More than 5,000 people attend the hugely successful Christmas in the Nui celebration on 2 December.

The biggest Christmas event Wainuiomata has ever held, Christmas in the Nui “was an absolutely fantastic day,” says one of the event organisers Linda Olsen of the Wainuiomata Marae.

The Christmas celebration was organised by both the Wainuiomata Marae and Kōkiri Marae with support from Love Wainuiomata.

“It was a beautiful Christmas celebration with all the entertainment and the opportunity to buy from stallholders,” Linda says.

“People displayed their beautiful wares and food. It was wonder, wonderful.”

The weather also smiled on Christmas in the Nui, unlike the next day which was wet.

“Another thing I loved about Saturday it brought out all the cultures. It was wonderful to see,” Linda says.

“It was a great day,” says Christmas in the Nui organiser Renee Davies of Kōkiri Marae, “and I’m looking forwrd to the next one.

“There was a great turn out from the community and it provided a great day for everybody of all ages.”

“Love Wainuiomata enjoyed playing a supporting role in this event,” its Co-ordinator Anaru Ryall says.

“It was a pleasure to see the community take the lead on such a successful event.

“The community had a vision to provide an opportunity for kids and families to enjoy themselves,” he says.

It was a fantastic day,” says Sarah Nuku of Harcourts Wainuiomata, one of the major

sponsors of Christmas in the Nui. “It was a really awesome family oriented day.

“The organisers did a really great job,” Sarah says.

As well as being the major sponsor of Christmas in the Nui, Harcourts also ran a free sausage sizzle and gave away 1,000 sausages.

In addition to the entertainment, the stalls and the food Santa also attended, with Santa’s Grotto being stationed in the Wainuiomata Community Hub. There were also a series of stalls displaying community services.

One of the displays was presented by Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade.

They demonstrated the action people should take when faced with a fire in a kitchen.

That included how to put out an oil fire on the stove and also what not to do, and that is put water on the fire.

The demonstration graphically highlighted the massive and very rapid big spread of flames when water is put on an oil fire.

The entertainment stage was very popular.

The last performance was by Under the Sun who headlined the entertainment.

and highly popular reggae band Tomorrow People.

The other performers at Christmas in the Nui were Te whakapakari hapori mo nga Pakeke (Paepae Arahi), Ngā Tamariki ā Upoko-Ā-Urunga te Kōhanga Reo, Pukeatua School Kapa Haka, Tihei Rangatahi, David Smith and Poropiti Rangaawa, Acting Out NZ, Uaua and Bubu, the Samoan Revival Church of the Nazarene Youth Group, Arohanui Strings and Whanau Ora Dancefit.

Along with Harcourts, the

other major sponsors of the event were the Wainuiomata Marae, Kōkiri Marae Keriana Olsen Trust, Hutt City Council, The Professionals, Tihei Rangatahi and Love Wainuiomata.

Prizes were donated by Countdown Wainuiomata, Pak ‘N Save Petone, Dominos Wainuiomata, McDonald’s Wainuiomata, Diyas Delight Wainuiomata, Dawnbake Bakery, Free Ride NZ, Fire and Emergency NZ, Petone Mitre10 mega, Z Seaview and 2 Degrees Mobile.

Wainui firefighters honoured

By Frank Neill The stellar service provided by firefighters was commemorated by the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade at its awards ceremony on 25 November.

Two brigade members, Gary James and Andrew Thomson, were made Honorary Members of the brigade for their commendable effort and dedication to the brigade.

Gary has served the brigade for 17 years and Andrew has served the brigade for 13 years.

T h e y we r e a m o n g t h r e e members who have depa r ted the brigade and who were recognised at the awards evening.

Paul McKinley was also recognised for his nine years’ service.

Twenty firefighters were presented with service honours.

Two brigade members were presented with a two year gold bar – Wainuiomata’s Chief Fire Officer Ewen Heron for 49 years’ service, and Deputy Chief Fire Officer Peter Thomson for 37 years’ service.

New local radio station launched

By Frank Neill Wainuiomata has its own new radio station – Omata FM 87.5.

