Bruce Johnston is the heart and soul of the very organisation to which he once thought he did not truly belong.

Last week Bruce, 87, was elected president of the Karori Returned and Services (RSA) for the 25th consecu-

tive year.

“I always felt guilty because I was a serviceman but I was never a returned serviceman… I wasn’t that sure they (RSA) wanted people like me,” he says.

“I felt like a bit of a fraud to begin with.”

Bruce Johnston keeps fighting for future of RSA Continued from page 1 Bruce says his passion for the RSA cannot go on forever but he is determined it has a place in the community.

“It’s been a labour of love, really,” he says.

“I was hoping to get somebody else to come onboard but I haven’t had any luck.

Bruce joined the army at 24 and left at 41.

“When I took over we had 45 members and I’ve built that up to about 115 at its peak but it’s getting harder, we aren’t getting the young people of the services.

“This year we are down to 103.

“I got a lot of support from sons and daughters of returned service people and I was able to pull them in,” he says.

“I’m afraid to let it go because some of the older ones have said if I go then they’ll leave as well.”

“But now, at my age, I suffer from a lack of contacts, they’re dying and without permission I might add,” he jokes.

“I just want to keep the place going,” he says. “I don’t want it to die if I can help it.”

Bruce says there is a level of disappointment he hasn’t been

able to find a successor.

“Young people have families and I can’t expect someone nowadays to go down to a Club every Friday night.

“The reality is that we drink more tea and ginger beer now more than anything else.

“It’s no longer the haunt of the drinkers, they go to the pub now.”

Bruce laments that some of the older former soldiers never spoke of their experiences in war to pass the stories, both good and bad, down to the next generation.

“Sadly, children only heard about what Dad did in various wars when he was being buried.

“The fact that the Karori RSA is the only one still going in Wellington does make me proud but I’m facing age myself because I’m not meeting the same people I can influence.

“The community needs to keep the Club going.

“We used to play bowls but half of us can’t get down anymore but we have a movie night, and play dominos, some like to play cards and I still enjoy everyone’s company,” Karori RSA president Bruce Johnston and Wellington Mayor, Andy Bruce says.”

You may have seen a story about a local brothel operating in a residential street. The law is that a person living in the house can operate a small business with up to four people. In this case there are 20 sex workers operating out of the house, with more than four at any one time.

This results in considerable traffic, parking, and disturbing behaviour, and on behalf of locals, I am working with the council ensure the brothel is operating within the law and rules.

The local’s main concerns are what happens outside the house as much as what goes on inside.

The Johnsonville School fruit and vegetable market and the Newlands Fire Brigade are ongoing issues, and keeping both operating is a priority, along with school maintenance and rebuilding at both Newlands and Onslow Colleges.

Mini mara space and mural

Over the past eight weeks, staff from the Zealandia's learning team have been working in collaboration with rangatahi and staff from the Karori Youth Centre, on their first community partnership project.

Across the past two months they facilitated sessions and have supported the group of young people aged 13-17 to enhance their knowledge of the natural world and te ao Māori, through looking at Zealandia’s work and its impact on their local community.

The sessions were designed to allow the young people to create a physical response to their new knowledge and

understanding.

The group chose to design and create a mini garden and mural for the entrance space to their building, as a way to continue to build and share their learning.

The project has just finished up and a celebration at the Karori Youth Centre was held as an opportunity for the young people who have participated in the project to share their hard work with family and friends as they officially open the new mini māra space and mural.

Zealandia's Cat Ayres says the idea was born out of a Zoom chat during lock-down and they had been looking to involve youth in a project and Alex Powell from the Karori Youth Centre was integral to the success of the pilot.

Election Meeting in Karori The Wellington Central candidates public meeting earlier planned for 27 August will now be held at the Karori Baptist Church, Marsden Village, Karori, on Thursday 1 October, from 7pm to 9.30pm.

Spring Festival coming up The annual Spring Festival is based at Wellington Botanic Garden amongst the tulip display in September. The event runs from September 26 to October 11. There will be a series of springtime events where people can celebrate a new season with friends, family, and visitors.

Newlands Park upgrade set to begin in December

The upgrade of Newlands Park is set to begin in December.

The Wellington City Council is searching for a contractor to do the work, having put the project out for tender last week.

Construction is planned for December through to August next year and will take a phased approach.

Installation of the walking/exercise track around the playing field has now been completed.

A traffic survey and study of Newlands Road through the park interface has been completed.

This has led to some changes to the design of the main entrance to the lower area of the park.

The design work has now been completed.

Newlands Park was identified as a redevelopment opportunity as part of the Northern Reserves Management Plan in 2008.

Outcomes will include creating a community play space adjacent to the skate park.

Great care for fallen Gulls Last week, Johnsonville’s Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust, experienced a moment of déjà vu, when they received a call alerting them that several seagulls had again been found dead or flailing for their lives on Kāpiti Coast’s, Waikawa beach.

Local Waikawa resident, Beverley Dowling, and Hayden James from the Lower Hutt Kererū Rescue have been on the frontline at both rescue missions. “Although not as apocalyptic as the last time when the birds were dropping from the sky, it is distressing to see that this has happened again, with no conclusive reason as to why. All we can do is care for the ones who have survived”, said Beverley.

