Hello fellow WWL colleagues, I’m Dr Abdul Ashish.

It’s great to be the next guest editor of this Focus magazine. So in case you don’t know, I am a consultant respiratory physician and clinical director for the medicine division at WWL.

My areas of specialisation are Interstitial lung disease (conditions leading to scarring in the lung) and bronchiectasis (condition leading to recurrent lung infections).

I work with a wonderful set of colleagues and specialist nurses, dedicated to providing clinical care of the highest standard. I am also passionate about improving the care and access of new therapies received by patients in Wigan, by collaborating with colleagues and engaging in clinical research.

Recently, I have taken up the post of Respiratory speciality lead for research across Greater Manchester. This position will help me collaborate with scientists and academic colleagues working across GM and the rest of the UK to bring research into Wigan and other trusts across GM, ultimately helping us improve Respiratory care across our region. I work closely with the staff on Ince Ward who care for all aspects of respiratory lung disease, and continue to support them in their journey to reach the Gold ASPIRE accreditation. You can find out more about them in the ‘Meet the Team’ section of this magazine.

My job is immensely satisfying, not just because I can help lots of patients in my day to day role, but I also get to work with some really inspiring nurses and doctors in other departments. I love the social interaction with patients and staff alike and my days at Wigan are filled with lots of laughter alongside the serious stuff that I do. The multitude of roles that I have keeps my job challenging, interesting, busy but a lot of fun too.

Time outside of my work is taken up by my two boys (11 and 8) and ferrying them to their endless activities. I have always loved weight training and contemplated a career in bodybuilding during my teenage years before my parents nipped that thought in the bud. I still try and do some weight training at least twice a week, which really helps to combat stress.

A&E has been exploring the prospect of having a drinking water supply fitted for some time.

Although this issue was initially flagged by A&E, we know there are many other areas within the trust experiencing similar challenges.

We are absolutely committed to ensuring that staff keep hydrated at work whilst adhering to important infection control restrictions which are put in place to keep you and patients of WWL safe and well.

With this in mind, some areas have now been identified for a water fountain to be installed. Note that there will be certain stipulations in place regarding their use, for example, implementing cleaning regimes and using recyclable and disposable cups. Funding for the water fountains is currently being scoped via Charitable Funds.

We acknowledge that we are not perfect, and understand that it is important to discuss what improvements can be made. January - Johanna Howarth During December, our Fundraising manager fell poorly. Johanna took the initiative, taking the lead on the charity fundraising role and ensured that all the organised events and activities took place as organised and to a high standard.

February - Tin Win Who always goes above and beyond, picked up a night shift when the locum did not show up, she never requests payments, refuses even, and will have still attended clinic to see her patients as she has done at least once before in my two years that I am aware of.

March - Astley Ward Night Staff For going above and beyond in providing compassionate care for a current inpatient on Astley ward by ensuring that his wife (an inpatient on another ward) was with him when he passed away.

Help to Save Scheme

The new Help to Save Scheme is a savings account for those who receive certain tax credits. You can save between £1 and £50 per month, but you don’t have to save every month. Then at the end of the 2nd and 4th year, you’re paid a 50% bonus, maximum £1,200.

Don’t worry if you need to access it in-between, you can still make withdrawals if needed and the bonus at the end of the 2nd year is paid in relation to the highest amount you’ve had in the account over the two years, not the amount that’s in there at the end.

What happens after 4 years?

Your Help to Save account will close 4 years after you open it. You will not be able to reopen it or open another Help to Save account. You’ll be able to keep the money from your account.

Teen Zone During the CQC Inspection in November 2017, the Inspectors noted; “Older children did not have access to a dedicated space away from younger children.”

The staff on Rainbow Ward felt very passionately about changing this, but they didn’t want to provide just a space. They wanted to create an area specifically designed for young people so they could relax and chat, whilst also support their treatment and recovery.

And so our quest to develop a ‘Teenzone’ on Rainbow Ward began and still continues.

A huge thank you to everyone that has supported this project so far! You have all done a fantastic job over the past twelve months in helping Three Wishes to achieve this aim.

With your combined effort and that of local businesses, schools, and the general public, we have been able to raise over £14,000 – with more to come! Work on the ‘Teenzone’ will be starting shortly, and we cannot wait to share the progress as it develops.

This Valentine’s Day it was great to see you all ‘wear it red’ to raise funds for Three Wishes – Heart and Lungs Fund.

Giving You all play an important role in providing the best possible care for our patients and community. To help you do this, Albert has provided some top tips on how you can support Three Wishes, and how we can help you to help our patients.

As you may know, Three Wishes Charity is the registered charity of WWL (Registered Charity Number 1048659) and exists solely to improve the care, experience and environment for our patients. The charity is funded by kind donations from the general public and from funds raised by you, our fabulous staff.

