It is home to 1,801 undergraduates and 805 graduate students in law, management and education. The campus is centered around the Mill Stream and is home to numerous ancient trees and open green spaces. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest is accurately reflected on Willamette’s 61-acre campus. Guided and inspired since 1842 by its motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” Willamette fosters community and values service. At Willamette, students can be locally involved in social and environmental issues or study abroad. Willamette is ranked third in the nation among colleges its size with more than 270 alumni having joined the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961. The National Wildlife Federation recognized WU as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability activities. This achievement, a direct result of studentled initiatives, is further evidence that Willamette lives by its motto, producing Page 2

responsible citizens of the world who are prepared to live with intention and integrity. At Willamette, the student-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and serve as advisors. The professors are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. The size of Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Ford Hall, a new academic building, was completed in 2009 and houses Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-squarefoot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol. In particular, Willamette’s students are often chosen for internships with government organizations.

He has earned an overall record of 248-185 (.573) at Willamette and has led the Bearcats to a 158-110 (.590) record in the Northwest Conference. In 2010, Williams led the Bearcats to a 28-12 overall record, including 20-8 (2nd place) in the NWC. Willamette scored 241 runs (6.03 avg), achieved 351 hits (8.78 per game) and stole 87 bases (2.18 per game). He has coached the Bearcats to seven consecutive 20-win seasons. Willamette has achieved a combined record of 82-29 (.739) over the last three years. Williams was selected NWC Coach of the Year in 2000, after leading the Bearcats to a 25-10 overall record and a second place tie in the NWC at 15-6. The 2000 team led the nation with an impressive 0.76 team

earned run average and was ranked #5 in the West Region. The success of the 2000 and 2005 teams indicate how much the team improved after Williams arrived. In 1998, the season before Williams took over, the Bearcats were 5-33 overall. Just two years later, the 2000 team was the most-improved squad in NCAA Division III, gaining 16 games over 1999 and up 21 games from 1998. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff for the 1999 season, Williams served as the head coach at Shoreline Community College in Seattle for four years. His efforts gradually improved the team, which went 25-12 during the 1998 season, on its way to qualifying for the NWAACC Tournament. Williams graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1995. He received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Administration. Williams resides in Salem with his wife, Genesis. Damian Williams at Willamette Year

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

NWC and NCAA Division III

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew in 1978. Whitworth left out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and withdrew in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted from the NAIA to the NCAA.

Page 20

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has 447 members and is the largest NCAA division. Division III is about following your passions and discovering your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by completing an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment. Student-athletes can push themselves to excellence. At WU, studentathletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. An emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes and their overall academic and athletic success.

Season Outlook 2011 It has been a simple, yet successful, plan of attack for the Willamette softball team: Run the bases whenever possible and blast a variety of extra-base hits. That strategy has made the Bearcats both a winning and a high-scoring team. Willamette enters 2011 with six straight seasons of 20 or more victories, including 25-11 in 2008, 29-6 in 2009 and 28-12 in 2010. During the past three years, WU has earned a 82-29 (.739) record, averaged 6.4 runs per game and achieved 295 extra-base hits, including 89 home runs. In 2010, Willamette tallied 241 runs in 40 games, while belting 90 extra-base hits, with 56 doubles, 13 triples and 21 homers. Fifteen of the 18 players on last year's team are back this spring, including the top eight hitters and all three pitchers. Jessica Barry (Jr., LF) led the Bearcats last season with a .411 batting average. She also led the team with 33 runs scored. She contributed a team-high six sacrifice bunts and stole 16 bases on 18 attempts.

WU was picked to finish second in the Northwest Conference Preseason Poll of the league's head coaches. Linfield College, which won the NWC title and was second at the 2010 NCAA Division III National Tournament, was listed first in the poll. Linfield is ranked #1 and Willamette is #20 in the NCAA Division III Preseason Poll from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The Bearcats and the Wildcats will renew their rivalry at WU on April 9-10 in a pair of doubleheaders. The Bearcats open the year on Feb. 20 with two games at the Northwest Cup, set for Hood View Park in Clackamas, Ore. WU will play Oregon Tech and the host Cavaliers from Concordia University (Ore.). Willamette will start NWC action one week later with doubleheaders at the WU Softball Field against Pacific University on

Feb. 26-27. Overall, the Bearcats will play 28 games in conference play. In March, WU will travel to California to take on the University of Redlands, the University of La Verne, Whittier College and Pomona-Pitzer. All eight games will be against NCAA West Region opponents. Head Coach Damian Williams is in his 13th season at Willamette. He has earned a career record of 248-185 (.573), including 145-75 (.659) over the past six years.

WU Athletic Facilities

The Bearcats play home games at the Willamette University Softball Field.

The Willamette University Softball Field is located on the east side of campus. It includes covered dugouts, a team locker room, batting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The field also has an infield tarp, allowing the Bearcats to play when many other fields are wet or muddy. Overall, the WU Softball Field is a quality facility. The natural grass outfield surface and dirt infield are well-maintained and provide for smooth play throughout the spring. Willamette has a variety of other venues for its intercollegiate athletic teams. John Lewis Field is the home of Willamette baseball. The field is located at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium and has seating for 1,000 fans. The field is natural grass and stays green nearly year-round due to Oregon’s moderate climate. Willamette’s football team plays home games at McCulloch Stadium, located near John Lewis Field. The football stadium is just two blocks from campus, seats 2,400 spectators, features a video scoreboard and has lights for night games. McCulloch Stadium has a FieldTurf playing surface, along with spacious locker rooms and meeting rooms. It provides the atmosphere of an old stadium, but with modern conveniences. The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility that showcases Willamette’s track and field and cross country teams, which host meets each year.

The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. Cone Field House is the home court for the Willamette men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU Natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights and seats 500 spectators. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets each year. The WU men’s and women’s golf teams usually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club or Creekside Golf Club. Members of the men’s and women’s rowing hold workouts on the Willamette River in downtown Salem.
