Anaru Ryall has “done an incredible job” as Love Wainuiomata’s Co-ordinator, says the Chair of the Wainuiomata Community Board, Te Awa Puketapu.

Anaru (Raukawa ki Wharepūhunga and Ngāti Raukawa te au ki te Tonga) is stepping down from the role and his last day on the job will be at the Wainuiomata Pool Party on 10 February.

One was the “Welcome to Wainuiomata” sign finally being installed on the road leading into the town.

The unveiling of the sign on 7 October last year was the culmination of eight years of endeavour.

The Matariki event, Xmas in the Nui and the opening of the town centre upgrade were the other three highlights.

All four happened as the result of teamwork.

“None of these things would have been possible without the people of Wainuiomata,” Anaru says.

“Whoever my successor is in this role would need to be someone who can continue the momentum and build strong relationships with the Wainuiomata community to make things happen.”

Opportunities include setting up a regular farmers market.

“People in Wainuiomata have consistently been asking for a café and a family restaurant as the population grows,” he notes, adding that these were also opportunities that could be supported

by Love Wainuiomata and led by the community.

“We are losing someone who has been amazing for the Wainuiomata community,” Te Awa says.

“Anaru has really built on the work of Esther [Venning].” Esther was Love Wainuiomata’s Co-ordinator before Anaru picked up the role in December 2022.

“We are really sad to lose him and we wish him nothing but the best,” Te Awa says.

“I have found it an emormous privilege to be in a paid role to contribute to my own community, which I have lived in for eight years,” Anaru says.

“The community has given my family so much.

“The people of Wainuiomata is what makes this community tick.

“Even though I’m moving away from a paid role in the community I will still do my bit to contribute,” Anaru says.

“I am staying on the Love Wainuiomata committee to ensure there is continuity and momentum as we transition to a new co-ordinator.”

Even though his last day in the job is on 10 February “I will still be around for a couple of hours a week.”

Community Patrol needs volunteers

The Wainuiomata Community Patrol is seeking volunteers so it can provide better coverage of the valley.

Every Friday and Saturday, as well as other random days during the week, the patrol is out and about, keeping an eye on Wainuiomata.

“It would be great to get more days out,” the Community Patrol Co-ordinator Tracey Mansfield says.

To do that, the patrol needs more volunteers. Ideally, they need enough people so they can patrol every day of the week.

“Help keep your neighbourhood safe while making new friends and learning new skills,” Tracey says.

“With flexible hours and support from the team, you can volunteer at a time that works best for you.

“Together, we can create a safer and stronger Wainuiomata," Tracey says.

The time commitment is not big either. People who can volunteer for four hours a month would be welcome. If they want to, people can

also volunteer to serve for longer.

“Our main aim is to deter crime – deterring and preventing things before they happen,” Tracey says.

The patrol does this by being visible and highly present.

“Although we can’t measure it we know that we do deter crime.

“You are not going to break into somebody’s house if you are going to be seen by the community patrol,” she says.

The community patrols provide an “invaluable service” to the community, says Sergeant Patrick Tangipo, Officer in Charge of the Wainuiomata Police.

The service “works really well as the eyes and ears of the Police, to see what is going on in the community and to work towards making Wainuiomata a safe place.

“When something happens they are often in the right place at the right time and can pass the information on to us.

“They are a good source of intelligence and can alert us to something we need to look at.

“With their intelligence and ringing us, they help us build a picture of who’s out and about.

“I think they are a great asset to have out there in the community.”

Battling the attack on Maori The National Iwi Chairs are saying they will fight government’s sustained attack on Māori.

“We have no choice but to fight,” says Rahui Papa, the Chair of Ngāti KorokĪ Kahukura.

Rahui was one of the 50 plus Iwi Chairs who attended the National Iwi Chairs Forum in Kerikeri on 1 February where the unanimous decision from the iwi was to fight what they see as the government’s continued sustained attack on Māori.

“We attended and heard the korero at Turangawaewae and also Rātana,” says Jamie Tuuta, the Chair of Ngāti Mutunga.

“We support the outcomes. Our

people want to know that we care about how they are feeling. They want to see action, and we support [that].”