This is where the Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust comes in. They are currently treating 13 of these gulls for suspected poisoning; which leaves the gulls with symptoms of paralysis.

Based on the last event, when the Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust cared for over 30 sick gulls; the likely course of treatment for the birds will be about

four weeks, after which the goal is to return them to their colony.

“Treating these gorgeous gulls involves intensive medication and care. It is estimated that they will eat their way through approximately $2100 worth of tinned sardines, and then there is the care and medication costs on top” – Craig Shepherd, WBRT. The Ministry of Primary Industries has collected a few of the dead birds for post-mortem and toxicology testing, at Massey University Wildbase. A spokesperson from the ministry made this statement, “Despite a thorough investigation last time, the cause of the event was never established. We cannot say at this time if the two events are connected in any way.

Thurleigh Orchard looks to plant roots

James Firestone is keen to put the community back into Thurleigh Orchard.

Located in Thurleigh Grove, James took over caretaking of the Council-owned land three years ago (with the approval of WCC).

The site currently has 35 trees which include feijoas, lemons, apples & pears.

There are also raspberry, a worsterberry, and a hortberry.

James hopes it can become a community hub.

A place where local children can play and adults can meet.

He plans to do a community potluck lunch and sausage sizzle in October to get interest.

“I want people to wander in and enjoy the space and feel like they own it.

“I want people to adopt a tree or put in a herb garden.

Community orchards and gardens have found plenty of success and interest in Christchurch following the 2011 Earthquakes with many building demolished and green spaces being prevalent in the years since.

“There’s plenty of space that needs to be utilised.

“Whatever people can contribute, they should fill their boots.”

James says once the project gains momentum, he is confident it will take off.

“We just need to create a space people want to come too.

“We don’t want people to feel like it’s a chore to come and water their tree,” he says.

“The more people that get onboard the sooner things will get going.”

That there is so much of it around us and it is very pretty.

It’s diverse and I like that they used it in the Lord of the Rings because of that.

The birds because I really enjoy listening to the sounds, back where I come from there are not many birds like that.

Financial boost for Predator Free Wellington Predator Free Wellington has been given a $7.6 million funding boost today from Predator Free 2050 Limited as part of the Government’s Jobs for Nature programme.

Speaking at the launch, James Willcocks, Predator Free Wellington Project Director said the new funding will generate 42 full time jobs across Wellington.

“Originally a ten year project, with this new funding we can fast track our project and aim to become the world’s first predator free capital city within the next 5 years.

“The aim is to completely eradicate rats, possums, stoats and weasels from the entire Wellington Peninsula, a total area of 30,000 hectares, and in a city where around 212,000 people live.

“In 2019, Predator Free Wellington began NZ’s biggest urban eradication project on the Miramar Peninsula this involved laying 8,000 traps and bait stations, 1,800 community traps and 13,000 detection cards, and resulted in tens of thousands of rats killed.

“The removal of rats and weasels on the Miramar Peninsula is almost

complete, this was the first phase of our project. We are now ready to step into the next eradication phase, Island Bay to CBD. We can then continue rolling out the eradication in phases until we reach the city boundary at Porirua,” James said.

Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council are both significant funders in Predator Free Wellington, alongside philanthropic organisation NEXT Foundation and Predator Free 2050 Ltd. Daran Ponter, Chair, Greater Wellington Regional Council said: “An urban eradication of this scale hasn’t been done in New Zealand before. Miramar Peninsula was the testing ground for us and it’s working.

It’s been amazing to see the results first in the form of birdlife, like kākā and kākariki, returning to the peninsula for the first time,” Daran said.

NEXT Foundation Environmental Advisor Devon McLean says the additional funding is a boost to Wellington but will ultimately benefit all of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

“Predator Free Wellington is a template for urban eradication throughout the country,” he says.

“The lessons being learned in the capital will strongly contribute to a methodology for creating other Predator Free cities - an important part of the bigger puzzle of a Predator Free New Zealand by 2050.“ “Wellington has shown it’s ready to scale up the project, a testimony to the mahi of its people,” Devon said.

Prof Dan Tompkins, Acting CEO of Predator Free 2050 Limited says the team is excited by the progress Wellington is making.

“The suburb-by-suburb approach, working alongside residents to permanently remove predators is a proving ground for the predator free 2050 effort,” Prof Tompkins said.

Mayor Andy Foster says Wellington is on a world leading environmental restoration journey and this fantastic investment by Government will supercharge our vision to become predator free city wide.

“It comes after the incredible effort of volunteers involved in the

Miramar Peninsula project, an area which is now on the verge of being totally rat and mustelid free. Lynn Cadenhead is a water warrior with a heartfelt cause.

Lynn lives with the Tyers Stream running through her property and pollution has been an issue for the five years she has owned the property.

In the stream there are three big eels, who her grandchildren have named Elsie, Enid and Ernie.

The trio of long-finned eels have lived for about 60 years in the stream and they will eventually leave and swim to Tonga to have their babies and then the little eels

will swim back to our stream.