How to raise funds

• Choose one of the 11 funds within the charity you want to raise funds for • Chat through your fundraising idea with us, so we can give you all the support and promotion you need • Set up a fundraising page on charity checkout or Justgiving • Get everyone involved and raise as much money as you can • Pay your money (Cash or Cheque) into one of the General Offices or send a cheque to the charity office at Buckingham Row

How to apply for funds from Three Wishes

• Think about areas of your ward / clinic etc. and how they can be improved for the good of your patients • Is there a piece of equipment that would make your service more efficient in treating your patients?

• Discuss this with your colleagues and your manager to check that your idea complies with future plans /developments / procedures etc • Decide which of the 11 funds you will be applying to then download the Charity application form from Wally or contact threewishescharity@wwl.nhs.uk for a copy • Fill the form in, giving as much detail as you can about how your patients will benefit from this, then send your form to the Secretary of the charitable fund you are applying to • Charitable Fund Committees meet every two months to discuss applications • If approved your items will be purchased via the normal procurement procedure • Six months later we will send you a form to fill in so you can tell us all about the wonderful improvements you have made for your patients.

Leadership Focus Company Secretary, Paul Howard, has worked in corporate governance since 2007. Paul joined the Trust in 2017 and took on the role of Data Protection officer in 2018 when the new data protection legislation came into force.

About my role...

People often ask me what a Company Secretary does..

The first thing to say is that you don’t have to be a “company” to have a Company Secretary – the role exists across the majority of sectors and organisations in some form or other. The Company Secretary is a senior role in an organisation which involves ensuring that the organisation is administered and run effectively and efficiently; particularly in relation to compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. I work closely with the Board of Directors, the Council of Governors and various committees and groups to ensure that business is transacted in a timely and effective way. I also line manage a team of people who have responsibility for areas such as patient and public involvement, membership engagement, inclusion and diversity and our army of willing volunteers.

The best part of my role is...

For me, the best part of the role is the diversity of it all; one minute I could be in a meeting where we are discussing a really strategic project and the next moment I could be looking at a specific data protection incident that has taken place or leading on the production of the annual report. The role really allows me to understand the organisation and to see teams at work.

My advice to someone looking to progress to a senior management role would be...

to take the time to understand the organisation that you work for. There is always a wealth of information on the organisation’s website, including minutes of board meetings and information about the organisation’s vision and strategy.

In my spare time...

I enjoy going to the gym or taking the dog for a walk.

Since Christmas I’ve been on a health kick (I won’t call it a diet!) and have lost a couple of stone but there’s a little bit more to go.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

In all honesty, at the moment it is my son - he has just turned three and has discovered early morning get ups! From a professional perspective, knowing that the organisation I work for makes a difference to people helps, and my work with governors and other volunteers in seeing the difference we make to local people makes it really rewarding.

What is your biggest achievement to date?

Personally – becoming a father to my daughter (aged 13) and my son (aged 3). Professionally – I was named Company Secretary of the Year a few years ago and went to a glitzy award ceremony in London.

Guilty pleasures?

I listen to podcasts on my way to work and some of them can be really interesting. My wife and I listen to one that brings Jordan North (the Radio 1 DJ) and William Hanson (etiquette expert) together in a bizarre partnership, giving hilarious yet practical advice on how to handle everyday dilemmas.

We like it that much that we are going to a live showing in Manchester in April.

Also, believe it or not, I’ve just got my first ever Netflix subscription so I have recently binge watched Line of Duty! Any other suggestions gratefully received…

Jili’s Inspiration

Jili Jacob, a Staff Nurse on ASU recently attended one of WWL’s Leadership Masterclasses hosted by Dr Kate Allatt, a stroke survivor who suffered from ‘Locked in Syndrome’. Jili describes how “Kate told a touching story about the experience she had while she lay on a hospital bed in a vegetative state but health professionals were unaware that she could see, hear and feel.” Jili explains how ‘Dr Kate Allatt told the group that what she wanted most during her hospitalisation was health professionals to show compassion, just someone to touch her hand and say you can do it. At the utmost crisis in her life she needed love affection and care, the motivation to do the impossible to get back to normal life.” Jili asked herself ‘Have we ever thought of this simplest of human nature/feelings in our routine work?’ Vowing to take it back to her team Jili has created her own motto to ensure we can continue to provide compassionate care by: • Offering compassionate gestures to patients, families, colleagues.

• Looking after struggling co workers • Random acts of kindness; Kindness means a lot to the bereaved • Understanding that little things make the difference Thanks to Jili for her brilliant insight!

Focus on Your Voice

As a result of feedback, we have taken the opportunity to refresh our Quarterly Staff Survey, the survey will now be known as the ‘Your Voice’ survey. After speaking with staff we heard themes of people not having much confidence in the survey as they don’t often hear what has happened with their feedback. The plan for the refreshed survey will hopefully help in overcoming this as we are committing to address your concerns shortly after every survey has closed, we may not always have the answers to your questions but we will aim to communicate effectively to show that we are listening.

