In addition he won the awards for first place in both year 13 Physical Education and Te Reo Māori.

Just five days after receiving his awards at the prizegiving, Kahukura received another major award.

He was presented the award as KĪ o Rahi Sportsperson of the Year at College Sport Wellington’s awards dinner, held at Te Rauparaha Arena on 5 November.

Next year Kahukura will begin studying towards a B Com at Victoria University.

And after he graduates “the biggest goal would be hopefully to start a business,” he says.

While at Victoria he aims to introduce his favourite sport, KĪ o Rahi, to the campus.

“I love the sport so much and I want to get other people to enjoy it too,” he says.

When asked what advice he would give to young students, Kahukura says that it would be “to branch out and try news things.

“Jump out of your bubble. That’s what I wish I had done when I was younger.

“Be open to new ideas and try new things.

Work hard and try your best,” he says.

Charvana Williams is Wainuiomata High School’s Sportswoman of the year.

She was presented the Janette Melrose Cup, named as a tribute to the high school’s late principal. Ms Melrose was a competitive athlete herself and believed that sport is crucial for young people.

Three days after being presented the Janette Melrose Cup, Charvana was named College Sport Wellington’s women’s Bowls Sportsperson of the Year. She won that same award last year.

Charvana was the Player of the Tournament in the Wellington regional championships as well as being a member of the regional champion team.

She was a member of the Wellington under 26 representative team that was runner-up in the national tournament.

She was also a member of the Wellington under 18 representative team and the Wellington 1 to 8 year representative team.

Connor Keall is the school’s 2023 Sportsman of the Year.

Connor has been performing at a high level across multiple sports for a number of years now.

His athleticism and skill have seen him travel country wide and over to Australia .

He has represented the school in Badminton, Basketball, Lawn Bowls, Rugby, Softball and Squash at a high level This year he was a member of the New Zealand Under 15 Softball team that competed in the Australian State championships.

Flynn Keall won the 2023 Bill Sharp International Award.

This award is for a student that represented New Zealand in a sport.

Flynn was a member of the New Zealand under 18 Softball team at the Australian state championships and was also a member of the International Softball Academy team.

Byron Taumata received the 2023 Kauika Leadership Award.

The leadership in sports award goes to the student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership through sport for Wainuiomata High School.

Byron has displayed leadership and good role modelling from year 9 and always thinks about others.

New Wood St bus shelter planned

Metlink have said that they will be erecting a bus shelter in Wood Street next year, Wellington Regional Councillor Quentin Duthie said in his presentation to the 1 November meeting of the Wainuiomata Community Board.

This follows the initiative of a local resident, who placed a home made bus shelter in Wood Street in August.

The resident, who asked the “Wainuiomata News” not to name her in the paper, said she was one of a number of local residents who have been asking Metlink and Greater Wellington Regional Council for a bus shelter at this stop for years.

“I’ve been here [in Wood Street] for 13 years and agitating for a bus shelter all that time to no avail.

“We got a bit desperate,” she said.

So she made a bus stop and placed it on Wood Street near the intersec-

“Now we have got a bus shelter and it is being used. The kids are using it and so are the older people,” she said soon after the home made shelter was erected.

“Even the bus drivers say that this spot gets more demand than the other bus shelter further down Wood Street,” another local resident, who also did not want to be named, told the “Wainuiomata News”.

“We get excuse after excuse after reason from them [Greater Wellington Regional Council and Metlink], but no bus stop.

“The locals are loving this home made one for now.

“Even the fact that it has not been tagged yet says something,” the resident said soon after the shelter was erected.

The home made bus shelter has since been removed.

“We are actively trying to resolve this shelter issue at this location,” Cr Duthie told the community board.

“There is currently a bus stop (number 9915 Wood Street) at Parenga Street with bus markings located outside number 104 Wood Street.

“We have been looking to install a much desired shelter for the community at this stop,” Cr Duthie said.

“As you may be aware, we consulted to install a shelter outside their property on the berm.

“This would be the best position for the shelter, close to the head of the stop for people to make their way from shelter onto the bus and it enables the bus to see people waiting in the shelter, enabling it to stop or keep going if there isn’t anyone there.”

However the property owner “strongly opposed the installation of the shelter, as it would impact their outlook and had noise and security concerns.