Lynn often sees pollution coming from people tipping paint, rubbish or sediment or other things into their storm water drains which is having a negative effect.

She has collected a bag of chicken breasts and parts off a motorbike in her stream.

“People just need to understand the damage they are doing to the environment.

“There are other ways to dispose of paint and way to trap sediment.”

She said it was a mix of people’s ignorance and laziness which were the main contributors to the issue.

Lynn is passionate about keeping our waterways clear and clean so our kids can play safely in them and the native species survive.

With that in mind, Lynn and the Onslow Resident’s Community Association has organised a meeting at the Khandallah Town Hall on Tuesday night to address the issue.

The event is aimed at educating people about our water catchment and how to keep it clean.

The meeting will be attended by Ben Fountain from Wellington Water and Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Sheryl Miller.

Drop-in events were held in Johnsonville on 28 and 29 August, in Ngaio on 31 August and in Tawa on 4 and 5 September.

There will also be a councillorfacilitated meeting for Tawa business and community leaders at the Tawa Community Centre on 22 September at 7pm.

That will conclude the spatial plan drop-in consultation events and meetings across Ōhāriu. Some events will continue in other parts of the city as Council completes its engagement schedule.

I commend those that have attended and put questions to Council officials. These are important decisions for Wellingtonians to make and it is good to see residents querying specifics of the plan and its implications, and having their voices heard directly by officials.

If you have not yet reviewed the draft plan, I would encourage you to do so. You can find it at https://planningforgrowth. wellington.govt.nz/spatial-plan.

The plan would see significant changes across our communities, particularly with increased housing density within walking distances of railway stations and Johnsonville town centre.

This includes Crofton Downs, Ngaio, Khandallah, Johnsonville and Tawa.

In most instances these will enable housing developments of at least six storeys within those catchment areas.

We need more housing to accommodate growth.

Greater housing density will contribute, as will ‘Greenfields’ development in the likes of Upper Stebbings Valley and Lincolnshire Farm.

A Westie who gave his all Vic Kent, of Northland, who passed away in July, aged 85, is mourned by his family and a wide circle of friends and community groups in Wellington’s western suburbs.

Vic never sought any accolades for his work, but he was committed to service throughout his life to helping the young and old.

With sons Mark and Simon, growing fast, Vic took up the cudgels of leadership and got stuck in.

Scouting in Northland benefited from Vic’s skills, with his warm and engaging personality and taking the role as group leader for many years, then moving to assistant commissioner for the Wellington West Scout Group.

When his sons took up sport and other recreation pursuits, Vic was there giving advice and reinforcing coaching methods. He was proud of their skills and achievements, Simon who had a long playing career with the Karori Cricket Club to senior levels, and indoor cricket, and Mark with his deep interest in mountain bike riding and the creation of tracks for recreation riding on the Western hills of the capital had Vic’s close attention and involvement.

There was no more fierce an armchair critic of rugby referees than Vic Kent.

When something went wrong in a rugby test it was all the ref’s fault. Vic’s criticism could almost be heard down in the valleys. He was a keen sportsman all his life, loved rugby at all levels, especially All Black tests, and attended matches at Athletic Park and the Cake Tin

His passion for cricket ran deep and beyond his own playing years he spent a lot of time at Wellington cricket matches and tests at the Basin Reserve. Golf was also one of his keen interests.

He had long service with the Government and spent a number of years at the Ministry of Defence before retirement.

He hated bureaucracy, and was not averse to criticising a decision that he clearly believed was wrong.

The same went for local government and the Wellington City Council.

But Vic didn’t burst into print, he preferred to confront decision makers face to face to give them a more balanced perspective on an issue. Vic had his influence.

His involvement and respect extended to many community organisations.

He was a very active member of Lions and a Past President of the former Tinakori Lions Club, a member of the Karori Probus Club, and he gave wonderful service for many years to the Karori Citizens Advice Bureau.

He kept himself fit with early morning swims at the Karori Pool until ill health prevented him continuing his interest in swimming.

He adored his family, his beloved wife Trish, they were married for just on 58 years, sons Mark and Simon, their wives Rachel and Mel, and his three grandchildren, Maarama, Kaiya, and Braxtyn and following their various interests.

They were all so special to Vic. His friendship, sincerity, service and humour will be very sorely missed.

Daily checks help keep korora safe Every morning before work begins along Cobham Drive, workers check for korora (little blue penguins) which could have taken refuge over night.

They check under and around vehicles, and in the areas where rock is going to be moved from and to – using a torch when necessary, and a special camera to help them see into the crevices between rocks.

A penguin management plan was developed with, and approved by the Department of Conservation, as part of the planning and consent process, and actions on site include daily penguin checks and reporting.

DOC senior ranger biodiversity Brent Tandy says the project has been a good example of how things should be done.

“In terms of attitude, it’s been really good right from the start, and this has flowed through to action with the team running with our guidance,” he says. “All of the construction team has been engaged, involved and aware, which is critical for the right outcome.”

