SHANE LYONS

College athletics certainly faces challenging times as we continue to navigate conference realignment, name image and likeness (NIL) and the transformation of the NCAA and its future as the governing body. With everything that’s going on in college athletics, I must tell you how proud I am of MAJOR HARRIS, SHANE LYONS AND DARRYL TALLEY our student-athletes, coaches and staff. They train, practice, compete and work at a high level and take great pride in wearing the West Virginia wordmark or Flying WV logo. They know how important it is to represent the state’s flagship University, and I thank them for their commitment. In the past year, we opened our new Athletics Performance Center. The renovation of the old Natatorium was made possible with a gift from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Trust and has opened a whole new world for our Olympic Sports teams. Now, all 18 varsity teams have first-class weight rooms, training rooms and locker room facilities. This building is a game changer for our department. I can’t even begin to tell you how far behind we were in facilities for our Olympic Sports, but the new APC has closed the gap. We also have continued to invest in the well-being of our student-athletes. In 2022, we increased our financial commitment to the student-athlete experience through enhanced nutrition, conditioning, academics and mental health. By way of the Alston decision, we also have invested monetary assistance to our student-athletes when certain academic criteria are met. In this annual report, make sure you check out the men’s soccer team and its exciting run to the final eight. Read about volleyball’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and cross country’s impressive third-place finish in the Big 12 and 21st-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Track and cross country star Ceili McCabe is well on her way to becoming one of the best runners in the nation, and the highlight of the year is we added another Hall of Famer. Join me in congratulating men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins on his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. What a great and deserving honor for Coach Huggins. Our department finished the athletic season with 20 All-Americans and 72 AllConference performers. Five teams made the NCAA tournament and another 15 individuals qualified for NCAA championships. In the classroom, we won 41 individual academic honors, produced 321 Academic All-Conference selections and had the highest Academic Progress Rate (APR) in our history. And congrats to football’s Sean Mahone who was a National Football Foundation National Scholar Athlete, and rifle’s Verena Zaisberger and men’s soccer’s Kevin Morris were First-Team Academic All-Americans. All of our accomplishments are detailed in the pages to come but rest assured that our success in competition and in the classroom is a direct reflection of your support for Mountaineer athletics. I again thank you for everything you have done for our department, and none of our success stories would be possible without your contributions to the Mountaineer Athletic Club. I can assure you that your participation with the MAC is making a difference in the lives of our more than 450 Mountaineer student-athletes. In the coming year, I will continue my work on the NCAA Transformation Committee, as we continue to reshape the future of college athletics. I will keep you updated on key developments as they happen along the way. Stay safe and be well. Sincerely,

Shane Lyons Director of Athletics/Associate Vice President West Virginia University

2021-22 ANNUAL REPORT

WVU ACHIEVES RECORD-HIGH APR West Virginia University’s varsity athletic teams have a combined Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 989 according to data released by the NCAA. The 989 score is WVU’s highest score for the 18 years of the NCAA Academic Performance Program WVU’s average APR score of 989 is five points higher than the NCAA’s overall four-year APR average score of 984. WVU’s score has improved four points from two years ago and 15 points from seven years ago.

The APR is based upon eligibility and retention of student-athletes on a semester-by-semester basis and is an assessment of real-time academic success. The results of the fall and spring semesters, in a given year, are calculated as that year’s APR score and averaged with the respective scores from the previous three years to provide a four-year (multi-year) snapshot of academic achievement. Any student-athlete receiving athletic aid in a varsity sport can

earn up to four points per year for being academically eligible and remaining enrolled in the institution. A team’s APR is the total points earned on the roster divided by that squad’s total possible points, multiplied by 1,000. Teams must achieve a 930 multiyear APR to avoid immediate penalties (involving the possible reduction of practice time and access to postseason competition). Those elements of the NCAA Division I APR remain suspended through spring 2023. The current multi-year APR scores for WVU’s varsity teams (2017-18 to 202021): baseball 973; men’s basketball 990; women’s basketball 991; cross country 996; football 974; golf 993; gymnastics WVUAthletics

995; rifle 1,000; rowing 996; men’s soccer 992; women’s soccer 988; men’s swimming and diving 990; women’s swimming and diving 993; tennis 991; track and field 993; volleyball 994; and wrestling 964. “We are proud of the high level of academic success with our studentathletes, and our scores continue to climb and be well above the national average,” Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. “This record-high 989 score for West Virginia University is a testament to our student-athletes, our coaching staffs and our academic student-athlete development unit. I would like to congratulate the rifle team for its perfect four-year score.” @WVUSports

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

OLYMPIC SPORTS ATHLETICS PERFORMANCE CENTER OPENS A critical component to the success of West Virginia University’s Olympic sports student-athletes is now fully functional and operational. The $10 million Athletics Performance Center, made possible through a gift from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust, is a 36,000+-square-foot sports performance center that is being utilized on a daily basis by the vast majority of WVU student-athletes. With the exception of football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball, which have their own training areas, between 300 and 400 student-athletes are now taking advantage of this facility every day. The new center was built in the old WVU Natatorium, which was utilized by West Virginia University’s swimming and diving teams from 1975 until November 2019, when the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park officially opened. Roughly 1,850 cubic yards of concrete, requiring 185 concrete trucks, were needed to fill it in. The convoy of trucks lined up to pour the fill was an impressive site to behold. Great care was taken to preserve as much of the original structure as possible, including the Natatorium’s iconic wooden ceiling. All that was needed was a light pressure wash to restore its original finish. Lyons said it was important for the performance center to be within close proximity of the training table and academic support center in the Coliseum. Some of the facility’s specifics: • 36,500 square feet of training space, including an additional mezzanine area with 6,500 square feet of room for ERG (ergometer) training for the rowing team where the diving well was once located, and a cardiovascular area in the former seating area • 1,400 square feet of glass in the front to provide natural lighting • 9,000 square feet for the sports medicine staff, including a 1,500-square foot hydrotherapy area and a $50,000 BOD POD body composition tracking system to measure body-fat percentages SHANE LYONS