“Whilst much less desirable, we are now looking at installing a permanent shelter at the alternate

shelter location.”

The next steps were to complete consultation with the residents, then gain approval from Hutt City Council.

“Once approved, it will be added to our shelter installation programme.

“Given the current number of installations scheduled, this will likely be in the new year.”

Cr Duthie also provided an update on a proposal to place a new bus stop on The Strand, near the Wainuiomata Masonic Village.

“Our officers have been investigating potential opportunities to improve overall bus access to the Wainuiomata town centre, along with the retirement village,” Cr Duthie said.

“They are currently working through options, indicative costs and supporting infrastructure. “ This would not be a quick process, and it was likely that any route changes would need public consultation process, Cr Duthie added.

Pasifika student poetry highly commended The Pasifika Navigators: Pasifika Student Poetry Collection, produced

by Mila’s Books has been acknowledged at the Storylines Notable Book Awards as a highly commended title in the Non-Fiction category.

The book includes 52 Pasifika students across Aotearoa, including students from Wainuiomata Intermediate School, who share their dreams, aspirations, life changing challenges and learnings.

Lesa Bingley attending Chris Bishop is Hutt hui South’s MP

The Wainuiomata Community Board’s Deputy Chair Lesa Bingley will attend this year’s Young Elected Members hui, the board decided on 1 November.

The hui will be held in the Bay of Islands from 6 to 9 December.

First introduced in 2017, the hui brings together young elected members from around New Zealand to support each other to drive positive change in their communities.

More than 100 young elected members under the age of 40 from across the country are expected to attend, to exchange ideas and build relationships.

The hui’s kaupapa is “Anga Whakamua: Setting our collective course in the birthplace of Aotearoa”.

Lesa was elected to the community board for her first term at last year’s local body elections.

At the board’s first meeting she was elected Deputy Chiar.

Last year Lesa organised a petition opposing the opening of a new bottle store in Queen Street, a petition that attracted around 900 signatures.

Chris Bishop will represent Wainuiomata people in Parliament for the next three years.

The National Party MP was confirmed as the new Hutt South representative when the final election result was announced on 3 October.

Chris, in fact, extended his lead over Labour’s Ginny Andersen, who was the Hutt South MP during the last Parliamentary term.

On election night Chris led Ginny by 1,094 votes. However after the special votes were counted Chis’s lead had risen to 1,332 votes.

Chris won Hutt South with 19,144 votes, while Ginny attracted 17,812 votes.

Mr Bishop entered Parliament as a list MP in 2014 after standing against Trevor Mallard in the 2014 election. He lost the race to gain the Hutt South seat by just 709 votes.

He then became the first person outside the Labour Party to win the Hutt South seat when he defeated Ginny Andersen by around 1,500 votes in 2017.

Mr Bishop is National’s Spokesperson for housing, RMA reform-urban development, and infrastructure, and is ranked third in the National line-up.

He was also National’s Chair for the 2023 election campaign.

Is a new store coming to Wainui?

The “Wainuiomata News” is currently making enquiries about what may or may not be happening with the big building once occupied by the Warehouse.

This follows talk the paper has been hearing from a number of sources, saying that they had heard Mitre 10 was planning to open a new Wainuiomata store in the building.

The “Wainuiomata News” contacted both the owners of the building, Progressive Enterprises, and Mitre 10.

“I can’t confirm anything at the moment,” a Mitre 10 spokesperson said.

However Mitre 10 was always looking for ways to better serve the community.

The Warehouse’s Wainuiomata store closed on 14 November 2016 as a result of the 7.8 magnitude Kaikōura earthquake.

At the time the store was scheduled to close in early 2017, when the company’s lease of the property ended.

It has been empty now for coming up to seven years.

The Wainuiomata Warehouse store was located in the Wainuiomata Mall, which was largely demolished, with the final stage of the demolition taking place in 2021.

The former Warehouse building is the only section of the old mall still standing.

What’s Cooking... in Air Fryer BBQ Pork Ribs Ingredients:

• Pork ribs • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1 tablespoon white sugar • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper • ½ teaspoon ground cumin • ½ teaspoon granulated onion • ¼ teaspoon Greek seasoning (Optional) • Barbeque sauce

1. Preheat the air fryer to 180 degrees 2. Strip the membrane from the back of the ribs, cut the ribs into 4 equal portions.