Penguins tend to avoid the construction zone, but if one is spotted, which has happened on a few occasions, work in the immediate vicinity temporarily stops, and the team seek advice from Brent on the best course of action.

Wellington City Council project manager and engineer Veronica Byrne sees careful penguin management as a top priority for the project, which is transforming this previously eroding, and somewhat neglected area into a much more appealing place for people to walk, run, bike, scoot and spend time.

The project includes better quality walking and bike paths, enhancing the sculpture trail, improving two beaches, building a 430m-long rock revetment (bank) to help control erosion, and planting thousands of native plants.

“Our contractors, Downer, take penguin health and safety seriously, and bought the camera to help ensure there are no

surprises,” Veronica says.

“It helps that building engineered rock seawalls like the ones going in between the roundabouts at Calabar and Troy streets is a very careful process. Our digger operators can only work in this area at low tide, and need to concentrate on small areas at a time.

“The right-sized rocks have to be slowly and skillfully lowered into position to avoid dropping and breaking them, which means our operators are also able to keep an eye out for little blues.”

Predator Free Wellington and Places for Penguins are helping too. Predator Free Wellington checks and maintains predator traps in the area, and volunteers from Places for Penguins will be assisting with placement and monitoring of 20 permanent nesting boxes.

The boxes, built by the construction workers, will supplement the new rock revetment which is going to provide lots of nooks and crannies that penguins will find appealing.

Brent says it will take time for the penguins to find them, and the silt they like to settle in them, but he has no doubt some will nest between the rocks before too long. The revetment will provide safer and better habitat than the eroded sections of coast it is replacing.

He’s also pleased to see hundreds of tonnes of old concrete and brick demolition materials being removed from the foreshore and shallows as part of the project.

“It’s helping to clean up the environment, and removing things that can be potential hidden dangers for penguins like deep voids, and reinforcing wire,” he says.

The workers on site are very familiar with spots where penguins have nested and rested in the past, following regular visits by New Zealand’s only penguin detection dog Mena and her handler Alistair Judkins.

Alumni giving back to Marsden Marsden Old Girls returning to inspire and share their knowledge with current students has always been an integral part of learning at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School.

Prior to lockdown a group of Marsden students spent a weekend learning about lighting in a workshop, led

by Marsden Old Girl and Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School graduate Eddie Fraser-Hoskin, who owns a tech company that provides app development, technical solutions, and professional lighting services.

The course covered understanding how a stage lighting system works, planning and documenting a lighting design from a script, the theory and practice of rigging lights, plotting a show, lighting board operation, health and safety practices and careers in technical production.

It was a very hands-on experience and the girls enjoyed spending time on the catwalk in the school auditorium, creating various effects on the lighting desk and experimenting with LED lights.

Marsden Old Girls from sharing their knowledge with students. This included Jessie Wong, Founder/Creator and director of leather goods label Yu Mei, and her Production Manager Adrian Williams joining Marsden’s Year 11 Textiles Technology class online to discuss their design philosophy and practices. A treat for the girls who were working on designer pandemic shopping bags for their NCEA level 1 projects at the time.

Similarly, Marsden Old Girl Gemma New, Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic in Canada and Principal Guest Conductor at Dallas Symphony, spent a lunch time with Marsden’s music students, before attending rehearsals for her recording and virtual performances as conductor of the NZSO. Gemma bought some of her scores which showed how she annotates them when preparing for her performances.

“We are always thrilled when our inspiring alumni share their knowledge and return to school to inspire our current students, and we thank them for so generously giving their time”, says Marsden Principal Narelle Umbers.

Suzette gets head shaved for cancer

Hairdresser Katie Kohiti’s son Levi was diagnosed with Leukemia 12 months ago today, he passed away seven weeks later.

Suzette has had a sister and brother in Sri Lanka, who have both had cancer diagnoses.

It is her second time shaving her head for the cause, having done it seven years ago.

She is raising funds for the New Zealand Children’s Cancer Foundation. ”When I first did it, my sister had a lump on her breast and this time my brother has been diagnosed with a type of lymphoma cancer,” she says.

Volunteers needed for collection Blind Low Vision NZ, formerly Blind Foundation, is seeking volunteers to support this year’s Blind Week street collection on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October.

Volunteers play a crucial role in raising funds needed to provide practical and emotional support for New Zealanders who are blind, deafblind or have low vision.

“Last year’s street collectors raised over $220,000 to empower Kiwis living with vision loss to live the life they choose. We’re hoping to go even further this year but we need your help,” says John Mulka, Blind Low Vision NZ Chief Executive.

The money raised goes towards providing personalised vision rehabilitation services for people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision to fulfil their goals - whether that’s providing adaptive technology to stay in

employment, orientation and mobility training including guide dogs, or developing tools and strategies to keep doing the things they need and want to do.

“Every day, an average of six Kiwis turn to Blind Low Vision NZ for support with sight loss, and volunteering two hours of your time by shaking a bucket and collecting donations is a way that you can help make a difference in people’s lives,” says Mulka.

“Thank you to all our volunteers – whether you have supported us year-on-year or this will be your first street collection with Blind Low Vision NZ – your contribution goes a long way.”

