Chair Message

As we enter a new year, Probus Clubs around New Zealand will be looking forward to their Annual General Meetings in March.

I am aware that many Clubs have been preparing for the past few months; it is really important that we plan ahead, look to introducing new members on to our committees, and, most importantly, look forward to the future to ensure that we continue our great work of delivering fun, friendship and fellowship in our local communities.

While it would be ideal to have all Management Committee positions filled at an Annual General Meeting, that is not always the case. Not having all positions filled is a challenge but it does not mean that a Club has to close. If your Club is experiencing difficulties in filling Committee positions, please reach out to our Team.

For a number of years now, I have spent each January working at the Australian Open Tennis championships in Melbourne. I have met many players, past players, coaches and officials during that time, and I have always been impressed with the dedication they have shown to reach that level in their

chosen sport. Not all of them make a great deal of money from tennis, but they all love it, and show true dedication to reaching that level.

So, it is with Probus. We have many people in our Probus community who realise the importance of what we do, in providing a real sense of community and companionship to retired and semi-retired people in our local towns and suburbs, by providing opportunities for people to come together and enjoy each other’s company. I believe we really are providing a great service to our local communities.

This year, 2024, marks fifty years since Probus first arrived in the South Pacific. Our first Club, Kapiti Coast Probus near Wellington, started on 4 November 1974. It is still going strong, and at present has one hundred and eighteen members. A series of celebrations will be taking place in New Zealand over the course of 2024. No matter the distance, across Australia and New Zealand, we are all members of the same

Probus family so why not think about travelling around New Zealand on Trade Travel’s fully escorted 50 th Anniversary Tour of New Zealand. Contact our team for more information on this tour. For those that cannot travel, think about marking the celebration in some way as 50 years of Probus, no matter where it is very special. It is staggering when you think about the thousands of retirees Probus has helped stay engaged and connected in over 50 years.

I would like to thank all the committee members and other helpers who have served their Clubs so effectively over the past year, and welcome new Committee members and helpers who are taking on roles in 2024. Also, welcome back to those members who are continuing on in their roles in the new Probus year. I wish you well, and be assured, you are carrying out a great service for your local community.

Dreamboat for Hire

Dennis & Rosamund Knill board a luxury liner and soon discover what it’s really like to experience the new wave of cruising that has dawned post pandemic.

Cruising is back! At any given time, on any given day, at any given port a cruise ship is slipping its moorings heading for the open sea. So many ships, so many ports, so many choices, after years of being in the doldrums cruising has become one of the fastest growing sectors of international travel. Today it’s Auckland’s turn. On a warm summer’s day at the height of the cruise season, berthed alongside Queen’s Wharf is one of Holland America’s growing fleet of ships preparing to sail off into the sunset as it circumvents New Zealand on route to Sydney.

Weighing in at 82,318 tons with 986 cabins spread over eleven decks (two-thirds with private balconies) this towering and impressive piece of modern-day shipbuilding gives its joyful passengers an opportunity to escape the day-to-day pressures of the real world. On board ms Noordam are 1972 passengers made up of 91 Kiwis, 243 Australians with the balance

predominantly American followed by a small contingent of Canadians and Asians.

This tall and sophisticated vessel comes with indescribable luxury that is light years away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. With 770 crew from 40 different countries this is United Nations at its best ready and willing to spoil all those on board.

Checking in is simplicity itself and while our luggage was being whisked away to our cabin by the ships steward’s we gave the ships photographer an obligatory smile on our way to a compulsory muster station drill before getting the urge to explore the irresistible.

Going on a cruise these days does not cost the earth and during summer each year thousands of New Zealanders are riding the royal wave on dozens of luxury superliners cruising our waters. Such is the popularity that 127 cruise ships will berth in Auckland this year alone. While most Kiwis have a special affinity with the sea, when one thinks of taking a cruise, cruising around New Zealand is not a destination that readily springs to mind. But for

Cruising is back with one of Holland America's impressive ships: the MS Noordam.

first timers this is probably the best opportunity to experience what life is really like on board a floating 5-star resort.

Relaxation starts the moment you set foot on board and the sense of space is liberating so you will never feel crowded. Stroll the spacious decks, sink into a voluptuous armchair in one of the many elegant lounges or spend some quiet time in the drawing room with its library books and countless board games. Perhaps a movie appeals or a flutter at the casino, maybe a tutored wine tasting or cooking lesson to entrance one’s palate or just chill out in one of the two swimming pools and three hot tubs. And for the fitness freaks, feel motivated to exercise in the state-of-the-art gymnasium or indulge in the spa with its enticing range of beauty therapies that promises ageless bliss?

