Going To The Library

The library is a great place to visit for help with school work, and for fun. You can go to your library, and there will always be someone there to help you find what you want. That someone is a librarian. You can ask your librarian to help you find books about any subject that interests you. If you are having a hard time finding an answer to a question, ask your librarian to help you find the answer. 4

Libraries are also a great place to go if you want a quiet place to read or study. They have areas with cozy chairs where you can curl up and read a book. They also have tables and chairs where you can work on school reports. Don’t forget to visit your library, and remember to thank you the librarian for help. ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE

The selfish dog

A farmer had an ox and a dog. The ox helped him in his fields and the dog watched the house at night. One evening the ox returned home very tired. He was very hungry. He went to the manger to eat hay. But he found the dog sitting on it. ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE

The dog barked at him and would not let him eat it. The ox said to the dog, “Please, get aside and let me eat the hay. It is of no use to you.” But the dog replied, “Since I myself cannot eat the hay, I will not let anyone else have it.” So the ox had to go hungry that day. There are some selfish people in the world also. They would not let others have what they themselves cannot get. 18

The Sun and The Wind

Once there was a beautiful contest between the sun and the wind. It was to see which of the two was stronger than the other. The wind was very proud of itself and its prowess. It said, “Even the mighty clouds bow before me. They know that I can drive them away.” The sun said, “It is the time that will tell you who is stronger of the two.” ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE

Soon they saw a man who was wearing a coat. The sun said, “Let us see who makes the man to take off his coat.” The wind tried first. It blew harder and harder. But the man instead of removing his coat, wrapped it more and more. So, the wind failed. Now it was the turn of the sun to try its strength. It began to shine. It became hotter and hotter. Ultimately, the man felt obliged to remove the coat. The wind lost and the sun won. 20

parrot. The owner further said, If you pull the string on the left leg, he’ll say; Hi, how are you? And if you pull the string on the right leg, he’ll say; “I’m fine, thank you.” At this the lady asked, “What if I pull both the strings?” “Then I would fall from this perch, you are a stupid lady!” answered the parrot. 22

Where do you live?

People live in different kinds of homes. I live in a tent. It is made of animal skin. My family often moves. The tent goes with us. I live in a hot, dry country. Our roof is made of thatch. Our house is made of clay. The clay dries in the hot sun. Then we can move in! This is my grandfather’s house. It is painted in bright colours. I live in a big city. Many children here live in blocks of flats. We have lifts and stairs to get up and down. ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE

A Wise Old Owl

There was an old owl that lived in an oak. Everyday he saw incidents happening around him. Yesterday he saw a boy helping an old man to carry a heavy basket. Today he saw a girl shouting at her mother. The more he saw the less he spoke. As he spoke less, he heard more. He heard people talking and telling stories. 24

ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE

PRIMARY 2

He heard a woman saying that an elephant jumped over a fence. He also heard a man saying that he had never made a mistake. The old owl had seen and heard about what happened to people. Some became better and some became worse. But the old owl had become wiser each and every day. Moral of the story: You should be observant, talk less but listen more. This will make you a wise person. ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE

It was very strong. It was as if a giant hand was shaking her house. The lights were on. Michelle turned the TV on but it had no news about the earthquake. She turned on the radio. The radio said that it was a 4.7 earthquake. But there was no damage. No one was hurt. 26

Get Set for Space

What is it like to go into space? To meet some men and women who will become astronauts. We have to learn a lot about the spacecraft. We must know how to make everything work. We might have to repair something outside the spacecraft. We practise in a pool. In space, we will float like this, too. A spacecraft may land in the wrong place. So we learn to take care of ourselves. Machines help us to keep fit in space. We do not mind working. Going into space makes a dream come true. ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE
