WHERE WE’VE BEEN

WHERE WE’RE GOING

Over the last ten years Willamette track & field has been a dominant force in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcat men and women have won 15 of the last 20 Northwest Conference Championships, including nine consecutive wins by the women from 2002-10.

The 2012 Bearcat track and field teams come into the season hungry to bring the Northwest Conference Championships back to Salem. Willamette graduated several national caliber athletes, but picked up some talented freshmen to help fill the losses.

Willamette has been a constant presence on the national scene as well. The Bearcats have featured numerous All-Americans, including seven-time national champion Nick Symmonds and several athletes who achieved national runner-up finishes.

On the men’s side, senior Leo Castillo is the defending champion in the conference 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run, and is looking for a return trip to the NCAA Championships. He is second on WU’s all-time list in the 10,000 at 30:38.01. Senior Ben Donovan just missed qualifing for the NCAA Championships in the steeplchase in 2011. He will try to repeat as conference champion.

Symmonds holds the NCAA Division III national record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:45.83 and Jimmy Watts is second on the all-time decathlon list with 7,384 points. In the NCAA women’s records, Kimber Mattox is seventh all-time in the steeplechase and Sarah Zerzan is tenth all-time in the 5,000-meter run. In 2011, Kimber Mattox earned her third All-America award at the NCAA Championships by finishing second in the steeplechase. She also took ninth in the 5,000-meter run. Evin Colignon placed fifth in the decathlon for his first All-America award. Also representing Willamette at the NCAA Championships were Stefan Redfield in the 1,500-meter run and Leo Castillo in the 10,000-meter run. David Oppat competed in the shot put and Brandi Miller participated in the heptathlon. At the Northwest Conference Championships Jaela Dinsmore won the 400-meter dash making it the sixth year in a row that a Willamette has won that event. Paul Winger won his third title in the 400-meter dash in as many attempts.

Senior Paul Winger hopes to win his fourth Northwest Conference championship in the 400-meter dash and his third NWC title in the 200-meter dash. Senior Neal Howard is eighth all-time at WU in the 100-yard dash and should score points in the sprints. Senior Brandi Miller is the defending conference champion in the heptathlon at 4,406 points. She finished 18th at the 2011 NCAA Championships. With her heptathlon and other contributions, Miller will help the women battle to regain the NWC title. Sophomore Katie Mariman was runner-up in the NWC in the pole vault last season and just missed qualifing for the NCAA Championships. She will take on quality competition in the NWC, while working to make her mark on the national scene. The defending NWC champion in the 400-meter dash, Jaela Dinsmore, returns for her senior season. She also will help the team in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.

Jaela Dinsmore is at the core of the Willamette women’s sprint crew. She is the defending NWC champion in the 400-meter dash and was a top seed in the 200-meter dash before falling to a hamstring injury. In 2011, Dinsmore was ranked in the top 40 in the nation in the 400. She is in the WU Top 10 in the 200, 400, and 1600-meter relay, and is listed three times on the 400-meter relay. Dinsmore was named Capital One Academic All-America in 2011.

Sarah McSweeney, an Exercise Science major, is heavily involved in the WU Athletic Training office as a student athletic trainer. She also works at a local physical therapy office. McSweeney finished fifth at the 2011 Northwest Conference Championships in the steeplechase and is currently ranked 10th all time at Willamette in that event. In the fall, she was a member of the WU cross country team that qualified for the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Brandi Miller is truly talented. A music major and involved in Residence Life, she also competes in one of the most demanding events in track and field. She qualified for the 2011 NCAA Championships in the heptathlon, a two-day, seven-event test of athleticism. She is on WU’s Top 10 list in the hurdles (100 and 400) and the 400-meter relay, and is third all-time in the heptathlon. At the 2011 NWC meet, she scored in the heptathlon and two individual events.