The new station was launched on 2 December at Christmas in the Nui and is based in the Wainuiomata Community Hub. The new station broadcasts online, rather than over the air, and can be accessed at omatafm.kokiri. org.nz.

“We are all about community,” Bennett Pomana, one of the team that runs Omata FM told the “Wainuiomata News”.

“We are community-based, we are community driven and we play local music.”

The new station, Bennett says, is 100% kaupapa driven.

“Youth from Wainuiomata get

a chance to record their music so everyone can hear it.

“It’s another avenue for our kids to get their songs out there.”

People who tune in will also get to hear about what is happening in Wainuiomata.

“We have a section called ‘Who are the people in your neighbourhood’. It is highlighting people who are doing good stuff in the community – people who are doing stuff to uplift the community.”

The new station also has the capability to have DJs come in and do live events and it can also stream live video.

Omata FM gives “a huge shout out to Kōkiri Marae, Tihei Rangatahi and to Wayne Makaria our IT guy,” Bennett says. “A huge thank you for all your support.”

Cricketers score major upset

The Wainuiomata Cricket Club’s first XI scored a major upset when they defeated the table topping North City at Bryan Heath Park on 2 December.

Batting first, Wainuiomata was all out for 124. Craig Foster notched up a half century, finishing on 51 while Ben Coddington scored 25.

That did not look like a big enough score to threaten North City. The Wainuiomata bowlers had different ideas, however, particularly Ryan Jackson, who also plays in the Wellington A team.

Ryan bowled outstandingly, taking six wickets for 39 runs.

This was the first time Ryan had chalked up a five wicket bag when bowling for Wainuiomata.

The team’s captain Callum Macaness also bowled outstandingly, taking two wickets at a cost of just 19 runs, as did Liam McGee who finished with figures of two wickets for 21 runs.

This saw Wainuiomata bundle North City out for 116 runs, giving the home team an eight run victory.

Wainuiomata’s second XI also had a good day at Bryan Heath Park, defeating Upper Hutt United Indian Stiflers by 63 runs.

With the victory the team retained its spot at the top of the Wellingting division 6 table.

Batting first Wainuiomata scored 225 for the loss of six wickets.

Tanuj Ahuja notched up his century during Wainuiomata’s innings and finished with a score of 57.

Wainuiomata then bowled out the Indian Stiflers for 162 runs.

Tanuj featured with the ball as well as the bat, taking two wickets for 26 runs.

Captain Scott Babot was outstanding with the ball, taking two wickets at a cost of just 17 runs.

Two other Wainuiomata bowlers also took two wickets, with Chris Ingram finishing with two wickets for 28 runs and Chai Hughes with two wickets for 50 runs.

Wainui cable car proposed Local MP Leader of House

A cable car for Wainuiomata has been proposed by Australian company Doppelmayr.

The company launched its case for new urban cable cars in New Zealand at an event hosted by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce on 29 November.

A cable car from Wainuiomata to the Hutt town centre via Waterloo Station was one of 10 proposals Doppelmayr put forward.

Four of these were in Wellington.

As well as the Wainuiomata cable car the company is promoting a cable car from Island Bay to Wellington Railway Station, one from the airport to the railway station another from Karori to the Wellington CBD. A Wainuiomata cable car is “worth looking at,” says Greater Wellington Regional Councillor Quentin Duthie.

“I'm not advocating it, but as one of the options to make it quicker and easier and more reliable to move lots of people over the hill and ease pressure on the Wainuiomata Hill Road, it's worth looking at,” Cr Duthie, one of the Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai-Lower Hutt Councillors says.

“It may be one of the cheaper options, given how expensive it is to tunnel or build a new road on steep hills.

“Running on electricity, it would be clean

and cheap to run so ticket prices could be very competitive with the cost of maintaining and driving a car over the hill.

“On the other hand, not everyone would like how it looks, someone would have to pay for it, and it can only go to one destination.

“In the meantime, I'm talking to Metlink about ways to optimise Wainuiomata buses, both tweaks in the short-term and some bigger changes for the community to consider when we review the Regional Public Transport Plan next year.

“A key priority for me is a bus service from Wainuiomata to Seaview and Petone, and either to Petone Station or all way into Wellington.