The National Iwi Chairs Forum agreed to a range of options for fighting the different issues.

This includes supporting existing legal action; filing new legal actions; submitting complaints with the Human Rights Commission; submitting challenges to the United Nations; carrying out targeted protest and taking other measures on specific policies covered in the coalition government’s agreements and 100 day plan.

“The attacks by this government is on a range of fronts affecting

Maori,” Rahui says.

“From unilaterally redefining Te Tiriti o Waitangi through to belittling Te Reo Māori to removing protections for our mokopuna in Oranga Tamariki through to the dismantling of the Māori Health Authority which was based on detailed research and determinations of the Waitangi Tribunal, which is also under attack.”

The National Iwi Chairs Forum is meeting with the Prime Minister together with a number of Cabinet Ministers including Ministers Willis, Reti, Bishop, Upston, Mitchell, Goldsmith, Potaka, Simmonds, Watts, Penk, Jones, Seymour, McKee and van Velden.

“There are clear areas that we are not going to work with the government on because they have locked down their position and will inevitably double down,” Jamie says.

“But there are also a number of issues that we will work with the government.

“This includes issues from social development to economic development. Housing and the review of Kainga Ora are issues that we must work on together,” Jamie says.

“We will fight for as long as it takes to stop this government from thinking that it is okay to attack Māori – their Tiriti partner,” Rahui adds.

The Wainuiomata Community Board is holding its first meeting for the year at 6:30pm on 14 February at the Wainuiomata Community Hub. And the board’s Chair, Te Awa Puketapu, is keen to encourage people to come to the meeting.

“It is important that members of the community are connecting with the council and connecting with the board members on issues relating to Wainuiomata,” Te Awa says.

“Come to the meetings, be a part of the process, be in contact with Councillors – Keri

to date.”

Another important thing is that Wainuiomata residents become involved in Hutt City Council’s consultation process, including making submissions to the council.

The current community board has now completed the first of the three year cycle it was voted in to serve the people of Wainuiomata.

“There have been a lot of learnings in that year and there is still much to learn,” Te Awa says.

During this second year of the board’s term Te Awa has a “big focus” on three things.

The first is “getting peole to understand the roles and responsibilities of the community board”.

The second is participating in the communiy board and in Hutt City Council consultations.

The third is “getting people to think about standing for the community board.”

Although the next election is almost two years away, the process of working toward election begins in about a year. So now is the time to start thinking about it.

More Police in two years?

Hutt South MP Ginny Andersen’s question in Parliament led on to Prime Minister Chris Luxon having to “correct” a statement made by Police Minister Mark Mitchell.

“Is it the Government's policy to deliver 500 extra police within two years as per the coalition agreement with New Zealand First?” Ms Andersen asked the Police Minister on 30 January.

“The Government's policy is to deliver 500 additional police officers over the term

of this Government, which is three years, and we've been very clear that we understand the challenges around that, because, as the incoming Government, we discovered that it was difficult to fill existing recruit wings, that the Australians are here recruiting our police officers, and that we've got lots of senior police officers that are coming up to retirement,” Mr Mitchell said.

Ms Andersen, who is Labour’s Police and Justice spokesperson, then asked: “Can the Minister be clear that he is

walking back on the coalition agreement that is undertaken to New Zealanders that he will deliver 500 additional police within two years?”

“No, I'm saying that we have, as the incoming Government, committed to 500 additional police officers over the term of this Government,” Mr Mitchell replied.

However Prime Minister Luxon said on 31 January that the Police Minister had got the time frame wrong.

said that the promise of delivering 500 more Police over the next two years was still in place.

“This week Mark Mitchell said the 500 Police promised would be in three years,” Ms Andersen told the “Wainuiomata News”.

“Christopher Luxon then came out and said [Mr Mtichell had] ‘muddled his words’.

“It's good to see that the Government has now reaffirmed their commitment to deliver more Police,” Ms Andersen says.

Te Tiriti links us together

Te Tiriti o Waitangi gives New Zealanders “our place to stand together,” the Governor-General, Dame Cindy Kiro, said in her speech at Te Whare RŪnanga, Waitangi Treaty Grounds, on 3 February.

