Sophie moved from Middlesbrough in the United Kingdom.

She has been living in Wainuiomata for eight years.

She has followed her passion for art her whole life, she says, getting many qualifications in Fine Arts.

But during the day, you will usually find her working at Parkway Kindergarten.

Positivity has become a huge focal point for Sophie who says her art used to be quite dark and abstract.

“Usually my work is a lot more abstract and doesn’t include figures,” she says.

“I wanted to salvage some positivity out there. People are amazing and doing amazing things.

“Recovery is very much the vibe of this work.”

Sophie likes to use imagery in her work along with abstract shapes, textures, materials and vibrancy.

“The female has her eyes closed because she is taking a step back.

She’s zoning in.

Her favourite material to work with is paint, especially the way it can often have a mind of it own.

“I love to use paint and I like it to look like paint. I like it to do what it’s supposed to do and not have it look like a photograph.”

Sophie has exhibited all around the United Kingdom and in Wellington.

“Wellington is the place to do art. People love it here.”

Famous dog in Wainuiomata and loved by many, Trish Le Cren’s Robin has passed away.

Living to the ripe age of 13 the Griffon Bruxellois dog was often seen sitting outside Countdown on The Strand while 88-year-old old Trish was inside doing her groceries.

“Everyone loved Robin,” she says.

“Children would always come running up to him and pat him.

“There was a group of young intermediate school children who would always be excited to see him. They would run up to him every time.

“When Robin passed I

wanted to be able to tell them he was gone,” she says.

Robin used to run alongside Trish’s mobility scooter. She trained him to be a very well mannered and kind dog.

“He had such a loving personality.

“He should have passed two years ago but he didn’t want to leave.”

Trish had one other dog called Ruby who passed away some time earlier.

What she will miss the most, Trish says, is the company of Robin.

“We would talk all the time.”

Trish says it is unlikely that she will get another dog because of her age, but she will miss the presence of an animal in the house.

inbrief news Free pool party Head to the Wainuiomata Swimming Pool this Saturday evening from 5pm for a free pool party by the Community Champions.

It is an opportunity for our community to connect and promote the Wainuiomata community champions Kaupapa that it’s ‘ok to ask for help’.

David’s concern for trees

Davis Grove resident David Smith is concerned by the number of trees that are being cut down in order to build new houses on properties.

On a developing lot on his street, opposite his house, several trees were cut down and removed, David says.

“They can’t keep cutting down trees.

“It’s not okay if everyone is doing it,” he says.

His street is very close to the natural Wainuiomata bush and is home to many native birds and wildlife which sometimes explore the street.

“You see a lot of tui and wood pigeons come along here.

It’s not just that, it provides shade, protection and increases the air quality.”

David has lived on his property for 30 years and tries to keep his garden as natural as he can, to create “little pockets” of spaces for wildlife.

“People remove trees then they just plant a new forest somewhere else. They should be aware of what they’ve already got.

“It’s no good planting trees when they’re cutting them down too.

“There has to be some thought about the environment which is a big conversation at the moment.

“It is an issue for everyone,” he says.

David hopes that some kind of permit or protection can come from his concerns.

Although people need housing, he adds, it is still important to keep the natural habitat intact and keep it a home for all animals.

“You can do both. You can have houses and trees.”

Bubble bonanza!

It was POPPING off at the Community Hub on Saturday afternoon for a big bubble bonanza.

Bubbles filled the air and floated around until they were

either captured by an excited child or popped on the ground.

It was hard to tell who was more excited, the children or the adults!

As the sun came out, the bubble party was moved outside so the bubbles could be set free. Blake Harris-Swinn gets the better of some bubbles.

Winter is coming Although the weather has been warm lately, and large parts of the country are experiencing drought conditions, autumn and cooler temperatures are not far around the corner. So that means it’s time to start thinking about strengthening our immune systems before colds and flu start making their rounds.

Students fundraise for Japan trip

Get hypnotised next weekend to help raise funds for Wainuiomata High School students to travel to Japan in July.

The fundraiser will bring Nigel Kennedy the ‘hilarious hypnotist’ to the Rugby Club on Moohan Street on March 14, at 7.30pm.

