~Catholic Schools Week a Success~ Catholic Schools Week has been a tradition for as long as many can remember. Over the course of the week there are many different activities that occur. The students get a different dress up theme every day. The favorite day for many was the Casual Day on Friday. Many fun events also occurred over the course of the week. On Monday morning (which was Color Day) Mr. Clemens, a former NFL quarterback and now a parent at our school, came in to talk to the students about the virtue of fortitude and hard work. On Tuesday (Favorite Sports Team Day), the ASB ran a basketball pep rally for the middle school. They recognized the 7th and 8th graders girls’ and boys’ basketball teams coached by Mr. White, the 6th grade boys coached by Mr. Huether and Mr. Hyland, and the 5th/6th grade girls coached by Mrs. Wood. Then the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participated in a bump basketball game that was won by Caden McCollaugh. Wednesday morning both Assumption and DeSales attended an all-school Mass where everyone was asked to wear their “Sunday Best.”. Wednesday night saw an amazingly incredible Talent Show with talents ranging from basketball to jokes to piano, and many others. There was something for everyone to enjoy this year! Liliana Osorio’s favorite part of the talent show was participating in the 4th grade’s play.

On Thursday (Creative Crazy Day) the student government held a bake sale and raised $229.50 for Catholic Charities. Scarlet Clemens said, “this was one of the best parts of the week.” To round out the funfilled week on Friday at 2:00 all the grades gathered in different classrooms to watch movies for the rest of the day. The student government furnished treats for the movie time. Over the course of the week ASB ran a food drive for Catholic Charities. Macy Chvatal, who helped run the food drive, said, “We had so many items brought in this year and it was awesome that we were able to help the community”. All of the baby drive items went to Birthright of Walla Walla while the food and sundries items were donated to the Catholic Charities run Veterans Home at the VA Hospital. There were many memories from the week of fun, charity, and talent. Mrs. Sutlick’s favorite part of the week is the school spirit from the kids. As we put another year of Catholic Schools Week to bed, let us never forget how important our school is to every family at Assumption. A big thank you goes to our teachers, support staff and parents. Overall this year’s Catholic Schools Week was full of fun for everyone! By: Macy C. and Kylie C.

~Teacher Feature~ The Walla Walla Catholic School has an amazing faculty including Mrs. Kuntz and Mrs. Hammond. They dedicate a lot of time and hard work to help us grow. Just as they inspire us, there were people who inspired them. Mrs. Kuntz was inspired by a number of people but, especially by school educators and she loved being around school activities. Mrs. Hammond’s biggest inspiration was her friend in college who worked through a hard time in life. When asked why they wanted to teach at the WWCS

they had a similar answer. Mrs. Hammond was raised Catholic and thinks Catholic Schools give an opportunity to teach Jesus’s principals and incorporate it into the society. Mrs. Kuntz enjoys the K-12 system and how it is faith based. These amazing teachers wanted to be other things growing up too. Mrs. Hammond wanted to be a nurse and even started nursing school until she realized her love for teaching. Mrs. Kuntz always had a part of her that wanted to teach, yet she also wanted to be an

accountant. Mrs. Hammond loves teaching 4th grade. She feels that the kids are just becoming independent and she also loves learning about Washington state’s history. Mrs. Kuntz loves teaching 6th grade because of the wonderful kids in her class. We are so grateful and thankful to have these teachers who help us daily. They have changed and shaped us in many different ways and we should all show our gratitude toward them. Thank you to these two amazing teachers. By: Lauren Williams