“Just as a papa noho – the decking linking two hulls of a waka hourua – provides strength and stability in the face of ocean swells and storms, Te Tiriti connects the dual signatories, giving us our place to stand together, survey the horizon and plot our course in our search for

safe harbour,” she said.

“In this way, Te Tiriti acknowledges and respects difference, while encouraging the spirit of kotahitanga advocated by Dame Whina Cooper when she said: ‘The seed I would like to plant in your heart is a vision of Aotearoa where all our people can live together and share the wisdom from each culture’.

“The possibilities are here to broaden and strengthen kotahitanga across Aotearoa.

“The ability to realise those possibilities rests within us all – in our hearts, heads and hands.

“One of my predecessors, Sir Paul Reeves, recalled feeling obliged to ‘shape up and perform for the Treaty’ when he came to Waitangi, and he didn’t shy away from that challenge.

“As he said, we don’t have to be the same, but we should be able to understand each other,” Dame Kiro said.

“As the 22nd Governor-General of Aotearoa-New Zealand and first wahine Māori from Te Tai Tokerau in this role, it is a privilege to join you all today in Te Whare Rūnanga, where we gather to acknowledge the mana of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the

Treaty of Waitangi.

“I salute the memory of Sir Apirana Ngata and his parliamentary colleague Tau Henare, who played such an important role in the construction of this whare for the 1940 centenary of the signing of Te Tiriti.

GARDENING THIS WEEK

LOOKING AFTER CITRUS TREES : By Wally Richards Growing citrus trees for their fruit, glossy foliage and heavenly perfume is a New Zealand tradition.

In years gone by just about every garden had a lemon tree which was a handy source of lemon juice for colds and sore throats. Many gardens would also sport an orange, grapefruit and likely a mandarin.

These were valuable specimens for vitamin C, eating and drinks. Back in those times before manmade chemical sprays and fertilisers came along, the citrus trees would be of high health with little problem from disease and pests. Oh how the world has changed and certainly not for the better when it comes to health of plants and people. I had a email this week from a reader that I would like to share with you: Hi Wally, I’ve been meaning to relate my experience with your Neem granules back to you which may be of interest. I inherited a small citrus patch when I bought my place in Auckland a few years ago. There are about about 15 trees which were small then (but quite a lot bigger now) - and planted closer together than is ideal.

So a perfect scenario for a severe Whitefly outbreak which is what I had about last October. Spraying

with Neem Oil etc was problematic as it’s very difficult to coat the back of every leaf. Anyway, I used about 1/2 kg of Neem granules around the drip line of each tree. I’d say it took about 6 weeks to fully activate but I have since then not had a Whitefly problem at all - if a couple of small Whitefly patches appear even now, they’re gone the next time I check. No signs of borer or other sap suckers this year either.

Most satisfyingly, because I haven’t sprayed, the trees are covered in Ladybugs which can keep on top of the massively reduced levels of pests. Regards David. I have often suggested the use of Neem Tree Granules to use around citrus trees to assist in getting rid of pests in or on the tree. Citrus trees when not pruned correctly become dense and very difficult to spray so pests and diseases can have a field day.

Back in days when New Zealand was a happier place and people were a lot more healthy, we used to care for our citrus trees by feeding them with Blood & Bone, chicken or other animal manures, potash, Epsom salts, urine every so often and the tea pot leaves now and then.

About once or twice a year a spray

of copper would be used to keep diseases from establishing. Now we have the new Wallys Copper Nutrient which works from inside the tree it is a better option to spray.

One reader that has great success using it against curly leaf in stone fruit told me that his fruit are much bigger this season. Once again the Copper Nutrient increases the health and performance of the trees and fruit juicer and much bigger than normal. (Back to our citrus story) We would always plant our citrus where they would be free draining as we knew they would die if they had wet feet. We would never cut the end off a branch as we knew that would only cause the branch to sprout lots of new branches making the tree too dense. Instead we would remove total branches right back to the trunk if and when the need arose. Often the great citrus trees we would see in gardens were grown from pips by a caring gardener.

