2024-25 West Virginia University Intercollegiate Athletics Annual Report

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM

WREN BAKER

It is with great honor that I present Mountaineer fans all over the world with this 2024-25 annual report. Our department turned in a great year, and I am so proud of the effort.

Our student-athletes love to wear the West Virginia name on their uniform. They know they represent the entire state and trust me, they do not take it lightly. These annual reports serve as a historical tool that documents the yearly results of our athletic programs and the accomplishments of our student-athletes.

We finished No. 42 in the final Director’s Cup standings, which is our fifthbest finish ever and our highest mark since 2011. In the Big 12 Conference, our Director’s Cup standing was sixth out of the 16 teams.

Rifle won the nation’s leading 20th national championship in the sport and congratulations to coach Jon Hammond on bringing back home the national championship trophy where it belongs. First-year baseball head coach Steve Sabins had a nice debut. Not only did he set the program’s record for wins in a season but led the Mountaineers to a second straight NCAA Super Regional Appearance.

And don’t forget our women’s track and cross country programs under coach Sean Cleary. The No. 2 national finish in cross country was followed by a No. 9 finish in track. Coach Mark Kellogg put together another 25-win season in year two and again had his program challenging for the top spot in the Big 12. Overall, seven teams participated in NCAA tournament play and another 13 student-athletes qualified for individual NCAA participation.

Yes, we did have head coaching changes in our football and men’s basketball programs. Rich Rodriguez is determined to bring his alma mater back to its winning ways in his second stint as head coach, and I have great confidence that Ross Hodge is the perfect leader for our men’s basketball team.

Individually, two NCAA individual titles were won and 22 student-athletes received All-American honors. Another 72 received all-conference selections and 13 were crowned Big 12 champions.

On the academic side, our department continues to excel with a 989 APR – well above the national average. More than 120 athletes received academic All-Conference accolades, and 10 were named academic All-Americans.

It’s also important to note that our department turned in its highest cumulative GPA ever among our 18 varsity sports at 3.37, marking our 14th straight year with an overall department GPA greater than 3.0. More that 400 student-athletes made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and 144 graduated from WVU. Our graduation rate stands at 96%, giving us nothing but success on the academic side.

Overall, it was a great year and there is more growth and improvement to come. We are committed to full revenue share that’s permissible by the NCAA under the House settlement. Also, the newly formed Gold & Blue Enterprises will be a valuable asset for future athlete NIL opportunities. I don’t know of any other way to put it other than 2024-25 was a successful year allaround, and there is a lot to be excited about when it comes to West Virginia University Athletics.

All this information and much more will be highlighted in the upcoming pages of this 2024-25 Annual Report. There is a lot of new and positive energy in our department, and this year needs to serve as a springboard for athletic and academic success for years to come.

Let’s Go!

WVU ATHELTICS POSTS OUTSTANDING 2024-25

Rifle’s NCAA-record 20th national championship and Ceili McCabe’s national title in the indoor 3,000 meters highlighted another outstanding year for Mountaineer athletics.

College rifle’s winningest program, led by coach Jon Hammond, rallied on the second day of competition to defeat Kentucky by one point to end its eight-year title drought. Hammond has also led WVU to national championships in 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Team members Gavin Barnick, Ashlyn Blake, Camryn Camp, Griffin Lake, Natalie Perrin and Lauri Syrja earned All-America honors.

On the strength of its rifle title, Wren Baker’s athletics department finished 42nd in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings released last week, which marks the fifth-best finish in school history and its highest since placing 40th in 2010-11.

This year also represents the ninth time the Mountaineers have finished in the top 50 since the Directors’ Cup was established in 1994. There were 303 schools listed in the 2025 standings.

Rifle was one of seven West Virginia University teams to qualify for NCAA championships during the 2024-25 academic year.

Women’s cross country was a mere 17 team points shy of capturing its first-ever national title at the 2024 NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisconsin. McCabe (sixth), freshman Joy Naukot (17th) and senior Sarah Tait (34th) earned All-America honors in the process.

Two weeks prior, McCabe established a Penn State Blue and

White course record with a winning time of 19:11.2 to help coach Sean Cleary’s Mountaineers claim their third regional title and their first since 2008.

