New car parks

The owner of Khandallah New World is proposing a major extension of the supermarket’s car park.

It has applied to Wellington City Council for a resource consent to demolish three houses and construct the car park extension.

The council has advertised the application, which is now open for public submissions. The closing date for submissions is 11:59pm on 16 January 2024.

The resource consent application can be viewed on the council’s website (under “Have your say”, “Public notices” and “Other public notices”) as well as at the Khandallah Library, the Ngaio Library, the Johnsonville Library and the City Service Centre.

New World’s current car park in Ganges Road has space for 38 vehicles.

The supermarket plans to remove four of these parks to provide an internal accessway and to create 67 new parking spaces.

This will result in a total of 101 supermarket car parks.

The car park application is likely to attract submissions opposing the plan from nearby residents.

A petition opposing the car park plan was organised a few months ago by Janet and John Preston, who live next door to the proposed car park extension.

The petition attracted 51 signatures and the Prestons delivered it to Wellington City Council via the Wharangi/Onslow-Western Ward Councillor Ray Chung.

Those who signed were all “local people who all agreed on the harmful effect of the proposal,” Janet told the “Independent Herald”.

People are “very, very upset”

about the proposed car park, she said.

“It’s a serious health and safety issue for parents who want their children to walk independently to St Benedict’s School.”

There is a footpath on only one side of Nicholson Road, and it is on the same side of the road as one of the proposed accessways to the proposed new section of the New World car park.

There was also an issue with the Nicholson Road car park access being close to a blind corner on the road.

“It’s a dangerous road now, especially on this corner. If the car park goes ahead Nicholson Road will become a nightmare.”

In addition to four issues Wellington City Council has identified, local residents had three concerns about the proposal, John said.

One was the safety of children going to and from St Benedicts School.

A second was increased access near the blind corner on Nicholson Road. “It’s a potential crash site,” John said.

The third was increased traffic on the Nicholson Road-Clutha Avenue-Dekka Street intersection, which was already a very difficult intersection to navigate.

Christmas market a roaring success More than 45 stalls, live entertainment and Santa plus good weather combined to make the first Christmas market at the Johnsonville Shopping Centre a roaring success, Johnsonville Rotary, the event organisers, say.

Crowds of people enjoyed shopping at the wide range of stalls – everything from dog treats to mummified fairies and including original clothing, crafts and jewellery, plants, preserves and cakes were on sale, as well as face painting and nativity photos by the Salvation Army.

Among many community groups, St Johns demonstrated CPR; Mary Potter Hospice sold raffle tickets and calendars and Interact (Rotary for high school students) held a bake sale.

Local MP Greg O’Connor opened the market, Mayor Tory Whanau shopped and Councillors John Apanowicz, (one of the Johnsonville Rotary Club organisers), Tony Randle, Ben McNulty and Ray Chung all enjoyed meeting stall holders.

The teddies can then be picked up from the library on 13 December.

Teddies will be particularly welcome at the library’s Festive Christmas Storytime, which

will run from 10:30am to 11am on 12 December.

The storytime will feature fun and interactive stories, songs and rhymes with a festive theme.

Storytimes aim to inspire preschoolers and grow a love

of literacy.

Through stories and play, children learn how to express themselves and understand the world around them.

The 12 December storytime is recommended for children aged 2 to 4 years with their caregivers.

The Newlands Community Centre is holding a community lunch starting at noon on Tuesday 19 December.

The lunch is for anyone involved in the centre in any way, as a visitor, participant in a group, volunteer, or a local living nearby.

The lunch is free although donations of ingredients (like chicken, ham or kumara) would be welcome.

Family history at Tuatara from Zealandia J’ville Library move to zoo Ensure your build project is set to go!

Two captive tuatara, who have called Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne home for the past decade, have found a new home at Wellington Zoo. Staff from Zealandia and Wellington Zoo, and representatives of Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Ngāti Koata, came together on 29 November to move the sibling pair, Tāne and Tuahine.

While at Zealandia, Tāne and Tuahine have been advocates for tuatara, allowing hundreds of people to connect with their rare and endangered species which are only found in the wild on offshore islands or sanctuaries.