Years ago during my travels to the Hawkes Bay, as a sales Rep, I would marvel at some of the citrus trees that I came across often reaching heights of 30 feet or more. Now days we tend to have a lot more problems with our citrus trees and

I put a lot of that down to fertilisers such as Citrus Fertiliser and Fruit Tree Fertiliser. Nasty concoctions that harm the soil life, give a quick feed and then nothing till the next application. Feast or famine stuff.

Then there are the chemicals such as herbicides that are used around the trees to control weeds. The manufactures say they don’t harm established trees unless directly sprayed but thats rubbish they get into the soil and do effect the health of both soil and established plants.

Research has shown that Roundup has a soil residual of up to 22 years!

Then if chemical fungicides and insecticides are used you don’t only effect the health of the tree but your own as well not to mention the bees honey bees and bumble bees that will die if they visit your tree.

(This can still happen weeks later when the tree flowers) Most citrus diseases can be easily controlled or prevented with sprays of Wallys Copper Nutrient. If there is a problem spray a couple of times a month apart, or as a prevention, spray twice a year, spring and autumn. Our gardening friend has the answer for insect pests on your citrus trees by using Wallys Neem Tree Granules

which most garden centres and Mitre 10’s stock (Not Wallys Neem Tree Granules to Bunnings or The Warehouse) otherwise can be obtained by mail order. Sprinkling granules is much quicker and easier than spraying. The new strain of whitefly that love citrus trees are a problem easily solved by this method along with scale and mealy bugs and the beauty of it is, no harm to lady birds or bees.

(Its the emerald green ladybird we see on citrus trees) The black Sooty Mould that is formed by the insect pests peeing honey dew over the foliage can be remove with the product Karbyon.

Fire permits needed

Wainuiomata, along with the Hutt Valley, Wellington, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast, moved to a restricted fire season at 8am on 2 February.

T his means that most types of fire will requite a permit from Fire a nd Emergency New Z ea la nd (FENZ).

Fire permits can be obtained online by visiting https://www.firepermit.nz.

“The reason for this change is the current summer weather pattern and predicted climate,” FENZ’s acting Wellington District Manager, Brett Lockyer says.

"If a fire was to get away in these conditions, it will be difficult to control, especially with the wind we have been experiencing.

"If you have a permit, follow the conditions listed on your permit,” Brett says.

“A Restricted Fire Season means a permit is required to light a fire in open air,” FENZ says “You commit an offence if you know-

ingly or recklessly light, or allow another person to light, a fire in open air in an area that is in a Restricted Fire Season unless under a permit issued by Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

“Gas cookers or gas barbeques do not require a fire permit in a Restricted fire season. For cultural fires (hangi, umu) please apply for a permit and discuss with a Rural Fire Officer.”

FENZ also says that any permits issued during a Restricted Fire Season are suspended if Fire and Emergency declares a Prohibited Fire Season, or prohibits fires in open air in the area.

“If you currently have a larger or long duration fire burning, you will need to ensure it is extinguished, or you will need to obtain a permit,” the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade says.

“If you've previously had a large or long duration fire, please check it is fully out - these types of fires can smoulder underground for weeks or months.”

Fire destroys cabin

A cabin at a property in Edmonds Street was destroyed by fire early on 4 February.

Two appliances from the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade and one from Seaview raced to the scene after they were called at 7:58am.

Wainuiomata’s Operational Support Unit also attended.

The cabin and lean to shed were “fully involved when we got there,” Wainuiomta’s Chief Fire Officer Ewen Heron says.

The firefighters were, however, able to stop the fire from spreading “so it was a good save in that respect,” CFO Heron says.

Thank you Funaki Blade has given Wainuiomata people a big “thank you” for helping him raise money for his school trip to Europe.

In just one month people from the valley had helped him raise $2,890 towards the trip, giving him four more days to reach his target of $3,500.

Wainui cricketers victorious

Wainuiomata’s premier Cricket team kicked off the second stanza of the 2023-24 season with a convincing victory over Victoria University on 3 February.

