THE FIRST EUROPEAN COLONIAL CITY Las Palmas de Gran Canaria displays the mark left by Europe and America, in a culture of tradition and globalization that is born out of the historical district of Vegueta, a witness to the birth of leading personalities such as Alfredo Kraus.
LA PRIMERA CIUDAD COLONIAL EUROPEA
It was the founder hub of the city, the first emplacement for the Castilians in the Atlantic, and the site from which the Castilian Crown started its conquest of the Canary Islands.
Este fue el núcleo fundacional de la ciudad, el primer emplazamiento castellano en el Atlántico y el lugar donde la Corona de Castilla inició la Conquista de Canarias.
The district of Vegueta has a distinctly colonial feel, with its urban sprawl of backstreets and balconied stately houses, and was declared a National Historical and Artistic Site in 1973. It all revolves around a large square that used to house the colonial centres of power, just as the new cities that sprung up in America would do.
El barrio de Vegueta, de estilo colonial, con su trama urbana de callejuelas y casonas con balcones, fue declarado Conjunto Histórico-Artístico Nacional en 1973. Todo gira en torno a una gran plaza que acogía los centros del poder colonial, tal como se reprodujo en las nuevas ciudades de América.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
To the south of Gran Canaria is a paradise of sand dunes and crystal clear water, and is one of the most interesting protected areas in Europe. Known as the Special Natural Reserve of the Maspalomas Sand Dunes, it spreads out over 404 hectares, in the form of a huge field of golden sandy dunes, the Charca lake and palm grove constitute a quite unique ecosystem right on the sea edge.
This marine and sports port is known as the “the little Venice of the Canaries”, a haven that lies between steep cliffs and a tranquil sea which tempts visitors a dip.
The Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park is an enormous excavation standing over the former capital of the kingdom of Agáldar. The museum reveals the way of life prior to the arrival of the Europeans at Gran Canaria and its colonization. The Cueva Pintada is the best example of wall painting by the ancient Canarians, and one of the most important in the Atlantic.
This coastal location is also blessed with an unbeatable climate throughout the year. With constant sunshine, its ambient temperature oscillates between 20ºC and 25ºC, with mild night time temperatures.
It is situated to the southwest of the island, and the University of Siracusa (Nueva York), claims it is the place in Europe with the most sunny days and with one of the finest climates in the world. But if there is something really unforgettable about Mogán, it is its bright and colourful sunsets.
The settlement reveals in minute detail the indigenous houses and caves there, with views over the excavation from a grand walkway that goes all around the place.

En el sur de Gran Canaria se localiza un paraíso de dunas y aguas cristalinas, uno de los espacios protegidos más interesantes de Europa, la Reserva Natural Especial de las Dunas de Maspalomas, que se extiende por 404 hectáreas, con un gran campo de dunas de arena dorada, la Charca y un palmeral constituyen un ecosistema único junto al mar.
Este puerto marinero y deportivo es conocido como “la pequeña Venecia de Canarias”, un remanso entre escarpados acantilados y un mar tranquilo que invita a zambullirse.
El Museo y Parque Arqueológico Cueva Pintada es una enorme excavación sobre la antigua capital del Reino de Agáldar. El museo muestra la forma de vida anterior a la llegada de los europeos a Gran Canaria y la colonización. La Cueva Pintada es el mejor ejemplo de pintura rupestre de los antiguos canarios y uno de los más importantes del Atlántico.
Esta zona costera está, además, bendecida por un clima inmejorable durante todo el año. Con un sol constante, su temperatura ambiental oscila entre los 20ºC y 25ºC, y sus noches son templadas.
Situado al suroeste de la isla, la Universidad de Siracusa (Nueva York) afirma que es el lugar de Europa con más días despejados y uno de los mejores climas del mundo. Pero si hay algo inolvidable en Mogán es el colorido luminoso de sus puestas de sol.
El conjunto permite conocer con detalle las casas y cuevas indígenas, observando los trabajos de excavación desde una gran pasarela que rodea al poblado.