Thanks to the generosity of Ngāti Koata who originally gifted Zealandia tuatara, the wild population of tuatara in the ecosanctuary is now in the hundreds.

Christmas Live coming to Ngaio “Part pageant, part vaudeville, part burlesque, part pilgrimage and part serious proclamation of God’s love” is how one of Ngaio Union Church’s people described the church’s annual Nativity Walk, ‘Christmas Live!’.

“And he wasn’t far wrong,” says Ngaio Union Church’s Minister Sue Brown.

This year, ‘Christmas Live!’ takes to the streets of Ngaio for the fourth

time, on Sunday 10 December.

“It’s huge fun,” says Sue. “There’ll be something for everyone – angels, shepherds, wise ones, a wee horse, a sheep and even a real baby, if we’re lucky.”

It will be a time to enjoy some peace, to share the Christmas story together, and to take a deep breath before diving back into final holiday preparations.

“Everyone’s very welcome,” says

Sue. “This is a time for all the family.”

People can join the adventure at 4.30pm on 10 December, starting in the Ngaio Town Hall car park.

The story continues through Cummings Park, finishing at Ngaio Union for Christmas treats.

And it goes ahead whatever the weather, with the action moving inside Ngaio Union Church if it rains.

REBUS hears about Nuremberg The REBUS Club of Khandallah held its final meeting for 2023, when Navina Clemerson, from Khandallah, talked about her book “There was a Garden in Nuremberg.”

Her book is a fictional work, based on the story of her family and Nuremberg before World War 2.

Historical photos of Nuremberg were shown, as well as photos of Navina’s family taken before the war.

Her book mentions the complete destruction of the Nuremberg Synagogue, and the effects of the Nazi regime on the Jewish community.

In 2001 Navina was able to visit the family home which was much changed, with the garden no longer existing. Her mother had always told the family how beautiful the garden was.

Navina met a stranger who remembered the home before the war and who mentioned what a wonderful garden had originally surrounded the home. Hence the title for Navina’s book.

Many REBUS members have read and enjoyed the book, which can be purchased from Unity Books.

REBUS is a social club for seniors and meets on the last Friday of the month.

The Club has more than 100 members, most of whom will be attending the Christmas function at The Pines, on 13 December.

The first meeting for 2024 will be held on Friday, 26 January at 10 am, at the Khandallah Bowling Club, Woodmancote Road.

The guest speaker will be Grant Crowley, former Board member of the NZ Parole Board. Visitors are welcome.

Police help deliver retail crime prevention training Police, First Retail Group and local business group were up early on 30 November to deliver some sage advice to retailers on how to stay safe at work by navigating risky customers.

Constable Kalim (KJ) Tanuvasa-Kelemete, Porirua Community Officer who presents the training, spoke to a crowd of about 40 retail staff.

“Police advice is all about de-escalation and managing conflict in a safe way,” Constable KJ says. “This is not a new training package. Sergeant Hamish Knight initiated the training some time ago and he and other police members have been presenting this for some time.

“We’re educating retail workers to respond to aggressive clientele behaviour in a certain way to reduce confrontation.

“I teach tactical communication – words and actions do make a difference.

“I teach tactics on how to deal with difficult people. We teach them (the retail staff) how to de-escalate challenging situations and prevent harm in customer facing environments.

“It’s about mitigating risk, we cover tone and content of conversations, body language and personal space,” he says.

Constable Tanuvasa-Kelemete is no stranger to risky retail situations.

Before joining the Police he was a banker and recalled a scary time at a bank in Porirua when he worked as a teller.

“We were being robbed and although no one got hurt, the situation was frightening and I learned quite a lot from that.

“I use that event to reiterate the right way to do things.

“Part of our education is awareness on how to manage intimidating behaviour, unusual people or suspicious cars, things like that - and what to do about it,” he says.

“It’s great to bring this education and awareness to Tawa,” Bernadette Pallister of the Tawa Business Group says.

“This is an exciting opportunity for business owners and staff to find out about safety.

“It’s good to know how to deal with difficult people. Staying calm and professional gets you a long way.

