“To get the outcome after applying was amazing because a lot of people go into it expecting to be rejected only to try it again next year,” she says.

“I’ve always looked up to Judi Dench and their programme, the school is so beautiful and it was a very easy decision to accept it.”

Sofia only started considering drama school two years ago.

“It was something that was mentioned to me when we were doing a school play and after a while I got a little fixated on it and really got stuck into some research about what schools were out there.

“I came up with a list of schools and presented them to my parents who were both really supportive and Mountview was at the top of that list.

“I thought that if I didn’t get in I had to knuckle down and pursue university and economics in New Zealand and do acting on the side.”

Sofia says she was quite an introverted child but she tried

theatre at the age of four.

“My older brother did a performing arts after school programme and as a way to get me out of the house they put me in it with him.

“The first performance I was in, he was a main character and I thought it so cool and the fact you got to wear costumes and make-up was really great.

So I did that twice a week for six years.”

Sofia says she was focusing on her academic studies and was not acting at all when she started at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School as a Year 9 student.

However, it was when she got a lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar at the end of Year 10 and that she caught the acting bug once again and never let go.

“As a child I wanted to be a singer and I guess I’ve found a way to make that a reality on

Roy Stansfield, General Manager Shopping Centres, Stride Property Group, asked yesterday about any developments with the Johnsonville Shopping Centre redevelopment in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, says there is little to add to the comments made at the end of last year.

He repeats that they are still excited about the potential of the centre which, he says, has the attributes needed to create a contemporary, high-quality retail centre that will be an asset to the local community.

He adds however, that as with any proposed development,

Stride and its investors have several hurdles to overcome before it can be confirmed that the development will proceed.

“Any commitment will be subject to commercial feasibility, securing relevant approvals and achieving leasing pre-commitment targets.”

The growth projections for the area and its location are among the compelling reasons why Stride has been reviewing redevelopment options.

The company and its investors are in regular talks with tenants about the plans for the centre’s future.

In the eye of the city’s economic storm

For Diane Calvert, the highest-polling councillor in last year’s Wellington City Council election, the role of Economic Development portfolio leader was always going to be challenging.

The second-term Onslow-Western Wharangi Ward councillor had been touted as a possible Deputy Mayor, but as an Independent in what turned out to be a Labour/Green dominated council, that didn’t happen.

Instead, given her background in business, she took up a number of senior roles which include chairing the Finance, Audit and Risk sub-committee and the Finance Working Party. With the profound economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on life as we know it, she now finds herself at the centre of a maelstrom of changes and problems.

Diane says, however, she is very impressed by the collaborative approach that Wellington businesses are showing, despite being competitors.

“We’re in a very good position,” she says, adding that the burden of the Level 4 lockdown crisis was borne mainly by the

hospitality and retail sectors.

“They’ve sacrificed a lot for our country.”

And she’s impressed by the way the city’s business improvement and development groups are promoting local businesses.

However, there is some straight talking.

“We have a worsening situation looming,” she says.

With other long-standing issues like earthquake resilience and an aging and fragile water infrastructure the city’s businesses and workers are, she adds, facing a difficult time.

Because of the high percentage of Wellington workers in the Public Service we have, she points out, been in a “false lull”, insulated from the worst of the economic effects felt by businesses and workers in other parts of the country.

“So a lot of people still think that things will just soon get back to normal.”

“But they won’t.

“Once the wage subsidy runs out, things will get worse.”

In addition, Wellington faces still-emerging costs and choices following the 2016 earthquake, including the need for strengthening or replacement of many of Wellington’s iconic

buildings.

Not least amongst those is the city library - and in recent weeks the carillon has been added to the list. Like most Wellingtonians, Diane says she is disappointed with the deserted spaces of Civic Square..

And the multi-million dollar scale of the problem with the city’s aging water pipes is only just being realised, while planning for the future can’t stop either.

There are already some bitterly-debated choices being discussed this week and next as the council hears submitters on the 2021 annual plan.

With six of the thirteen new councillors being first timers bringing cherished beliefs and projects to the table, Diane says more work is needed on the difficult choices and compromises to be made.

