobes and further storage is provided by a separate store room. And the best part. The unit belongs to you, as a primary or secondary home, or an investment property. When it’s time to sell, you’ll have no management charges. The proceeds from any sale will be yours to enjoy. Priced at less than $500,000 and with only 4 homes available in phase two, these properties will go fast.

Diversify Investments... For seniors aged 6O and above, investment strategies should prioritise capital preservation, income generation, and moderate growth to ensure financial security during retirement. Consider a diversified portfotio that includes a mix of lowrisk assets. Blue-chip stocks with a history of stable dividends can provide a reliable income stream. Dividend- focused mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) may offer exposure to a basket of such stocks, reducing individual stock risk. Fixed-income investments, like government bonds or high-quality corporate bonds, can provide steady income while preserving capital.

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are also worth exploring to safeguard against inflation eroding purchasing power. Real estate investment trusts (REITs) can offer a blend of income and potential appreciation. Healthcare and utility sector REITs, in particular, may align well with the needs of seniors. Diversification can extend to alternative investments like annuities, which provide a guaranteed income stream, and precious metals, which can act as a hedge against economic uncertainty. Doing your own research or engaging with an 100% independent

financial advisor can help you tailor a strategy based on individual risk tolerance, financial goals, and health considerations. Regular portfolio reviews and adjustments ensure alignment with changing circumstances, fostering a secure and comfortable retirement for seniors.

There are also 12 second and third place getters (detail below), with a total awards prize pool worth NZD$185,000. INVEST

Simplicity launches new investment opportunity By Gilbert Peterson

Simplicity may still be a new boy on the investment block but they’ve been growing now for 7 years “from four of us around the kitchen table” to 35 staff now with $5.3 billion of funds, and a KiwSaver default provider. Then just recently Simplicity launched a new investment opportunity, their Homes & Income Fund where you can invest as little as $1000 in New Zealand’s residential property market without having to come up with a hefty deposit. They’re also a nonprofit so I started our Active Seniors interview with MD and co-founder Sam Stubbs asking how does that work? “We are structured very much like Southern Cross,” he said. “A charity, the Simplicity Foundation, owns 100% of the fund manager Simplicity which is a nonprofit company.” (The amounts given to various charities are listed at https://simplicity.kiwi) “So while we can make a cash surplus every month (and nearly always do), we either put aside that as

34

issue 41 • summer 2023

a rainy day fund for the business, or try and minimise it with fee cuts in the future.“ Why the name, Homes & Income Fund? “Over the next 10-15 years we’re aiming to build 10,000 homes for long term rent, lend 10,000 low cost 1st home mortgages, and fund 5,000 more community homes. Our vision is to help thousands more families into homes across New Zealand. “The ‘income’ bit is because the target is for 60% of the fund to be in residential housing investments and 40% in cash investments. “It’s important to emphasise that it’s an investment fund. There is no capital guarantee, and the fund could go up and down. But I do like it that the underlying security is in all the housing and cash investments, which have been reliable performers over time. “And the fund (provides) full access to your money at any time,

Sam Stubbs Co-Founder and Managing Director of Simplicity.

with no break fees. And you can do regular withdrawals too.” But why Simplicity and not one of the others? “It is very unlikely any stock picking firm will out-perform one focussed on passive investing with low fees over time. That's not an opinion. The facts support it. Studies by Standard & Poors show the chances of an active manager beating the market, after fees, get worse over time.” Sam Stubbs has been CEO of Tower Investments and has worked with Goldman Sachs in London and Hong Kong and elsewhere. He’s father to four children and says he has no time for any hobbies. He set up Simplicity as a low-cost, non-profit KiwiSaver and Investment Fund manager with the bold aims of investing ethically, charge as low fees as possible and donate 15% of all fees to charity. MUSIC

Making music together in a village

Ukuleles in the Plains In Arvida’s new Waimea Plains retirement community in Nelson, a very different musical group has developed.

To find out more about the village’s ukulele group, I talked with residents Raewyn Flyger and Judy Martin, and Village Manager Jason Edkins. Raewyn and Judy are both foundation residents, moving in at the start. It all began when Raewyn (and her banjolele and ukulele) came to a meeting of residents interested in music. From there the singing group and ukulele group were born. In practice, you can’t really separate them. Technically, the ukulele group practices on a Tuesday evening, then the following Tuesday it accompanies the singing group; in practice many of the singing group turn up to ukulele group practice and sing along anyway. Raewyn says,

“I play in another Nelson ukulele group, The Plinkers, and we’ve been able to share their music. Nothing’s formal here, it’s simply people in the village who have a love of music and singing.” Judy had given up playing the ukulele because of her arthritis but was quickly persuaded to take it up again. Most players in the group haven’t played since their school days. Judy says some of them are rusty and lack confidence initially, but they’ve all improved over time and are proud of what they can now play. Jason adds, “Most of the residents really appreciate music – there are people I mightn’t have expected to take part in this but they love it.”

The group is part of key events in the village, including singing for staff at times. They composed a farewell song for the administrator when she left to move to Christchurch recently, to the tune of “You are my Sunshine”; sales manager Kerryn scored a personalised birthday serenade to “My bonnie lies over the ocean”. The singing group now numbers about 25-30, and the ukulele group seven. They play and sing at the Anzac Day morning tea and other events, and, according to Judy, “when well-known musicians die, we dust off their greatest hits and play them.” For something that looks deceptively casual, it still takes quite a bit of background organising, and both musical groups are grateful for the wholehearted support they get from Jason as manager. However, both Raewyn and Judy stress that, like most of the activities at the village, the groups are resident led. They’re lucky to have a skilled pianist, Carol, who holds it all together: “Carol’s a wonderful pianist – we can just give her the chords and she takes it from there.” It’s important that anyone can take part; “Some people are initially diffident, thinking that the singing group might be a choir singing in parts, but when they realise they can just sing along they’re in, and they enjoy it so much.”