“We did the presentation in Johnsonville at the Community Hub last week and it was successful. KJ (Police),makes the presentation engaging and entertaining.”

First Retail Group Ltd Managing Director Chris Wilkinson, who delivers the EyesOn

programme in Wellington, says: “We’re working closely with Police to educate retail, hospitality and service sector staff to recognise unusual signs or behaviour, both inside and outside of their premises.

“It’s about welfare, safety and about crime prevention. Wellington has preparedness and resilience as part of its DNA and this programme is about supporting that focus.

“It’s working,” Chris says.

“We’ve had some great feedback on these events, but in particular New Zealand Police’s delivery of these amazing sessions.

“Here’s some feedback one local retailer shared following a recent training session: ‘Our two team members found the EyesOn training very helpful. They are on the younger side of things and both said it made them feel more confident and empowered to deal with the more frequent antisocial behaviour and difficult individuals they are faced with these days’.”

The Tawa event was one of four sessions before Christmas. Two have been delivered in Wellington CBD and one recently in Johnsonville.

To date more than 1,300 people have attended these courses presented by the Police.

Attending the events have been a mixture of consumer facing sectors – not just retailers, but workers in the educational and government sectors also.

“This has been really useful for building our commercial communities too,” Chris says.

“It’s a key tool to tie businesses together to look after each other.

“The challenges that people are facing around crime, welfare and antisocial behaviour are shared and the programme has many different ways of supporting the success of communities.”

“This training is around encouraging those front-line organisations to be the eyes and ears of our community,” Constable KJ says.

“They will sense what is wrong and now they may know more about what to do in those situations.

“We want people to stay calm, actively listen and, if possible, call Police. If it’s happening and it’s an emergency - call us on 111.

Advent is here Johnsonville Uniting Church invites everyone in the community to come on the journey of expectation over the next three Sundays of Advent and Christmas morning.

The Christmas tree is up, the wreaths are on the wall, the lights are twinkling and the first candle on the Advent wreath has been lit.

The Tree of Hope, represented by a Pohutukawa tree that is full of the church’s messages of hope for the season, is centre stage at the church for people to come and include their thoughts of hope.

Next Sunday, 10 December will be run by the Sunday School Tamariki team, and will be an interactive service that will involve everyone and the candle of peace will be lit.

The Sunday of joy, 17 December, will be a time of celebrating joy in our lives. On this morning the church will light the candle of joy.

On Christmas Eve the church will light the candle of love and on Christmas day the church will light the Christ candle, recognising the birth of Jesus.

All the services are at 10am and the church will be singing the traditional carols as well as ones especially written for New Zealand.

Karori artist Tim Christie, along with artist Glen Jorna, has just run a very successful exhibition at Te Auaha Gallery in Dixon Street.

Called Chromaphonics, the exhibition ran from 28 November to 4 December.

The exhibition celebrated the merging and mashing of two distinctly different art practices colliding in a colourful collaboration of pop street art.

In addition to the artistic alchemy, Tim and Glen also exhibited some of their own individual works.

Tim is a multi-disciplinary digital artist known for his striking geometrical designs and optical trickery.

Glen is a celebrated mixed-media artist who assembles old street posters, layering the media together with paint and other materials to create beautifully rugged compositions honouring urban life.

J’ville bowlers scoop the pool Johnsonville bowlers won not just one but both the Wellington Open Singles titles when the final round was played on 4 December.

Veteran Paula Meredith and the relatively inexperienced Craig Walker emerged as the champions at the Wellington Aerial Master Open Singles, played at the Johnsonville Bowling Club.

Paula faced the highly experienced Birdie Love in the Women’s final. Although Birdie was competitive throughout, Paula’s consistency saw her take the game 21-9.

Craig’s game against the 19-year-old talented up and comer, Jordan Keene, was up there with some of the best spectators are likely to see.

These two less well-known players produced some exceptional draw bowls.

Although Jordan was in the lead for most of the game, the two were always in touch.

With the score at 20-16 against him, Craig produced a run of five single shots to take the game 21-20, with a finishing flourish of two touchers in the ditch.

After two day’s play JBC started day three of the Open Singles on 4 December with three women and seven men with a chance of glory.