It’s goodbye from Glenise…

During that time I’ve been overwhelmed

Community representatives, leaders and volunteers of all ages put in countless hours making life better here, providing the glue that holds everything together.

I know you’ll offer my replacement, Jacob Page, the same help and support you’ve given me.

I envy him as he gets to know you, and records the countless stories that continually demonstrate this community’s drive and your kindness to each other.

Jacob, 30, has been a journalist for the past 12 years having worked for publications in Christchurch, Timaru, Blenheim and Nelson.

The Warehouse Johnsonville is facing the axe as part of a nationwide cull at The Warehouse Group.

Johnsonville Warehouse part of proposed cuts The Johnsonville Warehouse is set to be closed as the company try to become ”more agile” going forward.

The Warehouse Group is proposing to cut its staff count by at least 1000 roles across New Zealand and at its head office.

In an NZX announcement on Monday, the country’s largest listed retail company said it

was moving to an agile business model.

“The proposed changes to our footprint consider factors including proximity to our other stores, shopping habits of those in the area, store profitability and lease arrangements.

The group will continue to assess its store network and has flexibility in its lease renewal

profile with approximately onequarter of its network coming up for renewal within the next 15 months,” Warehouse Group chief executive Nick Grayston said in the market announcement.

The company said the proposals would see approximately 700-950 roles or 410 fewer full-time equivalent store roles

BNZ Karori closure “sign of the times”

The BNZ at the Karori Mall has closed permanently.

There was a note on the entrance to the branch last Thursday informing customers it would not be re-opening.

“In recent years there has been a significant decline in demand for in-branch banking services at BNZ’s Karori branch,” the note read.

“As a result, this branch is

permanently closed and will not reopen.”

Customers were directed to online banking methods and the Johnsonville branch as their new nearest location.

The closure was in the works as of last month as BNZ looked to shut some city-based branches in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Karori Residents Association chairperson Andrea Skews says the outcome is the reality of the

times.

“BNZ closing is indicative of the changing environment around banking and other services in regards to people versus electronic,” she says.

“KRA have been communicating with the mall owners (Foodstuffs) regularly to update the community on plans for the future and Foodstuffs are interested in hearing feedback around what the community would like to see in the mall

Grayston said the impact from Covid-19 over the past couple of months had “made it even more clear that Agile is the right model for the group”.

Metlink fares set to return in July Metlink has announced that full fares will return across the region on July 1 now that New Zealand has moved to alert level 1 and physical distancing restrictions have been lifted.

Fares, including the handling of cash, were temporarily suspended to support the Government’s public health response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

General manager Scott Gallacher says Metlink has been working very closely with the Government on the safest and fairest time to reintroduce full fares to passengers across the region.

“Reintroducing fares in July makes sense following New Zealand’s excellent response to COVID-19 and the

recent removal of physical distancing measures under alert level 1. Our passengers, drivers, staff on trains and at station kiosks can now safely and confidently interact again,” Scott says.

Advice from the Ministry of Health has confirmed it is safe to handle cash, provided this is done responsibly.

Good hand hygiene remains essential, with passengers and staff continuing to wash or sanitise their hands as soon as they can during, before and after travel.

“We’re asking passengers to use contactless payments wherever possible. That means Snapper on buses, monthly passes or 10-trip tickets on trains, and eftpos on the ferries.

Where cash needs to be used we’re

encouraging people to use exact change to reduce any unnecessary handling,” Scott says.

Metlink continue to work with Snapper on reviewing the coverage of Snapper kiosks across the region.

A Snapper App for Android phones is available, and an iPhone app is being launched within the next month or so.

Monthly and 10-trip train tickets will be for sale from train station ticket windows from Monday June 22.

A rail monthly pass or 10-trip tickets are good ways to save money.

Metlink continues to follow advice from the Government on robust cleaning, distancing and fare collection practices to keep passengers and staff safe.

Richard Stephenson, Director of Development and Property for BUPA Health and Care, says that despite being shut down for five to six weeks, the construction of their retirement village and rest home in Churchill Drive, Crofton Downs, is going well.