3. Combine brown sugar, white sugar, sweet paprika, smoked paprika, granulated garlic, pepper, cumin, onion, and Greek seasoning in a small bowl. Rub spice mixture all over the ribs and place in the air fryer basket.

4. Cook ribs in the air fryer for 30 minutes, turning after 15 minutes. Brush with barbeque sauce and air fry for 5 more minutes.

The panel is looking at things such as how many councillors there should be, whether those councillors should be elected from local wards, from across the whole city, or a combination of both (as at present), and whether there should be community boards.

In addition to a survey, the panel is also meeting with a wide range of community groups and organisations over the coming months to hear firsthand how well they think they are currently represented on the council.

“We will carefully consider all the feedback we receive, along with other information about the city’s communities, before making recommendations to the council next year about the representation arrangements that should be in place for the 2025 council elections.

Riley twins hit track together

Wainuiomata High School alumni Luke Riley and his twin brother Joseph hit the race track together for the first time at theMotul 6-hour endurance race at Taupo on 28 October.

It was all the more remarkable too in that it also represented Joseph’s road-racing debut, and on a 1000cc superbike no less.

Competing for the ITools Racing Team, Luke, Joseph and Paraparaumu rider Hamish Tarr rode well to finish eighth

“It was [Joseph’s] first time racing a superbike and came just one week after he’d first ridden the bike, just the previous weekend,” Luke explained.

“We are both former motocross riders and some of the skills were transferrable.

“It was all about having a great time with our mates,” Luke continued.

“We had not gone about trying to set the world on fire … the secret was to not bike off more than we could chew, and also to not crash the bikes.

“We weren’t the fastest riders out there, but we were consistent and that was vital.

“Results were secondary to the experience of simply travelling New Zealand and racing bikes together.

“If an event gets rained off or cancelled due to track conditions, it’s not the end of the world for us, because we can just pack the bikes up and go do something else fun together while we’re away for the weekend.

Tag competition coming

The four-week competition starts on 15 November and will be held at Frederick Wise Park from 6pn to 8pm on Wednesdays.

The competition will feature two grades – a competitive grade and a whānau grade.

There are no criteria for the competitive grade. However teams playing in the whānau grade must have one kotiro, one kaumātua and two under 12s on the field at all times.

The Whānau Tag competition is sponsored by E Tu Whānau and Kōkiri Marae.

Ban fireworks sales Guy Fawkes is is not even our history. You are celebrating something that has no connection with New Zealand.

This stupidity could cost you.

Why give people tax cuts to spend on fireworks?

Those who own animals should know better – not to let them off where animals are near.

How about the wild birds people are meant to be protecting? Are you not scaring the feathers off

them?

Fireworks should only be let off in New Year, once a year and by an expert. Have only public displays.

Oh yes the Government won't do anything while it brings in revenue.

But look back at how many wildfires have occurred overseas, nearly taking out Spain and Australia and California etc.

Fireworks display wanted I am a bit confused. Do we celebrate Guy Fawkes or not?

The public display of fireworks had been removed a while ago.

Instead we have a whole pile of conveniently popping up small outlets once a year to sell those fireworks to the public.

What is this for? To make money, to stress pets, and make them hide away anxiously, make a distraction and set anxiety to

people when they hear those fire in the middle of the night?

I just don't understand the whole point of that.

Why don't we just do it the opposite way – fireworks sales to the public banned, instead a big and beautiful display once a year to enjoy for those ones interested, away from private yards.

New High School Tumuaki

Lea Vellenoweth is the new Tumuaki (Principal) of Wainuiomata High School.

Lea has been part of the leadership team since she joined the staff team as the Deputy Principal in April this year.

Since then she had also served as Kaitumuaki (Acting Principal).

Lea came to Wainuiomata from Hobsonville Point Secondary School in Auckland, where she

was the Deputy Principal for 10 years.

Lea began teaching in Levin and then moved to Marlborough Girls’ College.

She then left teaching to work at Outward Bound, at Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds.

At Outward Bound she worked with a number of groups – women prisoners, a brain injury group, and students who were enrolled with Work and Income New Zealand.

Following her time at Outward

Bound, Lea returned to her home town of Opotiki and was Deputy Principal of Opotiki College and then moved to Auckland.

Lea was welcomed to Wainuiomata High School at a Powhiri on 24 April.