He combines humour and hypnotism all in the name of a good

night out.

All tickets sold from the event will assist the students with travel costs and anything else they need.

Students will be spending one and a half weeks in Japan, learning the customs, culture and meeting new people.

This will be the first time many of the youngsters have travelled to Japan.

What makes their trip unique is

that they will be there during the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Whanau Evening

Wainuiomata Intermediate enjoyed everything the summer sun had to offer last Tuesday evening for their annual Whanau Evening event.

The events are typically run twice a year, at the start and end of the school year, as a way for parents, teachers and students to network and see who else

attends the school.

Tuesday night had no shortage of socialising while teachers manned the barbeque and dished out the sausages.

Youngsters played in the sun, on the playground and at the basketball courts while parents chilled out in the shade.

“It was a pretty decent turnout,” assistant principal Isaac Hayes says.

The next Tyson era?

Tyson Fury could be the man to put boxing back on the map for the masses.

The 31-year-old undefeated world champion seems to understand his role while also remaining relatable.

As a jaded boxing fan, tired of poor judges’ decision, hyperbolic pre-fight press conferences and underwhelming action in the

ring, Fury’s fight with Deontay Wilder, while one-sided, was entertaining.

I’d made a late decision to see it with a boxing-mad buddy and my sports-loving partner at the Christchurch Casino.

It was a big fight day with UFC Auckland happening on the same day but rest assured there was very little drop-off in interest

when the MMA gave way to the sweet science.

The two entrances, Fury’s king-like entrance and Wilder’s terminator themed walk was the perfect start, a very entertaining nod to professional wrestling.

The fight itself, was one-sided as the boxer, Fury, out-worked the puncher in Wilder.

Staggering, right?

Wilder has the power but not the technique and he was ruthlessly exposed.

One thing is for sure, he cannot sing but it’s all part of his charm.

The so-called ‘Gypsy King’ has certainly said some questionable things about the role of women in a 2020 society but his openness around his mental health battles makes him relatable, affable

even.

He is a showman and we all love to be entertained.

There is nothing like a dominant heavyweight boxing champion and there has not been one since Lennox Lewis in the early 2000s.

Fury has the chance to add new life to the division in the next three to five years if he is good enough.

Club champs for tennis club The Wainuiomata Tennis Club is playing Club Championships games through February and March.

For the first time the club has held junior club champs on Sundays which has been very successful as families can come along and watch, president Wendy Paulik says.

Matches at the weekend were Under 14’s and Under 18’s.

“I am very proud to say that the skills of our junior players have improved greatly this season, with excellent sportsmanship on the court. It was wonderful to watch,” Wendy says.

This weekend senior club champions will play.

“If you want to watch some local tennis Tennis club junior members Abby Cuthbertson, Fanua Rimoni, Nikita Mepham, Nyah call into the Wainuiomata Tennis Club on Brouwer, Georja Keall and Zoey Kumar played well at the champs at the weekend.

Ulalei League back in the winner’s circle

Ulalei Sports Club has capped off a successful return to the local summer leagues. They won a hard-fought victory over surprise finalist Wainuiomata Intermediate School in Wainuiomata Rugby Club’s touch rugby competition.

After a mistake-ridden and scoreless first half, the deadlock was finally broken by Simati Leala shortly after halftime. The try also broke some tension and opened the floodgates, Ulalei eventually running out winners 6-1.

The result aside, reaching the final was yet another success story for the impressive sports programme being run at Wainuiomata Intermediate.

The programme has enjoyed consistent success across most sports, most notably its rugby, volleyball, hockey and turbo touch

teams with its greatest achievement being the girls’ sevens rugby team’s win at the prestigious AIMS Games last year.

Ulalei itself fielded five products from the school including Leala and Wellington touch rugby representatives Tyra and Trenell Leota. In making this final the school team, which also included former pupils and staff, showed it was more than comfortable mixing it in the “senior” ranks by overcoming more experienced opposition.

by Wainuiomata’s good weather resulting in no cancellations. It is confirmed the competition will be run again next summer.