• 2,800 square feet of additional men’s and women’s locker room areas for student-athletes • Indoor golf training facility with Trackman technology and putting greens

• 1,200 square feet nutrition area and fueling station with a fully functional kitchen This is the culmination of more than five years of planning, going back to when Lyons first toured the campus when he was considering the athletics director post in January, 2015. “When I came on as athletic director, one of my main focuses was upgrading our facilities, especially for Olympic sports, which I felt were very below par in terms of the strength and conditioning and medical areas,” Lyons said. “We had teams that never had their own locker room space in its entire history. When we re-did this building, it was important to look at which teams didn’t have locker rooms and address that.” Previously, WVU’s Olympic sports teams either had to use the antiquated weight and training room located in a small space between the

Natatorium and the Shell Building, the small Coliseum weight room located courtside, or reserve time over at Milan Puskar Stadium or in the Basketball Practice Facility. Obviously, it was a less-than ideal situation and Olympic sports coaches either showed recruits the Milan Puskar Center or Basketball Practice facilities, or skipped over the weight room entirely. “In all of our projects, we are looking at effectiveness and efficiency for our student-athletes,” Lyons concluded. This new Athletics Performance Center certainly accomplishes that, and much, much more. The architectural firm used for this project was Omni Architects of Fairmont, and the general contractor and construction manager was March Westin of Morgantown.

D E Z LI TA R O M IM Y E LL TA D N A IS HARR WITH NUMBER RETIREMENTS West Virginia University football legends Major Harris and Darryl Talley joined the pantheon of Mountaineer football greats this past fall with the retirement of their numbers, becoming just the fourth and fifth Mountaineer gridders (No. 75 Sam Huff, No. 21 Ira Errett Rodgers and No. 77 Bruce Bosley) to be so honored.

14

Talley, who wore No. 90, was a four-year starter who culminated his career with consensus All-America honors in 1982. That was just part of a magnificent career for the East Cleveland, Ohio, native who had five tackles for loss against Penn State in 1980, was Sports Illustrated’s National Player of the Week after a win against

Boston College in 1982 and finished his career as WVU’s career tackles leader with 484 (282 solo) with 35 tackles for loss, 19 sacks, five interceptions and five fumble recoveries. More importantly though, he was a big part of the foundation on which Don Nehlen rebuilt the Mountaineer football program. The Buffalo Bills drafted him in the second round of the 1983 NFL Draft, and he blossomed into a star for the Bills, playing 12 seasons as the team’s starting outside linebacker from 198394, never missing a game and starting in four straight Super Bowls. At the conclusion of his career, Talley was the Bills’ all-time leading tackler with 1,137. He also recorded 38½ sacks, 12 interceptions, 14 fumble recoveries and three touchdowns for his career as a Bill, averaging 120 tackles, 3½ sacks and 6.2 takeaways per season. Aside from the Super Bowls, he was selected twice to the Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro in 1990 and 1991. He concluded his career by playing one season each with the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings to total 14 years in the NFL. Talley’s overall career honors are vast. He is a member of WVU’s All-

Time Football Team, was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, won the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Distinguished Service Award in 2000, which is named after the Bills’ legendary owner, became the 20th member of the Buffalo Bills’ Wall of Fame, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011, the Mountaineer Legends Society in 2016 and named one of the 26 greatest players in Buffalo Bills history as part of the team’s 50th Anniversary, joining teammates Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, Cornelius Bennett and Andre Reed among others. Harris, a native of Pittsburgh, wore No. 9 for three of the most exciting seasons in school history. His wrongway touchdown run that served as a catalyst in a 51-30 beating of Penn State in 1988 was THE highlight in a career full of them from 1987-89. The trailblazing Harris was one of college football’s most exciting performers in the late 1980s, but not only was he a remarkable athlete with futuristic skills on the football field, he also possessed an effervescent and magnetic personality off it, and he arrived at the same time ESPN was transforming college football into one

of America’s most popular sports. It could easily be said that his style of play was ahead of its time and paved the way for future quarterbacks such as Michael Vick, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and many stars of today to shine in the NFL. How popular was Major? Consider this: the ONLY two seasons West Virginia football has ever averaged more than 60,000 fans per game occurred during Major’s sophomore and junior seasons in 1988 and 1989. And five of the 17 largest crowds in Mountaineer Field history still involve games in which Harris played. Arriving in Morgantown at a time when West Virginia was coming off two straight seasons without going to a bowl game, Harris ignited a flame in the Mountaineer grid program that led to the doorstep of a national championship and turned the Mountaineers from a regional football program into a national one after the first unbeaten, untied regular season in school history (1988). He had a pair of top-five Heisman Trophy finishes (5th in 1988 and 3rd in 1989), became the first quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards and pass for 5,000, received write-in votes for governor of the state of West Virginia (1988), was a First Team Kodak AllAmerican (1989) and two-time ECAC Player of the Year (1988 and ’89), was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame (1999), the College Football Hall of Fame (2010) and Mountaineer Legends Society (2016).