Into The Heart of Fiordland Journey into the heart of remote ice-carved mountains, verdant forests and the winding fiords of Fiordland aboard Heritage Expeditions luxurious 18-guest expedition yacht Heritage Explorer.

Cruise into the unexplored heart of Fiordland with Heritage Expeditions

Nowhere in New Zealand is the ‘go big or go home’ mantra more apparent than New Zealand’s iconic national treasure and wonderland Fiordland, where glacier-cleaved peaks tower over grand waterways and expansive coves. Explore this natural paradise aboard Heritage Expeditions intimate expedition yacht and venture to some of the country’s most remote and isolated destinations. Fiordland’s fascinating mix of wildlife, conservation and early New Zealand history inspired pioneering Kiwi family-owned-and-operated small ship expedition cruise company Heritage Expeditions dream for

responsible travel 40 years ago, and they have been sharing this special part of the world with like-minded travellers on their unique itineraries ever since. Established in 1952, Fiordland National Park is now over 1.2 million hectares in size and rightly famous for its epic, grand-scale scenery, untamed wilderness and unique wildlife. Encounter Bottlenose Dolphins, Fiordland Crested Penguins and New Zealand Fur Seals as you journey through this slice of paradise. Fiordland is rich in natural history and home to many historical firsts and important conservation projects.

Māori legend describes how demigod Tū Te Rakiwhanoa carved out the region's fiords with his adze, Te Hamo, from rock walls to create the expansive landscape we know today. Captain Cook and his crew were the first Europeans to visit, landing here aboard HMS Resolution in 1773 and spending five weeks in Dusky Sound. Cook's records of his discovery and maps would attract sealers and whalers not long after, who would go on to form the first European settlements of New Zealand and shape the future of the entire country. The majority of Fiordland's sounds are only accessible by sea, making them among the most remote areas of New Zealand's mainland. Waterfalls, streams, rivers and fiords are enveloped with misty veils that come and go, revealing steep gradients of mountain peaks and sheltered valleys. The isolation of these fiords has been beneficial in ensuring their epic beauty remains unspoiled and historic sites undisturbed. While Milford Sound is rightly famous, those looking for an authentic exploration well off the traditional tourist route can sail into the heart of Fiordland and retrace the steps of Captain Cook along the shorelines of World Heritage Area Dusky Sound, one of Fiordland's largest fiords some 40-kilometres long and studded with more than 350 islands. Also discover New Zealand's deepest fiord Doubtful Sound, which boasts lush rainforests, towering waterfalls and resident populations of New Zealand Fur Seals and rare Fiordland Crested Penguins. Join Heritage Expeditions on the voyage of a lifetime cruising the calm waters of Fiordland, where Mother Nature is at her most grand, aboard their all-inclusive luxurious 18-guest expedition yacht Heritage Explorer. www.heritage-expeditions.com

Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines channel all their 175 years of experience sailing and discovering the world into making every single day special for their guests.

The most wonderful way to sail the world is aboard an elegant smaller ship, feeling close to the sea and accessing more interesting places – to the furthest reaches of Norway’s lesser-known fjords, through narrow waterways and canals and to the very heart of some of the world’s most beautiful cities. Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines journey planners put so much consideration and pride into crafting itineraries afresh each year. They want you to sail the most imaginative routes and to visit the world’s most wonderful destinations at the very best possible times to experience them – such as Mumbai during the Holi Festival, and the coast of Canada during the largest migration of Humpback whales on earth. They have been awarded Cruise 40

Critic’s ‘Best Itineraries’ for five consecutive years. They ensure every single day is stimulating and enjoyable with ‘Treats of the Region’ cooking demonstrations, and the “Itinerary Insights” informative talks are curated specially for the regions being visited. The unique ondeck ‘Stargazing’ talks help you to understand much about the universe we live in, and being out at sea with huge skies above is both fascinating and humbling. There is much that sets the experience of a Fred.Olsen cruise apart. But nothing more so than their people. As Mr. Olsen himself says, ‘It’s all about the people. All of it, everything”. Because the ships are smaller, the crew get to know you

more personally and to understand what you like. It is warm, attentive service the crew pride themselves on, and are well known for. After more than three years, in early 2024, Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines ship the Borealis returns ‘down under’ and visits New Zealand on her world cruise. The epic 101-night voyage includes Florida’s coast, the rainforests of Costa Rica, local cultures and volcanic vistas in Hawaii and the paradise islands of French Polynesia. Watch out for Borealis as she cruises New Zealand waters this summer enroute to Australia. Martin Lister, Head of Itinerary Planning and Destination Experience at Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines said: “Together with our trusted partners, we have planned some incredible once-in-a-lifetime experiences to enable guests to truly immerse themselves in the destination they are visiting. These include seeing Uluru at sunrise in Australia, discovering more about village life in Papua New Guinea on a shore tour to see local women demonstrate the age-old technique of clay pot making and spending time with a Dabbawala in Mumbai delivering tiffin lunch boxes.” A program of global cruise itineraries provides a myriad of cruise options in 2024 and 2025.