There’s something remarkably liberating about cruising, freedom from time restraints plays a big part as does testing yourself each day to see how much food you can eat

in any one sitting in any one of six restaurants?

Noordam comes with an army of 200 chefs who prepare 9,000 meals a day. We learn the average weight gain put on by passengers over a 14-day cruise is between four to eight kilos. We ponder whether to eat up and be merry or diet?

The Lido restaurant on the upper deck is informal and offers a full buffet service morning noon and night plus a deli bar with lighter and healthier meals. In contrast the Dining Room on decks two and three are more formal with the option of open dining or at a time to suit. For a small cover charge Pinnacle, a much smaller silver service grill with its specialty of 15 ounce steaks, Tamarind, an Asian inspired pop-up eatery or Canaletto an experience in Italian suave with Italian

sophistication notably famous for its homemade pastas. Whatever your choice you will not be disappointed.

Day two comes all too quickly with our arrival into Tauranga. For most of the afternoon we walk casually around Mount Maunganui taking in some much needed retail therapy. Later our fellow passengers who visited Rotorua recalled their frustration when the coach driver locked the keys in the bus and they spent two hours standing in the rain until a replacement key was delivered Napier calls, it’s hugely atmospheric with its art deco buildings and its lush orchards and vineyards that contribute to some undeniably fine cuisine. They’re a

hospitable lot and as we disembark the Dixie band is belting away, it’s all rather festive and an opportunity to stroll around the city with its gleaming vintage cars and their proud owners bedecked in resplendent clothing from a bygone era.

Good morning Lyttleton. We smile again for the camera as we head off for a 2-hour sightseeing tour of Christchurch. We are amazed by the flamboyancy of the new building’s architecture and the extent of the masses of buildings still under construction from the 2011 earthquake.

Timaru, Port Chalmers is our next port of call and the gateway to Dunedin. Famous for its university students, brewery, Scottish heritage and deceased chocolate factory. The Port itself invites you to explore its architectural heritage, a mixture of charming shops, cafes and hotels

The following morning much to everyone’s disappointment Captain Mark Zoll advises passengers that owing to extreme gale force winds and potential 40 foot swells entering

Milford Sound has been cancelled. With the extra day gained, a change of course was ordered to miss the storm but not without 25 foot swells which proved to be a testing time for many of the passengers.

Heading for Tasmania it will be two days before we sight land again. By now we are truly relaxed and long passed being worried about getting cabin fever. Sleep does not come easily for many passengers crossing the Tasman until safely moored at Hobart. We opt for a hop-on-hop-off 90 minute tour of Hobart ended with a relaxing espresso and muffin at Coffee Roasters immediately across the road.

The next day we arrive at Melbourne. Most go ashore but we catch-up on emails and relax in the library until midday before going on a one-hour walking tour of the city.

Sydney is our final port. Disembarking we reflect on all the memories and the good times, nurture thoughts of hobnobbing with the Morrison’s from NYC, the Williams family from the Gold Coast and the

Coleman’s from Wellington, the wonderful activities on board, the excellent meals and vintage wines and the captain and his officers all in neatly pressed black and white uniforms.

Whatever you decide food and wine play a big part of daily life and is taken seriously by the ships owners.

The restaurants cater seamlessly to passengers every whim where the chefs and sommeliers place a lot of emphasis on the cuisine and wine. Long gone is the eat all you can mentality, in its place quality not quantity.

On the list of other things that the Noordam do well are the daily activities and promotions delivered to your cabin each evening. From 7am to 11pm everything from Tai Chi to Team Trivia to Bingo is covered in detail.

Our final night at sea was notable

for two things, a mood of finality, not one of sadness and a realisation that it was soon to end. Land feels odd and for those still to experience cruising would surely look down on us with resentment. But ms Noordam is enjoying a new golden age of cruising and is back in business with luxury cruises that are as popular as ever with packaged holidays bigger and better than the last one!

Need to Know

After 14-days at sea if you are wanting to extend your time in Sydney before flying back to New Zealand having access to affordable accommodation is equally important. We stayed at Hyatt Regency Sydney, a top notch hotel centrally located and adjacent to Darling Harbour.