Six triples competed in the club’s Women’s Championship Triples on 26 November.

Teams skipped by Dale Rayner and Karen Guilford faced off in the final, each having won three games in the preliminary rounds.

The final proved to be a very tight game.

Dale, Kay Martin and Ali Colgate met stiff opposition from Kaaren, Cynthia Evans and Lynnie Campbell.

With the score at 13 all after 17 ends and Dale holding shot, Kaaren wasn’t quite able to dislodge the shot bowl – Dale’s team taking it 14-13.

Karori player the national MVP

Waterside Karori footballer Kaley Ward is the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player for 2023.

Kaley also came close to snaring another award, the Golden Boot Award for the most goals scored.

She scored eight goals during the national competition, just one goal fewer than the winner, to finish in second equal.

Primarily a striker, Kaley has been playing for Waterside Karori for four years.

As well as playing, she also coaches the club’s junior players through the Swifts Talent Centre.

This is the second year in a row a Water-

side Karori player has won the National League’s Most Valued Player award.

Renee Bacon won last year’s award playing for the Capital Football team.

That came before this year’s switch away from regional teams to club teams in the National League.

Kaley has been a key member of this year’s highly successful Waterside Karori women’s premier team.

They won both the Kelly Cup and the Central League competition.

With that victory they were promoed to the Women’s National League where the team placed fifth, playing consistently well in a competition featuring New Zealand’s top teams.

Onslow loses table top clash

Onslow Cricket’s first XI did not fare so well in their top of the table clash with Petone Riverside on 2 December.

Petone batted first and Onslow bowled the team out for 173 in their Hazlett Trophy match at Nairnville Park.

The home team was unable to match Petone’s score, however, and was all out for 130.

Captain Sean O’Connor top scored for Onslow with 32 runs while Logan Malthus scored 28.

Henry McIntyre was the best of the Onslow bowlers taking three wickets while Dave Hancock and Matthew Scoble took two wickets each.

Karori’s first XI also lost to Hutt District in the first division Ewen Chatfield Trophy match at the Hutt Recreation Ground on 2 December.

Batting first Karori looked to amass a competitive total when they scored 273 for the loss of five wickets.

Hutt overtook them in the 47th over, losing two more wickets than Karori when they finished on 274 for the loss of seven wickets.

Liam Roche with 64 not out, Shivang Chaudhary who scored 55, Michael Sneddon with 53 not out and Vashraj Kalsi who scored 40 all batted well for Karori.

Max Sargentina took three wickets at a cost of 40 runs and Captain Kevin Weerasundara with two wickets for 31 runs both proved useful with the ball.

Johnsonville also lost its Ewen Chatfield Trophy match with Eastern Suburbs, played at Kilbirnie Park.

Johnsonville batted first and scored 246 for the loss of nine wickets.

Eastern Suburbs overtook the Johnsonville total for the loss of just three wickets.

Jamie Oakley was outstanding with the bat for the visitors, scoring 89 from just 84 deliveries, while Captain Devan Vishvaka made a useful contribution of 40 runs.

Ravindra Tilakaratne took two of the wickets to fall and Alex Chafe took the other.

Altrusa Ohariu has set up a Chrismas tree where people can leave books that will be given to needy children.

The books will be distributed to the Women’s Refuge houses in the Wellington area so that children in the homes will have at least one Christmas present.

Altrusa Ohariu has set up this Christmas Tree with a difference at the Children’s Bookshop in Shop 26, Kilbirnie Plaza.

This project has been run by Altrusa for more than 12 years, and this year Altrusa Ohariu has taken on organising it.

Members of the public are asked to buy a book to put under the tree in time for Christmas.

The tree has decorations made

by Brownies and school children which have a gender and an age on them. People are asked to buy a book for that child. Both the giver and recipient remain anonymous.

Altrusa Ohariu member Patricia O’Donnell collects the books that have been placed under the tree and delivers them to the Women’s Refuge office whose staff distribute them to the houses.

Altrusa Ohariu says thank you to the owner Susan Hooper and her staff at the Children’s Bookshop in Kilbirnie for hosting the tree and helping to wrap and label the books.