~Third Grade Superstars~ In this year’s 3rd grade class we have many special students and an incredible teacher, Mrs. Leahy. Tessa Mendoza says she likes being in 3rd grade because they do multiplication and division. Her favorite subject is math. Mateo Jimenez says he likes 3rd grade because Mrs. Leahy is very nice to them, and his favorite subject is also math. Addison Mason says she likes 3rd grade because they learn geography

so her favorite subject is social studies. When asked, Mrs. Leahy said, “My goals for the 3rd graders are to master math facts in multiplication, their reading fluency, and voice inflection when they read out loud. My most important goal is for my students to be strong in virtue, exceptional in reading, and generous in service.” She likes that her students are hard workers who care about other people and all of God’s

creation. She chose 3rd grade because she loves the topics that they study and the loving hearts of the students. In the spring the 3rd graders will visit Fort Walla Walla and the Public Works Department where they will learn about their community of the past and present. This year’s 3rd grade class is full of special students that will continue to have fun this year with their great teacher. By: Lupita Rodriguez

~100th Day Celebration~

KNIGHTLY

NEWS

Both kindergarteners and first graders celebrated the 100th Day during Catholic Schools Week. Mrs. Williams said, “It is fun for the children to see how large or small 100 can be depending on what item the child brought to school.” The purpose of 100 Days is a culmination of learning about the number 1000 and

moving along the number line. The students go to 100 then start to count backwards back to 0. Kindergartner Luke Michels brought in 100 Cheerios while Max had 100 chocolate chips. Mrs. Acock brought in 100 pieces of beach glass she used to make wind chimes. First graders Isaiah brought in

candy while Zoe had balloons. Some children even drew pictures of what they would look like when they are 100 years old. When asked what her favorite part of the 100th Day Celebration, Mrs. Acock said, “The kindergarteners were TOTALLY quiet for 100 seconds!” Yes, Mrs. Acock, you deserved that silence.

~Biz Town for the 6th Graders~ This spring an exciting opportunity has opened up for the sixth graders where they leave school and go on an adventure to learn how to get and keep a job through a program called JA Biztown. (JA stands for Junior Achievement) Working in this program, sixth graders learn life skills and how to make a living by applying for jobs. It takes the sixth graders months to prepare and in March they will

go to Yakima where there is a pretend city and storefronts that they work at all day in the job for which they applied. The sixth graders interviewed for a dentist clinic, Pacific Power company, Central Washington University, and much more. When asked what they like about JA Biztown, Luke Haider said, “It’s nice and it teaches me how to work in the economy.” Isabella Parker followed that by

saying, “We learn how to safely use money and write checks.” Sarah Auth also said that she thinks that the experience is good and will help you with later life. As the sixth graders go to Yakima, Mrs. Brinson is hoping that they will learn some valuable lessons about life and how to make a living. Good luck sixth graders and have fun in Yakima! By: Sophia Haugen

~Mother/Son and Father/Daughter Fun~ On Sunday, January 26 there was a Mother/Son brunch held at Saint Patrick's church after the 9:30 Mass. The middle school and high school boys could bring their mothers and/or other special women in their life. At the brunch Dr. Mark Haugen gave a speech that many thought was one of the greatest parts of the brunch. They had pancakes and other breakfast food which everyone thought

was the best breakfast ever. 6th grader Manning Filan enjoyed getting his picture taken by Mrs. Sutlick. Daniel Balof, an eighth grader, enjoyed the food the most. Seventh grader, James Didelious liked the inspirational speech. On Saturday February 1 the Father/Daughter bowling event was held at Bowlaway Lanes from 10am-12pm. This was open to all grades and there was quite the

attendance. Everyone had fun bowling against each other and and their fathers. Some thought that the dads had a lot more fun than the daughters, if possible. First grader Sloane’s favorite part was beating her father. Some of the eighth grade girls took great joy in bowling, for their fathers were not paying attention allof the time. What a fun way to spend family time! By: Regina Nel-

