Urban Renewal in Urban Historic Conservation Areas

Project: 4th year in graduate school of design 2019.03-2019.08

“Landscape urbanist design strategies are targeted not only towardphysical but also socail and cultural transformations, functioning associal and ecological agents."

Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Nanluoguxiang began to show functional compound. In modern times, the new constructions have made the hutong space narrow and disorderly, making it easier for people to cross their own boundaries and intrude on the social and cultural exchanges of other groups.

We hope to increase the interaction between people and protect the private space belonging to the indigenous people while increasing human communication, extending its meaning on the boundary of the original space, creating the shared space for residents and visitors as a transition between public and private space, promoting their social behavior and cultural exchange while reducing the estrangement and preserving the independence of the original space.

The planning of Nanluoguxiang can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. It has always been a "rich area" where many dignitaries and celebrities have lived, and now it has mainly become a sightseeing place for tourists and a residence for residents. The following mapping will show the contradictory density of tourists and residents in Beijing and its relationship with the nature of surrounding land.

Local Residents vs Tourists

Based on the different behavior patterns of tourists and residents, the most attractive places can be elicited.

-02Weave the city

Urban Design of Sanjiangkou district, Fuzhou City

Project: Competition organized by the Fuzhou Government 2022.04-2022.06

Individual Work Instructor: He Fang Location: Fuzhou, China Area: 5289.65ha

“When people wander and linger in the same space, it naturally leads to various social activities. This means that as long as the conditions for necessary and spontaneous activities in publicspace are improved, social activities will be indirectly promoted"

The newly built high-speed railway station and railways in the center of the city interrupted the connection and communication between two blocks, resulting in a lot of vacant land and high fragmentation of green space, which hindered people's communication activities. However, The form of the railway actually can promote the communication between the community groups; they are not the destroyers of the urban fabric but the organizers. If the negative space of the railway can attract the participation of citizens, it can become the stem of communication between multiple communities. I introduced part of the railway underground to restore the historical texture of the above-ground space. Citizens could participate in this low-activity space through three-dimensional transportation and other means. This move made it possible to restore the original traffic structure, and the life people take for granted was preserved and enriched.

There is a road with the highest grade in east and west, and a road with the highest grade in north and south, and the traffic volume in each direction is different. You can clearly see that the degree of the development has a high distribution around the two hills It is obvious that the contradiction between people and the city is highest at the railway station. Renovation of Luntou Village Ancestral Hall and Square

Project: The program was commissioned by Luntou village committee 2021.03-2021.05

Individual Work Instructor: He Fang Location: Guangzhou, China Area:4.84ha

“Urban formal public organizations need a kind of informal public life to set off and play a role in harmony with the private life of urban people."

“It is clear that 'communality', the source of the new suburban spirit, has played a very damaging role in the city. Many things are required to be 'shared', and such demands have driven the city's citizens apart."

The cultural square in front of Li ancestral Hall in Luntou Village is the most important activity place for local villagers and migrant workers. However, the two types of residents have different needs and time for using this place. On the one hand, the traditional design mode is difficult to fit the dynamic demand changes, on the other hand, the use of the contradictory site also obstructs the communication between the two groups of people. Considering these problems, I adopted adjustable landscape devices in the design to meet the needs of various groups of people at different times.

Local residents first came from Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, and later people from different regions moved to the area. The cultures of different regions are integrated here, so they have a special folk culture background, such as lion dance, dragon boat, village opera and so on. At the same time, the area also has Internet giants, which have attracted a new generation of immigrants to the village. The population of the indigenous population is aging, and the problem of population outflow is serious. On the other hand, the contradictions between the new villagers and the old villagers are getting worse.

History of Luntou Village

Thousands of years ago, this was a typical riverine wetland, and was sparsely populated.

The culture brought by Luntou villagers has gradually combined with the local Guangfu culture and formed its own characteristics.

During the period of the Republic of China, the development of various folk activities in Luntou village reached its peak, and traditional festivals often had grand performances

The development of the Internet industry has increased the proportion of young people in the village, and Luntou Park has begun to have some trendy activities.

The traditional culture in Luntou Village has formed the unique dragon boat culture, ancestral hall culture and social drama culture.

Historical Image Analysis

Fishermen from Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, migrated here, and the view gave them a familiar sense of the fishing grounds at home. Ancestral hall

Historical Data Analysis

The new era has begun to revive, but urbanization and population outflow have led to a decline in the number of these events. Some traditional activities are on the verge of extinction.

*Data were obtained by combining historical images and field surveys.

Residence Factory Green

Under the subway destroyed the original ancestral temple, successively decided to update Luntou Park as an opportunity to meet the activity needs of the old and new villagers.

There are too few leisure facilities and space for square dance.

I haven't been able to see lion dance or Cantonese opera for a long time.

It would be nice to have a place for extreme sports.

I want a place for square dance tonight.

It must be hard to satisfy so many people at once.

Yi ah ah.

Luntou Park is located in the middle village of Luntou City. There is a large density of surrounding buildings, and a large number of illegal temporary buildings. The types of people are complex.

Moist Air

The illegal buildings around the site were cleared, the well-structured buildings were retained to give the desired function to the residents, and the facade was updated to dredge the previously illegally occupied channels. Connecting the main green space of Luntou Park and the surrounding small green space to form a complete green space system, forming a perfect tour system.

Typical Lingnan Layout

Back to the mountain and face the water, sit in north and face to south, a typical layout with great ventilation.

Thinking on Material Selection

① The villagers' hometown is famous for bamboo. ③ Bamboo material is highly plastic ② The bamboo element of the boat also reminds the villagers of old fishing days.

The Community Core of The Villager

Renovated Luntou Park will not only serve as an activity exchange center for Luntou villagers, but also serve as a stage and outdoor exhibition hall for the revival of traditional Chinese cultural activities by providing various activity conditions with the flexibility of the site.