As well as supporting individuals, Blind Low Vision NZ seek to make big-picture change by advocating for inclusive communities and for optimal eye care services for all New Zealanders.

Newtown Heritage building gets helping hand The future of a 122-year-old building in the heart of Newtown is looking rosier thanks to a helping hand from Wellington City Council.

Clothing designer Duncan McLean has been granted $14,000 to go towards a detailed design for earthquake strengthening of his Riddiford Street shop.

The grant comes from Council’s Built Heritage Incentive Fund which is to assist owners of heritage buildings to undertake conservation and seismic strengthening work where successful outcomes would be unlikely without assistance.

Duncan’s two-storey Victorian shop and residence was built in 1898, the same year as the neighbouring Castle’s Chemist, and is within the Newtown Shopping Centre Heritage Area.

He bought the building in 2002, saying he “just loved its character”.

He moved in upstairs and opened

his own shop on the ground-floor – designing and stitching his own line of bespoke jeans and unique ‘Newtown’ t-shirts.

This came after 10 years of working in the fashion industry in New York. But sewing really is in Duncan’s blood. His grandmother was a seamstress – “she had eight kids and made all their clothes” – and his mother had a fabric shop called Clothesline in Hokitika.

“From when I was about 10 I’d say, ‘Mum, can you make this?’ She’d say, ‘You can make it yourself’. I always wanted something different than what was out there, so I’d end up making it.”

Duncan’s shop is now at the back of his property, accessible from Green Street, and the front area hosts a community of small businesses – Swell Gallery, Sweet Janes, and Health and Healing Massage.

Over the years, Duncan has had his Newtown shop repiled, rewired, reroofed, repainted, and replumbed.

When the building was ‘yellow stickered’ after being declared earthquake-prone in 2010, he knew he had a challenge on his hands.

“It’s like carrying a monkey around on your back – you have no idea what you’re going to be up for financially.”

Duncan investigated funding options but says he was initially put off by the lengthy submission process.

“When you’re running a small business, you don’t have time to spend on filling in an application that you may or may not get.”

Eventually, however, he reached out to Council’s Senior Heritage Advisor, Eva Forster-Garbutt, about the Built Heritage Incentive Fund.

“I said ‘I think I’ll need some help with the application’ and Eva came out and helped me do it. When

you’re not used to funding portals and how they work, knowing what to do can be tricky,” Duncan says.

“There’s so much information

you have to go through, and I’m reasonably tech-savvy but at the end of the day I make clothes, so to have that help was amazing.”

Council grants boost post-lockdown recovery This week, the Wellington City Council provided funding of $340K to 40 organisations that support local community needs across arts, culture, well-being and the natural environment – including those addressing issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many will now receive grants for projects and programmes set up in response to the immediate needs of the Wellington community impacted by the lockdown and ensuing alert level changes, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Our grants help achieve the Council’s objectives and strategic priorities, but they have become even more vital now with so many groups and organisations needing

our support as they go on to support members of the community during these challenging times.

“Lockdown also again showed how special our natural environment is to us, and the mental and physical health benefits it provides. During lockdown, while still observing social distancing, it was great to see so many people enjoying the green belt area in my part of Wellington.

“We decided to back groups with one round for the Natural Environment Fund this financial year, it’s a great result seeing over $50K being approved for some amazing projects that will contribute to protecting, respecting, restoring and growing the precious taonga

surrounding us.”

The Grants Subcommittee also agreed to allocate $95,000 to the Vulnerable Support Charitable Trust (VSCT) for the Friday night provision of Take 10, says Community Well-being portfolio lead Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons.

“Take 10 is a late night safe zone in the city where people of all ages can just stop, relax, play, meet, greet, get help, get support or just get a cup of water.

“Emergency response data from our outreach agencies indicates Friday nights are showing a higher proportion of alcohol related harm for the three months from May-July this year compared to last year, especially between 9pm

and midnight.

“This supports the proposal to provide additional funding to extend Take 10 to Friday nights – and will help go towards ensuring everyone, especially young people, have a safe and enjoyable night out.”

The Council has previously provided funding for the Take 10 Saturday service, which has successfully provided a safe haven for thousands of people during that time.

“Since November 2019, we had over 100,000 people use our services whether it be to charge their phone, take a break, play a game, have a water, meet up with friends, help to get home, connect with our

team, or receive basic medical attention. In that time we have given out over 80,000 cups of water,” says Leigh Keown, VSCT Community Coordinator.

“Wellington City Council’s ongoing support of Take 10 strengthens our partnerships with other organisations and reiterates the importance of what we all do to keep Wellington Central City a safe place to be when out at night.”

The Grants Subcommittee also supported 31 projects with grants totalling $177,583, through the Arts and Culture Fund, including three projects supported for professional performing arts fund, and six projects received $50,824 from the Natural Environment Fund.

Maori Language week for 2020

Maori Language Week is to be celebrated across the Wellington region next week.

Te reo Māori has been an official language of New Zealand since 1987, and Māori Language Week has been celebrated since 1975, raising awareness of the language, and encouraging everyone to embrace te reo Māori and use it on a daily basis.

