Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for their academic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes Bearcat Athletics great.

2012 SEASON REVIEW

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Willamette women’s soccer team was 5-13-2 during the 2012 season, including a 3-11-2 record in the NWC. Six of WU’s losses were by a single goal.

Looking to return to prominence in the Northwest Conference, the WU women’s soccer team features 19 returning players, including eight starters, as well as eight incoming freshmen.

Serving as a bright spot was sophomore forward Ashland Bernard. While playing in all 20 games (17 starts), Bernard led the team with 5 goals and 3 assists for 13 total points. Three of her goals came in a single game when she recorded a hat trick against Lewis & Clark on Sept. 23. In the game at L&C, Bernard’s hat trick helped the Bearcats defeat the Pioneers, 4-3 in overtime. Veronica Ewers scored the winning goal 9:18 into the first overtime. Bernard was honored for her stellar play throughout the season by being named Second Team All-NWC. She was the only Bearcat to earn Second Team honors, but several teammates were also recognized for excellent individual performances. A trio of seniors (Andi Rowan, Shannon Scott, and Ariel Wilson) joined sophomore forward Sarah Desautels in being named Honorable Mention All-NWC this past season. Desautels tied Bernard for the team lead in goals with five while starting in 13 of 20 games. Wilson earned H.M. All-NWC recognition for the second consecutive year, tallying a goal and three assists. Rowan started in every game for Willamette in 2012, finishing with one goal and two assists. Scott, a defender, led a youthful Bearcat defense while topping the team’s roster in minutes played. Nicole Price served as the team’s main goalkeeper as she started in 17 of the 20 contests. Price earned a 1.66 goals against average, 79 saves and three shutouts. Head Coach Hillary Arthur wrapped up her fifth year with the Bearcats. She has registered a total of 44 wins.

For the second consecutive season, the Barcats face the challenge of replacing a very talented group of seniors. Andi Rowan, Shannon Scott and Ariel Wilson all garnered NWC honors a year ago. A strong cast of returning starters led by Sarah Desautels will be working to fill that void in 2013. Desautels returns for her junior year. She was WU’s leading goal scorer in 2012. She notched five goals, including one gamewinner, while playing in all 20 matches. For her efforts, Desautels was selected to receive Honorable Mention All-NWC honors for the second consecutive year. Senior Paige Lancourt started in 16 games for Willamette as a midfielder in 2012, helping anchor the team’s defensive efforts. She also contributed with two goals and 12 shots on goal. Malia Simpson and Veronica Ewers both produced five points for the Bearcats in 2012. Simpson scored one goal and added three assists as a junior, while Ewers, a sophomore, scored two goals with one assist. After opening the 2013 campaign against Howard Payne University, the Bearcats will travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. to compete in the Slugfest Tournament. While there, Willamette will oppose three California teams: La Verne University, Pomona-Pitzer and UC-Santa Cruz. Willamette kicks-off its NWC schedule at home against Lewis & Clark College on Sept. 18. That match marks the start of a four game home stand for the Bearcats.

The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.

Students achieve experience by covering practices and games, and by working in the treatment centers where they help Willamette’s certified athletic trainers with rehabilitation of injuries. Our athletic training staff works closely with our team physicians from Silverton Hospital, the physical therapist from PT Northwest and the staff at the Bisohop Wellness Center on the WU campus to provide care for our varsity athletes. Whether working one-on-one with a professor, studying abroad, pursuing innovative research, interning with a business or nonprofit, or leading a campus organization, you can hone your creativity, global perspective and critical thinking for a lifetime of success.

Since 1990, a total of 10 faculty members at Willamette have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored as belonging among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and future careers of their students.

WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but students still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports. About 25% of students are NCAA Division III student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

Salem, Oregon

Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

sparks field The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility on the WU campus. Sparks Field has lights for night games and seats 500 fans. The facility, which features a FieldTurf surface, is one of the top small college fields in the Pacific Northwest. Sparks Field also includes covered seating for both teams and has a public address system. Adjacent to Sparks Field is the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the soccer teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Cone Field House for volleyball as well as men’s and women’s basketball, McCulloch Stadium for football plus track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. Cross country meets are held in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

sparks CENTER Sparks Field is located next to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center also has offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. There are extra courts on the lower level for basketball and volleyball, plus handball and racquetball courts. There is a weight lifting and fitness center, as well as classrooms and locker rooms.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Willamette has won 28 NWC team titles since 2003. Current coaches at WU have achieved NWC Coach of the Year honors 24 times. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

MALIA SIMPSON

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