The success continued on the track as the Mountaineers earned top-25 finishes in the indoor and outdoor meets. Naukot (third in 10,000-meter run) and Tait (fourth

in the 3,000-meter steeplechase) helped WVU to 24th-place at the outdoor nationals in Eugene, Oregon, following the team’s 23rdplace finish at indoor nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia. That came on on the strength of McCabe’s title - just the fourth in school history and first at 3,000 meters, which also marked her 10th All-America honor during her illustrious career.

Overall, WVU was ninth in the Program of the Year Awards from the US Track and Field Coaches Association.

First-year West Virginia University baseball coach Steve Sabins continued the success retiring coach Randy Mazey enjoyed in 2024 when he led the Mountaineers to the program’s first-ever NCAA Super Regional appearance.

This season, Sabins, the 2025 ABCA East Regional Coach of the Year guided WVU to a school-record 44 victories, the program’s first outright conference regular season title and a return to the Super Regionals where it fell to eventual national champion LSU.

West Virginia cracked the national rankings in early March and got to as high as No. 13 in the USA Today coaches’ poll before ending the season ranked 17th –marking the first time in 61 years

NATIONAL CHAMPION
CEILI MCCABE

that WVU baseball has completed back-to-back seasons in the national rankings.

Speaking of polls, men’s soccer achieved a program milestone when it reached No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll on Sept. 3, 2024. WVU remained there the following week, returned on Oct. 15, and finished the season ranked 16th.

Coach Dan Stratford led the Mountaineers to Sun Belt Conference regular and postseason titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round before falling at Virginia. Max Broughton and Sergio Ors Navarro capped off great seasons by earning AllAmerica accolades.

Women’s soccer, too, qualified for the NCAA Tournament after placing third in the Big 12 with an 8-2-1 conference mark. The Mountaineers finished 12-5-3 overall and made their 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance since 2000 under veteran coach Nikki Izzo-Brown’s leadership.

Women’s basketball spent the entire season in the national rankings and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season under coach Mark Kellogg, who owns a stellar 50-16 record at WVU. Led by honorable mention AllAmerican guard JJ Quinerly, West

Virginia once again won 25 games and saw its season end on the home floor of a higher-seeded opponent in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Men’s basketball, with 19 regular-season victories and a .500 record in Big 12 Conference play, was snubbed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee

despite having strong postseason credentials. Based on its victories over Gonzaga, Kansas and Iowa State, bracketologists had rated West Virginia’s tournament resume much better than some of the teams that made the field of 68, and its exclusion sparked great controversy. The snubbing overshadowed a great season put forth by AllBig 12 guard Javon Small, who averaged 18.6 points, 5.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Mountaineers.

Wrestling, led by veteran coach Tim Flynn, had five competitors qualify for NCAAs, including 165-pound All-American Peyton Hall, whose third-place finish helped the Mountaineers end the championships 18th overall. Hall, who tied the program’s all-time wins record while earning his third All-America honor, and 125-pounder Jett Strickenberger, also claimed Big 12 individual titles.

CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICAN WYATT MILUM

WVU’s 10-7 dual match record was good enough to place 23rd in the final Wrestle Stat rankings and marked the first time since 1990-91 it has had consecutive double-digitwin seasons.

Women’s gymnastics, led by senior Anna Leigh, made its 44th NCAA Regional appearance in school history by competing in the Pennsylvania Regional. It was veteran coach Jason Butts’ 11th regional appearance at the helm. Leigh and freshmen Sophia Rice and Karleigh DiCello individually qualified for regionals as well.

Mountaineer football made its fourth bowl appearance in the last five seasons and 41st overall in 2024. Offensive tackle Wyatt Milum became the school’s 14th consensus

Team honors for their performances at the 2025 Big 12 Championships held in Federal Way, Washington.

Women’s tennis, under veteran coach Miha Lisac, produced a pair of conference victories as did volleyball coach Jen Greeny, in her first season rebuilding the Mountaineer program.

recruiting efforts for 2025 include signing outstanding four-star prospect Sarah Pfiffner from Frisco, Texas.

All-American and was taken in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

WVU produced its sixth winning campaign in Big 12 play since joining the conference in 2012.

