Spring Has Sprung The winter season is officially over, even though it seemed that it never really came this year. Spring is in the air, which is evident by the flowers blooming and pollen increasing. Spring is also evident by the wonderful spring activities that are taking place in the Atlanta area, like the Dogwood Festival. For Christians spring represents the season we celebrate our most important holiday, Easter or Resurrection Day. This issue has events and things to do whether you’re interested in Easter celebrations or festivals that take advantage of our warmer weather.

What’s the 411? Atlanta: Christian Events

Christian Events This month’s issue has events on relationships. Are you still caught up? Involved with Roaz? Check out this month’s events to learn more… Come and take a stroll down memory lane with Sandra at the infamous Jazzy Spot for the equally infamous “Round Robin" with her friends Lydia, Shan and Kee Kee in the Spring of 1982, to hear the Sultry Soulful voice of Minka Wiltz and jazz tones of Burgandy Williams. “STILL CAUGHT UP” is a Directorial Debut by Miss Diva Tyler. You don’t want to miss this Onstage Stage Soiree.

Interview with Playwright, Oretha Brown-Johnson

What inspired you to be a playwright? My driving motivation is my father "Curtis Brown“, who was a prominent business owner, Negro league baseball player and entertainment producer. My father was known throughout my native city Key West, Florida as "Bop" because of his love for modern jazz that originated around 1940. Big name entertainers of the 60's & 70's like James Brown, Freda Payne, Mille Jackson, Betty Wright, Joe Tex, Johnny Taylor and many others traveled to Key West to perform. My father also traveled the country with the company of such artists for the love of entertainment. This love has prompted me to keep his legacy alive.

Still Caught Up

April 28 at 7pm and April 29 at 3pm $15 In Advance, $20 At The Door Clarkston Community Center, Clarkston http://stillcaughtup.eventbrite.com Sandra Cox, the main character opens with a monologue, reminiscing on her love affair with "Sweet Charlie Baby" the man that sang to her heart. Charlie was not just a man, he was a Nightingale with a thousand melodious songs in his repertoire. Sandra "Still Caught Up" in her relationship with Charlie considered him her everything and the basis for love, until things changed. April 2012

Why did you write this play, “Still Caught up”? The story serves as an eye-opener of God's grace with sprinkles of wisdom, encouragement, laughter, music, dancing and club life. The play is written to share how Friendship and Round Robins can be just what the doctor ordered. It also shares support, healing of broken hearts and regrets, and how it can make all the difference for creating a catalyst for change versus staying "Caught up."

What’s the 411? Atlanta: Spring Festivities

Spring Festivities Everyday people responses to… The spring season brings many things to mind, Resurrection Sunday, warmer weather, flowers in bloom and yes, the return of bugs. What are your favorite things about spring? “Spring seems to bring a sense of excitement to everyone! Kids get excited because they don't have to bundle up with a lot of clothes and they can play outside because it doesn't get dark early! In a spiritual sense spring is about hope. If winter represents things dying off, then spring is the evidence that the thing you thought was dead might just need the right temperature and season to grow.” Yonette, Social Worker

“What I love most about spring is watching the flowers blossom as they spring to life; observing daylight savings time and the reminder of Easter, which signifies Christ resurrection and the opportunity for warmer weather after a long and dark winter.” Charming, Executive Assistant

“Spring makes me smile. It makes me think of cookouts, family reunions and watermelon parties with friends.” Angela, RN Nurse

“You know it’s spring when you step outside and it smells fresh and serene. I like the smell of flowers and BBQs.” Lance, Insurance Agent

What’s the 411? Atlanta: Entertainment

Entertainment This month’s events not only entertain, but educates, uplifts and supports worthy causes. Interview with Playwright, Yvonne Pierre What inspired you to write this play? One of my passions is to motivate and uplift through storytelling. I have two sons (19 and 10), my youngest has Down syndrome. Over the years, I have been advocating through projects . I wanted to do an event that was entertaining, informative and uplifting and Then You Stand came to me and I immediately began to plan it. What is required to STAND? In many cases, people are so focused on the issue and the problems they face that they don’t even realize that they are already standing. To stand is to come to some form of peace with where you are in life. And to use those obstacles to push us to stand, not hold us down. And to let go of the things that are hindering us from being the best of God has created us to be.

Then You STAND! 14th

April 7 at 6pm | Street Playhouse, Atlanta Tickets $15 in advance, $20 at the door www.thenyoustand.com Y Pierre Productions presents “THEN YOU STAND,” a story about a newlywed couple, who are excitedly expecting their first child. Then, their unborn is diagnosed with a disability that leads them to question their relationships and beliefs. A turn of events forces them to reclaim their relationship, acceptance of their baby and ultimately their faith. In life, we face many challenges, THEN YOU STAND is an empowering stage production that will leave audiences with a profound message that no matter what the circumstance, there’s a bigger picture. The proceeds of THEN YOU STAND will benefit Emory Down Syndrome Research.

April 2012

What advice would you give to family and friends of someone who is facing similar challenges? The advice I would give other parents of special needs children, but not limited to, is that our strength to stand impacts our children directly. If a parent doesn’t have hope they will not be motivated to get the help and resources needed for their children. Come to Then You Stand it will be an empowering event.

The Black-Jew Dialogues

April 16 at 8pm | 14th Street Playhouse, Atlanta Tickets $15-$25 www.theblackjewdialogues.com What's so funny about two American minorities that have slavery, the KKK, and chicken livers in common? That's what you'll find out in this extraordinary two-actor play on the history and absurdity of prejudice and racism and the power of diversity. The Black-Jew Dialogues combines fast-paced sketches, improvisations, multi-media, puppets and a game show to create a show that has gained praise across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. at universities, high schools, synagogues, and theatres. In The Black-Jew Dialogues, Emmy-award winner Ron Jones and veteran performer Larry Jay Tish take the audience on a hysterical and poignant ride through three days they spent together in a cheap hotel room discussing their own experiences, the history of their people, and why there has been a growing rift between the two groups since the early 70's. Through their dialogue the April 2012

audience gains insight to the true nature of prejudice and how our inability to face our own biases separate us in ways that we may not even think about. They find humor in everything from the Jewish involvement in the Dutch slave trade to octogenarian grandmothers singing and dancing about the joys of soul food and Jewish comfort food. The O.N.E Program, a program designed to make white people less fearful of blacks, and JUDAR, the ability that Jews have to spot other Jews. The Black-Jew Dialogues is an exhilarating and insightful look at the state of race and cultural relations in America. You learn as much as you laugh. Following each performance is a discussion with the audience.
