          Everett
Greetings! Doesn’t it feel like we’ve come thru an evolution these past two years? The Covid pandemic has been a major evolution. Think about it: our world hasn’t been thru something like this in a century. We’ve had to change so many aspects of our daily lives, both professional and personal. Looking back, it’s hard to comprehend all that has happened since early March 2020. I strongly believe all of us have traveled so far from those dark days.
This has been central to my role as President of WSNLA in 2022. Being open to the unfolding changes as we step out of a pandemic-focused society. Embrace the growth that comes with change. Look back at 2022 and you’ll realize we’ve evolved. Working with Breanne and Holly, plus the Board, we’ve returned Board Meetings to in-person. Sort of. We now have hybrid meetings. Several people attend the meeting in person, led by our staff, and everyone else remotes into it. It’s been successful, and we’re continuing this evolution into 2023.
We’ve not gathered together regularly since 2019; this needed to change. After considerable discussion we decided to hold two in-person Celebrations of WSNLA’s 85th Anniversary. In September we celebrated at Walrath Landscape Supply in Gig Harbor. What a wonderful evening! A great crowd, delicious food, and wonderful weather out in Walrath’s nursery. The highlight was having our own horticultural icon, Ed Hume, join us. Ed visited everyone, and gave an inspiring talk on WSNLA’s past, and where we can go in the future. OK, as a childhood ‘fanboy’ of Mr. Hume, I was so excited to talk with Ed! And listen to his stories. I wasn’t alone! Since I know he’s reading this: Hello, Ed!
Later in September we had another celebration at Sunnyside Nursery in Marysville. Another great event, although a bit darker and cooler. Thank goodness for their greenhouse where we reconnected with so many peers and friends. The venerable ‘Whistling Gardener’ Steve Smith and the lovely Pauline Smith were our ‘stars’ this evening. There were many sceptics from the crowd about me cooking their dinner. This is something I’ve done for many WALP meetings hosted at Pacific Stone Co. over the years. Let’s just say that a lot of grilled ribs and baked beans were consumed that night! If we repeat these Celebrations in 2023 come join us! I’ll cook again…
It’s been an honor to serve as your President this year. Thank you for reading my words, and thanks to those who responded with personal emails. Working with Breanne and Holly, plus our Executive Board and Board of Directors is rewarding. What a great organization, and wonderful group of the kindest people. Let’s stay the course in 2023. Help us continue to expand, grow, and change the Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association! Cheers, Tim

Legislative Update Protecting & Advocating for Your Business
          Jesse Taylor Taylor Consulting, LLC

    WSNLA Lobbyist
This column is to introduce myself to you, the members of the Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association, as your new lobbyist, taking over for the retired Heather Hansen. This opportunity is one that I am very excited about as I have been involved in this industry and community for the past two decades and my entire adult life. I’m a native of the Puyallup Valley and graduated from Sumner High School. Before attending WSU and earning my B.S. in Agriculture Economics, I was elected, and served a year, as the Washington FFA Vice-President. That experience took me to 37 of our 39 counties as an ambassador for Agriculture Education. Upon graduating from WSU and after three years of teaching high school CTE Ag Science, I joined the office of Senator Mark Schoesler – the Senate Majority Leader- as a full-time staffer. I worked on issues pertaining to Agriculture, Budget and Education. Senator Schoesler is an Adams County wheat farmer and cattleman who served as our state’s Senate Majority Leader from 2013-2017.
After serving Senator Schoesler for five years, I formed Taylor Consulting LLC to offer legislative representation focusing on Agriculture and Education. I also serve as the Director of the Washington FFA Foundation. In these capacities I am able to stay plugged in to the issues of the day and stay apprised of the needs of our industry - from the greenhouse to the field, and from the classroom to the committee hearing room.
Like you all, I believe that independent businesses are the backbone of commerce in America, and our industry is worth defending. In Washington State 9 out of 10 producers are small family enterprises, but we don’t always have the loudest voice. I take pride in the fact that the WSNLA has a mission of offering a voice to the businesses of all sizes in our industry. And I believe that our anecdotal experience through honest voices needs to be the adjunct weaponry to our displays of product and toil. With your support I will work in that fashion to support the needs of the WSNLA membership.
I live in Yelm, WA with my wife and two kids on our small farm with cows, horses, chickens and goats.
          Looking Forward
This coming session there are many things we will be keeping our eye on. Big topics for 2023 will be labor and worker hours, business tax structure, chemical applications/ inputs, Urban Planning/Green Space regulation, and all other matters that will impact our growers, wholesalers or retailers. By having a voice and presence on the ground at the legislature we are able to effectively steer legislation and do no harm for our members. I like to say we are either at the table or we are on the menu. I plan to be at the table for you all as we navigate the many proposed policy changes that will come with this long session. Legislative session will begin on Monday January 9th, 2023 and Sine Di adjournment is scheduled for April 23rd. Please reach out to me with any questions or thoughts as things come up during the legislative session. I can be reached at Jesse@ wsnla.org. I look forward to working with you!
WSNLA’s business membership includes a diverse community of large and small growers, garden centers, landscape professionals and suppliers. It is the intent of WSNLA Board of Directors to ensure legislative activities focus in on overarching WSNLA member needs, while effectively balancing the diversity in business scale and location. To that extent, the following priorities have been identified, with member input, to guide and strengthen WSNLA legislative and regulatory activities throughout the State.
WASHINGTON STATE NURSERY & LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

