Letter from the Bulletin Editor Hello Everyone! My name is Myrah Ahmad and I am your Bulletin Editor this year for WSU Circle K! My main task is to put bulletins together every month to keep our members up to date with service and social events coming up. This volume will introduce this years E-Board, summer highlights, our member of the month, and more!

Hope you all enjoy the first bulletin of the semester!

Hello,Welcome to Wayne State University Circle K International! Circle K International is the world’s largest student led collegiate service organization, its initiatives and values embody three pillars: service, leadership, and fellowship. At Wayne State, we work closely with activist organizations and the local Detroit community; our projects and initiatives aim to combat blight, illiteracy, hunger, homelessness, and health disparities. In the past, we have consistently volunteered with The Children’s Center, World Medical Relief, Arts & Scraps, HOPE Village, Detroit Abloom, Back Alley Bikes, Cass Community Social Services, and many more.

Although volunteer events and social gatherings will differ from previous semesters, members are currently participating in numerous remote volunteer opportunities, and serving the community through arrangements that ensure everyone’s safety. We hope that you will join us during Michigan Membership Week, September 1st-5th, as we start off the year with an entire week of remote volunteer and social events. This is a wonderful opportunity to make friends, establish connections, and learn about leadership opportunities offered to all members throughout the school year as we continue to operate virtually.

Lastly, we simply want to announce that WSUCKI stands in solidarity with Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and the Black Lives Matter movement. We look forward to long-term fundraisers and opportunities throughout the school year in order to raise continuous awareness and demonstrate our ongoing support.

Again, welcome to Wayne State Circle K, we are elated to have you join us for another year of impactful, enjoyable, and safe service, despite the unprecedented circumstances we are facing.

Member of the Month Hey everyone! In this section, we will post the member of the month for each respective bulletin. You can nominate a fellow member, or yourself! You can do this by filling out the Google form that will be emailed out near the end of each month.

The member of the month is....

Kari Lewis!

Kari's work at Books for Kids: At Books for Kids I got to help place stickers on thousands of donated books when school representatives came to pick them up. These stickers helped to inform anyone who saw the books that Books for Kids exists, which is very important because the organization is really doing something great for their community.

Why Kari likes volunteering: I like to volunteer because my family was the resilient of a lot of charity when I was younger. We were really struggling and it took a lot of kind-hearted strangers to keep us fed and clothed. Now that I’m on my feet, nothing makes me happier than paying all that kindness forward.

Kari's favorite thing about service and WSUCKI: My favorite part about WSUCKI is how easy it is to help! There is great communication and a ton of opportunities to fit any schedule. It’s nice to be around other people who are passionate about the same things as you.

Meet the E-Board

President Sara Ellias

Hello,My name is Sara Ellias and I have both the honor and privilege of serving as this year’s president of serving as this year’s president of WSU Circle K International. I am a third year biomedical physics major and physics minor. In my spare time I like to read and play with my dogs and cat! I believe that serving as serving as a member of Circle K at WSU is a unique and valuable experience, as the resilience and selflessness of Detroit’s community is incomparable. Some of my favorite events include Books for Kids Distribution, 24 Hours of Service, and Fall Rally. While it is inevitable that this year’s social and service events will look a tad different than those in the past, we have an exciting and opportunity-filled semester ahead of us! I encourage all students, of any year and major, to join Circle K; the experiences and friendships that you will make, both inside and outside the University, will serve you well!

Favorite Movies: Funny Girl, Argo, and Mixed Nuts Favorite Food: Taco Bell and bubble tea

Vice President Aidan Kilcline Hello! My name is Aidan Kilcline, I am an upcoming junior at Wayne State University and I am the Vice President of Circle K International. I find the natural sciences and chemistry most interesting, that is why I am a Public Health major with a Biological Sciences minor while on the pre-med pathway. I became interested in the sciences and the medical pathway because I have type 1 diabetes mellitus and would love to one day become more understanding of my disease to the extent that I can help others with it. Some hobbies that I have recently picked up include longboarding, attempting to learn an instrument (I am in between the saxophone and the guitar at the moment), and learning to cook. I tend to spend the time I am not studying or learning a new hobby watching TV or playing video games. I also have two dogs, one pitbull mix (Gracie) and one black labrador retriever (Tank), as well as a cat named Caesar.

Favorite TV shows: It’s always sunny in Philadelphia and One Piece Favorite Food: Eggs- there are so many things one can do with them, kind of like potatoes, and my grandmother's chicken noodle soup.