The event will look a little different this year, with the street parade cancelled due to Ministry of Health guidelines around large gatherings due to COVID-19, but there are a lot of other opportunities for Wellingtonians to get involved with, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“The Council’s Te Tauihu te reo Māori language policy recognises the status of te reo Māori as a taonga, and celebrates, embraces and supports the revitalisation of the language within Council activities and around the city as a whole.

“There have been many examples of te reo being incorporated

into what we do and say over the years, the renaming of Te Wharepōuri Street, adopting the name Tākina for our Convention and Exhibition Centre, and being gifted the name Paekākā for use in the precinct which includes the Wellington Botanic Garden.”

There will also be Piki mai ki Pōneke flags, and larger than life projections in the CBD, plus a Māori language moment for the whole country to take part in, says Māori Partnerships portfolio lead, Councillor Jill Day. “Our Te Tauihu policy aims to make the capital a bilingual city by 2040, with te reo Māori sitting comfortably alongside English in all our cultural, creative and political endeavours.

We want it to be a core part of the cultural fabric and identity of the city – Te Wiki o te Reo Māori helps us achieve this goal.

“This year, Te Wā Tuku Reo

Māori will be a significant event where the whole country is being encouraged to come together at midday on Rāhina (Monday) 14 Mahuru to take part in a nationwide ‘Māori Language Moment’. We hope everyone will take this opportunity to show some aroha to te reo Māori and keep up the kōrero.

“We’ll also be making our own efforts to use and embrace te reo in our Council meetings too,” adds Councillor Day. Along with the events and activities throughout the week, there will also be light projections on the exterior of The Embassy and Te Papa, acting as a canvas for te reo Māori phrases to raise awareness and encourage the public to learn, practice, and spark a conversation.

The projections will run from 6pm – 10pm every night during the week.

GARDENING THIS WEEK September the first month of Spring: By Wally Richards September heralds the beginning of spring, starting another round of seasons.

What we do in our gardens over the next 8 to 10 weeks will have a big bearing on the rest of the gardening year.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether you want a great and healthy garden for the next 9 months or not?

I remember when I was a boy, 70 years ago, that at this time of the year gardeners would be busy digging in their green crops, mucking out the chook house and spreading this wealth of manure over their gardens along with material from the compost bins.

Lime and potash would also be applied to gardens and all worked into the soil with a garden fork. The thousands of worms that would be exposed briefly as these actions proceeded would be amazing.

Hardy plants would be planted out next followed by the more tender plants around Labour Weekend. By summertime the gardens would be bursting with produce and flowers.

It was a wonderful sight plus having great tasty vegetables and fruit for the table along with flowers for the vases.

Reflecting back and comparing the same with many gardens of today, we find a few things were missing in those days, lack of diseases such as blackspot, rust and botrytis.

No chlorine in our tap water killing the soil life.

No sprayers in the garden shed, no bottles of chemicals to rescue plants falling sick, and no bags of man made fertilisers.

In fact the garden shed only comprised of a few garden tools, a lawnmower and other garden accessories such as stakes. The soil was healthy, teeming with microbes and

worms, the plants were healthy and so were we. Repeat: So were we.

Sadly we changed all that over the following years.

Super phosphate was introduced along with man made fertilisers and everything went down hill. Sure plants still grew, often faster than before but these plants were inferior and required chemical sprays to keep them from succumbing to a number of diseases.

Super phosphate kills the soil life and in my opinion should be banned because of the harm it does to our food chain. All the man made fertilisers contain super phosphate in some form including the Nitrophoska fertilisers.

Chemical herbicides only make matters worse.

This spring you can make a difference if you wish, use only natural products in your gardens similar to the ones we used in the 1950's.

Blood and bone, sheep manure pellets, garden lime, gypsum, dolomite, animal manures, bags of compost and natural liquid plant foods.

Avoid if possible chemical weedkillers especially around food producing plants and preferred plants such as your roses. A natural alternative would be to use a cheap cooking oil or vinegar as a spray.

Ammonium Sulphamate is also a great alternative.

Used in full sun when the soil is on the dry side the spray dehydrates the weeds and any other plant that maybe sprayed by accident.

The vinegar spray is 500 grams of refined salt (table salt) 4.5 litres of vinegar. Add the salt to a small amount of hot water to completely dissolve then add to vinegar with 5 mls of Raingard.

This spray does have a small residue and may for a time affect growth in that area.

Ammonium Sulphamate 200 grams to a litre of water with Raingard added.

Actual weeding by hand, or with a Dutch hoe or weed eater is best overall.

What happens when we use chemicals, man made fertilisers or chlorinated tap water we kill the beneficial soil life and some of the pathogens but a lot of the pathogens survive to do damage to your plants in the form of diseases.

The good microbes that control the undesirables are not there to do their job. (The same thing happens in our bodies, the beneficial micro organisms keep the disease ones under control when we are healthy.)

Insect pests are also attracted to the weakened plants causing you more problems.

In the average garden one would find on a soil test, that there is a lot of man made fertiliser and contaminates locked up in the soil.