          • Working in a bipartisan manner and focusing on results.
          • Ensuring policies are reasonable and based on sound science.
WSNLA will coordinate with other affiliated professional organizations to support our members on agricultural and environmental issues such as:

          • Urban planning and the inclusion of green spaces
          • Pesticide regulation
          • Open space taxation
On general business issues, WSNLA will focus on impact to members. Such issues include but are not limited to:

          • Taxes

2023 is all about growing our roots - Plants, People & Passion!
          Chavez WSNLA Executive Director

2023 is all about growing our roots - Plants, People & Passion!
With our mission of supporting your success in mind, the WSNLA Board of Directors, committees and volunteers are working to guide programs, develop resources, shape advocacy and bring you together with your peers in 2023. Please consider getting involved!
The WSNLA ‘Plant a Career in Horticulture’ task force has been diligently working a 3-part plan to promote careers in horticulture, including building stronger relationships with horticulture programs at colleges and universities across the state; participating in career events at WSU, University of Idaho & UW; and working with a video production contractor to ‘Tell the Story’ of career opportunities, success and fullfillment. If this is a topic you are interested in, we would love to have you join the committee or help get out this message.
This year, the online PROseries line-up will continue to expand. Steering committees for the Certified Professional Horticulturist and ecoPRO Certified Sustainable Landscape Professional certification programs are focused on cultivating the certified communities, improving communication, and promoting the value of the CPH and EPC designations to consumers. Learn more about what’s coming for both of WSNLA’s certification programs in 2023. (Certified Professional Horticulturist - page 23 and ecoPRO Certified - page 25.)
The GardenWashington brand, which includes the printed Guide and GardenWashington. com, continues to grow as a consumer resource. WSNLA received a 3-year marketing grant to promote ‘Plant Something Pollinator Friendly’. Funds will work to develop a pollinator resource page and a hub for pollinator focused member blogs on the site. Working with a creative firm, video and social media content will be developed to encourage consumers to Plant Something Pollinator Friendly. We would love to have you be a part of this fun campaign. If this is a topic you, or a staff member, are passionate about, please join the committee overseeing grant objectives.

FindPlantsPNW.com is your business to business resources, accessible via your computer, tablet or smart phone, for sourcing wholesale plants, products and services needed to do business.
WSNLA’s advocacy continues. If you were not able to attend the virtual Advocacy Update session in December, please turn to page 5 to meet our new lobbyist, Jesse Taylor. As we begin the 2023 Legislative Session, be sure to review your weekly legislative update and provide feedback on issues of concern or support.
Getting involved is easier now than it ever has been before! If not you, is there someone in your business that may be interested? I encourage you to visit www.WSNLA.org/GetInvolved or email me at breanne@wsnla.org. We need your voice!

Peer to Peer Insight 2023 Outlook Concerns & Opportunties
Addision Gregory, Chief Operating Officer, shares his thoughts about concerns and opportunities for 2023.
What are your plant supply concerns?