It’s within walking distance to some of the best restaurants in Sydney, premier shopping precincts, public transport, galleries and theatres. On offer are some of the best rooms in the city, all-day restaurants, a roof bar with stunning views across Darling Harbour and a 24/7 gym to shed those unwanted kilos. And if you choose to dine out, Muum Maam is one of the best Asian eateries in Sydney. Otherwise talk to Gary Chan at the Concierge Desk who has an intimate knowledge of Sydney’ eating out scene.

Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines

Bronwyn Towersey - Cruise World, recently cruised with her brother onboard Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines the Borealis as she visited NZ during her 2024 World Cruise Voyage.

Experiencing

The Fred. Olsen Way, the 1300 guest Borealis delivers a traditional cruising style in a mid-size ship genre, well sought after by kiwis.

Bronwyn said “The Borealis has the trappings of a small ship cruise line; the ship is easy to navigate your way around; the crew know your name within a day or so. I Ioved the Promenade on Deck 3 where you could walk a full circle of the ship to the sound of the whooshing sea, and the invigorating sea air.”

Borealis features elegant, spacious public areas that exude maritime nostalgia. Art works from the personal collections of the Olsen family adorn the public areas, with antique furniture dating from the 1600’s and Chinese artefacts dating from 260BC on display – she is a floating gallery.

Itineraries are thoughtfully curated by Journey Planners each year to include different ports, and less visited coastal gems. Iceland, Greenland, Scandinavia and the British Isles are the Olsen’s forte and their stamping ground. With Norwegian heritage, they know this area like the back of their hand and the onboard RIBS provide adventures ashore, and at sea level to explore nature and scenery.

“A RIB gets you up close and personal with the flora and fauna of the destination” says Bronwyn, “guests enjoy adventure/soft expedition type experiences - it is quite magical”.

The culture, history, and natural wonders of the destination are illuminated by on-board guest speakers. Fred. Olsen partners

with ORCA, a marine conservation organisation with representatives on board, documenting marine mammal sightings, and guests can be part of this research program.

“These specialists can be found on the forecastle deck whilst cruising, their keen eyes can spot a frolicking pod of dolphins a mile off! It was special cruising through the Marlborough Sounds with dolphins making cheeky appearances” quips Bronwyn.

Dining on Borealis does not disappoint with two main restaurants, the poolside Grill, a sumptuous buffet, and two fantastic specialty restaurants – Colours & Tastes for Asian fusion, and Vasco for Goan inspired cuisine. The main dining restaurant offers traditional early or late seating, with the evening shows timed accordingly.

In keeping with traditional cruising experiences, High Tea is offered daily. “To the sound of chinking teacups, we indulged with three-tiered plates loaded with dainty sandwiches, pastries, mini tarts, and scones with clotted cream and jam. It was quite a treat and occasion”.

Fred. Olsen home ports out of the UK and has a large following of repeat guests. A favourite for NZers, having Borealis in NZ, has created more interest in the brand.

Rocky Mountaineer: Your Invitation to Explore the Rockies

Do you yearn to follow the route of gold-seeking pioneers, or is spotting wildlife top of your list? Do snow-capped peaks excite you, or do you want to see bold red sandstones?

Luxury train company Rocky Mountaineer offers four distinctive rail journeys exploring North America’s stunning scenery, with three Western Canadian and one US route.

Rockies to the Red Rocks is an epic two-day rail journey between Moab, Utah—right next to Arches National Park—and Denver, Colorado. It offers an up-close look at the burnt orange walls of Ruby Canyon, the magnificent Mount Garfield, a spectacular climb into the Colorado Rockies, and crossing the historic Moffat Tunnel.

The two-day First Passage to the West route rolls along the tracks of the country’s first coast-to-coast railway between Vancouver and Banff or Lake Louise. Pass by the rapids of Hell’s Gate, the twin rail bridges of Cisco Crossing, Craigellachie—the

site of the “last spike” driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway and experience the Spiral Tunnels. As you travel through Banff National Park be amazed by the towering Castle Mountain and Mount Rundle.

The two-day long Journey through the Clouds travels between Vancouver and Jasper traversing some of the most remote landscapes in Canada, with scenery and wildlife largely untouched by humans. Also passing Hell’s Gate—named for explorer Simon Fraser’s assertion that “surely these are the gates of Hell”—and Cisco Crossing. After your overnight stop, your train passes the three-tiered Pyramid Falls; Mount Albreda, and impressive Mount Robson.

For those wanting to delve further into Canada’s history and landscapes—and wanting more train-time—the three-day Rainforest

to Gold Rush route takes a northerly path to Jasper, uncovering stories of those seeking their fortune. This route boasts the most trestle bridges, a must-do for train fans.