You can release these and remove them by drenches of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) and Mycorrcin.

Place the products into a watering can and water across your rose bed, vegetable garden and flower gardens.

Do this once a month for two or three months and see how the plants respond. Use the same products to spray the foliage of the plants growing in those gardens also. This will give the plants a natural protection from diseases.

You can also further strengthen the health of the plants by supplying them with all the minerals possible.

This is achieved by sprinkling some Ocean Solids and Unlocking your Soil over the soil and watering in.

The program would be for your vegetable plot and roses (plus any other area you wish to treat) is to apply a little garden lime, dolomite and gypsum, ( 3 forms of calcium

plus sulphur and magnesium) along with some blood and bone, Fruit and Flower Power (Potash and magnesium) sheep manure pellets or animal manure.

Sprinkle a little of Ocean Solids and Unlocking your Soil; cover with a mulch of compost.

Put a 10 micron carbon bonded filter and housing on your garden tap to remove the chlorine.

Then water in with the MBL and Mycorrcin. The beneficial microbes in the soil will grow and control the pathogens.

The plants such as your roses will have all the elements and minerals they require along with a lot of excellent natural food. As the days go by you should begin to see the healthy difference.

I garden and the results speak for themselves.

Our garden is a picture of health.

We supply all our own vegetables from our small patch on the outskirts of Tauranga, and hand plenty of produce over the fence to our neighbors.

It has been an absolute joy to watch the soil take on a new lease of life.

Even our lawns are more verdant and lawns in the heat and humidity of Tauranga are difficult to control.

I am hoping that another year of MBL and Un locking your Soil will have the lawns in pristine health.

Jville Hawks push competition front runners

The Johnsonville Hawks gave competition leaders Marist St Pats, a heck of a scare during their Swindale Shield match at Helston Park on Saturday.

For the third time this season, a late try cost the home team an upset win and they eventually went down 26-24.

The result leaves them one competition point out of 12th, where the Wellington Axemen hold the final playoff position with one week to go.

Johnsonville will need to push the Upper Hutt Rams to a close match if they want to leapfrog the Axemen.

The Hawks were unable to hold on to a 19-5 halftime advantage against Marist

St Pats.

Right winger Waisea Yabakivou scores twice while centre Ivan Vaisagote also dotted down.

The team built off their d roug ht-brea k i ng w i n against Avalon the previous week but could not sustain it for the full 80 minutes.

The Johnsonville presidents grade team lost 10-5 to Paremata-Plimmerton.

The Johnsonville premier rugby team will need to earn some competition points to sneak into 12th and keep their season alive for another week, or their 2020 Swindale Shield campaign will come to an end on Saturday.

Izzy skis to third in tough conditions

Samuel Marsden Collegiate’s Izzy Soane had a podium finish at the South Island Ski Championships at Mt Hutt last week.

The 16-year-old finished third in the under-19 Super G race on Friday.

She said she was thrilled with the outcome.

“I felt very excited and proud of myself as I had not done as well in any of my races last year and it truly gave me a definite sense that I was improving and that my work was paying off.”

Unfortunately she had an impressive crash on the first run of the slalom race, so was out of contention, and the GS race was cancelled due to strong winds.

“On all the days the snow was pretty good with a hard and fast surface that is perfect for racing.

“Sadly, on the Saturday and Sunday we had strong winds so the gusting headwinds made the race a little unfair for some but I had a pretty good

window in the wind.

“The wind also meant that my favourite discipline (Giant Slalom) was unfortunately cancelled.”

Izzy has been on skis from a young age.

“My parents first put me on skis when I was four but we didn’t do much each year until I was around 12 when I joined the Turoa Academy.

“Then I started racing for Team Ruapehu at 14, which is incredibly late for ski racing as most kids start under 10 or 12.

“Now I race for Queenstown Alpine Ski Team (QAST).”

Izzy races in the Alpine National Junior Championships at Coronet Peak this weekend, and then the New Zealand Alpine Youth Championships at Cardrona at the end of the month.

“I would like to get a podium at Cadrona Youth Champs in a couple of weeks. I have just completed Nationals where I came ninth in the under-21 women’s category so that top ten was my main goal for the season.”

New Season for Johnsonville Bowling Club

After months of Covid-19 disruption and uncertainty members of the Johnsonville Bowling Club are keenly awaiting the beginning of the new season.

All the recent talk of social distancing, alert levels, contact tracing, etc will be forgotten and the focus will return to the bowling greens.

The club will have its official opening for the 2020-2021 season on Saturday, followed by the annual Symes Trophy event on the Sunday.

With last season ending a couple of months early because of the lockdown restrictions, the off-season has stretched out to almost six months.

As such, the club’s players just want to get out on the greens again.

Members will also be keen to try on their new shirts, trousers and jackets as the club has

introduced a fresh new uniform.

Obtaining shirt sponsorship from local businesses The Motor Doctor and The House of Travel has significantly reduced the cost of the uniforms for the members.

Adding to the interest this season will be the influx of established players signing up from other clubs.

This has added to the club’s depth and allowed the club to enter additional interclub teams for the new season.