Although this was the first match in the two-day division two competition, it ended up being played as a 50 over game after day one was washed out on 27 January.

Batting first on their home ground of Kelburn Park Victoria University was all out for 193.

Wainuiomata then overtook their opponent’s total for the loss of just five wickets.

Ryan Jackson and Liam Mcgee were outstanding for Wainuiomata with both the bat and the ball.

Ryan took three wickets at a cost of just 39 runs and then scored 43 with the bat.

Liam also took three wickets

while conceding just 36 runs. He then contributed 38 runs while batting, achieved from just 32 deliveries.

Brett Dransfield also bowled well for Wainuiomata, taking two wickets at a cost of 33 runs, while captain Callum Mackaness and Jason Logan took one wicket each.

Daniel Hewtt was another of the Wainuiomata batsmen to shine, finishing the day on 38 not out from only 17 balls that he faced.

Yesh Prashanth was also at the crease when Wainuiomata scored the winning runs and finished on 29 not out.

Wainuiomata’s second XI also took the honours in their match against Upper Hutt Piwakawaka on 3 February.

The result was declared using the Duckworth Lewis System after weather ended the match early.

Wainuiomata, playing on their

home ground of Bryan Heath Park, bowled Upper Hutt out for 188 in 44 overs.

The home team then reached 124 for the loss of just two wickets when rain brought an end to play after 22 overs and three balls.

Three Wainuiomata bowlers took three wickets each.

Captain Scott Babot conceded just 38 runs in taking his three scalps, while both Jordan Nevalagi and Neelay Mistry each conceded 34 runs while taking three wickets.

Alex Newton batted outstandingly for Wainuiomata, scoring 35 runs.

Both Filiva'a Tafuna'i and Nathan Samson were unbeaten with the bat, Filiva’s finishing on 18 not out and Nathan on 6 not out.

With their latest victory, Wainuiomata remain in second place on Cricket Wellington’s sixth division table.

Football registrations open

Registrations are now open for the 2024 Football season.

People wanting to play for the Wainuiomata Football Club can register by visiting https://www. sporty.co.nz/viewform/279969.

The season kicks off on 26 March 2024 for the men’s tier 1 competition and on 2 April for the reserves and masters. All other senior men's teams start on 9 April.

The women will kick off their 2024 season on 9 April.

The junior teams will start on 4 May and their last game will be on the weekend of 31 August.

The Wainuiomata Football Club is hoping to have enough interest in entering a few girls only teams this year. The girls teams play on Sundays. Girls can also play in mixed football on a Saturday.

Parents who have two children playing football this season will be given a discount of $20 and for those with three children there is a $30 discount.

Parents who have children want-

Capital Enduro comes to Wainui

The Capital Enduro mountain bike race will be held at Waiu Park in the hills above Wainuiomata on 10 and 11 February.

There will be three races catering to all ages and abilities in what is a world class mountain biking event.

The “easy” race will start at 10am on 10 February, with an expected finish time of 2:30pm.

The junior race will start at 10:30am on 10 February with an expected finish time of 1pm.

The “hard” race will start at 10am on 11 February, with an expected finish time of 3:30pm.

There are four stages to the race, and riders can re-run stages as many times as time allows.

Two prizegivings are scheduled, the first at 3:30pm on 10 February and the second at 4:30pm on 11 February.

Ulalei Sport kicks off 2024 Ulalei Wainuiomata Sport’s teams return to action on 3 February with its mixed touch football team playing in the third Rhino Touch Tournament at William Jones Park.

The team is coached by former Manu Samoa player Earl Va’a and features multi-sport representative players Billie Va’a, Keira Su’a-Smith and Te Arani Vulu.

The club is excited about the tournament with manager Vatau Sagaga saying: “We know the quality of the teams that this competition attracts so our team has its work cut out.

“It’s also important that we support Rhino Touch club with all the fantastic mahi they do around Wainuiomata led by Nui (Ririnui).”

Next week Ulalei’s six tag football teams return to action in a revamped competition at Wise Park.

Finally, the club’s highly successful primary school football competition restarts on 19 February 2024 with a much larger field of teams entered.