With two overnight stops, you’ll climb through rainforest into the alpine alongside Howe Sound, pass the deep turquoise waters of Seton and Anderson lakes, travel along the Cariboo Plateau, cross Cottonwood River Bridge, and take in Mount Robson.

Rocky Mountaineer only travels by daylight, ensuring you’re not missing a moment of the adventure outside. Whether you’re travelling in SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf Service (or SilverLeaf Plus in the US), enjoy fresh cuisine paired with local wine or beer as your Hosts bring the scenery to life.

Can’t decide which route is for you? Remember each journey can be travelled in either direction and you can combine routes or take a return journey for more time on the train. You can even combine your Canadian Rocky Mountaineer journey with an Alaska Cruise to explore all Western Canada has to offer.

The Quail Trail

From slushy bog to a cool oasis

Greenwood Park Village wins prestigious Sustainability Award!

Greenwood Park’s resident-led Gardening and Landscape Award at the inaugural Retirement Village Association Sustainability Awards 2022. The group was awarded the accolade for their outstanding decades long work, transforming a once boggy wasteland, through dedication and hard work.

Resident, and Chair of the Greenwood Park Environmental Sustainability Group, Stephen Parr, speaking about the Quail Trail, said that it has a rich history that started after the village was in its first year of completion in late 1985. Indeed, a labour of love and pride and the rest is history… but wait, there’s more!

The Quail Trial... ...has been decades in the making and is now a major focus for the next few

years. Past and present residents with a range of skills have been involved volunteering and working in this ongoing project.

What once was a wasteland, has since been transformed into a tranquil nature trail where quails inhabit; strutting along, with their little crowns on their proud heads, to where they know the residents will give them their next feed. Resident cats don’t bother to give chase, as the quails are much attuned to feline ways, can run faster, also fly.

The first resident of Greenwood Park

While I was chatting with Mrs Denise Whitehead, a resident, and may I say an advocate of years in Greenwood Park, in 1986 had worked as the first marketer and manager of this unique place and a proud resident since 2015.

Speaking with such passion and pride, “I just love it here. I wouldn’t

want to live anywhere else” she said. Denise went on to acquaint me with the interesting history of this area, including the concept of the Quail Trail.

Denise explained that the Arboretum Glade has had its first stage of a new drainage system put into place recently. With a multiyear enrichment planting project to introduce a greater range of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers “This will reduce the invasive weeds and increase the bird life making the trail more sustainable” she said. A very happy and proud resident indeed. I’m grateful to have been able to converse with her as I have learned and now able to impart that a difficult concept is achievable with love, dedication, and hard work.

But wait there is more!

Pottery to admire...

...on the walk; Conceived by a group of residents who came up with a eureka moment to create pieces of pottery art to arrange on a cleverly positioned pile of logs. You can admire all this as you amble along this spectacular woodland trail.

Hence, a pile of logs left to rot was transformed into an art piece on the Greenwood Park’s Quail Trail. The Village pottery group, always busy with creative thinking, are visualizing further pieces of pottery to add to the Installation. So, go along and be awed at this spectacular achievement that is The Quail Trail.

A Later Life Journey

Trish McBride became one of Bupa Crofton Downs’ Foundation residents, moving from her home in Broadmeadows, Wellington, in 2022 to a new life in the village. The RVA is delighted that Trish has agreed to allow us to reprint her story here.

I’ve loved this house passionately for 21 years. And here I am choosing to leave it. It started six months ago. I sorted through a couple of boxes of papers (life was lived on paper till the late 90s), then the thought: Anyone would think I was going somewhere. Followed immediately by – ‘Do it now!’ Really? Thinking it through. At almost 80, I am tired of climbing stairs and maintaining a house and garden. Offspring are mostly not geographically accessible and hugely busy. There’s a brand-new retirement village 5k down the road – life needn’t change that much. Isn’t it better to make this decision for myself rather than wait till someone has to make it for me? Sorting my belongings myself,

not leaving it to others. Praying through all this. Discovering close friends are going there too. Eventual ongoing care would be available. The company’s a good philosophical match – no shareholders, an excellent reputation as an employer, sustainable materials and methodology in the build. Signing up.

Then the distilling of my life treasures and memories to fit into half the space I now have. Actively choosing to let things go as part of the spiritual and material preparation for my next life-phase. Wondering deeply about good homes for special things.