The Bowls Wellington Interclub competition begins on the first Saturday in October and both the men’s and women’s premier teams will be expecting to make the top four playoffs again.

The club is also holding “Have a Go Open Day’s on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday September 20, both beginning at 2pm for those interested in trying out the sport.

Island rivalry does the trick Sometimes you have to eat a little humble pie.

The North v South game was one of the most entertaining games in recent memory.

A match, which I thought was simply a money grab, was played at high intensity and an even higher skill-set.

Seven lead changes saw the South prevail with a late Will Jordan try 38-35 at an empty Cake Tin in Wellington.

Sunday’s All Blacks squad naming for matches which may never

happen this year, was a good mix of youth and experience.

Super Rugby form was largely rewarded and key areas of concern like lock and No 8 appeared to be addressed, at least for the short to medium term.

There were very few unlucky players, when you pick 35, that should be the case.

One such player though, who must have had a miserable weekend on the couch was Chiefs flanker Lachlan Boshier.

The fetching No 7 was a stand-

out in Super Rugby, pilfering ball at ruck time in a style which reminded me of Josh Kronfeld in the 1990s.

He was the best player on a team which did not win a game all campaign yet could not find a spot in the North team and therefore had his All Black ambitions torpedoed, at least at this point.

Reservations remain over whether Sam Cane’s head, neck and back can hold-up enough to make him a regular captain but with no games on the horizon it’s

largely a moot point.

The squad is full of talented outside backs and Caleb Clarke, the Blues winger and son of former Auckland centre, Eroni Clarke, could be the brightest one of all.

Despite all the pressure on Ian Foster in his new role, he seemed to have satisfied even his harshest critics with the balance of his first squad.

Just when they get to play together for the first time is anyone’s guess.

It will allow a renewed focus on

the national provincial competition which starts this week.

All Blacks galore should be available for their provinces.

It may be strange to see Aaron Smith play for Manawatu or Kieran Read suit up for Counties.

It’s a throwback to the late 90s when the competition was a shining light on the calendar and not used as a stepping-stone for emerging players to earn Super Rugby contracts.

It’s a brave new world, this rugby in 2020.

North Wellington triumph over Lower Hutt

With five matches still to play in the Men’s Central Football League, the final table positions are still too close to call. After a narrow loss to league leaders Miramar Rangers last week, New World Newlands North Wellington went to Fraser Park to take on a strong Lower Hutt side.

The conditions were tough under the lights at Fraser Park on Friday evening with a strong cross wind for the whole 90 minutes which would unfortunately reduce the quality of the game with both sides struggling to judge the wind.

This lead to many passes being under hit and holding up in the wind or over hit crosses being caught in strong gusts.

In the opening 20 minutes North Wellington created multiple chances, pressing and not letting Lower Hutt get in to the flow of the game. After a few good chances were wasted Lower Hutt grew in to the game and with their first real chance they were clinical and took the lead in the 22nd minute.

Blake Driehuis scored for Lower Hutt, the shot was from his left foot outside the box and was curled past helpless goalkeeper Nic Stanton.

The game ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the first half with neither side really creating too many chances, there was always a chance for something to happen at any set piece with the wind causing confusion for both attacker and defenders alike. With one minute to go before

half time North Wellington scored an equaliser. Fox Slotemaker was the first to react to a windswept corner that landed awkwardly in the Lower Hutt penalty area.

With no one able to clear it and some ping pong inside the box, Fox reacted to poke the ball home from 6 yards out and send both sides in to the break at 1-1.

The second half was equally as scrappy due to the conditions. Both sides were aware the conditions were tough and ready to capitalise on any error from the opposition.

This took the game from end to end with neither team really controlling it. With 20 minutes remaining North Wellington’s leading scorer Jesse Randall stepped up to take a free kick in a dangerous area just outside the

Lower Hutt box. The shot was struck around the defending wall and will be remembered by all in attendance as the goal of the day and possibly the season to date. That strike was certainly worthy of being a winning goal and indeed it was, as the final 20 minutes were a nervy affair but North Wellington held on for the victory.

In the Men’s Premier League on Saturday, the Newlands Arms North Wellington side were also on the right side of the ledger with a thrilling 3-1 win over league leaders, Upper Hutt City. The club’s luck couldn’t hold for all four of its top sides though with the Innkeeper Johnsonville side going down 4-1 to league leaders Wellington United in the W League and the Innkeeper Johnsonville

team losing 3-0 to Island Bay in the Women’s Premier League.

In other matches in the Men’s Central League, the race to avoid the wooden spoon and relegation is still deadlocked with Wairarapa United and Petone slugging out a 3 all draw. The two sides both moved to 9 points, with Wairarapa holding the bottom spot on goal difference.

Miramar Rangers maintain their 1 point lead over Western Suburbs and sit on 35 points. Both teams did enough on the day with Miramar coming out with a 4-1 win over Napier and Western Suburbs fending off Waterside Karori in the end with a 2-0 win. Wellington Olympic also prevailed 2-0 over Stop Out and retain their third place spot on 27 points.