In golf, Kaleb Wilson became the second NCAA individual qualifier in program history and coach Sean Covich’s Mountaineers earned a top-five finish at this year’s National Invitational.

Owen Recker was the first male diver since 2022 to qualify for the NCAA Championships, highlighting coach Brent MacDonald’s first season at the helm of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

Additionally, Danny Berlitz and Justin Heimes earned All-Big 12 First

Greeny enjoyed great success at Washington State where she led the Cougars to three straight 20-win seasons, including a 26-8 record in 2023, which was one of six times her teams finished ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll. Greeny’s

And women’s rowing, overseen by veteran coach Jimmy King, saw 10 of its athletes named to the 2025 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Team and has consistently ranked among the most active programs for community service in the country on Helper Helper.

The rowers have won WVU’s Community Service Award for athletics during the past three years.

JERRY WEST’S FAMOUS NO. 44 RETIRED FROM ALL WVU ATHLETIC COMPETITION

As an everlasting tribute to Jerry West, the greatest Mountaineer ever, the No. 44, will be retired by the Athletics Department in all sports.

Previously, the famous number was retired in men’s basketball only. After a special vote and subsequent approval by the WVU Athletics Council, director of athletics and vice president Wren Baker has now retired the No. 44 in perpetuity for all WVU sports. In honor of West’s memory and legacy, no Mountaineer studentathlete will ever wear No. 44 again.

“Through his generosity, advice, time and overall encouragement, Jerry West has always given back to our University and our studentathletes,” Baker said. “He never sought the recognition, but all our student-athletes have benefited from his love for his home state and University.

“His legacy will continue to touch and enhance the lives of our student-athletes through

scholarships, our academic center in the Coliseum and his overall vision to compete and represent the West Virginia jersey with pride,” Baker added. “He was proud of his alma mater, and No. 44 will always stand for excellence here at WVU. There will never be another Jerry West.” His life accomplishments are endless. Sixty-five years after his three-year Mountaineer career ended, West still holds 17 school records, including rebounding and scoring. He is the only person in history to ever be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame for three separate categories. During his career, he won an Olympic Gold Medal, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019 and beside being perhaps the greatest executive in NBA history, West is well-known as the famous Logo of the NBA.

All 18 varsity sports paid homage to West’s memory this season by wearing a No. 44 commemorative patch on their game-day attire. Any student-

athlete currently wearing the No. 44 will be allowed to finish his or her career with the number, but upon their eligibility completion, the number will be retired in that sport.

West Virginia athletics paid tribute to West’s memory on Jan. 18 in a special Jerry West Day at the Coliseum for the men’s basketball game against Iowa State. The Mountaineers wore

throwback uniforms that were replicas of the one West wore when he played, and members of West’s family were in attendance for a pregame reception hosted by the Mountaineer Athletic Club before a special halftime ceremony honored him before a sellout crowd. The Mountaineers punctuated the celebration by knocking off the second-ranked Cyclones 64-57.

Additionally, Steve and Connie Ballmer, owners of the Los Angeles Clippers, presented the WVU Foundation with a $5 million gift in West’s name. Half of the Ballmer gift establishes a new fund in West’s name to support completion grants, which provide monetary assistance for WVU students at risk of leaving the University due to financial challenges. The goal is

to encourage students to remain in school and complete their degrees. The remaining funds will bolster the Jerry West Scholarship, which goes to undergraduate students from West Virginia with demonstrated financial need. First awarded in 1971, the scholarship has enabled generations of Mountain State natives to graduate from WVU.

WVU ATHLETICS LAUNCHES GOLD AND BLUE ENTERPRISES

The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has launched Gold & Blue Enterprises, an initiative designed to revolutionize the student-athlete experience and enhance the Mountaineers’ competitive edge in the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.

Gold & Blue Enterprises will play a central role in advancing the mission of WVU Athletics by focusing on strategic initiatives that drive success in competition and in the evolving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) landscape. By serving as a key partner in the development of a comprehensive, innovative and sustainable NIL and revenue-generating ecosystem, Gold & Blue Enterprises will support Mountaineer studentathletes and position WVU as a national leader in the future of collegiate athletics.