Trees, shrubs and roses were the most challenging when it came to availability this past year. I think that will continue as most of that product takes longer to produce.
Do you have concerns about your pot & container supply?
Same as last year. Long lead times, price increases, etc.. We have had to transition to some different pot types/sizes to accommodate our needs.
What other product concerns do you have?
Carrying over expensive inventory! We have started to see some pricing going down with a decrease in ocean freight and shipping, which means the inventory we are currently holding onto is at a higher cost. It is important that we move on from the expensive inventory.
          Where are your labor concerns?
Entry level positions are still challenging. We haven’t necessarily had issues finding people, but the turnover in some of those positions has been high. We have tried to stay ahead of the wage pressures.
Do you have economic climate concerns:
1st - 3rd quarter we were slightly up 1%, but 4th quarter we have started to lose ground and notice that in our daily transaction count. We are not keeping pace with 2021, but still ahead of 2020 and 2019. I do think retail is softening a little bit and we have been forecasting flat or slightly below in most categories for next year.
          Other concerns?
Houseplants! Have we hit the growth plateau? The category seems to be normalizing after tremendous amounts of growth the past 5 years.
As we enter 2023, what opportunities are you most excited about?
We are taking over the cafe at our Puyallup location, which we currently lease. It will be fun to integrate it more with our brand. We will be launching our Qualified Partners program for landscape contractors and designers this Spring as well. Stay tuned for more information on that.
Are there other thoughts you would like to share?
Everyone has had 3 great years and do we think that is the new “norm” or do we revert back to pre 2020? I think it’s probably something in between, so we have to keep adding or looking for new opportunities for growth to maintain this type of sales volume.

2023 Garden Trends Report: I Believe In Me!

     by Garden Media Group
    by Garden Media Group

The two driving forces of the moment: the individual and access. If individuality is self-expression, then access is self-reliance. The 90’s were about me, the early 2000’s Treat Yo’Self and self-care (or self-indulgence), and 2023 is self-reliance. We’re fighting to establish ourselves in a crazy, mixed-up world. We’re educating ourselves on how to create a life that represents us, meets our needs, and reduces our dependency on people and systems. Reliance on the self is the only certainty.
2023 will be about personal empowerment. We got through COVID, grew our own food, what can’t we do?! So, with only ourselves to answer to, our lifestyles need to serve and reflect who we are. We learned we can’t control external things. We can control what we do, what we think, and what we buy. Now is the time to take responsibility for the materials we use, how stuff is produced, how we buy and consume, and the values we buy into. We’re entering a spiritual renaissance of enlightenment. We are looking inward, embracing maximalism and cocooning ourselves in experiences and things most sacred... to us.
We are creating personal brands. This is shown in the popularity of herbalism with an emphasis on home medicine, trendy kitchen gardens, urban vegetable production, and a call to utilize raw, natural materials.
Rooted in intention, this plea for the individual and access is essential to shared humanity as we settle into the notion that we are all we’ve got. Find a peek of Garden Media Group’s 2023 Garden Trends on the next page. To download the complete report, including more trends, visit www.gardenmediagroup. com.

Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association - 9
We are in the middle of a housing shortage. Inventory has fallen from a monthly average of 1.6 million units in 2019 to 1 million in 2022. Buyers are being priced out. Home values have risen 32% in the past two years. And, with home buying out of reach for many, demand for rentals is going up in mid-size and small cities.
The missing ‘middle’ of the housing market. According to Forbes, who coined last year, the ‘Year of the ADU’, accessory dwelling units (ADUs) would help alleviate these shortages. And local government is starting to see the benefit, too. Approvals are becoming easier to obtain.
          Privacy is key.
Small space design and container garden searches reach new highs on Google Trends each season. Consider how you can position your products to suit this Backdoor Revolution.
In 2023 and Beyond, 100 is the new 50. We are entering an era of ‘Super Agers’ people whose brains function as if they were 30 years younger. As we focus on efforts on attracting millenials, don’t forget boomers too.