~Girls Basketball Bounces By~ Girls’ basketball is just about over! On January 3 middle school A and B teams played their first game against Touchet, and Assumption won. 8th grader Macy Chvatal said, “My favorite part about playing basketball is being a part of the whole team.” Brooke Riney replied, “My favorite part is playing aggressive in the games.” Other middle school girls said their favorite parts of basketball are playing with their teammates, helping out the team, enjoying the experience of the game, and making shots. The 7th/8th grade girls practice

at St. Patrick’s from 3:30 to 5:00 and 6th grade practices at Assumption from 3:30 to 5:00. Coaching the 7th and 8th grade girls is Geoff White while Jenny Wood coaches 6th grade girls These dedicated coaches work very hard to make sure that all learn from our mistakes, get better, and have fun. Coach White said, “We practice how we play.” What he means by that is if the team is slow and lazy at practice then they could play like that by developing bad habits. If they hustle, give all effort, and never give up, it will benefit them well

during the game. This season the teams have grown in skill, patience, and team bonding. 7th grader Lily Haugen said, “My favorite part is the dribbling skills.” Isabella Parker claims that boxing out and being aggressive is something she likes. Annie loves nothing more that to shoot. The season is almost over, so If you are interested in playing basketball next year, don't be afraid to try it out. It is an amazing experience you will love. ~Middle School Happenings~ Recently, the middle schoolers have had many extracurricular activities, including retreats and the eighth grade “Discover DeSales” day. The sixth grade retreat was on January 8th, and was hosted by Fr. Seidel, as were all of the retreats. Wade said that he enjoyed sitting and quietly contemplating in the Church. The seventh grade retreat was on February 5, and Fr. Seidel said that he liked talking to the kids in smaller groups to learn about what the kids thought of their faith. The eighth grade retreat was January 22 after Mass. Macy said, “I learned more about my faith.” On January 23, the eighth graders spent a day learning about DeSales. In the morning, they took a

reading, writing, and math called the PSAT. Lupita Rodriguez said that she liked it because it will prepare her for the test that will decide her career. After that, the eighth graders played a cup-grabbing game in the gym, and then they got to go observe a class of their choice. Some chose drama, some chose Lifetime Sports (P.E.), and the others went to Independent Living. Then they took a tour of the building and asked questions of a panel of juniors. To cap off the day, they played DeSales Jeopardy! and ate ice cream. Kylie liked the tour and the cup grabbing game they played with the ninth graders. These events, and many others, make attending Assumption Middle School such a unique and enjoyable experience. By: Daniel Balof

~Movies For the Family~ While we get closer and closer to spring, there are several good movies that will be coming out soon and will be an enjoyment for the whole family. Two new movies coming out soon in 2020 are Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Onward. Minions: The Rise of Gru is computer animated comedy and a continuation of the 2015 film Minions. It picks up right where it left off where

the minions first meet Young Gru after he freezes a criminal for stealing the queen’s crown. When Gru steals from an elite group of villains, his life is suddenly on the run and he is being hunted by one of the most powerful villain organizations in the world. This movie is a joy for the whole family and all ages. The final movie is Onward, an urban fantasy about two teenage elf brothers as they go on a magical quest to bring their father back. It involves Ian and Barley Lightfoot, and when Ian discovers he

can do magic, he tries to bring his father back. This movie is a new series, the first Disney has made in a while, compared to the sequels and prequels they've been making recently. This is a fun animated movie about family and magic that will keep you on the edge of your seat. By: Carter Green

~Dear Darla~ Comics

Dear Darla, I am having trouble with my homework. What can I do to make it easier to understand? Sincerely, Troubled Student Dear Troubled Student, You could stay after school for a few minutes or go in early to school to ask questions. You can also take notes during class so you can remember things better. Lastly, always ask your teacher or parent if you do not understand something. Love, Darla Dear Darla, I always forget to bring my folder home from school. Then I can’t remember to bring it back to school, if I do bring it home. What should I do to get organized? Sincerely, Wanting to Do Better Dear Wanting to do Better, Some things that may help are to write yourself a reminder on a sticky note and put it where you will see it. Then when you are done with you folder, you could put it directly back in your back pack before you go to bed. Love , Darla