Discovering three people from church are going there too, one of whom will be my next-door

neighbour. With the friends, a good basis for a new community. Then the panic about all the things that won’t work for me. The horrible grey carpet – I commented on this to a wise son. His reply: ‘It is a very first-world problem, isn’t it?’ Of course! Don’t cling! The prospect of early morning truck noise from the next-door supermarket. Replace horror with ‘These guys have driven all night so we can have food.’ A real urge to pull out. Prayer for wisdom. The response: ‘That’s where I want you’. Acceptance and peace.

Choosing our own timing was our way – others make their choices differently and must do what’s right for them.

How to Stay Motivated

The Art of Eating When You Live Alone

According to the 2018 census (we’re still waiting for the results of the 2023 census), of all the single households in New Zealand, women in the 65-69 year old bracket make up the greatest proportion (there are almost 25,000 of them). There are almost as many women in the 70–74-year-old age bracket, who live alone. And tens of thousands of older men are in the same situation.

Given one of the ways human beings most often connect, is over food, how can folk who live alone

make their mealtime experiences more sociable and enjoyable? We have some tips to make it happen:

Busy breakfast

Time your breakfast for the most active part of the morning (when workers are heading for the bus, and children are on their way to school), and move your breakfast table to a window where you can see it all happening. Turn on breakfast radio, pop the toast, pour your cuppa, and gaze out at the world while you

crunch on your cereal. After a few days, you’ll come to recognise the same faces. Those same faces may even come to recognise you, and give you a wave!

Lunch with feathered friends

Set up a bird feeding table outside a window where you like to eat lunch. Before you sit down with your midday snack, top up the bird feeder, and enjoy watching your feathered friends fly in for their own lunch. The movement of wings, and the antics the birds get up to, will liven up your lunchtime.

Dinner date at a distance

During the long Covid lockdowns, friendship groups regularly met up on Zoom for pre-dinner drinks and a social catch-up. You can do the same over dinner whenever you want to. Just contact a friend or relative who also lives alone, and arrange to WhatsApp or message each other (use the video connection to make it more ‘live’) while you chat over your respective dinners. Make sure you have a glass of something special to toast each other with. If you want to liven up the dinner date, prearrange to cook the same recipe, and compare the results. Winner gets bragging rights!

Invite a child

Children love to be spoiled, and there’s no better way than to spoil them with your time. If you have a child in your life – whether it’s a grandie or a little neighbour you babysit for at time, plan an early evening meal occasionally, and arrange with their parent for the child to join you, on their own, for a special

dinner. Be sure to check what they do and don’t like to eat, and include a favourite desert!

Pets are company, too

Train your moggy or dog to expect their dinner at the same time as you eat yours. It will bring them into the house at the very time you want their company.

Desert night!

We’re all allowed a treat now and again. Make yours a once-a-week ice-cream desert from a shop within walking distance (a neighbour who lives alone may welcome the opportunity to join you). After you’ve finished your meal, head out the door for the treat. Enjoy chatting to anyone you meet on the way, and be sure to make some conversation with whoever is serving you.

TV dinner

Mindlessly staring at the box, while eating, isn’t a great way to make the most of a meal. But if you have a favourite programme, you look forward to each week, why not plan a delicious meal around it? Prepare the meal ahead of time so you’re not rushed, and keep the TV off until your programme is ready to start. Pour yourself a cuppa or a glass of wine, sit down to watch and eat, and you’ve created a special occasion with little effort.

Shared takeaways

Sharing a weekly meal with a friend is a great way to dine with company, but it can quickly turn into a burden, even if you take turns at cooking. Make your shared meal a take-away, instead, and the problem is solved. Pick up a selection of take-out menus

from local eateries for you and your friend, and schedule a phone conversation earlier in the day to decide what to order. Just because it’s a take-away, you can still make it an occasion by setting the table with a pretty cloth, china plates, and a vase of fresh flowers. Living alone doesn’t always have to mean dining alone. Look for ways to socialise over food, whenever you can.

Building our future with Simplicity

Following last edition’s feature story, Gilbert Peterson chats with Simplicity’s Sam Stubbs on some ambitious plans

spent the last three years investing some of our KiwiSaver and Investment funds in a company that develops and operates long term rental housing, first home mortgage lending and community housing bonds - we’re now ready to scale up,” Sam says.

So what are your growth projections? “Initially we expect this to be a slow burn as the fund attracts money from investors, deploys that into the housing sector areas that we are targeting, and builds up a performance track record. There is generally lots of money on the sidelines in retail deposits, so if the fund can deliver on its objectives and attract even a small share of that deposit base, we think $5-10bn in the next decade wouldn’t be out of the question.