“As soon as we went into Level 3, the contractors were right back into it,” he says, estimating there are about 10 there at the moment.

The target for completion remains in the third quarter of 2021. “Between August and October.

“Within eight months we’ll

probably have about 120 workers on site,” he adds.

The facility, with its “spectacular” views, will have a 49-bed care facility and a range of accommodation options in the 80-85 independent living apartments on site.

Richard isn’t expecting any market reaction to the Covid-19 crisis in the aged care industry, which he feels has come out of the crisis pretty well.

“It’s actually given the industry a shot in the arm.

They’ve done a fantastic job.”

Care facilities had been shown to be a lot safer than they could have been, he said.

5 ways to make your house a home!

Hey everyone! Happy Level 1! We’ve had the chance to catch up with many of our local friends in the community and we have, to the joy of nagging partners locally, seen some improvements to their homes. But one thing was clear, through spending dedicated time in lockdown, people were needing to make their house a home. Here are some easy ways we’ve seen!

1. Experiment with Colour – If you are not planning on selling any time soon, play around with colours! Go for that feature wall or wallpaper. If you love yellow, you go yellow! Life is to be enjoyed! There are some theories that by being visually stimulated by certain colours, it will improve certain mental attributes!

2. Smells – I found myself during lockdown digging into the deep abyss of the bathroom cupboard and finding a multitude of neglected scented things. I have always been a neutral scent kind of guy, but after enjoying bath bombs, scented candles and air fresheners, I’m a changed man! Find scents you love, and it’ll add another dimension to your home.

3. Music – One thing I particularly love, is coming home, and flicking on all the speakers in the house from my phone and being surrounded by music I enjoy! Talking to my friend who works at a tech store, surprisingly one of the most purchased items pre-lockdown were sound systems / speakers. Music is a wonderful way to uplift your mood and bring joy to your home! My favourite is acoustics covers!

4. Maximise Light – During lockdown it was no surprise that some people really struggled with the lack of Vitamin D. For us we worked right

through lockdown, and we’ve grown to value the importance of sunlight in the house. Have a morning sun & afternoon sun work spot. The dining table is a great workspace, just make sure your chair is at the right height. Can trim some trees back - do it!

5. Simplify the Garden - This was something that most people did during lockdown. So often with all the houses we sell, the #1 thing people stress about their homes, is the garden. If you don’t have time, invest in a landscaper / gardener and get them to simplify your garden with lower maintenance areas, weed mats, and easy-care plants – take back your weekends!

With all that is happening around the world, we are so fortunate to be living in NZ and in this community. For most of us, what is happening is a reality check on how precious life and livelihoods can be. Life continuously shows us that we are never in control. Life is full of surprises, lessons, experiences, and pain, but it is also full of love, joy, and exciting possibilities.

Make your house a home! Live how you want to!

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a red and green Waste Management wheelie bin, located overnight behind the garage of a house in Tarawera Road, was stolen.

Small fires were lit at McDonalds in Johnsonville. A group of youths was recorded on CCTV footage which has been viewed by Police.

In Newlands a play station with games and a laptop charger were

stolen from a house in Bracken Road. There was no break in involved.

A mountain bike left at a school in Bracken Road after school hours was stolen.

A blue Toyota Wish stationwagon parked overnight in Baylands Drive had the lug nuts of two of the wheels loosened and three lug nuts from a third wheel were actually removed.

The victim did not discover this until driving the vehicle.

In Broadmeadows a male was seen late at night trying to remove the registration plates from a silver Holden Commodore saloon which was parked in the enclosed yard of a house in John Sims Drive.

The offender departed in a waiting vehicle. A description has been passed to Police.

In Karori the owner of a house undergoing renovation left a set of house keys in a key locker box for the use of tradesmen working there.

Someone stole the box with the keys inside it.

In Northland a high value mountain bike was stolen from a parking building in the apartment complex.

The bike had been secured with a lock which was left behind, appar-

ently cut through with bolt cutters.

In Wilton the stand-alone garage of a house in Pembroke Road was entered and searched.