Don Robinson, a successful 25-year veteran of the financial industry, has been named as the first chief executive officer of GBE Robinson comes to West

Virginia Athletics from MVB Financial Corp., where he had served as its president since 2022. Joining MVB in 2011, he played a pivotal role in transforming the institution from a $350 million bank in North Central West Virginia to a $3 billion bank with nationwide operations.

A native of Moundsville, West Virginia, Robinson has lived and worked throughout his home state. However, he began his career as an audit manager with Arthur Andersen in Washington, D.C. and later became a partner at the accounting firm of Toothman Rice overseeing audits. Transitioning to the banking industry, he served as a commercial regional manager for Huntington Bank’s West Virginia region before joining MVB.

Before being appointed president in 2022, Robinson previously served as executive vice president, chief financial officer and corporate development officer for MVB Financial and MVB Bank. He also led MVB’s

listing on Nasdaq, marking the first for a West Virginia bank in 18 years. In growing MVB, he oversaw more than 15 mergers and acquisitions throughout his tenure to strengthen the corporation’s place in the financial industry.

Robinson, his wife, Carrie, and their children, reside in Morgantown, where he is active in the community, along with being a strong proponent of local youth sports organizations and tournaments.

Gold & Blue Enterprises will operate with two primary priorities: to generate new and diversified revenue streams that fuel the continued success of WVU Athletics, and to harness the strength and visibility of the WVU brand to elevate the personal and professional opportunities available to Mountaineer studentathletes.

“The launch of Gold & Blue Enterprises is a major breakthrough for WVU Athletics and its student-athletes. We are taking a hands-on approach to maximize Name, Image and Likeness opportunities for our students and develop innovative partnerships to generate the revenues we need to thrive,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “I want to thank everyone involved with helping to create and launch this proactive business venture that will work to keep WVU relevant and winning

on the national stage. In today’s competitive NIL industry, the launch of GBE is a victory for all Mountaineers.”

Key Features of Gold & Blue Enterprises:

• Comprehensive NIL Support: Offering a full suite of services, including education, compliance guidance and personalized brand development to support studentathletes in maximizing their NIL opportunities.

• Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with leading marketing and advertising agencies to connect studentathletes with corporate partners, facilitating meaningful endorsement opportunities and brand alignments.

• Innovative Business Structure: Operating with a private-sector approach, Gold & Blue Enterprises integrates sales, media, marketing and business operations to drive revenue and support the long-term sustainability of WVU Athletics.

• Leadership and Governance: A dedicated leadership team will oversee Gold & Blue Enterprises, ensuring alignment with WVU’s mission and values while fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

Gold & Blue Enterprises draws inspiration from successful models at peer institutions, adapting best practices to meet the unique needs of WVU student-athletes and the broader Mountaineer community. This initiative underscores WVU’s proactive approach to the changing collegiate athletics landscape,

emphasizing the importance of adaptability, strategic planning and student-athlete empowerment.

WVU APR TOPS NCAA AVERAGE

West Virginia University’s varsity athletic teams have a combined Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 989 according to data released by the NCAA.

WVU’s average APR score of 989 is five points higher than the NCAA’s overall four-year APR average score of 984.

“I would like to congratulate the rifle, cross country and track & field teams for their perfect four-year scores,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “Our teams continue to excel in the classroom and in competition, and we are all proud of the high level of academic success with our student-athletes and their commitment to West Virginia University.”

The APR is based upon eligibility and retention of student-athletes on a semester-by-semester basis and is an assessment of real-time academic success. The results of the fall and spring semesters, in a given year, are calculated as that year’s APR score and averaged with the respective scores from the previous three years to provide a four-

year (multi-year) snapshot of academic achievement.

Any student-athlete receiving athletic aid in a varsity sport can earn up to four points per year for being academically eligible and remaining enrolled in the institution. A team’s APR is the total points earned on the roster divided by that squad’s total possible points, multiplied by 1,000.

Teams must achieve a 930 multi-year APR to avoid immediate penalties (involving the possible reduction of practice time and access to postseason competition).

The current multi-year APR scores for WVU’s varsity teams (2020-21 to 2023-24): baseball 976; men’s basketball 988; women’s basketball 973; cross country 1,000; football 980; golf 993; gymnastics 995; rifle 1,000; rowing 990; men’s soccer 982; women’s soccer 991; men’s swimming and diving 998; women’s swimming and diving 998; tennis 965; track and field 1,000; volleyball 994; and wrestling 993.