The fund holds 40% in cash assets? “We agreed this with our Supervisor, Public Trust, to hold 40% in cash and equivalent assets to maintain enough liquidity so investors could access their money at any time. We’re not

talking about cash reserves held in a bank account - our cash portfolio’s investment objective is to outperform the Bloomberg NZBank Bill index, and we’re currently achieving that, so expect a decent return, around the 4% per annum range or better, on that portfolio.

What is the main focus of the Home & Income Fund? “The fund focuses on housing investments into 3 areas (in addition to cash and equivalents):

1. Investments in shares of Simplicity Living, a build-to-rent property developer and operator. Simplicity Living builds properties to hold and rent over the long termthis helps to address New Zealand’s serious shortage of quality 1 and 2 bedroom rental homes, and buildto-rent developments are a more tax-effective asset. This investment is particularly relevant for Kiwis in retirement, as they have been renting completed apartments to retired singles and couples with an option for inflation-linked rents, which means their rent doesn’t go up faster than their National Super, and they can be there for the rest of their lives if they want to. Simplicity Living’s rental properties are 100% self-built, owned and operated. They build to own for 100 years, so they don’t cut corners.

2. Investments in first home loans, which provides competitive rates to help our members get into their first home. We all know how

hard it is for kids or grandkids to get into their first home, and this investment will try to help with that.

3. Investment in community housing bonds, which fund community housing providers to develop and provide housing for those most in need.

“We already have about $327 million in the same investments that the Homes and Income Fund will invest in.” (with 1,247 homes completed or in build/development by Simplicity Living , 285 first home loans, and 165 homes funded through community housing bonds.

Who issues community housing bonds, what are they, and how secure are they? “We only buy Community Housing bonds from Community Finance, a non-profit business dedicated to providing funding to Community Housing providers. They create bonds that all fund managers can buy and which are backed by mortgages over community housing.

So why should I put some of my hard earned lifetime savings into Simplicity? “We call ourselves a dignity company. By having more money, you have more choices, and choices give dignity. We believe we can help make a better future for New Zealand by investing in Simplicity Living, low cost 1st home mortgages, and community housing bonds.”

Investors are confronted by hard decisions in these uncertain times. One thing is certain all those living are ageing! The good news for the senior living investment sector, is that according to Statistics New Zealand, the baby boomer demographic is forecast to increase, along with life expectancy.

The industry is New Zealand’s largest supplier of new dwellings. Seniors aged 75+ opting to live in these communities, has almost doubled – up from 8% to 14%, since 2008. Lending creates a flow of interest revenue, which is passed on as quarterly income distributions to investors. Senior Trust is also a PIE which some investors find beneficial.

The Management Team has a long and successful history of providing investors with steady returns and stability of capital.

With the senior living sector as their sole focus, the team has specialist expertise and long-established networks in the sector - having delivered a number of retail offerings spanning twenty years. With a strong, sustainably growing team and a clear focus, they look to continue to build on the opportunities this sector presents, to deliver on behalf of their investors.

Adventure beckons, on a kiwi liveboard

Let’s cut to the chase. What price would you put on an unmissable adventure in a remote New Zealand location? For a once-in-a-lifetime voyage to Fiordland or Rakiura Stewart Island that you will long to repeat and where earlier generations could never hope to venture? The liveaboard ship, MV Flightless, gets you intimately in amongst our southern natural wonders (and, should you want, from your own

cabin porthole!). You explore safe and secure where some sealers and whalers two centuries ago grimly waited years for the return of the ship that left them there.

The Flightless, a sturdy ex Naval vessel operated by Pure Salt (www. puresalt.co.nz), took me south in mid-winter to Rakiura on just such an adventure, in super comfort and with a professional chef onboard serving high end cuisine. Top class

Building our Future

dining on the rear deck; Markos, our Argentinian chef, does such a fine job. The catch from our frequent fishing forays off the bow tops up the ship’s larder.

I ask several of my fellow liveaboard guests what they are seeking from a trip such as this. Same as me turns out an adventure with kayaking, walks in the bush where few people access, where people lived and worked in the past, plus diving, snorkelling, deer hunting… There’s the wonderful wild scenery of course!

With the rear deck glowing in the warmth of a most effective heating system, a voyage mid-winter

Housing is in the Kiwi DNA. And a shortage of homes is at the heart of our housing crisis. So we’ve launched a new Investment Fund targeted towards increasing NZ’s housing supply - where investors can benefit via good risk-adjusted returns, and more Kiwi families can get into a home.