People are nostalgic, finding comfort in familiar pursuits and products from decades past.
Down Aging boomers are determined to stay as active as possible. It’s not just gardening or golf; they’re hiring robo-companions and attending Senior summer camps. Millennials are Down Aging, too. Brands who tug at the nostalgic heart-strings of Down-Agers will win their business. Enact a throwback logo for an anniversary, revive a best-seller, or relaunch a product with a smart spin.
We have an entirely new customer in this loyal generation.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture first published the hardiness zone map in 1960. Since the map was last updated in 2012, nearly half the country is at least half a zone warmer. Researchers believe the lines will continue to march northward at a “climate velocity” of 13 miles per decade. In the worst-case scenario, by the end of the century, Earth’s climate is projected to warm by an additional 11°F.
As the climate changes, trees find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.
Trees are green infrastructure that contributes to climate change resilience through the ecosystem services they provide. New studies prove this efficacy. One study by Princeton University shows reforestation produces clouds that protect the planet from the sun’s rays.
          TikTok
TikTok users spend an average of 52 minutes per day on the app. 90% visit the app more than once per day. And there are over 1 billion monthly active users. And it’s not just dance videos. People are turning to TikTok for financial education, investing tips, cooking hacks, book recommendations, and garden advice.

PlantTok is fueled by those looking to create unique spaces that speak to their identity.

Community commerce is an opportunity for brands to fit seamlessly into people’s digital experience.
According to Great Grow Along, 85% purchase products or services after seeing them reviewed on social and 79% take gardening advice from online sources. The way consumers discover and purchase products has changed.

The CPH program continues to seek ways to increase our outreach and availability geographically throughout the state. We have held our most recent plant ID certification exams in Mount Vernon, Kirkland and in Puyallup to make them more convenient to attend regardless of locations. We have plans to go to other parts of the state as well. Holly has been hosting virtual written exams in addition to our in-person plant ID, which allows CPH candidates to take the test in a comfortable environment as well as for us to utilize advanced metrics and analytics which will assist in evaluating how to improve the test, making it as fair and accurate as possible in evaluating the competencies of the prospective CPH candidates.
The CPH Steering committee is meeting on a regular basis and is focusing on refining CPH engagement and outreach. The following are a few of the innovations we are working on.
The CPH Level 1 program is continuing to introduce horticulture to high school students. We are blessed to have committee members with higher tech IQs and knowledge of the latest IT developments. We are planning to utilize social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, as well as interactive platforms such as Reddit and Meetup. We will be establishing dedicated hashtags to use across all platforms and WSNLA communications to build community engagement and increase visibility and impact. It is felt that an active virtual presence will be a more effective way to reach younger professionals and students than more traditional print media. We are also looking at ways to utilize podcasts and YouTube to feature horticultural content from our CPH members to display our horticultural expertise and virtuosity and to increase our exposure to the greater gardening public.

We are also discussing ways to incorporate our existing membership by continuing to feature member profiles as well as membership surveys to learn more about what our current membership is most interested in. It has been noted that professionals tend to get the certification and then fade away from WSNLA involvement when they could be benefiting from increased networking and helping to raise the level of excellence of the CPH program and WSNLA. Taking the Certified Professional Horticulturist exam should be the first step in involvement in our organization, not the last! We are committed to increasing both new and existing membership engagement.

Technical Committee Chair WA State Department of Transportation
          ecoPRO in 2022 and Beyond
Hello everyone, I’m Ray Willard a landscape architect for the Washington State Department of Transportation and current chair of the Technical Advisory Committee. I got to start thinking about this program with Gwen Vernon and the team from Cascadia Consulting Group over ten years ago and have had the honor of serving with a group of very dedicated and talented professionals since then to bring the program to where it is today. Our program to certify sustainable landscape design and management is still in the early stages of what we hope will be a decades-long legacy, but it is already serving as an example to the rest of the country. With ecoPRO we are setting the bar on how our industry can provide sustainable solutions for making our buildings and roads more economically viable and at the same time providing climate resilience, environmental mitigation, and enhancing our American culture and society.
This is a very exciting program to be a part of and I am confident we will continue to build in numbers in the years to come. My goal in working with Breanne and the WSNLA is to make ecoPRO the new normal for how we build and maintain our landscape assets in Washington State. Everyone who joins the program will be responsible for spreading this message and it will be easy to do if we stick to the facts and show that we are out to make the world a more affordable and better place – one sustainable site at a time.
Thank you to everyone who has already joined us and if you haven’t yet, please consider this as a piece of your company or organization’s professional development. I would encourage everyone to check out what we have on the ecoPRO website. There you can find additional information and resources for how you or your employees can benefit from this program, and we are always looking for case study examples of how taking a sustainable life-cycle based management approach with landscape architecture saves money and makes people happy. If you would like to contribute to this resource base, please download the form at www.ecoPROcertified.org/Resources.