NEW COACHES HIRED IN FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

For the first time in nearly 65 years, West Virginia University will be beginning a season with new coaches in football and men’s basketball at the same time. Not since George King and Gene Corum patroled the sidelines in Morgantown have the Mountaineers had new head coaches in those two sports in the same season.

A name familar to Mountaineer fans is making his return to lead the West Virginia football program.

Rich Rodriguez, a former Mountaineer player (1982-84) and head coach (2001-07), winner of 190 career games and 12 outright or shared conference or division championships, returned to WVU on Dec. 13, 2024 at press conference aired live on “The Pat McAfee Show,” a popular sports talk show on ESPN and YouTube hosted by his former kicker and punter Pat McAfee.

During his first tenure in Morgantown, Rodriguez was 60-26, won the Big East Conference championship four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007) and was the Big East’s Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2005. The Mountaineers also won the 2006 Sugar Bowl and the 2008 Fiesta Bowls.

All told, Rodriguez has guided six different schools during his head coaching tenure, He has earned conference or national coach of the year honors seven times (WVIAC 1993, 1994; Big East 2003, 2005; Pac-12 2014; C-USA 2024 and NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1993). He has led his squads to eight or more wins 15 times, 10 or more wins five times and has won the conference or division championship seven times (Glenville State 1993-96, West Virginia 2003-05, ‘07, Arizona 2014, Jacksonville State 2022, ‘24).

He has led his programs to 14 bowl games, including three BCS games (2006 Sugar, 2008 Fiesta, 2014 Fiesta) and two NAIA Division I playoff appearances (the championship game in 1993 and the quarterfinals in 1994). He has coached offenses that have produced 10 conference players of the year, has coached 56 NFL players and more than 30 All-Americans during his career.

RICH RODRIGUEZ

“I have thought about this moment,” Rodriguez said. “I get to coach at the greatest University in the country. I get to live in the greatest state in the union. And more importantly, I get to be around the greatest people that you can be around. Thank you very much.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Rich Rodriguez and his family back home,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “Coach Rodriguez understands what it takes to win at West Virginia, and I believe he will pour his heart, soul and every ounce of his energy into our program. I am convinced Coach Rodriguez wants what is best for West Virginia, WVU and West Virginia football, and I am excited about the future of our program.”

On the baskeytball side, Baker tapped his North Texas roots in naming Ross Hodge as WVU’s latest men’s basktball coach.

Hodge, 44, spent the last eight seasons at North Texas, including the last two as head coach, posting a 46-24 (.657) record.

“Ross Hodge is a proven winner and leader who has demonstrated success at every stop of his career,” Baker said. “His teams play with toughness and grit and Mountaineer Nation will love the passion his players have for the game.

Overall, Hodge has compiled a record of 192-48 (.800) in seven seasons as a head coach.

Considered one of the country’s defenisve masterminds, Hodge led the Mean Green to 27 wins this past season and the NIT semifinals. The 27 wins were the second-most in

school history and his 46 wins in two seasons were the most by a UNT coach in his first two seasons.

In his six seasons at UNT prior to being named head coach, Hodge served as the associate head coach under current Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland. Hodge helped lead the Mean Green to a 13565 record, and North Texas won the 2020 Conference USA regular season championship, 2021 CUSA Tournament championship and 2022 CUSA regular season title.

UNT is just one of six schools in the country to have won a national postseason game in each of the last five years, joining Baylor, Creighton, Gonzaga, Houston and Oregon.

Prior to North Texas, Hodge served as the associate head coach under McCasland at Arkansas State for the 2016-17 season. Prior to Arkansas State, Hodge spent four seasons with Larry Eustachy at Colorado State. He joined the Division I coaching ranks when he was hired by Eustachy as an assistant at Southern Miss in 2011-12 season.

From 2006-11, Hodge was one of the nation’s top junior college head coaches, compiling a 146-24 (.858) overall record with stops at Paris Junior College and Midland College.

“It is with great honor and humility that I accept the head men’s basketball coaching position at West Virginia University,” Hodge said. “I have such respect for the toughness, grit and pride of the people of West Virginia, and my hope is that we can reflect that with how our team competes on the court.”
