DISCOVER STATE MISSION

West Virginia State University will meet the higher education and economic development needs of the state and region through innovative teaching and applied research. HISTORY

West Virginia State University was founded in 1891 as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) that currently enrolls more than 3,800 students. We are a public, fouryear, land-grant research institution, located in Institute, West Virginia, just west of the capital city of Charleston. Our student population is richly diverse in ethnicity, geography, residential/ commuter, traditional and adult learners.

NOTABLE ALUMNI

Doctors, lawyers, generals, actors, writers, scientists - so many WVSU alums have gone on to greatness. Among our most notable graduates are Katherine Johnson, whose extraordinary work at NASA helped the United States win the “space race” and became the basis of the book and Academy Award-nominated film “Hidden Figures;” Earl Lloyd, the first African-American to play in the NBA; noted Broadway and television actor Lou Myers who is best known for his role as Mr. Gaines in “A Different World;” and the Rev. Leon Sullivan, author of “The Sullivan Principles,” that helped bring an end to Apartheid in South Africa.

ARMY ROTC

The WVSU Yellow Jacket Battalion has commissioned more than 900 officers into the U.S. Army. WVSU’s Yellow Jacket Battalion has produced a Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, 15 Generals and over 100 Lieutenant Colonels.

LOCATION

WVSU is located in Institute, West Virginia, just a few miles from Charleston, the largest city and the state capital. Our main campus is located off Interstate 64 and within easy driving distance from major cities in five bordering states to include Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

SIZE

WVSU’s 3,800 students enjoy a 14:1 studentfaculty ratio. Our students learn in a challenging, nurturing, and safe environment, which allows them to engage with new people, perspectives and ideas.


ACADEMICS

We offer 23 undergraduate degrees, 7 graduate degrees and 6 fully online degrees in our four academic colleges.

STUDENT LIFE AND ENGAGEMENT

WVSU offers over 50 student organizations, including honor societies, Greek organizations, marching band, concert choir, jazz ensemble, dance team, religious and political groups, and more.

ACCREDITATION

WVSU holds the longest continuous accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) of public colleges in West Virginia and is among the top 10 percent in the world. The Bachelor of Science in Education is nationally accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), formerly NCATE. The Bachelor of Science in Social Work is nationally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program, including the management and accounting concentrations, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).


EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING HONORS PROGRAM

The Honors Program offers enriched academic opportunities for students with high academic achievements through academic challenges that enhance their skills and as they continue their pursuit of excellence.

RESEARCH ROOKIES

Research is an important part of the undergraduate experience. Students engage in enriching research experiences that allow them to explore their intended majors, develop relationships with faculty in their field and cultivate critical thinking skills. Students admitted to the Research Rookies program will be paired with a faculty member in their field of interest for an innovative, hands-on experience.

ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

Internship Programs provide students with opportunities to integrate academic theories and principles with practical learning in professional, real-world environments in order to enhance their personal development and understanding of their local and global issues and opportunities. This will enable students to contribute and develop solutions to complex problems in their academic fields. The program gives employers the opportunity to assist and participate in student development, add to their workforce with emerging talent and enhance their long-range recruiting efforts. Internships are coordinated through academic departments in each of the University’s four colleges.

Living on campus is a great way to enhance your experience at WVSU, and our Office of Housing and Residence Life is eager to serve and engage our residential students. Living on campus allows you to build life long memories and friendships. We offer a number of amenities, including traditionally styled living units and modern, state-of-the-art facilities, study halls, a game room, laundry facilities, cable and Internet hook-ups and a cafĂŠ. ATHLETICS

Get ready to experience the Yellow Jacket Nation! WVSU is a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and fields conference championship teams in several sports. Our women’s tennis team is a dynasty within the conference regularly winning the regular season and conference tournament titles. In 2018 and 2019, the team reached the NCAA Division II sweet 16 as one of the premiere programs in the country. Likewise, the Yellow Jackets softball team is a regular contender for the conference title, and

was the 2018 MEC tournament champion. The Yellow Jackets baseball team has a long history of being one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II and has won several conference championships through the years. In 2017 and 2018, our football team posted back to back winning records, and the skies the limit going forward heading into the 2019 season. Our student-athletes routinely are named to the MEC All-Academic Team for achieving grade point averages of 3.7 to 4.0, or named to the MEC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for having grade point averages between 3.25 and 3.69.

RETENTION AND STUDENT SUCCESS The Center for Academic Engagement The Center for Academic Engagement (CAE) provides academic support services to include success coaching, skill-building workshops, and academic monitoring to ensure West Virginia State University students are positioned for educational success.

Learning Enrichment Center

West Virginia State University’s Learning Enrichment Centers provide one-onone tutoring services to students free of charge. The centers provide tutoring and academic support in business, natural sciences, mathematics, and social sciences disciplines, as well as assistance with writing assignments.


COUNSELING AND ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES Student Accessibility Resources Student Accessibility Resources works with students who have disabilities in an effort to coordinate accommodations and support services that enable equal access to an education and university life.

Mental Health Services

Counseling and Accessibility Services provides personal counseling, outreach, and consultation services to address the emotional, social, and academic needs of our students.

Peer Education

Peer Educators are students who work in conjunction with Counseling and Accessibility Services staff to deliver preventative programs and events to fellow students. They are trained by specialists in topics such as alcohol and other drugs, sexual assault and sexual health, body image, nutrition, and wellness.

Collegiate Recovery Program

The Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is a support program for students in recovery from substance use disorder and addictive behaviors. The CRP provides students an opportunity to bond together in an alcoholfree and drug-free environment. The CRP is a safe and nurturing community in which students in recovery can be empowered in furthering their academic, professional and personal potential.

CAREER SERVICES

Take control of your future through the Office of Career Services. Students can receive career counseling, job search and internship assistance, and guidance on preparation for future careers and graduate school applications. Also, students can take advantage of educational workshops that provide them skills in developing a road map for future career success.

City life and outdoor treasures mix it up in Charleston, our state’s capital. You will find city living minutes away from our active campus. Being close to West Virginia’s Capital City offers our students opportunities to explore and learn so close to campus. Enjoy free admissions for tours of our State Capitol Building, the governor’s mansion and West Virginia State Museum.