‘Your Voice’ survey is a platform to air your thoughts and be open and honest about your experiences of working at WWL – the good, the bad and the ugly, this helps us to understand exactly how you are feeling. With so many staff in one Trust this is the best way for us to hear from you so if you receive a copy please ensure you fill it in.

We recently hosted listening events across the sites as a result of this survey, so if you attended these you will receive further updates soon.

One of the ways we have listened to your feedback and acted upon, is Service and Value Improvement, or SAVI, which is the Trust’s new and integrated approach to improvement, recognising that when improvements are made to services a number of benefits are generally delivered, which usually relate to both the quality and cost of the service.

Making improvements to the quality of services almost always enables staff and patients time and resources to be used more effectively and vice versa.

Cost and quality improvement are two sides of the same coin, therefore it is not logical to view and approach both as separate things. SAVI brings everything together.

The Trust already has numerous examples of improvements made to services that have delivered a range of benefits: An example of one of the many excellent Quality Champions projects, which aimed to reduce antibiotic usage in the Neonatal Unit, ensuring the Trust was following NICE guidance. Through improving the transportation and reporting process for blood cultures, new born babies had less exposure to unnecessary drugs, whilst at the same time enabling more timely discharges, preventing bed blockages, and reducing the cost of medication.

SAVI – your new single focus for improvement, improving the quality of care we provide for our patients, at a lower cost.

Ed’s gardening tips Edna Frost, Administrator in the Staff Engagement & Development Team has worked for the Trust for over 28 years and has been a keen gardener for the past 20 years. Here, Edna shares some her best kept gardening tips.

As Spring has sprung and we are now moving into Summer with the soil starting to warm up, do you know what plants would be best at this time of year?

Asters are a good choice for later plantings, as they bloom in just 85 days, can be direct sown (don’t need to be planted inside first) and make excellent cut flowers to brighten up your home. Marigolds are also ideal to plant at this time of year.

Do you know the difference between an annual and a perennial plant?

Firstly, an annual plant will last for one year only – meaning you will need to replace them each year. However, a perennial plant will grow back year after year. As British weather is as unpredictable as ever, it’s good to bear in mind that one frosty night would kill an annual plant but not a perennial. Therefore, it’s best to invest in perennials, which are much hardier and long lasting.

My Spring Favourite!

My favourite plant of this season would be Hydrangeas - they grow to quite a large size with a beautiful bloom of stunningly coloured flowers – perfect for bouquets and flower arranging.

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups ice cubes 1 1/2 cups sparkling water 6 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 8 ounces fresh raspberries, frozen Lime wedges (optional) How to Make It: Combine first six ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Serve slushies with lime wedges, if desired.

Ingredients 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup chopped peeled fresh ginger 10 cup diced watermelon 3/4 cup fresh lime juice 4 cups chilled soda water Ice How to make it: Combine sugar, water, and ginger in a small saucepan over high heat. Cook until sugar dissolves, stirring with a whisk. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 15 minutes. Strain; discard solids. Working in batches, place diced watermelon and fresh lime juice in a blender; process until smooth. Strain watermelon mixture through a fine sieve into a pitcher; discard solids. Stir in sugar syrup and chilled club soda. Serve over ice; garnish, if desired.

Slimming World picnic food Ham and Mushroom Muffins

Ingredients •4 large eggs •25ml skimming milk •Ham (lean) any kind •Mushrooms (sliced) •Parmesan •Spinach •Low calorie cooking spray

1.Start by frying the mushrooms in fry light (or a low calorie cooking spray) for around 10 minutes. When they start to brown add the ham (chopped up) and spinach and fry for another 2 minutes (or until the spinach has wilted).

2.In a bowl whisk the eggs and milk adding a little salt and pepper, seasoning to taste (you can also add a little Worcestershire sauce and paprika to add a bit more flavour) 3.Add in the ham, mushroom and spinach, and mix together.

4.Spoon the mixture evenly into the 6 lined muffin cases or tray and sprinkle a bit of parmesan on the top.

5.Cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until slightly risen and golden on 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 5.

Spring cleaning hacks Put the spring back in your dirty keyboards with cotton buds. If certain keys are sticking, or your entire keyboard just doesn’t have the same pop that it used to, chances are dirt and crumbs are the culprits. Sweep cotton swabs between your keys to dislodge dust and grime. Follow it up with one more sweep through your keys, this time using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to kill germs.

Recycle old socks to use as dusting mitts Cotton is a great fabric for trapping dust particles. Try using a (clean) pair of socks as dust mitts and you’ll have more control over where dust goes.