The victim had taken the precaution of strengthening the door with a piece of timber but this was not sufficient to prevent entry. Items within the garage had been moved around but nothing is reported stolen.

St Ninian’s re-opens St Ninian’s Uniting Parish in Karori, like most churches nationwide, was delighted to re-open for services and facility users again last Sunday June 7.

The church has been supporting the people of Karori for over 100 years, and the Covid-19 lockdown didn’t slow its members down for long.

Ross Marks has attended the church for 30 years, and said that it was quick to adapt, providing regular online services over Zoom.

He had nothing but praise for the hard work of St Ninian’s minister Rev Hana Popea-Dell, who put together the online services from her bubble at home with assistance from her husband, Police Chaplain David Dell.

She provided support and prayer for members of the community during this time.

“People were scared. It was a

frightening time, and they needed spiritual support,” she said.

Several St Ninian’s members also kept busy during lockdown providing support to the community.

Angela Warren volunteers at the Karori Foodbank, which had to shut over lockdown, but she liaised with the Wellington City Mission to ensure people in Karori were able to get the help they needed.

And Paul Stephenson, who coordinates the Karori Sportsbank among his many roles, was ready to spring into action as soon as Level Two was announced.

St Ninian’s re-opened to an enthusiastic crowd, with Ross saying that with the social distancing requirements, services may look different for a while.

But for the parishioners of St Ninian’s, their commitment to the community remains the same.

Chester’s global fame

During lockdown, Cooper Street became a real destination point for Karori residents out for their daily walk.

Chester the Bear and his daily exploits during the national Bear Hunt, which has provided points of interest for children on their daily walk, went wider when Radio NZ picked up his “good news” story. They also pasted a photo on their website.

Then it was all on – BBC children’s TV picked his story and photo up as well.

Chester’s story began one sunny afternoon during lockdown when his dad (better known as Ken Wilson) was up a ladder painting the garage lintel.

“Pot of paint, brush, ladder,” says

Ken. “But I got very bored. So I went and got Chester – he’s quite a big bear. I gave him a paint brush and a pot of paint and attached him to the ladder with a bungee cord.”

Ken left him there for the afternoon, and there were so many comments that next day he provided him with hedge clippers and set him to work on the neighbour’s hedge.

The idea grew. Every day for over five weeks, Chester had some other activity in the front of Ken and Shirley’s house.

The couple would sit down every afternoon about 3pm and think about Chester’s next escapade, some quite topical. They’d be out in the carport at 5.45am the next morning setting him up.

“It was very much a combined ef-

fort,” says Ken. “And we’d hear the kids coming as they wondered what he would be up to today.”

One that struck gold came when Winston Peters was pictured fishing on the bank of the river flowing through his back yard, with Beau his dog and his horse.

Next day Chester was out fishing in a bucket, accompanied by Pinto the rocking horse.

The ‘I Love Karori’ Facebook page has featured him, with comments like ‘A Karori legend ‘.

Like any superstar, he’s even had fan mail says Ken. One came after the notice that he was being put into hi-bear-nation.

“Now our walks are pointless!” wrote one sad and sorry young admirer.

City’s new normal is up and running As the country celebrates moving to Alert Level 1 this week, Wellington City Council’s services and facilities are resuming normal operations.

Though there will still be contact tracing where necessary, most restrictions are lifted so everyone can return to the new normal in work, school and play – and Wellington council is ready for it says Mayor Andy Foster.

Dan’s return a darn good thing Dan Carter playing rugby in New Zealand again is nothing but positive for the game.

As a fully patched one-eyed Cantabrian, I have no issue with him signing with the Blues late last week.

Sadly, I think that puts me in the minority of my red and black brethren, with many labelling it treason

after his stellar Crusaders career was confirmed to not have a second act.

Carter is 38-years-old and well and truly in the twilight of his professional career.

His value is as much, if not more, in the top two inches as it is his in his playing ability.

He has a young family and is based in Auckland.

It is only common sense for him to play for the Blues at this point.

The fact Crusaders’ fans are getting upset is absurd.

