Changes announced for 2016 graduation activities, preparation New myConnect tab among this year's alterations By KYLE DAWSON
Assistant Sports Editor
Changes are coming to the commencement activities at Waynesburg. Though some may seem small, the impact they will have on the overall experience of commencement will be noticed, according to Mary Fox, event planner at Waynesburg University. Abby Pittinaro, academic event planner for the university, said some of the changes are minor, such as flower sales—parents can purchase flowers for graduates. Other changes, such as aspects dealing with the luncheon for parents and students, will have a larger impact. “It’s important for everyone to know about these, not just the seniors,” said Pittinaro. “We have new lunch details, flower sales available to [the] day of commencement, an updated campus map; [we] changed the format of the mandatory senior meeting and finally we have a new graduation tab on myConnect to make it easier for students to get information.” Fox said these changes primarily came from student feedback each year after graduation. “Each spring we make it a priority to listen to feedback from graduates concerning commencement exercises,” said Fox. “We try to make positive improvements each year.” In regards to the luncheon this year, tickets will
not only be affordable, but students will be able to bring as many guests as they want. There will also be two seatings for the luncheon. “This year, we are excited to offer luncheon tickets for graduates and their families and friends at a minimal cost, thus enabling each graduate to have an unlimited number of guests at the luncheon,” said Fox. “In previous years, we have had to limit the number of guests to two per graduate. This change increases the amount of guests we can accommodate for the luncheon.” As for the campus map, changes have been made to make it more interactive, according to Pittinaro and Fox. “It’s kind of a one-stop shop map because there are so many things included,” said Fox. People will now be able to hover over parts of the map and those places will light up. For example, Pittinaro said, if users want to find restrooms, they can hover over the word and those facilities will light up. The mandatory senior meeting, which, according to Pittinaro, was not laid out in the best way in years prior, will also be different this year. “We have important information for the seniors about leading up to the day of commencement and the day of,” said Pittinaro. “We restructured it a bit and added room for questions, so it will be more interactive this year.” Pe r h ap s t h e bi g ge s t change that students will see, said Fox and Pittinaro, is the access to the informaGRADUATE >> A3
The results are in. Waynesburg University students have spoken, and they have collectively elected current junior Ryan Schwertfeger as the president of Student Senate. He will be taking over for current president Michael Merten. Schwertfeger was delighted to hear the news of his election, and he is grateful for the support he received from the student body.
“Well of course it’s just euphoria that you won,” said Schwertfeger. “I put a lot of time into the campaign. We had the video ad, the radio ad and I had ads on Facebook and Instagram, so I was everywhere.” Schwertfeger ran against Anthony Juliani in the election, and although the actual numbers of the vote cannot be released, he was told that the margin was fairly close. Regardless, Schwertfeger was honored that he was the chosen candidate.
“I am extremely happy about it, and I have never had as many people tell me that they were really happy about it,” said Schwertfeger. However, as the president, there are some ideas circulating in his mind on what should be changed to improve Student Senate and its relationship with other students. “Essentially, I want to finish a few things that I didn’t get to finish this year as the SENATE >> A2
‘The light at the end of the tunnel’ With new prosthetic leg, Kurt Detwiler is optimistic about return to WU in fall By JACOB MEYER Sports Editor
Last May, during the summer before his senior year as a business major and football player at Waynesburg University, Kurt Detwiler was a passenger in a fatal one-car crash, which resulted in an above-the-knee amputation of his left leg. Kurt was in a coma for nearly three weeks after the crash and spent the next 3 1/2 months away from home in the hospital and in outpatient care. Since the crash, Kurt has undergone more than 30 surgeries — most of them within the critical weeks following the accident. But today, after months of grueling rehab and dealing with the reality that life will never be the same, Kurt can walk. “It shows me the light at the end of the tunnel here…that I’m going to be alright.”
ago. What stands out to him the most is the look on his mom’s face. “My mom was there, the doctors were there, and they were so proud,” he said. “Just seeing how proud my mom was that we’ve come that far and have been able to do that. I was more happy that she was happy than I was that I was walking.” These past six weeks with the leg have been brighter than the previous eight months were for Kurt. “I’ll be honest, before I didn’t do anything. I sat in bed at night and through the day,” he said. “I didn’t do anything other than watch TV, went to therapy here and there, came back and sat in bed. I didn’t do anything and didn’t have the motivation to do anything.” Now, he enjoys the little things he can do that he couldn’t for those eight months: getting a glass of water, picking out his clothes or going on walks on the trails with his mom and aunt. “You take a lot of things for granted when you can do them and then when you can’t it sucks, you know, those little things,” he said. “And then you get it back, and it’s amazing and you just want
for next semester. “I’m happy to just have the chance to come back to Waynesburg for everything that the whole school has done for me,” he said. “I want to finish up there. I don’t want to go anywhere else.” Kurt’s friends and family tell him how much happier he looks since he got his leg. Head football coach Rick KURT >> A4

Kurt officially got his prosthetic leg on Feb. 18, but he had walked with a prosthetic a few times before that. He started walking with a walker, but has since progressed to using just the assistance of a cane. Kurt still remembers those first steps with his prosthetic leg a few months
to do everything.” The little things, while important to Kurt, won’t outweigh the joy of eventually returning to Waynesburg University as a student. He thinks he’ll be able to return