Ushna Khan Secretary

Hey guys! My name is Ushna Khan and I am the secretary for Circle K this year. I am a senior at Wayne State majoring in Public Health on the pre-med track. I have been a member of Circle K since my freshman year at WSU and have been provided with so many opportunities to volunteer, build relationships, and explore the city through this organization. What I love about Circle K is that it allows me to make a change in our community, while surrounding me with like minded individuals from Wayne State that are also dedicated to creating a positive change in Detroit. Although it will be virtual, I am looking forward to another great year of new service opportunities and friendships through Circle K! Favorite hobbies: Drawing, painting, and getting creative!

Favorite WSUCKI events: 24 Hours of Service and volunteering at the Children’s Center.

Nisha Khan Treasurer Hey guys! My name is Nisha Khan and I’m a sophomore here at WSU, majoring in public health and minoring in sociology; I am also this year’s treasurer for Circle K! What I love about Circle K is all the amazing volunteer work we do, we’re constantly volunteering at many different places each one different than the last. My favorite service project was helping out at the children’s center last year. You should all join Circle k, not only for the amazing volunteer experiences, but also because you get to meet so many awesome and sweet people while exploring Detroit!

Fav show: Parks and Rec Love taking pictures, traveling, reading Fav food at the moment: chicken wings and tacos

Myrah Ahmad Bulletin Editor Hello, I’m a Junior at Wayne State University, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Sociology. I have been a part of Circle K since my Freshman year and I love the community surrounding the club, and the many opportunities this organization provides. My favorite service event hosted by Circle K is 24 hours of service because it allowed me to get closer to my fellow club members and explore the many communities and organizations within the city of Detroit. Circle K allows you to gain a different point of view on Detroit and provides many volunteer opportunities which many students need for their future goals and resumes. This is my third year with Circle K, and I have already met so many new people, made connections, gotten in many hours of service, and explored so many new places and I can’t wait to continue to do this in my last two years at WSU. Hobbies: Traveling, nail art, watching Netflix and anime Favorite Foods: Pizza, bubble tea, ice cream, and any type of pasta

Summer Highlights

Books for Kids Distribution:

Homework Help: As some of you may know, WSU Circle K has collaborated with The Children’s Center to initiate a virtual tutoring program.

Tutors have the ability to pick the days and times that fit their availability and help some wonderful students with their work. Tutors help students take on difficult subject material and also coach them on increasing their attention span and engagement.

Detroit’s Books for Kids Program has been giving away free new and used children’s books to those who serve the literacy needs of Detroit children.

The program gives away over 100,000 books every year. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with members in a safe environment, while serving the local Detroit community. Volunteers sort and shelf donated books, which are then given to surrounding schools and community projects.

Words from Detroit Kiwanis

The first Kiwanis club was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. Starting with a small group of businessmen, Kiwanis has grown to an international organization of over 550,000 members located in 80 countries throughout the world.

The Detroit club takes the motto of “serving the children of the world” to heart. The club’s signature project is “books for kids”. Started almost 20 years ago, the Detroit Kiwanis club recognized that schools and teachers were struggling to address children’s reading needs. We found that many school and classroom libraries had few, if any books. We also saw that there were few resources available to support literacy outside of the classroom. The project arose from the desire to partner with those targeting childhood literacy needs within schools and the community at-large.

Beginning with schools, the project has expanded to include Head Start programs, libraries and community organizations focusing on childhood literacy. Since its inception, the project has distributed over 1,000,000 books and instructional materials.

The Detroit Kiwanis club also provides campership scholarships to programs serving Detroit youth. Through a dedicated fund, we have provided more than $100,000 in monies since the inception of the program.

The club sponsors two Key Leader clubs; one at Ben Carson High School of Science and Medicine and the other at the Detroit International Academy. We sponsor the Aktion Helping Hands Club which is for developmentally disabled adults and this is the only club in the Detroit metro area.

Finally, we are proud to sponsor the Circle K Club at Wayne State University. Beginning approximately 15 years ago, the Detroit Kiwanis has provided annual financial support for dues and other expenses. We have welcomed Circle K members who have helped with various social events and our signature project. Members attend our luncheon meetings as guests on a regular basis. We hope in these trying times of the pandemic that this partnership will continue.

The WASH Project Our fundraising project this year in partnership with UNICEF is the WASH Project or Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. Clean water, basic toilets and good hygiene practices are essential for the survival and development of children. Today, there are around 2.4 billion people who do not use improved sanitation, and 663 million who do not have access to improved water sources.