They got the best 15 years of his career.

The Blues are getting his last gasp, a gasp that would not be happening had it not been for a global pandemic called Coronavirus.

Carter can now mentor some of our emerging national talent.

Personally, I hope he mentors Beauden Barrett with his goal kicking because it is extremely concerning to someone like me who puts high value on a quality kicker which Carter is and Barrett currently is not.

Carter is a top five All Black of all

time and arguments can be made for him as positions one through four on that list.

Anything he can offer to anyone with a playing future in New Zealand and the black jersey must be soaked up like a sponge.

I hope he has a great Super Rugby campaign - just perhaps not against the Crusaders.

Mixed results for North Wellington as football returns

Community footballers breathed a collective sigh of relief on Saturday when competitive football returned to Wellington, albeit two months later than anticipated.

After what has been the longest pre-season build up in history, good ground conditions and fine weather combined to make for enjoyable matches for all youth and adult teams throughout the region.

It was a case of mixed fortunes

for North Wellington Football’s top senior teams.

Thanks to two goals each from Nicky Ingham and Ashleigh Mason, the newly promoted Innkeeper Johnsonville Women’s W League side ended up with a comfortable 4-0 win over Stop Out in the local regional knock out competition; the Kelly Cup. They advance through to the semi finals but the same cannot be said for the also newly promoted Innkeeper Johnsonville Women’s

Premier League side who were outplayed by a strong performance from Victoria University who won 8-0.

In the Men’s Central League it was anything but a happy occasion for the New World Newlands North Wellington team who faced Stop Out in a pre-season friendly match.

The Johnsonville based team was on the receiving end of a comprehensive 8-0 thrashing and will clearly have to step things up significantly for their first match

next weekend at Western Suburbs.

The weekend finished with smiles all round in the Men’s Premier League when the Newlands Arms North Wellington side prevailed 2-1 in a tough encounter over Wellington Olympic at Alex Moore Park.

It was as fine a game of football as you could ever hope to see with both sides deploying a talented array of youngsters who showed no fear and put on a master class of possession based football, complete with skilful athleticism.

The fact that the majority of these youngsters were making their premier league debut in no way phased them with newcomers Jayson Gerbes and Riley Manuel playing exceptionally well and earning a tick each on the score sheet. The free kick goal from Manuel a million miles outside the goal box foxed everyone to make the final 10 minutes of the match more comfortable for North Wellington than could have been imagined.

Johnsonville rugby ready for June 20 kick-off

Johnsonville Rugby Football Club chairperson Blair Hannah is eager to get that winning feeling back into the club this season.

The Johnsonville premier team, which went winless last season will begin their Swindale Shield campaign next weekend away from home against Petone.

Blair says his club supported playing a 13-week Swindale Shield followed by a two week finals format rather than a truncated season.

The 13 week Swindale Shield allows each club to play each other once this season in a full round-robin to determine seedings for the two weeks final format.

The club that tops the Swindale Shield at

the end of the 13 weeks will be awarded the Swindale Shield.

In a slight twist to normal, Clubs will be divided into four finals depending on their seedings after the Swindale Shield.

“We were supportive of playing a longer competition,” he says.

“Sure, that always raises questions around depth and funds but we were supportive of it.

“Potentially we’ll be playing up until September 26 which is really deep into the season compared to normal.”

Blair says the players will be in good condition but it may not be rugby condition given the Coronavirus outbreak.

“The boys have been putting in four sessions a week trying to get ready.

“We usually have a two to three month preseason as opposed to the four to six

weeks we’ve had this time.

“It’s a stepping stone this year.

“We don’t want to be too hard on ourselves but we want to be competitive,” he says.

“If you look at last year, there wasn’t a game won by our premiers so that’s a disappointing year.

“We want to go out there and get some scalps which we are confident of doing.

He says the club will be working with sponsors as the financial impact hits “We have to work with the people who have supported us because many of them have been impacted by what has happened with Coronavirus and we’re committed to doing that.

Premier reserves will also start on June 20 with Colts the following week and the presidents grade still up in the air.