“This would benefit commuters that work in these locations, and residents who like to visit shops and go to the beach,” Cr Duthie says.

Love Wainuiomata posted a news item about the Doppelmayr proposal on its Facebook page, which quite rapidy attracted more than 100 replies.

While some were in favour of the idea, many others said that a second access to Wainuiomata was a more important priority.

One post, for example, said: “Do another entrance first I reckon or fix the old tunnel up before putting our country in more debt and adding these gondolas.”

Hutt South MP Chris Bishop is Leader of the House with the new coalition Government formed by National, ACT and NZ First.

The new Government was announced on 24 November.

Chris has four Ministerial portfolios in the new Government.

He is the Minister of Housing, Minister of Infrastructure, Minister Responsible for RMA Reform and Minister for Sport and Recreation.

He is also the Associate Minister of Finance.

Chris is third on the National Party list, behind Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Nicola Willis.

Chris was sworn into his Ministerial roles on Monday 27 November.

Of the 20 new Ministers, 14 are from the National Party while three each are from ACT and NZ First.

Hutt Council creates Maori Ward Hutt City Councillors voted to create a Māori Ward for the 2025 local government elections on 21 November.

The intent of Māori Wards is to ensure Māori are represented and can participate in local government decision-making.

Electors enrolled on the Māori electoral roll will vote for candidates standing for the Māori Ward.

A Māori Ward councillor would have a particular responsibility to represent people of Māori descent alongside Mana Whenua and also to act in the best interests of the city as a whole.

The decision received full support from Hutt City Council’s Mana Whenua partners: Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika (Port Nicholson Block Settlement) Trust, Te RŪnanga

o Toa Rangatira, Wellington Tenths Trust, Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trust and Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa ki te Upoko o Te Ika a Māui.

The decision to establish a Māori Ward represented council’s ongoing commitment to bring Māori voices into the heart of our decision-making in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai, Lower Hutt, Mayor Campbell Barry said “Over recent years we have been focused on deepening our relationship with our Mana Whenua partners and Māori across our city.

The Chair of Te Runanganui o Te Ati Awa ki te Upoko o te Ika a Māui, Kura Moeahu, said the decision has been a long time coming.

“146 years and the beauty of it is that councils come and go, but Mana Whenua will always be here irrespective of the changes of council and so it’s important for us to not only act in the best interests of Mana Whenua, but the best interests of everyone.”

Taranaki Whānui Trustee, Matiu Jennings said he was heartened with the vote.

“There have been many times Mana Whenua have had to be pragmatic and have made many concessions because they were not

at the council table.

“Today, I’m really really, happy. I look forward to the evolution of this conversation.

“We all hold the same responsibilities to secure the future for our people in this takiwā (region).”

“Ngāti Toa supports the establishment of Māori Wards as a step in the right direction to strengthen the voice of Māori in the governance of our community,” Ngāti Toa Tumu Whakarae/Chief Executive, Helmut Modlik said.

“That said, we are also very clear that such wards do not represent, nor should they replace the Tiriti partnership between Mana Whenua and Kawanatanga at the local level.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled”, the Chair of the Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trust, Liz Mellish said.

“Because of the work that was done to change the legislation and enable it to happen. It’s not about besting anyone, it’s a positive thing.

“I go back to the deal that rangatira Te Whare Pouri and Honiana Te Puni made in 1839 on Pito-one beach.

“On his death bed, Te Wharepouri said: ‘After I have gone, be good to my Māori people and my European people. Let the thunder of your voice reach me in the spirit land.”

The vote to establish a Māori Ward is part of Hutt City Council’s Representation Review, which will ensure communities in Lower Hutt are fairly and effectively represented at council.

This work is being led by an Independent Panel chaired by Paul Swain.

By Frank Neill Hutt-based MP Ginny Andersen was promoted eight places when the Labour opposition announced its reshuffled ranks on 30 November.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has named Ms Andersen spokes-

person for Police and also for family and sexual violence prevention.

She came in as a list MP in 2017, won Hutt South in 2020, and lost the seat to National's Chris Bishop in this year’s election.