Simplicity Homes & Income Investment Fund

Focused on residential property, the Fund invests in:

• Shares of Simplicity Living, which builds and operates quality homes for long term rent

• Mortgages for first home buyers

• Community housing bonds

• 40% in cash/equivalent investments

There’s no minimum investment term, and you have full access to your money at any time.

Want to make money and do good?

TRAVEL

can easily be as enjoyable as any other time, especially in Fiordland’s sheltered waters. Unlike those huge, impersonal behemoths cruising the world’s oceans, Flightless takes you in close. You make contact literally and personally with the magnificent mountains coastline and where, if not with a party of your own choosing, you may well make new friends amongst the small number of fellow guests on board.

To the big question: would the weather play ball? After a blow through on the first night the wind died to scarcely a breeze above 10 knots for four days. Temperatures as warm as Auckland’s! I’m sure it can get a lot colder but it can do that up north too, even in summer. Weather worries forgotten, we watched the

mollymawks reeling off the stern, wheeling away, arc after arc.

Out on deck, with ample heating to ward off stray cold airs we dine on venison steaks left over from a previous voyage. Then its into the hot tub to soak beneath the stars.

Next day we take the tender to go ashore for a walk on Ocean beach. A couple of sealions asleep in the long grass rise up to express their displeasure at our cameras. But the open sea swell, rumoured to have risen to 11 metres, is no more than your everyday breakers, the wind dead flat. This is a remote place. No one else is around.

Back on board we stop at three likely spots to fish. The mollymawks take a few undersized fish we try to return to the sea, but along with

a couple of small sharks and a barracuda, too soon we have enough blue cod for the evening’s dining.

Next day I wanted to do some snorkelling for paua, and to be truthful, climbing into a thick wetsuit fully loaded with gloves and weights then into and out of the tender can be a mission for an older person like me. But there’s these amazing crew people. Help is what they do. They enjoy getting us suited up and in and out of there.

Besides abundant paua it was such a pleasure lazing above families of giant starfish, the discarded shells of their meals scattered nearby, hovering over colonies of blue lipped mussels. The curl of the giant kelp … the seas here are very alive.

Dinner is again superb with crayfish caught by some of our party cooked in the lightest of batters with more cray legs than enough. Along with potato wedges, a parsnip/bean salad and much, much more.

Next, we explore Price’s Inlet where a Norwegian whaling station flourished for a decade in the 1920’s then head later to where two of our party have booked their hunting permit. They’re after a white tail deer, the species released in these parts as a gift by US President Teddy Roosevelt in 1905. This time there’s no luck with that.

Another tranquil day passes with a walk around Ulva Island, always a must do. Then a kayaking expedition beckons for a leisurely hour before the flight out on the last day to inspect

the local boat fleet and coastline.

Outwardly the 27 metre Flightless looks very functional, a workhorse as you might expect from an ex-Navy coastal patrol vessel. But inside and below deck she’s been extensively refurbished; warm, comfortable and smart as any hotel, and as private as you may wish. A heater in every cabin, with showers most responsive to hot and cold. Everything works precisely.

Chatham

Based in Fiordland, Flightless has full international survey and safety equipment catering for up to 12 guests with a crew of four. Pure Salt take her to Rakiura for about a month each year. She has two tenders, fresh water-makers, ice maker, laundry facilities, ventilation and heating throughout, five bathrooms, a helipad, easy access to the water for the kayaks, dive gear, paddle boards, and fishing. For on board leisure there are

islands

Spring 2024 & Summer 2025 Tours

yoga mats, a library, bean bags, and the hot tub.

Rakiura is easy to get to by plane or ferry. The connection at Invercargill airport can save the cost of an overnight in town plus the cost of the trip to the ferry at Bluff. But passengers on the plane can only take 15kgs of luggage so if you want more than that then maybe you might take the ferry.

Pure Salt advises:

”every adventure for us is as unique as the people onboard - we simply follow the rhythm of sun and tides.”

Escorted small group experiences

Embarking on a journey to explore new destinations is an enriching experience that broadens our horizons and creates lasting memories. When it comes to travel, opting for a small group experience escorted by the very people who designed it, presents a multitude of advantages.

What’s the difference between a ‘tour’ and an experience? We adopted the word ‘experience’ to better reflect the nature of our groups, focusing on unique encounters for our guests, a more leisurely pace and an authentic approach to exploring new places. There’s also a stigma often associated with traditional 'tours', which may be perceived as rigid or impersonal. We feel that ‘experiences’ better conveys our style of adventure, discovery, and personalization.