Sam Nhim is a testament to what hard work and dedication can achieve. Her improvement over the past four years has been remarkable. She leads by example on the track and in the weight room. At the 2011 Northwest Conference championships, Nhim scored in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 400-meter relay and 1600-meter relay. She is a member of the 400-meter relay team that is third all-time at Willamette.

Sally Venable is a distance runner for the Bearcats who has contributed to the track and field team as well as the cross country team. She is among the top runners in the NWC in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She took fourth place in the steeplechase at the 2011 NWC Championships. Her personal record of 11:36.60 in the steeplechase places her eighth on the all-time list. Venable ran for WU at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

COMMITMENT TO ACADEMICS

ACADEMIC AWARDS

Student-athletes are at Willamette to get a high quality education. While many of the things you learn while a member of the team will follow you throughout your life, it’s the classroom work that will set you on a path to success.

The track and field teams routinely maintain some of the highest cumulative GPAs in the Athletic Department. Track athletes have earned numerous academic awards, including six NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and nine CoSIDA Academic All-America awards.

The track and field program makes great efforts to make sure that student-athletes have every opportunity to succeed academically. Practice schedules are often moved around academic conflicts, and missed class due to travel is kept to a minimum. Many student-athletes peform better in the classroom while in season. The track program takes great pride in the academic success of its student-athletes.

Among the Bearcats’ academically distinguished alumni are Chris Platano `10, who was a Kemper Scholar and earned an Elite 88 award during cross country; Lucas Nebert `08 and Ali Maki `09, who both won Fulbright Grants; and Natalie Muren `06, who was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

TRAINING PRINCIPLES

TRAVEL AND COMPETITION

Sprints, jumps, throws and distance athletes all require different training, but there are several general principles that guide the Bearcat coaches throughout the season. The first goal for every member of the team is that at the end of the season they are healthy and excited about competing. When this happens, athletes excel.

The Bearcats rarely need to travel far from home. Numerous home meets and nearby competition against Division I, II, III and NAIA institutions make travel less intrusive on the athletes’ lives. This results in fewer missed classes and allows the athletes to sleep in the comfort of their own beds the night before a competition.

In the Willamette training model no one day is more important than another. What this means is that Bearcat coaches err on the side of caution. If an athlete is sick, injured or has been up all night finishing a paper, a hard work-out is probably not in the athlete’s best interest.

A Bearcat track athlete typically has one competition opportunity per week. Coaches set up athletes’ schedules to maximize their opportunuities. Many athletes only compete in one or two events per meet. This gives them the best chance of performing at their highest level. Maximizing opportunities results in maximizing success.

SPORTS MEDICINE The Willamette University’s sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes The department consists of two components: service and education. The service component includes up-to-date evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and/or referral procedures in the event of an athlete becoming injured or ill.

Shane Wibel, ATC Erin Scharer, ATC Ken Smith, ATC Head Athletic Trainer Asst. Athletic Trainer Asst. Athletic Trainer

The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical situation. Willamette has treatment centers at Sparks Center and McCulloch Stadium. These facilities are staffed by 3 full time athletic trainers and several work study students. Students involved in the athletic training program gain valuable work experience by covering practices and games, as well as working in the treatment centers on a rotating schedule. Our team physicians call Siverton Hospital their home and our physical therapy contractor is PT Northwest. From our three fulltime athletic trainers to our doctors and physical therapists, Willamette athletes receive top not medical care.

Bush’s Pasture Park covers over 90 acres and surrounds the McCulloch Stadium and Charles Bowles Track complex. It is a public park and is highly utilized by the Willamette community and the citizens of Salem. A bark trail around the perimeter of the park, which is approximately 1.5 miles, is a great place for Willamette runners to complete an easy run or a full workout. Runners on the WU distance squad tally a majority of their miles in the park. They also spend time at Minto-Brown Island Park, located about two miles from the track. The 900-acre park doubles as a wildlife refuge. Many of its 20 miles of paths are paved, but you also can run on the soft surfaces of bark paths.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

NCAA DIVISION III NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