She was attracted to Wainuiomata by two things – the great staff team at the school and the community here.

The staff “really care about the kids,” Lea told the “Wainuiomata News” soon after arriving.

Wainuiomata High School has

some “really great” teachers and “they are doing some really innovative things to get the kids engaged in education.

“I think the kids here are really lucky.”

As well as being attracted to working in a school with a great group of teachers, Lea was also attracted to Wainuiomata because the valley has “a really strong wider community.

“There is a sense of a smaller community here and I think that is really important.”

GARDENING THIS WEEK

Mycorrcin getting a far better garden: By Wally Richards I was asked a very interesting question a while back which went like this, ‘How come my parents and grandparents had such bountiful gardens?

Everything thrived and I never saw any great problems with pests and diseases, but on the other hand I have to use fertilisers and sprays just to maintain a mediocre garden.

What’s gone wrong?

Well the answer as I see it was the difference in gardening. In days gone by people did not buy fertilisers and plant foods, instead they made their own compost and most people had their own chickens that were given all the kitchen scraps.

This was recycled into manure by the chickens and when the runs were mucked out this goodness went into the compost or directly into the soil.

The micro-organisms and beneficial fungi in the soil would be found in abundance along with lots of worms of course.

Then people started using chemical fertilisers and these destroy the beneficial soil life.

Also watering your gardens with chlorinated water kills the soil life and gets rid of the worms.

This means plants don’t feed as well, valuable nutrients are lost as there is not the metabolisms there to make them soluble for the plants.

The plants are not so healthy and they then get attacked by pests and diseases.

The answer is to reverse the spiral and there is a product called Wallys Mycorrcin, an organic product

which promotes beneficial microbes to assist in the composting of organic matter into humus.

It stimulates Mycorrhizal fungi which act as an extension to the plants roots assisting in the collection of nutrients and moisture.

Mycorrhizal fungi can increase the root zone of a plant by up to 800% collecting nutrients and moisture.

Mycorrhizal fungi collects and delivers to the roots of plants which the plant thanks by giving back some carbohydrates.

A perfect relationship in a happy healthy garden.

Mycorrcin improves calcium uptake, stimulates the growth of feeder roots and microbes responsible for mineralisation, improving Calcium availability and uptake.

It inhibits soil pathogens, containing defense proteins such as bacteriocin like substances which inhibit soil pathogens.

It promotes balanced growth of both roots and canopy.

It aids plants in increased growth rates, heavier crop yields, warmer soil, reduced disease problems, revitalizes soils and microbe activity that have become poorly due to chemical fertilisers and sprays.

It’s a must for preferred plants such as roses, annuals, vegetables, fruit and lawns as well as other ornamentals.

Soil drench applied before planting, 1ml per litre of water of non chlorinated water over a square metre.

Sprayed at 5ml per litre over

existing plants and on the soil around the plant, ideally every 14 days.

Available in a 250ml, 500ml bottle and 1 litre containers.

Ideal to add to Magic Botanic Liquid to spray regularly over preferred plants and food crops.

By using Wallys Mycorrcin we stimulate the beneficial organisms and they convert the available food into soluble forms for the plants.

You use less food and get better results.

Here are a few examples: Root mass of a grape vine cutting 800% bigger than the control plant from just dipping in Mycorrcin for a few minutes before planting.

Roses that were treated during the summer were in full bloom with lots

of new buds, lush healthy foliage, no sign of disease and for the first time ever fragrance from the flowers was noticed.

Other roses on the same property, in a better location, were not treated and at the time of this report, end of March in Auckland, these ones had finished flowering and looked a mess from black spot.

The manufacturer of Mycorrcin took his wife to see a planting of 18 month old olive trees in a trial area that were treated with the product.

The wife told her husband off, because their 10 year old olive tree at home was not a patch on these big healthy trial plants.

You can increase the yield of your strawberry plants by 200 to 400

plus percent with a weekly spray of Mycorrcin.

Do you want a really terrific garden? The answer lays in the soil and Mycorrcin.

Use on your container plants too because they will really benefit from it.

If you have fallen leaves rake them up and spread them over the soil in bare gardens or under trees and shrubs and spray them with Mycorrcin, it breaks them down in about 4 months.

Use in the compost heap for better compost, faster.

This product is going to help change your garden into a great garden and save you money in sprays and fertilisers.