When it comes to value

for money, our small group experiences are exceptional. By pooling resources and sharing costs, you enjoy economies of scale that are simply unattainable when traveling alone. Travel 2 U group pricing includes airfares, accommodation, transportation, most meals, sightseeing with guides and activities, all bundled together at a competitive price. This means maximizing your budget, and a better experience without breaking the bank.

Comfort and safety is a top priority and small groups provide an added layer of security. With experienced tour leaders, combined with local guides who are intimately familiar with the destination, you can rest assured that you’re in capable hands. Our knowledgeable guides are

well-versed in local customs, language, and potential risks, ensuring a smooth and secure journey. Additionally, traveling in a group minimizes the difficulty of unforeseen challenges, as support is readily available.

One of the most rewarding aspects of small group experiences is the opportunity to forge meaningful connections with fellow travellers. Sharing experiences, exchanging stories, and creating lasting friendships are all part of the journey. The camaraderie that develops within a small group fosters a sense of belonging and enhances the overall travel experience, making every moment more memorable.

We take care of the logistics so you can focus on immersing yourself in the destination. From transportation arrangements to itinerary planning, every detail is meticulously thought through, eliminating the stress of navigating unfamiliar territories, deciphering public transportation, or finding suitable accommodation. You can simply relax and enjoy the journey, knowing that everything has been taken care of.

In our groups, you travel, dine and explore with the very people who put it all together. The value for money, security, inclusions, and camaraderie provided, creates an unparalleled travel experience. Unlock the full potential of your budget, feel secure in the hands of experienced tour leaders, form lasting connections with fellow adventurers, and enjoy a hassle-free journey. Join us on a Travel 2 U personally escorted small group experience and let us guide you through an unforgettable adventure.

Small ship special interest cruises

expected to boom in 2024

From wine tasting on the UNESCO Stari Grad plain, to sunset yoga overlooking Mljet National Park or partying at the iconic Hideout Festival, 2024 is all about doing and learning more on a small ship cruise.

Small ship specialist Sail Croatia saw unprecedented growth across its programme for 2023, particularly for its Hike cruises (up 77%), Navigator party cruises (up 68%) and Cycle cruises (up 30%).

The popularity of these products has led Sail Croatia to introduce two new themed cruises for 2024, the 'Wines of Croatia' itinerary will immerse guests in the burgeoning wine production of the Adriatic, while

a 'Yoga' cruise caters to those seeking a holistic wellness experience.

Grant Seuren, Co-Owner and Managing Director of Sail Croatia commented “Croatia's standing as a top destination continues to attract a multitude of tourists eager to explore the breathtaking Adriatic. Special interest cruises are particularly popular, demonstrating that people want to learn or indulge in a hobby while they are away. Our ‘Wines of Croatia’ cruises proved our most successful new product ever. So much so, that within a matter of days we were adding additional capacity. We are seeing no slow down in demand for these products.”

The company’s ‘Navigator’ party cruises for the under-39 demographic have witnessed a 68% spike in sales throughout 2023, reflecting the popularity of Croatia’s iconic clubbing scene and venues such as Hula Hula, Carpe Diem, and Revelin. Festival Cruises, targeting electronic music enthusiasts with week-long party cruises to the Hideout and Ultra festivals, have further fueled this upward trajectory.

A pivotal aspect of Sail Croatia's forward-looking strategy involves a substantial investment in expanding its fleet of luxury yachts. With a remarkable 58% surge in bookings for their Private Yacht Tour experiences, catering to small groups of families and friends seeking a skippered island-hopping adventure, they have added 3 yachts in 2023, and a further 3 will be available for 2024, including Slice of Heaven, a 55ft super catamaran and Morpheus a 53ft luxury sailing yacht.

Sail Croatia is set to embark on its biggest season to date in 2024, with a new 36-berth cruise ship, Katarina, expanding the fleet to 27 ships.

Combined Probus Club of Paraparaumu Marks Anniversary Milestone

Eighty members of the Combined Probus Club of Paraparaumu gathered at Club Vista on Tuesday, November 21st, to celebrate the club's

In one of several speeches delivered to the anniversary breakfast attendees, Don recounted the club's beginnings in 2003. Recognising the district's significant population

growth, particularly among those over 65, Rotary leaders in Paraparaumu held a public meeting to gauge interest in forming organised clubs for seniors. The response was overwhelming, leading to the creation of two Probus Clubs. Only the Combined Probus Club of Paraparaumu remains active within the Probus network your needs.
